Fro-yo girl here. It’s been so long since I’ve been to Los Gatos. The last time I went was to get froyo at Yumi Yogurt (RIP). Well, froyo brought me back to downtown Los Gatos. Easy Breezy opened last month in the heart of downtown Los Gatos. It’s the first Easy Breezy in the South Bay.

I visited recently and I’m happy to report that EB Los Gatos continues to serve the freshest, highest quality froyo – and it’s self-serve. I believe it’s the first self-serve froyo shop in Los Gatos. It’s certainly the only self-serve froyo shop in Los Gatos right now. The premium quality and cuteness really suit Los Gatos.

Their soft serve is hand-crafted and made with proprietary recipes. They use organic ingredients whenever possible. They also use the best soft serve machines, so their froyo/soft serve texture is better – thick, smooth, creamy, but not dense. And there are so many options: custard, yogurt, and vegan soft serve.

There were four machines serving 8 flavors. It’s self-serve like the other Easy Breezy locations. Toppings included warm sauces, candy, cheesecake, mochi, cookie dough, popping boba, fresh fruit (the blueberries and strawberries were organic), brownies, chocolate chips, yogurt chips, coconut, cereal, nuts, sprinkles, etc. I love the Belgian butter waffle cookies they have. It’s $0.94 cents an ounce. Yes, it’s not cheap but it’s Los Gatos and the product is high quality.

Flavors of the day:

Original tart: oooh, so good, quite tart and tangy, tastes like real yogurt, lovely thick, smooth texture

Vanilla bean yogurt: creamy, thick, yet not heavy, lots of visible vanilla bean specks, not super sweet, natural tasting

Root beer

Coconut crème pie (vegan, coconut milk)

Vietnamese coffee (vegan, coconut milk)

Strawberry Breeze (vegan, coconut milk): obviously made with lots of fresh strawberries, tasted very natural, could taste the coconut milk too. The texture was creamy and thick.

mordin: coffee ice cream, because he likes the taste of coffee but if he were to actually drink it he would spontaneously combust

grunt: those froyo shops that were everywhere in 2014 where you could make a bowl with like 5% froyo and 95% other toppings and it cost 14 dollars

hero hcs bc she deserves some rad facts of her own

- heros fave original anime (as in not a disney remake) is saiki k. she relates to saiki bc she too wishes to be an ordinary person w/o any special powers or destiny. saiki was also her trans awakening bc during middle school she read the manga and when saiki was able to just decide to switch genders she was like "why dont i just do that??"

- hero barely gets acne. shes actually been blessed w pretty good skin. but as soon as normal started getting acne, she subconsciously started developing a skin picking disorder out of anxiety thats left her skin looking just as bad as his (however she gets worried whenever normal takes too long in the bathroom and always tries to stop him whenever he starts to pick at his own skin)

- hero met erica and margarita through taylor and decided to introduce them to anime during the two months where margaritas dad was too busy watching anime w taylors friends so she could spite him. turns out she really really likes both these girls now. and they really really like anime (and hero too) now

- hero loves to accessorize. she particularly loves to collect hairclips and chewelry necklaces. shes also the one who taught normal how to make kandi

- hero is a decent driver but an awful parker. u can always tell which car is hers bc it will be super embarrassingly crooked. normal usually has to really squeeze in between cars when he gets out from the passenger seat

- hero is a big fan of funny novelty t-shirts. whenever shes not wearing something fandom specific u can bet that shell be wearing a shirt w some stupid text on it that she clearly bought on impulse

- hero likes to spend her tip money on little treats after every work day. sometimes even non vegan stuff bc she thinks she deserves a break every now and then (which is quite often for her). she always just lies and says work ran late

- hero actually prefers frozen yogurt over ice cream but would never admit that to her family. shell get ice cream when hanging out w others but takes herself out to froyo

- hero considers hermie one of The Girls and also treats her like a little sister (i mean they are siblings in law). sometimes she invites them to girls night or other things when hermie gets left out and gives him advice about her brother

- hero is a top student at her school and practically runs the stem program there (she wants to major in astronomy when she goes to college). she has the potential to be super good at pe too but purposefully doesnt put in her full effort so she can at least appear average at that

I have some trauma resulting from bullying, so I really hate it when people talk over me, interrupt, or otherwise ignore me. Even when I know it's completely innocent and non-malicious, it still takes a bit of self control not to get irritated and shut down. I also very strongly dislike people who brag about doing drugs regularly— largely because I watched my high school best friend self-sabotage by using drugs as a coping mechanism. Most of my pet peeves result from trauma... lmaooo

Flight to Vietnam (6/29-7/1) || Connie Tran (UCI)

Today’s the day! It didn’t settle in for me that we were headed for Vietnam soon until my older sister Amy had dropped off me and Elaine at Ontario Airport. It was a surreal experience seeing different faces, familiar and unfamiliar, from different chapters altogether in one place. Once everyone was present, we took our very first group photo together outside the entrance and headed in for check-in, which went much smoother than I thought. We eventually found the waiting area for our designated gate and killed time by exploring the shops around the airport and playing games with each other. The most memorable moment for me during that time was finding a machine that made frozen yogurt. Rakesh decided to try it and ordered a $6.50 froyo with oreo toppings…except all he got were pepper flakes (miniscule oreo crumbs, probably the machine ran out of the topping). It was a very tragic moment. I also learned how to play the “Spot it!” game that Calvin brought and my brain could not keep up with everyone’s quick plays. We then boarded the plane to Taiwan, which was a very long 13 hour flight of sleeping, eating, and playing games. The vegan plane food was honestly much better than the last time I had it when I went to Vietnam 7 years ago. Although there was no wifi on the plane, I was able to find a chat function on the plane’s chair screen where we could input a seat number we wanted to start a chat with. Calvin was my neighbor for the flight so we entertained ourselves by messaging different 14gers that we knew the seat number for. Unfortunately, my screen froze at some point, but I was still able to view Calvin’s chat, where they somehow formed a groupchat to make comments about the airplane food. I also was able to test my family’s old digital camera that I revived and decided to bring along for the trip. Once we got to Taiwan, we rode a metro to our waiting area. We also took advantage of the 2-hour layover to explore the airport and find the Starbucks there. I ordered some drinks along with some other 14gers and it was really good. The airport itself was also really cute and had many different rooms and artwork across different boarding waiting areas. There was also a screen where we could turn our selfies into fish. I sat with Jeffrey and Rakesh on the plane to Vietnam this time from Taiwan. Compared to the 13-hour flight earlier, the 3-hour flight to Vietnam was lightwork and we finally arrived at our destination. We were met instantly with hot weather and humidity despite barely stepping into the airport. I was immediately reminded of the last time I was in Vietnam. While waiting in line, my little & future UCI sponsorship chair, Nina, appeared out of nowhere! She was already in Vietnam with her family for vacation before we came, and I wasn’t aware that Elaine let her know that we arrived in Vietnam. Her aunt had some connection with one of the visa officers and Nina picked me along with some other 14gers to bypass the line and enter the area for baggage pick-up quicker. It was a little stressful looking for all of the MEMO boxes and luggage, but eventually we were able to get everyone together and got picked up by the bus. To the hotel we go!

Menchie’s, 3808 W Verdugo Ave, Burbank, CA 91505

Fro-yo girl here. Menchie’s moved within the same shopping center and opened at the new spot on February 11, 2023. It took over a year for the build out. They built it themselves and kept the tiled wall and other elements of the previous location. The shop looks great – cute and cheerful with lots of images of Menchie and his friends, the green circular tile wall, and Menchie’s green and pink all over.

There are 14 self-serve flavors a day. Froyo and toppings are $0.65/oz. They also have froyo cakes and sell some Menchie’s merchandise. Sample cups were left out on a big circular tray. I didn’t see any waffle bowls (many Menchie’s locations make waffle bowls). They have sauces (chocolate shell), candy, cookies, cereal, coconut, fruit, cheesecake, nuts, chocolate chips, marshmallows, popping boba, etc.
