why a recoin?

because I first made marvlaen (then known as briscenic) out of spite, it was a blatant recoin of an already existing term called kocirine, made only because I didnt like how the creator of kocirine compared paraphilia recovery to conversion therapy. even if I still dont agree with the maker of kocirine I know way better now than to remake terms out of spite, so I wanted a chance at redemption. the only thing marvlaen and kocirine have in common now is that it relates to bright colors.

so whats the difference between marvlaen and kocirine then?

I view kocirine more as glitchcore, eyestrain puke /pos, hyperpop, breakcore, danganronpa edit kinda colorful, which is what it seems to describe itself as, while marvlaen was (re)made with things like scopermonstar's work and things like isshoku hada, monster-like makeup/fashion/cosplay etc. as a goal of the vibe. it might not seem too different to some people but theres an important enough difference to me personally ^^'

its been a really good spring so far, with so many of my faves releasing music, and obviously that includes sebastian. i remember watching the runway show this was made for, but for some reason i didnt hear the whole track - maybe it was just highlights or something? i really love the synths in this one. its unusual for him to bring the choral singing in the start instead of the climax of the track, but its really well done (as always)! i wish, i wiiiiiiiiish there was something happening about the new album, too.

charli's really being weird recently about everything but goddddddd this slaps so good. im usually not that big on gesaffelstein but i do love ag cook so much. its going to be such a good clubbing record like literally.... its crazy she STILL gets labeled hyperpop. i also like club classics, but b2b is TRULY superior out of this double drop....

the beat of this one is just stuck in my head at all times. its cute! fun! perfect for spring. theyre soon to release their debut album, i need to remember to check it out. while its not SOTY material so far, its just cool and pleasant.

ok i for sure posted this one before, but its ok bc it got like 0 or 1 likes or something. starwolf is a band im really hopeful for!!!! their 2020 album was pretty interesting, but its their three last singles that got my ears all perked up. some daytime disco vibes in them, and its really cool considering i was somewhat.... underwhelmed by poolside's last album. so, i feel good about starwolf now! fingers crossed for summer, as it would be a perrrrrrrfect record to replay over and over during hot sunny days.

re: music genre discourse i guess

i think like. unfortunately the genres i dont like do in fact include country and rap but not for the usual reasons

for country i just dont really like the instrumentation of it? like. the sound of it is a bit grating for me. kinda in the same way some hyperpop or noise tracks are? like. a lot of the country tracks ive heard use this kinda twangy guitar thats not quite banjo but not quite acoustic either its like. not a sound my brain enjoys

and then for rap its mostly just bc i like stuff with strong backing tracks/melodies? and a lot of the contemporary stuff right now is very much. similar sounding basic beats with vocal focus. and it just doesn't do anything for me. like i really love tech n9ne's speed of sound but i absolutely cannot listen to the original bc the backing beat is just dogshit. but when people throw it into mashups it works so well with a proper backing track that it upsets me that it didnt have one in the first place

OH ALSO as a fun little side project. ive been making a big google doc full of different artistic techniques by tearing apart clip studio paint’s settings to find niche opportunities and going on an odyssey through Youtube Search “Art Tutorial/Coloring Tutorial/How to Draw People/How to Draw Hair/How t”

It’s a passion project of mine, to make a collection of different methods of drawing because I realize a big plateau for artists is when they keep thinking “what do I want to draw” instead of “how do i want to draw.” 

Honestly, it’s been pretty interesting so far! A couple tips that I’ve learned so far:

For watercolor (in clip studio paint), don’t rely on the brush’s watercolor edge. Seriously, you’ll get the edge every single time you make a brush stroke. INSTEAD go to layer settings -> border -> watercolor border so you can make a block of watercolor color and then adjust the border from there. You get much more control and can adjust blurriness, opacity, darkness, etc.

Holographic textures. I’m still looking into different ways of doing this, but gradient maps seem to be very popular. For those who dont know, gradient maps take a set greyscale tone and assign it a color (this color’s tone does not need to be equal to the grey tone).

Actually, on the topic of gradient maps. I only learned a few months ago that people color greyscale paintings using gradient maps, and that’s one of the methods used to make it not look god awfully muddy.

So I found this tutorial on Youtube about someone who shades by progressively making the shading change to a contrasting color and I. Am fascinated by that. Will get back to yall when I experiment with that. (For credit’s sake, the tutorial was made by @bluebescuits and can be found here, set to the beginning of that part of the video https://youtu.be/zZEF7SEh2S4?t=428)

COLOR JITTER. there are so many possibilities with this one. One thing I was doing back around artfight was selecting areas of light and using a HEAVILY color jittered brush to color it in. Then, select the shaded areas and do the same. Afterwards, I’d turn off the color jitter and just start rendering using whatever color I wanted. Usually, indigo/blue/purple colors would be used moreso for the darkest spots because they have a darker tone by default, and yellow/pink would be used for the lightest colors.

Because I’ve talked about color tone a few times, I feel like I need to include this Youtube tutorial, “HOW TO HYPERPOP (draw with saturated colors)”: https://youtu.be/NKV2VWWleBk It’s what originally inspired me to make this google doc, and absolutely exploits the tone-color relationship do make some REAL interesting art. RDR2 Modern AU Music Taste Headcanons

and if this crashes tumblr again i’ll be upset beyond belief

Arthur: Honestly enjoys whatever’s popular at any given time, but has a deep love for country classics. Johnny Cash in regular rotation.

John: 2000′s emo shit, grunge and Vocaloid. probably wanted to look just like Machigerita-P at some point. (ditto, honestly.)

Abigail: 80′s chick music and riotgrrl rock. Very fervent enjoyer of all things Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks and Courtney Love.

Dutch: the most godawful mix of incel indie and RYMcore post-rock. ever wanted to hear a constant rotation of Swans and Weezer?

Hosea: showtunes and comedy music. big fan of Weird Al, Bo Burnham and ESPECIALLY Tom Lehrer. adores the original Cats soundtrack.

Micah: hideously tryhard noise music that he moreso enjoys tormenting others with. this guy will play Whitehouse on any and all first dates.

Charles: his autism is anti-loud noise flavor, so he errs towards ambient chill pop stuff like Animal Collective and Beach House. (the kind of thing i hate sorry charles)

Sadie: any and all country songs about killing or inconveniencing your husband. also Paramore.

Bill: bro-country. got tricked into listening to Ram Ranch once and cried for three hours.

Javier: gives me metalhead vibes but also the only artists I think he really cares about are Gorillaz and Arca and i cant explain why

Lenny: probably enjoys most things. i think he likes late 90′s conscious rap like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest a lot tho

Sean: goofy boy rock bands like Tub Ring and The Presidents of the United States mixed in with the most awful 2000′s trash rock that he pirates

Kieran: white gay twink indie like Car Seat Headrest, Cavetown and a little bit of Jack Stauber

Mary-Beth: unironically, movie soundtracks. this the kind of girl who sits around listening to the LotR score like a dork.

Tilly: any and all mainstream 60′s-70′s music no matter how lame or dorky. absolutely adores the really early boy band era of the Beatles.

Karen: rave music, hyperpop, breakcore, basically anything that’d cause a victorian child to explode.

Uncle: his playlist is just a russian roulette game, most of the time you’ll get prog rock and sometimes you’ll get Jimmy Buffett and it’s pretty much a crapshoot.

Grimshaw: mostly likes jazz, is usually too busy to listen to any music and if you asked her her favorite artist she’d shrug and say “leonardo da vinci i guess”

Swanson: enjoys metal and punk, is basically just that one joke that was in every ad for Monsters University. (you know the one)

Strauss: Field recordings of people screaming. nah but fr i dont think he actually gets much out of listening to music. classical maybe. hes old.

Pearson: old-timey folk songs and sea shanties. big fan of The Pogues as well. Javier told him about Scottish pirate metal once... big mistake.

Molly: mid-2010′s tumblrcore girl pop. every argument with Dutch is usually book-ended by relistening to “Cry Baby” or “Norman Fucking Rockwell” again

Jack: fucking baby shark or some shit idk hes four years old

Trelawny: 90′s and 2000′s r&b and pop. this man WILL scam you and then go home and listen to TLC.

I'm 18, I'm bi, I use she/her pronouns, I'm 5'3 and I'm pretty chubby, I'm black with dark skin and I have pastel pink locs right now but I like to dye my hair a lot!!!

I'm an infp and a Gemini sun, Libra moon, Gemini rising (with great decision making skills as you can imagine).

I have adhd and I tend to not speak until I'm spoken to, but once I start talking I don't stop easily lol. If I'm talking about something I'm especially interested in I can literally go on for hours at a time. I'm really into witchcraft, mythology, most cartoons, all of the twilight movies except new moon cause I don't like seeing ppl get sad, and languages, of which I'm currently learning seven (almost none of which are remotely useful lol) I especially love dead languages, rn I'm learning ancient Egyptian and Latin and I am ✨obsessed✨.

I'm a huge history nerd but I hate hearing about war and politics because they can be kinda triggering for me, i don't rlly like violence unless I know it's explicitly fake (so supernatural horror movies r usually good but if it seems to plausible I start to freak out lol). I'm incredibly sensitive but I think since I talk so much and overthink constantly I'm a lot more likely to just communicate with someone instead of arguing or fighting with them, (not that I can or would want to fight anyone I hate all physical activity so much lol) and I love love and being romanced but I have pretty bad trust issues

My favorite genre of music is probably hyperpop even though I listen to literally everything (one of my favorite songs is an Icelandic lullaby about the ghost of a child calling out to its mom) and I almost always have headphones on at 100% volume.

My receiving love languages are acts of service, gift giving, and quality time and my giving love languages are gift giving and quality time, I'll cry while watching anything even though I hate crying in front of people, and I love literally all animals (except centipedes, they scare me a lot) and would jump in front of a Mac truck for literally any stray cat, and I can and have walked into mildly unsafe areas for the sake of getting a better glimpse at some raccoons
