I can't be the only one...

who felt like it was implied by the show that lightning bending was somehow a more "evil", "impure" or "cruel" form of bending in line with what bloodbending was made out to be, based on who we know was skilled enough to do it (Azula, Ozai, likely "past" Iroh). Am I?

I feel like that definitely could have been a bias that they chose to lean into, based on what we learned up to and past the point of lightning bending's introduction as well as bloodbending's.

Hama being an unforgiven-antagonist to the Gaang means that bloodbending was going to be framed as an especially awful form of combat from the start. (A form that seems to get implicitly compared in-show to a physical or spiritual violation.) Likewise, Iroh describes lightning bending as "cold fire".

Lightning? Cold? The surface of the sun would beg to differ.

The previously mentioned three from the Fire Royal Family are also the only ones we see and know of doing the skill. Two of them are show antagonists (Azula, Ozai). The other technically starts as an antagonist but eventually becomes someone that we're now supposed to believe views his past self as though they would have been a wrongful enemy of the Gaang and of world peace itself (Iroh). Meanwhile our poor, good-hearted, awkward turtleduck (*snickers*) Zuko, just can't seem to learn how to do it. Even when the time period of LOK comes, he's implied to have still not learned how.

Also, if we are to assume that no forms of firebending were looked down upon in Fire Nation culture, especially post-dragon extinction, then it makes even more sense that a form of firebending that's "harsher" wouldn't be disapproved of and would even be preferred over other forms for that very reason.

Now if true, that leaves the question of "what makes it worse than other forms of firebending?". I'd argue nothing, really. It seems, at worst, to only be faster and more deadly than other forms of fire bending. Like icebending compared to regular waterbending. A cherry on top for Azula seems to be that she looks fantastic and elegant when she aims her fingers at someone/something, and for Ozai, that he can prepare his shots extremely fast.

Of course, it could also have been the other way around and it was the characters that learned the ability who were having something implied about them, not necessarily the ability itself. Maybe even both.

I hate the fact that bloodbending was demonized and made illegal in LoK. Bloodbending could've been insanely useful in medicine, it could've saved lives. Just because something sounds creepy and has been used to hurt others, doesn't mean it's inherently evil or problematic. If a part of waterbending is considered "problematic" enough to be forbidden, why not ban all kinds of bending altogether? You could suffocate people with airbending the air out of their lungs (remember Zaheer from LoK?), you could burn people alive with little effort using firebending and hell, you could pulverize people into fine paste just using earthbending. Compared to these, death by bloodbending sounds rather quick and merciful.

I think it would explain a lot about them and how they act also. If someone told me Zuko had a kidney stone the entire show I would believe them. So When We See Hama’s Backstory, We Learn That She Was Taken From the Southern Water Tribe Over 60 Years Ago. There’s a Girl Who is Very Clearly Friends With Hama. A Girl Who Looks Remarkably Like Katara, With Her Hair and Even a Bit of the Necklace.

I Think It’s Safe to Assume That Hama and Kanna Were Friends Long Ago. Gran-Gran and Hama Are Also Very Easily Presumably the Same Age.

Master Pakku States That He Carved Katara’s Necklace for Kanna 60 Years Ago Before She Left - Placing Her in the Southern Water Tribe at the Right Time.

Blind Earthshaker Au

I wanna see a series rewrite where everything is the same except Percy is blind but can see better than everyone around him and has Katara's ice bending and toph beifong's Seismic Vibration Senses.

Like his dad is called the earth SHAKER so I don't think he can bend the earth too well but Percy is like feeling and making tiny vibrations/Earthquakes with his feet to see. He's super weak to air based projectiles think arrows. Or like literally anything a wind spirit picks up and throws in his general direction.

(He will tap his foot like an angry rabbit when hes stressed or caught off guard. I'm thinking wind spirits since they don't touch the ground OR have any water inside their bodies)

He can also "see" like where all the water is around him in a certain distance. Like mentally he has a 3d map of where things are. He doesn't like going places where theirs not a lot of water/or gorund. he can like tell when people are nervous by the speed of their blood flow/ the rhythm of their hearts. And is super precise with his ice bending be cuz of it.

Maybe Sally dies early or something and like we've got like 7 year old blind Percy wandering the streets but like since he can see where all the monsters are with his vibration earthy senses he can avoid them really well. Like "oh huh that guy has Hoooves? Nope. Percy outta here. Noo thanks." Since the mist is mostly sight based, and stuff, I feel like Percy would have a HUGE advantage.

In cannon it's shown that Percy is like really clairvoyant, what with all his dreams and stuff. So in my au he knows about the big three pact, and is just bullshiting people into thinking he's related to Khione goddess of snow and ice. And desperately trying not to let into the fact that he's blind.

(Luke/or/annabeth/or/Leo/or/Rachel/or Whoever he ends up being best friends with figures it out eventually be cuz theyve been friends for so long.)

At some point he runs into an 11yr old Luke pre- Luke meeting Thalia&Annabeth. And then we have them having the dynamic of Percy being a manic feral little shit and Luke trying to be responsible and protect him but ends up being the one protected all the time. I think it'd be funny.

Or maybe he runs into 7 year old annabeth and they become badass -cant be beat- besties. Percy snipe murdering every spider in a quarter mile radius, after he finds out annabeth is afraid of them.

I'm more partial to the meets Luke one cuz then when Percy and annabeth go on their first quest we'd get this fucking glorious scene:

Annabeth: no don't look Percy! You'll die!

Since Percy is blind he doesn't? Have dyslexia? I'm not entirely sure about how to explain this one. But like he's blind. People read things for him. (so he isnt effected by having dyslexia, becuase someone else is reading things for him.) He'd have good grades. Percy is sooo fucking smart. But like no one remembers cuz annabeth is always putting him down with all that doubt in canon. "Seaweed Brain!" I hate that nickname. Fuck canon annabeth. The one episode I am really excited about is the blood-bending episode. In the animation, it was terrifying and eerie and hands down my favourite episode and I cannot wait to see what the live action will do.

Thinking about what happened to the original bloodbender from Avatar the Last Airbender. Her ending was so sad after all she'd gone through. Also she clearly outs Katara as a waterbender in front of like the whole village and there were no repercussions? Chill villagers.

In LoK, there should have been a group of Southern Watertribe waterbenders that treated Hama as a war hero.

They would pop up in the background of season two as "dangerous radicals that hate the northern Watertribe," but when the Civil War started, they would be on the frontlines protecting their home and maybe even bloodbending in self defense.

Katara would have a complicated relationship with the because while she disagrees with them and thinks their ideology is dangerous, she would agree that Southern Watertribe culture needs to be protected and preserved.

So I was talking to my sister, and we remembered that technically Percy can control water, kinda of (like with Nancy & the fountain, and in the bathroom), so is he like a water bender? Like in Avatar: the last Airbender??? And if he is, does that mean he can also control ice?? Also, blood! Some of the waterbenders in Avatar can control blood. Can Percy also do that?!!?
