The reason the hetalia fandom has such a bad rap is because when it was in its hayday, people really liked it. Which is fine, except the time period the countries anthromorphizations were specifically based off of were WWII and the main characters were Germany, Japan, and Italy

So you had loads of fans who were dressing up like the German, Italian, and Japanese armies circa WWII, and defending Germany, Italy, and Japan circa WWII.

of course, not every fan, or even the majority of fans, were like this. But even if they weren't being Weird about the Axis Powers circa WWII a lot of non fans rightfully pointed out that there's always gonna be Issues with anthropomorphizing countries because you can't really flatten a country's history into one person without falling into racist stereotypes.

But even if the stereotypes were ok, a lot of people didn't like how the author didn't seem to respect the bloody histories of these countries. Especially given the author focused on European countries, Russia, Japan, and America, all of which are countries with very, very bloody war/colonialist/racist histories. I don't think they touched on the Southern Hemisphere at all. And while they did mention China and Korea at least once (IIRC) a lot of people were uncomfortable with Japan making jokes about China and Korea considering the war crimes Japan still will not admit to.

Basically, flattening that history into cute anime boys was very off putting for a lot of people, and varies from disrespectful to outright racist.

Nico can already summon the dead! He doesn't need a special object for it! Literally IN THE SCENE WHERE THEY GET THE SCEPTER, NICO RAISES THE DEAD. HE'S NOT WEAK ENOUGH THAT HE CAN'T! Hazel meanwhile has never raised the dead before (kind of - she did a little bit like once)! Theoretically she's fully capable of it but she's never properly tried it before! Giving her an object to help facilitate practicing with that would be perfect, especially given the scepter expires after a certain number of uses! Also, since Hazel ends up a praetor in TOA anyways, there's no reason why she shouldn't get promoted to be able to use the scepter all on her own! In fact her getting promoted in the House of Hades would be the perfect place to do so because it's a scene where she's taking the lead and saving everyone else! In fact it's a significantly better place to promote her to praetor over the scene where she ACTUALLY gets promoted! And even if you don't have Hazel promoted instead, then you'd still have it be Hazel and Frank working together to command the armies of the undead, which is perfect because they're a couple and it'd be a great way to show how well they work together!!!!!

LITERALLY THERE IS NO REASON TO NOT GIVE IT TO HAZEL. WHAT'S THE DEAL.

Roy has gotten food poisoning from his dorm meal plan at least once (based on at least one true story)

The heap trio + Mandy would be those friends constantly playing majong in the dorm lounge and if all the majong tables are taken they just play in one of their dorm rooms on a towel to dampen the tile shuffling noises (it was Mandy's idea)

Every morning Dani goes to the drinks stall at her faculty and orders one iced coffee to the point where the stall owner starts preparing an iced coffee whenever they see her approach (based on my true story)

Roy would be one of those people who goes clubbing every other week and every time he tries to drag the rest of the heap trio and Egan almost always goes and Dani would go if she didn't have a good excuse but always begrudgingly. anyway Roy would always be the only one having a good time until Egan gets drunk enough to start having fun

MR-SN and AS-TR start a stargazing club together. other notable members include AS-TR's girlfriend E-DN, MR-SN's friend C-RA (the one who always volunteers to carry the heavy ass telescopes) and MR-SN's friend K-LB who he pestered into coming to fix one of the wonky scopes even though K-LB's actually in electrical engineering but he's the only engineering person MR-SN (an arts student) knows

oh and of course VR-LA joins because he genuinely just likes space (developing a crush on his club chairperson was not on his bingo card)

Kyana and E-DN were MMA sparring buddies at one point which is how she found out about the stargazing and joined immediately

Since the history of Y/N stories, the reader ALWAYS had a backstory. I fail to see how this suddenly makes Y/N a OC. The same goes for gender. Usually in the description or first sentence you would immediately know Y/N’s gender. It’s nice to be inclusive but you can’t force the author to cater to a specific demographic.

I will admit though: I LOATHE when a author enforces a skintone onto Y/N without mentioning it in the beginning. The fact this stuff is rarely tag is pretty annoying. If authors have to tag their fanfic with “POC!Reader” to point out that reader is meant to have a ethnic background, for the love of god please do the same if the reader is meant to be interpreted as white. Nothing puts me out of a story when I envisioned a character to fit the story only to see them described as “pale, fair skinned” by the narrator several paragraphs later.

There is a really nice plugin for AO3 where it can replace pronouns and fill in the Y/N slot with an actual name. It would be nice if such a plugin existed for tumblr. Authors won’t have to give into obligations and those who feel alienated can still enjoy the work.

EXACTLY, like especially for authors who do long fics or series, giving reader 0 personality/no background story is next to impossible unless you just want them to like ... be there and take no initiative in the story and just have things happen to them and for them to have no reaction to anything. like even in smut and headcanons, there are going to be little things you can pick out personality-wise, its next to impossible to just have a cardboard cut out reader for any type of fic, much less long fics/series. someone will always disagree with something <- but tee explained this all better in her long rb addition to that post

AND I TOTALLY AGREE! like they had very valid points about physical appearance and properly tagging gender, but i hate the fact that they added all of those valid points in that mess of an argument of why "x reader fics" should have no personality or background, because i felt as if it was totally taking away from that. it's two totally separate issues that they were trying to combine into one big one but just made an even bigger mess out of it.

for real! ao3's tagging system is top tier like i know a lot of people find it confusing but it's so nice to be able to filter any and everything you want or don't want.

Successfully talked about bugs to 3 of my coworkers today (one of them told me to say some things I liked about moths because I said I like bugs a lot [as an aspiring entomologist] and I started talking and couldn't wouldn't stop). Successfully transitioned to talking about ants after another coworker said "this is awesome it's like National Geographic, how do you know this" which was exactly the point where I informed them all that I am an aspiring entomologist who wants to focus on hymenoptera (ants, bees, and wasps) with a special interest in ants and THAT was the point where I went on a long tangent about honeypot ants because I feel like they are one of the best gateway ants to introduce to people who dislike ants.

Anyway, the initial coworker was clearly regretting ever asking me any questions. The National Geographic coworker seemed ecstatic, and the 3rd coworker was just sort of along for the ride due to proximity
