"Just" a House Husband

I wanted to reblog a post I'd made about why Percy would like and deserves to be a stay at home dad. And found out I couldn't. So I'm reposting it for myself and including the original post for context.

Here's my original response:

The tags prove you missed the point. Percy is not "just" a house husband. He is a man who has served his time, changed the world, fought, and protected, and his reward is being able to stay at home with his beautiful children and/or pets and extended family and help them in the way he wants (personally), beholden to nobody.

People who choose to stay home aren't "just" staying at home. They aren't making a decision to be lesser, they are deciding that the most important things in their life (at current) are the people who live in their home. They are dedicating themselves to helping and being with those people whenever and however possible. Personal ambition is meaningless to them if it doesn't allow them to care for the people most in need of their love and protection.

This is something to be praised, not viewed with disdain.

Spoiler alert. I got blocked for this. LOL. I included their "response" below so you can see it if you care to.

For future reference if you think my take is in "bad faith" I'm totally open to talking it out. But yeah. You can also just block me. That's fine too. Do what makes you comfortable. o9

Percy Cooking Headcanons

When Percy first starts high school, and subsequently had more assignments to do, he becomes frustrated with himself because of how difficult he finds some assignments to complete. One afternoon before he's supposed to turn in an assignment, Sally sees that he's both physically and mentally exhausted from the stress he's putting on himself to complete it, so she drags him away from the task and into the kitchen and teaches him how to properly cook a meal.

He starts to cook dinner once a week - sometimes with the aid of Sally, but mostly on his own.

He teaches himself how to cook every meal from every cookbook they own

Sally begins to notice when Percy's the most stressed as he'll cook a simpler dish as sometimes new things stress him out more. Most of the time this dish is the first one she taught him how to cook.

He develops a phase in which he'll make dishes for a different cuisine each week.

He always cooked whenever Annabeth would come over.

The first time he met Paul, he cooked his and Sally's favourite Greek meal.

When Paul becomes a settled member of their family, he teaches Percy his own favourite childhood/comfort meals, and Percy teaches Paul how to make Greek food.

When Paul moved in, he brought his vast record collection. Percy then started to cook while blasting music - his favourite records that Paul owned being Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and Elephant by The White Stripes.

Whenever he had time, Percy would cook while on the Argo II. Sometimes Annabeth would assist, sometimes she'd just sit and watch.

One night after Tartarus, Percy is awoken by a nightmare and goes to cook a batch of blue cookies. Leo, who was also awake, goes to the kitchen and fixes up two mugs of hot chocolate for him and Percy. They sit there, eating cookies and drinking cocoa for hours just talking about their moms and their powers and their fears and anything and everything.

When Percy would babysit Estelle, he'd make cookies and she'd sit and watch and sometimes he'd accidently spill something and Estelle would just laugh and clap her hands.

Annabeth sets up her own architecture firm in New York City, and after they have children, Percy becomes a stay at home Dad and experiments how many vegetables he can hide in his children's food.

When their kids become older, he teaches them how to cook.

Gods I'm thinking about Chris/Clarisse/Silena/Beckendorf polycule so much

Rereading scenes from tlo and why they're much smaller moments, it just feels so much like they were all together-

The way he trails off?? The way Thaila stepped in quickly in a way you see people do to rush things along when someone I obviously upset?

Like, just in general the idea of Clarisse falling in love with two who technically worked for Luke? And who suffered from that? And just- ugh

Chris is also seen with Clarisse comforting Silena after Beckendorf's death. And just the whole time he seems like he's trying to keep it together for all of them.

I know it probably me over-analyzing,but let's be honest that's most of my post hdhdf

Also, just think about Chris having known about Silena, and kept it to himself cause he knew the position she was in.

We see him described as looking "guilty" with Beckendorf's death, and overall just love the idea of Silena and him bounding. Her using her charmspeak to pull him out of panic attacks and him supporting her through dealing with Luke

I know I seen some people tend to use the Achilles and Patroclus parrels with Ruegard as a way to say that Clarisse didn't romantically love Chris by comparing him to Briseis but???

Like- wouldn't that be the other way around then???

Also over all its not a great comparison cause Chris was a guy they rescued unlike Briseis who was a literal trophy wife.

Like she was a prisoner of war, that Achilles literally got upset over being taken away from him. Like the Achilles and Patroclus and Clarisse and Silena thing is fair but like...Briseis was literally forced to be with the greeks. Chris wasn't. He wanted nothing to do with Luke or Kronos anymore.

Literally the chariot thing in the books? That's a comparison between Achilles vs Agamemmon and Clarisse vs Michael in a lot less uncomfortable way

Cause they're fighting over Briseis,a human, like the Ares and Apollo cabin fight over the chariot.

Actually, it's because of Apollo ironically that they ended up there.

The himbo, malewife, goofball -fication of percy jackson is such a crime by both the fans and riordan. It has made Mr not like percabeth as a couple because in all posts and in later books annabeth is such a girlboss, while Percy's dumb and can't fight his way out of a paperbag without her. All the posts are about how annabeth will be an architect and percy would love to be a trophy husband.

Even the humor in the books went from Percy's sharp wit and snark to 'my pancakes can't drown because I'm a son of poseidon.'

And now this recommendation letter bullshit.

Honestly now I'd wish percy just separated from annabeth (but they remain best friends.) He stays home with his family, becomes a camp counselor, helps young demigods, holds God's accountable and eventually becomes a social activist. (I also dislike him doing something marine biology related. It's clear he hates academics but he always wants to help people. Him helping demigods and mortals is such a wholesome profession for him.)

I fully agree with the first half of this, though I slightly disagree with part of the latter.

The later-series and fanon mischaracterization of Percy is at least a solid 50% ableism minimum, full stop. He's being warped into a very stereotyped ADHD character and the exact reason why he's being characterized as "dumb" is because of ableism. Percy is a very intelligent character! That's exactly why he's so in sync with Annabeth and they're such a strong duo! It's just generally Annabeth is more book/academically smart.

I disagree with where you say he hates academics - because that's one of the common misconceptions about his character. Percy doesn't hate learning or academic subjects! He's not even bad at them! We know explicitly that when he is in an accommodating environment he is interested in learning and gets significantly better grades! Percy only dislikes school because it is generally an environment that systematically he struggles with. It's literally just he has a learning disability (two, actually)! That's it! When his learning disability is accommodated for he does well! It's almost like that's what accommodations are all about! We know this from the first series! It's discussed pretty in-depth! Percy isn't a dumb character and he doesn't hate learning, he's just been let down by school systems so much that he's inherently distrustful of them. If they actually accommodate him though then he does just fine!

And that's exactly what CHB was all about and why New Rome University was supposed to be such a big thing for him! CHB is a learning environment geared for demigods. NRU is a demigod college. Both inherently imply an environment meant to cater to and accommodate students with ADHD and dyslexia! They are both systematically structured to be able to accommodate him! Heck, CHB and CJ even both address in the wider themes of the series a metaphor about how ADHD and dyslexia are commonly seen as childhood disabilities, and how it can be more difficult to find accommodations into adulthood because of that attitude but those disabilities don't just go away - that's why CHB is a summer camp but they talk about how demigods outside of CHB don't often fare well. The metaphor there is those who are not getting help or accommodations are struggling. Because that's how that works! This is a fully intentional metaphor from the first series! CHB is never framed as being perfect for demigods, because one of the entire central conflicts of the series is Percy and Luke going back and forth about this flawed system meant to help and support them but still letting people fall through the cracks. The "claim your kids by 13" thing is a metaphor about how acknowledging a child's disabilities (and possibly getting a diagnosis) earlier/as early as possible means they will have more time to learn and build up resources and support for themselves to be able to use later in life. One of CHB's major flaws is that it can accommodate demigods to a certain point, but it can only do so much before those demigods have to leave (the metaphor being accommodating school systems when those disabled students do not have any other forms of accommodations in their lives.)

And that's why Camp Jupiter was framed as being so revolutionary for Percy because it had an environment acknowledging that this is not just a childhood disability, adults with ADHD/dyslexia exist too and still need and deserve accommodations, AND is a place where those accommodations are available. That's why Camp Jupiter and NRU are treated as such special and important things to Percy, because it's essentially Percy being shown this type of thing can and does exist and it is available to him. It is an option he never thought was possible. Percy never thought he'd be able to go to college because he would not be able to go through school without accommodations, but NRU proves otherwise.

The part that's absolutely stupid is Rick then proceeded to retcon NRU so that apparently it's not a full college and Percy still has to take classes at normal mortal college which DEFEATS THE ENTIRE PURPOSE OF NRU EXISTING. Rick has fully retconned that demigods struggle past the ages of 16-18 when they're on their own (see above elaborated metaphors) and in doing so we have fully killed all symbolism in literally all of that. It's so stupid. And by having the plot of the CoTG trilogy entirely be that Percy is not actually allowed access to NRU in the first place because he is a son of Poseidon and has to do extra to even be accepted is stupid!

All that to say, I agree the marine biology feels like a huge cop-out and a disservice to his character by reducing him to just a son of Poseidon. The literal only reason why it's the default option people take for him is because oh, fish thing, fish guy. But I feel like everyone ignores the really obvious answer for what Percy would want to do which is - writing. Both his parents are writers/authors and he clearly admires that about them. Percy likes telling stories! He canonically is already a published author in-universe! That's what the books ARE in-universe! The first series fully exists in their universe and Percy is the author! This is explicit canonical information! Percy canonically has help physically writing it down (accommodations) but he is still the credited author! Percy is a writer! Already! Canonically! Why are we making him a marine biologist he already has a profession that ties into his character significantly more. Like you said, Percy likes helping people. That's what the books in-universe are supposed to be for! It's point blank at the beginning of the series! Book one! The thing everybody quotes all the time! The books exist because it is Percy trying to give advice to other demigods who don't know what's going on yet! It's Percy's writing down his experiences to help new demigods understand and contextualize their experiences so they can understand themselves better and figure out what's going on - WHICH IN ITSELF IS ALSO A METAPHOR ABOUT ADHD/DYSLEXIA! Because the core of the series has and always will be built around ADHD/dyslexia! Percy as a protagonist EXPLICITLY was created so that ADHD/dyslexic kids could see themselves as a hero!

Sorry that all was a very tangential rant but my point being: Absolutely. Percy in newer stuff in the franchise and in fanon is horrifically mischaracterized in ways that are functionally either fully ableist (shoutout TSATS for just outright claiming Percy is intentionally lazy and skips school out of disinterest, which is like the number one ableist attitude towards kids with learning disabilities) or a complete erasure of Percy's disabilities. Also I think he should be a writing major not a marine biologist.

6. I find a connection between Ashlesha and plastic surgery. Ashlesha is the star of restriction and its tightly coiled by nature. These natives often express their severity through their self-presentation. On another note, these tropical Leo natives become sidereal Cancers and while Leos are known for being extremely self conscious and prone to fluctuating self esteem, adding a layer of Cancerian sensitivity makes things worse for them. - He never grows facial hair. Yes this is partially because I don't like drawing facial hair but also I feel like Percy would just take one look at the mirror, realise that he looks like a splitting image of his dad and then shave the whole thing off

- Percy is the malewife trophy husband in this relationship. Yes I HC him with a job (I will get to that later) but it's about the vibes

Something something he does this as a distraction from everything but also because he genuinely wants to have normalcy but after burning out somewhere through the year he is convinced to take a damn break!!!!

- I think the road trip at the end of ToA can still happen but like, just them relaxing and exploring during the GAP year (also redesigning Olympus is Annabeth's BABY man she's putting that over school + she has worse school records than Percy because she's been year round at camp since she was 7 I don't think school convention matters that much to her actually)

- Anyway they take a well deserved break!! (And get therapy hopefully) So by the time they get to college they are in a much better place mentally <3

- With the accomodations from NRU for his learning disabilities Percy actually ends up doing really well and gets better grades than Annabeth! I am a believer of "Percy is smart it's just that he wasn't properly accommodated and also lacked interest in certain subjects" and "Annabeth is naturally gifted and never learnt to study because she coasts through school and wings her tests" (they're both just like me fr)

- Percy ends up picking Marine Biology as a major because he's not actually sure what he wants to study (he's never gotten the chance to think about what he wanted for his future because of the great prophecy) and thinks that "hey even if it's cliche it'll be easier for me"

Cuz like I understand the excitement of finally going to a school that accomodates you and having hope that you'll get an actual chance to succeed. But also school is still hard and Percy probably just wants to get through it too sjsjsjdj. So he doesn't think too hard on it and goes with the perceived most obvious and easiest option. (Also an option he's most likely to show interest in)

Okay! Rubs hands. From here I start talking about my marine rehabilitation center Percy hcs :) (this hc is heavily inspired by this post! I really looked at it a few years ago and never stopped thinking about it lmao)

- Something something Percy is canonically the kid who used to sneak out at night to help free sea creatures in fishing nets and is best friends with Grover "lord of the wild" Underwood and Rachel "activist" Dare. That boy is an environmentalist.

- He ends up finding genuine passion in ocean conservation and gets a degree in environmental conservation along with marine biology

- A while after graduating, he sets up a marine rehabilitation/conservation center of sorts

- Annabeth, who probably makes it big as an architect pretty soon (at least in the half-blood community) designed the building, Rachel helps to fund the whole thing. Grover, who goes around doing conservation work and setting up sanctuaries to help preserve the wild helps a ton with setting up too

- The center helps out both mythical and regular sea creatures. It also acts as a demigod safe house (something something Hazel + the Hecate kids help to set up wards to keep monsters out and also to shroud the mythical aspects of the place with the Mist)

- I dunno if the staff will be only consisting of people in the know or if there are mortals too but I feel like even though the wards at the center aren't as strong as those at the camps, the prospect of a safe working environment would be pretty enticing to demigods so a bunch of them end up interning there for a bit

- speaking of safe environment I feel like while Percabeth study in New Rome they wouldn't live there. Instead Annabeth ends up building something similar to it at CHB. But rather than a whole city, it's more of just apartments close to camp with various safe houses all over the country because I feel like they'd end up vibing in the mortal world more. (Much like this post!)

- The center holds educational field trips to encourage more people to care about the oceans. (I've been on a field trip to a marine rehabilitation center before, I think it'd be something like that but with a bigger, more advanced facility)

- I actually like the hc of Percy becoming an educator to help kids like him and also go full circle with the whole "why would anyone want to be a teacher for all time" thing with Chiron in TLT. But rather than become a teacher he ends up being an educator and advocator for environmental conservation. Might be invited to be a guest speaker at schools from time to time.

- Oh also he's still a teacher in that Percy teaches swordfighting and canoeing at camp send tweet

I got a prompt for you, one day during breakfast, Emmy can't help but ask her papa if he's in the Mafia? (Which makes Percy laugh and choke on his cereals). Why such a question you may ask? Well she's still a kid and had (secretly) watched some mob movies and since her papa's italian, goes on long dangerous missions, sometimes comes back a little worn out, knows very well that he can be serious and scary, sees all the expencive gifts he gives Percy ( yes, Percy the mob husband 😂) and well their overall lifestyle is pretty cushy, without knowing the full details of her papa's job, that's the thing her kid brain comes up with. I got the idea after rewatching that episode 's of the sopranos where the mob chief's daughter asks her dad if he's in the mafia. I thought it was hilarious 🤷‍♂️

The table was completely quiet as Emilia, just 5 years old, looked at her papa, waiting for his response.

The silence was broken by the girl's dad, Percy Jackson, laughing uncontrollably as he dropped the spoon, splattering his shirt with baby food.

Nico di Angelo, seemingly back from whatever haunted mindscape his daughter's question brought, glared briefly at his husband before turning back to his oldest.

"Emmy, where did you hear that word?" He asked as gently as he could.

Emilia frowned. She hated when her parents dodged her questions.

"Papa's from Italy," she said, trying to sound smart and mature. "I looked for movies from there."

"Set in there, Emmy," Percy corrected her. Struggling to breathe between laughs. "Most of those movies are American."

"Principessa," Nico said, bringing her attention back to him. "You know not every Italian belongs to the Mafia, right?"

"But it makes sense for you!" She insisted. "You sometimes leave, and, and, I don't see you for days! You come back beat up!"

Percy had tears coming out of his eyes as laughter bubbled up again.

"Sweetie, you know I monster hunt," he reminded her. It was awkward to actually explain he was sort of a cross between bounty hunter and gofer for gods, so 'Monster Hunter' had to suffice until his daughter was older.

"Because you work for the monster mafia!" There was no doubt in his daughter voice as she said it. "Dad says money doesn't come out of nowhere. The monsters pay you to take out other monsters!"

Nico winced. Emilia was not exactly wrong, but... that line of thinking would not amuse the gods as much as his husband, who was now being patted by a worried Asher, who was babbling at him.

"Yes, Emmy, I get paid to take out monsters, but the ones paying me are... people like your grandfather."

"Family business," she said in an Italian accent so bad Nico knew she was quoting one of those movies. "And you use the money to buy pretty things for dad!"

Percy's laughter died instantly as he looked at himself, probably realizing he was wearing the blue designer sweater Nico had bought him for Christmas last year.

"Emmy, is that what you thing of your dad?" He asked, pouting. "I work too, you know? I'm not a trophy husband."

"Erika worked too," she told him. "But it was Marco that bought her all the pretty and shiny stuff."

And maybe Nico and Percy had been part of this demigod world for far too long, because both turned to look at each other, doubting.

"As your dad said, it's okay," Nico said. "We'll go to Italy soon, okay, and you can learn and ask all you want."

His daughter sniffled and hugged him.

"Now, let's get back to dinner, I think the chicken is getting cold." Asher bablled again. "And your brother was really liking his food too."

He looked at Percy expectantly, who obediently took the baby food and took a new spoonful. He would get back at him eventually for laughing at him.

His family was known for holding grudges, after all.

percy jackson is the epitome of a househusband. he’s an amazing cooker and he cleans often because that’s what his mom taught him. he cooked with his mom often and she made him clean the house every weekend. annabeth chase cannot cook for shit and is organized in her own chaotic way to where no one else can find anything but she can find a singular paper clip in an instant. she ran away with thalia and luke (son of hermes who stole everything they needed) who also ran away at young ages. percy cooks and cleans and is stressed out at annabeth’s messes and she gets so annoyed every time he cleans it. he apologizes by bringing her delicious home cooked meals.
