okayokay i just made a new tumblr account to see what they've changed (besides the "for you" being default.), and they are totally pushing it more than an old user would realize

im logged into this account in one tab and the new one in the other and tumblr is REALLY confused and im not sure where this will post but thats besides the point.

anyways when you sign up it gives you this

which is very comparable to sites/apps like pinterest and tiktok that have a personalized algorithm. when you scroll down its just random shit like Automobiles and Education. this is not pinterest. it censors stuff like sex but does NOT censor stuff like 'pee kink' . Notably!

anyways i picked some very normal interests (random shit i could think of, i left pee kink because Haha Funny) .

it then forces you to follow people! there is NOT a search, just a few trending users. it makes you pick 3 out of 10 users, one of them is the merch account, at least for me.

once you go into the actual website it looks like this! note 'for you' being default. there is NOT an option that i see to change this. this is what i was trying to look at before i ran into all the other shit haha.

time to go turn off tumblr live again ! ^^ ((tumblr fix your goddamn site

NOTE SINCE THIS HAS GOTTEN ATTENTION - I have made 2 tumblr accounts before this one (in 2019 and 2021 i believe ?) and I don't remember this in the sign up process - however, my memory is also dogshit, so please do not sue me

👾 How to Turn Off Algorithm on Your Dashboard 👾

So this post is for the people who've been using Tumblr, following people/blogs you like, hoping that every time they post you can see the stuffs they post/reblog! But there seems to be one problem... every time they post, their posts just doesn't show up on the top of your dashboard! You only saw them only hours or days later or you don't see them all, missing your mutual's post! 🫨

Is there an algorithm on Tumblr? Yes. But you can turn it OFF. Unlike Instagram which doesn't allow us to turn off its algorithm and only sees posts with high engagements, Tumblr has the option to turn OFF its algorithm - and ultimately makes your dashboard chronological/timeline-based ☝️🤓

🔮 Turning OFF 'Best Stuff First' 🔮

So, to do this, go to your settings, and go to 'Dashboard Preferences', and TURN OFF the 'Best Stuff First'.

'Best Stuff First' is the algorithm in Tumblr where it'll present you with the stuffs they'd think you'd like based on your likes and reblogs. This is usually turned on automatically by the site itself for new-comers/users to give the new users some time as we look for blogs we like and follow.

Usually after you follow lots of blogs, you'd like to see your mutual's latest posts. So here is how you turn the algorithm off!

Et voila! Just like that, your dashboard is now timeline-based and chronological. No more seeing posts from days, weeks, or months ago.

(I myself like to see what's new from my mutuals. But if you have your own preference to see the most popular stuff on the top of your dashboard, feel free to turn the algorithm on.)

⌚ Turning on Time Stamps ⌚

To make it more clear, let's turn on the time stamps. Yes, you can know when a post is posted on Tumblr.

So you'd usually see posts on your dashboard like this image below. As you can see, there are only the usernames, but no time indicator.

To see when this post was posted, you can go to the dashboard settings and turn ON the 'Show timestamps on posts, reblogs, and notes'

After turning this on, you can see that underneath the usernames, there's a timestamp! Now you know when the posts shown on your dashboard was posted!

There's even posts from seconds ago! Pretty neat and convenient isn't it ( •̀ .̫ •́ )✧ OR again, if you don't like to see the times, feel free to turn it off too!

I'm a bit out of touch with the Tumblr algorithm - any advices? I've been posting here for some years, and I've noticed my posts have been getting gradually less and less traction lately (and compared to how many followers I have, anyway).

Is there a recommended time + amount I should be posting? I'm only asking because I rely on art only as my income, and with twitter and instagram becoming more and more unusable by each day, I want to put more effort into other social medias c:

I think that... instead of changing our home dashes or making for you pages, Tumblr should add a function that is like reblogs but call it "zeitgeist." And you click it like a reblog, and it goes into the zeitgeist.

The zeitgeist is a separate dashboard that just is everything that was put into it, so it'll be a whole new hoard of posts from every active corner of tumblr every time you refresh. Whenever you're bored just tap into the zeitgeist. People will put stuff there like 37 times and you'll still have posts between them it'll be great (or it can be the only place with mandatory shortened posts, to prevent Color Of The Sky spamming, but only shortened posts, none of this "last few comments" thing. If you want to have embedded comments, have them in the replies so I can have a conversation without @ing them and digging for the last reply because it's functionally unusable if too many people engage)

Anyway.

Decided to say this here too: For my mental health's sake, i decided I'm gonna post shit and not give a fuck about the algorithm / interaction. took way too long to realize that likes don't really do much but give a temp dopamine boost. Then I think "well, why not reblog too?" then feel petty for no reason.🙄I see posts here and on twitter about how sharing / reblogging matters WAY more than 'likes'. While true, being on these sites for 10 years I can tell you nothing has changed, esp if you're not already popular, so personally it's not worth begging being anxious about. Focusing on the numbers really drains you. I like sharing what I draw and if people don't reblog it's their own loss ig. I focus on the positive small things. Maybe one day I will get to that popularity level my younger self dreamed of, but right now I'm just going to work on my art and stories.

honest tip? block any tags they use. even if the people you follow use these, it will still show you their posts containing it, but it should not recommend random posts using these tags.
