the name has probably already been coined before but: here is unigender!

unigender is an EPIN (epicene in nature) gender that involves having a gender like man and woman, but being so indeterminate that you’re basically your own thing.

the flag represents, well, being unisex/unigender: white is the blend of male and female gender signifiers without necessarily being ostentatious, brown signifies a middle ground between gender without calling to mind the purple of androgyne, yellow signifies abinary and anonbinary expressions of epicenity and being unigender, and turquoise represents the color blue, which is most of humanity, whether male or female’s, favorite color.

Hmmmm if Annie fell and how would the Andromeda 5 react :))

Like what, she tripped? Fell out of bed? Jumped off a cliff?

Annie while being an adopted daughter to 5 aliens that don't know humanity inherently, she's a 16 year old who's first introduction to the 5 was through P'andor which I will state (if you're a long time follower, this is a reminder, if you're new, this is some context) she was immediately trying to mug him with a knife. He also probably looked like his human ID at the time which is... well, the picture of a large Slavic man who takes no shit.

But I'll indulge, I'll indulge, but prepare to be underwhelmed.

So if Annie fell (in the tripped context, maybe she fumbles a dance or just falls ass over teakettle on something), P'andor already has the impression she can take tougher shit than the ground. Might bark a short laugh especially if she gets right up and brushes the dirt off herself, depending on the dramatics of the fall he might jokingly award points for style, but not unless she got genuinely hurt P'andor does the quick 'You good' and move on when Annie starts walking as usual. Bivalvan would disapprove of P'andor's dismissiveness but less out of instinctual parental response and more from the fact he's grown up as a species with an exoskeleton, and Annie being human she has an endoskeleton which the soft fleshy bits on the outside. He takes a glance at whatever skin deep lesions Annie gets and puts in a bit too much stock than necessary into them, but his big main problem with that would be that Annie damaged the parts of her that would have been well protected under armour that humans don't have, and trying to associate the damage to scrapes in shell is building up his ability to cope that Annie would know what hurts or not.

You might expect that Galapagus would immediately baby Annie, but I don't think that would be the case. Aside from having the same instinct as Bivalvan (squishy shell-less human got skin damage), as a species with an unconventional method of flying, that being literal air propulsion, well there's a little bit of his cultural mentality that views children as baby birds or what have you. You could piff a geochelone aerio child (not in the least because they can be held in one human hand like Earth turtles and tortoises) and while still being an asshole, not an irredeemable bastard, the shell doing a lot of lip service (it's built in naturally to compensate for a fall, especially with all the weight of the shell itself contributing to the intensity of said fall) thanks to the inherent learning curve of 'oh yeah you're going to have to fly' children are gonna fall over anyway and heck, an adult too who would be much heavier is going to inevitably drop out of the sky like a rock. Not to say Galapagus wouldn't at least still hover over Annie for a hot sec or too, but if anything given that geochelone aerios have at least some areas of endoskeleton, so long as Annie isn't actively bleeding or straight up broken a bone he's not going to get too worked up about it.

The person that will really get worked up about it would be, of course, Ra'ad. Having absolutely no bones to actually break (his gladius doesn't count and his beak is hard to break at all) you might think he's the most prepared in dealing with skin lesions, but this is the man that grew up in an ocean and lived on land floating around like no one's business, people just don't get hurt by gravity! Not to mention, injuries in the sea are bound to attract predators, or injuries in stagnant water are bound to attract infection, or injuries are (in his culture) the first sign that you will be the next to die and dying isn't a thing his people are concerned with WHY AREN'T THEY CONCERNED WITH DEATH! It's only really his mind reading that tells him to stop right before he panics over Annie ensuing she dies... from embarrassment. If she fell and she's fine if slightly humiliated, Ra'ad will suppress his anxieties and kind of explicitly change the subject to hopefully make it clear he isn't thinking about her falling anymore (if it works it works, if it doesn't well...). And if she's legitmately hurt, Ra'ad would be actually the first to clock it since Annie like to be tough and infallible even if only for herself instead of being someone's stone, so if mentally she's wincing and grumbling etc Ra'ad will be the one to ask 'Are you actually okay?' and attempt (keyword: attempt) to be as low key about it as Annie is.

And finally I think out of all the Andromeda 5 I think Andreas is the only one who has experience with children, both in raising them and with the [alien] to human comparison to what a child is. I've mentioned my piece a whole bunch about making talpaedans ant inspired, and part of that is because Andreas would be the 'male' of an ant colony or the tradie of a talpaedan, which would mean Andreas grew up learning to parent the children of the colony's Queen and other architect/tradie pairings, expecting to in adult do the same in the colony Andreas had been married to if Aggregor didn't cause a divorce instead. So unlike Bivalvan who would claim with 100% certainty he was a father but only because he's a broadcast spawning species, Ra'ad who would claim complete opposite else he'd be actually dead to a herd of zooplankton young, Galapagus who would really be in human translation in his early 20s only remembering being a child, and P'andor that doesn't even know what sex is because prypiatosian-bs literally don't have sexual reproduction, Andreas would have nearly a life's worth of knowledge of childhood development (which is still only the equivalent of being 25ish years old, it's just Andreas being essentially a male ant) and have the most experience with a child falling over.

Which - because Andreas has experience - Annie falling over is not a big deal and if in arms reach, Andreas would lift her back up and brush her shoulders a little bit before letting her run off again and move on from the whole thing. The worst thing any parent can do is coddle their teen like a toddler and damn, Annie falling over is not as bad as what happens to talpaedan youth, it's a breath of fresh air.

This is hardly a 'P'andor exposes Annie to radiation' moment, but I did use this as an excuse to shoot forward some brief biology and culture headcanons about the Andromeda 5.

These fins were made for swimming - modified TS4 mermaid tails

These tails are modified from Hat’s and Magical Girl Sandbox´s straight fins. They are whole body meshes, and not separates as the originals. I also removed the small fins on the side because I wanted a more streamlined silhuette.

As the title hints, the tails are suitable for swimming, but not for walking on the ground.  Straight fins will clip through the floor, but why would mermaids walk anyway. I play my mermaids with Midge the Tree's mermaid mod where they change to tails in the water, so I made the tails to match my own gameplay.

They come in recolors to match Midge the Tree's scale overlays, blue, pink, green, purple and silver. In addition I added the blue-white TS4 texture, gold, and black. For females there are also two recolors of Sherabihms Maiden of the sea, one with the original bra and one with scales instead. Children also get the same recolor but only on the tail. The gills on some of the ingame pictures are not part of the textures but an overlay.

Epicene has multiple meanings. It's a category of nouns in Spanish and French, for example, in words are identical in both feminine and masculine forms, similar to the common gender (utrum in Swedish). It's also synonymous to "promiscuous word".

Epicenity is also used in English for unisex (or what we used to call "genderblind").

But in mogai circles, it can mean androgyny, gender neutrality (distinct from neutrinity, see @/outherworldlycoining), or its own thing.

I've also seen dictionaries using TV (crossdresser), effeminate, and intersex as related to it.

@/epiceneandroid has posted about it multiple times. I recommend checking the neogender called unigender

Hello. This is Archivist Jax. I was told a reference image was required for Skettil for this assignment. I do not have reference images of the Skettil because Mephit is behind on acquisitions paperwork for this project. Instead, have this drawing of an approximate shape of what a single Skettil looks like in their famous "compact" form. Don't be fooled, the model I sketched is the size of a bus and is hiding 250+ legs, pincers, claws, and various appendages underneath the portion of shell behind their head. I refuse to draw any unfolded version as each looks like a nightmare unless you're ready for it. A few more fun facts about these guys because they're one of my favorite things in the entire Multiverse:

Their mouth is on the bottom of their head. It is backwards facing so that the individual's appendages can grab food it walks over and push it into its mouth. When in space flight, they can depressurize their mouths to eat space gas and rocks, although they do not always eat at all. This is exactly as gross to watch as it sounds.

It is incredibly heavy. Like several hundred tons heavy. This makes fuel costs for transporting them expensive. As such, Skettil who have bound themselves as part of a ship's crew (generally navigation as they can survive in open space by curling into a pressurized multichambered ball and are also Ley sensitive enough to guide most ships) are one of three at most on average ships and ten at most on average space stations.

On a related note, all Skettil have wings and can perform Ley based space flight outside of a ship, but they are too heavy to fly very high or far. Instead, the Skettil have sophisticated and powerful rockets based on a fungal fuel engine they use to launch themselves for flight. If they are going spaceward, this then means they use the end momentum to fly to just below orbit. Next they release a held burst of air in a "shout" that acts and sounds like a jet engine to get all the way into orbit. Finally, they slingshot from orbit in the direction of the Ley Path or planet/moon they wish to go to next and settle in for long flight. The aforementioned space junk they eat in flight? Processed into a gas they shoot as jets to make necessary in-flight adjustments.

They don't always eat because they have three different sailcloth like organs they can spread to absorb solar, nuclear, thermal, and electromagnetic energy and process it. It is believed this was an adaptation to prevent their overeating as megafauna themselves. The Skettil seem to indicate this is how they became scavengers who process the remains of larger megafauna from Skettilex Prime into compost.

They all paint their shells in lieu of names as they have only a visual language and not a spoken one. However, since Skettil have a hierarchy of sorts based on age and size, and they never stop growing until they die, there exists one exception to this rule. The Elders, Sages, and Judges respectively are the categories of the third, second and first largest categories of Skettil. Each of these has a position of authority and a domain over which they are responsible for maintaining balance. As such, they have a sound of authority they make in order to announce use of their authority in the most trying of times. This sound, or rather its onomatopoeia, acts as a name for these esteemed Skettil.

Lastly and most importantly to me, they are all one gender. Each Skettil has a personal cycle of of going from asexual to an egg layer to asexual to an egg fertilizer. All of this happens by laying and spraying eggs in a method that is actually one of the least upsetting things to watch a Skettil do when not completely compact. That all said, Skettil have learned of other genders besides their unigender and have come to understand the concept of gender identity. The entire population of Skettil in the known universe have since come out as identifying as a race of men, despite having no genetic male of their species. Thus, these giant beetle puppies are also all transgender. As such, they have become a symbol of transgender pride in Universe 78735-Zala.

"I wouldn't shake him up if I were you. You wouldn't be able to beat him," I said.

I already saw the flicker in Jean's eyes that he had instantly taken my words extremely personally. "What did you say!?"

Not this again. At least that time, he didn't jab a finger at me close enough to make me flinch. "That's not what I meant. I can't say I would be able to beat him, either. Nor any of us, at least not solo."

"Don't decide for me what I can't do!"

Noriaki cut in, "Hey, can we please stop fighting??"

That gave me pause for a moment. Noriaki was a kid. It shouldn't have been his responsibility to keep the peace. It wasn't fair.

"Yes... I'm sorry," I apologized to Noriaki. Not for Jean, but for everything he'd had to go through. What all of us had been through.

"Would you back off!?" Jean snapped at Noriaki. "This has nothing to do with you!"

Okay. That was it. He had crossed a line.

I glared straight into Jean's eyes. I lowered my voice, but tightened it. "Don't. You ever. Speak to him, or to Jotaro, like that."

I was ready to walk away.

But Jean exploded.

"You have to have control over everyone, don't you! Acting like you know what's best, but you don't know shit!"

I froze.

There he was again, assuming I was so naïve and unburdened.

Jotaro, Noriaki, and Joseph were right there to hear everything. But I didn't care anymore.

"You don't know me, Jean! You don't know my family, you don't know what I am, what I've been through, what this world does to people like me; you don't know this place, you don't know my country! You've made it so painfully obvious since Hong Kong that all of this has been the first time you've ever taken a step outside your own turf! You don't know what's happened to me, and that I have plenty reason not to give second chances!! So quit being so fucking presumptuous already if you want us to succeed in what we actually came here to do."

"Oh, come on! All the way on the other side of the world, Suzy would never--"

"The point is not in the shame of being caught! It's that you did it in the first place!!"

"Haven't you ever cheated?"

"Oh! Like I would have the privilege to!? To take more than what I need!? Do you have any idea how hard I have to work to keep what I have? And yet, you, people like you, just take, and take, and it's never enough. You're ruining your family. That boy out there, seventeen years old, being forced to grow up too soon to save your daughter -- and you destroy it all, and then talk about yourself cheating like it's some trite adolescent rendezvous. So excuse me if I find it so unforgivable that you're betraying Suzy and seem not to even have the decency to feel any guilt about it."

"...Mashaal..."

"I know you've always looked down on me," I couldn't stop there. "Not because I'm younger, but because you think I'm weak. All after I trusted you enough to tell you what had happened to me. You know everything about me, Joseph. You should know very well that I am anything but weak!"

"But I do know--!"

"Don't lie to me! Oh, I'm sick of you, and everyone like you, making a sport out of playing with my head and pushing me to the edge to evade any accountability."

He made a motion to comfort me with his hands on my shoulders, and I shook with rage.

"Don't touch me!" I snapped at him.

He retracted his hands. "...I'm sorry."

I finally noticed my eyes were damp. I was done. "Get out."

Joseph joined me outside in the darkness. I looked up at him but said nothing.

"...Hey..." he said, timidly.

"Hey," I said, then looked back down at the dirt.

He cleared his throat. "Yes... actually... That's why I'm out here..."

I got to my feet and faced him stiffly. "Then do it properly."

Nervously, he knitted his eyebrows together for a moment. And then, he relaxed with a sigh, turning slightly to face me as he briefly glanced down at his feet.

I waited.

He looked me in the eyes. "I'm sorry, Mashaal... For looking down on you. For speaking to you with such disregard. For not listening to you."

I stared, and held out my hand.

He firmly shook mine. And then I pulled him into a tight hug.

Joseph warmly closed his arms around me. And then he said again, in a much quieter voice, "I'm sorry."

I reveled in the silence for a while.

And after we let go of each other, I demanded, "Now go get your shit together."

Did you ever notice that the Turians are what the Krogans would be if they got their act together?

Kind of but not really.

Their cultures are structured entirely differently and not only because of the Krogan's sterlisation. But on a foundational level.

a BIG difference, and although this IS genophage related but not entirely, is their perspectives on sex (as in gender but in a biological way.)

Turians don't have "gender roles" in their society. All turians are equal in the Heirarchy. We mostly interact with males but mostly because Bioware didn't feel like designing and modeling female turians since that's extra work and blah blah blah 2000s gaming gender politics.

But anyway, focusing on in-game lore for now;

Turians don't have gender roles. All Turians are expected to have weapon and combat training which they learn from childhood and in young adulthood military service is required for a year or so (I forget the exact time the mandatory service is given. I'm busy replaying so I'd have to get to Garrus talking about his mandatory service. But Garrus also has his financial family history which fucked up his early adulthood so I THINK military service is mandatory for young adults but I could be misremembering and he served briefly when his scholarship fell apart and he was unable to go to whatever Turians have in the way of university/college).

All turians are equal as there is no "feminine roles" for women. Only the identification of skills. And although there is a difference in male and female psychology in turians, it gets neglected as all turians are placed along the same path. That being one of duty and honour to the Heirarchy. And this is specifically in being a warrior. There ARE turians whose personalities fall into other areas (such as science) but they are generally looked down upon socially if not officially.

KROGANS on the other hand have a very hard binary to their sexes, and not just because of the genophage. Eve tells you in ME3 that with the genophage, female krogans live completely seperate from the males purely out of species preservation, because they can't risk any females getting killed in male scuffles or er.... nastier and more desperate acts by males looking to sire a living child.

Eve says before the genophage fucked things up, females were treated as the "wisdom" of a clan. You had the clanleader who is male, but his jobe was focused on protection and survival in terms of aggression. Tuchanka is a hellworld, after all. But each clan would have appointed female "wise-woman" who essentially acted as the true leader of the clan, giving guidance and helping steer the clanleader in what decisions would be best for the CLAN in ways that aggression and conflict could not solve.

Clearly the women of the Krogan don't always get listened to and that's how they fucked up their planet. Either that or the focus on pushing women into the role of wisdoms of a clan came AFTER they blasted Tuchanka to shit as a precaution to prevent war of that scale to break out again.

So although they seem similar because they are both warrior races, their cultures work extremely differently, Turians operate as a unigender race, while krogans operate as a balanced gendered race.

There are other BIG cultural differences such as how the Heirarchy is structured versus the krogan clan structure but I'm less confident just remembering details off the top of my head. Mainly because I enjoy digging into and thinking about the different races as individuals within a social structure more than I remember their political structures.

Although it's also worth mentioning Turians are a unified race under one Heirarchy, while Krogans work on a clan structure. Of course this gets shaken up in the game itself (to avoid spoilers) but the difference also colours their cultures... Even if Turians still wear clan colours and instinctively distrust Turians who don't wear their clan colours ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
