Unsupervised update finally released! Just finished playing heroic timemancer playthrough so here so of my thoughts:
â Shimmer is finally dealt with. I am so glad we couldn't do much about them in the original script but now you've got options.
â Deviants are integrated into the Adversary's plan. They're well written and given way more dialogs.
â Nora! You can have a duel with her and you can even set her on a redemption arc with the team.
â the Adversary is defeatable this time and Im happy about it.
I will try the villain route after I played with the other powers but so far Im liking it a lot.

DISCONTINUED
Previous

A week had passed after the dinner. You sat on the extravagant vanity in your room, Lily hovering over you as she tried to peek at what you were writing. Lucky for you, this worldâs language was different from your own, so whatever you scribbled just looked like random scribbles on a piece of paper.
Plan A - Avoid Marrying Nanami Kento
Plan B- Avoid Nanami Kento at all costs in your marriage.
You sighed, putting down the feather pen as the ink created little splotches of black on your desk, Lily immediately took a washcloth and wiped it. You could get used to being babied after, what you couldnât get used to was the lack of privacy that came with being a Countâs daughter.
Hell! Guards were posted outside your room and the windows, proving it very difficult for you to try and make a sudden escape. There were a bunch of documents all around you, the series of events that took place from present to your death and even after that considering the story didnât end after you passed away, after all you were just a cog in the machine to keep things going.
For now your main concern was how to get Nanami to break off your engagement before it took place. According to Lily, there were rumours that Nanami was looking for a wife that wasnât super influcnecial nor did he want kids, well considering the fact that your parents agreed immediately when they saw that he was a Duke, you couldnât blame Nanami for not searching harder.
Had he not heard of the rumours surrounding you? Horrible villainous tales of cruelty and viciousness. Exaggerated of course, but some were well deserved by the original body.
Another sigh escaped your lips as you rested your head on your forearms, blinking at the four poster bed in the corner of the room. You had asked Lily to change the hot pink room into something more mellow, more suited to your tastes and the staff had got it done in under a day.
You didnât have time to be dilly-dallying with your new life, not if you wanted to make it back to your original world. Ah, yes you had forgotten about that for a second- you had to go out and visit the black market and âwitchesâ if you wanted any chance or hope of getting back home safely.
So, you found yourself on the footsteps of a magical shop, one where they sold magical weapons and stones alike, powerful artifacts that could blow a persons head over with just the flick of your fingers.
You werenât allowed to leave the manor unsupervised or even alone for that matter, so Lily along with two knights accompanied you in your trip.
The original villainess hardly ever left her room other than to wreck chaos and attend parties that were forced upon her. The main reason for that being the complicated process of leaving the house. Apparently, it was not as simple as making up your mind and leaving the house.
As the Countsâ daughter, you had to first ask for permission from your step mother and then get it officially signed off by your father. Not only did you have to listen to that horrible womanâs ranting about every fault she could find writhing you and making cruel remarks about the state you were in, you also had to pretend the man who sat in front of you, separated by a wooden desk was your father and not just a random stranger you met .
The wooden handle of the door felt smooth under your touch, almost familiarly nostalgic in a weird way. You pushed it open to immediately be hit with the scent or herbs, sour and putrid, smoke filled the room, casting it in a blurry haze. You wheezed twice and Lily brought a handkerchief to your face, you covered your mouth and nose with it.
Squinting through the haze and parting through the fragile and old looking artifacts you finally made it to the counter, violet coloured curtain hiding what was behind the wooden table. A woman emerged through the curtain, offering you a glimpse of what was hidden behind. An array of stones and books strewn across a small coffee table, one more blink and your view was obstructed by the woman.
She was not much taller than you, mousy brown hair that was cut short to her neck, uncommon for the era you were currently living in. What was most intriguing about her was her deep red eyes, almost blood esque with her pupils basically swimming in them. She was wearing a long sleeved tight fitting lace dress, once again- uncommon for the current era.
âI was expecting you,â
She smiled, reaching her hand out to shake yours, purple stained lips opening into a tooth smile. Her canines were unaturally sharp, scarily so.
âOh- uh.. Itâs nice to meet you too..?â
You sounded unsure of yourself, who was the woman before you and how did she know that you would visit her.
âCome, letâs go to the back- and leave your maid and guard here. I donât think theyâll like to hear the truth of your,â
Her voice trailed off, leaning over the counter and whispering into your ear about the country you were born on- but back on earth. Your spine straightened up, shivers running down it as you ordered Lily and the guard to stay, immediately following the strange woman through the door.
She led you to the coffee table and you took a seat, looking around at the more oddly decorated room in fascination.
âItâs been a while since your soul has come,â
She set down a cup of tea for you, watching you with cat like eyes as you took just the tiniest sip, a Cheshire Cat grin greeting you over the rim of the cup,
âHow much do you know..?â
You set down the tea cup, thrumming your fingers against the ceramic glass as you watched her sip her own cup with less suspicion.
âI cannot tell you much, but you wish to go back yes?â
You nodded your head, Ofcourse you wanted to get out of this weird hell hole you found yourself in, no matter how tempting letting yourself be pampered and looked after sounded like. She set down her cup, flicking her finger and you watched with curiosity as the tea basically poured into the cup from thin air,
âYour soul⌠the goddess made a mistake in short,â
You raised an eyebrow,
âWhat do you mean, what nonsense are you spouting?â
She laughed, the sound striking your ears in an awful way. She was loud yet almost screechy, like a crow.
âAll I can say for now is you are where you belong. Stop fretting and what you want to know shall naturally come to you,â
With that and another flick of her fingers, you were behind the counter again. Lily stood up from where she was crouching on the floor,
âMy Lady! Are you okay? Did the weird woman do anything to you?â
You let Lily fret over you, Evory- the witch was waving behind the curtains at you.
How did you know her name what-
Your head felt dizzy, light almost and you clutched it, wincing in pain as you asked Lily to take you back to the Manor.
A few weeks had passed since you visited the witch and you felt like you were slowly rotting away in your room, it wasnât the ball season yet so that meant you had no social interaction other than Lily and your family. Your brothers stayed out of your way for the most part, shooting you condescending looks whenever you did cross paths with them.
The only thing that was keeping you from going insane was your powers. Though the original villainess barely had any, after tripping in the garden one day you found that you could heal yourself. The wound which was red and splotchy had fully healed itself, a bright white light covering the skin on your shin and the pain disappeared in a flash.
Ofcourse you didnât bother telling any of your family members, your stepmother had removed all traces of your birth mother and your father was always out in business. You doubted the current Lady of the Manor would use this information for anything other than her advantage- or worse sell you off to another man.
You shortly considered becoming a member of the church, or atleast working in a hospital like your mother and the women of your family had previously done. Unfortunately, the matriarchs of the family usually had to send a recommendation letter as well as train you personally under their care- both of which were impossible for you since your mother had passed.
There really was no option for you other than to get married for now and that too to a man who was going to end your life. The engagement was set to the first week of the balls, merely two weeks away. Since Nanami was a Duke as well as a former Prince, his engagement would be announced to the entire courts. No doubt a power play marrying him to the infamous Tyrannical Princess- apparently something the original Villainess was known by.
You could do nothing but wallow in your misery as you try to come up with plans to avoid both the heroine and your death flags.

The Traineeâs workplace authenticity

One of my favorite things about workplace TV shows is when the characters actually do work. AND when the details of such work are not only relatively accurate, but also essential to how the characters relate to themselves, the world and each other. So far, "The Trainee" is giving that to me in the first two episodes.
Having interned/been an assistant at a TV production company and later moving to entertainment journalism and managing interns/junior writers there, I can appreciate both Ryan's and Jane's POVs. Here's what I liked so far:
Good Pick's pink tube slide and movie theater seats in the lobby - A lot of these entertainment-adjacent companies take a cue from Silicon Valley and have this frivolous, frat-boy design aesthetic -- bean bag chairs, foosball tables, etc. I worked in an office that had a ping-pong table. The idea is to make it fun enough that people want to stay in the office and work longer, which isn't really all that great. You stop seeing that fun stuff after a while and just want to get home. That said, I'd love to work in a company with a fire pole in it, but that would be too much of a liability.
Ryan's fluke hiring - Baimon totally hearing what he wants to hear from Ryan in that sham interview is hilarious but sadly not all that unusual. What sucks is that this is unfair to the manager who then must work with the unqualified person, and unfair to that person hired also, who isn't the best fit for the position. I've been the person saddled by the unfortunate hire and have had to make do ⌠and sometimes you can figure it out, but often you're left doing extra work to make up for their deficits. If it's just an intern, no problem -- they'll be gone in a few months. I felt Jane's pain!
Ryan's uncertainty & silence - That said, Ryan clearly wants to do well but is out of his depth since this was not even what he was learning in school. I remember the first day as a journalist for a small company where I kind of was on my own, and nobody told me what to do. I was like, "WTF??" Part of you doesn't want to ask questions lest you expose your imposter identity, but you're also wondering just how long you can do nothing before someone notices.
The printer always breaks down -- always. You get pretty good at troubleshooting everything until resorting to calling a technician

Jane's prickly demeanor - The fact is that in any company, people who are competent can move up, but that doesn't automatically infuse them with good managerial skills. I think workshops, etc. are a must for anyone who gets promoted and suddenly have people reporting to them. Everyone can get frustrated when they're overwhelmed, so I do have some sympathy for Jane. He does have one skill that I think is essential to be a good manager: identifying and acknowledging the strengths of an employee. It really makes all the difference that he finally sees Ryan as an asset, not a hindrance.
Ryan's skills aren't that bad at all - As soon as Ryan tells his family that he's no help to anyone at work, he immediately shows five different ways how much he's relied on by his family. Yes, people who are competent, reliable and can anticipate needs (like how his sister needs to be reminded to charge the battery after using the camera) will be able to apply those skills to other situations and can go far. Ryan just needs to familiarize himself with the industry first in order to know how he can fill in the gaps. (I believe in being able to change careers and taking big pivots in life.)

The interns banding together - OMG I remember sometimes just being unsupervised while trying to get a project together, and there is a strange bond you have being the youngest and least experienced. And you do have the most stupid conversations.
Being one cog in a bigger machine - I really appreciate how they show all the different departments that have to come together to make one project work -- especially when last-minute changes need to be implemented or a persnickety client has opinions. You complain, you worry, you put in extra late hours and have to make 11th-hour fixes -- but it's so satisfying to see it all come together. Shit goes down, and you fix it.
Hiring extras - The hiring of extras at Good Pick was different from what I've experienced. I actually have been an extra, and what I'm used to is being part of a company or agency that has you in their database, and then you get picked or cast by that company and sent to your gig. But that's in Hollywood and for TV shows & movies. It's probably different for ad houses or in Thailand, but I did like how they showed that it is still a casting process. There are deliberate decisions made, and certain looks sought out. I thought it was hilarious that Ryan's first thought for hiring the salaryman was to get an uncle from the same restaurant as the auntie. If he had his way, everyone in that restaurant would be hired for some gig or another.

Ryan getting scammed by the extra - I was screaming at Ryan as soon as he offered to pay that scammer extra. Just ⌠no, boy. You had to have known that was shady. BUT despite being duped, he was willing to think on his feet and try to solve a problem by being proactive, and that does happen. And so do mistakes. He just needs to calibrate his radar for what is OK. (I'm glad Jane saw that.) Ryan is lucky that it only cost him 1,000 baht for that lesson.
Extras must be on hand and wait - OK this is a scene in the preview for Episode 3, but I was so happy to see it: Extras in Hollywood actually cannot just spend 5 minutes or whatever to do their job, even if that's how much you see them onscreen. There's a ton of hurry up and wait on film sets, and so extras have to stay in Holding -- usually just a designated area with some chairs (sometimes you get tables) -- until you're needed. And production schedules never run on time, so it can be hours or even days. You're lucky if you're there long enough to get a meal, if the temperature is nice, if you're able to make friends with the others and if there's wifi. Sometimes you bring your own clothes for wardrobe based on what you're told, and sometimes the wardrobe department supplements your wardrobe with extra pieces to help complete a specific look. And yeah, you're not able to leave except for the bathroom, so Ryan definitely shouldn't have let that one extra wander off.
"Ryan After Work" - I like these post-credit sequences that give extra insights into the job. And while the first one was more instructional, explaining how the production house differed from an agency, the second was more about the cohort camaraderie (and hinting at Ryan's positive feelings toward Jane). I hope the romance aspect of the show doesn't overshadow the work specificity going forward!

A bit of rambling and a request for specific feedback:
I recently tried CoG's latest 'Unsupervised', and just didn't vibe with it. And I can pinpoint why now: While the plot's fine, it's the tone that rubbed me wrong.
I'm no fan of stories with this (rather juvenile) 'lol relatable' tone that commonly strikes me as condescending. I forgot what the exact word is, but it's the tone of backhanded compliments, of simply talking down to someone while insisting you're their friend and on their side etc.
Don't like it.
But now I am worried that I'm unintentionally do what I hate.
Ballad and CuCu can be rather tongue in cheek at times, and I'd like to know if you ever felt as if the story is not taking you serious as a person, as if it's talking down to you or even mocking you.

I run into this problem frequently when changing jobs. I learn quickly, work efficiently and consistently. People are quick to take advantage of this, giving me ever increasingly difficult tasks and holding me to higher standards than my coworkers.
What they don't understand is that I'm not doing it because I care or have a drive to succeed in the company. I do it because I hate work, so I shut my brain completely off while I do it. Everything I do is automated. And the second you pull me out of that automated head space to tell me I'm doing a great job, give me employee of the month, or some other pointless accolade they only tune me into the reality that I'm unintentionally raising the bar.
Now I have to slack off to push that bar back down and temper expectations because I know im now on the path to becoming the reliable workhorse that gets rewarded with more responsibilities for the same pay as the lazy guy who is not productive and can hardly be relied on to show up to work let alone do his job.
Slacking off and slowing down takes a lot more effort for me than just doing the job. It requires me to be mentally present and aware of how fast I'm doing things so I can regulate my pace. If I'm aware I'm at work, I'm miserable. Wich translates to, "fuck this place, time to find a new job."
This is why I gravitate to employers who leave me alone. This is why I pursue solo, unsupervised work on the road. This is why I love being a trucker. No bosses around to ruin my emersion and remind me of my role as a cog in the machine.

âThe general idea of being a âbossâ is running a big company, doling out instructions, and collecting results, but this is far from the truth. The job comes with many genuine, emotional, and interpersonal interactions.
The staff members at your firm arenât just cogs in your moneyâmaking machine; their wellâbeing â mental, physical, and emotional â should also be of concern. Being a boss is about managing a company and its constituent members.â
âGuidance refers to the interaction between the boss and the employee postâperformance or, simply put, feedback. A leader can provide feedback in two forms â praise and criticism. This part of leadership is delicate because there might be adverse responses to the feedback. The trick is to balance both types of feedback to achieve positive reactions and boost workersâ performance.â
Managing people is a challenging task because people are different, and one trick wonât work for all; this is where being a good boss comes in handy. ~ Kim Scott
âThings can only worsen if you stray a little further from obnoxious aggression and find yourself in manipulative insincerity, for example, emotional manipulation and coercion without regard for the personâs emotions. You might think you are showing that you care by withholding harsh, honest opinions, but youâd tell the truth if you did care; you are simply telling someone theyâre great when theyâre not just so they can like you. False praise and reserving criticism will only destroy the business youâre trying to protect.â
âLastly, ruinous empathy, an offshoot of manipulative insincerity, happens when bosses have a hard time criticizing underperformance but condone and encourage it instead. This behavior is the mark of ruin for a company because it prioritizes being nice over being direct, hence guaranteeing poor performances. Your desire to be liked or seen as nice is unhealthy and, unlike radical candor, will ensure that trust has eroded and the staff is comfortable being lazy.â
Radical candor ensures that you remain a valuable guide for workers, an inspiration to improve, and a boost toward positive results. ~ Kim Scott
You can gauge a personâs performance and ambitions when they feel free enough to communicate them to you. ~ Kim Scott
âWhen your rockstars perform well, recognize and reward their efforts but donât promote them to a new role or challenge right away. Youâll only cause them to crash fast.
If you treat your superstars as rockstars, who continue to roll out new work unsupervised, youâll only have poor results. Superstars will not improve or really do much if they donât feel challenged. So, switch it up for them after a big triumph or failure. They wonât shy away from new roles; they need just that kind of opportunity to shine.
Don't neglect the âmiddle;â they need your guidance too so that they won't feel left out or mediocre. The middle has a rhythm, and it is your role to find it. And lastly, donât be afraid to let go of the perpetual underperformers but make sure that before you do this, you have been radically candid with them, offered guidance, and tried to readjust their focus and roles.â
Your team must be part of the decisionâmaking process, or you risk setting up an autocratic system where the staff will feel left out and displeased. ~ Kim Scott
âEach team member has a unique drive, that special thing that inspires them, and it is your job to identify and use it to the advantage of you both. You can pinpoint that drive by using the threeâquestion style. Then categorize their life story, dreams, and shortâterm goals into temporary boxes to project a tailored growth path to help them reach their goals.â
âReward topâperformers â rockstars and superstars â accordingly. Be fair in your appraisal of tasks completed. Create a solid recruitment process; outline a detailed job description that aligns with what you want in an employee to avoid hiring misfits. Never be too scared to let go of people who are stuck and continue to underperform. But when you do so, never do it with contempt, and ensure that you set up a followâup to ensure that they can find new opportunities.â
âKim Scott details a few guidelines to achieve a perfect resultâmaking environment.
⢠Oneâtoâone conversations are the bossâ way to know whatâs really going on with individual team members regarding their successes and struggles.
⢠Staff meetings are avenues to review previous work, appraise the current efforts, proffer updates, and establish techniques for the coming future.
⢠Think time and take regular breaks from the thoughts about others.
⢠âBig debateâ meetings allow the team to amicably debate without malice and with the mindset of a unified goal at the end.
⢠âBig decisionâ meetings create an avenue for the team to chip in with decisions that will affect the whole firm.
⢠Allâhands meetings make you enlist the ENTIRE team into the process, persuading the nonâbelievers to join the wave.
⢠Kanban is a system where the staff fills in work to be done, work in progress, and work done on a display board where everyone can observe the process.
⢠Walk around; find time to learn from and solve minor problems as you attempt to tackle major ones.
⢠Being conscious of culture â the attitude and mindset prevalent in the company â will go a long way to either making or marring the companyâs success trajectory. If the staff is accustomed to slacking, theyâll continue to sink lucrative ideas.â
âIt involves a lot of honesty, openness, intentional caring, mentoring, guiding, and motivating. It takes much more than a degree from business school, but an actual decision to be a better person and an even better âmanager.â
Radical candor is a technique that allows you to combine the most effective methods of communication with the employees to make your work environment more positive and growthâencouraging. Your workers have different backgrounds and experiences, requiring you to find a unique approach to each of them. Be a person who is sincerely concerned about a workerâs performance, satisfaction with their job, and their opinions on different topics. Make sure that you know whether your employees are stressed or not because emotional tension negatively affects everyoneâs performance.
It is difficult to maintain professionalism when filled with negative feelings. So, you should set up regular meetings where you can talk face to face with every person to know how your workers feel. Allow an employee to feel safe with you, and they will open up. The work environment will become a place where the workers have a chance to be themselves as in real life.
However, donât forget about yourself while taking care of others. You donât want to experience emotional exhaustion caused by neglect of your needs. Always take some time during the day to think about yourself. Concentrate on your sensations â do you feel tense, frustrated, happy, irritated, inspired? Try to find out the reasons for these emotions because it will help you handle the situations better in the future.
Try this
The next time you are having issues with a member of your team, remember that different types of motivation work for different workers. Take some time to figure out the best method of motivation for each worker and watch them thrive.â

Seat 21 - Chapter 7
A/N: As promised, more mass update!
Ever faithful to his word, Mic sensei does come back.Â
His flyaways are completely out of control now; static raising his hair.Â
âWhy hello miss Hinode!â A bright voice chirps from below. My eyes follow the sound, stopping by Mic senseiâs shin. Principal Nezu grins up, beady eyes shining.
âWould you mind letting us in? I have some things weâd like to discuss.â Before I can so much as answer, the small rodent squeezes through the opening of the door. With an apologetic smile, Mic sensei holds the door wider; nodding at me to follow the principal.
Nezu strolls through the apartment without care; hopping up into the musty armchair thats older than I am.Â
âMiss Hinode, it has come to my attention that you are living here unsupervised, yes?â Beady eyes are trained on my face.
Hesitantly, I nod.
âAnd you are aware that a minor living their own violates the national child protection order?â The words are so nonchalant; but make me freeze nonetheless.
âWe canât have any students breaking the law, Miss Hinode.â Principal Nezu tuts.
My blood runs cold.
Please donât expel me. My hands tremble, temples stinging.
âWell, thatâs certainly an option.â The rodent muses.
âYou could move back home, but I understand that you would then have trouble with your commute. Yes?â A chaste nod is all I can manage.
âThe third option, is you find another place to live - with guardians of some sort. Usually we would offer group homes or government foster families. But Present Mic seems to think that in an,, unfair decision.â My eyes shoot up to my sensei.
A half smile, guilt ridden to say the least.
âThat is why he kindly offered up his home and guardianship to you. We have already spoken with your father, and he has approved this decision if you should proceed.â Nezu explains.
My father? I ask.
âYour ma, uh, didnât pick up kiddo.â Present Mic whispers.
Oh.
I wish I could say I was surprised.
âItâs up to you kiddo,â Itâs almost amusing how short Mic sensei is as he crouches down. Someone so tall looks odd looking up at me.
âBut, if you decide to stay with me, I promise to look after ya the best I can.â The solemnity of his voice scares me.
Suddenly, Iâm eight again; looking out on an audience of hundreds. Unable to say anything, no matter how badly I want to.
Itâs times like this I feel how heavy the pearls are on my ears.Â
But, Mic sensei is kind.
He is patient.
He saw how scared I was yesterday, and came to visit me today.
My instincts scream against me.
Donât go. Donât trust. Never trust. Alone is safer than together.
But, I want to be a hero. Mic sensei can help me. Heâs a prohero, its his job to look after people.
He was a prohero too. So was she. Now look at them.
What, I start. Is your home like?
âWell kiddo. I live in an apartment with my husband, and our three cats.â Mic sensei explains softly.
Husband? Alarm bells ring. Not safe.Â
What does he think? Hesitancy slows my hands.
âWell, Shou has abit of a soft spot for you. So Iâm sure he wonât mind.â He shrugs.
Shou? Cogs start turning; surely not.
âYeah, âzawa loves you kids. But he worries about you.â The blond muses, confirming my suspicions.
Aizawa sensei.
He promised he would be careful.
He let me stay.
Heâs giving me a third chance.
Okay. If youâre sure. I sign.
âWonderful!â Nezu claps, my entire body jerking in response. Climbing down from the couch, the rodent rests a paw on my teacherâs knee.
âIâll go and start the paperwork, you and Miss Hinode can start packing.â Though he doesnât smile, Nezuâs beady eyes glint as he happily strolls through the front door.
I swear I can hear him humming.
I deflate, held breath leaving me. Mic senseiâs own sigh echoes.Â
âAlright, itâs getting late so weâll just grab the essentials tonight; âkay kiddo?â He asks, tone gentle as ever.
Ok.
Rushing to my room, I grab exactly that - the essentials. My uniform, pyjamas, toiletries and the like.
Itâs always shocking - how an entire life can pack away into just a few bags. I give myself a pat down, checking that I have everything.
Phone? Yes.
Wallet? Yes.
Keys? Yes.
Mask?
Shit.
My fingers graze my lips, rather than the cotton that should be there. My mind spins, trying to think of where it could possibly be. I sift through my memories, before landing on the incriminating moment.
The shipwreck zone, in the water.Â
I ripped off my mask to call for Asui.
Itâs gone.
Annoyance surges through my body, my lips pursing together.Â
If I was home, on my own, this wouldnât be a problem. I could see where buy some more fabric nearby, and have a new one stitched up by tomorrow.
But I canât. I was given the choice to continue living alone, or continue my hero studies and I chose the latter. Mic-sensei has been kind enough to offer me a place to stay and I thank him by putting him and Aizawa sensei in danger.
Maybe All Might was right.
I am dangerous.Â
A hand gently placed on my shoulder. My body jerks, twisting around at alert.
âWhatâs with the scowl, kiddo?â Present Mic senseiâs voice is patient. Kind. Too kind to be in such danger.
I clamp my teeth down onto my tongue, fangs piercing.
My mask, I lost it in the battle yesterday. I explain.
âStill feeling sick?â Thereâs an undercurrent of concern to his voice. âMaybe we should get you into a doctor.â
I shake my head.
For my voice. So I donât accidentally use my quirk and hurt people. My hands fly frantically, and it surprises me that my sensei keeps up.Â
âFor your quirk?â The man tilts his head slightly. âSeems like overkill, kiddo.â
Liquid metal fills my mouth.
Is not. I argue, earning only a shrug in response.
âOkay, if youâre sure. Iâll pick up a pack when I do the groceries tomorrow.â Mic sensei concedes, obviously not understanding the looming danger.
Thanks, I sign curtly, scared that even my visual words will harm him.
âOther than that, you ready to go kiddo?â He asks, nodding towards the door. âCarâs still out front and ready to go.â
I nod again, trying to avoid words. A grin breaks out on my teacherâs face.
âThen letâs go!â His voice is back to that familiar cheer, slightly soothing my anxiety.
I duck under his leather-clad arm as Mic-sensei holds the door open for me. A jingle of the knob confirms that its locked, as he steps out beside me.
Following him down the apartment stairs, I keep as silent as possible.
I keep that same silence as I slide into the passenger seat of Mic senseiâs black SUV.Â
My silence stays as we pull up outside a new apartment complex; one that looks significantly fancier than the one we just came from.
It stays silent, right up until the door to my senseiâs apartment opens.Â
A series of frantic meows greets us.
A long haired tabby rolls over upon seeing us, purring into the polished floor. It blinks itâs large yellow eyes at me.
My breath hitches; heart stinging.
âThatâs Kitaro,â Mic starts, not even looking up to identify the cat as he locks the door behind us.
âHeâs an attention whore,â He continues. Laughter builds in my chest, threatening to bubble over.Â
Taking a deep breath, I successfully suppress it; but I canât stop the smile from forming on my face.
ââZashi? That you?â A pained groan echoes through the house. The voice sends flashes through my mind.
Careful. Careful. A toothy grin within a beak. Blood rushing down my senseiâs face.
âYeah babe, itâs me.â Mic-sensei calls out from behind me.
âBe right back, kiddo. Iâm just gonna go let Sho know whatâs going on.â He explains, walking past me. Sheer guilt shoots through my heart.
I forgot Aizawa sensei didnât know I was coming.
Standing awkwardly in the doorway, I hear voices murmur from what I assume is their bedroom.Â
Kitaro rolls over, stretching as he steps up. With another needy meow, he bumps into my leg firmly. Bringing my hand to meet his head, a warm rumble shakes the catâs entire body. My heartbeat slows with each purr.Â
âKiddo? Sho wants to talk.â Micâs voice echoes down the hall.
Just like that, fear grips my heart again. I feel it pounding in my eardrums, making my footsteps inaudible.
My blond sensei stands in a doorway, a concerned smile.
âNow kid, heâs okay, but donât be shocked. He did only come home from the hospital at lunch.â He explains gently, a hand on my shoulder.Â
Mic-sensei steps aside, and tears immediately well in my eyes.
The only recognisable feature that I can see is the familiar black hair. Everything else, from head to toe, is covered in a thick layer of bandages.
âHinode?â The lump of bandages speaks into the room, not moving from its spot in the large bed.
âSheâs here, Sho.â Mic confirms quietly.
âMic told me you were living on your own, is that true?â The fatigue is evident in Aizawa-senseiâs voice, moreso than ever.Â
I nod, Mic sensei leaning over to whisper in my ear.
âHe canât see you through the bandages. Youâre gonna have to speak, kiddo.â I could slap myself upside the head with the obvious realisation.
âIâm not going to make you talk, Hinode. But I still expect answers to my questions.â The bandages grumble. An arm sneaks out from under the duvet, resting near the side of the bed.
âJust sign on my hand, itâll take me a second to get it though.â The arm is bandaged just as heavily as the rest of him, but I rest my hands in his palm nonetheless.
Yes, sensei. I spell carefully.
âSo you were living alone? At fifteen?â The judgment in my teacherâs voice is clear as day.
Yes. I admit. A tired sigh.
âDo you know how ridiculous that is?â The scolding is gentle, almost, concerned.
Yes, I do. Embarrassment eats me alive.
âThereâs going to be some rules here, okay?â Aizawa senseiâs voice is getting raspier by the minute.
Of course. I sign. Thank you Aizawa sensei.
âAt home, you call us Aizawa and Yamada. Weâre not your senseis here, weâre your guardians.â He starts, and my eyes widen. I turn to question this with Mic-sensei, only to get a pointed look in return.
Ok. Hesitantly, I agree.
âDonât go telling all the other kids that âZashi and I are married, either. I hate dealing with pointless gossip.â Aizawaâs lecturing is the most familiarity Iâve experienced since entering the apartment.
I nod my hand in his palm.
âKeep your room clean, help with chores. Keep doing your best at school. Saturdays are movie nights, feel free to join if you so wish.â Thereâs a finality to the last sentence.Â
âIâm going back to sleep, I donât care what you two pick out for dinner.â He addresses both of us now, retracting his arm back into the bed.Â
âOkay, sleep well babe. Lemme know if you need anything.â Mic-sensei, no, Yamada, moves some hair out of his husbandâs bandaged face fondly. Then, he turns to me.
âLet's get you set up, kiddo.â He smiles.
