2024 MAY 10 Friday
"Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy. [...] You are now in anguish but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you."
~ John 16:20,22

The 99 (plus 1)
On September 9th, President Russell M. Nelson, prophet and leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will turn 100 years old. His has been a full life, dedicated to service and a desire to improve the lives of others.
As part of that ministry, the prophet has invited us to help celebrate his birthday by reaching "out to 'the one' in need", "'the one' in our lives who may be feeling lost or alone". This invitation references the parable of the lost sheep (Matthew 18 and Luke 15), which emphasizes the value of one that is lost.
This is interesting to me as a transgender disciple of Christ. Transgender individuals generally make up no more than 1% of the overall population, making us (in some very real ways) 'the one'. If a typical ward has 100-200 active members, then there should be approximately 1 transgender individual in every congregation of the church. It is sad there are far, far fewer than that. Most leave. They feel alone, lost, isolated and discriminated against despite the council President Nelson has given.
There will be a special broadcast commemorating the prophet's 100th birthday. During the broadcast, "Examples of what people around the world have done over the past 100 days to commemorate his birthday will be shared through stories from people who were 'the one.'"
Throughout his ministry, I see the Savior ministering to those who felt lost or alone, forgotten or marginalized. I imagine that the broadcast will show outreach efforts that look familiar to us. When I think about the people the Savior ministered to, I often think on those who were rejected or discriminated against by the society around him, including:
Those who may have been considered enemies, like the Samaritans - including the good Samaritan of the parable or the woman at the well,
Those who may have been considered outsiders, like the centurion's servant - or tax collectors and sinners like Levi and others,
Those who may have been considered unclean, like lepers (at least one of whom was another Samaritan) and the woman with the issue of blood,
Those who may have been considered sinners, like the woman taken in adultery or the woman who washed his feet, and others.
We also read of several times where Jesus' followers didn't want him to interact or minister with a certain class of people, from the blind man who called after him "Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me" to the little children he instructed should be suffered to come unto him.
I am grateful for the church's emphasis on (and exercise of) ministry and outreach, and for the good that it will bring to the world. I am grateful for those who try to make the world a better place, as President Nelson has. I hope someday we will see inclusion of LGBT people in our outreach narratives, including stories of truly sensitive, kind, compassionate and Christlike ministry - even when some in our society may consider us to be enemies, outsiders, unclean and sinners.
Love, Erran

BVB Discography // The Mourning The Mourning is the band's third EP. Released on October 21st, 2022, starting with the single “Saviour II”, a reaffirming of the message from “Saviour”, featured on Set The World On Fire. The EP, according to frontman Andy Biersack, originally began with the intention of writing The Phantom Tomorrow part two, but Biersack believed the entire story had already been told on the album and instead switched to writing songs about the band’s own experiences.

i don't think the eggs are crying just for bad. i think they're crying seeing yet another pass over into their realm. i think they're crying because its a reminder that even the most immortal of creatures can die. i think they're crying because they know their siblings, particularly dapper and his monthly visits, have received another loss. i think they're crying because their parents have all outlived their children, a blessing in their eyes, while bad has not.

That is why the LORD says, “Turn to me now, while there is time.  Give me your hearts.  Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning.  Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.”  Return to the LORD your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.  He is eager to relent and not punish.

WiP Wednesday
I got tagged by @rewritetheending @buckactuallys @renecdote and @spotsandsocks 😘😘😘 have some more sentences of the best friend's wedding AU - Karen for the win 🙌
He staggers to the door, opens it and blinks. Rapidly.
It's 10 am and Karen's standing in front of him, a grand total of four bottles of wine dangling from her hands.
Eddie's about to say something but the words die on his tongue and in the end all of the air in his lungs just pours out in a big exhale. He feels like a fucking deflated balloon.
Karen tilts her head, presses her lips together in a sympathetic pout and extends her arms. The wine bottles clink together.
"On a scale from 1 to 10, how badly do you need a drink?"
"I-I can't," Eddie groans and rakes his hand through his hair, "I gotta pick Chris up in five hours and—"
Karen cuts him off, "I already cleared it with Hen, she can pick him up and he can spend the day with her and Denny, including a sleepover, so—if you want to—I'm officially giving you permission to get irresponsibly wine-drunk with me today."
"Okay," he sighs and then says, "Eleven."
"Huh?"
"On a scale of 1 to 10, it's definitely eleven."
I'm gonna tag @mellaithwen @princessfbi @capseycartwright @nymika-arts @fcntasmas @gayhoediaz and @homerforsure if you want to and haven't already! 😘😘😘

9 Menachem Av 5784 (12-13 August 2024)
Tisha b’Av is the deepest day of communal mourning in the Jewish year. Like Yom Kippur, it is observed by many Jews with a 25 hour fast. However, rather than personal penitence, the purpose of this fast is primarily collective remembrance. In the Babylonian exile, Jewish communal leaders were deeply aware of the danger of their children and grandchildren forgetting a land that they’d never seen and assimilating fully into the culture of the empire that had uprooted them. Establishing the Ninth of Av as a fast day was a way to remind generations of exiles that no matter how prosperous or settled they were, something crucial was missing.
The Talmud says that five catastrophes befell the Jewish people on the ninth of Av. The first was HaShem’s decree that the generation of adults who had left Egypt and mutinied in the wilderness would not enter the promised land. The second was the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash by the Babylonian army. The third was the destruction of the restored Mikdash by the Romans. The fourth was the capture of Beitar and with it the final end of the Bar Kokhba Revolt in the days of Rabbi Akiva. And the fifth was the Romans completely destroying Jerusalem after that revolt, and forbidding Jews from settling there. In the generations since the redaction of the Gemara several antisemitic governments have deliberately chosen the ninth of Av as the date for expulsions of Jews or attacks on the Jewish people, studying our traditions just enough to use them to increase our pain.
On Pesach we become one with our enslaved forebearers as they enter into freedom for the first time, and we rejoice in our liberation. On the ninth of Av we unify ourselves with our ancestors as they enter captivity again. We remind ourselves that grief and sorrow are as much a part of life as joy and celebration. Mourning is not shameful, not something we must hide or shrink away from. Our griefs, collective and personal, are something we have every right to and which we can enter together. We must allow ourselves our grief in order to have hope of being comforted.
