V9C7 Aftermath ◇ Denial

Ruby rubbed her eyes as she kept running. It wasn't until she tripped on a stump that she did stop running, though her crying seemed to double down. Gripping the alien ground in her fingers, she raised her hands to her head, ready to strike herself for her childish actions. After all this time, all she's been through, and nothing's changed! Nothing! Nothing! NOTHI-

"Hey."

Ruby turned to see Jaune jumping down from Juniper. He walked closer, not the least bit angry, and then kneeled down. Ruby had a breakdown in front of this guy, wherein the two started screaming at each other. Well, she was yelling at her friends, her sister, and him while Jaune roared his frustration out on her.

"You doin' okay, Crater Face?"

"I'm fine." Ruby growled.

Jaune was about to snap at her again, but then thought better of it after remembering how they got to this point. "Are you sure?"

Ruby was quiet. Jaune sat down from his kneeling position and let out a sigh. A part of him wanted to put an arm around her shoulder, but he thought better of it. He'd been doing that a lot lately, and it was because of Ruby. Even now, she was helping him be better. Now, it was his turn.

"You know," Jaune started.

"Don't." Ruby finished. "Just don't. I messed up. I've been messing up. And no amount of 'good job's is going to make it any better. I ruined your life."

"Yeah. You did." Jaune nodded, making Ruby flinch. "I mean, that's what I thought at first. And a part of me wants to yell at you some more."

"Then why don't you?" Ruby asked.

"Because five people yelling at one girl just isn't right."

"Five people?"

"Yeah. Me, Weiss, Blake, Yang, and you."

"Wait, what?" Ruby shook her head. "You were the only one yelling at me."

"Was I?"

"Yes!" Ruby stood up, turning away. "I mean, you definitely were, but..." Ruby shook her head. "Blake wasn't yelling, and Weiss wasn't either. Yang got mad, but she didn't yell."

"What about you?" Ruby turned to him. "Were you yelling at yourself?"

Ruby went quiet again. All this time, she'd felt like everything was just one big adventure after the other, but she'd never taken the time to really think about herself. Now, here she was, living a literal fairy tale, just like the ones her mom and her dad and her sister would read to her, and she felt... nothing.

"Ruby?"

"I... I need a minute." Ruby said. "Alone." Without another word, Jaune stood up and turned to leave. "Oh, and Jaune?" The stopped. "Thank you. For not giving up on me."

"You never gave up on me, Ruby." He said. "Even when I was giving up on myself."

With that, Jaune left on Juniper, and Ruby stood there, admiring him for a moment. Jaune had always been there for her, just as she'd been there for him. Where Jaune failed at being a leading huntsman, Ruby helped him find his stride. And now, when she was failing at being herself, Jaune was there to help her off the ground. He always was so kind. And sweet. And handso-

Ruby shook her head. NO! Focus! This wasn't the time to fall on old habits! Ruby had to figure herself out, not start crushing on her best non-bestie best and first friend of friends! Ugh... Was she always that sappy and childish?

Suddenly, the dim glow of a house caught her attention. A mansion. Painted pink and white and brown. Ruby gritted her teeth and took hold of her weapon. She can worry about schoolgirl crushing later. Now was the time for Ruby to grow up.

Like RT is just gonna pull another one on us and reveal that Jaune is a descendant of Salem, and only he can stop her, but try to disguise it as team RWBY being the heros!

Take a shot every time they mention Jaune in the V9 commentary.

Like it’s crazy how much they get a fucking Jaune boner in V9C7

Chapter 7

Still haven't skipped an intro, Casey is doing amazing this volume.

Wow, the subtlety is out.

The idea of him talking to team RWBY dolls for years is hilarious.

Little is sooo cute with that face full of food.

Everyone is so fluid at the little cafe, the animation is great this volume.

Once again the tree is referred to as a character and a person not a tree.

Ohhh nothing you say? I Think Not.

And yeah jaune has definitely gone nuts, his outburst confirms that.

And neo attacks, and i feel like something was cut there from what Wiess said but oh well, fight scene is awesome.

That knight and knight action, the bee tag team, the punch cut *chef's kiss*

Wiess getting launched wow.

And then the problem.

That clock of crescent rose was so juxtaposed I love it.

well power upgrade confirmed.

But that fight was great, my favorite this season. Every beat was matched, each character got enough time, we saw some crazy combos, and Wiess got yeeted like team rocket. Not having ruby in the action leaves a lot of room for other stuff, kinda like it from a visual standpoint.

So ruby's PTSD: yeah that's a thing. And 

And jaunes scream and ensuing breakdown. 

Ruby's losing it yeaaaaah.

This outburst into everyone's faces, i think we're seeing what should have happened in apathy way back in V6. But it's a little strange ruby's just been playing off the bees, after her comment earlier. But then jaunes Talkback, like he's not wrong and i think it's okay he's treating her on more his level, like he's obviously way older than them now, but he's not matured at all, he still sees them as his equals deep down, and he still goes for her, even if he does apologize afterwords.

But let's break that down; Lindsay did a great job btw.

So she goes straight to Wiess, with Jaune and home, then the bees, and the rebuttal from jaunes the height difference the framing of the tears.

Ruby yooooo. 

The shut up, the deeper voice,

The look on everyone's face, blakes ears God it's a good scene. 

And then she flipping flies out.

And the sinking paper in the background.

The concept art for this one looks amazing, this was a really cool location and as much as the paper pleasers were short lived, they funny enough filled Their place in the exposition, and the integration of tales of ever-after stuff Is welcomed.

Okay so in light of the latest episode, I've now started cooking a "Penny Lives" AU that also allows Jaune and Ruby's arcs to develop they way they have in canon in canon so far cuz I do like the direction things are going. Obv depends a lot on what happens in the last 3 chapters and there's still tons for me to iron out, but here's what I've got so far:

Instead of killing her, Jaune continues to try healing Penny while Weiss fights Cinder.

Weiss gets knocked into the void.

Jaune stops healing and fights Cinder out rage and desperation.

Meanwhile, Penny uses the strength she has left to crawl to the edge and fall into the void (because she assumes that's death).

Cinder tries to grab her but Jaune manages to stop her with his shield disc.

Since Cinder already has the relics, she has no reason to stay and fight, so after Salem screams she just taunts Jaune a bit and flies off.

The rest plays out pretty much the same, Cinder deletes the Central Location and Jaune can't make it to the door in time.

Penny lands on her own in the Ever After, realizes she's alive but fading quickly, and decides to encase herself in the same crystal stuff her swords are made of as a means of self-preservation.

The rest (mainly figuring out where/when RWBY find her) will have to wait until we get the volume's conclusion. I also gotta work out how to get Winter to Vacuo alive, cuz I really don't want her to die but becoming a Maiden reeeaaallly saved her ass lol.

Ruby V9C7: Oh SUUURE, Blake and my sister get to work out THEIR feelings for each other, meanwhile I have to listen to Afterans talking about "merging" with the tree as my friends debate whether it means death. SO COOL you get to be here with each other when I might never see Oscar again and even if I DO by that time who knows how far along they'll be merged? I JUST WANT NORMAL GODDAMN KNEES AND A NORMAL GODDAMN CRUSH

Finally watched the v9c7 and I’m so close to writing an essay about Ruby and Yang and how yang is in fact an amazing sister and disguising it as a fanfic

So, I've been thinking about how to appropriately word this since the end of Volume 9, and I'm still not sure if I'm gonna get this right, but here it goes... I wanna talk about how Ruby deals with negativity.

To start I want to say that I in no way think that there are no inherently negative ways to deal with negativity in life, my past struggles with substance abuse and self harm speak to that, but I do not feel that Ruby's way is inherently negative... just the way she approaches it.

Ruby seems to prefer to take any negative feeling and put it neatly in a box, adding more and more until the box bursts (as seen in v9c7) never taking the time to work things through with the help of her family and friends.

Even with Ruby's experience with the Tree, I highly doubt this method is going away any time soon, changes like that takes time, but I do think she'll feel more comfortable talking with people rather than just packing that box full and pretending it doesn't exist.

But the box existing brings up an interesting possibility, weaponizing it against the Grimm.

With Grimm being attracted to negativity, Ruby could always just open the box to draw the Grimm away from more vulnerable individuals, like moths to a flame.

We've technically already seen this happen, back in Kuroyuri when Ruby opened up to Jaune, just cracking open the box, it was enough to draw the Nuckelavee to them.

Imagine, RWBY and Co in the sands of Vacuo looking out onto a swarm of Grimm and Ruby just opens the box and the Grimm all turn on a dime and come to them... allowing our heros to fight, Ruby to use her silver eyes or both.

Just a thought

Okay, totally random thought while I was watching the OP (I always watch OPs unless they’re particularly awful. It’s a compulsion idk) but I think it’d be hella cool if the blacksmith was Alyx. Whether the real Alyx isn’t the one who made it out or she came back for whatever reason (not dying ever is appealing to some, I hear), it’d be a neat twist

I’m not into 3d animation, so I can’t say a whole lot, but are the textures supposed to be this... weird? Last episode I said Jaune’s house looked like a ps2 game and it just keeps going

“I’m late! I’m late!” Okay, that’s a decent Alice in Wonderland nod. Not overdone or wink wonked, which can be annoying to those who don’t know the joke (man, I should watch Shrek again. The first two movies are masterpieces)

Wait, was that a dammit? Jaune canonically swears now. Huh

“Right on time.” It’s obviously not a time loop so what does this mean? Did the time fruit do more than just send him back in time but gave him even more of a spotlight in Wonderland? He’s a rusted knight, he’s the white rabbit, he’s murbling like he’s the mad hatter; what next, is he gonna be Jesus?

“Hurry! People are counting on us.” Uhhh people counted on you to fight the jabberwock and y’all bailed like frightened horses. I wouldn’t count on you with my fingers, much less my life

PAPER TOWNS MY BELOATHED

Okay, so we’re being hit yet again with the “what are you” question, which wouldn’t be weird if it wasn’t just our protags being bombarded with it. Surely there are some critters who venture over into new areas? Or perhaps new life occurs every now and again? The repetition has been annoying for a while, but it’s venturing into just plain silly “-so that we may serve you.” What. Why. Kill me

While I do like the designs of the paper stars, I’m really not digging the vibes. Sorry stars, you will never be the plupples from the Hot Daga

Why is the team reacting so negatively to the stars being named after them? That’s genuinely fucking sad. Yet another instance of the show zooming by actual trauma for a cheap gag

Dude has spent who know how many years without a genuine personal connection, has been spending that time exploring the area and gaining its people’s trust, AND has shared his home with these people, yet when they talk to him about anything Wonderland related, they act like he’s saying he’s going to make them into shoes or something while having the audacity to be disappointed that he doesn’t have a solid lead on getting out. These girls are deplorable

Why are RWBY so lackluster about doing literal life-saving tasks while Jaune follows a hunch? You’re Hunters, that’s your job. Quit acting like life in Wonderland is beneath you because you don’t understand it jfc

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many different visual styles in a single show before. There’s the standard 3d, the color silhouettes (solid and textured), some microsoft paint scribbles, a few 2d stills, and now this children’s book style. Feels like an identity crisis

I understand Jaune’s perception of the tree, but I really don’t like how he overrides the autonomy of the villagers. If they’re literally willing to self-mutilate in order to leave, that’s probably a sign that you should let them go

Love how Weiss’s interest in Jaune disappears the moment he shows signs of mental illness. Gives me the warm and fuzzies *smash cut to me barfing in a dumpster*

“Because I can actually protect these people!” That is definitely a response to trauma that fits well with this narrative. Let’s see how MKEK fuck it up!

Jaune kills 2 jabbers in like 0.0003 seconds. Why in the everloving fuck did y’all have to run before?

I’m just realizing this is the first fight I’ve actually paid attention to. No idea why, but every fight previous my eyes have just glazed over. But I gotta say, I think the camera is way too close to the action. There’s definitely some interesting choreography going on but it’s hard to get a grasp on where everyone is at any point, and the bland environment isn’t helping. Go watch John Wick for some pointers

Unsure as to why Ruby is a) the only one apparently traumatized to the point of nearly 180-ing her character and b) why it’s specifically Crescent Rose/combat that triggers her. MKEK know how to throw bones but they can’t dish out any real substance

I thought Neo’s semblance was illusions? Pretty sure it’s called Imagination, which definitely implies it’s not a physical shifting ability. So, if the jabber-Neo had taken a bite of Ruby, would that mean Neo is chomping down? Would Ruby get stabbed with semblance glass? Or did the writers forget their own rules again?

ONCE A FUCKING GAIN WE ARE INTERRUPTED LITERALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF SOMEONE ASKING IF RUBY IS OKAY. WE ARE SEVEN EPISODES INTO A TEN EPISODE SEASON GET THE FUCK ON WITH IT

This “don’t ask me because I’m a leader” bit is really strange coming right off the several minute conversation about finding leads to getting home where not one person even looked at Ruby. Like, this was a request for supporting a platitude not a demand for a plan

“Why do I have to be the one to always pick people up?” First of all, no one asked you to, so jot that down. Second of all, bitch you have never been the sole sally sunshine, nor were you the only one helping others with emotions. Yang picked up Blake in V2, Jaune reassured YOU back in V4, Weiss talked to Yang in V5, Qrow comforted YOU in V7 and his main source of kindness was Clover (rip good boy). You’ve had your moments but don’t act like you’re the only one pulling emotional weight

Also, this voice acting is making me laugh I cannot take this seriously whatsoever

In this scenario, it does make sense why Jaune’s the one who snaps, but holy cannoli batman I cannot stop thinking about how much better Yang would’ve been in this position, especially after the group split in V8. Sure, that conflict was contrite to begin with and its resolution unmemorable (did it even resolve? I’m not subjecting myself to V8 again), but it’d be so much spicier if the family divide grew in absence

Skipping right past Ruby’s breakdown to focus on Jaune’s. Huzzah. At least his is more interesting and grounded than hers

I am once again asking if the team knows about Penny or if Jaune’s been keeping that juicy bit to himself. The way the camera focused on his mouth made it seem like he was about to confess, but it was a tease. I got narrative blue balls over here man, get on with it

Wasn’t it usually Yang who tried for positivity in dark times? Or did that get left at Beacon too? Blake’s supposed to be the realist, which maybe that’s what she was trying to do here but considering her track record I doubt it

And R leaves WBY behind! Please let this mean we can FINALLY focus on her shit and not cut away from it? And they better bring the cat back or Else
