I feel like Aimilios would also have his own little ‘resentment period’ towards Dusknoir when he returns years later. But not in the same way Ribbon’s secretly berates and spits venom when Celebi/Grovyle have their backs turned.
Aimilios’s aura sensing was the biggest double-edged sword for the riolu. Not only because of how he was able to tell when Dusknoir was lying, and turning a blind eye, but also how the aura pup was able to tell when he was being genuine. When he was enjoying his time in the present with them, even as ‘The Great Dusknoir’. When he consistently fretted over him and Ribbons. When he laughed with them while ordering drinks from Spinda’s. When he held back during training sessions—
When he held back during their fight at the temple.
Aimilios… knew for the longest time. That Dusknoir was pulling his punches, but never spoke a word of it to Ribbons. This only led to the fighting-type dealing with the haunting realization that the Gripper Pokémon could have done away with them so easily. Every time they were alone. When he trained them. When Aimilios felt vulnerable enough to sleep near him.
He could’ve killed them at any given moment.
So when he suggests that they talk alone on the beach. (The very same one he gave the Riolu false hope to of being ‘friends’, lying to his face.) Aimilios brokenly asks in the most hushed tone of voice why he stayed close. Even as Aimilios’s instincts, tell him, urge him, to run from Dusknoir. He silences the desperate pleas from his jittery body. Forcing himself to stay long enough to get the answer he wants— needs.
The answer to why. Why Dusknoir could have easily avoided them once he knew who Ribbons was. Or why he even indulged in them. Why he protected them as vigilantly as he did, if they were only a means to an end. Why he looked astonished whenever the small fighting-type showcased his sharp wit towards the elder ghost. Why he told Aimilios how proud he was whenever he landed a hit during their training. Why Dusknoir looked genuinely upset whenever he patched up his wounds.
Why Dusknoir listened to all of his small retellings of his journey with Ribbons with endearment. Why Dusknoir held him closer when he accidentally fell asleep on the gargantuan wraith. Why he held his paw whenever they traversed Treasure town together. Why Aimilios felt like his life was over staring down the Wood Gecko with his blood stained claws— before Dusknoir saved him. Why the wraith was the one who even bothered healing him, when the fatal wounds from Grovyle could have just—
Just. why why why— it would’ve made hating him so much easier if he didn’t do all of that. Aimilios would be just as resentful as Ribbons— but he isn’t. Because the smallest, desperatest part of him still missed Dusknoir. (And an even smaller part hoped he felt the same.)
So, he begs Dusknoir, to be honest with him. For once in his life.
And when he fails to respond in time (due to Aimilios sounding like he’s on the verge of tears. Unable to find the right words to not break the dam—)
“Aimilios, I—“
“You should’ve let Grovyle finish me off in the Azelf’s lake.”
Dusknoir eye only widens. Unable to look in the Riolu’s direction in fear of seeing his torn face. Yet his eye betrays him when it slowly trails towards the Aura Pokémon. Who’s already facing away— black, mittened paws covering the mess of tears spilling from his eyes.
“It—“ The aura pup’s breath hitches “I-It would’ve hurt less than this.”

I’m interested in hearing your thoughts/hcs about the Indigo Tribe if you have any! They’re sorely underdeveloped imo :(
The Indigo Tribe is absolutely fascinating to me, because of the weird moral quandary that it presents, and what its very existence says about its creator, Abin Sur.
Like, I joke about the Indigo Tribe being "the most unethical criminal rehabilitation program in the universe" but if we take Natromo at his word, it's not even that. Supposedly, Abin made the Indigo Tribe as a personal army to take on the Guardians of the Universe, with no real intention of redeeming the villains he was effectively enslaving.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Green Lantern (2011) issue #9
It's a rather dark statement about Abin and the lengths he was willing to go to reach his goals, but also somewhat contradicted by the rest of the narration. Because according to Natromo, the Indigo Tribe was also a test run for the Guardians themselves, and Abin's plan was to try and change them. Which frankly seems like more trouble than just getting rid of them entirely, as Atrocitus or Sinestro would happily espouse.
Mind you, all of this is from the mouth of Natromo. And while we have no reason to doubt his honesty, we also don't know how well he really knew Abin. What we do know however, is that Geoff Johns writes Abin as being generally heroic. Not always in his actions (see how he treats Atrocitus and the other Ysmault demons) but certainly in his motivations (Abin crashes his ship deliberately so it won't land in Coast City and kill a bunch of people).
So it's possible that Abin was only thinking of the bigger picture and focused on using the Indigo Light to fix the Guardians after they go off the rails. But it's also possible that he intended to try and rehabilitate some of the universe's worst villains as well. After all, not everyone who gets an Indigo ring is completely brainwashed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ray Palmer and John Stewart are virtually unaltered from their normal personalities while Indigo Lanterns, and it's noted that both of them are already compassionate individuals. Even those who are more deeply under the ring's control do retain some aspects of their previous selves, as Fatality observes regarding Pink Thanos Munk in Green Lanterns: New Guardians (2011) issue #5.
And of course, the rings do cause permanent change to their wearers after being worn for longer periods, as proven by Indigo-1/Iroque being able to provide the spark of compassion needed to rebuild the Central Power Battery.
Granted, there's not any solid evidence to suggest Abin knew any of this. It is possible that he did, since we don't get to see how much he really studied/experimented with the Indigo rings. Personally, I believe that Natromo understood how the Indigo light functioned on a mechanical level enough to be the architect of the Tribe's rings and lanterns, but Abin was the one who fully understood the power of compassion and how it affects living beings.
Tumblr media
Even if we accept that Abin meant well though, the actual reality of his actions is still very much an moral dilemma. After all, none of the Indigo Tribe's permanent members are there by choice. Every one of them was forcibly conscripted, initially by Abin but later on by the Indigos themselves.
Yet it's also worth noting that the Indigo Tribe is made up of sadistic psychopaths. When their battery goes offline, they all immediately revert to murder mode and try to kill Hal and Sinestro. Natromo straight up calls Iroque "the child-killer." It isn't as though these are random innocents who were kidnapped, every last one of the Indigo Tribe are violent and dangerous to society. Most legal systems would toss them into an Arkham cell next to the Joker and throw away the key, if not outright execute them.
Now, one could argue that being conscripted into the Indigo Tribe is tantamount to a death sentence. The original personality is effectively erased and overwritten by a new self. Granted, they do retain their memories, but who they are is fundamentally changed. But this way lies philosophical paradoxes that I am not prepared to ponder, so let's get back on track.
From a purely utilitarian perspective, the existence of the Indigo Tribe is a net positive. Take the most evil and unrepentant murderers in the universe and pump them full of compassion until they become a force for good. If you believe the ends justify the means, this is a solid alternative to lifetime imprisonment or capital punishment.
But if you believe that people should not be mistreated simply for being found guilty of a crime, then the fate of the Indigos is not quite as easy to accept. Kidnapping, exile, brainwashing- these are things we would consider to be violations of a person's rights, yet they are the modus operandi of the Indigo Tribe.
We joke here on Tumblr about our favorite character being dragged kicking and screaming through a redemption arc but this is what it actually looks like when taken literally. With a side of "I have no mouth yet I must scream" to boot.

I feel like for the first few years of guardianship Darius and Hunter really struggle to figure out how to refer to each other.
Like it's easier for Hunter, he pretty quickly settles on "guardian" for explaining their relationship to other people and just referring to Darius by name when talking to the man himself. Overtime the phrasing gradually warms, becoming "foster parent" and eventually, once Hunter's already an adult old enough to move out, "Dad".
(Sidenote: he doesn't move out til he's in his mid to late twenties, bc he's under no obligation too, Darius low-key doesn't want him too, and the two of them want to make up for lost time in a sense, since Hunter only had 2 years of legal dependency on Darius before aging out of the system. Darius adopts Hunter retroactively as an adult)
Darius on the other hand has a real conundrum on his hands for those first few years. He has a lot of options! But "ward" is too formal and makes it sound like Darius picked him up off the street like after his parents were murdered, "apprentice/student" isn't really accurate considering the focus of Darius and Hunter's relationship has less to do with Hunter learning magic and more to do with Hunter being housed and fed. "Kid" and "foster son" are there...but...
Look, Darius isn't going to refer to Hunter more familiarly than Hunter refers to him! He's not gonna make it WEIRD. He's not a dad, because Hunter doesn't want/need him to be (and also parenthood is scary <3). Darius doesn't know the first thing about being a dad, despite how his friend group teases him.
Eda and Eberwolf are the two who are worst about it. They torture him with how 'fatherly' he's allegedly being (allegations Darius will DENY til his GRAVE!!!) And Eda specifically compares his journey to hers, saying it always starts off with you referring to them as your apprentice (again, Darius doesn't plan on doing that), as your roommate (...kinda weird in Darius' opinion? But okay Eda), or even your pet (????HELLO???). But eventually, they always become your dumb kid when you least expect it.
She's had a couple cups of appleblood by this point, but Darius knows on some level she's right and he's steadfastly ignoring that fact, even as Eber continues to refer to Hunter as his "cub" (kinda cute but Darius doesn't know how Hunter would feel being compared to an animal). The only people who are even remotely reasonable about all this (besides Lilith who's a bit disinterested in kid talk) is Raine and Alador, who both sort of neutrally, a bit awkwardly refer to Hunter as Darius' Boy.
Darius referring to Hunter as "my boy" is funnily enough what sticks the longest before it evolves to son boy. Hunter's crushing it at a derby match? Darius is whooping and cheering, yelling "THAT'S MY BOY!!!" At the other parents in the stands. Hunter is doing something dangerous or inadvisable where others can see him? "Darius, your boy-" "AHH! MY BOY". Hunter, a year into his stay with Darius finally comes clean about everything to do with him being a grimwalker, and is afraid that he's going to go back to seeing him as just an inferior replacement for Darius' beloved mentor? Darius (who has just had to process some of the most bonkers, emotionally heavy information in his life) gently, hesitantly puts a hand on his shoulder (the 'good' one Hunter doesn't mind people touching), and says that Hunter's much more than that. He's Darius' Boy and he's not going to kick him out or get angry or love him any less for things out of his control. It's good. They're good.
Like I said, it evolves over time and 'boy' becomes somewhat obsolete as the two get caught up in the joy of finally feeling able to explicitly refer to each other as family. But unlike "guardian" or "ward" the word never gets fully retired. Even when Hunter is 30 and is arguing that he's more of a man than a boy now, he is still getting referred to by Darius as "his boy", the way some parents never really stop calling their adult kids baby or kiddo (Camila and Eda respectively btw).
Hunter makes one of those corny matching shirt sets at some point for a father's Day gift when he's 17/18, where the two shirts say "if lost, return Boy to me" (Darius) and "I'm Boy" (Hunter). Hunter mostly did it so he could own a funny shirt that says "I'm boy". Darius openly weeps upon seeing them. Like Oh my Titan he's boy. He's my boy. Oh wow
#ramblings of a lunatic#the owl house#toh#hunter toh#darius deamonne#dadrius#made this instead of finishing my dadrius week day 1 comic. it's okay i have time#i think this post dips it's toes into being one of those 'part writing drabble/part textpost analysis' posts#which I'm okay w/ tbh i love those#i just hope it reads well#the important thing about dadrius + eberwolf to me is that it's just as unlikely a trio as King Eda and Luz are#just as weird and has just as gradual and retrospectively funny a journey as them#i also specified foster parent instead of adoptive parent just bc i read it in a fic once where Hunter was placed in isles foster care-#-post canon and he had a social worker who was a gargoyle named Chantelle. it was delightful#this is my homage to that. the fic was 'the titan laughs in flowers' i think (thank you user yardsards for the rec)#alador still gets the instinct to refer to Hunter as the golden guard and amity gets on his case about it#so referring to Hunter as darius' boy grew out of that and spread to raine who finds it kind of adorable#darius refers to hunter as his foster son for the first time when his (darius' i mean) family comes to visit#not as like a statement of anything they don't deny Hunter as a deamonne. they love him like they love a scraggly cat#but just like. it felt right for Darius in the moment and Hunter got emotional about it#anyway happy early dadrius week I'm rotating them in my mind I'm biting down on them like a chew toy etc etc

Tissue sample from my procedure results came back! I have no cancer, but I DO have complex hyperplasia with atypia and Google is telling me that it's considered "pre-cancerous" (still a giant L!!!) and the only treatments are hormonal birth control to reverse it or Taking It All Out. Guess which one I will be fighting for...
