One of the things I miss about strike Friday photoshoot posts is going spelunking through interviews. I don’t know how I missed this one. There is joy and heartbreak and just a plethora of cool shit. There’s a snippet below, but take some time and read the whole thing. It’s from Cracked, March 2023 - just before Renfield released and right before the strike. Ben’s clearly got a good head on his shoulders and a great support system. He talks about failure and keeping his head up as well as some amazing wins he’s had along the way 💙

Excerpt:

Dealing with rejection, dealing with Hollywood, you seem completely unjaded. How have you not gotten jaded?

Define jaded.

The complete opposite of how you carry yourself.

There are moments of cynicism. But I’m still thrilled. Listen, there’s a lot of failure in this, but there’s been so much success.

There are times when I’m not doing exactly what I want to be doing, and I’ll feel that — I’ll feel the anxiety. But I’m pretty good at centering myself. I’m a very humble, humble guy. Someone (asked) me once about what it’s like to be on stage in front of 3,000 people and get a standing ovation: In that moment, everybody’s clapping, and you’re the center of attention for a second, and you feel like you’re the most important thing in the universe. You have to realize that it’s just that moment in just that place. If you cut to me 60 minutes after a show, I’m in my hotel eating a cheeseburger (watching) ESPN or on Twitter. I’m by myself.

You have to be able to make sure that you understand what’s real life. That moment (when everybody’s clapping), I think people can get lost in that. People can get lost in Twitter just pressing the @ button and seeing what people are talking about them all day and just believing everything in there. It’s just so much easier to just be real and understand (performing) is very fun — but this is for this moment. If I go two blocks away from the venue, nobody will care that I just got a standing (ovation). Doesn’t matter.

I have parents. Everybody grounds me. Nobody treats me different than anybody else. It just seems like common sense. But I feel like there are people that need that feeling of feeling that important and that beloved at all times — I think that can get dangerous. I’m very happy that I’m able to see the whole span of things and to connect with the people I love instead of living in a fantasy world. I’m not that guy on stage getting a standing ovation every second of my day.

Tavyth (High Elf, Noble/Soldier, Eldritch Knight)

He was his family's Big Brother, the captain of his father's guard—a family long-standing in the area, further into the country, the estate holding down security for smaller villages on the borderlands of the wild.

On a fateful night, the soldiers responded to a signal of a raid on a furthest village—an orc raid on a small settlement comprised of largely Seldarine Drow. It was bloody and horrible, but it was also a TRAP. The soldiers had been lured as far away as possible so the castle itself was defenseless. Tavyth's entire family was slaughtered, and the soldiers that survived scattered to the winds. Tav began mercenary jobs, a traveling sword for hire, becoming jaded and unfriendly.

THE TWIST!! Tavyth knew Astarion. BEFORE. He was a vampire. They met at some frilly noble wedding—Tavyth was shy and uncomfortable in such a formal setting, and Astarion was someone's playful little brother that stuck by his side the whole time out of boredom. They hit it off!! They were very fast friends!! Tavyth, yet unjaded, timid and charmed, fell head over heels but never said a word. Content to just be very sweet friends. And then not only did he lose his family, Astarion ran off and died too.

And then 200 years later some elf that looks exactly like a cartoon ghost of that boy threatens him at knifepoint on a beach and introduced himself, get this, as Astarion. Tavyth however is so darkened and pessimistic he rightly guesses that he will not be remembered. The most he said at the time was "Aren't you supposed to be dead?" (They work through it as much as they are able and absolutely get together in the process, but it is difficult bc 1. Astarion is very obviously still trying to manipulate him at the start and 2. He doesn't want to seem like HES manipulating Astarion. Which frustrates Astarion, who sees this hesitation as withholding information)

OTHER LITTLE THINGS!!

Tavyth favors elvish to common. He can't help but feel protective of the tieflings, because it all reminds him of the Drow village of people just trying to get by. His family had a lot of magic users. He is a rough and rowdy lad after so many years as a sword for hire but he still refuses to cut his hair because his sisters used to compliment him on it so he likes to take care of it.

Skipped thru the new unjaded jade video and found it so crazy how she was saying "I don't want to break up with him but I know I'm closing my essence off from a higher self and warding off new things from entering my sphere by not honouring this intuition and I know it's a disservice to my self-loyalty to refuse actioning this breakup and I know it'll hurt but it's in service of growth" and it just started to sound like tiktok therapist word soup LARGELY bc she was so upset and fully having a nervous breakdown about it and I think it's so crazy that she stopped crying put the camera down left it a few days transferred the files of herself sobbing and barely making sense btwn the tears + new age psych talk and then edited it into a montage containing ceilings by lizzy mcalpine who is famous for filming a tiktok sitting in her shower singing a song about the 1975 when she was like 16. My brain is not wired to process the surreal postmodernist nature of the things I choose to click on youtube

Good morning!

I'm the same person who sent you Happy Mother's Day and Happy national chip and dip day, and I just wanna say something.

It's hard to explain why I do this, but for the longest time, I had trouble finding like... a source of happiness for everyday. I don't mean it in a depressed sort of way, but more of a "everyday is the exact same thing" way. YouTubers, like Unjaded Jade, advise a person to search for something special everyday; it could be something tiny, such as the way a stranger smiled at you, or something big, like your birthday. So I developed this habit of searching for the most random days (even if they weren't celebrated in my country) and try to find something special about it, ygm? It works well enough for me although people find that pretty weird, and I wanted to share it. You seemed like a very nice person to do that to, and I thought these random national days in your inbox won't bother you.

However, if they do bother you, just tell me, and I swear I'll stop. Don't worry, I'll do it without any hard feelings; it's understandable. But if they don't, well, in that case, happy national chocolate covered raisins day! (If it's OK with you rn but it got bothersome eventually, you can also tell me, and I'll stop.)
