I swear this didn’t come to mind just because I started watching the Bridgerton prequel series last weekend, haha, but the Venus transit, the phenomenon of Venus passing between the Earth and the Sun, has been key in determining the  distance between Earth and the Sun. Before the 18th century, Kepler’s laws had given an idea of the relative scales within the solar system, but actual distances were very hard to measure. However, astronomers realised they would be able to derive the Earth-Sun distance (the “astronomical unit”, au) if they had measurements of the duration of the transit from different places across the globe. I won’t go into the maths, but the idea is that Venus crosses a different part of the Sun if seen from different locations. With some trigonometry (simplified example here, since it has images that explain this better than words can), distances can be calculated.

In order to get these measurements, entire expeditions were coordinated in the 17th and 18th century! They eventually ended up with a value that was only about 3% off from the value we know it to be today, which is pretty impressive.

While I love this answer for Gabi, nothing really came to mind at first, other than the obvious rings. But then I started thinking about planetary migration, which is very cool. There’s this theory called the Grand tack hypothesis that says Jupiter formed a lot closer to the Sun than where it is now. It then started moving even closer to the Sun, until it got caught into a gravitational resonance with Saturn, and both migrated farther out, eventually ending up in their current positions.

Neptune is interesting, because it wasn’t discovered as a planet by observations like the other major planets, but through a comparison between models and real-life measurements of the orbit of Uranus. A discrepancy between the two was found, which was postulated to be cause by the gravitational influence of another planet: Neptune. Indeed, some years later, Neptune was “discovered”. I say “discovered”, because the planet had already been observed several centuries before by Galileo Galilei, but he thought it was a star. The thing I like about this is how it shows how theories and observations can complement each other!

Thank you to everyone who has been very patient with me. So! I wanted to give you all some updates and stuff to look forward to because oh god it sure has been an entire fucking year since I uploaded stuff and I refuse to feel bad about it but my brain is trying so hard to make me! I am working on chapter 2. Progress has been terribly slow because of severe life events, thank you for your understanding.

So!! What's next? Well, over the summer I am really fucking hoping to finish chapter 2. I know I keep saying this but literally i stg. I'm going apeshit. do you know how hard it is to think about something for an entire year and never have the time, motivation, or energy at the same time to make it exist?? fucked up!! Before that though, I have a few things.

I TOLD you all that I would talk about an AU of mine, whichever was highest voted in that strawpoll I did, and then surprise i fuckin didnt do that. I would very very much like to do that! The problem, I realized, is that I operate super hard on a reactionary basis so I am not prone to talking about anything that is mine until prompted about it or given permission. Fucking, Wack. This is my house. I should be cringe and free but nooooo. Anyways, because of this, I am planning on doing 2 things -> Actually tell you guys about spirit keeper! You all voted for him back when, and especially with that ✨Fucking, Gorgeous✨ commission from Fronomeeps I got (for me birthday :]) I really really really want to do that. And post my art more. and shit like that. seriously i need to get out of my head or I'll explode. someone needs to scream about how cool these stories are with me or I'll dissolve. -> I am thinking of doing a day long event where I stream an Aggie/(Magma?) where I draw my AUs and let people hop in to join in (as long as it stays on topic!) as well as answering as many asks as I can about my many aus and basically setting you guys up to trick me into infodumping. Because let me tell you i have a year and a halfs worth of words in my head and i am 100% confident ingo and emmet enjoyers would really like to hear them. So I wanna do a big ask party Q&A and really get things rolling!! okay i swear i’ve gone on about them at length on here before but i couldn’t find it 😔 curse tumblrs terrible search system etc etc that said !! i do have a space pirates tag on my blog for random posts that remind me of them so like. probably not everything will show up but a fair bit !! u can also find a bit more by just searching each of their names on my blog i think

SO my space pirates r cap tachi and maisie. i love them with my whole heart. they’re a polycule <3 cap’s aromantic bc i love projecting but they and tachi are dating in like a bffs sort of queerplatonic but almost romantic but not really and love each other sooooo so much way (also bc i love projecting)(although tbf i came up with their relationship before i myself had a relationship to project onto them. it’s still kind of projection tho).

they r also dating maisie but like the cap/tachi dynamic is. okay i’m gonna clarify first that this bit is NOT projection. anyway cap and tachi r suuuuuuuuuper codependent and like definitely pretty unhealthy but also it works for them. they don’t know how to live without each other and neither of them want to find out. they’re definitely the type to go on an absolute rampage if either of them got killed. tachi can do the most terrible shit in the world and cap will find a way to justify it. cap can do the most terrible shit in the world and tachi won’t justify it but he will forgive it. tachi is cap with fewer inhibitions. he’s loud and brash and impulsive where cap actively reigns those traits in in themself. cap also tends to be very stoic and doesn’t like admitting they have emotions. they take care of people that’s what they Do but they often do it to their own detriment. they’ll ignore their own needs if there’s someone that they perceive as needing their help.

tachi loves swords. it’s a bit sexual ngl. he also loves fighting people. he’s absolutely the first of the group to start a physical fight; cap prefers at least an attempt at diplomacy and maisie likes to sit back and watch things unfold. tachi is easily bored and tends to look for any type of excitement. he and maisie argue for fun, but neither of them are very good at knowing where to draw the line, so often one of them will accidentally say something genuinely upsetting and it’ll become an actual argument. they fight a lot, but they also make up pretty easily. tachi will flirt with anyone and everyone, and he’s usually successful. he’s got a huge amount of people on various planets that he keeps in touch with bc he slept with them once or twice and left on good terms. this comes in handy a Lot. cap and maisie do have the occasional other partner, but tachis has the most simply bc he’s the most extroverted and socially adept.

maisie love of my life !! okay she kinda sucks ngl. VERY fuck around and find out. this often results in Bad Things. cap and tachi think she’s the hottest person in the universe but she’s actually kind of gross and greasy. (obviously this only makes her hotter) she likes to hide deep in the inside working of the ship and build bombs, but she also does general repairs when necessary. she loves to be taken care of, which feeds very well into caps need to take care of people, especially since tachi hates being taken care of and will brush off a near fatal wound if he can.

Today I arrived at the new house. Getting here was quite a long journey, the realtor wasn't kidding when they said this place was remote, but at least the scenery on the drive here was nice. Red and orange leaves make me feel like I'm sitting in front of a nice fire. It's kind of cozy actually despite the chill in the air. The place is a lot more shabby than I remembered. The paint is peeling, shutters are loose or have fallen off completely, and spiderwebs cover the porch. And that's just the outside. Inside you have cracked tile in the kitchen, ripped wallpaper in the dining room, broken curtains in the bedroom, and that strange smell in the attic. This place is a real project but I love a good project. Besides, it'll feel nice to be doing something productive with my hands for once. Also, there's not a soul around to bother me. Hopefully all this peace and quiet will do me some good like the doctor said. This is the start of something new and I have high hopes for the future. 

I've been here a day and I'm already tired. Last night I couldn't sleep. The wind was something fierce. That loose shutter kept banging against the wall causing quite the ruckus and with each gust of wind the whole house seemed to moan. If I didn't know better I would have thought there was someone in the house. Perhaps a man based on how deep the moans were. Speaking of people I know I'm alone and that's the whole point of me coming out here. But I'm so used to being around people, I keep looking over my shoulder expecting someone to be there, watching me. I think once I'm more settled in, this feeling will go away. At least I hope so. I hate feeling like I'm being watched. It's a heavy feeling. I'm going to try to shake it all off and distract myself with some work. I think I'll start in the kitchen. 

I didn’t get far with the repairs in the kitchen. Something strange just happen and I’m not sure how to explain it. Perhaps it was just my lack of sleep, my mind playing tricks on me. As I was working my solitude was weighing on me. I need something to fill the space around me besides silence. So I got the radio and turned it on. Unfortunately, the only thing the radio picked up was a gospel station. But beggars can’t be choosers and there are worse sounds than a song of eternal devotion. Things were going ok and then the radio started cutting in and out. The static buzzed and I know this is going to sound crazy but I swear I heard something in the static. Not the song that was playing but a voice. I swear it said, “Get Out”. It was so strange. The voice was so clear. I hate to admit it, it sounds silly now, but it startled me. So much so that I turned off the radio. Silly really, it was nothing. Probably stress of moving and lack of sleep got the better of me. A little rest is all I need. 

I tried to sleep. I really did but this blasted wind wouldn’t let up. The banging of that shutter is now accompanied by the tapping of a branch on a window. This place, I swear! Too noisy when I need it to be quiet and too damn quiet when I need some noise. And to make it worst the temperature has dropped and I can’t get the heater to work. Right now I’m sitting in my car getting warm. I’m looking up at the house and its windows are staring down at me. My eyes keep getting drawn to the bedroom window. There’s a shadow lurking there. Logically I know it's that broken curtain but the shadow feels like something else. It’s watching me. I hesitate to go back to the house but there is no place else to go so I’ll be dragging myself back to bed.

I must have dozed off because I had the strangest dream. In the dream, I was in the house specifically in the dining room. The room wasn’t shabby and covered in dust but pristine almost like it was brand new. The wallpaper was whole and the pattern was actually recognizable. Little delicate birds in flight across the wall. I wasn’t alone in the room either. At the table sitting with me was a man. I don’t know what it was about him but when he smiled my skin crawled. The table was full too. Bowls of ripe fruit like pomegranates and strawberries. Plates full of mouth-watering meat. Decadent desserts of chocolate. And in the center, a raw bloody heart. It was still beating. With each second it grew louder and louder until a cacophony of banging shook the room. When the man went for the organ with a knife that’s when I woke up. I’m sitting in bed now, my hands trembling. I feel weak and tired. I want to sleep but when I close my eyes I see that heart. I fear I am not going to sleep anymore tonight. I’m going downstairs maybe do some reading. 

It was not a dream. How can this be real? How can this be happening? The dining room table is still set. The candles are lit. Am I still dreaming? Wait there is a sound! I hear him coming closer! 

There is more meat on the table. Heart, eyes, brain, liver. All swarmed with flies. No longer red but growing green fuzz. When he enters the room he is on the prowl. He circles the table and stops opposite me with the table between us. I try to run but he is quicker. Like a rabbit caught in the wolf’s mouth, he bites me and I return the favor. The taste of blood fills my mouth. The only witness to this violence is the walls of the house. They weep water from broken pipes. The porous wood drinks the spilled blood. The boards moan under the weight of our bodies. The birds in the wallpaper look away. I get away and run to the front door only to find it locked. I can’t get out so I go in deeper and I run to the bedroom locking the door behind me. The door rattles on the hinges as he tries to get in. “You can’t get away!”, he wails. Louder and louder the banging gets until the entire room shakes. I close my eyes. I want to wake up. I don’t want to sleep. Then everything goes quiet. I open the door to an empty hall, he is nowhere to be found. I make it back to the dining room. There he is at the head of the table, knife in hand. He lunges at me, knocking over the table and everything crashes to the floor. The candles light the alcohol in the wine ablaze which catches the table cloth on fire and the room goes up in flames. 

The man is gone now. All that’s left is me and the fire which keeps me warm and cozy. Finally, I can get some sleep.

Something to Feel - TEEKS (2021) Listening to this feels like summertime evenings, where there’s a fire burning in an old drum, everyone has a drink, and there’s a body of calm water nearby. The sound is so quintessentially the New Zealand music of my childhood. I tend to find that difficult to sit and intentionally listen to, but there’s something somehow different about this. Maybe it’s the themes of yearning. Anyway, I’m momentarily in love with it . Special song mentions: Remember Me; First Time

About U - MUNA (2017) This is my ‘staring out the passenger window in the rain, watching the sky turn bruise-coloured at the end of a long day’ album. I love this album with all my heart. Idk what about to say that sums it up any better. Special song mentions: Around U; Winterbreak

Surf Music - Paul Williams (2018) This is delightfully bizarre. I listened to this because James Acaster raved about it. I didn’t have high expectations. Paul Williams is a comedian who runs a basketball podcast with his more well-known brother. But it’s so good. Everything you could want in an album and more. There’s a recurring metaphor about basketball. There’s the lyric ‘I might not be the sharpest crayon, but that’s cos I’m your favourite.’ There’s a whole song about eating chips.

I love this album so much i made a uquiz about it. Oh! And - he sings with my exact accent. To the point that some parts are almost unintelligible the first time through. Special song mentions: Braces; Number One

Greetings From Ashbury Park, N.J. - Bruce Springsteen (1973) This is Bruce as I imagine him. The kinda whining timbre of his voice that makes me see him as he is today, not the skinny little thing he was in 1973. It’s fun! Opening with Blinded by the Light??? It’s a perfect encapsulation of his lyrics: some are deeply meaningful, some mean nothing!

It’s not my favourite Bruce album (honestly I get a little bored in the middle) it doesn’t even include my favourite songs. But it’s the sign of such good things to come, and that’s enough. Special song mentions: Blinded by the Light; Growin’ Up

Westlife - Westlife (1999) Westlife are the boyband of my pre-teenagehood. This album is the first time I ever heard them. I used to spend hours at my dad’s laptop copying the songs onto CDs so I could play them in my own bedroom. Except I missed several of the songs, so this album is a lot shorter in my head. Special song mentions: Flying Without Wings; Swear It Again

2 Cool 4 Skool - BTS (2013) You know me. I had to include this one. It’s such a baby album - only 7 songs. But without this I wouldn’t have my favourite albums of later years. I think about how they made this, their determination, the fact that is was critically a bit of a flop... But it’s BTS at their core.

It explains basically everything that will come. Songs fighting to uplift teenagers, encouraging people to follow their hearts and their dreams, to be themselves... I’ll stop myself, but seriously. I could write whole posts about their lyrics. If all you think BTS songs are is Butter and Dynamite, come to me and I will enlighten you. Special song mentions: Like; No More Dream

Hope World - j-hope (2018) This is just a fun album. It opens “say hello to my hope world!” and okay, yeah j-hope! Hi!! It did take me a couple of listens to fully appreciate it, but I looked up the lyrics and gave it some time, and I really do like it. It’s not for everyone but it really shows who he is as a person. It’s hopeful (heh) and it knows itself and loves itself. Special song mentions: Daydream; Airplane

PINK PLANET - Pink Sweat$ (2021) This album is what being in love sounds like. It’s playing in the background of the scene where the two love interests realise their one sided pining isn’t one sided. It sounds pink. It’s very nice. Special song mentions: 17; Honesty

Songs of Leonard Cohen - Leonard Cohen (1967) Okay so this. This might as well be Leonard Cohen’s Greatest Hits. This is a debut album?? What??? The songs sound like poetry and arguments and speeches and ballads and everything that is good. They’re gentle and they’re cutting and they’re about love and loss and hope and hate and pain and joy. I think there’s a lyric and a song in this for everyone . Special song mentions: Suzanne; The Stranger Song

My Head Is An Animal - Of Monsters and Men (2014) This one was hard to be honest. I nearly didn’t pick a number 10. So to be honest, I’ll keep it quick. This is just so calming. I come back to this when I need a little rest from my head, which is fitting given the title. Special Song Mentions: From Finner; Sloom

“‘Scuse me!” Adora squeezes between two girls, both of whom glare at her as she passes. She tries to smile apologetically, but it comes out as more of a grimace as she steps over a spilled drink on the floor.

The house she’s in is shaking with the music that pumps through it. Back in the living room, where Adora is headed, thirty or forty people are crammed in like sardines, pressed up against each other to the pounding bass. Adora is carrying drinks in her hands, one for herself and one for her friend Bow. Adora pushes and apologizes her way up the hallway until she’s on the edge of the living room, a few feet from the writhing dance floor.

Bow is probably somewhere in the middle. Adora sighs heavily, frowning down at the drink she had grabbed for him, and decides that if he wants it, he can come find her. Instead of trying to look for him in the darkened room, she walks along the edge, stepping over one or two passed-out forms and a lot of discarded plastic cups, until she reaches the door that leads out onto the deck.

Outside the house, which has black paper taped across all of its windows, it’s actually bright and sunny out. The deck wraps around the house, and is a hell of a lot less crowded than the inside of the house. Adora squints against the sunlight and starts to walk away from the door, towards an empty patch of deck off to her left—

—and walks straight into another person, spilling the drink in her left hand all over their body.

“What the fuck?” the person says. Adora stumbles back, pulling both drinks as far away from the stranger as she can.

“Shit, sorry,” Adora says. The stranger glares at her, and Adora notices suddenly that she’s spilled her drink on the most attractive girl she’s ever seen in her life. Long, curly hair held back with a bandana, tan skin, sharp jawline, freckles, and captivating eyes—one blue, one greenish-gold.

And a red t-shirt completely soaked in alcohol.

“God,” the girl says, rolling her eyes. “Can you watch where you’re fucking going?”

“Sorry,” Adora says again, wincing. “Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.”

“Yeah, clearly.” The girl looks down at her shirt and sighs. “Whatever. I guess I’ll go fucking wring the tequila out of my shirt.” She steps past Adora, and Adora will later blame her actions on the three shots she had in the kitchen before heading out to the deck, but she follows.

“I’m really sorry,” Adora says again, dropping the now-empty cup in a trash can by the door. “I haven’t seen you at one of Sea Hawk’s parties before.”

“Yeah, and I’m thinking I won’t come to another one,” the girl says, stepping through the door and back into the house. Adora follows her, wincing in embarrassment.

“Right,” she says. “That, uh, probably wasn’t the best introduction to them, but his parties are usually really fun!” The girl pauses, two steps up the stairs to the second floor of the house, and turns to stare at Adora.

“Dude, why the fuck are you following me?” she asks. Adora blinks.

“Sorry!” she says. “Sorry, I wasn’t trying to be weird or anything. If you want me to go away, I will.” The girl stares at her for another long moment, utter confusion in her eyes.

“I literally could not give less of a fuck what you do if I tried,” she says, and turns around to climb the stairs. Adora’s kind-of drunk brain decides that there’s a loophole there: if this girl doesn’t care what Adora does, that means Adora can keep following her.

“Sorry again,” Adora says, climbing the stairs behind the girl. The upstairs of the house is much quieter. There’s nothing up here for partygoers except the bathroom, and since Sea Hawk’s house was built kind of sloppily and all the individual stair-steps are slightly different heights, no one drunk enough to cause a problem makes it to the upstairs bathroom anyway. “But, at least it probably won’t stain? I’m Adora, by the way.”

“Good for you,” the girl says. They reach the bathroom, which is unoccupied, and she flicks the lights on. Adora hovers awkwardly in the doorway, unsure what to do or where to go. She just knows that this girl is more interesting than anything happening downstairs.

The girl takes her shirt off.

Adora makes a choked noise and averts her eyes immediately, staring a hole in the fish-patterned shower curtain across the room. The girl laughs, a high-pitched squeaking sound that Adora immediately falls in love with.

“Chill,” the girl says. “They’re just tits.” Adora does not chill. “Besides, isn’t that why you followed me up here? I figured you were trying to hit on me.”

“Uh...” She’s not...wrong, but Adora hadn’t exactly thought things through before she followed the girl up the stairs.

“Dude, it’s literally fine.” Adora, still staring resolutely at the shower curtain, hears the faucet switch on. “I don’t care if you look.” Slowly, Adora pulls her eyes back across the room, but she keeps her gaze firmly fixed on the girl’s face and refuses to look lower. The girl glances up at her, an amused look on her face. “You said your name was Adora, right?” she says. Adora, pretty sure that she’ll start babbling if she opens her mouth, nods. “I’m Catra. You always this afraid of girls you think are hot?”

“That’s a big assumption,” Adora says. “What makes you think I think you’re hot?” The sentence doesn’t quite make sense in her intoxicated brain, but she goes with it.

“Why else would you throw a drink at me?”

“I didn’t throw—” Adora begins, indignant, but she’s interrupted by Catra laughing again.

“You know what?” she says, wringing her shirt out in the sink (and Adora does not look at the way her arms flex as she does so, absolutely not). “You’re fun to mess with, Adora. I’ll forgive you for the drink if you come dance with me.” Adora blinks, trying to compute Catra, dancing, dancing with Catra, Catra maybe touching Adora while dancing—

“Yep,” Adora says, unable to agree fast enough. “Sounds good. Let’s do that.”
