Arkady: So, the Carmen Gambit is Jeeter’s pretentious name for one of the easiest short-term cons of the modern age. Named for the novella, obviously. Violet: Sorry, what? Arkady: Carmen. It’s about this broke Roma con artist. There’s a scene where she’s about to be arrested for a street brawl, and then she realizes the officer’s from this tiny, remote part of Spain. Carmen plays on his sympathy by pretending she’s from there too. “Oh, I was only punching that dude because he insulted our glorious homeland” blah blah. Part of him knows she’s lying, but he’s so homesick-- That’s the thing, right? All of us living out here in space. Go back one, two generations and most of us are from someplace else. Another planet, another station. Earth. They raise you on stories of a place you’ve maybe never even seen, until it’s just an outgrowth of your imagination. So we fly around and we spread out farther and farther, and in the meantime, in the back of our minds, we’re constantly nostalgic for someone else’s memories. Violet: That’s beautiful. It was one of those rare times Arkady felt a little optimistic - the nanobots were dealt with, the Rumor was back on its regular routes and there was no sign of the next threat.

Then the goose showed up.

It was a rare moment of quiet on the ship, only the hum of the regulators and Arkady’s own movement to be heard. She savored it. It’d been a while since she was up this late alone. She did the usual maintenance on all her tools and weapons and then walked a loop through the common areas, avoiding the cockpit.

She ended up in the kitchen after that. Mint tea sounded good. She’d just finished pouring herself a cup when kitchen door slid open. She spun around.

“Still awake, First Mate Patel?” asked Krejjh. Right, shift change. Krejjh had an annoying look of concern on their face.

“My sleep cycle’s still shifted from the last drop-off.” Arkady turned back long enough to grab her mug of tea. “Want me to head up and babysit the autopilot?”

Arkady was no pilot, but sometimes it was nice to know a real person was awake while they were all hurtling through space in a tin can.

“Captain Tripathi’s got it.” Krejjh yawned, their eyelids drooping.

Arkady set the mug back down. “You look like shit. How’re you not collapsed into bed already?”

“Grabbing a drink for Crewman Jeeter first.”

“Huh.” Arkady glanced at the time. Three in the morning. “Makes sense.”

Uplifting TSCOSI fics: a rec list

Because I think we could all use a few after the latest episode XD

(I meant to put this together sooner, but it’s been a Big Tired few days. Hopefully it’s still somewhat timely!)

Below is a list of uplifting, fluffy, funny and feel-good TSCOSI fics that I personally have enjoyed and can rec! Since we don’t have a lot of rec lists in this fandom (I don’t actually think I’ve yet seen one?) I feel like I should state upfront that this is not meant to be a Definitive List in any way, shape or form, and just only reflects my personal taste and the fics that I have read!

To keep this list at least somewhat constrained, I’m only adding fics from pre-2020 (which newer members of the fandom might not have come across), so these are all set pre-season 2.

The Rumor crew are docked on a safe planet, Violet and Arkady explore a market, and then there’s a confrontation with some space Nazis. Bit of a warning for street fighting and a suppressed panic attack (Violet’s), but it’s super feel-good, I swear <3

A Ring and a Plan by Ehlana - Brian/Krejjh, Brian has a Plan to propose to his would-be spowz, but you know what they say about the best-laid plans... Super fluffy, adorable and hilarious, this is an all-time favourite. <3

Bold Deceiver by marginalia - Violet/Arkady, Violet and Arkady go undercover as a married couple. Featuring femme!Arkady and Violet in menswear :D

Rather Be by knightinbrightfeathers - Five times Violet missed the Iris (the original Iris), and one time she didn’t. This has soooo many good headcanons and scenarios (like Krejjh burning their mouth on overly spicy snacks) and sort of lives in my head rent-free XD Also an all-time fave. The description is just spine-tinglingly beautiful <333 Also, Jewish!Brian before Jewish Brian was officially canon.

Little Truths by myhomeistheshire - Sana/Campbell, Sana volunteers to watch Campbell’s nephews at short notice. Absolutely too cute for words, I love this one.

Sleep is a Conspiracy to Make You Buy More Pyjamas by gostaks - Brian/Krejjh, a collection of scenes from different points in their relationship, mostly revolving around Krejjh getting their head around odd human behaviours like the need for regular sleep. And romantic tandem eating! :D

Hiya! I wanted to ask if you could recommend some podcasts to listen to. I’ve listen to a few like tma, tpp, wtnv, sayer, wolf359, eos10, tscosa and I’m currently listening to the once and future nerd but i’ve almost finished it. So would you happen to know any good podcasts that have lgbt characters and is maybe sci-fi, space like wolf359, sayer and tpp or horror like tma. Thank you!

Hell yea so glad you asked!! here’s a couple: -Empty: Hard sci-fi about the crew of an intergalactic colony ship waking up after several billion years in cryo to find the universe devoid of life. One of the few pods that successfully communicates how vast space is and how small we are. Similar vibes to Wolf 359, SAYER, and Girl in Space. Has a nonbinary bisexual main character! Also features a cool robot that wants to do murder! -The Pasithea Powder: an interplanetary war ends when scientists from one side leaked their government’s plan to weaponize the titular powder, a medicine designed to treat PTSD, to mind control people. After the war, a decorated soldier sees one of those scientist off world and she’s suspicious because they’re supposed to be imprisoned. So she calls her kinda ex estranged friend whose one of the imprisoned scientists. This show has unbelievably good interpersonal drama! Everyone’s messy and complex and very human. And it’s all very well integrated into the story and world building, which feature lots of well written twists and turns. Also everyone on this show is queer. Similar vibes to TSCOSI and Wolf 359 -Burst: Comedy about a woman starting a bubble tea shop on a space station then found family and hilarity ensues. Features a really wholesome coworkers to friends to found family dynamic. The show really hates capitalism and will quote Marx at you. Overall just a very fun low stakes comedy when you wanna get away from it all. Episodes are only 10 minutes long which makes them very easy to listen to. There’s a gay guy, a nonbinary alien, and a lesbian in the main cast. Similar to EOS 10. -Under The Electric Stars: Dystopian sci-fi about a nonbinary person and their robot best friend doing delivery missions to make ends meet. After a run in with cops and gangsters, they became involved with a resistance movement that opposes the corrupt government. The mc has an abusive household and they find a new loving family in the resistance it’s really sweet and wholesome. Everyone on this show is queer. Also a lot of them are also people of color (and it makes me very happy to hear my own native language in a podcast!). Similar to TSCOSI, and TPP -Solutions to Problems: comedy that’s a fictional radio advice show set in the far future. Features cohosts that are extremely wild and chaotic and crazy but in exact opposite directions, but somehow they always manage to give good advice. It’s also an affectionate parody of the entire sci-fi genre. If you’ve seen any sci-fi media, they would have spoofed it in one of the problems they gotta give advice for. Main characters are a lesbian that’s on again off again dating the space station ai that commits time travel crimes with alternate timeline versions of her, and a nonbinary alien that’s seen and experienced everything across the galaxy that gives the most insane advice delivered in the calmest way. Similar to EOS 10, and also Burst
