Amber Nicole Thurman is dead because of Georgia’s extreme abortion restrictions.

She was a medical assistant, and a mother to a 6-year-old son and she’s dead because when she sought medical care after an incomplete at-home abortion, doctors legally couldn’t help her until her life was in danger.

Well, guess what. She grew sick, and then sicker, and then septic, and by the time the doctors were legally allowed to intervene, it was too late. She died. Her son lost his mother.

This is unacceptable. There is NO REASON why anyone in America should have to wait until they are halfway dead to receive medical care. These “life of the mother” exceptions are BULLSHIT, just like we’ve always said. Politicians and religious dogma have no place in our private medical decisions.

Propublica will report on the other confirmed death due to these laws in Georgia in the coming days. We will never hear from Texas, or Florida, or many other states who have changed how their maternal mortalities are reported. I am positive that Amber and her fellow Georgian are not the only ones who have lost their lives to these laws; the other women who suffered and died will never have their stories told.

I am sick at heart having confirmed what I already knew, that our American sisters would die for these extremists’ unpopular and medically irresponsible laws.

I hope Amber’s family takes some small measure of comfort knowing that we will NOT FORGET and we will NOT STOP FIGHTING FOR OUR RIGHTS TO OUR OWN DAMN BODIES.

I was looking through the 1860 US Census Mortality Index to find the reference to my ancestor. Every entry has name, age, and cause of death.

So many entries had ages of “1”, or “3/12”, or “5/12”. Just pages and pages of dead babies, usually dead of something everyone gets vaccinated for today.

He’s right you know. Remember in 2020 when Democrats won the trifecta and they used their new House and Senate majorities to pack the Supreme Court and admit two new states with Democratic senators?

(Oh wait, that didn’t happen. We did get a huge infrastructure package called the “Inflation Reduction Act” so nobody would notice that Congress can’t reduce inflation, so that part was good.)

Also remember in 2008 when Obama won and the Democrats had a filibuster-proof 60 members in the Senate, and they used their new majority to pack the Supreme Court and admit new states?

(Oops, that didn’t happen either. The filibuster-proof 60th Senator, Al Franken, had a long recount in a close election and was only seated for a couple of months before Ted Kennedy died. They managed to push through Obamacare, which was good, but couldn’t get the votes to make it Medicare For All.)

Anyway, maybe third time is the charm. I’d love it if the Democratic Party listens to Tim Walz, who had a narrow trifecta in Minnesota and helped push through a bunch of helpful things like free school lunches and free period products in schools.

Reagan has been dead for 20 years! His “The scariest words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help’” joke was never funny, and now it’s the only principle left animating the Republican Party. Leave him and his joke in the past. Do things to help people.
