Happy new year, I think Ice typing in pokemon should lose the rock weakness. I think it should also gain a resistance to grass and possibly water. I think it should also be super affective against water and have a higher chance to freeze water types with freezing moves. I think this would not break ice types but make them not as vulnerable as they currently are.
In conclusion
Gamefreak please do this

Shipped v2
Tumblr media
We have been playing Shipped for years now, and during that time, we have noticed some things that could be improved upon, but the game was done, the sales were low, and we were busy working on new titles. It doesn't make sense to get back to it, but... we just couldn't help ourselves! A part form a TON of small balance and fixes, these are the biggest changes and additions to Shipped with this v2 update:
Tumblr media
⭐ CHALLENGES MODE ⭐ A new single player mode with 50 time-trial varied challenges to complete. Navigate serpentine courses, destroy target ships or find the fastest route to complete your objective. These challenges are fairly advanced! You will come of of them sailing like a pro! ⭐ PRACTICE MODE ⭐ Handling your ship is tricky at first, which can be confusing for new players, that's why we decided to add a practice mode where you can respawn instantly to get the hang of it before you start a proper match. You can also use it by yourself to test or hone your skills. ⭐ CANNONBALL STEALING ⭐ A player with cannonballs has too big of an advantage versus a player without them. The parry mechanic was added to minimize this gap, but the armed player could still choose to play it safe and shoot at point blank range. This was not ideal, so we have added a new game mechanic: If a player without cannonballs touches a player with them, it will steal one crate. This way, an armed player is forced to risk a shoot form a certain distance or risk having their cannonballs stolen. ⭐ TIP PUSHING ⭐ Because of how physics worked previously, trying to push your rivals rarely worked that well. The overall physics of the game have been reworked so they work and feel better, particularly regarding pushing. In particular, pushing with the front tip of your ship will now push other ships harder, so you can use it as a more reliable form of attack. ⭐ ISLAND GRAZING ⭐ Before, making contact with an island made your ship explode, no exceptions. This was a clear and clean way to handle it, but it didn't feel that good to be eliminated because you slightly grazed an island. We have changed this to allow a bit of margin. Now your ship won't explode if you touch an island at a very low speed. ⭐ MAPS REWORK ⭐ Before, there were 6 types of maps. Balera and Tirimo were pretty similar to each other, and Nonopi was so difficult to navigate it was rarely ever played. Now the maps have been reduced to 4, and we've added small visual differences between them (not much more can be done in that regard without ruining the color palette or complicating things). The Mix mode now mixes the different map styles inside a single match instead of just choosing one single style at random. Also, the map creation algorithms have been rebalanced so they create faired stages, particularly on Yincana mode. ⭐ FASTER, MORE RESPONSIVE CONTROLS ⭐ Originally, we went for a bit of a slower, more realistic kind of controls that made the ships a bit harder handle. The assumption was that with enough practice, this could be overcome and you would have perfect control of your vessel, but this didn't really happen; the turning was too slow and the inertia too strong to allow for risky and bolder plays. We changed the controls to make play faster and ships more responsive. Controller support has also been improved, with the downside of removing controller rumble. To allow controllers to rumble you must use XInput, but XInput can only detect 4 controllers. All the solutions we came up with felt too convoluted for such an irrelevant feature, so we decided to remove it and let things stay simple. ⭐ IMPROVED IA ⭐ The script that controls the bots has been completely remade. They play way better now. ⭐ NEW SIDE ART ⭐ For gameplay reasons, Shipped is played on a square 1:1 screen. This leaves two black bars on the sides of your usual screen monitor, that could be filled up with some side art. This was an afterthought made at the end of development and the options available were... pretty lacking. You can now fill the sides of your screen with more pleasing (and animated!) backgrounds. ⭐ NEW MUSIC ⭐ 3 new tracks and an extended main menu theme. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's it! As stated before, there are a ton of other small improvements making Shipped more fun than ever, but those are the biggest ones. We hope you enjoy them! Even though we didn't add an online mode (we would need to basically remake the entire game to make it work), remember that you can play online with your friends using Steam Remote Play Together (only one copy of the game required!). We do it often and it works pretty well as long as all the players are from the same general region.
PC ONLY
Unfortunately, we are not in charge of the port and publishing of the Switch version, so all these changes will be available only on PC (Steam and itch.io). A PRICE INCREASE? Because local multiplayer games are not a particularly hot genre on Steam, Shipped was priced on the lower side. Counter-intuitively, a lower price doesn't necessarily attract more sales, since people might expect it to reflect lack of content and/or quality. Getting extra money from this update was never the plan, but with the new single player content added, a price increase might better reflect the current value of the game. We might apply it the following days/weeks.

study buddies || k.mg x reader
Pairing: frat!mingyu x fem reader
Summary: studying for midterms with the guy you’re hooking up with goes exactly how you’d expect
Warnings: swearing, light smut (18+)
Word Count: 1.6k
a/n: reworked this old blurb originally posted on my tom holland fic account ( @wazzupmrstark ) for my gf’s birthday :)) happy birthday @hotgirlmingyu
Masterlist
You woke up to banging on your apartment door. Groaning, you rolled over to check your phone and saw that it was six am. You pushed yourself up and out of bed and padded into the kitchen to answer the door. You were surprised the relentless knocking hadn’t woken up your roommate, but she was a pretty heavy sleeper.
You yanked the door open to see Mingyu with a handful of textbooks. You squinted at him in confusion, wondering if you were seeing things. Mingyu had never been to your place before, you didn’t even know he knew where you lived.
His appearance startled you a bit. His hair was messy where it was usually slicked back or styled and he was wearing gray sweatpants and a white t-shirt. You didn’t think you’d ever seen him in anything other than khakis and a douchey printed shirt.
“What are you doing here?” you asked, rubbing your eyes.
He frowned. “You said we should study for midterms together.”
You thought back to the last time you’d seen Mingyu. You couldn’t remember saying anything like that.
“Was I drunk?”
“Probably.”
“So why are you here?”
“To study. You agreed that we could help each other out.”
“Mingyu, I don’t even remember agreeing to that.”
“Well I’m already here,” he said and pushed past you into your apartment.
“Seriously? It’s Saturday.”
“Yeah, and midterms are next week.”
“Couldn’t you have waited until the sun was up?” you grumbled, mostly to yourself and shut the door behind him.
“We’ve got a lot of material to cover.”
You cursed under your breath as you watched him set up at your kitchen table, knowing you should probably study even though you desperately wanted to go back to bed.
You and Mingyu had met at a party at his fraternity and woke up the next morning tangled in the sheets of his bed. To say it was awkward would have been an understatement. You didn’t think you’d ever see him again, but to your horror, you saw him in your stats lecture on Monday and your mythology class on Thursday. This was a pretty big university. Why did the same asshole have to be in two of your classes?
As much as it annoyed you, you couldn’t stop thinking about Mingyu, and apparently, he was having a similar dilemma because every time you went out he seemed to be there, and every time you hooked up.
That was the extent of your relationship, though. You didn’t even speak to each other in class or at parties. The only time you talked was behind closed doors when one or both of you was naked. Even then you kept your guard up because you refused to let yourself fall for a frat boy with commitment issues who never wanted to be seen with the same girl twice. A boy who wouldn’t even talk to you in public.
But you couldn’t ignore the way your heart fluttered when he said your name as he was about to cum, or the way his lips felt against yours. He could be a total dick, but you’d also seen a softer side of him that he didn’t show many people. You forced yourself to forget about that side. It was easier that way.
“Okay, what are we starting with?” you asked with a sigh.
“We have the stats exam first, we should work on that.”
You made a face. Statistics was the harder out of the two for you. In fact, it was the hardest class you were taking this semester.
“I can’t believe I’m doing math before seven am.”
“You won’t be complaining when you ace the midterm,” he quipped, already working on a practice worksheet.
You watched him solve problems like he was checking items off a list. You knew he was good at statistics, but you didn’t know he was that good. Figures, a guy like him was good at pretty much everything. Everything except mythology apparently, because once you’d switched to that he was flustered and frustrated. You would quiz him on myths only for him to get every single question wrong.
“Mingyu, did you even read any of these?” you asked, pinching the bridge of your nose.
“Yes, y/n, I read every one. How do you think I passed all the reading quizzes?”
“Cheating?” it slipped out before you could stop it and Mingyu gave you a hard glare. You held up your hands defensively. “Just a joke.”
“I don’t think it was.” He licked his lips. “But for what it’s worth I read them all. I just can’t keep them straight.”
You sighed. You felt bad, but you were getting frustrated too. And not just because Mingyu wasn’t grasping the myths. This was the longest you’d ever spent together (at least while you were awake) and you hadn’t even had sex. He just smelled so nice and looked so cute when he was concentrating that you couldn’t help feeling a little impatient. You had been at it for hours, you thought you would’ve done it at least once by now. But Mingyu was more serious about studying than you thought. It was kind of admirable and kind of annoying.
“Okay well reread through the Egyptian myths and I’ll quiz you again.”
“Alright.”
He pulled out his reading packet and flipped to the section you took out your phone and scrolled through social media mindlessly as he read, but it quickly got boring. You wished Mingyu would take a break so he could rail you. He was still reading intently, but you figured a little distraction couldn’t hurt.
You started by taking your hair down from your bun and shaking it out so that it fell around your shoulders. You knew your shampoo drove Mingyu crazy and hoped it would have an effect on him today. He shifted his seat, but didn’t look up from the packet. Next, you leaned over and rested your head on his shoulder. You’d never done something so domestic like this with Mingyu, but it seemed to work because he cleared his throat and adjusted his sweatpants.
“You know you could be working on math.”
You shrugged. “We already did stats for hours today. I think I’ll jump off a bridge if I look at one more differential equation.”
He fell silent and tried focusing back onto the reading, but you moved your hand to his thigh and kept it there as you continued to through twitter, not even reading what was on your screen.
“Stop that,” Mingyu muttered, making you jump a little.
“Why?”
“Fuck, because you’re distracting me. You look too hot right now.”
“I’m wearing pajamas.”
“I really don’t care. You still look hot and I’m trying not to fuck you senseless right now.”
“Well what’s stopping you?” you asked lowly and nipped at his ear.
“Need to finish this,” he replied through gritted teeth.
“I can’t convince you to take a break?” You moved the hand on his leg up so that you were cupping him over his pants.
He shook his head. “After.”
You leaned over and kissed his neck, then his jaw, and felt him get hard under your hand. “If I have to stop what I’m doing you won’t be able to walk for the next week.”
“That sounds like more of a motivator than a deterrent,” you admitted. “I’ll suck you off,” you offered and hooked your thumb in the waistband of his sweats, trying to bribe him.
“If you let me finish I’ll eat you out,” he countered.
You straightened up. It sounded like a pretty good deal.
“Fine.”
A few minutes passed in silence and you were waiting patiently, typing up a rough draft of an essay you had due for another class when Mingyu groaned.
“What?” you asked, wondering if he needed help.
“Can you please stop that?”
“Stop what? I’m literally doing nothing.” You were genuinely confused now.
“Just- I don’t know you’re making it so hard to concentrate.”
“Am I making it hard?” You smirked.
“Very funny.”
“Would it help if I put a paper bag over my head?”
“Probably.”
“Come on, keep reading about Osiris.”
“I don’t want to read about Osiris anymore, he’s a dick.”
“The faster you finish the faster you can get off.”
“I thought you didn’t want to wait,” Mingyu pointed out, trying to deflect.
“I think I recall something about you going down on me if I let you finish reading.”
“Fine,” he grumbled, but didn’t turn back to the book. Instead, he continued to gaze at you with those big brown eyes. You couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
“What?” You felt your cheeks get warm.
“I just really want to kiss you right now.”
You smiled and raised your chin, challenging him. “Then do it.”
He leaned forward and pressed his lips to yours. You closed your eyes and kissed him back, savoring the moment.
When you pulled away, Mingyu’s eyes were dark with want and you could see that he was now fully hard in his sweatpants.
“How about I eat you out now anyway?” He suggested, leaning forward to kiss your neck.
You moaned and brought your hands to his hair.
“You trying to bribe me?”
“Is it working?”
“Fuck yeah.”
Mingyu stood and picked you up from your chair. You wrapped your legs around his waist again. He pulled on your bottom lip with his teeth and smirked.
“Promise you’ll finish studying after?” you asked.
He considered it. “Does what we’re about to do count as studying mythology? Because it’s going to be legendary.”
You scrunched up your face in distaste. “No, I take it back. Put me down.”
Mingyu grinned. “Hey! You know no ones gives it to you as good as I do.”
“That confident are you?”
His grin turned into a smirk. “Is that a challenge?”
lmk what you think i always appreciated feedback!!

Riverdale S5 E18 (Next to Normal) - 5 Things I Loved/ 3 Things To Consider.
5 Things I Loved
1. Charles Smith (son of Jones) is much more terrifying as a Gene Kelly type grinning dancer in his All American Boy High School outfit than he had been as Chick’s lover or killer or FBI agent.  I loved this - that Alice’s vision of normal is completely horrifying.  The completely lobotomized version of Polly, a Polly without the pain, undercurrents of frantic hysteria or the bitterness at opportunities lost that the actual Polly had,  is also extremely soulless and false. Alice Cooper absolutely never understood her daughter, even if she did love her.  And it was terrific that even the vision Polly ‘turns’ on Alice.  This was very well done.
2. Jughead making his bid for Tabitha and her accepting it was just all kinds of cute.  I mean, this is Jughead the Failman of Messy Mess, so he’s doing this only after getting two of the broadest possible hints ever provided by a beautiful woman to a man in the history of narrative  (“I’m his girlfriend” to his ex girlfriend, and then “He’s also my boyfriend” to her dad, and forcing him to act along) but nevertheless - good for you Jughead!
I know nothing about this musical so I don’t know if this is how it really goes or if they reworked most or all of the lyrics, but in any case, his progression was extremely funny to me and very in character with post-time-jump Jughead. He says Ask Me To Be Your Real Boyfriend and she refuses (good for you Tabs) then he says, The World Sucks So We Should Date (um?) and then he says, I Suck In So Many Ways So We Should Date (??!?!) but it works!  She doesn’t even mind that he wears the most hideous jacket to a Meet the Folks dinner.
I like this relationship between these two very strange people so much, these two very pretty oddballs who make an extremely wholesome commitment to each other before they’ve ever been sexually intimate.  Also I got a kick out of the smoochy smooch sound effect noises that sounded like they’d been added post production.   Because the word ‘normal’ is worked to death here, I liked that the way Tabitha and Jughead are using the much more loaded word “perfect” in their numbers was a nice antidote.
Sidebar:  Tabitha was running away from an overweening closeness with her father, apparently, so she is similar to Veronica in that way. Is that why I’m so in love with her?  I absolutely adored S1 Veronica so hard.
3. I loved the interesting and very ‘visible’ directorial/ photography decisions in this episode.
One is the way Tabitha’s tall elegant parents are framed to be absolutely gigantic and enormous compared to how Tabitha and Jughead are framed.   Jughead is not actually a short person and everything I’ve seen of Tabitha indicates she’s quite long limbed herself, but the two of them are photographed to be constantly peering ‘up’ at Tabitha’s parents, who are both framed to fill up the entire screen and seem to be constantly looking down from ‘on high.’  Tabitha and Jughead look completely adorable and diminutive together.
The other was when Archie and Veronica are discussing breaking up, and both their worlds are cocked at an ‘off’ angle.  The Andrews’ kitchen, which is usually lit orange and warm, is suddenly in slate and is full of sharp hard angles, and it’s tilted.  The camera doesn’t feel like it’s doing a dutch angle thing - it feels like the house itself is wrong. And of course it is all wrong, for Veronica.
Veronica tiny and alone in the beautifully lit and nicely appointed solid-Americana bedroom she shares with Archie, all wrong and bored, was very moving to me as well.
4. I loved the fanservice they put in for us Cheryl Blossom stans. During Cheryl’s number in her emptied church, she sprays water on her mother’s face accompanied by whip sounds that used to happen when she flipped her hair around in all the other musicals we’ve had to date. So I stand corrected. It wasn’t that Cheryl’s magnificent hair comes with its own sound effect. It’s that the sound of a whip cracking is actually Cheryl’s musical leitmotif.  Ha!
Sidebar:  The fact that people who were in it for the ‘new spirituality’ and cult drop out once the religion turns out to be an old spirituality and an old god (Gaia)  was extremely funny to me and felt like a very Catholic thing to say about religion: that everyone wants the new shiny thing, because the old stuff carries actual duties and responsibility.
5.  More fanservice - Reggie in his slick outfit with his hair all smoothed back studying for an exam and talking about his 5 year plans.  I do not understand this way of studying, where you have another person present and they’re talking to you AND they are making you talk to them but also I am an ultra introvert who would rather go without than have to make a phone call to talk to a person so maybe this is a me problem. Anyway, Veronica coming to an introspective realization when helping the most unintrospective person in Riverdale do something was a nice touch.
3 Things To Consider
a. Why does nobody in Riverdale know the word NORMATIVE. Normative does not mean good, and normative rarely actually reflects reality.  This obsession with ‘normal’ and equating that as some sort of standard - when there’s literally not a single ‘normal’ family in the entirety of this city made me feel like I’d been powdered with fleas.  Part of this is personal - I knew from the get-go that what I was born into was not normal, not the people, not the circumstances, and even worse, a lot of what I had looked “special” (super-normative?)  (see e.g. being a dip kid in boarding school) - so I could not view normal as aspirational, only as a method to hold things over people’s heads and make them feel bad.
b. Marriage:  I’ve noticed that marriage, once entered into, seems to be a really addictive lifestyle, and they’re kind of saying that in Riverdale.
I do not mean this to be disrespectful but when someone’s beloved dog dies after a long illness, I’ve seen a significant number of dog owners go off the idea of having a dog ever again, and stay dogless (though absolute adoring and showering love on every single dog they see) because they’re so heartsick, for years.
Marriage, though, seems to be the opposite of that.  People who’ve married once keep getting remarried no matter how vicious the breakup and how costly the divorce.  So Veronica, her first marriage having come to a pretty spectacularly bad end (killing her husband in the middle of her divorce proceedings)  jumping immediately into cohabitation while talking about children and making marriage-like compromises looked very realistic to me, and also created a wry commentary about trying to find footing in an unmoored world.  Too bad that what Archie wants to do is live with the man who had been in love with him as a boy (I am talking about Jughead) and his father-substitute uncle.
The thing is, traditional marriage (the only kind that Veronica seems to know how to make - further commentary on Catholicism??) is shit for women entirely and always has been, which is why she can’t bear it even with Archie.
c. Primary Relationships in the Main Four:  After the extremely brutal way that the show ended Bughead 1.0 two episodes ago, where Betty simply does not (cannot?) give a shit about Jughead’s problems, I think this episode was the show trying to offer a gentler explanation for why it’s not going to work.
Jughead Jones has no primary attachments to his actual family of origin - his primary relationship  is always with the girl in his life, for good or for ill.  However, Betty Cooper’s primary attachment is, very sadly, to her very fucked up mother, Alice Cooper.  Alice Cooper’s primary attachment was I think to her son Charles, that she gave up, and that’s why she’s the way she is.
This is the problem for Veronica and Archie as well. Archie’s primary attachment is to Riverdale (he can’t even fuck when he’s not in Riverdale, people). Veronica’s primary attachment is to competitive achievement, and this just ISN’T available in Riverdale.
The arrows are all pointing in different directions, and not towards each other.

The Chain - Chapter 4/15
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Full Work | AO3 Link
Fandom: The Bad Batch (Star Wars)
Characters: Crosshair, Hunter, Howzer, Rex, Wrecker, Tech, Echo, Omega, Various Clones
Relationships: Crosshair & Howzer, Crosshair & Rex, Crosshair & The Bad Batch, Crosshair & Omega, Hunter & Rex, Hunter & Omega
Additional Tags: Redemption, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Humor, Found Family, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Graphic Violence, Eventual Happy Ending, Angst with a Happy Ending
Summary: One year after the events of The Bad Batch, Crosshair struggles to reconcile his choice with the harsh truth of the world around him. He finds enlightenment in the most unlikely of places and realizes he may have made the wrong decision. But is it too late to do something about it?
Two years after the events of The Bad Batch, Rex reluctantly agrees to allow Hunter and his squad to help him rescue a man who's been captured by the Empire, an Imperial double agent who's cover has been blown. What Hunter thought to be a simple extraction ends up having far greater consequences for their squad than he could have ever anticipated.
Chapter Warnings: None
Right actions in the future are the best apologies for bad actions in the past.
Tryon Edwards
Rex never struck Hunter as the type to let his nerves get the best of him. That one attempted fist fight with Crosshair when rescuing Echo notwithstanding, Rex was always calm and level headed when they worked together in the past. Skako Minor, Anaxes, on Bracca - it was clear why Rex was the Captain of the famously wild Torrent Company and essentially the de facto commander of the infamous 501st Legion. His calm and steady presence along with his cool confidence made him exactly the kind of guy people naturally gravitated to, naturally turned to for leadership.
Which is why it was weird that Rex seemed fidgety in a way he’d never seen from the man before. Anyone who didn’t know him wouldn’t notice, but Hunter could see the way he kept fiddling with the buttons on the controls needlessly. He could hear the leather of Rex’s gloves squeak as he clenched and unclenched his hands periodically. And only Hunter would be able to hear the way Rex kept consciously making an effort to unclench his jaw and stop grinding his teeth.
After the fourth time in as many minutes that Rex flexed his fingers, Hunter finally spoke up.
“Are you alright, Captain?”
Rex glanced at Hunter, hands deliberately stilling in his lap as he sat up straighter.
“Yes,” he said. “Just restless, I suppose.”
Hunter nodded, staring out at the streaking blue and white light of hyperspace through the viewport of the freighter’s cockpit.
“This operative of yours,” Hunter said after a moment, “you two are close?”
Whatever response Hunter was expecting from the other man, it wasn’t for him to laugh. Even Rex seemed startled by the response, looking sheepishly over at the sergeant.
“Sorry,” Rex said, rubbing a hand over his head. “I just- I certainly never expected to be, but… yeah. Yeah. I suppose we are.”
“You don’t get along?”
“We didn’t at first,” Rex said, crossing his arms across his chestplate. “ Manda , I used to hate the guy. But… he’s a good man. The more I worked with him, the more I spoke with the people he helped, I realized that. He’s done a lot for our brothers.”
Hunter nodded slowly. “How did you two meet?”
“Oh, uh—“ Rex twitched again as he went to fiddle with the pilot controls. “We met back during the war.”
“You served together?”
“Ehh,” Rex hedged, “Only a couple of times towards the end.”
Hunter waited for Rex to elaborate but the other man was silent, continuing to mess with the controls. The ship was on autopilot, so he wasn’t actually doing anything. He listened as Rex’s heart rate slowly started gaining speed.
“So… who did he serve under? Maybe I’ve heard of—“
The navicomputer beeped and Rex’s shoulders slumped nearly imperceptively.
“Why don’t you go back and check on the others?” If Hunter didn’t know any better he’d say Rex sounded… relieved? “We should be arriving soon and we still need to rework the plan now that you all are here.”
Hunter frowned. Rex studiously avoided his eyes. He wasn’t ignorant to the fact that Rex was purposefully trying to get rid of him - the man was apparently as good at lying as Wrecker - but he wasn’t sure why.
Finally Hunter nodded. He tapped his bracer against Rex’s pauldron and made his way out of the cockpit.
Rex mumbled something under his breath as the doors slid shut, but the hydraulics were too loud over the man’s voice for Hunter to be able to make out what was said.
He found everyone in the hold, Tech, Wrecker, Boil, Echo, and Omega sitting around the floor in a circle, with Gregor on a bench in the corner cleaning his blaster. He walked in just as Echo laughed at whatever the reg had said.
“Still, I’m glad to see you,” Boil said as Echo’s laughter died down. “Cody mentioned that Rex had found you, but I didn’t get the chance to reach out before… well…”
Echo smiled sadly, resting his flesh hand on Boil’s shoulder.
“It was always entertaining to listen to Rex rant to Cody about all the shenanigans you and Fives got into.”
“Yeah,” Echo agreed, voice gruff. “Though from what I hear, you and Waxer certainly kept Cody on his toes.”
Boil laughed.
“True. Usually it was Waxer making the plans. I somehow always ended up getting dragged along.”
“Yeah, I know how that goes.” Echo sighed. “I’m sorry, by the way. I read about Umbara. I can’t even imagine--”
“Don’t be,” Boil sighed, rubbing at the red scar on the side of his shaved head. “It felt unbearable at the time, but… sometimes I… sometimes I’m almost relieved? Force, that sounds horrible but it’s true. Sometimes I’m relieved he was gone so he wasn’t forced to become monsters like we were. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder if they were the lucky ones.”
“You’re not a monster, Boil,” Gregor piped up from the corner. “Whatever the chip made you do wasn’t you. You had no choice.”
Boil nodded slowly, fingers lingering on his temple.
“I still did it, though.”
“I know what you mean,” Wrecker said quietly, eyes on the ground. “When my chip activated I nearly killed my squad. If Rex hadn’t been there to stop me, I would have.”
Omega scooted closer to Wrecker and grabbed his hand, leaning her head against his shoulder. He smiled down at her.
Boil looked sympathetic. “It’s a good thing Rex was there, then. Rex was the one who picked up my ship when I left Corellia. I wish I could say I was surprised to see he’d made it out, but I don’t think I was, really. Cody always believed Rex would survive all of this.”
“Did you…” Echo trailed off, rubbing his neck awkwardly. “Did you… work with Cody while--”
“No,” Boil said firmly, shaking his head. “The GAR structure reorganized surprisingly quickly after the order went out. The 212th was recalled back to Coruscant and was divided up after that. Ghost Company went to Grand Admiral Tarkin while Cody and the other Marshal Commanders were sent to work directly under Palpatine. I haven’t seen Cody since we arrived on Coruscant after Uptapau.”
They were all quiet after that, heads bowed in remembrance of both their fallen and lost brothers. Besides Omega, everyone in the ship had worked under Cody’s command at some point and respected him for the great leader and big brother to all clones that he was. To imagine the strong willed, compassionate, selfless man under the direct control of someone like Palpatine was almost too much to bear.
It was thanks to Cody that Hunter and the others had even been allowed off Kamino. He’d been able to pull rank and convince Nala Se and the other Kaminoan scientists and trainers that the Unit 99s, of which Hunter, Crosshair, Tech, and Wrecker had been the last of, could be useful in the war. If it weren’t for Cody, they would have spent the rest of their days toiling around in Tipoca City, completing test after test until they were finally deemed too “defective” and decommissioned like the others in their unit, or put on janitorial duty like 99.
“What about you guys?” Boil’s quiet voice sounded overly loud in the solemn silence of the ship's hold. “How did you survive the order? Did the Commander get you guys out too?”
“No,” Tech said, adjusting his goggles. “Our chips were never activated. They malfunctioned due to our deviant nature from the other, regular clones.”
Boil cast Wrecker a sidelong look.
“But I thought—“
“His activated later as an effect of repeated head trauma to the chip’s implantation site.”
“Well, I’m glad you guys didn’t have to experience that. Though, I imagine it must have been a very difficult situation for you surrounded by everyone else.”
“Heh, you could say that again,” Wrecker grumbled under his breath.
“We’ve essentially been on the run from the Empire for the last three years,” Echo said. “The vod’e pretty much attack us on sight.”
“You said the Commander helped you escape recently?” Omega piped up from under Wrecker’s arm.
Boil nodded slowly, gaze trained on the ground.
“I’ve only been on Yavin for about a day and a half,” Boil said. “The Commander got me out just a few days ago”
“And then he was discovered,” Tech said succinctly. Echo smacked his arm.
“Yeah,” Boil said quietly, running his hand over his hair. “Extracting me was a risk, from what Howzer said.”
“It was a different op than the usual extractions,” Gregor said from the corner. “Typically he just gave us foot soldiers that he could say were killed in action on missions. Two or three at a time, buried under flimsiwork and red tape. He’d splice the system and mark them as KIA. Apparently the Empire doesn’t care much if they lose one or two rank and file clones.”
“I was higher up in the command structure, though,” Boil added. “I was a lieutenant on Grand Admiral Tarkin’s security team. He was attending some diplomatic event in Corellia and I was assigned a protection squad. The Commander caught me as I was coming off my shift and took me to some tiny infirmary in the hotel. Stunned me and took my chip out. I barely knew what was going on when he told me that he was getting me out of the Empire and we needed to hurry.”
“A natborn Imperial officer helping clones?”
“No,” Boil shook his head, “he is a clone.”
Everyone was silent and Hunter frowned. A clone commander working from within the Empire?
Gregor paused his cleaning and looked up at the group, eyes flickering from them to Hunter, who still lingered in the doorway.
“A clone spy within the Empire?” Tech asked skeptically. “Without his chip?”
Boil nodded. “I wasn’t sure at first, either. He never took his helmet off and he didn’t sound like any clone I’d ever met. But he understood what it was like when I woke up freaking out, asking questions, getting angry. He talked me down, told me that he knew it was disorienting to wake up suddenly in control of your own body after so long but we didn’t have time for an existential crisis so I needed to get myself together.
“So what has he been doing?” Echo questioned. “Just… pretending his chip is active?”
“I guess so. Howzer confirmed it later. They’re pretty close, I guess  - I thought Howzer was going to lose it when the distress signal went off.”
“How did the Commander get his out?”
Boil shrugged. “I didn’t ask.”
The room fell silent at that.
Something about the situation prickled at the back of Hunter’s mind. Maybe it was just the similarities to their own brother. Crosshair had chosen to stay with the Empire as well, even when out from under the chip’s influence - though there was no denying that Crosshair’s motivations and this Commander’s motivations were extremely different.
Crosshair chose to stay, to leave the team, their family, behind for selfish reasons - ego and power and a place in the new galactic order. This Commander chose to stay not for himself, but to help those who couldn’t help themselves.
The knowledge burned something inside him, but Hunter buried it down.
This is who I am. .
“We all thought he was crazy when he reached out to Rex,” Gregor piped up, his blaster discarded on the bench next to him. “The whole thing was his idea. We warned him it was suicide, but he didn’t care. Rex thought he’d be dead within a month, but he’s been helping clones get out for nearly two years now. Howzer kept telling him it was time to get out before he got caught, but he wouldn’t listen. Now here we are.”
“I tried to get him to come with me. Told him if they found out what he’d done, they’d kill him.” Boil snorted. “You know what he said to me? He said ‘ stop being a noble di’kut and get in the ship before I stun you and put the chip back in. ’”
They all frowned at the threat, Gregor giggling from his place in the corner.
“I’m glad to be going back for the Commander,” Boil said. “Obviously I wish it were in better circumstances. I know it was his decision to stay behind, but it still felt wrong leaving him there, you know? Colt always said we never leave a man behind.”
“Yeah,” Echo said quietly, eyes meeting Hunter’s across the room. “I know the feeling.”
Hunter held Echo’s gaze, same as he always did when the topic came up over the last two years. And same as every other time, in the face of Echo’s admonishment, Hunter said nothing in return. There was nothing to say that hadn’t already been discussed at length.
Repeatedly.
Loudly.
Wrecker and Tech glanced at each other over Echo’s head while Omega averted her eyes to the ground.
The ship shook as it dropped out of hyperspace and Hunter took that as his que to get moving.
“Rex said we’ll be touching down soon,” he said, stepping fully into the room. “We should start getting ready.”
As the others moved over to Gregor to begin gearing up, Echo stood and held Hunter’s gaze a moment longer. Hunter shook his head and Echo sighed before moving to join the others.
He had a feeling they’d be having that discussion once again once this mission was over.
Hunter felt a hand in his and he looked down to meet Omega’s eyes. She smiled sadly at him, squeezing his hand. He squeezed back, but couldn’t quite drudge up the willpower to smile in return.
“C’mon,” he said instead, “let’s gear up.”
She nodded and walked over to the group, helping Echo loop his pack over his scomp arm. Hunter watched them all and tried not to think about the weird feeling lingering in the back of his mind.
~
“Alright,” Rex said as the ramp to the ship lowered. They’d landed in the forest, hidden at the bottom of the mountain the same as they had last time. Gregor helped Tech and Rex navigate the ship to an area below the mountain where there was a hidden entry point similar to the vents they had escaped through last time.
“Echo, Hunter, Tech, Boil, and Gregor - you’re with me. Wrecker, stay with the ship.”
“Wha- oh, come on!” Wrecker said, slipping his helmet up to stare at Rex with wide eyes. “I can help!”
“You will help,” Rex held his hands up placatingly, “we need someone to stay with the ship that can meet us at the exit. I get a feeling we’re going to need to make a quick get away.”
“Aww, why can’t Tech do it?”
“We need Tech to help Gregor and Echo hack the systems,” Rex explained calmly. “This is a stealth mission, Wrecker, and those aren’t your, uh… strong suit.”
Wrecker groaned, pulling his helmet off and slunking off to sit on a crate. Omega patted his hand.
“Sorry, Wrecker. But I just can’t take any risks with this.”
“Nah, I understand,” and to Wrecker’s credit, he did sound like he meant it.
Rex nodded and gestured for the others to follow him off the ship.
Before Omega could get far, Hunter grabbed her elbow.
“Omega.... I want you to stay on the ship with Wrecker.”
Omega frowned.
“Why? I can help!”
Hunter sighed. She stood with arms crossed as she leveled a glare at Hunter and her eyes filled with that stubborn indignation she’d been showing more and more since she’d reached her teenage years.
As she got older, every time she glared at him like that she looked more and more like--
“We’re walking straight into an Imperial base,” Hunter said, trying to keep his tone as even as possible. “You remember what happened last time.”
“It was my idea to help on this mission.”
“It was,” Hunter conceded. “Though, you didn’t exactly talk it through with us before offering.”
She had the grace to look a little chastised at that.
“This is dangerous, Omega. High level stuff, not what we usually do. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
He trailed off and the fire seemed to go out from under Omega with her disappointed sigh.
“Fine,” she said. “But I don’t like it. If you get caught again, we will be having words.”
Hunter chuckled. “Noted.”
Her eyes searched his face a moment longer before she flung her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest.
“Be careful.”
“I will,” he rested his chin on top of her curls. “I promise.”
Hunter’s commlink beeped and Rex’s voice filled the room.
“Hunter, let’s move out.”
Omega pulled back and crossed her arms as Hunter pulled on his helmet. She waved to him as he walked down the ramp, her and Wrecker both watching as the group started making their way toward the base of the mountain.
Hunter stared up at the mountain as they worked their way through the forest, his mind jumping back to the last time they had been on this planet, attempting a rescue from this exact base. Hopefully this time went better than the last. Hopefully no one was captured again. Hopefully they could get in and out without alerting anyone, though his squad was never that lucky.
Hopefully Crosshair isn’t here, Hunter thought as they climbed into the vent shaft. They hadn’t seen nor heard from Crosshair since the day they left Tipoca City. The Empire was large and the Galaxy even larger, so the chances were slim. He hoped. He really wasn’t in the mood to deal with a family reunion today.

American Revolution Theme - Part 1: Beth’s D.C. Spoon
So, this week I’m going to talk more about a TON of symbols we’ve connected to the American Revolution Theme. These are always exciting to uncover because it shows how these themes—many of which have stumped us somewhat for years—are finally coming together. These were conversations we had over weeks, so I’ll definitely be breaking them up into chunks for you.
Take it away, @wdway!
@wdway:
We've all been looking at Beth’s spoon for 6+ years and I know I, like so many people, thought it was an indication that Beth would show up in Washington D.C. Suddenly, looking at it the other day I realized the spoon could be telling us Beth will be part of a Revolution.
Tumblr media
I would have never gotten this had it not been for the connection @twdmusicboxmystery made to the Swamp Fox and the story of Greene and the American Revolution. Where the spoon says “Washington DC,” I'm now looking at that realizing that Washington may refer to George Washington, the leader of the American Revolution. The D.C. stands for a coda, a repeat. Beth will be a part of a new American Revolution.
I started remembering how we have seen pictures of George Washington in the show. I know s5e7, Dead Weight in the cabin with the Governor, as he came through the door, there is a portrait of George Washington. I always thought it stood for the city of D.C. That it represented where they would end up.
We've also seen images of the Washington Monument on Fear (also in TWD when they first got to Washington in 5x11). Actually, if you look at the handle of Beth’s spoon, I think that might be the Washington Monument. There have been lots of hints. We’ve just always read them differently.
I remembered a painting that tptb released a rework of a famous painting substituting the characters from TWD that was done several years ago and I have searched @twdmusicboxmystery’s archives, but I cannot find the painting. Here's the original.
(I can’t find the TWD version of this anywhere, either. But like the Thanksgiving painting they’ve been using the past few years, they used this and replaced all the people’s faces with characters from TWD.)
Tumblr media
I remember we thought it was a little strange why they would do this painting with characters from the show. Now it makes a lot more sense. I believe that Rick replaced George Washington but I can't remember who the other characters replaced. I'm especially curious who replaced the person in red, because I believe that will be Beth in the new Revolution. Here's what I found in the description of the painting. It speaks of the different people representing the different American population and then it goes on to say that some believe the figure in the red coat and black scarf may represent the women that fought and died for freedom.
So, it might be another female character like Carol but ultimately, I believe it is supposed to be Beth. Remember the red cape in Beth's prison cell. Another painting that Beth has been a substitute in was DaVinci's Last Supper. Jesus and Mary Magdalene both wore red.
Another image would be that Beth is associated with wolves and the famous story of Little Red Riding Hood who obviously wore red.
I believe the lady in red represents Lady Liberty. The reason I say that is because in my search after I read about this figure information on Lady Liberty popped up. One of the earliest versions of Liberty was the Roman goddess Libertas which description sounds an awful lot like the Tarot card of the Empress. Another image that popped up under Liberty was this one and I gasped when I saw it and thought, “Oh my gosh, I think I'm on the right track here.”
Tumblr media
Remember this from TWB? (We saw it near Iris in a tent in one of the episodes.) I remember us having a discussion about how we believed that she represented Beth and yet we didn't know anything about the Revolution storyline at that time.
I'm about to take you down a side tunnel and this one is also so very good. In the episode Still, after Beth picks up the spoon, she looks over and sees Daryl stuffing jewelry and money into a black backpack. And now that I think about it, it's Daryl who initially carries the backpack on his back next to his red rag hanging from his back pocket. Red and black, the colors of Liberty.
Tumblr media
So many things I want to point out. To start with, the pattern of the rug is diamonds a Beth symbol. Daryl is leaning over a dead walker wearing a watch. There is also another watch in the loot that Daryl is shoving into the bag, along with gold jewelry, pearl necklace a water symbol, also a military one because of the famous Naval Base, Pearl Harbor.
If you enlarge the picture so that you can see the bundles of money, they're all $20 bills, turned so we only see what most people consider the backside of the $20 bill. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't off hand know what the back of a $20 bill was. I definitely knew Andrew Jackson is on the front, so I took out my wallet and pulled out a $20. On the back was the White House.
Here a side note about the $20 bill that I found out when I Googled for more information. In 1861, the 20-demand note (what it was called) had on the front side, the Goddess of Liberty holding a sword and shield and on the back was an abstract design printed in green.
Tumblr media
(Now back to the present $20.) My first thought was White House, white=Beth. You might be surprised at this, but I have watched the episode Still a number of times through the years, haha. I know the ending very, very well, as does everyone else. I remembered that Daryl and Beth used one of these bundles to burn the Moonshine Shack down and it was Beth who actually lit the match to the bundle and Daryl who throws it.
I guess I actually did pay attention in school so many years ago because it hit me like a ton of bricks that the White House was burnt down by the British in the War of 1812. Not only the White House was burned but also the capital and the Library of Congress.
Was it a coincidence that they used a bundle of money featuring the White House to burn down their dwelling? I think not.
Did I hear you ask the question is there anything significant about the fact that Andrew Jackson is on the front of the $20 bill? I'm so glad you asked. The answer is yes. This is something I remember from American history and the fact that I live in Tennessee and that Andrew Jackson’s home is within 30 minutes of where I live. You can't grow up in Tennessee without knowing some of the history of Andrew Jackson.
First let's start with a little brief history of the War of 1812, which lasted more than that year. This is my non scholar way of telling you about the War of 1812. After Great Britain had won the war with France and had taken away Napoleon's power, they decided to go back to the colonies and see if the first round was just a mistake because they were the dominant power. They were the British Empire.
One of the last big conflicts before the British finally realized they were dealing with the wrong people was the Battle of New Orleans. The British wanted to dominate the Mississippi river and if they could do that, they would basically be taking over the territory on the other side (the West), but first they needed to take New Orleans.
The British didn't think it would be a problem because they were a great force and the Americans led by Major General Andrew Jackson, were a small ragtag army made up of militia frontiersmen, slaves, Indians and pirates.
That's right: pirates.
Tumblr media
Jean Lafitte was a pirate who ran a smuggling empire. The actual battle only lasted a short time, even though the British had a huge force. They fought the Americans the old-fashioned way, by simply marching forward, whereas the small force of Americans who were made up of people had to count every bullet were sure shots. In 30 minutes the British lost 2,000 and Andrew Jackson’s army lost fewer than 100.
You're probably thinking that was kind of interesting but what does that have to do with the storyline in TWD? This is just my guess, but I think there will be 2 wars or 2 revolutions that will include Rick and Beth. The first one will be against the Commonwealth and the second the CRM in the spinoff.
Back to Beth’s spoon. I thought occurred to me about the dinner scene in Alone where Daryl is eating the jelly and it has always been an odd scene. People have talked about it off and on for years how he's very obviously really over playing the eating of the jelly with a spoon.
Tumblr media
The question occurred to me though, could that spoon be Beth's Washington D.C. spoon? Granted, there's no way to know for sure but it's an intriguing thought, isn't it? If in fact one of the meanings of the spoon is what I stated above, that the spoon hinted there would be a coda, a repeat of a fight for freedom similar to Washington's American Revolution, then the sharing of the spoon would be indication of the sharing of the storyline that they would be an equal part of the fight to overthrow a corrupt system and give freedom to the good common people that are still out there.
One of those definitions that I read about a coda is that it is a repeat that eventually brings a satisfactory completion to the piece of music. In reading that, I realize that the coda spoon is an indication that Beth and Daryl since they both are connected with the spoon both will be part of the satisfactory completion of the TWD story. It means that we will see Beth before the series ends.
Tumblr media
We can tell that there's some type of twists in the spoon on the handle shortly above scooped area we think of as the spoon, it looks to be the same place that we see it on the first 2 shots featuring this spoon.
Again, no true proof but it does tend to give some credence to the idea. This gives another importance meaning to us seeing the spoon in Leah's shack. It points to the fact that we're about to see a coda.

Hellooooo I heard that you are taking prompts!! May I propose crossdressing SQH? For the sect's mission or sth like that =))) and he pulls a very convincing disguise, with his knowledge as an author. Bonus if he can dance/sing/play instruments cuz I know he has it in him, being an overachiever he is (sorry for the rambling I just. Rly love him)
Don’t apologize! I love SQH too, so feel free to ramble away. My inbox is always open, even if you just want to gush about Shang Qinghua!
“Everything is set up correctly?” Yue Qingyuan frets.
And it really is fretting, the way that the man hovers over the group of peak lords that have gathered around the meeting table, almost like a hungry hummingbird scoping out its next meal. The man is normally much more composed than this, a bastion of calm amidst any crisis, and it’s making everyone else high strung as well, now that he’s slipped.
“For the last time, Sect Leader,” Shen Qingqiu grouses tiredly from where he sits, as slouched as he’ll ever get, fan open and so close to his face that it’s pressed against his cheek and causing his words to slur slightly. “We have gone over every possible contingency. Shang-shidi will be as safe as if he is still within our very own sect.”
“Yes, I know,” Yue Qingyuan murmurs, still gazing concernedly down at the multiple shafts of papers that they’ve got spread out across the entirety of the table. There’s a crease in between his brows, and Shen Qingqiu doesn’t really blame the man for being so worried, not really.
It’s a big operation, what they’ve got going on here. Complex, precarious, and it’s so incredibly important that they get every minute detail correct in their handling of the situation, or all of Shang Qinghua’s hard work, years worth of it, will go down the drain faster than someone can snap their fingers.
Despite carrying himself with the calm distance of an immortal master, leader of one of the greatest sects in all of China, Yue Qingyuan is the most ardent Big Brother Type that Shen Yuan has ever met in either of his lives. The man obviously cares about each and every one of his martial siblings, and it’s very apparent in the way that he gets anxious like this whenever one of them is put into a dangerous situation.
Given what the situation entails — and what exactly they’re dealing with here — Shen Qingqiu definitely doesn’t blame him for his hovering.
But, by the heavens, he’s ready to grab him by the shoulders and force him into a chair. He is fully prepared to sit on the man himself just to get Yue Qingyuan to be still for five seconds.
“Shang Qinghua is not new to work like this,” Mu Qingfang says soothingly. His calming demeanor is only broken by the way the doctor reaches out a second later to redundantly adjust the placement of one of the papers that litter the table. A nervous tick. “Out of us all, it’s him who has the highest chance of success. That’s why we chose him.”
“I know,” Yue Qingyuan says again, more firmly this time. He folds his hands behind his back and stands straight, gazing down at the table between them all. “However, given the matter at hand, your shixiong believes it prudent to ensure that every possible avenue of failure be closely examined.”
“More than we already have?” Ju Qingsong complains. He’s slumped entirely over the table, and has been for the last two hours. “Zhangmen-shixiong, this lord thinks that you’re really being a mother hen, here. Shang-shixiong’s done this sort of thing before. He’ll be fine!”
“It’s Shang-shijie now, Qingsong,” Qi Qingqi slyly announces, pulling the door to the meeting room open with a flourish. “And look, our martial sister! She’s so pretty, isn’t she?”
“I still don’t see why it couldn’t have been you doing this,” Shang Qinghua grouches as he troops into the room behind her. “You’ve done stuff like this before, as much as I have, and you’re actually a girl.”
Shen Qingqiu turns away from the table, a word of good-nature’s ribbing ready at the top of his tongue, but he finds that he can’t deploy it. Not when his bro is standing right there and looking like a real, dainty and dignified young maiden of a noble, xianxia family.
The robes are what’s most shocking, at first, like a full frontal assault to what Shen Qingqiu has become used to in regards to his friend. Shang Qinghua prefers dark blues, indigos, and blacks, all in a durable and solid weave — so, to see him decked out in flowing silks of soft pastels and light trims and embroidery, is certainly a shock to the senses.
His hair is next on the list of differences, usually pinned up entirely in braids and a bun held together with sharp silver needles. Today, half of it falls down his back in a gentle wave, while the top half of it is carefully twisted up into a delicate looking hair ornament that sparkles subtly in the light of the night pearls that decorate the meeting hall’s ceiling.
All of this, paired with the tasteful arrangement of jewelry — earrings that accentuate his jaw in a way that makes it appear a softer line than it actually is, artful golden clasps around the crown of his head, with gemmed beads that hang on carefully positioned wires to frame the fall of his hair and make it look like a tumbling waterfall of golden waters — Shang Qinghua makes for a beautiful young mistress.
“Damn, bro,” he says, unable to stop himself.
Shang Qinghua turns and raises an eyebrow at him, and all Shen Qingqiu finds himself able to do is shoot his friend a thumbs up.
“Damn is right,” Ju Qingsong gives a low whistle, pushing himself up from the table. Both of his eyebrows have risen up to meet his hairline, and a large grin adorns his face. “Shang-shijie! You’re breathtaking! Isn’t she gorgeous, Qingsheng?”
Rong Qingsheng doesn’t answer the man. He’s too busy staring at Shang Qinghua with silent and intense eyes. Knowing what he does of the lord of the agricultural peak, Shen Qingqiu figures he’s busy cataloguing every minute detail of their martial brother’s — er, sister’s — new look.
Honestly, he doesn’t blame him at all. Shang Qinghua makes for a show-stopping beauty.
Seriously, what the hell?
“Didn’t I do such a good job?” Qi Qingqi preens. She reaches over and, with careful fingers, tucks a stray strand of hair behind Shang Qinghua’s ear.
The man ducks his head, slowly in mindfulness of his intricate up-do, but Shen Qingqiu is too busy having heart palpitations to make fun of him for it. From the way that his fellow martial brothers’ eyes have all widened imperceptibly, they’re having similar struggles.
Liu Qingge stands up from the table rather abruptly.
“Qi-shijie needs to go instead,” he demands, a scowl curving his brows downward.
Shang Qinghua lets out an exasperated puff of air and tilts his head back, chin rising up almost stubbornly, and it’s likely because he’s still not used to the added weight of the hair ornaments. What it does, though, is expose the curve of his neck, and Shen Qingqiu turns away from the sight of his bro entirely just to shoot their sect leader a look of trepidation. The man himself seems like his earlier anxieties have doubled.
“That’s what I said earlier!” Shang Qinghua complains, crossing his arms over his chest. He’s pouting, and oh god it makes the picture of him look all the more delicate. Has Airplane even seen himself in a mirror yet?! He needs to stop with the cute actions!
“I said ‘Qi-shimei is actually a girl! Like, we have an actual female peak lord, who doesn’t have to crossdress in order to sneak into the human trafficking ring to find their financial books!’” Shang Qinghua re-enacts, pout becoming even more pronounced. Shen Qingqiu is pretty sure that Liu Qingge’s grip on the table has just cracked the wood. “And you all were like, ‘But Shang Qinghua! You have more undercover experience!’ And I was like, ‘That’s bullshit!’ because you all know that Qi Qingqi’s peak actually specializes in espionage! Like, why is it always me that has to go undercover?! I’m An Ding! I deal with information networks, not field work!”
“Except, you do deal in fieldwork,” Mu Qingfang points out, gently. He sounds like someone has punched him in the gut. “Very often, in fact…. Zhangmen-shixiong, I-I don’t think—”
“That’s because you guys always make me go!” Shang Qinghua interrupts him, clearly needing to complain a bit more. “I mean, there are plenty of times I do it myself, sure, but that’s just because I know the job will be done right that way! But all the other times! Like now! Seriously, you guys, Qi Qingi is right there!”
“And we definitely should have listened to you, you’re right,” Shen Qingqiu says weakly, waving his fam in front of his face in the hopes that it’ll help with the faint flush he can feel assaulting his cheeks.
“It’s too late for second guessing,” Qi Qingqi says flippantly, shaking her loose hair behind her shoulders. “If we change things up now, the entire operation will have to be reworked from the ground up, and that’s just not possible with the time frame we have. If we want to take advantage of the opening we’ve been given to take down this trafficking ring, then we must proceed as planned.”
“I hate that I have to agree with you,” Shang Qinghua grumbles.
He takes a step forward, toward the table, and then stops, staring at his own chair with a complicated expression on his face. After a few moments, he sighs and looks up.
“All these layers are even more complicated than my peak lord formal attire,” he says, forlorn. “I… I have no idea how to sit down in them…. Shijie, help.”
Qi Qingqi cackles, loudly, before going forward and pulling the man’s chair out for him. She waves her hand at the seat and instructs Shang Qinghua on how to adjust his robes as he sits, and then goes on to comment that they will have to practice so that Shang Qinghua will be able to make the motions look flawless and befitting of the young noble lady that he will be impersonating.
None of the other peak lords move. They’re too busy looking anywhere but at the two shijie currently chatting away on the other side of the table. Well, Rong Qingsheng is studying them rather carefully, but that’s a given. Ju Qingsong is watching his friend with an amused (if wistful) expression, himself.
Shen Qingqiu shuts his fan with a flick of his wrist and lays his head down on the table, pillowing his eyes into his crossed forearms.
He supposes that he will have to resign himself to the unfortunate fate of actually worrying about his best friend while the other is gone, for the entirety of the mission. Airplane is just too pretty for his own good! It’s Shen Yuan’s job, as his bro, to be absolutely and wholeheartedly concerned about what might happen to him out there, especially in the situation he will be descending into.
Man, he really relates to Yue Qingyuan, now. Had the sect leader known just how pretty Shang Qinghua would be? Is that why he’d been so visibly apprehensive even from the beginning?
Shen Qingqiu thinks he might need a drink. He glances across the table, at Shui Qingyu, and finds that the brewery peak lord appears to be thinking the same. Their eyes meet, their expressions of dread nearly identical, and they share a nod.
Later tonight, they’re going to get drunk.

A Recorded Life Sequel (7/10) - Miraculous Ladybug
Words: 1533 Summary: Finally, a day off for Marinette and Adrien. To celebrate, they decide to capture it on video for their fans. Author's Note: domestic adrienette domestic adrienette domestic adrienette!!! my fave. Sorry for missing two weeks, been busy! Only 3 more chapters of the sequel (also there's a hint to the next chapter at the end of this one wink)
Prev / Next / Masterlist
Our Day Off
---
Nowadays, Marinette and Adrien rarely slept in. They were constantly going with work and life, but they decided to treat themselves today by getting extra sleep. The rebrand is almost complete, meaning both Adrien and Marinette will get to breathe for a few days. The main stuff was done, like the website, displays, tags, and business cards, among other smaller things.
He was getting a little nervous, but excited, as the final day got closer. They planned a fashion show to truly ring in the new era of Agreste Fashion, now called Emilie's, with Marinette and her team's line as the first official Emilie's line. They also reworked some fan-favorite clothing to make them fit the brand better while getting rid of Gabriel's name. It was going to be an exciting day, seeing the old and the new mix together. But there were still a few weeks until that day; there was still work to be done.
However, it was Saturday, and both Marinette and Adrien decided they could have a few extra hours of sleep. Adrien rolled out of bed earlier than Marinette and went to the kitchen to start breakfast. It was nothing crazy, just some eggs, because they agreed to stop by their favorite bakery to see her parents and enjoy a well-deserved macaron. Or two.
Marinette followed him into the kitchen when she smelled the eggs, her hair still unbrushed and in her pajamas. "Smells good, Adrien," She yawned.
"I'm glad. Time for a quick breakfast so we can go see your parents," He said as he slid the plate over to her seat.
Marinette nodded and took a bite. "You know, I was thinking," She said, carefully. "I wanted to put up a video like we used to do. Maybe we could vlog our day, or at least some of it? One of our first days in a long time that we haven't been so busy with work. Heck, I don't think either of us has had a day out of the office in at least two weeks."
A big smile formed on Adrien's face. "I think that's a great idea, Mari!" He hopped up and walked to the corner of the living room that had Marinette's desk. He grabbed her camera battery off the charger, then her camera bag, and brought it back over. Marinette would have gotten it herself, but sometimes, Adrien beats her to it.
She thanked him for the camera as she got her settings flipped to the right ones, then held it up. "Hi! I'm Marinette!" She waved at the camera, with Adrien waving behind her. "I know I look like a mess right now, but on our day off, we wanted to vlog! It's been so long since I've done a video like this, so I'm excited to give you guys some insight on how we've been recently."
"I made eggs," Adrien held his place up with a big grin when Marinette paused.
"And they're lovely, thank you, Adrien," Marinette admired. He set his plate back down, clearly proud of himself.
"Well, we're going to finish breakfast, then head over to our favorite bakery in the world! I'm sure we'll check back in then," Adrien said, Marinette nodding with him, and she shut the camera off.
Marinette and Adrien finished their eggs quickly and got their morning routines done. They were out the door by eleven o'clock, which to most people meant they barely slept in, but sleeping past eight was glorious for them.
Marinette got the camera back out when they were in the car. It wasn't too far of a drive to get to her parent's, but it was just long enough that the car was needed, and she had some time to talk to her camera. "We're in the car now, and let me just say, my stomach has been aching for some sweets recently. We've been so busy we haven't had time to go get anything other than what's in our fridge or the late-night store around the corner from Emilie's," Marinette rambled.
"Well, when we get to work at six or seven in the morning, and we stay past dinner time, we don't have the time to go there, and most other places are closed when we head out," Adrien said. "Don't get me wrong, I love what we're doing, but it sure is tiring."
"Once the rebrand is done, hopefully we'll have a more normal schedule," Marinette said. "Long days, but it'll be worth it."
Adrien agreed. They continued rambling about work all the way until they parked near the bakery. It had only been a few weeks since she last saw her parents, but it was always nice to see them and talk about life, no matter how long it had been. Her parents tried to stuff them full of all kinds of sweets while listening to Marinette talk about how excited and exhausted she was about her team's line, and Adrien talked about how pleased he is with changing the brand to remember his mom. They had front row seats to the fashion show, and couldn't wait to see it all come alive.
Marinette did record some of her parents and the bakery, but they just talked most of the time. They closed for lunch, so there was all the time they needed before Marinette and Adrien had to leave; well, they didn't want the bakery to be closed for the whole day.
They ran a few errands, like grabbing a few groceries, and Marinette can never resist picking up some swatches when they pass her favorite store. They checked out a few shops that should have received the new displays and were able to see them getting set up.
What was truly special, though, was their evening. They ordered a pizza for a movie night so they could fully relax. Plagg snacked on his cheese while Tikki sat in her little bed on the table so Marinette and Adrien could finish setting up. Marinette walked over to the hidden safe in the closet and opened it, pulling out the special box. She set it on the coffee table and opened it, letting all the Kwamis out to play.
Usually, she tries to let them out at least once a week. But with them being so busy lately, it has been a lot less. The Kwamis love her and Adrien and understand; they're just excited to come out to see them and Plagg and Tikki, and they were even more excited to hear about movie night. A strange idea to their magical creatures, but they all seemed to love it all the same. Though they did miss Trixx, Pollen, and Wayzz, the rest of them knew they were having a good time with their masters, and they were able to enjoy themselves.
Marinette scrolled through the streaming services to find the perfect movie while all the Kwamis got comfortable around the couch and little pet beds. As she waited for Adrien to come back from the kitchen with pizza boxes and their drinks, she pulled out her camera for one last update to their vlog.
"Well, here we are to end the night! Adrien and I are relaxing with a movie and pizza, and it's a great way to end our first full day off. It's a nice break, but I'm excited to get back to work. Can't wait for all of you to see what we've been working on!" She said. Marinette was extra thankful that Kwamis are not visible on camera, because it would have looked crazy with all the little animals sat around her.
"I can't either!" Adrien popped in, setting the food on the table, then kissing Marinette's cheek. "This was fun; we should make more videos when we have time."
"I would love it, and I'm sure they would, too," Marinette gestured to the camera. "But that's it for today. Make sure to follow us in the description and be ready for some more videos, hopefully soon!" Marinette said, and both of them waved as she ended the recording. She would have to find time to edit it, maybe tomorrow before work.
Marinette and Adrien began digging into the pizza as she pressed play on the movie; both she and Adrien cuddled up to one another, all the Kwamis filled in around them.
As always, she was ecstatic to see some of the replies on the video. It was one of the things she missed most about not uploading as often.
I've missed these type of videos so much! I would LOVE more when you guys aren't busy!!
Seeing them happy makes me so happy. I'm so glad their lives are turning out great after everything they dealt with as teenagers
did you guys see that those guys who forced them into lb and cn got charged? DESERVED! But I'm so glad you guys are alright after that, it looks like you had a fun day
PLEASE TELL ME YOURE GOING TO RECORD ALYA AND NINOS WEDDING I CANT WAIT FOR THEM TO GET MARRIED ITS GOING TO BE BEAUTIFUL
I can't wait to say I have clothes from Emilie's! Such a beautiful meaning behind the name change and I can't wait to own a Marinette design from Emilie's instead of Agreste Fashion. We knew this day would come! (I know she's been designing for them for a while, but this is different guys)

A Vulgar First Impression of Coromon
Playing Pokémon games recently has been something akin to hiring a fairy princess to perform for your daughter’s birthday parties. The first few times she came around were fun, she made all the kids laugh and play their games, but now the princess has grown lazy, idly watching YouTube while disinterestedly mumbling the same four or five lines she’s been spouting for the past twenty-three years. But you keep hiring her regardless, even though your daughter’s trying to point out that she’s not into princesses anymore because she’s pushing 30, and you’re starting to think she might not be worth three hundred bucks a visit. And she’s starting to smell.
So as the Pokémon community sits and waits for the Diamond and Pearl remakes, because what is Pokémon if not a prolonged exercise in nostalgia bait, some indie developers have been trying their hand at doing Pokémon, but properly this time. First came along TemTem, which was, “Like Pokémon but online”, and now there’s Coromon, which is “Like Pokémon” and that’s it.
I’ll admit, I was attracted to Coromon not because of any underlying nostalgia or a want to replay Pokemon, but because the devs put out a free demo for the game, which is a rarity in this modern age of Early Access and delayed release dates. Intrigued, I decided to take a closer look, to see which warts they cut off and which ones they allowed to fester.
The game starts with our protagonist waking up in a small town with his mother about to go get his OR HER first Pokémon. So far, so standard. But where Coromon differs is that you aren’t some apple-cheeked youngster with a criminally neglectful parent, but a college kid who’s been selected for a prestigious university that studies Pokémon – sorry – “Coromon”. And incidentally, Pokémon scores the first point for having a name that actually means something. They’re monstrous creatures that can be caught in a ball and put in your pocket – “Pocket”-“Monsters”. What the fuck does Coromon mean? Because Coro only has a meaning if it’s in Italian, and I’m pretty sure these things aren’t meant to be called “Choir Monsters!”
Anyway, a dude in a wheelchair who was apparently the guy in charge gives you a magic glove and tells you about these glowing elemental orbs, which are important for some reason I wasn’t clear on, and he sends you out on a journey to collect more by finding six elemental titans and – as far as I understood the process – murdering them and stealing their essence in the name of science.
We choose our first Pokémon from a choice between the fire-type, the water-type or the… ice type? And then, we set out on our journey to fight trainers, make new friends, and shuffle about in the grass for an hour because your gobblefrog isn’t level sixty-two yet.
The first thing that struck me about Choirmon is that it really isn’t being coy with its desire to ape Pokémon. Everything, right down to the statistics of each monster, is identical to the way Pokémon does things. The types have the same names, evolving is still called evolving, it even gives you berries and other items for your monsters to hold. You can battle monsters in the wild, blundering into tall grass to scare them out of hiding and capturing them after beating them into a bloody pulp, or you can battle monsters owned by other trainers in unregulated dog fights. So it isn’t trying to be like Pokémon, it is Pokémon. It stabbed Pokémon in an alleyway, cut off its skin and is now swanning about performing a perverted Face/Off act.
Now, I love Pokémon just as much as the next guy, but I’m no deluded fanboy. Pokémon is not perfect. In fact, it’s a game with a lot of flaws. And in its desire to imitate, Collectamon inherits a lot of the same problems that Pokémon does. Using items, for example, takes up an entire turn, and while this can be forgiven in a party-based RPG, where you have other actors to make up for the guy losing a turn, you can only put out one monster at a time, and using anything other than a healing item in the thick of battle just makes you an open target.
Trying to think strategically is also a lost cause, because again, it’s fucking Pokémon. The only strategy is “use whatever the opponent is weak to” or “mash attack until one of you dies”. And while you could argue that Pokémon’s strong point is its simplicity, it does mean that winning a fight is more a matter of patience than a matter of skill.
At time of writing, I’ve been playing the demo for 7 hours. An impressive run-time for a demo, to be sure, and that’s only up to the first boss. Incidentally, it’s in that area that we meet the evil team of this game, because Pokémon had evil teams, and so must we! I don’t even understand their motivation, or who these people even are! They’re presented to us as if we already know what their deal is and why we should hate them. All I know about them is their name and the fact that they like to hang around in caves. Pitch-black ones that you navigate by wandering around aimlessly getting lost in the samey-looking environments.
Really, guys? You thought it’d be a good idea to preserve one of the shittiest areas in Pokémon? Actually, they follow it up with an even shittier level that plays like the gym leaders from the annoying puzzle gyms got together and tried to devise the most efficient backtracking machine, culminating in a game of Mastermind out of fucking nowhere.
Well, so far I’ve just been going on about how the game is the same as Pokémon. What’s different? Well, for a start, each monster has a well of stamina points that they spend to use their special abilities, limiting how many times you can use those moves before your monster has to have a little rest. So you have to weigh up whether or not you want to waste stamina using that really powerful move or whether you want to keep a steady pace with the weaker moves. Except, Pokémon already did that with each move having limited uses. So we haven’t gone anywhere. All we’ve done is paint the walls a different colour.
Erm… what else? Well, your character speaks for one thing, despite you being able to name them and customise them to your liking. I think we tried the talking player avatar thing back in Fallout 4, and it was just as unimmersive back then too. It means that you don’t really get to impose your own character on the avatar, because the avatar makes his OR HER own decisions without your input, accepting every single quest that gets handed to you without even flirting with a dialogue box because it means oh so much to them to help this random faceless NPC, whose unique name and appearance does nothing to make him feel any less forgettable.
…Ah, that’s something different. There’s a quest system. I’m not sure why. In an open world game, quest systems give the game a structure and a reason to explore the world. But, as we’ve established, Crackmon is Pokémon, and so progression is strictly linear. It’s hard to tell just how much it’ll impact the game, since it’s just a four-hour demo, but a quest system like this can easily turn into a to-do list of tedious tasks for rewards that you don’t need. One of the sidequests early on had me capture a pissweasel for some guy, only for the bloke’s mentor to smack him across the head and have him hand the pissweasel right back! This is the very definition of wasting my fucking time! The only reason I caught that pissweasel was for your quest, and I don’t want to deal with its incontinence issues!
Another way that Cloacamon tries to differentiate itself is though its Potential mechanic. Get this – whenever your pet cockcrab reaches a certain XP interval, you get to directly increase its stats by a total of 3 points, on top of the cockcrab’s normal stat increases, so you don’t have to muck around with effort values and breeding to optimise your stats. Each monster also has a “Potent” and “Perfect” form, with each form reaching these intervals sooner than the normal version of the cockcrab. So the game encourages you to abandon your monsters frequently, exchanging them for their shiny, better versions, which I would argue goes against the whole point of Pokémon. At its core, Pokémon is a game about going on a journey and creating a bond with your tag team of beasts, a bond which is impossible to form if you’re encouraged to chuck your friends in the bin the second you find their better, newer models.
I could go down my list of subtle differences, most of which are quality of life changes, like the ability to evolve mid-battle, or the ability to swap out different moves instead of permanently forgetting them, or the fact that you use HM moves yourself instead of teaching them to your Pokémon. But I’d rather finish this first impression by once again re-iterating that Cocaniumon is just Pokémon. It’s not writing any new rules, it’s not even reworking old ones, and it seems content to merely lie on its back and spin its wheels. And while you could argue that Pokémon’s formula doesn’t need to be changed, I would argue right back that not having the ambition to change has long been part of the fucking problem!
If all you want is more Pokémon but with less bullshit, then go ahead and give Coromon a try. Personally, I wasn’t motivated to continue playing past the first boss fight. Part of the problem was that I had no idea what I was ultimately working towards. Collect all the titan essences, so that we can research them! Research them for what? So we can finally uncover the mystery behind shitty Netflix sci-fi originals?

SAGE 2020: The Usual Suspects
Tumblr media
Hi, folks! Back when I used to work at TSSZ a lot of people really enjoyed reading my articles where I’d talk about various games at the Sonic Amateur Games Expo (SAGE), and I’ve gotten more requests in the last month and a half to continue doing those types of articles than I think I’ve ever gotten about anything else I’ve ever done before. So, here we are!
But I also need to be real with you: there are a lot of games at SAGE. It was exhausting enough when there were 70, 80, or even 90 games. Heck, the one year I wrote about 85-something games by myself, I sort of felt like I was going to die. This year, there are over 220 games at SAGE. It is physically and emotionally impossible for me to talk about everything, and it may even be impossible for me to play everything. Things will fall through the cracks. Most things, probably. Though I am responsible for basically inventing SAGE 20 years ago, I am also a human. I have my limits, and I am sorry it has to be this way.
Structurally, we’re going to be doing things a little bit differently, and you should expect this to be a little fast and loose. Since I’m not talking about every single game on the show floor, articles are going to be broken up into types:
“Usual Suspects” will be for games that either appeared at previous SAGEs or that I’m at least aware of.
“Fan Games” should be obvious, and it’s whatever doesn’t fall under Usual Suspects.
“Indies” is the same deal, but for original games.
And finally, there will be a “Honorable Mentions” article for whatever random leftovers I don’t cover in the first three articles. Looking forward to me talking about your game, but I don’t mention it? Tell me about it and maybe it’ll end up here.
Without any more delay, let’s talk about those Usual Suspects...
Sonic GT
Tumblr media
Sonic GT has always been kind of a difficult game to control, but usually it just took a little bit of getting used to. There was always a period of adjustment, where you had to learn the game’s quirks. But, over time, I feel like the game is also just getting… quirkier. Every time I come back to this, I slam head first into the Sonic GT’s learning curve, and it always feels just a little bit steeper. This is one of those games that tries to fit a lot of abilities into a tiny amount of buttons. It works, but it feels like you have to memorize an operator’s manual. It’s all about figuring out which button to hold when to get what state. But, man… when it clicks into place, it’s still kind of magic. And, at the very least, the levels have all been reworked to take better advantage of Sonic’s high-flying, death-defying acrobatics. You’ve just got to be willing to learn. The real downside of this new version is the inclusion of a proper story mode -- I don’t have anything against having cutscenes in your game or whatever, but for the purposes of reviewing these games, some ability to fast forward through the talking heads so I could get back to the gameplay would’ve been nice. You can skip ahead in cutscenes you’ve already watched, but that doesn’t help when it’s your first time through. Oh well. So it goes. (Update: in the process of getting this article posted, Sonic GT has been patched to make cutscenes always skippable.)
Project SXU (Sonic X-treme Unity)
Tumblr media
Another year, another Sonic X-treme recreation. This one’s interesting because it seems to be the most “complete” yet, offering the four most famous levels: Jade Gully, Crystal Frost, Red Sands and Death Egg. Intentionally or unintentionally, this also seems to replicate quite a few quirks we’ve seen in Sonic X-treme’s controls in the videos that have been released of the in-development build. Which means that it, uh, kind of sucks to play. I realize that’s kind of rude, but I’m sort of allowed to say that. 15 years ago, I was basically the only person on the internet that cared what happened to Sonic X-treme, so... I started contacting developers, starting with the game's producer, Mike Wallis. He lead us to Chris Senn, and that broke the dam on information about this game. Now, I don’t claim ownership over everything that came out of this, I’m simply saying I was the one who got the ball rolling. I watched the mystery of Sonic X-treme slowly get uncovered with as much intent as one could possibly have. It is a fascinating piece of lost media, but as a game… well, I think it got canceled for a reason. SXU shows us a clear vision of that, with a game that’s disorienting to look at and hard to control. Heck, if you’re using a controller, you can’t even use the analog stick -- you have to use a d-pad, leading to controls that feel frustratingly twitchy. But that's true to the experience. I probably spent almost as long in this demo accidentally slipping into bottomless pits as I did exploring its levels. Again, this more or less feels accurate to what we’ve seen in videos, though I do think Sonic probably feels a little too sensitive, here. Regardless, it’s still absolutely fascinating.
“Sonic Infinity Engine” Games
I’m cheating a little bit, here. This is technically three entries, but it’s in “Usual Suspects” because there’s been Infinity Engine games at SAGE for a few years now. Listen, it’s my site, my rules, and we’re playing fast and loose, baby!
Adventure Pack 2
Tumblr media
This claims to be a “pack” of multiple levels, but the one level I played went on for over 25 minutes without showing any signs of ending. The level is… well, it’s the kind of stuff we’ve seen at SAGE for years and years and years, a space previously occupied by SonicGDK and BlitzSonic before it, where somebody is clearly starting out learning 3D level design, has some prefab assets, and goes to town creating a huge, intricate environment… that doesn’t fit a Sonic game at all. Too many tight spaces, too much enemy spam, and too much labyrinthine pacing. This is “Sonic Visits Anor Londo,” and while it looks interesting visually, it’s easy to get lost, or worse, killed because something isn’t functioning right. Like a lot of Infinity Engine stuff, it’s a bit hit or miss.... And now, also cramped.
Infinity+ Colorful Combat
Tumblr media
The primary goal of this seems to be to update the Infinity Engine with extra features, something that I think is pretty welcome. The Infinity Engine is okay, but it’s missing a little bit of polish that the original developer neglected to give it before abandoning the project. This helps tighten some of that stuff up, while also introducing Wisp powers and more playable characters. Some of the new characters could still use some work, yet, but given the project is still in active development, that’s pretty much a guarantee. This could end up being the defacto version of the Sonic Infinity Engine.
Sonic Reforge: Red Ridge (Blockout)
Tumblr media
This is what’s called a “Grey Box.” Rather than build out a fully-detailed level, you get a rough estimate on how the stage will flow before you put all the graphics in. What’s here is okay, I guess, but the level loops back on itself in ways that can be kind of confusing. There are a few places where it’s not really clear where you’re supposed to go next, and I spent several minutes running in circles. I’m also not a huge fan of the changes to Infinity’s physics; jumping off of ramps is a key part of the Sonic experience, but there are several places here where that doesn’t work -- to get the height needed to progress, you just need to roll really fast. It works, but it doesn’t feel like the Sonic I’m familiar with.
Sonic World DX
Tumblr media
I have a bit of history with this game. Or, well, with a different version of this game. I wasn’t kind to some of the original entries at SAGE many years ago, but over time, they’ve cleaned the game up and streamlined it a fair amount. Now we have the “DX” release, a further cleanup effort splintered off from the main project, but to be honest, I’m not entirely sure what’s different from the previous release. The main version of Sonic World supports an absolutely gargantuan amount of content, with 50 playable characters and at least that many levels. It was big, and weird, and impressive. This demo ships with three or four playable characters and eight stages. Beyond that, there’s not much else to say -- it’s still Sonic World, though this release doesn’t work right with my controller. It picks up the controller binds from the main version of Sonic World, correctly assuming I’m using a DualShock 4, but none of the buttons are correct. When it asks me to press the X button, I have to press Circle for it to properly register. Not only that, but the right stick camera control is completely broken. Switching to an Xbox controller fixes the camera issues, but now the face buttons have the opposite problem: when it asks me to press A to jump, I have to press X. Throws my whole vibe off, like wearing your shoes on the wrong feet. The menus are bizarre, too -- while adjusting the volume, you can’t push left or right to adjust the levels, you have to use controller face buttons for some reason. This whole thing feels like I stepped back in time to 2013 in a bad way.
Sonic Freedom
Tumblr media
I feel like I’ve been waiting to see a major development from Sonic Freedom for half a decade at this point. The art considerations for this game are no joke, and I do not envy anyone trying to make a proper high-def 2D Sonic game that looks this good. But, well… it’s another year, and there’s not a lot here. It plays fine, I guess -- the controls are decent, at least. The problem is the level design. Does this level even end? I’m not sure. I know previous demos for Sonic Freedom have had more than one level, but the stage you start out in here is a confusing, empty labyrinth with respawning enemies and a finite number of rings. You climb up and up and up, but eventually I reached what felt like a dead end. Visually it will always look incredible, but I’m wondering if it’ll ever actually become a game at any point in the future.
BraSonic 20XX
Tumblr media
Here’s a strange blast from the past I wasn’t expecting. BraSonic is an old fangame from probably more than a decade and a half ago. It was so long ago that I can’t even actually remember if I played the old version of the game or not, but I definitely remember the name. What really throws me for a loop playing the 20XX version now is how much it feels like a game from back in the early 2000’s. The artwork, the sound effects, the locations, all of it makes me feel like I’m 19 again. Thankfully, this doesn’t play like a fangame from 2004; physics seem pretty solid, level design flows pretty well, and it generally seems to be fun, weird, and most importantly, unique. There aren’t many fan games here at SAGE that open with their first boss fight being against Sonic the Hedgehog. If you find yourself getting burnt out from so many Sonic fan games feeling same-y, this could be a good change of pace.
Sonic Frenzy Adventure
Tumblr media
Maybe it’s the fact that this is the 20th Anniversary of the Sonic Amateur Games Expo, but here’s another very old fangame coming back out of the woodwork for an enhanced modern re-release. This game was a mainstay of the mid-to-late 2000’s SAGE events, after which it disappeared before being finished. Well, maybe it was finished. Again, a lot of this stuff was so, so, so long ago that this poor old man’s memory just can’t recall it. Seeing Frenzy Adventure back warms my heart, though. It’s an old friend in what has proven to be a very challenging year. Admittedly, parts of it still feel a bit mid-2000’s, but I consider those charming quirks. Throwbacks to a simpler era. At the very least, controls have been improved, so it does play better than the old releases did. Good stuff. Glad to see you again, dude.
Sonic Speed Course
Tumblr media
This was a game that turned up last year, but in the kerfuffle I didn’t get around to trying it, even though I really wanted to. This is clearly a game inspired by Kirby’s Dream Course, but instead of Nintendo’s pink puffball, we have Sonic and friends. Whereas Kirby gained abilities by bowling through enemies, this adapts a more traditional Sonic gameplay structure of item boxes filled with shields and other powerups. But here’s my deep dark secret: even though I love Kirby’s Dream Course in concept, there’s a part of me that feels an intense hatred for that game. I have distinct memories of renting Kirby’s Dream Course as a kid and getting really far into the game, but trying to play it as an adult I’m baffled at how difficult it is. The main problem I have is that every stroke you take subtracts from your health, meaning you can only hit the ball so many times before you just… die. This makes for a very, very steep learning curve that discourages play and experimentation. Every shot truly, deeply matters and eventually I find myself caught in a death spiral and staring at the game over screen. All of this is replicated in Sonic’s Speed Course, which, much like with Kirby, I find myself drawn to like a moth to the flame -- only to come away feeling dejected and like I’m just not good enough. For fans of Kirby’s Dream Course, this is undoubtedly good news, as this means Sonic Speed Course is faithful to the tone of that game. But I find myself wishing there was a practice mode or something that let me play these courses without the punitive health system, because I’m ready to love them.
Sonic: Triple Trouble 16-Bit
Tumblr media
When you write about so many games at SAGE every year, things start to blur together... a lot. I seem to recall that Triple Trouble 16-Bit last year was good, but had room for improvement. Well, this year, this demo feels… really quite good. I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical about remaking this game. Sonic: Triple Trouble was among the first batch of Game Gear games I ever owned as a kid, and while I liked the game, in my adulthood, I feel like I’ve come to appreciate Sonic Chaos more. But so much has been added to this game that it’s really come into its own. It uses Triple Trouble more as a jumping off point to become something fresh and interesting, and on top of that, this demo is pretty polished. This game was kind of always on my radar, but it’s really turning into something special.
Battle Cross Fever
Tumblr media
Every year, I download this game hoping for some kind of single player offering, and every year I’m let down. Battle Cross Fever is a fighting game that plays a lot like Smash Bros., but contains elements that pull it closer to traditional fighting games like Street Fighter. It’s the kind of game that can check with the server to make sure you’re playing the latest version, but doesn’t have true online multiplayer -- instead advertising that you should use a piece of screen sharing software like Parsec to accomplish online multiplayer. In their defense, the few times I’ve used Parsec, it’s basically been magic for how well it works. But I just want, like… anything that I can play by myself. Even if it’s just a super basic arcade mode with brain dead AI, anything is better than nothing. But, I suppose, I am an outlier. Judging by the horrific character select music I landed on, Battle Cross Fever has enough of a community that they could get fans to sing along to “Ghost Town” from Sonic Forces -- which is a fun idea, don’t get me wrong, but when you have loud voices over cheap microphones, well… I hope you aren’t wearing headphones like I was. Anyway, this game’s always seemed solid, but I’ve also never played it with another human being, so really, I’m speaking from the perspective of admiring the diverse roster and all of the fun arenas they’ve ported in. Maybe someday it’ll get some single player content.
I’ll be back with another article… uh, eventually. In truth, I was only going to feature five games here, but it ended up being ten, so we’ll see how many are in future articles when we get there!

Here's just the all text version of everything I found interesting from the PH:SH listening party earlier today.
The typing promt for chat was "Speak your mind"
Parasite Eve
The Sneeze in Parasite Eve is actually Jordan
The lyric was initially - 'if we survive the infection' and was switched to 'when we forget the infection' as the pandemic all started to get very real
The music video was shot without the band ever being together, it was Oli + one other on rotation social distancing in the midst of lockdown.
The opening Bulgarian folk choir sample is from an old TV recording of a performance on YouTube
(Jordan gave us the link in chat a bit later, you'll have to copy and paste it cause if i make it a link this is un searchable but here it is www.youtube.com/watch?v=vonvFS-PfJQ )
The "Please remain calm" robot voice is Oli's wife Alissa
Teardrops
Oli had to spend about four hours underwater for the video shoot
There's an actual elephant sampled in this track
We had wanted to get a rain machine for the video but it ended up raining that night so it's real
Oli also mentioned that this was his favorite from the album
Obey
The robots in the video weren't actually Oli and Yungblud it was dancers
Oli: Fun fact: thats not me dancing
Oli: another fun fact: I actually dance like this if you give me enough moscow mules
Mat N: its me and Lee in the suits
Oli: another fun fact: Jordan wrote one of the lyrics in this song
Oli: a first
Itch for the Cure
This was made out of Mick Gordon's parts for Kingslayer and reworked into an interlude
Oli recorded the monologue the day before we handed in the EP
Kingslayer
Kingslayer was started back in January 2020 in Amsterdam
For the initial demo we pitched up one of our voices so we could sing the BABYMETAL parts in the melody we had in mind in their style
Oli: influences on this one range from slipknot, uk happy hardcore, anime theme tunes and the matrix
Then I missed the first anime thing he mentioned but the rest were
Oli: and i loved first season of tokyo ghoul
Oli: and one punch man :P
Oli: akira obviously is the best ever
BABYMETAL offered to do their version in English and we wanted it to be in their native language as we love Japan
The scream at the end was influenced by the sound where you go down the telephone in The Matrix (going down the rabbit hole - are you ready?)
And Oli had said something along the lines about the song going (something along the lines of) "proper ******* neo" (the chat didn't allow swearing and would censor everyone except as we came to find out later Jordan)
1x1
We had discovered Nova Twins on Spotify in lockdown
Both Oli and Jordan had confirmed at the same time that the title is said 1 by 1 and not 1 x 1 and that its even said in the song
This track was initially called 'Archenemy'
Oli: this song was some deep trip for me
Oli: too dark
Ludens
We shot the music video in Burbank in LA on a day off from tour. It almost had to be pulled as the LA fires were only a few miles away from the studio
The screech sound in the second verse a 1.19 is a little nod to Kojima as it's the stealth sound when you get discovered in Metal Gear Solid
The chat kept asking Oli if he had played or enjoyed Death Stranding and his only reply was
Oli: hideo 4 lyfe
(Jordan also said he had played the game)
Also they mentioned the version on Spotify is the Clean version and to hear the explicit version you gotta get the album
One Day The Only Butterflies Left Will Be In Your Chest As You March To Your Death
This was a super old lyric idea that Oli was keen to get into a track but it never fitted before
Oli: yo ive been trying to get the song title in a song for time
Amy encouraged Oli to keep his initial demo in for his verse
Once the album finished the first time Oli announced a second round
Oli: lets GO AGAIN
This is where shenanigans began
Jordan: last saw everyone at teardrops shoot
When asked who would be a dream collab Jordan said
Jordan: would like to collab with all the legends
Jordan: ozzy
Jordan: crazytown
Jordan: Mozart
Jordan: aha
Oli: cant wait to play this live!!!
(About Kingslayer)
People were getting upset that they couldn't swear without it being censored and were trying to find ways around it then Jordan found out he could swear
Jordan: shit
Jordan: fuck
Jordan: I can say fuck and you can't
Jordan: fuck fuck fuck fuck
Oli: jordan's always being bad
Jordan: listen its the second playthrough
Jordan: I'm runny out of things to say
Oli: haahaha
Jordan: there IS a discord
Jordan: for anyone that wants to join I'll get the link
Jordan: discord.gg/YUXhQmq9
and when people didn't see the link in the other area he called us all bozos
When everyone was losing their minds about where Oli was and asking if he was still there
Oli: Hiiiii
Then Jordan got left alone with all of us
Jordan: honestly mantra is one of my favorite songs we've ever done
Jordan: parasite eve, obey, teardrops, kingslayer, dear diary, Ludens, all have to be in set
Jordan tasked us with making a dream 20 song set list and then made one of his own (in no particular order he said)
Jordan: shadow Moses cyfmh house of wolves sleepwalking antivist doomed Happy song Follow you Drown Mantra Nihilist blues Wonderful life Medicine Dear diary Parasite eve Teardrops Obey Kingslayer Ludens
Jordan: and then I went old school
Jordan: Chelsea smile and it never ends

Thoughts On: Heretic
Tumblr media
Earlier this year, just before the beginning of quarantine, I played a little game called AMID EVIL, something I would not have done were it not for the enchanting video skills of YouTuber Civvie 11. In his video, Civvie demonstrated the awesomeness of the retro shooter, both in graphics and gameplay, and since I was jonesing for something a little more dark fantasy than I was used to, I decided to give it a try. The game is a thrilling rush, and worthy of its own post here, but that game was a segue into me finally picking up and playing a game series that I had been intrigued by for nearly twenty some odd years: the Heretic and Hexen games.
AMID EVIL owes a lot to these games; in fact, it's not much of a leap to say that it owes everything to these games. It's even less of a leap to say that most first person shooters, whether dark fantasy or no, owe a lot to these games. Raven Software introduced a monster of a franchise when they dropped Heretic in December of 1994, working in collaboration with id Software as Raven was creating their games using the DOOM engine (or, as I think we're calling it now, “id tech 1”). John Romero helped in-house, giving advice on how to work with the engine, which was instrumental for Raven to push id tech 1 to its limits. They made changes to the engine which eventually became staples in other FPS games: an inventory system, translucent objects, pushable objects, the ability to look up and down, and the ability to fly. While the game itself was objectively a reskinned version of DOOM, it was stylish and engaging and reworked the most popular game engine at the time. In short, it won accolades in no small amount, and sealed itself in history as a high watermark for boomer shooters, hell, for PC gaming in general. So when we're looking backwards into the foggy past of our ancestors, is Heretic a game that we, in the Year of Our Lord Gaben 2020, should consider playing, either for the first time or as a throwback? Roll up your sleeves, party people, we've got a deep one to dive into today. Because we can't simply look at Heretic alone; oh, no. We're going to have to look at the whole franchise.
Heretic is not a complicated game per se, but it has a lot of tricks up its sleeve. We have the standard issue Run-Gun-Have-Some-Fun gameplay that Wolfenstein and DOOM brought to the table. There's three keys of different colors – yellow, green, and blue – there's a variety of weapons that almost line up point-for-point with DOOM's stack of damage inducers, and there's a horde of enemies that are around every corner waiting for you to come out magic blazing. But where DOOM has a mostly straightforward path from point A to point B, Heretic is a trickster which can and will give cause to tear one's hair out. Secret doors, invisible walls, fake walls, and hidden switches are everywhere, which means that nine times out of ten you'll either be consulting your map to figure out where the fake walls are, or you'll be pressing the space bar on every surface to see if it will open or activate something useful. Raven did a bit of a whammy on the game, setting up the simplistic stuff to lure you in, as though promising a hot night out with the kind of experience you think that you're used to, but then they strap you in for the kinky stuff that you always imagined you'd be into, but now that we're here you're not so sure. Make no mistake, I did consult a walkthrough at least once, maybe twice if I'm remembering right, during my playthrough. And the game is punishing the deeper you get: enemies lie in wait immediately behind doors, around corners, hidden out of sight or just above you since some of them can fly, and as your limited ammunition dwindles down into the red, you'll be forced into running risk-and-reward of melee weapons and inventory items to keep moving. Fortunately, each weapon has its own ammo stock, and some enemies are more susceptible to different weapon types. Adding to the bonus in the player's favor are inventory items that boost weapon damage, specifically the Tome of Power which magnifies the current weapon's attack power into a secondary fire that more often than not is absolutely brutal. But, unlike future entries in this series, the motto of the day is: Keep Moving, Keep Shooting, Don't Stop Moving, Don't Stop Shooting. It's Fun, Fast, and Furious in an entertaining way that only occasionally leaves you pondering why you even booted up the game this morning.
However you may feel about the gameplay itself, it can't be denied that the visual aesthetics and gamefeel are dripping with atmosphere. Everything from top to bottom feels like the best of cheesy 80's style fantasy art, from the front cover to final screen. Gloomy castles, underwater domes, craggy hellscapes. Weapons impress with over-the-top magical properties. The default staff acts like the DOOM pistol, lobbing nearly harmless yellow energy, while the Etheral Crossbow shoots multiple energy arrows at once, like a magic shotgun, easily the most versatile weapon in the game. Besides that one, my other favorite weapons are the Hellstaff (which blasts rapid-fire red energy, and causes acid rain to fall when Tomed up) and the Phoenix Rod (basically a magic rocket launcher that belches fire when overpowered). Depending on what you're facing, proper usage of these weapons (all finely drawn sprites, natch) can either chew through a mob with ease or leave you scrambling to get back. Stun lock Disciples with the Dragon Claw while obliterating Golems with the Crossbow; save the Phoenix Rod for big bads. And enemy creatures run the gamut from the simplistically annoying Gargoyles (red bat-winged creatures who also shoot fireballs) to the sturdy Golems (which come in a secondary variety which throw flaming skulls at you) to the Disciples of D'Sparil (faceless hooded monks who fly, chant, and shoot fireballs at you, on theme). Usually these damage sponges come at you in packs, rarely doing so in solo numbers because otherwise the game wouldn't be a DOOM clone. What really gets challenging is when boss creatures start popping up like regular enemies – in packs. Take the Iron Lich for example, a massive floating skull wearing a spiked helmet that throws walls of fire and tornadoes that do continual damage, they appear as a boss at the end of the final level of the first episode, then appear later on in groups. They take incredible amounts of damage and return fire constantly, which leads to a tense game of bobbing and weaving and staying as far away from them as possible. But the absolute worst is the Maulotaur. Basically, a minotaur that stands head and shoulders taller than the Iron Lich, carries a huge mace, and shoots waves of fire at you which can one-shot you if you're not paying attention. Staying away from them is key, but they can charge forward fast in order to close distance and take a few swings at you with the mace. These assholes also start as a final bosses, then appear as regular enemies surrounded by waves of other mobs. Maulotaurs are the dealbreakers of the game; they require ridiculous amounts of ammo to kill, and will force you through most of your inventory items if you're not already powered up. Thankfully, your inventory can hold quite a few helpful items, such as quartz flasks for health, the aforementioned Tomes of Power to boost weapon damage, invisibility spheres and wings of flight, and even motherfucking time bombs. But amongst all these, the most ridiculous and yet satisfying item is the Morph Ovum. Shaped like an egg, when used it gets thrown outward and whatever it hits is transformed into an easily killable chicken. Got a wave of monsters crowding too close and you need to thin the herd fast? Turn them into chickens, then turn them into fried chickens.
What gets me is that this game doesn't feel nearly as highly regarded as its indirect sequel, Hexen, and that's probably because for the most part this is a full-on DOOM clone. There were a lot of them back in the day, too many to count, and I think that if wasn't for the legacy of Raven and Hexen, this might have fallen through the cracks of history. Is it uninspired? No, not in the slightest. The quality of the spritework and animations are top notch, the production values are stellar, putting it just above the quality of the average obvious Doom clone. The amount of innovation, with the aforementioned inventory system and modifications to the engine, mesh well with the ambitious world/story crafted in the background of a single warrior trudging across worlds to defeat an evil tyrant who has taken over his people's lands. The current version on Steam is actually the second version released; initially, the game launched in 1994 with three episodes, the first one being the shareware version, and then later on in 1996 had a second physical release which added on two new episodes. It was like an expansion pack folded into the main game, and considering that Hexen was released in 1995, it makes sense that the two new episodes of Heretic feel so much more brutal in difficulty by comparison. And thematically it makes sense for them to have a higher base difficulty, since it’s about escaping the dark world you had to break into, and now you're crawling your way back out of it. Kind of a neat trick, having the hero beat the bad guy halfway through the story, then showing his journey to get back home. Hell, even the name of the main character is awesome. A later game in the series will reveal that his name is Corvus, but originally the character was simply referred to as The Heretic, and in a gaming landscape featuring such characters as Doomguy, the Quake Ranger, and the Doomslayer, the Heretic ought to stand right up there with the rest of them.
So is the game worth playing today? Absolutely. Any fan of boomer shooters or retro gaming in general should absolutely play this game. Utilizing DOSBOX (which the Steam release uses) is fine, but doesn't allow for the best playing experience currently. A quick download of GZDOOM to launch the game will give better controls, easier mouse compatibility, and smoother graphics. There's a method to tie GZDOOM into your Steam page so you can even track how long you've been playing it (for those who this is important for). And it's super cheap, meaning there's little to no excuse to not play it. So why then is this game sitting in the background, kind of like the little engine that could? You know, I'm doing my best to get into the meat and potatoes of this game, to be more descriptive of it and really entice you, the reader, into wanting to play this game. The powerups are fun, there are segments where you absolutely get to go apeshit on monsters and laugh hysterically while you do so, there are moments where the “AHA” is so enlighting that the relief is palpable. Some of the bosses are so memorable that to find them around the corner later in the game as minibosses – in multiple! – is downright frightening and adds to the risk/reward, since they're usually guarding something good that you want to pick up. Long story short, if you like DOOM, you'll like Heretic, which feels like selling the experience short. But the real reason I think Heretic is overlooked is because it is overshadowed by the more complex, more engaging, and more brutal Hexen.
If it hasn't become obvious yet, this is going to be a multi-part Thoughts On post. You've read Heretic, which is a fine game that does what it does and is memorable and fun and fine. But next, we're going to dive into the second course of this delicious fantasy meal, Hexen, and talk about how the second game in this series is the one that got everyone to sit up and take notice of what Raven Software was doing.

The Problem with Mal (part 3/3)
The Solution
This part of the essay is where we’re going to get into more opinion based stuff rather than facts or actual analysis, so if this is where you check out I don’t blame you. But I believe that with a little reworking the Descendants franchise could have reached its full potential story-wise. This reworking centers around one general idea:
The movies would have been better if Mal had not been the protagonist. Specifically, Evie should have been the protagonist of D1, Uma should have been the protagonist of D2, and they should have co-lead D3.
To truly discuss this thesis, we’re going to have to turn some literary techniques on its head. Bear with me everybody.
To start, let’s look at one particular literary device which I find most relevant to this discussion, that of a foil. Wikipedia defines a foil as “a character who contrasts with another character, usually the protagonist, to highlight qualities of the other character… A foil usually either differs dramatically or is extremely similar but with a key difference setting them apart.” Essentially, a foil provides a “what-if?” to another character, usually the protagonist.
Evie and Uma are both foils to Mal, but of different types. Evie’s character is radically different from Mal’s on both superficial and significant levels. On the other hand, Uma’s character is very similar to Mal’s, with a few key differences that make Uma a more compelling POV character. Unfortunately, while foils are usually intended to highlight positive qualities of the protagonist, Mal’s foils serve to show us what a missed opportunity the Descendants writers had.
Let’s compare and contrast Mal with these other two characters. We’ll start with Evie.
Motivation
What is Mal’s motivation throughout D1? In part one we decided her over-arching motivation is self-interest, specifically power and opportunity. However, if we look simply at D1, we can also see a different, more charitable motivation for her: To make her mother proud.
This is particularly interesting because it is one of the few places where Mal’s character and Evie’s intersect. As we’ve already noted, Mal and Evie are starkly different characters. Evie is more traditionally feminine, more sensitive, and shows more generally positive emotions like kindness and compassion than Mal does. In the background of many scenes (such as Mal’s dragon fight with Hades on the bridge in D3), Evie can be seen checking up on the other characters and making sure they are okay. Strangely enough, even though Mal is ostensibly the protagonist/POV character, we know more about who Evie is than Mal. Evie is, for some reason, gifted a rich inner life that even the main character is not allowed. We know Evie is interested in science and fairly adept at it, she is proficient in many homemaking activities such as sewing and cooking, and she helps Ben with the legislation for the VK project. We also know that she has a strong, steady relationship with her boyfriend that does not stop her from becoming a successful businesswoman who runs her own fashion line. The viewers are not actually told much about who Mal is beside her relationship with Ben and her talent with graffiti. Oh, and her middle name is Bertha I guess.
But for all these differences between these characters, the one place that they align is their D1 goals. Mal and Evie both go into the wand-stealing plan with the intention of making their mothers proud, but even though these motivations are the same on paper, I would argue that this motivation is better handled with Evie’s storyline than Mal’s.
Consider the relationships between Mal and her mother and Evie and her mother throughout D1. Unlike Evie, Mal is actually shown as having a sometimes-positive relationship with her mother. Maleficent pays her “compliments” (see: “That’s my nasty little girl”). She tells Mal that she intends for them to rule Auradon together with “matching thrones” and “hers and hers crowns.” There is even a whole song in D1 that revolves around Mal receiving encouragement from her mother, albeit an imaginary one.
On the other hand, The Evil Queen instilled in Evie anxiety over her physical appearance and relationship status and an intense inferiority complex. The only time she pays Evie a compliment comes when they are video chatting in front of the Fairy Godmother and all of the parents are putting on a facade. In their first scene together, Grimhilda charges Evie with “just finding (herself) a prince with a big castle” and then reprimands her for laughing because it will cause wrinkles.
As a consequence of this difference in parenting styles, Evie has a much stronger motivation to impress her mother than Mal does. Every decision that Evie makes in D1 is a result of this motivation, most notably in her side plot with Chad and Doug, whereas gaining Maleficent’s approval does not factor as heavily into Mal’s decision-making process, as seen in her relationship with Ben.
So it makes sense that given the two differing relationships between these daughters and mothers, Evie’s desire to impress her mother would be much stronger than Mal’s because she has never truly gotten it before. I’m not denying that Mal and Evie were both the victims of abusive parenting, and of course, in the real world, people respond to different levels of abuse in different but equally valid ways. However, in a Disney Channel Original Movie, a brand that is not known for its subtlety, it makes more sense that from a writing standpoint Evie has a much stronger motivation and a much higher stake in this wand-stealing plan.
Arc
If I were to ask a random Descendants fan what Mal’s arc in D1 was, what is the most likely answer I would receive? Probably that she learned to be good rather than evil, I imagine. What about Evie? Probably that she learned she didn’t need a prince to have value, or maybe not to change herself for a man. Now, based on D2 and D3, which of these characters actually fulfilled that arc?
We can’t say that Mal “learned to be good” because she never actually learned to be good. Whatever lesson Mal learned in D1 didn’t stop her from trying to magically manipulate Ben at the beginning of D2, or trying to permanently banish all the VKs to the Isle in D3. What’s the point of claiming to be on the side of good if your actions don’t corroborate that?
On the other hand, Evie experienced actual growth over the three movies. In D1, we saw her struggle to find validation somewhere other than the nearest available prince, but later learn that she could take pride in her academic capabilities and her aptitude for clothing design. In D2, she continued to build her business with support from her non-prince boyfriend, and later find a new purpose in the plights of the VKs who remained on the Isle. And finally in D3, although we saw more of her relationship with Doug, we also saw her continue to fight for the remaining VKs, building her relationship with Dizzy, and once again continuing to grow her fashion line.
Evie, unlike Mal, actually had one continuous arc with true upward growth. Now, imagine, if you will, what D1 would have looked like with the story shifted to center Evie instead of Mal. It would be a largely similar story, but with a few key changes that would enhance the overall quality.
Removing Mal as the main character of D1 would allow for some actual conflict within the group as well as outside of it. Imagine a core four, led by Evie, that features Mal as her questionably-aligned best friend/number two. Evie and the boys begin to experience doubts about the benefits of their plan, but throughout the movie, Mal remains strong, reminding them that they are “rotten to the core.” Evie is conflicted, with her innate desire to be good and love of the sanctuary Auradon provides warring with her desire to please her mother and her acknowledgment that Mal may have a point. At the finale, Evie, Carlos, and Jay make the decision to stand up for good, and Mal joins them begrudgingly but fondly. Wouldn’t that have been a better, richer conflict than the “Mal feels pulled between her evil habits and the boy she has a crush on” plotline that we got?
Evie is closer to Carlos and probably Jay than Mal is. We see this in all of her background actions, but wouldn’t it have been nice to see these relationships, and these characters, brought into the forefront of the story?
Evie’s general kindness, generosity, and dedication to doing the right thing make her a protagonist you can actually root for, but it also proves Ben’s original argument, and the argument of the whole movie, that the VKs are not predisposed to evil simply because of who their parents are. This argument rings a little hollow as the story stands because its main example is not actually a good person. With Evie in the center of this story, this theme is actually valid.
Positioning Evie as the main character also means that the next two villains of the movies are not direct results of the actions of the character who is supposed to be the protagonist.
Now let’s look at Uma, and how she compares to Mal. Uma’s character is particularly interesting because unlike Evie, she and Mal are very similar. There are, however, a few key differences that make her a more compelling protagonist than Mal
Motivation
This topic has been done to death in fandom, so I won’t dwell too deeply on it, but it’s no secret that Uma’s motivation was handled better than Mal’s at essentially every level. Uma’s story as it was shown in D2 was so well written, in fact, that I was surprised that it came out of a DCOM, and a sequel to boot. The writers did an excellent job of giving Uma a sympathetic, well-fleshed out, compelling character. The only place they fumbled was in remembering two-thirds of the way through that she was supposed to be the villain.
It is strange, however, that in a story that revolves around children finally being set free from an unfair life sentence of prison and poverty, that its villain’s motivation is to continue to liberate these children while its supposed main character actively works against this goal. It is even stranger that in D3, presumably after they saw the massive internet and fan reaction to Uma’s character and motivation, that they doubled down on this distinction instead of rectifying it.
Arc
This section was originally going to be on character arcs, but it is hard to analyze Uma’s
because she doesn’t really… have one. She doesn’t need one, because her character starts out from a place of moral superiority over Mal’s. It could be argued that in D3 she learns to work with others, but even that isn’t supported by the source material because she never actually had to learn that lesson. She already works fine with the rest of her pirate crew, the Sea Three, and even the original VKs, shown in her musical support of Evie during the “One Kiss” song, albeit with, again, a copious amount of eye-rolling. The only one she has a conflict with is Mal (for good reason) and she never truly had to learn to play nice with Mal or to amend her behavior at all because she was always in the right. That brings me to my true second point…
#umadeservedbetter/#umawasright, or, Actions
This is where we examine the actions of these two characters. On paper, Mal and Uma have very similar character traits, but the actions they take within those constraints prove them to be very different people.
Leadership
Mal and Uma are both hailed as leaders within their respective groups, to the point that there is an entire song in D3 that centers around them vying for leadership of their temporarily-combined groups. However, this comparison does not shine favorably on Mal’s leadership skills. Uma has followers because she fights for them. She works tirelessly to get them off the Isle, and then to get back to them when they are separated. Mal never shows this same care for Evie, Jay, or Carlos. When Harry struggles climbing out of the ocean during the big “It’s Goin’ Down” fight scene, Uma goes back to help him without a second thought, sacrificing her revenge in the process. Do we ever see any indication that Mal would make the same choice if it came down to her end goal vs. her friends?
2. Strategy
If you asked a random fan, they would probably say that Mal and Uma are pretty intelligent characters, and they would probably be right. Uma, however, is the only one with any tactical aptitude. In D2 Mal foolishly and callously rejects her friends’ help and goes to face Uma alone, where she is tricked into agreeing to trade Ben for the wand. Then later, Mal’s plan for how to trick Uma with the fake wand is to just “get him [Ben] out of there really fast,” which fails miserably. After that, her solution to every problem is “turn into a dragon,” which is only actually helpful one of the three times she does it. Uma on the other hand is a pretty efficient strategist. In D3 she captures Ben smoothly and only turns him back over after seeing a pretty convincing display of the fake wand’s power. In D3 every plan Uma suggests comes to fruition. In “Night Falls” she orders the group to hold the line in the back while she goes to the front, while Mal thinks they should take left and right sides, respectively. However, as the chorus and next verse start, you can clearly see that they ended up following Uma’s plan, albeit with her and Mal at the front instead of just Uma. Later she suggests that they split up and search Audrey’s dorm, which they do, and they end up finding her diary which leads them to her cottage. Mal herself acknowledges that this was a good idea. The only maybe strategically unsound decision that Uma makes (spelling Ben into falling in love with her which has historically not been successful) is a decision that Mal also made, so I can’t necessarily take points off of either one for that.
3. Choosing “Good”
We’ve already established that Mal has failed astronomically at actually, honestly, switching to the side of good, but Uma manages to start out at a higher ground than Mal and then grow from there. We see Mal pull stunts like taking candy from a baby, graffiting walls around the Isle, and kicking over the merchandise in the Isle’s bazaar/shopping center, but we never see Uma do anything like this, except maybe yell at a patron in the Chip Shoppe. She isn’t cruel to her crew for kicks; she doesn’t even throw Gil out when he calls her Shrimpy, Harry does that. Her motives have always been noble and inclusive of others besides herself. Then, we see her go through the only growth left to her in D3 when she puts her pride behind her to help Mal save Celia and defeat Audrey. We never see Mal go through this type of growth, with the possible exception of her deciding to free all the children and bring down the barrier at the end of D3… WHICH WAS UMA’S ENTIRE PLAN FROM THE JUMP OOOOOHHHH MY GOD WE HAD A WHOLE MOVIE TRYING TO PREVENT THIS VERY THING AND FOR WHAT? IS BRINGING DOWN THE BARRIER ONLY BAD WHEN UMA SUGGESTS IT? BUT NOW THAT IT’S MAL’S IDEA IT IS JUST A-OK I GUESS OOOOOHHH, MY GOD. #UMAWASRIGHT #UMADESERVESBETTER
Ahem. Anyway…
Were these movies framed differently, Evie and Uma would have been the protagonists from the start. Interestingly enough, Evie and Uma serve as foils to Mal both on a story level, and a real-world level. They serve not just as a what-if to Mal’s in-character decisions, but also as a “what if the writers had framed the story to match their writing?” Because here’s the thing, the writers knew what they were doing. They acknowledged Uma’s similarities to Mal as early as D2, with Ben’s “angry girl with a bad plan” comment, but then a few scenes later they chose to position her as a villain anyway. They knew that having Mal suggest closing the barrier permanently in D3 would position her against the rest of the VKs, particularly Evie, and they even wrote a beautiful disagreement for them that could have led to some actual growth for Evie and Mal’s characters. And then a few minutes later Evie, Jay, and Carlos have just… forgiven her, with basically no effort on Mal’s part. Most egregiously of all, they know that Mal did at the end of D3 exactly what Uma was trying to do for all of D2, and they treated Uma like a villain for it. They even have Uma’s character acknowledge this but have basically no problem with it!
This, I think, is why I had such a problem with Mal, and why it grew so aggressively. Bad writing is one thing, but bad writing that is self-aware and yet makes no motion to deal with itself is another. This is basically the end of this entirely-too-long meta/rant. I’ve never been good with conclusions, I just kind of… run out of things to talk about and deflate like a helium balloon. But if there are any points I missed, any other topics to discuss, feel free to let me know. I highly doubt anyone has actually finished this whole essay, but if you did, just know you’re my favorite person. Until next time I guess.

Why I WILL NOT buy Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
Yes, you read that headline right. The only chance of me buying this game is if it will be at a discounted price and I’m going to tell you why.
1. My worry that the beat mechanic will be half-assed.
The Kingdom Hearts series has a track record of having bad beat-based minigames in the past, and this is one of the main complaints of the entire series. People begged that Atlantica not be included or at least not a required music section in Kingdom Hearts III. This is simply because it sucked. The music wasn’t good, and the mechanic itself wasn’t that great or engaging either.
Some Kingdom Hearts music is really good, don’t get me wrong, but there are some songs that simply don’t care enough of a solid tune or beat in order to make a beat game out of it. The Agrabah theme has a nice tune, but to me, it almost sounds wrong out of the context of casual exploration.
I will give that I haven’t played the game, but based on my past experiences with this type of game in KH in past, I would be going in with expectations of something much greater than what they’ve done in the past.
2. Most of the content in the game is already in other games.
A friend said to be that it was nice that there would be a theater section where you can review all of the cutscenes from all of the games. Okay, maybe that’s cool, but every Final Mix game now has a theater where you can do the same exact thing. Plus, many of these ‘scenes’ don’t include all of the scenes in the games. The main complain about the 358/2 Days cinematic is that it didn’t include many small but important events. Sure, it’s a good review, but unless this is your first Kingdom Hearts game, you both already own and have the theater.
On top of this, there are cutscenes that play in the background while you play the game. All of these cutscenes are likely going to be snippets of previous games which means, all they have to do is render the scene, plug it into Melody of Memory for a given song, and put an overlay for the actual gameplay over it.
The only content actually being created is animation for the new chapter of story, the tracks for the game (as in, placing the notes for the mechanic), key art, and a new UI.
While this game may also have new versions of the music we know and love, 90% of these tracks have already been made and recorded for previous games. Once again, this is a case of them just plugging it into the game.
3. Console only.
I love playing on my PS4. I love it so much more than playing it on my ipad or my phone because it’s a bigger screen and generally better quality. However, every rhythm/beat game I’ve played is on mobile besides Rock Band. I personally find beat games better with a touch screen instead hoping that your input delay isn’t so bad where it ruins the entire game.
I could possibly get behind a beat console game, but I worry about what the control scheme is going to look like and that it will feel unnatural. This is another thing that could seem bad in theory but okay in practice, and I’ll give that I haven’t play it, but I still have my doubts.
4. Minimal story.
As far as we know, this is only a chapter of the story. This is going to be a very non-traditional Kingdom Hearts game where they expect every previous fan to play because... story.
We’ve been told in the past that Kingdom Hearts Union Cross won’t be that big of an impact on the story, and yet look at the end cutscene of KH3. Without seeing Back Cover or playing a Pay To Win mobile game, you would have pretty much no idea what’s going on. This brings me to my final main point.
5. $60. A full price console game.
We are paying for content we have already seen and heard, but they feel it is okay to give us full price because it’s being presented in a fun, new way. Which it isn’t even a new way because we’ve had previous rhythm games before! It’s just a different style now.
This especially peeves me because we paid $30 for ReMind for content that should have been in the final game, and ReMind itself was also a rework of scenes that we already in the game, just from a slightly different perspective.
And another thing...
I am very disappointed with the creative story decisions that have been made thus far in the series. Sure, Sora’s “disappearance” has brought about an interesting arc, but Kairi’s sacrifice was ultimately meaningless with Sora eventually sacrificing himself for Kairi. She was portrayed at the damsel in order to give Sora his arc, not necessarily showing how strong Kairi has become through all of her training.
I’d also like to note that Riku is Sora’s other best friend is getting brushed off to the side in order to build a relationship for Sora and Kairi. Luckily, we’ll get to see a bit of Kairi and Riku interacting which has been desperately needed, because it’s been seeming like they’ve been fighting for screen time with Sora instead of with each other or all together.
tl;dr
The game costs far too much for mostly content we’ve already seen and I feel so robbed of my money that I don’t want to pay to see one chapter of story that I can see just as easily on youtube.

Mother Mercury, Part 1
Summary: Ben meets a mysterious young wardrobe assistant with a startling resemblance to Freddie Mercury on the set of Bohemian Rhapsody. Is it just a coincidence, or could Freddie’s legacy have included a very large secret?
Author’s note: Surprise! This is the first part of the Ben x OC story I’ve been working on for a little while. I was planning to only make it a oneshot, but the plot’s a bit too complicated. This was born from an idea I had while home alone one day that sparked several hours of furious typing (I tend to follow the muse when it strikes, if I have time of course). It’s taken me a while to get this together because I changed my mind about some major aspects of the plot after I’d already started writing, which meant a lot of reworking of what was already there. I have parts of the rest of the story written, but it’s really just snippets at the moment, so I’m not sure when the next part will be up. I’d like to get it done while I’m on uni break this week, but I’ve got a lot of other stuff to do as well so I can’t make any promises. FYI, at this point I’m planning 3 to 4 parts, but that might change as I write more of it.
It’s not actually explained in this part, but this whole story basically hinges on Freddie Mercury having accidentally gotten a woman pregnant during a drug-fuelled party back in the late 70s. If you’re not comfortable with that idea, that’s fine, but stop reading now. I don’t want to give too much away here because things will be explained more in the next part (though it won’t be explicit), but rest assured Freddie in this story is still “gay as a daffodil.” For the record, I personally believe Freddie may have been biromantic, but in this story he’s essentially ‘gay but also things happened while I was high,’ and those things resulted in a lovechild. Remember this is fiction, and sometimes certain things just need to happen for the overall plot to work.
Warnings: Writing about real people, allusions to teen pregnancy, sudden POV switch near the end

Ben ran over and launched himself at the dark-haired, denim-clad figure from behind. “You absolute bastard! Why did you-". The petite figure jumped and turned around. “What the- oh hi Ben.” The girl’s yell trailed off when she realised who had just jumped on her. Ben was stunned. “Oh my God, I am so sorry" he babbled, "I thought you were Rami in costume.” “It’s ok” she reassured him. “I think I should have worn a different jacket, I’ve been getting that all day.” “Well you do look a lot like him from behind” Ben commented. “But not from the front?” the girl questioned, smiling slightly. Ben shook his head. “No, from the front you look like… Freddie.” The girl raised an eyebrow. “That surprises you?” “No, it’s just… you look so much like Freddie you could practically be a makeup reference" Ben explained. "It’s… a little weird, to be perfectly honest.” There was an awkward pause. “So what do you do here? You working?” Ben asked finally. “Wardrobe assistant" she told him. "Not bad for my first proper job.” Ben smiled. “Not bad at all” he agreed.
A sudden thought occurred to him. "Wait, how do you know my name? We've never met before." The girl smiled. "You're one of the stars. Everyone here knows who you are." Ben looked sheepish. "I'm not used to being a star" he muttered. "Hey, why haven't I seen you around yet?" "I'm low down the chain" the girl explained. "I've mostly been dressing extras and keeping stuff in order, they don't let the underlings near the big names." "I'm not…" Ben protested feebly. He really didn't feel like a big star, not yet anyway. The girl smiled again. "You are here." Ben just shook his head. "Speaking of names" he said smoothly, "I haven't caught yours yet." "Mel" she replied. Ben smiled. "Lovely."
Mel saw a lot of Ben after that, not always intentionally. The very next day they ran into each other at the catering tent during the lunch break. Ben grinned when he spotted her dark hair weaving through the tables. "Freddie clone! Good to see you again." Mel smiled back. "You too." She filled her plate and went to leave, but Ben stopped her. "You meeting anyone?" Mel was confused. "No?" "Come and eat with us then" he offered. Mel considered it. Spending time with a blonde hunk was tempting of course, but then again they were supposed to be working together. No one had specifically told her not to socialise with the actors while on set, but she got the impression it wasn't really encouraged. Then again, what harm would one lunch do? She smiled. "Alright then." Ben beamed at her agreement. "Follow me."
He led her over to a table already occupied by two blokes apparently deep in conversation. One was tall and lanky, his face obscured by an enormous curly wig. That must be Gwilym, Mel thought, with his Brian May hair on. The other was smaller and paler, his head also covered by a long auburn wig. Joe, Mel realised, dressed as a pre-perm John Deacon. "I still think my hair is worse" Joe pouted. "You don't suffocate under it every day" Gwilym replied. "You didn't have to get a perm though" Joe pointed out.  "Alright, you win" Gwilym laughed. Ben cleared his throat. "Gentlemen." "Benny boy" Joe responded. Ben groaned. "That's Joe" he told Mel, indicating the redhead. "The tall one's Gwilym. This is Mel" he introduced. "From wardrobe." "Pleasure" Gwilym replied instantly, as Ben and Mel sat down.
Joe eyed Mel up from the seat opposite her. "Say, Mel, how d'you feel about perms?" Gwilym sighed. "Joe, don't." "Why not?" Joe protested. Gwilym turned to face Mel. "Sorry to be nosy, but how old are you, love?" "21" Mel told him. Gwilym shifted back to look at Joe, whose face had suddenly blanched. "That's why not. Couldn't you tell she was too young for you?" Joe shrugged. "It's hard sometimes. Sorry Mel" he added sheepishly. She smiled. "It's alright, I would have turned you down anyway." "Why?" Joe whined, pretending to be upset. Mel grinned mischievously. "You're nearly the same age as my mum." Joe looked bewildered. "How is that even possible… unless-oh." Joe's eyes widened and he fell silent as the realisation hit.
"Where's Rami?" Ben asked, diving in to change the subject before the awkwardness consumed them all. "With Lucy" Joe told him, giggling. Mel was confused. "Wait, so are they a thing now?" Gwilym grinned mischievously. "They refuse to admit it, but yes." "Naww, that's cute" Mel cooed. Ben snorted. "It'd be cuter if they'd stop bloody hiding, it's not like everyone else can't tell they're mad for each other.” Rami and Lucy were clearly very preoccupied because neither of them appeared for the rest of the half hour Mel was allotted for her lunch break. By the end of it she wasn’t entirely sure she wanted to go, and her dining companions definitely didn’t want to see her leave.
Ben was unusually quiet as he watched her wend her way back across the set to the wardrobe truck. This did not escape his friends’ notice. “Earth to Ben? You still with us, mate?” Ben jumped slightly as Gwilym’s voice finally dragged his attention back to his castmates. “Yeah, sorry. What were you saying?” “About Mel” Joe explained, grinning slightly at his friend’s obvious distraction. “Right, yeah” Ben muttered. “Don’t you think she looks like Freddie?” he added, slightly breathless. Joe and Gwilym glanced at each other. “Yes,” the Welshman replied exasperatedly, “that’s what we’ve been discussing since we left.” “Sorry” Ben mumbled sheepishly. “You agree though?” “Yep” Joe nodded. “It’s kinda scary almost.” “We were wondering how that might have happened,” Gwilym explained, “but it’s probably just a coincidence.” “Probably” Ben agreed.
Suddenly Joe grinned deviously. “But that’s not as important as the fact that Ben is clearly into her.” “I am not!” Ben protested, but it was no use. “Oh, you are, you hardly looked anywhere else while she was here" Gwilym countered, grinning mischievously. "And you've been staring at her arse since she left the table.” Ben immediately blushed. "I was not" he grumbled. "He's blushing! Benny's got a cru-ush" Joe teased in a sing-song voice. Ben rolled his eyes. "Hypocrite. You cracked onto her the minute she sat down." Joe looked mildly wounded, but merely shrugged in response. "Well she is pretty, y'know." "Yeah, Ben knows" Gwilym quipped. Ben just groaned in frustration. But he couldn't help thinking Joe wasn't wrong. Not at all.
Lunch with Mel became a regular feature of Ben's day over the next few weeks. Their schedules didn't always match, but they managed to spend that break time together significantly more often than not. Ben was generally accompanied by the rest of "the band," as they called themselves, and sometimes Allen, but Rami and Lucy were usually absent owing to different schedules. Or so they claimed, anyway. Lucy appeared at the band's lunch table for the first time about a week after Mel's first lunch with them, and she took to Mel immediately. "It's so nice to have another woman to balance out this lot" she confided. But Rami didn't join them for over a fortnight, and his reaction was something Mel wouldn't forget in a hurry.
Rami's jaw dropped when he saw the dark-haired girl sat next to Ben. "Uhh… who is this?" Joe smirked. "Nice of you to finally join us for once." Rami rolled his eyes. "I've been busy, ok?" "Sure…" Joe teased. Ben cleared his throat. "Rami, this is Mel, from wardrobe. Mel this is-" She cut him off with a nudge of his shoulder. "I know who he is Ben, I do work here y'know." "Nice to meet you" Rami cut in. "By the way, has anyone ever told you look like Freddie Mercury?" Mel barely resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "A lot of people on this set have" she replied, trying not to sound too annoyed. "If you don't mind me asking, how do you do it?" Rami asked excitedly. Mel shrugged. "I don't really do anything. I suppose I'm just lucky." Rami chuckled quietly. "Very."
Suddenly Mel stood up from the table. "This has been lovely as always, but I need to get back to work" she declared. "Rami it was lovely finally meeting you. I'll see you all tomorrow, gents." She left the table to a chorus of 'see you later's. As soon as she was out of earshot Rami turned to the others. "Is she… she must be related to Freddie, right?" he asked eagerly. "We don't know" Joe sighed. "It might just be a coincidence" Gwilym pointed out. Rami snorted. "No way. She's the spitting image, and she sounds like him? She has to be related, the question is how." Ben looked at Rami curiously. "Does she really sound like Freddie?" he asked wonderingly. "I hadn't noticed." Rami stared incredulously at the blond. "Are you deaf or something?" "No, he's just distracted cause he thinks she's hot" Joe quipped. Rami suddenly grinned mischievously. "Oh, so that's the girl he's crazy about" he teased. Ben groaned. "Aww, not you too."
Rami's comment caused the others to tease Ben good-naturedly for the rest of the break, but his own mind was elsewhere. Mel's resemblance to Freddie was too strong to be a mere coincidence, he thought. It had to come from shared DNA. But most likely she was a distant cousin or something. She was much too young to have been his actual child, Freddie died before she was even thought of. Besides, even when he was alive Freddie never had kids, right?
Rami initially dismissed the whole idea out of hand, but something about it nagged at him for the rest of the day. He was sure he'd read something that referred to Freddie and kids during his preparation for Bohemian Rhapsody, but he couldn't remember what or where he'd found it. It wasn't until he finally got back to the pile of research in his hotel room that night that he managed to dig up an answer.
A couple of articles published in the first months after Freddie died both said similar things. 'There are whispers Freddie even fathered a lovechild around the time Queen hit the peak of their fame, at the turn of the 80s, but this has never been proven.' 'Some rumours go as far as to suggest Freddie had a secret lovechild hidden away, the result of a drug-fuelled encounter during his partying years, but those now appear to be almost entirely unfounded.' Clearly no one really thought the rumours were anything more than old gossip back then. But what if they were actually true? That would mean… it would mean Freddie had a child, somewhere out in the world. Except Mel couldn't be that child, Rami thought, she was too young. But if Freddie's child was born in the late 70s, like the rumours said, they would have been old enough to have their own child by the time Mel was born 21 years ago. Rami gasped as a sudden realisation hit. If the rumours were true, and he was right about Mel being related to Freddie, that could mean Freddie Mercury's grandchild was working on the set of Bohemian Rhapsody.

THIS IS SOUND OF ORIGIN
~By Shawn Gibson~
Tumblr media
When last we encountered SOUND OF ORIGIN, the smoked-up and tuned-down quartet from Huddersfield were featured in the landmark compilation, 'Doomed & Stoned in England' (2019), where we dipped our feet "Into The Vile." Since then, Sound of Origin have gifted us with an entire album's worth of material and we've had a blast immersing ourselves in their groovy soundscape of swirling riffs, vicious beats, gritty singing, and some terrific vocal harmonies. Our resident sludgehead Shawn Gibsonheavy set out to get to know these guys better, speaking to drummer Chris 'Foz' Foster following their latest APF Records release, 'The All Seeing Eye' (2020).   [Billy Goate]
Chris, how the hell are you? Thank you for your time!
Hey, Shawn. All good and absolutely no bother at all, thank you for reaching out and doing the interview. It’s very much appreciated.
Who are the members of Sound Of Origin and what do they do in the band?
There are four of us in the band. Joel (Bulsara) who is our vocalist/ frontman. Joe (Wilczynski) on guitar/backing vocals. Jax (Townend) on bass and myself, Chris (Foster) on drums.
Where is Sound Of Origin from?
We are based out of and rehearse in Huddersfield, UK. I live in a place called Sowerby just outside of Halifax and Joel lives in Leeds, so we both travel across to join up with the other two guys.
What bands do you love from your area?
Wow. That’s a tough one as there are so many. The UK Underground scene is awash with fantastic bands, and many come from around our local area. If we are talking around our immediate area, then there are the likes of Ironrat, Gandalf the Green, and our bros in Son of Boar that immediately spring to mind. But if you look within an hour's drive from where we are, you have the likes of Barbarian Hermit, Spaztik Munkey, Archelon, Boss Keloid, Ten Foot Wizard, Blind Monarch, Hundred Year Old Man, and so many more. All killer bands doing different kinds of heavy.
This is the reply to all who wrote us off: Not Dead Yet.
What venues or bars do you go to see heavy music?
There are a good number within a short travelling distance to us. The Parish in Huddersfield is our local venue. However, our good friends in Iron Boar bookings put killer lineups on in Bradford at venues such as The Underground and Al’s Juke bar. Manchester-wise, Chunk from Stonebaked promotions usually uses The Bread Shed and there is also The Alma in Bolton that puts on some cracking gigs, too.
Which bands got you turned on to doom, psych, and stoner?
From a very young age it’s got to be Black Sabbath, for sure. I can still remember how I felt when I heard them for the very first time as a five-year old, It’s stayed with me all my life. But bands like Type O Negative, Acrimony, Cathedral, Candlemass, Trouble, Weedeater, Paradise Lost, Eyehategod, Reverend Bizarre, Saint Vitus, Monster Magnet, Electric Wizard, My Dying Bride & Anathema have all hit the spot at some point over the years.
The All Seeing Eye by Sound of Origin
Who did the artwork for your new album 'The All Seeing Eye' (2020)?
A friend of Joel’s called Sam McDougall. Such a talented guy and really easy to work with. Our mates over in 4Q Media delivered the overall design for the CD package and it has worked out really well.
I love the slow part of "Warfarin" at about 5:35 minutes in. Slow and on the moon! There's even a part that incites moshing!
The end of "Warfarin" finishes off low & slow for sure. (laughs) We wanted to ensure the first song from our original EP ended with a big riff. As for the faster part, all of us in the band like some faster bands (Joe used to play in a thrash band many moons ago) and we felt like it was a natural fit in the song when we were first putting it together.
Seeds of the Past by Sound of Origin
On your first album, "Seeds Of The Past," "Warfarin," and "Asphalt" are my favorites. Tell me a little about these songs.
"Asphalt" is my personal favourite from the first EP. The way it keeps coming back around, but builds and builds each time and John’s vocal delivery (old singer) did it real justice. It was always great to play both in the studio (volume turned up to 11) and live as we used to get a great reaction from the crowd on that one. The end riff on "Warfarin," where we slowed things down, always was fun to do as we rehearsed it in the studio 'till we got it down to a virtual crawl.
My favorite off your new album, 'The All Seeing Eye' (2020), is "Not Dead Yet." That is how you start an album, goddamnit! Face melted!
It’s a big sound, for sure, when it kicks in. When our old singer left the band, we went through some pretty dark times, and we were written off by many people -- some going as far as to say we were dead as a band and we should just knock it on the head. Enter new vocalist Joel and everything changed for the better. The fact is, as a band, we have never been more alive and well. This is the reply to all who wrote us off. Not dead yet.
At times, it’s been like a budget version of Spinal Tap.
What are some things that inspired your album 'Seeds Of The Past' (2017)?
Joe had been trying to get a solid stoner-doom band together for about 10 years or so. It took a very long time to get a workable, regular platform to flourish, as life generally got in the way of establishing a fully integrated band. Seeds Of The Past is a reflection of some of the music Joe wrote years prior. That said, the title track "Seeds" we came up with in the studio jamming and it just took off from there.
What are some things that inspired the music on 'The All Seeing Eye' (2020)?
The main contributing factors that inspired the music on The All Seeing Eye were more circumstantial than anything. We hunkered down in the studio and started writing material for a new album whilst we were in the process of finding a new front man. With this in mind, we set out on patching the initial framework of songs together and took things from there. It wasn’t until the addition of Joel that we really started to get to grips with the music and what we could achieve with the overall sound on the album.
Tumblr media
What has been an awkward moment as a band?
Ha, where should I start? At times, it’s been like a budget version of Spinal Tap. Band-wise, I would say the most awkward time for us all would be the gap between singers. Having an idea of what you want to do moving forward and not being able to do it became frustrating at times. When Joel arrived, it was like a huge breath of fresh air swept through us all. Things came together really quickly and the growing pains we had when we first started out have all but disappeared now.
On 'Seeds Of The Past' (2017) there is a song "Left For Dead." 'The All Seeing Eye' (2020) has a song "Not Dead Yet." Your sophomore album is alive and kicking!
Absolutely. There was a completely fresh take and approach on this album. The arrival of Joel in the band led to a clean sweep of what we had done before. The lads (Joe & Jax) invested completely in new amps and cabs and guitars, and a change of approach came with dropping our tuning further. Whilst a number of the songs from the album had already been written, because of Joel’s vocal range we had another look at them between the four of us and reworked a few things here and there. The four of us now are in a much better place than at any time previously with the band.
Tumblr media
"Dim Carcosa" and "Morning Bird" are rippers off 'The All Seeing Eye' (2020)! Talk to me about what's behind these songs.
"Dim Carcosa" references Robert W. Chambers and his fantastic work in The King in Yellow. Dim Carcosa is where horror truly resides and it delves into madness in various forms. This song describes the practical inevitability of mental health issues in today’s society.
"Morning Bird" came about when Jax started playing a bassline in the studio and sparked a song out of the group. Following the general themes of perseverance and will power, this song discusses the ups and downs of self-worth and the way the political landscape recently has given a lot of people the excuse to judge, be racist, and to discriminate on all fronts. As human beings, we are very tribal and like to separate. We don’t realise that we are, in fact, one tribe.
What makes Sounds of Origin laugh?
Each other. There is a two-decade age gap in the band and we are four very different people, but when we get together the laughs are constant. There is a real feel-good vibe in the band now more than ever, which has led to an intense period of songwriting and ideas. Even through this period of uncertainty with the COVID situation. Everyone is contributing now and the songs and ideas are coming together for the next album already.
Chris, it's been a pleasure! Thank you again for your time talking about your new album 'The All Seeing Eye' (2020)! I hope you and your mates in Sound Of Origin are well.
No problems at all. Again thank you guys for the support. Big shout out to APF Records for signing us and giving us a platform to push our music on. Best wishes to you all and we hope you stay safe and well in these strange times.
