My non fiction read for the year! I listened to the audio book for this one which I definitely recommend. Jennette McCurdy deserves only good things for the rest of her life.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

Ah the faerie books. I finally gave in and read this. It was fine. It was very basic fantasy romance. It wasn't bad, it was just unfortunately overhyped. Don't love the mc though she's kinda annoying.

Return of the King by JRR Tolkien

Lord of the rings my beloved! I could scream about any lotr book forever so I'm just gonna say Samwise Gamgee is the character ever and I love faramir and he deserves only good things forever. Also the ending of this series takes my heart out and stomps on it.

In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune

Tj Klune is a master of found family and I will read everything he writes forever. This book also had an autistic ace mc, an anxious roomba, and a sadistic nurse droid and I adored every single one of them.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

I feel like I should like this book more than I did. The mc just felt too perfect and like a societal ideal of masculinity that I really didn't care about that much. And I think to some extent it may have been the point but it still felt off to me. Started this in print and switched to audio cause the writing was not my favorite. Idk if I'll continue this series or not.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

I went into this thinking it was about a satyr because of the cover. I was disappointed a few chapters in when I realized it was not. I did however really enjoy this book anyway. Very interesting how it resolves.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas

Definitely better than acotar. Feyre's somewhat less annoying. Still think this series is overhyped but I do get it now. Also I don't get why everyone acts like this is straight porn. It's so tame lol but I read fanfic so 🤷. I do appreciate that this book went more into the politics of the world. Definitely made it more interesting.

Jack is back! The powers of the Moors are shifting as Jill steals Jack’s body and the latter must ask for help from her old friends to bring balance back to her home.

I actually started reading this book back in July when I was on my Wayward Children kick, but I stopped because the beginning of this book felt kinda slow as they struggled on getting back to the Moors. But I started it over again and finished it in two sittings!

I think it was mostly timing and I loved the story, the monstrosities, the science, and the lore of the Moors, the balance of things. I also loved how much they spoke about what it means to be a hero. Since I’m back in the swing, I’ll be reading Book 6: Across the Green Grass Fields.

While one could argue that all of the squad being orphans is a convenient excuse so that no one has siblings or parents (or children) interfering with the plot, in universe it's both heartbreaking and heartwarming. This band of monster hunters really are a found family. They truly only have each other. Even Lucy was an orphan when she died. No wonder they're all so close and warm with each other. T_T

Springtrap overlooks his new space it wasnt as pristine as the old pizzeria but it would stop  people just fumbling down and finding him and...well it was isolated...only people that could find him now were his allies once he showed them.

Ironically his secondary location was just another building that had forgotten underneath the pizzaplex who knows how many these abandoned structures were down here.

He slowly thuds to the floor the only thing cutting through the silence was the sound of nearby generators as he runs a hand along his face. “i miss my family....i-i-i miss my sons, and daughters...a-and my wife...it doesnt hurt m-most of the time but now..i-in this silence it hurts the most...” He sighs.

A soft sigh fogs up the cafe window, another shitty cold day as summer turns to fall turns to winter..another month or two and the city will be covered in a blanket of snow…a sheet of white blanketing neon..it was nice though in a way, it made the city look different..if even for a short while.

He doesnt know..or cant remeber who told him about this spot..a small cafe..tv chattering some news or ad in the distance, looking down at a warm cup of coffee bringing it to his lips..some warmth to fight back the cold.

Tune out the city for a bit..the klilling, the running, driving, talking, high stakes, endless drama that threatens to shatter the mind and chrome only fuels that spiral faster..

Just a few hours..alone with his thoughts watching the rain and watching passerbys..it was no brain dance..but maybe for a bit he needed to unplug..who says you cant take a small break?

It just occured to me that if there was a term similar to "asexual" when it comes to food, that'd be me. Like, some people put so much stock into food being this all encompassing process of human bonding. But I just ...don't get it? I don't feel any sort of connection between food and community or love? I guess?? And the fact that so many people insist that this is a integeral part of being human just makes me feel so ... isolated? Wrong?

Endeavor’s (potential) death and Bojack Horseman

SPOILERS FOR MY HERO ACADEMIA CHAPTER 350//

So seeing a lot of discussion about Endeavor and what he deserves - should he die, should he be in jail etc. And honestly I’m ruling out him going to jail since japanese cultural norms don’t seem to see familial abuse as a going-to-jail crime (still pretty nasty though) and none of his family have brought it up (I also think it wouldn’t be the right thing for his family anyway for reasons I’ll get to later).

So, death.

I think if he does die it won’t be from Touya killing him. Enji is too much of a focus character to be killed like that, and it would represent the “failure” of his character arc. He’s a man who wants to redeem himself from his failure as a father, and the biggest failure is his neglect of Touya leading him to plot to kill him. For both Touya and Enji’s character arcs to end in “success”, Touya can’t succeed in his villainous goals. Touya himself can’t die either (because he WANTS to die) so lets rule out any murder-suicides.

So, if Enji does die, it would be in saving his children. And I think the child he has to save primarily is Touya. He looked away from Touya 10 years ago, so he has to look at him now (even though the plot currently has him far away from Touya there’s enough highlighting of this fact to know it will be corrected at some point). I’ve seen some people suggesting (mostly on reddit) that he’ll die saving Shoto from Touya but that wouldn’t be a “success” - it’ll just be seen by Touya as him putting Shoto above him. So while he can save Shoto, he has to save Touya as well.

And this would be a “success” for his character arc and Touya’s character arc in many ways (and Shoto to a lesser extent but I feel like Shoto’s arc with Enji is different and mostly resolved at this point)! He would show in one great act that he can put his children’s lives above his (his original sin being putting his own ambitions over the welfare of his children) and it would match the foreshadowing of his dream where his family are eating happily around the table but he isn’t there with them,

BUT! I don’t think this would be the best resolution, and this is where Bojack Horseman comes in.

So for people who don’t know, Bojack Horseman is an adult cartoon about a depressed alcoholic horse (sounds weird but it’s actually really good)

SPOILERS FOR BOJACK HORSEMAN

So, both Bojack and his best friend Diane have abusive parents - for Bojack, his mother, for Diane, her father. And over the series both parents die. And there’s one episode, Free Churro, where Bojack attends his mothers funeral and gives a eulogy (its a great episode and can be watched standalone).

And one of the great things about the episode is it addresses the difficulty in mourning an abusive parent. Bojack talks about Diane’s father, how she felt sad when he died even though “she never even liked the guy” because it meant the chance of him ever being a good father was gone forever. Bojack himself talks about how on her deathbed his mother looked at him and said “I see you” - and those words both made him very happy but also very angry. Because his mother finally acknowledged him, but at the same time she waited until the last moment to do it. He realised she could have done that the entire time, but didn’t, which meant she actively chose to be a bad mother his entire life until then.

And going back to MHA, I think this is where the issue with Enji dying as a “solution” comes. Because his whole character arc is him realising he could have been a good father the entire time, but put his ambition first every time. So him “Seeing” Touya and then promptly biting it- no, it doesn’t work, and leaves a hole in the Todoroki family. Because despite Enji thinking that the only way to atone is to seperate from his family, that isn’t the real solution. Obviously he needs to give his family freedom and space - Natsuo for example doesn’t want anything to do with his dad. But on the other hand as Rei said, “running away” was his sin. He needs to be their for his family, and ESPECIALLY Touya. He doesn’t get to run away this time, especially not by dying.

Come Tumbling Down

Tonight I read Come Tumbling Down, the fifth book in Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series. This one is again about Jack and Jill and the Moors, which is great; I love Jack. Jill going mad once again was pretty expected after how things ended last time, and I'm glad Jack got a proper happy ending this time

The detour to deal with the Drowned Gods felt unnecessary, but the book would be even shorter without it. I don't think it added much, since Cora wanting to stay here was a nigh identical plot point to Nadya staying in the Halls of the Dead. (Why is it always waterworld children?) It fleshes out the world, but I feel like the Moors almost has the same "problem" as Dominaria: it has enough content in it to be four whole planes, making all the other world-of-hats planes look bad in comparison
