Baizhu’s Room

(note: this was written without any leaked spoilers or lore in mind)

Genshin 3.6 finally gave us access to the back room in Bubu Pharmacy, in anticipation of Baizhu’s upcoming release and story quest. And I have to give all the praise to the designers and developers here, because this small room has some of the best environmental storytelling I’ve seen in a game in a while, with only a few simple details. Today is Baizhu’s birthday, so I wanted to talk about it a little 💚🐍🌿

Nothing in this room is neatly in its place. The chairs aren’t in position, everything on the desk is messy and strewn about, and some of the drawers are left open. There’s a pillow on the desk, as well. Baizhu is quite frail and sickly, so this all paints a picture of him constantly looking for things and working, both as a doctor and frantically on his research into immortality, without having the energy or care to keep everything neat, and probably often falling asleep at his desk out of exhaustion (hence the pillow, though admittedly it could be for Changsheng, but I kind of doubt it).

There’s medicine on the bedside tables, which is probably just as much for Baizhu as it (and all the other medicine in the room) is for his patients. The bedside chair indicates he likely sits with patients there a lot so as to be as comforting as possible, but again, it’s also likely for people like Gui and Qiqi, when Baizhu is the one in bed. The sole small washtub thing stuck in the corner behind the screen... just makes me sad. I don’t know why in particular... it just does.

All of this, combined with the lighting, and the new, unique song, creates a room that manages to feel both warm and welcoming during the day, but solemn, lonely, almost suffocating, and unbearably sad at night, completely befitting the person who practically lives here, and the two very different sides he has. I say “practically”, but we have no indication so far that Baizhu actually does live anywhere else -- with his low energy and poor health, and all those damn steps leading up to the pharmacy, I’m fully convinced now that he does live here full-time, after seeing the state of it, which is... heartbreaking. He puts on a smile for everyone around him who are relying on him to care for them (and he loves his job, he truly does!), but his tiny, cramped patient room seemingly doubles as his living space, and even though Baizhu may lie and try to hide his own suffering... this room itself does not lie, and said suffering is bleeding from every corner here. The music is elegant, gentle, comforting, and soothing, but also delicate, weak, mournful, and again unimaginably lonely...... just like Baizhu. 💔

If you haven’t been here yet in the game, I highly recommend you visit it at least once; the atmosphere is simply unmatched. I can’t wait to see what happens here in Baizhu’s story quest, and how it will wreck our hearts even more 💚💔

alex is in need of a new home. we have had him since 2020, since he was about 8 months old. he was a tnr that refused to go back outside, so we adopted him from a friend of a friend of a friend.

unfortunately, he doesn't really get along with many of our cats now, and has grown less sociable around other cats and more prone to fearfulness of them. we also have one cat in particular who attacks him. he's often scared to hang out with because she hangs out with us too. he does territorially pee, but we have every confidence in the world that this will stop once he's in a new home and more comfortable.

ideally, we would like him to have a quiet home, with one or two low energy and preferably male cats. he isn't thriving in our female-dominated / high-energy household and he deserves better than what we're currently able to give him. he will not thrive in a more-than-three-cat-including-him household, we're positive of this.

he's extremely lovey, super cuddly, and loves spending time with his humans. he loves to meow at you for food, loves cuddling on laps or next to you, enjoys soft blankets and sun spots. and he goes absolutely crazy for butt spanks and being brushed.

he does have a cataract / cloudy section in his one eye but it doesn't seem to affect him in any way.

we are unsure how he is around children or dogs, as he's never been around either.

he is free to a good, loving home. we are in the lehigh valley of pennsylvania and willing to travel within a couple hours but we do prefer a meet and greet before parting with him. he will come with a carrier, litter, food (dry and wet), and scratchers and toys!

if you are unable to adopt, please share this post! we want him safe and happy and as comfortable as he can be! he deserves a quieter and more lowkey home than we're able to give him at this time.

something really sweet happened today and i wanted to share!

so in my college (it's a 2 years course), the 1st year students of the club im in threw us a farewell party, and we were completely blown away! they all had prepared speeches for us and got us personalized gifts, it was all so sweet i almost cried! and since im also one of the heads of the club, i felt so proud and emotional!

last year, we had the worst toxic seniors to the point that i had mental breakdowns because of them, and had vowed to create a safe environment for the new students and im really happy we could do that 🥹

might as well start labelling these rambles for myself. okay so the idea that Lucy has been applying concealer since she came home from the hospital, every morning, even though she probably hasn't been leaving the house? and, in my headcanon but come on it's definitely canon canon, Jackson helping her through everything in those inbetween days. Going with her for the psych eval, doctor check-ups? Going out to get concealer and whatever else she needs because maybe she's not quite ready yet at the start. Trying to take her for coffee one morning but the buzzing of the machine gets under her skin and she has to leave. Curling up in blankets on the sofa watching trash tv and just cuddling in silence because that's what she needs. Him being there when she has nightmares or can't sleep. I know fanfic usually goes to Tim doing all this for her, and I'd like to think she did see him while she was off (however briefly that was. times, writers, give us dates and times please for the love of god). But Jackson lives there. He's her roommate and her best friend. He definitely helped her a lot through that. And that he woke up at 6am to get her more concealer, because she was probably panicking and spiralling and hadn't slept all night in anticipation but only just realised it won't be enough. In those first few days she might've even trusted him and him alone with her tattoo, albeit covered by concealer, to see if it was really covered. Because she thinks she can still see it, and he sees her spiralling, and the black ink is just imprinted on her sight at this point so the concealer is never enough and she keeps adding more. Maybe not because she hides it from him when he comes into her room later this episode but this show doesn't care about continuity so why should I? Just, show, why. Why wouldn't you give us more Lucy/Jackson comfort friendship while we had time. And now onto Tim and Harper. Because he looks so uncomfortable and is so defensive almost the entire scene. Even at the start before she mentions Lucy he's strutting around trying to act like he used to, but he knows what today is and he's panicking a little too. What if she's not ready, what if she'll never be ready? What if he pushes her too much or too little? What if he can handle seeing her there in uniform, because all he keeps seeing is her lifeless and covered in blood and dirt. And also how Harper essentially tells Tim that she's been through something like this - "every woman's worst fear". Maybe not exactly what happened to Lucy, but she pretty much implies to him that something happened to her - "and that someone's you" the nervous tight-lipped look Harper gives him as she nods. Begging him not to pry but to trust her. And he backs off almost immediately. He stops being defensive and he softens just the tiniest bit and concedes to Harper's plan. He doesn't pry, he doesn't question. Because obviously she wasn't buried alive by a serial killer but he knows what she's implying. And then he's on his own for a moment before the scene shifts and he's back to panicking, not because he's in charge of looking after Lucy today but because he isn't. We don't even really see them interact until later in processing. Did they speak at all that morning? She came in later to the briefing, so probably not before then unless he caught her beforehand but I imagine she left it as late as possible to get in and change so she wouldn't have to face people talking to her, asking after her, looking at her sadly and with pity. And then she goes off to get the shop ready. Maybe he text her, but it does seem like a Bradford thing to do to wall himself off, try and treat her like normal and act like nothing happened. Not in a bad way, just so she doesn't feel like he's protecting her or going soft on her. Treating her like a victim.

And honestly it's quite a Lucy thing to do as well. Panic and retreat into herself and her work and try and sweep through the station in a blur so no-one, not even Tim, can stop her and stop her focus on getting through the day. And the next day. And the day after that. She goes in the side entrance to the briefing room, trying to avoid the walk through everyone, arriving before everyone is completely settled and still milling around and chatting so they might not see her. And the way she just sprints to her seat. My poor lamb. I do wonder if Tim sees her through the glass but they'd have probably made a point of the shot if he did. You can see him when she looks through at the briefing room just briefly. He's laughing with Harper about something, but the next shot he's arms crossed and serious and I swear he's looking at the glass where Lucy is. And he cranes his neck up when everyone starts clapping, trying to watch her speed her way through. I'm pretty sure he's clapping too, along with Harper. I did notice that Grey doesn't clap, although maybe it got lost in a cut. Maybe he just notices how uncomfortable she looks. Unlike Nolan and Jackson who immediately join in with the applause GUYS SHE LITERALLY SAID NO PLS. I love you but c'mon. She just wants to go back to normal. Cue me crying.

Oh, and the sad look back she gives when Grey says she'll be with Harper. Tim catching her eye as she turns back, nodding solemnly, and his eyes going right back to her again. Just the look of confusion and 'why doesn't he want to ride with me?' when Lucy turns to look at them. And Lopez and Harper studying Lucy in their own eyes after the switch is announced. We really need more Lopez and Lucy generally please and thank you. And, as of s6, more Lucy and Harper. Nurture our female friendships, show, or I stg. Though the look Lopez gives Lucy as she's climbing out of the truck and jumping across. I need more Lopez and Harper appreciating Lucy plsty. Lucy just looks so focused during the whole briefing. A few little smiles during the Jackson bit but otherwise she looks like she's fighting to stay focused, be serious, be professional. She's fine. Absolutely fine.

Tim raring to go fight crime and get his mind off things. "Scaring rookies off the job is my speciality" yeah sure buddy, only because your last attempt at scaring a rookie off the job earned you a confidant and friend and far in the future, my friend, the love of your life. Insert here of me realising there isn't a word limit on tumblr, just characters per paragraph. Maybe. but the 'cannot autosave' went away when I split part of my ramble up so...good to know. Oh god I'm only 7 minutes in to this episode and I keep pausing to analyse frames. I am not binging this series properly at all.

My baby Lucy immediately shutting down and getting into defensive mode when Nyla admits why they switched. Just the expression she gets. Melissa is such a talented actor. And hey, I recognise that 'it's fine, don't you fucking dare imply it isn't fine' tone from my own defensive 'i'm fine' spirals. hey bestie. Hah, Lopez saying Jackson being on the red carpet is goodbye to undercover when they all end up in multiple documentaries and on the news getting awards or getting kidnapped (sorry Lucy). This show is so goofy and I love it but jesus they really do just throw time and continuity and logic right out that window at times. But so long as I get my Chenford and Lucy and all the other characters I love, I do not care in the slightest. Better than shows that are 100% angst all the time. I'm too old for that much stress in my stories. Lopez's little 'okay girl' face when Chen responds. Jackson's 'bestie pls' face too. Tim 100% has eyes on Lucy when he comes into processing/holding cells and she's talking with Harper. You can't see him properly but 100% he's looking at her the entire walk through until we actually get to focus on him.

Oh my god Tim looks like he's legit about to cry or hug her when they're talking in this scene. When she jokes about him keeping tabs on her and he 100% is. He always is, whether she's with him or not. We see than in s5 when he notices she hasn't checked in in a while. But he just looks so vulnerable when she says that and he doesn't reply, he can't joke back like he normally would. She doesn't brush him off either, not completely. She doesn't say she's fine when he says to let him know if she needs anything. She asks for a time machine. She acknowledges something awful happened, but she knows nothing can change that. But she can't lie to him quite in the same way that she can to Harper. She can't say it's fine. God their interaction here is so...just...a different season and he'd be hugging the crap out of her.

Hah, I see you, sneaky picture of a cat in Lucy's locker. I also saw you, sneaky note on Lucy's missing whiteboard 'hates cats (doesn't want anyone to know)'. Unless the 'hates cats' was about Caleb, something she told Tim about while looking through Caleb's fake socials. I know they're just little production props/gags for background stuff like this, but I always love having a little peek at set dressing. There's a baby, a little girl in white, a mother and daughter, and Lucy with a shooting target and a guy. Possibly the show's weapons master or from Melissa having shooting practice? I imagine someone else has zoomed and enhanced all of them. Oh but why couldn't we have that conversation between Harper and Lopez prior to this. Harper asking Lopez for help with Lucy, Lopez probably immediately agreeing just knowing it's for Lucy. More of these ladies supporting each other now or I riot. And Lucy immediately spiralling because the cool kids have asked her out for ladies night. How Lucy holds herself when they enter the venue, even before she sees its speed dating. Leading the way because she's absolutely fine and then two steps in the door and you can feel how uncomfortable she is seeing all those people, just tucking her hands right into her sleeves (god I wish I could wear big comfy jumpers like that without instantly overheating) and trying to shrink into herself. Her hands flexing and her breathing more exaggerated and erratic. She gets her confidence back a little as they talk but oh, just that panic when she walks in. Jackson you have wine glasses right there, why are you using tumblers. Oh my poor sweet Lucy. How she just shrinks back into herself so completely, even from Harper touching her, and she's just so panicked and afraid. Why couldn't we just see Lopez and Harper realising they fucked up a bit and trying to calm her down, or just making sure she got home safe. Also Luce, honey, you just got concealer all over the cute little cushion. You got so much on it that it disappeared in the wide shot! Damn, that's some good concealer. Also why couldn't you give us more Jackson and Lucy FOMOing together, show. Whyyy. Lopez telling Tim about Lucy because she knows he wants to know. The little shoulder squeeze she gives him. My heart.

The whole car conversation, but Lucy just zoning out at the end, spiralling in her mind until Harper pulls her back out. Trying to hold herself together because she still doesn't want to seem weak. Tim's talk with Nolan, the eye close he does when Nolan mentions the tattoo, because he knows getting rid of a scar isn't an instant fix, but he's also being reminded about her having that tattoo. Being branded. Remembering the tattoos on those dead women. Remembering her limp in his arms, maybe noticing the tattoo when she's being taken to the ambulance or once she's in hospital but pushing it out of his mind. The boxing scene. Ugh, my heart. They start so light and joking and she's defensive but they're comfortable. Him averting his eyes from her tattoo. The way he cannot stop smiling just seeing her there, alive, right in front of him. How he can't stop himself from turning back to keep trying to get through to her. Her expression going from neutral to defensive to angry to on the verge of tears, so desperate to not break down in front of him (or anyone). How her voice nearly breaks in 'my skin'. Chewing her lips and bouncing nervously in that 'please stop now' way when someone is close to wearing down your defenses. Her tiny quiet thanks, the awkward pause, his hands in his pockets, the boyish 'riding with me tomorrow?' and she can't help but laugh. And how he's been holding onto that ring since he found it in the desert and he almost didn't give it to her at first so he's just been carrying it around as a token for him? A reminder she's alive, even when she wasn't at the station and he couldn't see her. But now she's back and she needs that token more than him, because he can see her now right there in front of him and he cannot stop smiling. And how it sinks in for her, maybe not completely because she needs telling later, that she helped them find her. She lead the way. She fought and survived and she kept going until they could help her out of the ground. And maybe also just the fact that he kept it until now, which means he was the one who found it. God I cannot do this for every episode (or at least the Lucy/Chenford heavy ones) or I'm not getting literally anything done ever.
