So my friend sent me this article, and I'm going to tell you why I think it's complete bullshit.

1) wishing us a happy Pride month is the BARE MINIMUM. As someone with her presence in the media and social influence, she could - and should - be doing SO much more than just wishing us a happy pride four days in.

2) "the singer has been an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community" not a good one. She seems to only remember us when it's convenient or benefits her in some way. Case in point:

2018 - "When it comes to feelings and when it comes to love and searching for someone to spend your whole life with. It's all just really really delicate. You know?" Taylor then performed her song "Delicate."

2023 - It’s painful for everyone, every ally, every loved one, every person in these communities.

In the first example, the intentional song reference comes off as extremely tacky. This is people's LIVES you're talking about. People are MURDERED for who they are and who they love (or don't love). This isn't an appropriate time to pull out the "oh-so-quirky" act and be cutesy.

In the second, the fact that she can't even center queer people in their own experience is so, SO telling. I promise, however painful it is for allies, it's 1000x worse for us to LIVE it. Allies don't have to wonder "am I going to get hate crimed wearing this?" before they leave the house - we frequently do. To not acknowledge that shows me that everything she says is performative at best.

3) I wouldn't call what she does "advocacy". She mentions us every now and then when it's convenient for her, profits off of us when we fit her marketing plan, and I've yet to find where she actually apologized for the homophobia in the original version of Picture to Burn. Also, she's real good friends with Travis Kelce's dad, who is a raging transphobe (and I bet his kids are, too). You don't get to call yourself an ally if you willingly allow the people around you to be violent bigots.

4) "always" is a strong word for someone who seems to show her support situationally at best. The full quote was "The way for that to happen is for us to continue to keep pushing governments to put protections in place for members of the LGBTQ community. And I promise to always advocate for that." Yet she doesn't do that.

5) what she speaks out, I've noticed that it's nearly always in the states that primarily agree with her. We don't see a whole lot of her "inspiring ally" speeches in places like Texas or Florida. But I've seen plenty of them come out of already notoriously queer-friendly places. If you aren't willing to face the heat of the difficult places along with the comfort of the easy ones, you don't get to call yourself an ally. Allyship is not easy. Anyone remember when Lady Gaga advocated for us in Russia, under threat of arrest, and her response was "arrest me, Russia! I don't give a fuck!"? Yeah, I've never seen even half that level of true commitment from Taylor.

6) STOP. MAKING. STRAIGHT GIRL SONGS. "GAY ANTHEMS"!!!! FFS it's such a slap in the fucking face of REAL, ACTUALLY QUEER ARTISTS that y'all keep calling these piss pathetic straight girl over produced crap songs "anthems". Fucking stop it. If they aren't queer, they don't qualify to be a queer anthem or icon. Start supporting ACTUAL queer artists with ⅛ this energy, for the love of FUCK. This bullshit pisses me off. Cuz this will also point to how much Lou is lying to himself about how betrayed Lestat really felt--that his death would be better by Lou's hands than Claudia's. Is Lou making himself feel better by giving Les the coup de gras, and thinking Les is grateful to him for it?

Cuz he's clearly scared to death that WHEN--not IF--they reunite, Les will be pissed and hate/kill him.

Cuz Lestat's love was what kept Louis alive--Lestat loving Louis saved/damned Louis' life. (The Merrick of it all, istg.)

So it's WILD that Louis thinks this. That the split second Louis finds happiness, the boogeyman Lestat will come and kill him, or take it from him--or just be there as a hallucination constantly reminding Louis of what he left behind.

Louis in denial as he tells himself choosing Claudia over Lestat was worth it. And Dream!Stat chanting "I do" like frikkin wedding vows, then choking on the words/vows as a vampire bat claws out of his throat--I CANNOT with this show anymore.

This is interesting--the 7000 people he killed in Eastern Europe were a necessary evil--Lou calls them "souls," when Les called them "the Meat" and Claudia called them "Kill Juice." And in Paris he only kills once every other day. They ALL feel like murder to Louis. But Louis KNOWS he never killed Lestat!

He put Lestat in the dump the same way Grace put his name on that tombstone--it's the DISTANCE that's killing them.

It's separation & absence, which they HOPE will make the heart grow colder--when we all know that's not how the saying actually goes.

I really loved them making Helaena a dragon dreamer in s1 because i thought it would give her more relevance in the story since her arc in the book was too depressing and passive. Boy, was I wrong. Not only she has zero relevance and her screentime is reduced to minimum, but her dreams led to nothing. I mean, what's the point of that gift if she doesn't use it? Daenys saved targaryens thanks to the same gift so that's the proof destiny isn't always set in stone. However, with Helaena it's just frustrating. First there were riddles so I thought fine, maybe she can't interpret them correctly yet (the beast beneath the boards, the rats...) but that balcony scene with Aemond left me confused. I don't know how to interpret her behavior and thoughts in there. Aside from spoiling the God's Eye (lmao, condal is a moron) what were fer intentions? Was she angry on Aegon's behalf? I doubt it it since there was no deep connection or love between the two. Was she rejoicing at the notion of Aemond's death? Why would she just let him go to his death and do nothing? Does she hate him? Is she just too apathetic like Bran in s8 to care? Was she sad and defeated because she is aware of what Aemond has become (what Alicent also repeats over and over) but she still loves him? I seriously don't know what to think. Also ffs, , she appears in Daemon's vision to tell him about him fulfilling his destiny?? I can't express how disgusted I am that they chose her to do that. So, what's the point? And no, the explanation that she is this tragic cassandra figure who can't do anything to prevent certain events doesn't sit well with me because it seems lazy, overused and, like I mentioned before, there is Daenys' example. Do you have some other theories and interpretations of her character in general, but especially the balcony scene?

I can't even express just how much I agree with everything you said. And I really wish I could come up with some clever and intricate theory about the role Helaena is supposed to play in HotD (by the way, anyone who has thoughts on that matter and is willing to share them is more than welcome to join the discussion).

But as of now it seems like the writers did - and most likely will contunue to do - to her the same thing they are doing to the absolute majority of other characters (if not to all of them), namely using her as a tool to get across a certain point. The point in this case being, apparently, that men (and women supporting them) are evil, to put it simply (actually, I just got a wonderful ask regarding misandry in HotD and I can't wait to get to it later today).

And the lack of actual care about the characters is even more evident and striking with regards to Helaena due to the pathetic amount of screentime she got. It feels like the entire meaning of her character has been reduced to showing up for a few minutes to either gain some pity from the audience for the purpose of capitalizing on it later or to give the viewers a heads up on some future events (often in quite a dumb and out-of-the-blue way).

To be clear: just like in Aegon's case, I do not disregard Helaena's suffering, I just resent the way it's being used within the story. Like can you believe it? Her baby son was murdered practically in front of her - but apparently she feels no anger or hatred towards either two scumbags who actually did it or her dearest TB relatives because of whose actions it happened (even if we buy the "unclear instructions" thing). Moreover, she is showing Daemon, basically the murderer of her child, the way to fulfilll his destiny. But apparently she feels psychologically violated by Otto and Alicent making her endure the public funeral (which has been turned into nothing more than a propaganda show) and supposedly despises her younger brother to the point of wanting him dead, the reasons for it being... what?

Him starting the war by killing Lucerys? Are we supposed to believe, even after what Rhaenyra says to Alicent, that if not for Luke's death the Greens would be safe? Him burning Aegon? She does mention that - but just in the scene before she smiles approvingly at Alicent's proposal of leaving KL without giving a second thought to the fate of her brotherhusband and neither has she been shown visiting him - not once. Does she care for Aegon or not? Apparently, she does but only in the moments when it's necessary to explain her treatment of Aemond. Him wanting her to join the fight? Is she that pacifistic?

It really feels like the writers just needed to throw together a bunch of reasons for Helaena's behavior - and that's what they did. And as far as I am concerned, what the show did to Helaena is a character assasination - just probably not as brutal as one of Alicent, but the result is the same.

Isn't that the same lie he was telling to literally everyone for 400 years? You say it like he did it because he had something personal against her. It really shows how clueless all of you are for the matters of politics and ruling. Read a book ffs.

He didn't. He was actually a victim of one.

Or the fact that, in the Grishaverse, the very rules of consent are different. How can you or anyone put modern laws into a fantastical universe where people with magical powers exist and things are run differently? Each universe has its own setting, structure and rules. Why are you putting your contemporary ideals and ethics there? What are they even doing there in the first place?

I agree, he sought power. But as far as we know he never wanted power exclusively for himself. In RoW it was revealed that even the Fold was the result of him trying to stop the wars:

Wars ended and began again—and again and again. Grisha were not accepted; they were resented in Ravka and hunted abroad. Men fought them with swords, then guns, then worse. There was no end to it, and so he had sought an end. Power that could not be questioned. Might that could not be reckoned with. The result had been the Fold.

The amplifiers? To control the Fold and stop the wars.

The nichevo'ya? Used them to lower the losses of his army.

The throne? Unlike his predecessor, he seemed to be involved in paperwork, listening to his advisors, feeding his army and trying to deal with all the deserters from that army.

Actually we're trying to protect him from your stupidity and inability to read between the lines and past the narrative. And the Darkling has become totally evil in the eyes of this fandom because:

A) the narrative really did him dirty. Always talking about his atrocities and villainous actions.

B) the fandom is really clueless and stupid about the ways of leadership and ruling and I will die on this hill. You have NO idea how treason must be handled, or political intrigues are working and it shows from the very first second you open your mouth. "The Darkling scarred Genya!" Welcome to the world of "treason is met with consequences". "The Darkling lied to Alina!" Welcome to the world of politics.

Also, it's the double standards that kill us. You forgive Kaz for killing people for money but spit on the Darkling for doing it for a selfless purpose. You love Nikolai for trying to usurp the throne, but hate the Darkling for doing the same when he did it to bring a change to Ravka.

The Darkling was an anti-villain. Anti-villains are characters with a noble, sympathetic goal but the means to achieve it is through violence. And these characters are meant to stir sympathy towards the reader and are, almost always, tragic characters.

Now whether someone forgives his actions or excuse his character is always up to the reader.

But let's not pretend like the heroes did better. Or the fact that you probably wanted him to act like a forgiving, kind-hearted fairy godmother after one thousand years full of shit to the point that he broke, said enough and stood up against the violence and atrocities his people were suffering from. He decided to fight fire with fire and I find that understandable, just like the majority of his supporters in this fandom.

Jeez, this entire drawn out convo is embarrassing and done to death. BL is romance. It's bound to the same romance tropes as MF and FF, id-driven as many of them are. If you don't like how a male character is written, that just means you don't like the story; move on. A lot of romance and horror both function on the premise of "romanticizing" and "fetishizing" things that wouldn't be desirable in real life. Yes, horror movies do portray murder as something fun for the audience. That's why people like slashers flicks from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. It even became a trend that people would watch the intro of the slasher to see which teenagers are the most annoying, so it's fun when Jason or Freddy or Michael Meyers, or whoever kills them gruesomely. That's why we love the Final Destination films! That's why we like Saw! It's why we like The Evil Dead! It's why we like Wrong Turn! It's why we like Scream! Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Child's Play, Halloween! They're tropey horror slashers with elaborate, gorey murder scenes that become such spectacles of themselves that by the end of the franchises, there's so much blood and viscera that the scenes are parodies of themselves. They're beloved all over the world. And people cheer for the murders in theaters! People love cheering for Freddy Krueger and Michael Meyers, and Jason when they disembowl some 15 year old who was probably just off drinking illegally with their friends. People love cheering for them so much, that there're are crossover films so we can cheer as they fight each other. These are such well-known tropes in horror that they've become cemented in popular culture, so movies like Cabin in the Woods are made. It's popular, extremely so, and I don't know how someone can go 20 years of life and not realize this. Just like how people like reading Twilight wherein Edward basically stalks Bella. Women don't want to be stalked in real life, but they like Edward because it's just a story. No one wants to date a man like Christian Gray in real life, but he's hot in a story. No one wants a guy like Ryouma Ichijou in real life, but it's fun in a tropey BL. The audience is supposed to like him because they want the main couple to get together. If it's not your thing, just don't watch it and move on to something else. The world will keep spinning.

And a lot of people like stories from the antagonists' perspective because it's interesting. This doesn't appear often in things made for children because it's for children, so it has some small responsibility of modeling behavior... because it's for kids. Things for adults don't have all these restrictions because as an adult, you should be able to judge right from wrong in real life, so you can just relax and watch Hannibal Lector abuse and manipulate Will in Hannibal without having an existential crisis about the moral fabric of society decaying. If you can't handle it, you should leave the training wheels on because genre fiction for adults will not always hold you hand--because you're an adult, and you should have common sense to know "murder/sexual assault/stalking/harassment/etc is bad in real life." Children below the ages of 4-5 aren't supposed to watch things like Spongebob for this same reason: they can't tell the difference. If you're an adult, you should be capable of that much, at least.

BL studies is an established academic field that discusses and examines BL across the world in different media forms: manga, manhwa, manhua, anime, donghua, live action, etc. from different countries. Read articles from professionals. Learn about BL and geicomi since apparently it also has to be reiterated that the characters in BL--yes, even the thin, waifs--look like straight men in East Asia. They're ikemen. There are different stereotypes of what queer men look like all over the world, wild concept, I know. The stereotype of what gay men look like in E. Asia are chubby bears, like plumbers, or super ripped men, like the body types typically featured in geicomi, the stories made by men for a male target audience.

Yes, many popular youtubers/breadtubers say convertly puritanical talking points in their videos. Few, if any, actually have media literacy. And few are actually transgressive or nuanced in their discussions of fiction or fandom. If they were, Google wouldn't promote them. You should try reading up more about radfem/TERF theory to recognize these talking points. Everyone who thinks these things isn't walking around around with a neon sign. You should know, since you actually share many of their harmful beliefs, but I doubt you'd call yourself a TERF or a radfem. Read Nancy Friday books like My Secret Garden to learn more about taboo sexual fantasies are how normal they are.

Read BL studies articles to actually learn history, read some Nancy Friday books to get over this weird projection of morality and kink in fantasy, and actually listen when people are correcting you because there's decades if not centuries of research refuting all your "points." No one is saying you have to like these stories for yourself, but you do have to realize the world doesn't revolve around you, and other people will always like different things and that's fine. Pretty much everything about the Emperor. This is hands down the best written character of the game and the fandom treats him like an afterthought, when they don't take every single one of his actions or words out of context to paint him as way worse than he actually is.

The one that infuriates me the most is the circumstance of Ansur's death. I've seen people claim that "he killed Ansur because of his powerlust", girl I swear to god I turn into a fury, he was getting murdered in his sleep and defended himself, THE ✨FUCK ✨was he supposed to do (it doesn't help that after his confession the game doesn't allow you to give him a word of sympathy, well fuck you too devs I guess).

💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?

Shadowheart sucks. I'm sorry I know everyone and their dogs loves her but I really can't stand her mug. I understand what they wanted to do with her and I understand what's the point with her storyline but 1: stop acting like a girl who I had to convince with a d18 NOT TO KILL HER PARENTS is a perfect child who did nothing wrong, and 2: the game kept shoving her down my throat and I was so fucking done with her bullshit by the end of Act 2. Literally all of Act 2 is about her ffs, meanwhile the player isn't allowed to try and find a solution for Karlach's heart problem and Will doesn't get a plotline, no because every second of that game has to be about Miss I Want To Lick Shar's Pussy. Weakest female character in the game. Lae'zel is way more interesting and well rounded but she's "ugly", so I guess she doesn't get a pass for being abrasive.

💕: What is an unpopular ship that you like?

Emperor x Tav/Durge, especially Durge since there is the added layer of everything being Durge's fault, including Baldur being turned into a Mindflayer. The fact that the game allows you to turn into a Mindflayer to take the blame for Orpheus' death is *chef kiss*, and the fact that it allows you to stay with the Emperor post game is also very appreciated.

But apparently! Since no one is allowed to like the Emperor! No one cares about this ship either! I am in a world of pain!

#9 A tie between both Garu Master's Gift rooms (his OG SSR): Yes, I know MG room 5 is a repeat of Garu's main chapter H scene (which I also like because extremely horny submissive Garu??? my jam), but it's literally the only Karu H scene where he explicitly says he wants to be fucked by Eiden (after 10 minutes of tsundere angsting) and even tells Garu to stay away so he can get fucked. Like c'mon, even Edmond doesn't get that enthusiastic. MG room 2 is just- Garu/Karu's butt is great, top tier A+ perfection, and Aster has a great taste in booty shorts.

#8 A tie between both Ethereal Guardian Garu rooms: room 2- we finally get Garu giving a blowjob! Now we just need one from Karu too. Also, Garu's submissive desire to serve is just so adorable and horny. Room 5- sadly, we have not gotten enthusiastic Karu since the original MG room 5, but this is the only one where Karu is finally not "Goddammit why won't you let me top!" so it feels less dubcony than usual. #7 A tie between both Forgotten Fruit Garu rooms: Ok I know this is a lot of Garu rooms but I genuinely love all of those. I usually hate omegaverse, but these rooms transformed me and I think I finally started to like cat/dogboys and omegaverse. One thing I haven't mentioned about why I like these Karu's rooms is because he gets this wide-eyed "shocked" orgasm face, whereas almost everyone else gets ahegao faces when they orgasm. Room 2 has a great shocked Karu orgasm face, not to mention he's actually (unwillingly) horny for once. Room 5 is horny submissive Garu and I'm finally convinced why Eiden never preps Garu/Karu cuz he's the only guy I believe who would have a self-lubricating asshole. Another great thing about the FF rooms, is that we're finally convinced that Garu even without his memories still wants to be submissive to Eiden, so it's not like Garu has blindly following. And in both FF Garu and EG Garu, we see Garu/Karu in positions of power/taking charge of others, which normally we dont see from him. A lot of us know where Karu's character development will go but not sure where Garu will, but I think these are hints that Garu's character development is developing courage and growing his own backbone.

#6 A tie between both Elite Instructor Edmond rooms: Room 2, we get Eiden spanking Edmond and Edmond is tied up in a whip! So hot! Room 5, Edmond attempts to ride Eiden and I know I praised Garu/Karu's butt, but Edmond's butt is well-known for being immaculate as well. And this card, we get glorious views of Edmond's voluptuous booty. Also, I think I like Eiden's cheekiness with Edmond more than Karu, because I do believe that Edmond is a repressed tsundere & unwilling to admit his true desires, whereas Karu is not shy about his true desires; he just seems like he's being trampled over most of the time.

#5 A tie between Lakeside Spark Kuya room 2, Aromantic Exotica Kuya room 2, SR Kuya: Basically, Kuya using toys on Eiden- a blindfold + deepthroating, a ballgag + buttplug + collar, and a magic dildo. I already praised Garu's voice acting (and next I'll praise Morvay's), but Eiden's sex voice is almost as good as Morvay's, which makes sense since he's the protagonist and needs to be good. #4 Unique Mission Blade room 5: Ok I like this for a combination of porn ridiculousness and that it's almost as creative as Morvay SSR room 2. First up, finally we see the front of Blade's face! There's a running joke that we only see him in profile view, but this time it's the front. Second, ha. Only in porn, will you see someone trip into a hole, get stuck, and rather than their friend pulling the person out, they proceed to have sex instead. A+ choice, not to mention that they're supposedly trying to escape after being kidnapped haha. Also, Eiden gets the shocked orgasm face and you know how much I love the shocked orgasm face. And why this room is so creative, is there are scene changes! It's a hole in the wall situation and the animators managed to make this work because sometimes we see the wall and its just Eiden's torso getting fucked and sometimes we see both Eiden & Blade. Also if you pay attention to the sound design, Eiden's voice is a "inside a container echo" while Blade's voice sounds normal. THIS IS COOL. So it's like Morvay's SSR room 2, but advanced.

#3: Morvay SSR room 5- Ok so I'm just going to casually ignore that Morvay is saying "No" the entire time because this is fiction, this is fantasy, in real life this is violence and I think Morvay should definitely get the opportunity to charge Aster of r*pe/domestic abuse. However, because porn game logic, I think it's so so so absolutely cool & revolutionary that we get a twink femboy wearing a strapon fucking a much larger incubus. Also, Morvay's ahegao face and butt are sooo good. Also to everyone complaining that Aster is not trans and is using a strapon to deprive Morvay the satisfaction of a real dick or getting to eat... Aster literally shoves a bottle of Eiden's cum into Morvay's ass during this scene too. So he like technically kinda sorta fed him? Even if it was only the the aphrodisiac properties. (Which makes me wonder...um are Aster and Morvay just storing Eiden's cum randomly...)

#2: Aster SSR room 5- TENTACLE SEX TENTACLE SEX TENTACLE SEX!!! Except for both of Morvay's rooms, I think this is the MOST creative H scene in the entire game so far! Also, unlike in Morvay room 5, Morvay originally wanted to have sex with the tentacle anyways and once they get going, Morvay does kinda become just 1 horny braincell. And he gets a happy ahegao face more times in this room than in Morvay SSR room 5. Also, Morvay's voice actor!??!! He almost sounds like he's having real sex! I know it's fake, but its still so so close. Morvay's voice actor is wasted on a character who the devs barely give attention to.

#1: Morvay SSR room 2- HORNY INCUBUS SUCKS OFF EIDEN IN A GLORYHOLE ROOM. Also also, we confirm here that Morvay enjoys getting spitroasted! Which means threesome potential? And with all the other dicks in the room, and Morvay giving handjobs to 2 of them while sucking off Eiden, I think this is the closest we'll ever get to an onscreen orgy, unless the devs step up their game. Also on the art/animation side, I'm extremely impressed they were able to make a gloryhole room in a vertical mobile game. Normally a mobile phone screen should not be able to fit this, but they made it work. when did you join ? what made you join ? what do you remember from the plotlines that were current at the time ? where were you in life when you joined and where are you now ?

right at the beginning of 2016, around feb or march. i had just finished high school and took an off year to prepare for uni admission exams. i needed something to take my mind off studying for it and my friend julia suggested i joined her on tumblr rping. i had no idea what that was but she helped me through it and we joined another group together. at the time i also developed a bit of a thing for royals and made my character in that group an undercover norwegian royal, on some princess diaries bullshit. but looking up things for that group i decided to search norwegian royalty on tumblr and found the blog for a character in vik. olav if i'm not mistaken. i started stalking the group and got really interested in it and mentioned it to julia who told me she'd been here before and would join with me if i chose to so we brought barbie and biel. then the group closed and i completely gave up rping until one random day many months later i logged into tumblr again god knows why and there was a message from martha, she told me the group came back to life and i decided to rejoin. and here i am, haven't left since.

which characters have you written over the years ?

what is your favourite plotline that you've been part of ?

the zulu & the southern africa conflicts. even all of us applying together that day was such a moment, i loved every bit of it. i had so so much fun writing ayo even if he was one of those characters it is impossible to write filler threads with, i still felt so much joy when i got a notif that someone replied to him, even if the entire reply was someone hating on him hard.

what about other people's plotlines ?

it's impossible to pick one when you've been here from the start and have seen countless amazing ones but the english plot was truly a wonder, even the murder mystery event was fucking incredible. anything involving russia and the romanovs as well was so well thought and made so much sense when you put the pieces together you just can't help but love every bit.

who is your favourite character from the ones you've played ? why ? what made you love them ? what made them so fun to write ?

favourite to write i'd say ayo, for the same reasons i mentioned on the plotline question but if i had to choose only one to keep playing forever it would either be silje or ilija. i feel like those are versatile ones that i could go in different directions with if i'd wanted to. the one i had the most fun writing though was pedro for sure.

if you could relive a plotline, which would it be ?

the invasion in greece and i think everyone who was here for that would say the same thing. that was our most iconic event and for a reason, everyone put 150% into it and it worked out so so so so well we didn't even imagine the outcome it would have, we just wanted to traumatise everyone a bit but received the best event in hshq in return.

is there a plotline that you'd edit now if you could ?

i don't think there is, especially because i don't think i remember even half of them but even then everything was fun and a joy to write about so i probably wouldn't change anything.

what's a plotline you wish you would have been able to finish before closing or just write more of ?

the ones that never happened. e mentioned some of the things we planned and didn't happen on the timeline post but i assure you that's not even the beginning. at times we'd plan an entire year of events in advance and come up with a full story, reasoning, plot drops for it but when the time to have them came we forgot all about it and change everything to something we'd put together in 20 mins instead of the plans we spent days working on. even the cruise ship they were supposed to be stuck in was an idea we had so much fun coming up with and it didn't get to see the light of day.

what is your favourite ooc memory ?

every honesty hour chaos was such a fun time to be on the dash, or whenever something big would happen ic and there would be 100 ooc posts reacting to it on the dash and the jokes were the peak of comedy. but i'll always have a soft spot for the soletsky silent thread bc icb we actually had 40+ notes on that, it was priceless. the word lunch is stuck with me forever. AND that one time i got kicked out on this exact date a couple years back.

I think the closest we got with how Backdraft truly operated was the episode where they stole Liger and had Bit do a death match in the fiery arena, but even that was toned down. Agreed, yhea. The show made what nods it could to the appropriate level of severity. But people should be somewhere between concerned by and terrified of Backdraft. These are literally folks whose hobbies include trying to steal all of your shit while murdering you for entertainment. ffs. (which should honestly be kept in mind as I pull out all the tiny violins for the various characters and their problems. they are all some stripe of responsible for peoples' deaths and suffering and have decided that's acceptable.) I would hand-wring and be all "imagine raising a child in such an environment and how they'd turn out" but, well Backdraft actually has remarkably little patience for internal matters becoming corrupt. The org is massively profitable, and huge amounts of money changes hands constantly. It goes back to 'please see: people getting treated decently within the org' - not being put at a disadvantage to begin with, and being given some baseline level of trust reduces the impetus to steal. Honor among thieves and all that. This doesn't mean there's 0% internal corruption - just anyone engaged in such matters knows they'd DAMN well keep it hidden or they're dead. Because crossing the org is generally dealt with both quickly and lethally. a meandering aside: part of the problem BD has developed is like... an ouroboros syndrome. Yes BD deals with a variety of external forces, both ally and enemy, but their most profitable clientele by far are the insanely rich fucks who not only pay to see, but bet on 0999 battles, with carnage and casualty being heavily incentivized. but... y'see, most of those clientele are the descendants of the families who started Backdraft... and some of the old guard is quite aware of this and sees the creeping drain of wealth from older families who've lost touch with the past. So the main schism lies between those two groups. as for broader corruption... There are "some" high-ranking ZBC/ZBGF people in the Committee of Seven - and likewise some high-ranking Backdraft people on the ZB* governmental Council (which I don't actually have an interesting name for, I've always just called it 'the Council' in my head.) Only a handful of folks are aware of this: what they do is balance a perpetual game of cat&mouse to sustain a healthy level of perceived tension between BD and ZB*/law enforcement This isn't to say there aren't people genuinely against either side, on both sides - there are. they have no idea that a lot of what goes on is illusory. the majority of everything is run by a handful of people. What this fundamentally means: 1) The ZBGF/ZBC is corrupt at its highest levels and has been for a while. So is Backdraft. Part of the degradation of Backdraft into bloodsport mafia happened because a number of old-money families moved into these highest positions of power... and there doesn't need to be a resistance when they've already "won." But weakening Backdraft at all could put its consistent, obscene income at risk. Nobody wants to do that. (This is why Sara is in so much trouble with basically everyone. She became aware of this, declared it bullshit, and basically tried to buck off the ZBGF/ZBC for good... while setting the stage for 'improvements' of her own. She didn't succeed, but rocked the boat nuked the boat, and people are pissed.) 2) The above set of people absolutely do things like tighten rules in sanctioned battles.... to make them more boring so the unsanctioned battles become even more appealing. 3) Both sides actually have the equivalent of secret arms races and are actually trying to gain some kind of advantage over the other, while acting like they're sticking to their side of the "deal." And yes, they absolutely keep those records guarded. The problem is they've lost their shine over the time they've been kept and people have lost knowledge of what could be/is recorded there. Only history nerds - like Alteil - would bother looking into them
