I wanna talk about the fact that the stuff, completely normal real world shit shown in this movie, had me scared to watch in front of my mother because I was sure she'd just take the movie away.

Here two of my crossover ship collages of Luca/Turning Red. Since many have shipped Luca with Mei, while some people like to think that Miriam is the TR/female version of Alberto. Due to the energy of their friendships with Mei and Luca.

Regarding Turning Red and an odd bit of discourse on female characters...
I know. Turning Red inciting discourse? Stop the presses. But I recall a few tweet call out out when Mei was “destroying her Mom with her butt” as pedo bait or lewd in any way. As an aspiring writer, this got me thinking...
I feel like there's something to be said about crass and crude humor in cartoons where kids get all gross. I remember a lot of late nineties/early 2000s cartoons where jokes revolved around the young male characters exposing themselves in a TV-Y7-ish manner.
Mainly they'd be able to get away with it via humorous cover-ups like when Timmy Turner had to hoof it back home in the buff due to a botched wish. Billy from Billy and Mandy once thought he was invisible and only had a leaf covering his junk when he striped among other times.
I could go on like with Ed, Edd and Eddy having the Eds try out speedos only for them to snap off in public. However, these were largely male characters who were allowed to be all crass and childish... unlike female characters who... well, not so much outside a token few.
There was Brace Face where the main character tries to enlarge her breasts with an inflatable top only for things to get messy in typical cartoon shenanigan fashion. Outside of that, it was generally assumed that boy will be gross and junk while even tomboys don't go that far.
And I think that's where Turning Red comes in. Those balking at it might find it suspect but it's generally been uncommon for female characters to show the level of crass that male characters have been afforded.
Part of that might be legit concerns when it comes to girls being sexualized at a young age by others, especially when animation is produced by adults first and foremost. Another part of it can be the "Boys will be boys" mentality where young men can act out while young women are suppose to roll their eyes at their childish antics.
I mean... how many times have we seen the writing cliche of the one no-nonsense female character dealing with four or five other male characters who are pull immature shenanigans with each others. They always gotta roll their eyes in that "real mature, boys" fashion and be the one who whips them into shape.
Again, boys will be boys but girls will be the one who have to be responsible for them. Even more so when they're tertiary at best in the grander narrative. So Mei engaging in the sort of crudeness afforded mainly to the boys would rub people the wrong way.
Maybe some feel suspect with how many legit pedos make it into professions like animation but other times it can feel like a sort of boys club that girls aren't allowed into. A lot of terminally online people have grown to assume the worst and prefer to act rather than react in the event we have another John K. or Chris Savino.
Best to burn the suitcase rather than at least recognizing how we have a lot to unpack here.
Again, weird discourse but I couldn’t get it out of my head.
