It's that time of year again where Mari Lwyd starts to be talked about and shared around and an INCREDIBLY misleading post gets shared a lot. As someone who grew up with Mari Lwyd I wanted to clear some things up.

Also hello, if you are unaware who Mari Lwyd is. This is about the Welsh tradition of the horse skull who visits houses during the Christmas to New Years period in Wales asking for alcohol.

First off and probably the most important one:

Mari Lwyd is not a cryptid!

I can not emphasise this enough. She. Is. Not. A. Cryptid. There is no story or mystery about a ghost or zombie horse roaming the Welsh valleys. She's not even supposed to be a ghost or a zombie. It's just a horse skull on a stick with a guy under a sheet. She's a hobbyhorse and a folk character used to tell Welsh stories and keep songs alive. When people spread the misinformation that she's a cryptid, it's the equivalent of saying Kermit the Frog is a cryptid.

She is actually only one character in a wider cast of characters who go door to door or, in more modern times, pub to pub. The cast of characters can change town to town and village to village but there are some common ones I see time and time again. The Leader, the Merryman, The Jester and The Lady are just some I see regularly. Punch and Judy used to be more popular a few years ago but I haven't seen them in a while as their tradition has mostly fallen out of popularity. In most cases, almost the whole cast will be played by men. Even the characters are considered and referred to as female. Though this again depends and varies by which group is partaking in the Mari Lwyd tradition.

This point also goes onto my second point,

Mari Lwyd does not rap.

I think this comes from a very common misunderstanding of what rap is vs spoken word. Rap is a very specific style of music originating from the African American communities of the USA and has it's own structure and motifs unique to it. It's a lot more complex than people give it credit for as a style of music and just flippantly assign anything similar to it as being rap. If someone is talking fast or reciting poetry, it is not rap. Or anything that is an exchange of words between two people is not a rap battle. Mari Lwyd does not do rap, actually something that gets left out of these posts is the fact Mari Lwyd does not even speak. It's actually the Leader, who does all the speaking and song based banter between the house/pub owner for entry. Mari Lwyd just clicks her mouth, bites people and bobs her head around.

I think Mari Lwyd is a really beautiful and unique part of Welsh culture. She's not actually as wildly celebrated as a lot of the posts make her out to be. Actually, I think most Welsh people themselves learn about Mari Lwyd through the internet as well. Her popularity is increasing thanks to the drive of local groups wanting to keep the traditions alive and a renewed desire to document Welsh traditions before they're gone. Which is why it's such a shame that she's turned into something she's not to earn horror points on the internet. I think this is why it bothers me so much to see the misunderstandings of the culture and the folk tradition. Mari Lwyd's origin is very hot debated as well as how long it's been going on for. But I think it's thanks to a lot of traditions like this that the Welsh language and our stories weren't lost forever. Welsh culture is recovering as is the language. But it's still in a very fragile place. I think it's why it's important to document and correct information when it's spread.

Anyway, if you want to see the tradition in action, here's a lovely video from the Cwmafan RFC going to one of the pubs for charity. It includes the song exchange with the pub owner for entry and the whole pub singing and joining in once Mari Lwyd and the rest are inside.

i love the fact that the wonderlands sekai is created from tsukasa's feelings, and i like to imagine how much his feelings can affect the sekai and vocaloids that inhabit it.

for instance, usa-chan is in the sekai, but what else? do you think there are some of rui's robots? like the dragon one from their new years show, or the zombie ones from the halloween show. it's so fun to think about.

i imagine if tsukasa had a crush on rui (using him as an example because i love rks), it would affect the vocaloids, especially miku and kaito, since they are the two that are the most strongly connected to the sekai. would miku become more clingy as a manifestation of tsukasas thoughts and feelings? would kaito tend to pay more attention to him? (obviously neither in a romantic way between them and rui, as they are just tsukasa's feelings.)

also, since tsukasa was able to create an entire world, do you think his feelings would be able to manipulate the sekai? if he was going through a hard time, would it become a bit more empty?

again, if he had a crush on rui, would it be able to create a small space just for them two? a place for them to relax and cuddle and all things like that? i love the idea of that and i need to know how much of an influence tsukasas feelings have on the sekai, especially because he is the sole creator of it.

"Trick or treat!!"

A common scene in suburban Anytown, USA. Small children running from house to house, shrieking, parents walking along behind them. And two teenage girls, with a bit of gore makeup and torn clothes - just enough to suggest zombie versions of themselves, but not so much that they weren't still attractive - standing on a porch, in the light of an open door.

“Well, what have we here?” the man said, leaning on the door frame with an easy smile. “The sexy zombie, an excellent choice.”

The blonde one giggled. “You think we’re sexy, mister?” she said, throwing out a hip.

“Don’t be gross, Jess,” muttered the other zombie.

The man laughed. “You guys look great. How old are you? Still in school?”

“We’re seniors. We were supposed to go to a party, but our friends bailed on us after we already had our faces on, so we thought we’d take a walk, get some candy.”

“Wise choice. You haven’t had too much of ‘Aren't you a little too old for trick-or-treating,’ I hope...”

“Nah,” said Jess. “Once or twice, but overall, people have been really nice. What’s the harm, right? It's Halloween!”

“Exactly. And better than a lot of things teenagers could be getting up to. Hang on."

The man turned, and passed his hand over the big bowl of little candy before reaching into the little bowl full of big candy. He handed the girls a pair of chocolate bars.

"Full size candy bars? Awesome! Thanks!"

"Happy Halloween, you two. Have fun tonight."

He smiled, showing his teeth.

They waved, and hopped down the steps, giggling as they headed toward the next house.

The man closed the door slowly, watching them go. On the back of the door was a small chalkboard, with a piece of chalk attached by string. He carefully took the chalk and added two tally marks to the marks already counted there ...

The leaves were crunchy underfoot as Jessika and Dionne crossed the quiet suburban street. It was dark enough that there were fewer kids out now. Most of the younger ones had been taken home.

“My bag is getting heavy,” said Jess.

“Oh, poor baby! I’ve got so much candy, I can hardly carry it all,” laughed her friend. “ ‘I can’t close my wallet cuz it’s too full of fifties, and my diamond shoes are too tight.’ ”

“Stop it.” She gave Dee a playful shove.

It was a nice warm night, warmer than average for Halloween. A nice night for a nice walk with her best friend.

“I’m gonna start eating my candy, I’m hungry.”

Then they both shouted, “Hungry for SUGARRRRR…” One of their many pointless running gags, whose origins were lost in time.

“So what’s your boyfriend doing tonight?” asked Jessika, rummaging in her bag.

“Oh, you know, nothing much. Just being useless. Call of Duty, I think, or one of those games that’s more important than going to a party with his – What?”

Jess had let out a squeal. “I forgot about this! Lookit that big-ass slab of chocolate…” She produced the bar from the man they’d dubbed “Mr King Size” – a nickname that had kept them in stitches for blocks. “I’m starting with this … “

It was some kind of off-brand chocolate – not a name they’d ever heard of before. But that didn’t matter, “Chocolate Fog” was exactly what she needed right then. She tore it open and broke off a piece, then moaned, in shocked exuberance.

“Holy cow, what am I eating?! My mouth just had an orgasm!”

“Gimme!”

“You got your own …”

“One piece!”

“Damn, it even smells good. Here, smell it.” She held the chocolate under Dionne’s nose, and was a little impressed – and a little aroused – when she saw her friend’s eyes flutter. Dee’s mouth hung open a little, and her eyes glazed for a second.

“Oh, fuck, that smells divine. Where’s mine …”

Dionne had to fight back a sudden impulse to dump the whole bag out just to find the candy bar. She got on her knees on the sidewalk and dug around with both hands and it didn’t take long to find the biggest piece of candy. In seconds she had torn off one end of the wrapper, broken off a square, and stuffed it in her mouth.

“Oh godd why is that so good …” moaned Dionne, lying back on the sidewalk. “Am I just that chocolate-starved?”

“Get up, you lunatic!” laughed Jess. She had already chewed up a second piece, and was licking her chocolatey fingers. “Mmmm, I’m definitely going to have to find some more of these at the store …” She sucked on her fingers, not wanting to take them out of her mouth, in case she found a little more chocolate taste. “Geffup,” she said indistinctly, giving her friend a gentle kick.

Dionne leapt dutifully to her feet, and they walked on. “Here, I’ll show you good I think it is,” said Dee. She peeled back the paper and sucked on one end of the bar, then started pushing it slowly into her mouth. Her moans took on a sexual quality.

“Eww you’re disgusting!!” screamed Jess, finally taking the fingers out of her mouth.

Dionne put a hand to the back of her own head, and pushed her head onto the chocolate, simulating someone forcing it deeper and deeper into her mouth. Jess howled with laughter as she broke off another square.

Dee had felt the chocolate hit the back of her throat, just for a second, and now, as she pulled the bar slowly out of her mouth, strings of drool hanging between it and her lips, she panted. A light sheen of sweat showed on her face as they approached the streetlight, and her eyes seemed a little out of focus as she gasped breathlessly.

“Here, watch this,” said Jessika. The square had been melting between her warm fingers for a moment, but now she held it up to run her tongue over and around the dark chunk. Around and around her tongue swirled, as she made oral love to it, watching her friend with a smirk.

Dee licked her lips as she watched, mesmerized … staring at the chocolate. Staring at her friend’s tongue. Jess popped it into her mouth, and Dee, still not smiling, just watched. Watched her lips as she chewed, the tongue that came out to lick the lips … Then her eyes moved to Jess’s chocolatey fingers.

With a sudden grab for her wrist, she sucked Jess’s fingers into her wet, warm mouth. Dee’s eyes closed and she shuddered a little as she tasted the chocolate. Waves of pleasure tremored through her body and she moaned, and kept sucking, working her tongue between the fingers, poking her fingernails into the back of her throat.

“Oh god,” Jessika breathed, open-mouthed at this performance. Dionne really looked like a zombie for the first time all night – heavy-lidded, dull-brained, drooling, and needy.

Dionne didn’t hesitate. She moved in, kissing her friend passionately. They bit the chocolate in half and each kept chewing and tasting while sucking on each other’s tongues, hands groping their clothing, their skin …

Jess’s hand pressed into Dee’s cunt.

Dee lifted Jess’s sweater to squeeze her breast.

His name is Asta Isayev and he's a mutant created by Umbrella Europe. He was born in Belarus and at the age of 10 was adopted by a scientist named Michael Elrod and then moved with him to Hamburg in 1988. There Asta was experimented on. They were working on development of mutation similar to "lickers" but modified with animal DNA. Just like that they created mutation later called Fenrir.

Elrod thought that Asta's brain will be damaged during experiments just like other T-virus infected and will became a controllable puppet but Asta's brain stayed unharmed. It was an even bigger success for the project and later on they tried to recreate it with other test subjects but failed. Umbrella Europe unsatisfied with this result later on closed a whole program, but kept Asta alive for a few years later.

Later Umbrella Europe found a purpose for Asta. They were pissed about the quick progress of G-virus in Umbrella USA. They decided to train Asta and then send him to Raccoon City to steal their data and samples. He was introduced as a new officer in RPD.

Then there was a zombie apocalypse, decision to escape Umbrella etc. His story is soooo long and complicated, maybe later I will give more details about it since I have A LOT of drawings of him. I even made a vtuber model for him that I will show in next post ^^

Clarke wiped the sweat from her brow, breath haggard and muscles sore.

It was coming to the end of their prep time. Lists were crumpled and covered in smudged pencil marks, crossing off each crucial item as if it was as simple as a grocery list––instead of the very items that would protect their small pocket of humanity against the encroaching invasion. The long hot summer days were a blessing, even if it didn’t feel like it when you were in the trenches of the humidity. But it gave them more daylight, more time to get things moving and taken care of before night fell. Being able to see for miles was a gift, even if the threat still hadn’t fully reached their outpost in rural Virginia. 

The large yellow farmhouse wasn’t originally meant as a safe house for a zombie outbreak.

But here they were.

Biting her lip, Clarke glanced back at the house. It rose up on the grassy knoll, golden in the late afternoon sun. For now, the doors were wide open as people traversed in and out of it. A wrap-around porch, one she’d imagined painting on in the mornings, was lined with wooden white slats that she’d barely had a chance to finish repainting before everyone’s priorities shifted. Unseen, deep below the house, was the sprawling basement, now-turned bunker.

She was, no matter what, glad she’d purchased the house. She just wished it could be for the reasons she’d first had. 

But at least there was comfort in its new abilities.

A place where Madi would hopefully be able to grow up, when (if) all of this was over. Remote enough to hunt and grow their food, less needs to go into town and increase risk of infection. Plenty of storage for Octavia and Niylah as the latter taught the former all that she’d learned growing up even deeper in the area, down in the depths of Appalachia. Crucial skills that would help provide for them as they prayed for a day when things would hopefully return to normal. Even from here, down near the front edge of the property, she could see Murphy running Picasso around as he wore him out for the impending evening. 

The house would hopefully be a fresh start for more than just her now.

The thought left a bruising ache on her heart.

Fuck, she was tired.

She’d spent so much of her early twenties running. Running from things and people, all situations that now feel so trivial to think about. Sure, the whole hindsight-is-20/20-thing. But that type of growth had been accelerated the moment the news broke out on the TV. Clarke was just glad she’d been able to say goodbye to her mom before shit hit the fan. That they’d been able to bury the hatchet before she’d passed away.

It was the image of her mom in her mind’s eye, giving her one last comforting smile, that pushed Clarke to get back to hoisting the jugs of water out of the back of the truck and into the wagon she was filling. It was better to save on gas for now, do more heavy work by hand, than have it go extra mileage it didn’t need to. Better––certainly not easier. 

Clarke was an artist with a trust fund; her experience with manual labor had been limited to the single horse camp she’d gone to in middle school. She’d chosen debate club over sports in high school. Now, she’d spent the last couple weeks repairing the house, the garden, and the fence around the property. She and Bellamy climbed up onto the roof to fix it themselves. Hauling rocks to help Raven build the well. She held Madi tightly at night when the young girl had panic attacks, the soreness of her muscles nothing compared to her need to soothe her newly adopted daughter. Her brain hurt from planning and worrying. Her eyes dry from late nights with Bellamy, counting and counting and counting once more to make sure that their supplies would cover them for at least a little while.

Choosing to survive felt like a thankless task. One that some days she wasn’t sure she was cut out to do.

But as the news had grown more bleak each day, scientists pleading with the public to do what they could while cures were tested and chaos attempted to remain at bay, Clarke had felt something else.

A stirring determination to make it through. To live, not just survive.

She knew that there were no promises for tomorrow. The hoards coming over from DC would be upon their lands sooner than later. The valley was still lush in pockets and she could only hope it would give them enough cover.

It was hard to imagine she’d ever feel this tired again. Muscles sore and aching, arms fighting to not shake as Bellamy carefully taught her how to shoot.

But she knew she had to keep going. Push through the exhaustion and remind herself of the hope for the future.And she’d do everything she could to make sure they all made it there.

Sometimes it's not easy to find certain things. You search and somehow only a few know.

It took me a long time to find good websites, and today I'm sharing them with you.

Google Maps → Most people don’t know, but you are able to create your own map on Google. It’s a little complicated, that’s why I suggest you to google it – otherwise write me, and I’ll try to help you. It’s very helpful and if your story is based in this world, you can easily mark places or change them. I love it!

Canva.com → You need a Cover, but don’t know how to start? This site gives you the opportunity to use fonts, templates and much more. Sometimes it automatically offers you pictures from pixabay.com, which are free to use. If not, you can also visit this site and check out if a picture matches your wishes. Play with it and watch how you create your own book cover. (It offers even more than covers, but I’m not going to talk about it in this post.)

Familyecho.com → If you want to create a family tree without much work, this will help you. It’s a great site, and you can actually see how everyone is related.

Korrekturen.de → This is a German site, and I’m not sure, how good it is for English. BUT for German writers, this is almost a must-have. It’ll correct your writing prompts and help you to think more about your text. You just have to remember one thing: It only allows you to correct 1.5k words at a time. If your writing is longer, you have to copy and paste all the time (like me!).

Lanuagetool.org → This is the alternative for every other language (including German). You can apply it on your browser, download it, or just use it online.

Worldanvil.com → If you want to create a whole new world, this site will help you. I haven’t checked it out in detail till now, but I really like it. You can create a history of a world, an atlas, encyclopedia and areas and a map – it offers everything.

Nuclearsecrecy.com → If you’re writing a story, where a bomb is exploding, you can use this. You can select the type of bomb, and then you’ll see how much it will destroy. Great thing, if you’re going to write a dystopian story.

Mattbierbaum.github.io/zombies-usa/ → Another great site for zombie stories is this. I only found and used it for the USA, but I’m sure you can get it for other parts of the world as well. Here you can place a zombie and check how much time it’ll take till he comes to a certain place. Furthermore, you can simulate how fast he’ll spread the virus in a certain time. It’s a very interesting thing, and you can practically watch how quick the apocalypse will take down a country.

Oldmapsonline.org → If you are writing a story, which takes place in the past, this site might help you. You can check out old maps and furthermore, you can place them in today's world map and get an idea of how it used to be back then.

Tvtropes.org → You don’t know what kind of story you write? Well, there’s a name for everything. A list of tropes can be found here. Have fun and feel free to tell others what you’re writing.

Nanowrimo.org → I’m not such a fan of this site, BUT as a motivation it might help you to connect with other writers during the nanowrimo – the months in which writing is THE topic! You don’t upload anything there, but you talk to others and share your word counts!

Dafont.com → Most people are using the same font over and over. Sometimes a change in look, can motivate you so much! You can download every kind of font here, and almost everything is for free! (Remember the talk about covers? You can use those fonts for them.)

YouTube → Everybody knows it, but only a little people use it. You can create playlists and make a great soundtrack for your story.

Messletters.com → it’s a great site, if you need a different kind of writing and the page you’re writing only offers a few. You can copy them easily and use them. Furthermore, this site also has a lot of symbols. Check it out and see if it satisfies your aesthetic heart.

DeepL.com → if you require translations, use this one instead of Google translator. You can also upload PPTX data and much more.

Ko-Fi.com → if you want to sell stuff or just a tip from your readers, this site will help you. You can easily create an account and your readers can give you little money as a support.

Timeanddate.com → You want to know what kind of weather it was on a certain date at a certain place? This site will help you.

This Toonami Trending Rundown is a double feature for June 28 & 29-30 and July 5 & 6-7, 2024, as these two weeks marked the season finale of Zom 100.

In regards to trending, during both Toonami Rewind broadcast of June 28 and July 5, #ToonamiRewind would trend in the USA. And for both nights of June 29-30 and July 6-7, #Toonami would trend in the United States alongside My Adventures with Superman and Zom 100. #Toonami would also trend on Tumblr during the latter week.

The Zom 100 manga continues on Akira, Shizuka, Kencho, and Beatrix’s storyline, which is also being published stateside by Viz Media, which is still going strong with 17 volumes and 67 chapters and counting. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on when and if we’ll see a second season of the Zom 100 anime as of now. As previously mentioned, the anime saw numerous production issues and setbacks that regularly delayed the release of episodes during its original Japanese run, most notably with the final three episodes being delayed for over three months. So even if a second season is already greenlit, it’s quite understandable that the animation studio might need some time to get things back together. Nevertheless, Zom 100 sure was a fun ride, and hopefully we’ll see this show return in the future. In the meantime, feel free to check out the manga, in addition to a live action film by Netflix, that has been on their service since August 3, 2023.

This week’s feature was a game review of Animal Well, a platformer developed by Shared Memory and published by Bigmode. It received an 8/10 score.

During the Production I.G panel on the Saturday of Anime Expo 2024, the panelists revealed the voice cast of the upcoming anime adaption of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki. The English cast will include:

As for a potential release date, In an interview with The Japan Times released on June 29, Ito revealed that “the first of four episodes is complete, and lives up to his expectations.” The article also mentioned that Uzumaki is set to air later this year. During San Diego Comic-Con, Toonami announced that Uzumaki would indeed be premiering this September 28, 2024 at 12:30 a.m., following premiere episodes of Rick and Morty: The Anime.

Speaking of Comic-Con, we also got some news regarding several original productions and acquisitions. We got a new show announcement in Rooster Fighter by Shū Sakuratani. Rick and Morty: The Anime will also be premiering on Adult Swim on August 17, with the Japanese with English subtitled version of the episode premiering on Toonami starting August 19. Lazarus by Shinichiro Watanabe will be premiering in 2025. And finally, Aniplex has announced that Toonami will be airing Demon Slayer’s Swordsmith Village arc on August 10 at midnight, with successive episodes airing on 12:30 a.m, at least until September 28.

Crunchyroll has revealed a new trailer, key visual, and release date for the third and final season of Fire Force. Season 3 will be split into two cours (roughly around 24-26 episodes combined), the first half premiering in April 2025, while the second premieres in January 2026. In terms of trending, #FireForce would trend in the USA as a result.

It is fascinating comparing zombie movies made outside of the United States of America to USAian zombie movies-- not because the concept of zombies is explored more compellingly by USAian directors, but because these popular zombie films rely on certain kinds of detached brutality that almost necessitate the presence of guns.

Also, this country makes a shit ton of zombie films.

The most popular version of the zombie in post-1990s USA cinema is an unthinking object that, by virtue of zombies having the singular purpose of devouring their victims (i.e. either consuming humanity -- literally -- or reproducing itself through half-hearted consumption), can be the subject of almost any level of justified, even necessary, violence. You can hardly be responsible for taking a human life if the human life is an unthinking, moving corpse — it's murder without any moral valence.

If anything, the zombie doesn't just need to be met with automatic violence, but extraordinary violence: destroying the brain, especially by means of a gun. The zombie appetence for violence is only matched by this brutishness required to eradicate it from existence. And eradication, as mentioned, is the only option with zombies, as they're incapable of understanding any form of human communication. To me, this ontological weirdness when it comes to zombies indicates both a delight in the spectacle of violence and a deep shame at having that appetite. The gore of zombie films is both puerile and sterile; anxious excess with perverse decorum.

Further, USAian zombie media is both subtextually obsessed with and afraid of diaspora and refugees -- The Walking Dead slouches through season after season and spinoff after spinoff based on the idea that the eventual dissolution of a safe haven is inevitable in the zombie apocalypse; characters will always be cast out of a place they try to create roots in. The same is generally true of the Zombieland duology, the Crazies, Dawn of the Dead (2004), etc.

There is a sense that these characters are refugees running from refugees — the ones who conceal that they have been infected, the ones who sink to the level of the zombies in this new world, etc. For example, World War Z both implicitly connects Palestinians to the spread of the virus with shots of teeming hordes of the undead trying to climb over a wall erected around all of Israel (not just the real West Bank barrier). This connection becomes explicit when people beyond this wall are allowed entry and a young girl in the group begins to sing. When she won't stop singing, riling up the zombies with the noise, she is shot; this attracts the attention of the zombies, and they finally swarm over the wall in a frenzy.

And I say all this as someone who is deeply interested in horror -- and in zombie films specifically! I think the sublimated anxieties and prejudices of the genre make these films all the more thought-provoking.
