#130
(part 1) (part 2)
The civilian’s house used to be the one place she could get away from work—relaxing, peaceful, safely removed from the pains of her job. It’s taken two weeks for her job to decide it wants to live here, actually, and has taken over her little safe haven and her mind.
She gets back from a day of journalistic interviews and writing articles, and makes just enough time for dinner before leaping head-first into the piles of paper she’s slowly accumulating around her house.
She’s one shopping trip away from investing in some red string—conspiracies and suspects connected in her mind, pieces of paper and theories lumped together. All of it begs the question, drags her back to the reason she’s doing this—
Where has the hero gone?
The civilian goes over her notes. They were last seen leaving the agency a month ago. The news stopped reporting on it after five days. The agency made one hell of a show of looking for them before it all seemingly went quiet. She’s seen the hero’s successor about town, and the reactions he’s garnered—distaste, anger. The agency made a move to replace the hero too fast, and everyone’s seen it. Everyone is suspicious.
She can’t let that get in the way of her little investigation, though. The agency has certainly been weird about it, but that feels too obvious. She can imagine the real perpetrator is rubbing their hands with glee knowing that everyone has their eyes elsewhere.
The villain association. An undeservedly professional name, considering the business villains like to conduct, but that’s besides the point. Villains—a villain, perhaps—would be the obvious choice. Maybe the hero got too close to something, acted too much like an irritating fly that needed to be swatted. Then again, villains love bragging, and having a hero in their possession would undoubtedly send them into a self-absorbed frenzy. They’ve been even quieter on this than the agency has.
The civilian flips through some of the papers in the pile closest to her. Half of these are documents she’s loaned from the library—she’s already maxed out her extension, and they’re due back next week. She doesn’t have them for long. She needs to figure this out soon.
She’s in the midst of poring over some of her paperwork with a highlighter—nothing from the library, she doesn’t need a vandalism fine on top of all this—when there’s a noise at her front door that she instantly recognises. Something, rather hurriedly, being shoved through her letterbox.
It’s too late to be getting post now. The civilian rushes for the door just in time to see the little envelope drop from the hole and onto her mat.
She snatches it up and rips it open without a thought, letting her eyes graze over the words of the letter inside. Then she looks a little more carefully. Then a third time, because there’s no way.
It’s been interesting to watch you play, Ma’am, but I suggest you keep yourself out of business that isn’t yours.
She tears the door open but she already knows she’s too late. Whoever left this for her is long gone.
She makes doubly sure to lock her door has she closes it behind her, her gaze back on the letter. If she can even call it that—it looks more like it was torn out of a notebook and scribbled on the way here.
A warning. She shuffles back into her kitchen, where the papers she was looking at are now toppled all over the floor. She carefully sets them back on the table, and after a moment of deliberation lays the letter on top of them.
Journalists like her don’t tend to take warnings.
After all, new evidence just fell into her lap.

I saw someone saying that Filbrick had the right to kick Stan out of the house because it was his house and he was the one paying the mortgage and that it didn't matter that Stan was a teenager because the house belonged to his father, so Filbrick was within his right to act they away he did. What do you think?
Regardless of whether it's your house or not, or whether you're paying mortgage on it or not, you do not have the right to kick your underage child out. You are responsible for your children. Please tell me that's satire.

Uhm, since I haven't heard about it on here.
If you are not a US citizen and you thought it'd be great to come over or something for a convention or some other fun thing, I sincerely suggest you DO NOT come to the US right now. I have heard of several different accounts of visitors being detained illegally, as in they are from nations with strong passports and following the rules, yet they have been detained in ICE facilities violating all sorts of protocols and their rights to due process. A German tourist was in solitary (I think for 9 days). And the government is not necessarily keeping people informed about where they are taking you for detention. (They transferred a Palestinian protestor from New York to Louisiana and for a day people could not find this man. The only reason I suspect they succeeded was because the story was gaining traction.) You might legitimately get lost in the system.

I don't know if the UFW comms worker who posted this knew it or not but this photo is a clear violation of workplace safety standards: that worker is in serious risk of being buried in a potentially deadly trench collapse, because that is a five-foot-some hole that is not secured at all. trench collapses kill dozens of american workers every year, mostly in construction, but ag injuries are notoriously massively underreported. farm workers routinely endure conditions which are not just difficult, but actively dangerous; some of that risk is an information problem (workers don't know they're being asked to do something incredibly risky), but it's mostly a power problem. happy cesar chavez day.

Help Needed in an Unreported Missing Person's Case
I only found out about this through facebook and the Moxxy Forensics group which is working on this case. This story is very confusing and has many twists and turns. Currently her son is spearheading the case as the police where she was last seen in Arkansas refuse to take a missing person's report despite the suspicious circumstances. I will be providing a brief summary with an attached websleuths thread and the International Missing Persons Page.
Sherry Lynn Eastman was born on October 4th, 1956 in Illinois. She attended schools in California, before she married William Scott Stephan Eastman on December 29th, 1979. This is where the timeline becomes muddled. At some point, Sherry ends up in Germany and gives birth to her only child, a son in 1981. She may have been stationed there due to possible army service. At some point she ends up in Searcy County, Arkansas and divorces William Eastman in 1982 or 1983. The problem is the last reported contact with Sherry occurs on December 20th, 1982, when she sells a property in San Patricio County, Texas gaining a large, undisclosed sum of money. Eight months before her disappearance she supposedly signs temporary guardianship over her son to a couple, Valeria and Richard George. Half a decade after the sale of the property, the son was illegally adopted by the George's. Both the guardianship and adoption paperwork appear to be forged. A document called a "delayed birth certificate" was issued for the son that gave him a new name and social security number. Sherry's private documents, that would have had her signature on it, were found with Richard George's possessions after his death. This included the son's actual birth certificate.
It is presumed that whatever happened to Sherry between the end of 1982 to 1983 wasn't voluntary. The adoptive siblings confirmed to her son that his mother was Sherry and they claimed that she was dead. Sherry was 26 years old at the time of last contact. The disputed location of the disappearance makes a missing person's report difficult to file. The police in Arkansas refuse to take a missing person's report for Sherry as of 2025. The nature of this missing person's case requires input from the public. If you have information you can email Kaycee Connelly of Moxxy Forensics at [email protected]

What if I tell you that my Spotify played the Tangled Kingdom dance music and I instantly thought of Eclairette?
STOP BECAUSE I THINK ABOUT THAT TRACK EVERY SINGLE DAY AND IT'S DONE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE /POS TO MY BRAIN WHEN IT COMES TO ECLAIRETTE!!!!!
I'm only slightly embarrassed to admit that kingdom dance was like...one of the main driving factors behind one of my most self indulgent aus...Like that entire scene has stuck in my brain for however many years ago Tangled came out and the fact that it came back so loudly in regards to this single eclairette au drives me INSANE in the best of ways.
Save me thoughts of Neuvillette experiencing a human festival for the first time in his life but standing on the sidelines because he doesn't know what he's supposed to do...save me thoughts of Eclair taking Neuvillette's hand to keep him from getting lost while walking around but allowing him to explore and learn at his own pace...save me thoughts of Neuvillette admiring Eclair dancing in the plaza with others before he's not so subtly pushed in to join her by an observant bystander...save me...

im glad you enjoyed it!! here is part dos - the mystery continues...
Unreported
(part 1) (part 2)
It’s been interesting to watch you play, Ma’am, but I suggest you keep yourself out of business that isn’t yours.
The words stare up at the civilian from their spot on top of her pile of paperwork whenever she’s home, and from their new spot on her desk when she's at work. The letter is crumpled from countless hours staring at it, analysing it, studying every swirl of the Ys and the dramatic crossing of the Ts. The thing is burned into her mind, and yet she still finds herself staring at it like it’ll vanish the moment she turns away.
“Morning,” her boss greets flatly, as she's busy staring at the word 'keep' like it owes her money. “You still booked in for that interview with [Superhero]?”
The civilian heaves a deep sigh. In the whirlwind of frantic research and threatening notes recently, she’d completely forgotten about that. She flips her diary open and, with confirmation that yes, she does have that interview today, she resigns herself to simply getting her notes ready for later.
-
“It’s really exciting to see this kind of change happening in the agency,” the civilian offers brightly, and the superhero nods. “Do you think adding this new technology will make your crime-fighting easier?”
The superhero smiles in that practised way most heroes do. “It’ll be the first of its kind. Not only will our jobs be easier, but I hope it will give others the inspiration to do good with us.”
“I think all of us normal people aspire to achieve just an ounce of the greatness you bring to this city.” The civilian mirrors his smile, albeit less practised and more disingenuous. “Thank you for joining me today, [Superhero]. It really has been a pleasure to hear about these developments from the genius that made them.”
“Oh, the pleasure’s all mine. Thank you for having me.”
The civilian nods, making a quick note on her pad, and with that the interview is over.
Someone approaches the superhero with a coat—an assistant, the civilian assumes—which he shrugs on with a quick thank you. He stands and the civilian follows him, half because that’s the polite way to end things and half because she realises this doesn’t have to necessarily be the end.
The superhero accepts a steaming cup and turns to leave.
“Actually—”
The superhero pauses, giving the civilian a curious glance. She clears her throat awkwardly—planning this might have been a better idea. “Uh,” she starts, super naturally, “I have a few questions of my own, off record, if you don’t mind.”
She can practically see the cogs turning in the superhero’s mind. His assistant is flitting her wide-eyed gaze between him and the civilian like she just asked to kill him outright. “Sure,” the superhero says after a long moment, the word blatantly suspicious, “but I do have a meeting in a few minutes.”
The civilian shoots him a grateful smile, settling back in her seat and watching victoriously as the superhero does the same. “Of course. I’ll make it quick.” She flips her notepad open on a clear page, her pen poised eagerly. “Now, the world has its eyes on [Hero], who has been—”
“Oh, Jesus, no.” The superhero cuts straight across her, professionalism seemingly forgotten to abrupt exasperation. “We looked for [Hero], we turned nothing up, we presumed them dead. Why can none of you journalists leave this alone?”
Not exactly a clue, but definitely an interesting reaction. “A lot of journalists are speaking to you on this but… none of those conversations are published?”
“We don’t want them to be.” The superhero scowls, leaning back in his chair. “We had enough people on our back when they first disappeared. People have moved on—I’m not about to bring that heat back by bringing it to the media’s attention again.”
The civilian makes a note in her notepad. “Right. Have you—”
“What’re you writing?”
“Oh.” The civilian holds her notepad up to him, showing him the single ‘avoiding’ she’s managed to get down. “It’s just my notes.”
“Don’t write this down. I don’t need the press reporting on this stupid thing again.”
“It’s just for me, [Superhero]. None of this is getting published, don’t worry.”
He doesn’t say anything, but his stare hardens. The civilian takes the hint and flips it closed. “Have you still been looking, even though it’s not repo—”
“Thank you for the interview,” the superhero butts in coldly. “I have to be getting to my meeting now.”
He stands without waiting for a response. The civilian fumbles to get to her feet as well.
“Oh, okay, well thanks—” is all she gets out before he sweeps out the door and leaves her with no answers and a lot more questions.

"37% of Incidents" is so vague I love it. Obsessed with the fact that "Incidents" is capitalised as well. The drama!
IMAGE ID: screenshot of a YouTube video entitled 'The Office of Incident Assessment and Response is Recruiting' posted by 'The Office of Incident Assessment and Response'. The video is paused on a shot of stock footage of pedestrians in a street, overlayed with the words '37% of Incidents in the U.K. go unreported'.

Hello, all!
So, I've been trying to make an overview of the Steph's Crew sequels for you... but it has been taking forever. I did not know how COMPLICATED this story was while I was setting it all up lol.
But yeah. In the meantime, how about I show you some cool stuff?
Character Names + Meanings (for the main cast of UVC):
Stephanie:
The name "Stephanie" has Greek origins, deriving from "Stephanos," meaning "crown" or "garland."
This is a good name for a main protagonist - could indicate her central role within the story, especially regarding the mystery and investigation.
Ben:
"Ben" is often a short form of "Benjamin" or "Benedict," (it's the latter in this case), and both mean the same thing - "son of the right hand" or "blessed."
This name could suggest a significant role in the life of other characters, like Stephanie.
Also indicates what a genuinely kind, good person he is, especially in contrast with some of the other folks in this story lol. Like his wife.
Dylan:
"Dylan" is a name of Welsh origin, meaning "son of the sea" or "born from the ocean."
This name might symbolise his adaptability or fluidity in relationships and life circumstances. He's known for being very chill and easygoing, even in tense moments.
Alice:
"Alice" is often associated with the meaning "noble" or "of noble birth."
Also could be a reference to Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" story (about an ordinary girl finding herself in a magical world).
In the story, Alice could represent a character with a strong sense of honour or nobility, perhaps dealing with issues of loss and relationships (which she does in this sequel... mild spoiler alert).
Bret:
The name "Bret" could be a variation of "Brett," which is short for "Bretton," meaning "man of Britain," or "a native of Brittany."
In the context of the story, Bret's character might have elements tied to his origins or background. Doesn't really say much about him as a character (unfortunate, as there is a lot to his character! Especially in the sequel).
Elise:
"Elise" is a name of French origin, derived from "Elizabeth," meaning "God is my oath."
This name could signify a character with a strong sense of faith or determination. This suits her a lot... it's strongly suggested that El and her family are religious, and she as a character is very determined, strong and principled, and she passionately stands up for herself and what she believes in, even if her views aren't popular with others.
Connor:
"Connor" is an Anglicized form of the Irish-Gaelic name "Conchobhar," meaning "lover of hounds." Or dogs in general.
This name could hint at loyalty or association with dogs, which might relate to his role as a supportive friend. Dogs are loyal companions, and he is a good friend to Elise when they're in Cambridge together, so I'd say that definition fits.
Daisy Sommer (Connor's lecturer):
"Daisy" is a flower name, often symbolizing innocence and purity.
The surname of "Sommer" (German for summer) might evoke a sense of warmth or positivity, reflecting her character's disposition.
Daisy is a warm, bubbly person, and she has a lot of enthusiasm for her work (and just life generally) that makes her stand out to Connor in the story. It also rubs off on people a lot, so people generally just enjoy spending time with her.
Rachel:
"Rachel" is of Hebrew origin, meaning "ewe" or "innocence."
This name represents purity or vulnerability. And she's very vulnerable in book 2, so that fits well too.
Gordon:
The name "Gordon" is of Scottish origin, associated with a place name meaning "spacious fort."
It might convey stability or a strong presence in the story.
Gordon is the opposite of "stability" lol. But he has kind of a strong presence in the story (though I will say, since there's soooo much going on in the story, he probably hasn't got that strong of a presence lol), and in Rachel's story especially.
Charlie:
"Charlie" is often a short form of "Charles," which means "free man."
This name showcases Charlie's sense of freedom or independence. Which... in the first book, there was a specific part where Elise said that was a similar reason why she fell for Bret... his freedom, his desire to live for himself and not conform to what others want from him. All that to say, the girl's got a type.
Mary:
"Mary" is another Biblical name (woohoo!) of Hebrew origin, meaning "beloved" or "bitter."
Could also be a reference to the Mary in the Bible... Mother of Jesus (as well as this pure, good and dutiful woman who always does what God asks of her. Blessed and highly favoured. Mary Johnson isn't perfect by any means, but she's known for being the "good" twin, and she is also academically gifted)
Everybody loves Mary. And she can be rather bitter at times, I suppose. This definition fits well, too! (Oh, and, no spoilers or anything, but Mary in the sequel goes through a lot... it's sad what happens to her)
Angel (Charlie's cousin):
"Angel" is a word often associated with heaven, divine messengers or goodness.
In the story, this character may symbolise a positive influence or aid.
This girl is honestly not important until like halfway through... when the summer formal plot comes in. She couldn't find herself a date, so Bret agreed to go with her (not for the best of reasons... but still a nice gesture from him). They don't end up together or anything (they don't even go together in the end), but in the short time they spend together, she leaves a huge impact on him. Some people just have that effect on others, you know?
Isn't this cool?
Let's make this a tag game!!
Rules for Character Names + Meanings Tag Game:
Make a list of your main OCs and find out the meanings of their names. Then write down their definition and whether or not you think the definition fits their character.
Tagging these people to try it out: @mysticstarlightduck, @winterandwords, @gummybugg, @clairelsonao3, @aziz-reads, @exquisitecrow, @ember-writer

Thinking about how @lowcallyfruity was saying that NRC should have a marching band and/or cheer club, and while I can’t think of any of my NRC OCs who would want to be part of a cheer team, I do think my Twst! Iago OC, Sinbad would want to be part of the marching band!
