Oh so gracious Petal, won’t you please feed us some Swap W.D. head canons? 🙏
Open wide, here comes the HCs!
He’s callous and generally unsympathetic. His past experience has left him cynical, pessimistic, and deeply mistrustful. Humans and monsters can and will lie / cheat / manipulate and go to any dirty lengths for their desires. He refuses to accept what they say or do at face value.
The only thing he trusts is their SOUL. The body can lie, but a SOUL? It only knows honesty.
And he knows every way to make it talk.
He enjoys studying biology, anatomy, SOULs, and chemistry. While he might peruse other subjects, those four are his main love. When he is in his lab conducting experiments or pondering a new thesis, he is truly in his element.
Loves his brothers to an arguably unhealthy extent. Their trauma left a deep scar on him and he developed an unhealthy codependent relationship with them. The three can’t be separated for long, so you can expect a package deal for the first few years you’re together.
This dependency also leads to bouts of anxiety and paranoia for their wellbeing. This will extend to you very shortly.
And this will, inevitably, lead to him spying on you as he does his brothers. GPS / trackers / creating obedient dolls using stitched up SOULS to guard you he’s just kidding don’t be mad unless maybe you’re open to the idea— / Asking Undyne to hack into nearby security camera / etc
He won’t forbid or restrict your movement. He just craves the instant reassurance that you’re okay. This will be a bigger issue early on in the relationship, and while he adjusts to being on the surface with so many humans. It’ll ease over time.
Speaking of humans. . . It will take him time to get used to being around them. All of his previous encounters with them ended in violence or death. He’s not sure he could ever trust another besides you, but he’ll. . . Try. In time.
The only form of human content he’ll readily consume is their entertainment and food.
Enjoys watching dramas. The more ridiculous or outlandish the premise / twists, the better. The few times he takes a day off—and not to go on a date with you—he’ll sit on the couch and marathon soap operas. He’ll get into it, too. Expect thrown popcorn and tissues to litter the living room while he watches (don’t worry he will clean up once done!).
Big fan of spicy foods. The spicier the better. If it’s turning his face blue and orange, he’s a happy camper.
Like Stretch collected honey, Thread collects spicy chocolates. He can be bribed for a new kind of spicy chocolate he hasn’t had before.
And if you make him spicy chocolate? He’ll swoon.
Dates with him are meticulously planned out. He’ll have reservations, schedules, and back ups made if anything falls through. This makes them grander, but it also means it takes a while before the next date is ready.
You can expect literal fireworks as part of your dinner show. He’ll get a boating license to take you out for private midnight swims. He’ll work for days to craft an indoor garden complete with a zen waterfall in your basement.
Does not like spontaneity. Especially if it involves going to public, unsecured areas.
Does not get jealous, per se, but does get anxious about your wellbeing. His discomfort with anyone close to you stems from fear they’ll hurt you, rather than him thinking you’ll cheat on him.
That being said, he does feel that it’s disrespectful to knowingly court someone in a relationship. He expects you to express that boundary and if you need help keeping it—like someone ignores your rejection—he will readily step in.
He knows he’s a lot to deal with at first, but please be patient with him. If you stick with him through the rocky start, he’ll stand with you through anything.

first image: two-part meme of joey from friends. first part is a picture of him smiling at something out of frame, captioned "The hotel's free WiFi is really fast". second part is him staring wide eyed in horror, captioned "Your IP address starts with 172.16.42.x".
second image: lain from the anime "serial experiments lain" sitting in a chair in a dim room, in front of a glowing computer screen, and smiling at the camera. the text boxes in the image say:
Hey, guys. Lain Iwakura here to explain the joke.
You see, when a computer like your laptop or smartphone connects to wifi, the router assigns it a "local IP address" to distinguish it from other machines on the network.
Most routers use IPv4 for this, where an IP address is four numbers separated by periods. The first two or three numbers of your local IP address are usually the same for all machines on the LAN, and the most common schemas for local IP addresses are 192.168.0.x or 10.0.0.x. Those are just common defaults - they can be set to anything in the router's configuration.
The address schema 172.16.42.x is not a common default for a normal router. It is the default for a device called a "WiFi Pineapple", which is a hacking tool primarily intended for "pentesting", i.e. finding exploitable vulnerabilities in a computing or networking system. The WiFi Pineapple acts as a router from the perspective of the computers on the local network, but a malicious actor can use it to passively scan those computers for vulnerabilities, and can even spy on network traffic going through it. Thus, the joke is that the person in the hotel, finding that their local IP address is under 172.16.42.x., realizes to their horror that the hotel's LAN has been pwned by a (likely malicious) rogue access point, possibly causing their computer to be cracked and their sensitive information to be stolen by cybercriminals. In light of this breach, their panic is understandable! Always keep your software up to date and never connect to a suspicious or unsecured wifi network!

yes. but no promises.
why are the locations sometimes inaccurate?
the locations i post are based on the isp address of the camera feed, not the location of the camera itself. this means the location is only approximately accurate, and will center in more urban/populated/developed areas in parts of the world where isps are sparse. i will reblog location corrections if they appear to be accurate. geoguessr autists are always welcome.

So, something I've noticed. The bureau's are suppose to be hidden safehouses but also function as shops, but isn't a building with only 1 entrance, and that entrance being on the roof, really suspicious? How is it suppose to be a shop if no one can get in or even knows it's there? And how does Malik leave the bureau with one arm?
I did wonder about that and AC wiki helped me form this headcanon:
So, for me, the bureau is composed of three parts (and an optional fourth part which I’ll get to later): the front shop, the main chamber and the Rafiq’s office.
The room we see whenever Altaïr jumps down from the rooftop is called the main room (according to AC wiki) and this is where any ‘visiting’ Assassin can relax or rest until the start of their mission.
The second room we see where the Rafiq (or Dai in Malik’s case) can always be seen is the Rafiq’s office where an Assassin and the Rafiq can discuss the current mission and also have all the records of past and current missions and information/intel.
I actually assumed that the front shop and the Rafiq’s office are the same room until I thought about it and went “That’s too risky, right??? Like, anyone could just enter while there’s an Assassin-related discussion happening???” and such a risk seemed too stupid for the Brotherhood to do so I assumed there is a third part we don’t know about:
The front shop and any rooms it might need (like a storage room/area) with a novice(s) working as a ‘clerk’.
But then the question becomes how can the Rafiq access the front shop?
The common answer would be there is a door south of the room that we cannot see because of normal camera angles.
The more fun and more secretive answer would be:
It’s a hidden door.
Because every Rafiq's office has a similar setup with enough space behind the counter for a door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, I talked about a possible fourth part and this is more my preference than anything else but I think a front shop that directly leads to the Rafiq office is too risky as well so I headcanon that there are ‘normal’ rooms between the two. A small bathroom because Assassins using public baths sound too risky thanks to the possibility of anyone seeing their missing ring finger and the idea they would leave their gear (especially their hidden blade) in a pretty unsecure place sounds stupid, a kitchen with a nearby dining hall, maybe quarters for the novices and informants or guest quarters, maybe even the Rafiq's private quarters or private office (or both?) and (like I mentioned earlier) any rooms that the front shop might need. Then to get to the Rafiq’s office there will be a hidden door that looks like a wall. This fourth part is optional for me because, well, we'd have to take in consideration just how big the bureau looks on the outside for this part to even be possible. If it's not, I guess... it's bigger on the inside XD
Anyway, that’s how I think the bureaus during the Third Crusades operated because the alternative “the Rafiq’s office is also the front shop” sounds too risky for me XD

Safety First: Navigating Heavy Equipment with Confidence
Tumblr media
Heavy equipment serves as the backbone of various industries, including construction, mining, agriculture, and forestry. These powerful machines enable the efficient completion of complex tasks, but their operation requires an unwavering commitment to safety. Due to their sheer size and power, heavy equipment demands strict adherence to safety protocols. In this comprehensive blog, we'll explore crucial safety tips for using heavy equipment, covering everything from training and certification to emergency procedures.
Training and Certification Operating heavy equipment requires a solid foundation of training and certification. Proper training equips operators with a deep understanding of the machinery's features, controls, and safety guidelines. Certified operators are better prepared to make informed decisions, handle unexpected situations, and reduce the risk of accidents.
Read and Understand Manuals Every piece of heavy equipment comes with an operator's manual provided by the manufacturer. These manuals contain valuable information on machine operation, maintenance requirements, and safety precautions. Familiarize yourself with the manual thoroughly before operating the equipment to ensure safe and proper usage.
Pre-Operational Checks Performing pre-operational checks is essential to prevent accidents caused by mechanical failures. Regularly inspect the equipment for signs of damage, leaks, or wear. Check fluid levels, tire pressure (if applicable), and ensure that all safety features, such as lights and alarms, are functioning correctly.
Safety Gear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Operators should always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while operating heavy equipment. This may include hard hats, high-visibility clothing, gloves, ear protection, and safety glasses. PPE is designed to minimize the risk of injury in case of accidents or unforeseen events.
Seat Belts and Enclosed Cabs If the heavy equipment is equipped with an enclosed cab, operators must always wear seat belts while operating. Seat belts provide an extra layer of protection in the event of sudden movements or accidents.
Maintain a Safe Distance Operators and other workers must maintain a safe distance from operating heavy equipment. Establish clear work zones and restricted areas to prevent unauthorized access and minimize the risk of accidents.
Communication Protocols Effective communication is vital in a work environment involving heavy equipment. Ground personnel and operators should establish clear communication methods, such as hand signals, radios, or signaling devices, to convey instructions and warnings.
Avoid Overloading Exceeding load capacities can compromise the stability of the equipment and increase the risk of tipping over. Adhere to manufacturer guidelines regarding load limits to prevent accidents.
Mind Your Surroundings Always be aware of your surroundings while operating heavy equipment. Watch out for obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles, particularly in busy job sites. Use mirrors, cameras, and other aids to enhance visibility.
Emergency Procedures All operators should be well-versed in emergency procedures. Understand how to shut down the equipment quickly in case of a problem and know the steps to take in the event of an emergency.
Proper Parking and Shutdown When parking heavy equipment, ensure that it is on a level surface and all safety devices are engaged. Lower attachments to the ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine before leaving the equipment.
Secure Loads Properly When lifting or carrying loads, make sure they are securely fastened using appropriate attachments. Unsecured loads can shift, causing an imbalance and potentially leading to accidents.
Adapt to Weather Conditions Weather conditions can significantly impact heavy equipment operation. Rain, snow, and wind can create slippery surfaces and reduce visibility. Adjust your driving behavior and exercise extra caution during adverse weather.
Scheduled Maintenance Scheduled maintenance is essential for keeping heavy equipment in optimal condition. Regular inspections, fluid checks, and servicing help prevent unexpected breakdowns that can lead to accidents.
Clean and Organized Work Area A clean and organized work area is essential for safety. Remove tripping hazards, debris, and obstacles that could impede the safe operation of heavy equipment.
Avoid Distractions Operating heavy equipment requires full concentration. Avoid distractions such as phone calls, texting, or engaging in conversations that divert your attention from the task at hand.
Tire Safety Inspect tires for wear and damage regularly. Proper tire maintenance ensures stability and prevents blowouts that can lead to accidents.
Beware of Power Lines Exercise caution when operating heavy equipment near power lines. Maintain a safe distance to prevent accidental contact, which can result in electrocution.
Immediate Reporting If you notice any mechanical issues or abnormalities during operation, stop using the equipment and report the problem to supervisors or maintenance personnel immediately.
Continuous Training and Improvement Safety protocols and technology are constantly evolving. Stay updated with the latest safety practices and techniques through ongoing training, seminars, and workshops.
Conclusion Operating heavy equipment is a task that demands precision, knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to safety. These comprehensive safety tips can help operators minimize risks, prevent accidents, and ensure the well-being of everyone involved. From proper training and certification to thorough pre-operational checks and effective communication, each step plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe work environment. Safety is a shared responsibility, and everyone on the job site must work together to prioritize it. By embracing a culture of safety and adhering to these guidelines, operators can confidently operate heavy equipment while mitigating potential hazards and contributing to the success of projects in various industries. Exit Strategy, Chapter 7
(Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For the link index and a primer on The Murderbot Diaries, read this one! Like what you see? Send me a Ko-Fi.)
In which we finally get one of the more obvious jokes done properly.
Murderbot is full of shrapnel, and in a poor mental state, but still at 83% performance reliability on the physical level which isn't bad. It sees Gurathin and Ratthi next to a maintenance panel by the gate, that reads "Manual Release" in many languages.
I didn’t even know they had those in ports. I’m a SecUnit, not an engineer.(1)
MB's knee is somewhat less reliable, so the humans help it to the shuttle, where Mensah ensures that it gets in before she does. MB finds it hard to override its security programming, but obeys, and it becomes clear Pin-Lee was ready on the controls when they take off immediately when Mensah says they're clear of the hatch.
Ratthi helps remove the shrapnel from MB's knee, even without MB explaining that putting it in the company's care again would mean a cubicle, not the MedSystem Ratthi himself would get.(2) Mensah, up with Pin-Lee, becomes furious that an anonymous corporate resident of the station has launched a ship on intercept course with them.
MB decides to stop messing around, and sends the covert keyword to the company ship. It takes a moment, but acknowledges, and MB gives loose detail that bonded clients are in "hazardous retrieval". The shuttle reports the gunship turning toward them, and MB watches the sensors. The gunship accelerates, and as MB wonders if they're communicating with the likely-Palisade ship, powers weapons.
Ratthi asks if MB is okay, to which it says, "Not really". The Palisade ship has slowed and changed course, as the shuttle is swallowed by the gunship as it passes through. Ratthi thinks the not really is physical, but Gurathin(3) cuts to the point: they can't take MB back.
Mensah storms through and gives Gurathin the weapon she'd been carrying. He stashes it in the emergency kit(4) as Mensah goes to stand between MB and the hatch, which opens to reveal an augmented human in power armour. Mensah physically blocks the opening and says this is her "personal security consultant."
A crew member peered out from behind the suit and said, “Dr. Mensah, SecUnits are not allowed aboard armed transports, unless there are special circumstances. It’s … too dangerous.” Mensah said, “These are special circumstances.” Her voice was icy. Nobody moved. The ship’s secured feed activity went frantic for seven minutes that felt like thirty. (And the way I experience time, that’s a lot.) (Yes, I started some media in background.)(5)
Eventually, the ship's combat supervisor comms in, and says they require a bond to guarantee the safety of the ship from the SecUnit, as an unsecured deadly weapon. MB is angry that they're talking about it that way.(6) It tells Mensah in the feed that it can take over the ship and the SecSystem, they don't have to pay the bond. Some of its desire to get vengeance on the company for treating it like a thing for so long leaks through, and Mensah turns, grips the collar of its jacket, and says "No."
Everyone goes quiet. MB realizes it needs to see Mensah's face for itself, so it stops looking through the cameras, and turns its head down to her. She's angry and tired beyond tired, just the way it feels. It tells her in the feed that she has no idea what it is. She responds that she knows it's scared, and hurt, and needs to calm down so they can get through this alive. It says it is calm, and needs to be, to take over a gunship.
Mensah’s eyes narrowed. Security consultants don’t get their clients into unnecessary pitched battles for control of their rescue ship. She added, Because that would be stupid. She wasn’t afraid of me. And it hit me that I didn’t want that to change. She had just been through a traumatic experience, and I was making it worse. Something was overwhelming me, and it wasn’t the familiar wave of not-caring.(7) Fine, I sent. I sounded sulky, because I was sulky.
Aloud, Mensah says good, and asks Pin-Lee if they have the money for the absurd bond. She waves hard currency cards, and says if that's not enough, she can transmit an authorization. Mensah turns around, and the crew, having just watched her face down a rogue SecUnit, in person, stare. Mensah says, since they're bonded clients, can they now come aboard to settle the bill?
There was a hesitation, then the comm said, “Please come aboard, Dr. Mensah.”(8)
Murderbot's first action in the passenger seating area they're led to is to sit on the bench, an action heretofore forbidden to it on company property. The humans don't notice, but it feels good.(9) The ship's crew are outside the compartment. MB confirms it has access to the SecSystem, no matter what the humans believe. It hears one of the ship crew say SecUnits really do look human out of their armour, and MB makes an obscene gesture in their direction. Gurathin makes a choked noise when he sees it.(10)
Mensah finishes looking over the agreement and gives it her okay, then walks over to MB, and says quietly that she's furious with it. Ratthi tries to excuse himself, far more afraid of Mensah's ire than he ever was of MB.
MB, on the other hand, tells Mensah she should sit down and tell the crew she needs "the MedSystem's Retrieved Client Trauma Evaluation protocol", at which point Gurathin interrupts to agree, followed by Ratthi and Pin-Lee. Mensah, however, refuses to be distracted and says MB stayed behind knowing it would be killed. MB protests, they wouldn't let it through, it told PortSec to let Mensah through and it would stay. She asks if that's really why it stayed.
I could have lied. I didn’t want to. “Mostly,” I said. I looked at her with my actual eyes again. “I wanted to win.” Ratthi, Gurathin, and Pin-Lee all watched me. The company crew incompetently pretended not to try to eavesdrop. Dr. Mensah’s expression softened, just around the edges. Ratthi said, “Why did you come through, then, when Gurathin got the barrier open?” “Because that last one was a Combat SecUnit and it was going to tear me apart. That’s not winning.” I wish I knew what winning was.(11) And once I started telling the truth, it was hard to stop. “I don’t want to be here.”
Pin-Lee sits next to Ratthi and says one wormhole jump, then they rendezvous with a Preservation ship and head back. She doesn't like this ship either. MB asks what's next after that. Mensah says they need to talk about that, once they're not being recorded.
Unfortunately, that's as far as she gets before MB's entire attention is drawn by the bot pilot. The hostile ship was still tracking, and the SecSystem just deflected a connection attempt, but… too late, MB realizes they sent an attack on the feed. It tells them, and cuts Mensah's implant and puts a wall on Gurathin's internal augments, as Pin-Lee and Ratthi remove their interfaces from their ears.
MB starts throwing walls over any humans it sees who fall victim to what's going on, since SecSystem is busy fighting it. Palisade must have obtained a set of override codes, like the ones MB used on the drones at Milu and TRH. Once connected, they sent something that makes the ship try to kill the humans aboard.
Switching between them and us pronoun sets,(12) MB describes the events occurring across the ship, figures out how it might help. It takes over the ship, the way Art took over it and the bot pilots at RaviHyral, even though it doesn't have Art's mental capacity.(13) Murderbot becomes the ship, and tries to figure out how to contain it, and further, why GrayCris is doing it this way.
It reactivates its body, and asks Mensah why she thinks GrayCris might be doing this. A crew member suggests MB is taking over, but Mensah tells them to shut up, and tells MB they think it's got the information from Milu, and want it destroyed. MB wonders if it might have to do with the memory clip it stole from Wilken and Gerth, as well, with their records of employment.
MB tells them to go manually disengage the shuttle they came in, and when they agree, it shuts its body down again, and becomes the ship. It didn't make a copy of the data from Milu, but it still has some of it in its compressed memory. Enough, perhaps, to look like a honeypot. It fakes copying the data into the shuttle to make an escape. The attacking code transfers itself to the shuttle.
Three things happened at once: (1) ShuttleSecSystem walled the shuttle’s comm system. (2) Bot pilot deleted its own comm system codes and I overloaded and fused its hardware. (3) My body told Dr. Mensah and Pin-Lee, “Now.”
The humans disengage the shuttle, isolating the attacking code. The gunship's systems start to reassert themselves, and the bot pilot confirms with the captain to fire and destroy the shuttle.
Murderbot pulls its code, its personality, back together and into its body. It feels odd, but manages to tell Mensah and Pin-Lee they're clear. As the humans start celebrating, though…
I felt weird. Very weird. Very bad. Performance reliability at 45 percent and dropping. Catastrophic failure— I felt my body crumple, but I didn’t feel myself hit the deck.
=====
(1) I'm genuinely surprised it took me this long to find so explicit a Star Trek reference. Either I'm off my game, or Wells had far more self-control than I would. (2) I'm not suggesting we should all endeavour to be Ratthi, but I do think we could stand to help first and ask questions later more often as a society, or even as a planetwide species built on community and mutual aid. (Don't make me break out the amateur anthropology or we'll be here all day.) (3) See, I don't think Gurathin would've figured it out if he didn't also care, at least a little, about Murderbot. If nothing else, it might be in the same way MB cares about him: reluctantly, but firmly. They probably have a lot in common. (4) Is that where it came from initially, or just a convenient place to get it out of sight? This is a company shuttle, not a personal one, so it's not like they're likely to come back for it. (5) Never change, friend-shaped robo-pal. (6) MB has finally learned that it is a person, it is allowed to be a person, nobody should ever have prevented it from being a person, and who can blame it for not wanting to go back? For wanting a little revenge? (7) One might even guess that it's entirely the opposite of not caring. Maybe caring almost too much to be able to acknowledge. (8) This line can be read so many different ways. Are they being pleasant? Are they being gruff? Is it a suggestion that they get the bond to cover liability ASAP, or an attempt not to antagonize clients? And how the reader, how you or I interpret this line affects the whole tone of the scene. (9) When small rebellion is all you can get, you take it. (10) See, SEE, nobody else notices, but Gurathin is paying attention, and laughing at MB's… well it's not a joke per se, but its actions that deserve a solidarity chuckle. (11) Sometimes winning is survival, but it's hard to see it that way. (12) At least, that's how I'm reading the sequence. MB not quite able to disengage itself from the "us" of it, either out of habit or out of the empathy it's built since it started learning how to person, or both. (13) This is where I start to Feel Things, knowing the end of the chapter, and the end of the book.

Thinking about Kate planning on working remotely from an apartment filled with cameras, did she discuss anything with the producers about a workspace without cameras or certain camera angles to protect against the possibility of any of her work being on camera? I’m assuming her work isn’t as sensitive as it is in the show, but even if it’s not, Whistler in any universe doesn’t strike me as someone who takes needless risks regarding security. It’s also possible that I’m overthinking this since I recently saw an article about a man who was being charged with insider trading because he eavesdropped on his wife’s work call and took advantage of what he learned.
you guys i have SO MANY asks about this *laugh crying emoji* this and the carbon monoxide detector are definitely the things i have the most asks about in the history of me being on tumblr??? i am obsessed with you all, this is so funny!!!
to answer, buddy, do you really think Katherine Whistler, she of the secrets and promotions and DIA tight-fisted obsessiveness, would be out here sending unsecure emails on camera??? sure she doesn't know shit about emotional intelligence but girl is great with military intelligence. she's got this!

I remember years ago when I got an iPhone for the first time (2012..?) there was this app in the App Store that would let you look at basically every single unsecured cctv in the world whenever you wanted. It would provide you with a randomized grid of cameras you could scroll through but you could also search for certain locations/countries. 13-14 y/o me thought it was neat and used it to watch sunsets in Hawaii or find historical landmarks via street cams in Europe. but often times you could just straight up look in peoples houses, offices, or stores. Indoor cameras were often just convenience stores or something but occasionally I would scroll past someone’s yard or living room.
Like if someone had a nanny cam I guess and they didn’t set up a password or whatever then I could just watch people in their nursery. It was soooo creepy and I avoided that kind of stuff but it makes me wonder how people discovered you can even do that and also why. Thankfully I think the app is no longer on the App Store but jeez it was a wild ride

Of all the beasts affected by man's progression and development of the land, it should be obvious that the fate of the Hidebehind was one we did not see. As a species famous for hiding from sight, even under impossible circumstances, how could we know what befell them as urbanization and fragmentation consumed the continent? We knew they existed, the olden tales made sure of that, but in what numbers and what health, we simply didn't know. As the trees turned to steel and the earth to asphalt, we wondered what became of them with many of their homes lost. Did they flee to wilder lands, hiding in parks and preserves? Did they perish as the trees they hid behind toppled down atop of them? It was hard to say. Obviously, a population count was impossible. You can't see what is determined to remain hidden. The successes in trapping them didn't help much either, as tagging them and tracking them simply didn't work. Any marks given to them vanished, and all equipment strapped or injected simply fell off. The dilemma always brought to mind the old tale of a man who caught a Hidebehind, and was determined to see its true form. The man took shears to its shaggy coat and shaved it down until he was somehow left with only a pile of fur, claws and branching horns. Perhaps we could not tag them because there was nothing to tag, a body so impossibly thin and fluid that it defied all known methods. Glimpses and sightings did give us an idea of their locations, and trail cams helped pinpoint a few roaming groups. All this, though, was a drop in the bucket compared to what we didn't know. Were these individuals just the few of the many we were able to see, or are they the last of their kind? A vanishing species now vanishing for good?
If there is one good thing to come from the increase in security systems and public monitoring, it is the fact that cameras in cities started to reveal the fate of the Hidebehinds. As we consumed their home forests, we assumed they fled to greener pastures. It seems now, though, that these phantoms clung to our own shadows and stood as witnesses as we constructed our own nests. Security cameras and paranoid neighborhoods would claim to see movements in shadows, or suspect some foul miscreant lurking in the night. At the time, most of these incidents were chalked up as people seeing criminals and hoodlums in every dark alley or poorly lit street. The media filled parents and homeowners with fear of the faceless stranger, of the unseen roaming gangs of thieves and murderers waiting patiently for an unlocked door or unsecured window. So when countless sightings and reports came in, no one thought much of it. Just another case of paranoia or overreaction to a new neighbor who didn't quite fit the suburban standard. After a few undeniable videos caught on security cameras, researchers scrambled to collect all these odd reports and comb through them. It then became clear that the Hidebehind had been amongst us this whole time, lurking in the alleys, street corners and backyards. Though their trees were gone, there were still plenty of places to hide, and they did so with the same masterful technique as always. Food was no worry for them, as they just followed the ways of the raccoon, crow and other urban pests. Trash cans and dumpsters were rummaged, unattended food items were swiped, and the victims of the ceaseless road gave them access to plenty of meat and intestines. It should have been obvious at that point, when people complimented road crews for their impeccable work of cleaning up roadkill. Somehow those messy carcasses disappeared overnight, yet no one gave thought on the fact no one saw a single truck come by to do it. As more footage has been compiled and strategic cameras have been placed, we have learned more of the Hidebehind's adaptations. They use the shadows made from streetlights to slink about. They have figured out motion sensors and know how to slip past these automatic lights, or how to use them as a distraction. Fences are godsends and attics are safe havens. They have learned of the stray animals that wander the streets, and the pets that foolish owners let roam free. It turns out coyotes aren't the only ones to blame when Mittens doesn't come home in the morning. Doggie doors let in more than just Fido, and every cracked open window has a chance of inviting someone else to your home. Researchers also claim that their adaptations aren't just behavioral, but physical as well. Pictures have shown that their furs have grown darker and blacker in color, to further cloak themselves in the shadows. It also appears that their branching horns are becoming shorter and less prominent, as they have fewer trees to blend in with. It seems like the Hidebehinds are doing just fine, moving right in with us and taking advantage of this new ecosystem we've created. Most people are less thrilled about this, but there is little they can do. How can you call an exterminator for something you can't even see?
Despite all that was learned, there was one question that still plagued the research community. We saw how the Hidebehinds hunted and traveled in our towns and cities, but what of their young? Where did they keep their pups as they lurked in the shadows of our civilization? Young Hidebehinds were once kept in the hollows of trees or in caves, waiting for mommy to come home with fresh entrails. Though they are pretty good at hiding at a young age, they are a bit clumsy, sloppy and a tad rambunctious. Even when mom says to sit still and wait, they tend to wander sometimes and get caught in some play. In the tranquil forest, this was no harm, as no beast could catch a Hidebehind pup, let alone even spot one. But in our jungles of concrete and steel, not every danger has eyes to see. Speeding cars, roaring construction equipment and the flowing sea of humanity provide plenty of threat to bumbling pups. No doubt they would be trampled or run down, even if the foe didn't see them in the first place. However, no such reports have come in, so the Hidebehinds must have found a safe haven for their young. Many assumed that the city provided plenty of crevices and holes for them to make nest, like dumpsters or abandoned buildings. Some suggested they moved to city parks and playgrounds, using the trees found there. Others believed they left the city and took their young to the outskirts, despite the grueling journey that would be for the tending mother. The theories were many, but none properly answered the question. Even so, no footage or pictures were coming out to prove any of them true. In such a surveillance state, surely a Hidebehind nest in a park or empty building would eventually be captured, right? But none were ever revealed, which left us all not knowing. Well, not exactly all of us. Though there was plenty of arguing and debate over the mystery of Hidebehind pups, there was one group who knew the answer quite well. Their claim was made quite early on, but no one paid them any mind. The answer was right there in front of everyone, but no one bothered to think twice on it. Throughout all this, this one group continued to champion their solution to this mystery, but we ignored them again and again. It was only until recently when a research team decided to test this preposterous theory and then shockingly find it to be true. One would say "who would have guessed," but there were plenty of folk who had already guessed long before this. It seems obvious now, but no one could have really imagined the Hidebehinds to be this crafty. After all, what beast would be so bold to place their young in such a location? What creature rears its pups in the nest of the ecosystem's apex?         The revelation of this fact has set the research community, and many households, ablaze with questions, worries and concerns. How did this happen? When did this happen? How come it took us so long to figure it out? These were the storm of demands that came from so many homes and parents. They make accusations now, of the scientists being stupid and oblivious, but before all this they were just as ignorant to the truth. They didn't listen at all when the theory was championed again and again. After all, what parent truly believes their child when they say there is a monster in the closet?

“Hidebehind”
"Wait a second, didn't you already draw a Hid-" INDEEDY DO! Yes, I have already drawn a Hidebehind and given it my usual ludicrous spin, but that was before I started doing this modern fearsome critter thing and the entry had nothing really to it. "So why not redraw the old des-" REDRAW?! IN THIS HOUSEHOLD!? Make the same thing twice you say?! Ludicrous! Preposterous! Unthinkable! To reuse a design, the gall! It has nothing to do with the fact that I struggle to draw the same thing twice, it is a matter of......uh.....ethics! Doing the same design again would mean I would have to give it a different pose, or show it from a different angle, or literally draw it in a way that I can't draw it! And we can't be having that here! So here is a new Hidebehind design with lore to match! I had to make this entry after I stumbled upon the revelation that boogiemen are just urbanized Hidebehinds.
