She tapped the play button to start the short video of two very flamboyant street-performing Germans garishly outfitted in sparkling purple suits and holding up a fluttering sheet of gold lamé in front of a group of people who were obviously scattering away behind it, all set to the drama of the ‘Baby, baby, baby!’ refrain from Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”. Once the two ripped the sheet down, the people gathered around the street clapped at the couple’s triumphant gestures for the 'disappeared' as if it were the greatest magic trick ever performed.

Here's a random sneak peek of book 2 for you:
There's a thing people say. You've probably heard it countless times.
"You don't truly appreciate what you have until it's gone."
It's true. It's such a cliche thing to say, but it's true. I should know.
Hell, I have known. My entire life has pretty much been a masterclass in this concept. Gaining things, losing things, and constant regret and despair at the idea that you can never get said things back.
That's the thing about life. Everything about it is completely irreversible. It just keeps going forward. You can't turn the clock back, undo or reset. Get a second chance at anything. Not until we finally invent time travel, anyway. You are stuck having to do everything right in the moment, whether you know what the "right" thing is or not, because you'll never get that moment back. Just moving forward in this chaotic ongoing journey... until the journey inevitably comes to an end.
All that to say... I really should know better by now. And yet, here I am. Making all the same mistakes as I usually do.
He's gone. We're done.
On the one hand, I can't believe it's actually over now. After everything we've been through together...
But on the other hand, I'm almost surprised it didn't happen sooner.
We had a talk. I said some things. He said some things back.
I say "some." I actually mean "tons." He had a lot to say. Many, many words, mainly harshly cutting ones. I won't repeat those words here; they're painful to even think about. And I probably deserved them, but still...
Now, he's gone. I haven't heard from him since he left, and it seems like neither has anyone else.
I didn't know how good he was until he left. How good he was for me.
I always knew I loved him. I always knew that he was the right choice. I needed him. But I didn't realise just how much until now.
He's gone, and it's all my fault. Everyone else thinks so, at least, and they have all gone out of their way to make their feelings on the matter perfectly clear to me.
I agree with them. I can't blame others for my own terrible choices. I honestly have nobody to blame but me.
From the beginning, I knew that it was wrong. It just felt like the only way at the ti
No. No more excuses. That's why you are where you are.
I've just got to deal with the fact that everything is ruined now... I ruined everything.
And it'll probably take a long time for things to go back to some degree of normal.
Like forever.
___
Kind of sad, I know. But it's important plotwise.
So much happens in this sequel, guys. It's way darker, suspenseful and dramatic lol. But there's plenty of nice stuff, too. Don't worry :)

"Metro Subterranean" is a 4 band split recently released by San Francisco based label/store Dark Entries Records. I was introduced to the label years ago when I bought both Lives of Angels reissues. We also posted about the Sad Lovers & Giants reissue.
The album starts with Bastidas, a more recent band (started in 2007 and apparently still active). The next three bands - UltraViolet Catastrophe (UVC), Pink Stiletto, and Nervous Gender all are from the late 70s and early 80s.
Post-punk, goth and disco sounds can be found her. UVC hit me most immediately due to their minimalist sound reminiscent of Young Marble Giants.

so you know the UVC lights used at the crypto bro event in Hong Kong? experts have reviewed footage and photographs of various parts of the venue and overwhelmingly it looks like the stage lights were regular LED lights... but the ones in the bathrooms were UVC. makes a lot more sense why only some of the attendees experienced the awful burning pain the next day; not all of them used the bathrooms while they were there.
this does make it awfully suspicious in that an ignorant person might deliberately install "germ-killing" lights in a bathroom, a place with lots of germs. it's possible this was no accident or simple switch-up of bulbs.

Note: I don't own any Far-UVC technology at this time but I am considering to do so in the future. When buying Far-UVC you have to take note of a few important points: Power. Far-UVC needs a lot of power to be effective. 3W - 5W is not going to cut it for that space, let alone the air surrounding you. Distance. You need to maintain a safe distance from the device. This is dependent on the power of the emitter. Your eyes and skin need to be about 50cm away from the emitter. Time. Ideally you cannot be exposed to it all the time, some say you should only expose yourself to Far-UVC for up to 5 - 8 hours. Potential air pollution. Far-UVC has the potential of creating air pollution within a poorly ventilated space. The place which you're using it should have good ventilation to reduce the chances of that happening. Safety. It's very important to vet the product for safety. Ask the manufacturer for information on the emitter. Emitters without filters should be avoided as it could cause health problems. Multiple better than one. If you're trying to disinfect an entire room, it is more effective to have multiple low powered devices spread out throughout the room, than to have a single powerful one at the center because the emitters have limits in coverage. Cost. Far-UVC is very pricey with one exception (see link in point 2 below). With that out of the way, some positives: Far-UVC is much more powerful than HEPA air purifiers, but you need something that is powerful enough. Like I said, a single 3W - 5W emitter alone is not going to cut it for that space, let alone the surrounding air. In a study, five Far-UVC lamps in a 14m2 room achieved over 180 ACH (air changes per hour), something extremely difficult to achieve with ventilation and HEPA filters. From my calculations, four Far-UVC lamps (https://cybernightmarket.com/products/mini-far-uvc-lights-set), each powered 3W (total: 12W) and spread out throughout a 14m2 room, would be able to achieve 20 ACH. I'm waiting for actual test results to verify whether these calculations are correct in real life. A few final points: Similar to HEPA air purifiers, Far-UVC emitters may not be able to create a "protective bubble" or 100% disinfect the surrounding air because ACH is dependent on the total volume/area of the space the HEPA air purifiers and Far-UVC are operating in. So even if you were using the four Far-UVC lamps that provide a total of 12W, they will not be very effective in disinfecting the entire plane and the potential benefits of disinfecting surrounding air (aka protective bubble) should be considered minimal. The biggest issue with Far-UVC in my opinion is safety. You don't want additional health issues arising from misuse, so you need to always make sure you are within a safe distance from the emitter and not exposed for an overly long period of time. If you want to have a peace of mind without going through these mental calculations then it's just better to stick to portable HEPAs for now until we understand more about Far-UVC. So you have to take note of points 1 and 2 when using portable HEPAs and portable Far-UVC in settings like planes, that they are unlikely to be very effective at disinfecting surrounding air. Just use it as an additional layer of protection

If you're doing it inside an HVAC box you can just use UVC that is too long a wavelength to generate O3 but short enough to mess with biological stuff. But this includes human skin/eyes so it can't just be a lamp shining where there are people around. (it can be a lamp that's only lit when the room is empty though)

The UV portion of the radiation that is emitted by the Sun is down as the solid line in Fig. 3.3. (...) Ozone is the species responsible for intercepting these UV photons but, as shown in Fig. 3.3, it has a relatively small absorption cross-section in the UV-B wavelength range and almost no ability to absorb UV-A radiation. (...) As we have seen, ozone absorbs radiation with wavelengths between 200 and 315 nm (Fig. 3.3) with maximum absorbance near 255 nm. (...) If the curve for ozone in Fig. 3.3 was extrapolated to 1123 nm, it would be seen that the absorption cross-section is very small at that wavelength.

Don't Skip the Sunscreen When It's Cloudy
There’s one persistent myth that often slips through the cracks: “You don’t need sunscreen on cloudy days.” It’s a notion that’s been passed down through generations, whispered in changing rooms and beachside conversations. Yet, as we dive deeper into the science of skincare, it’s becoming increasingly clear that this age-old belief is nothing more than a dangerous misconception. Now, it’s time…

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on who you are) the type of light coming from those does not cause permanent eye damage. Basically, the same way UVC light can burn the surface of your skin, it can (and will) do the same to the surface of your eye. It’s basically like sunburning the top layer of your eye. Usually, what happens is that the effects will go unnoticed until the night the person goes to sleep, in which case, they’ll wake up feeling like there’s fiberglass in their eyes. This is a common condition among plasma welders when welding without proper vision protection. It is temporary and will go away, eventually. It just takes time to heal and feels absolutely horrendous while you have it.

🟣 I checked Twitter by chance and was lucky enough for one Naomi was kind enough to sell her remaining uvc lamps and that I came across Nukit's tweet mentioning this. I was able to buy and want to do an unboxing when I receive it to give my support 🩷
I've been sobbing. It feels like a dream. I am definitely going to cry again in therapy today. I can go to my doctor's appointments again. I can access healthcare again 😭 This isn't the first time Naomi has helped me. The info she's shared about covid kept me informed and safe. She's helped me survive. She deserves everything 💐
Unboxing video / review to come 🩷

OK SO this is like 60% the topic of my dissertation
(which I submitted like 2 days ago go me!!!)
BUT as @fallenangelvictorious said UVC are disinfecting wavelengths between about 200-300 nm and are really not a good time. Here is an article from 2008 where a bunch of medical students experienced serious side effects after exposure to a surgical disinfection lamp (254 nm) after only an hour!!. Now, recent studies have been looking into something called far-UVC which are wavelengths between 200 and 230 nm which seem to be non-toxic while still being antimicrobial. HOWEVER these are being marketed for use in events like these BUT some aren't filtered properly!! One study in people found that a lamp already on the market was inducing serious pre-carcinogenic markers which they thought was probably due to poor filtering of the light produced.
Now, the UV lights used here may well be these lamps, something like the SterilRay that the study I talked about before looked into. And, because these are events and whatnot and not scientists, they haven't got optical filters because those are not yet commercially available.
Anyway, all this to say, this is insane and something various people have been warning about for a while and something I have spent many hours ranting to my supervisor about because it felt like a matter of time. None of this is the attendees fault, and probably not even the event organisers because a lot of these companies say that this stuff is safe, and then don't make the research behind that accessible (even with university level access to paywall journals).
Please wear sunscreen and be so so so careful around UV, especially if anyone starts talking about UVC sterilisation - just get out of there, most sunscreens don't protect against UVC because it doesn't come through the atmosphere.
stay safe and I hope these people recover quickly because this is insane and they could probably sue.
So... a bunch of NFT grifters threw a party in Hong Kong this weekend and reportedly a bunch of attendees are now at risk of permanent eyesight damage because the promoters used unsafe lighting, and people are going to the ER...

*Side-eyes everyone who stopped masking because of this snake oil*
As much as I like scientific catharsis, I wish people wouldn't give into hopium so easily. There have been no long-term studies on this wavelength and the human body, and there are several studies showing they aren't as safe or efficacious as sales pitches would lead us to believe. This is the latest one.
