The lavender handkerchief
by barisan (@barisan-no)
Not rated, 1k, LQR & WWX
Part of WWX and LQR Friendship Week
Summary: Wei Wuxian’s time on the streets left a deeper wound on his mind. Lan Qiren finds him having a panic attack after being triggered during his punishment. Kay's comments: A short look into a different universe where life on the streets left a more noticeable mark on Wei Wuxian and Lan Qiren is a little kinder. Really loved it. Sometimes, I can't help but crave good guy Lan Qiren stories. Excerpt: “Wei Wuxia-!” He stops himself as he takes in the scene. Wei Wuxian is on his knees, supporting himself on the door frame as he heaves raucously. Lan Qiren couldn’t make himself move, petrified by the possibility of soiling his robes. For a moment, he feels sorry for the boy. “Wei Wuxian,” he begins to scold. “I cannot believe this. Have the Jiang coddled you so much you cannot even tend to spoiled scraps?” He turns at Lan Qiren’s voice, revealing a tear streaked face, a ruined handkerchief held to his nose.
pov lan qiren, pov wei wuxian, canon divergence, lan qiren, cloud recesses study arc, post-traumatic stress disorder, ptsd, wei wuxian has ptsd, disordered eating, hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort, hopeful ending, good person lan qiren

crazy how people will watch the scene where wei wuxian is trapped in the dungeon with the giant dog and see how absolutely rattled and horrified he becomes, devoid of all of this usual arrogance and confidence and cocky disposition, in what is so very clearly a trauma response, and then make fun of him for being scared of dogs and treat it like it's a goof. kill yourself

Bitemarks
I swear I set out to write a romantic, smutty ficlet - and then something terrible happened.
This is written for point 27 of @sasukimimochi's fall drawing/writing challenge that you can find here.
Warnings: explicit content, mental distress, ptsd symptoms, trauma
Enjoy <3
Wei Wuxian keens, arching into his husband's touch as pleasure burns endless waves from where they're connected. With half lidded, glassy eyes, he seeks the other's expression and moans helplessly at the gaze that meets his, hot with desire and affection all the same.
He opens his mouth to say something about it, about how good he feels and how unfair it is that Lan Wangji is just so skilled at everything, including sex - but his mouth is taken into an unforgiving, rough kiss, the other's thrusts becoming just as merciless with little warning.
Wei Wuxian can do nothing but moan inside Lan Wangji's mouth, legs tightening around his hips as if to spur him on - and just that happens, so much so that Wei Wuxian has to tear his mouth away from his husband's, to both moan and breathe and beg.
But yet again, Lan Wangji sets out to keep him quiet and bites into the side of his neck, just enough to bring back color into the faded bitemark decorating the base of Wei Wuxian's throat.
He screams - but not in pleasure or delight, like Lan Wangji expected him to, like he usually does. Instead, it sounds like a scream of fear, a sound that's almost haunting in the desperation it holds.
Lan Wangji is quick to stop and look towards Wei Wuxian for an explanation - instead, he is met with wild, tearful eyes, his complexion ghostly white as his body has gone rigid, every muscle tense.
Because Wei Wuxian is no longer in bed, writhing in the throes of passion with his husband, in the warmth and safety of their marital home. He is alone, coreless and injured in the Burial Mounds, desperately trying to fight off the starving ghouls and corpses that claw at his flesh, seeking life and revenge.
He sees the tall, endless peaks of dark resentment cave in on him, splitting open as if unhinging their jaws to swallow him whole and tear him apart until not even a shred of soul is left of him.
He hears the cacophony of voices screaming, crying, laughing, singing in his ears, making fun of his torment, lamenting his fate and their own all at once.
He feels cold, scaly hands grasp at him, formless limbs entangle with his own, the stench of decay fills his nostrils and he's motionless against the claws that reach to tear into his skin, made a voyeur to his own destruction because he can't look away-
And then it all stops.
Wei Wuxian blinks as if awoken from a dream, and finds himself in Lan Wangji's arms, a steady stream of spiritual energy emitting from him as he hums their song lowly.
He looks up at the man, who brings the song to a lull, and runs a gentle hand through Wei Wuxian's hair, visibly relieved. "How do you feel?"
Wei Wuxian tries at a smile but does not succeed. "Better now... I'm...I don't know what that was, I..."
Lan Wangji holds him tightly against his chest and soothes his hands over the other's back as he inevitably begins to sob. There is nothing Lan Wangji can do but be present and loving, kissing at Wei Wuxian's forehead and reassuring him over and over that he is safe, that nothing could ever harm him now, that he is loved.
And ever so slowly, the crying stops.
Lan Wangji does not ask. He knows that there are things he may not understand about Wei Wuxian and experiences the other would rather not speak about.
That is especially the case about his life in the Burial Mounds in the three months he vanished back then.
So when Wei Wuxian finally stops crying, Lan Wangji does not expect him to talk about it.
But he does.
And Lan Wangji thinks he will be forever haunted by what he's heard.

Happy Valentine's Day! May I have a follow up on Lynchpin? Does NHS get his memories back too? Does WWX start having PTSD from the two lifetimes he's now lived? Or anything else you'd like!
Wei Wuxian wishes he could remember his first life better.
So much of it is terrible, but it really does feel like a nightmare. It becomes something faded and distant and like something that never happened even though he knows that every terrible memory is real and true and his.
Jiang Cheng's memories are sharp and clear and seared into his memory, every tragedy clear and right near the surface. Wei Wuxian remembers what happened, and he remembers feeling things, but the actual feeling themselves feel like they're suppressed through glass.
An affect of his golden core being the center of the array and yet it being separate from him, now living inside his brother. He gets enough residual effects to know what happened, but not enough for those memories to feel like his own.
Jiang Cheng doesn't have that luxury, although he insists that time and distance and all of them alive and happy has blunted the worst what he went through.
Wei Wuxian hates letting his brother be alone in anything, even something terrible, but Jiang Cheng just rolls his eyes and tells him that's what got them in trouble in the first place.

Eternal Brotherhood
I took Sunday off because I have SO MUCH homework, but guess what I'm going to do instead?
Yep, you've guessed it 😔
***
LMAO, when are you not 🤣🤣
Tumblr media
He reminds me of Wei Wuxian so much!
***
His sworn brothers roast him so much all the damn time, but they are still willing to stage a whole rebellion for him at the drop of a hat 🤗
Tumblr media
***
I have so much filth on my brain 😫
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She said this and my mind was immediately in the gutter.
***
Is she related to Lord Ge, the general?
Tumblr media
***
LMAO, smart girl!
Tumblr media
***
So many implications in this drama that he stinks 😅
Tumblr media
LMAO, she even disinfected the stick she touched him with 🤣🤣
Tumblr media
***
Yikes 😅😅
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's very hilarious and entertaining but any hotness factor is dead in the water, I'm afraid 🤣🤣
***
LMAO, a comedy 🤣🤣
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously speaking, though, he has PTSD and a whole host of other mental health issues. He is self-medicating.
A lifetime of therapy would not be enough.
***
Finally, he got off his butt and intervened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, in times of war, the worst people float to the surface and are given weapons and positions of power.
***
Shoes on the bed, OMG 😑😑
Tumblr media
***
LMAO, now he's just asking to get decked 😅
Tumblr media
***
LMAO, absolutely begging for it 😂
Tumblr media
***
I'm glad to see he isn't completely stupid and sees right through their little ploy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
***
I mean, I know he has superpowers, is the main character and cannot actually lose this fight, but I'm still going to enjoy watching him get his ass beaten for as long as it lasts 🤣🤣
Tumblr media
***
LMAO, I have bad news for you!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prostitutes have to wash if they are to have any hope of making money.
***
Cackling 🤣🤣
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the only prospective client is Ning and she apparently has no standards when it comes to him, so go ahead and hit his face. She will still want him. Maybe just leave his dick intact. Or if not, just his fingers. Or tongue. IDK.
***
LMAO 🤣🤣
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's such a gremlin, I love him 😂😂
***
LMAO, I love Lord Ge 🤣🤣
Tumblr media
This drama is full of great characters, but he is one of my favourites!

LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 2, Poll 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave and prior here.
Nathaniel Thorn-Sorcery of Thorns
Qualifications:
Canonically bisexual and uses a cane after one of his legs is injured in the end of the first book. Also, either obviously mentally ill or just mentally-ill coded, depending on how you look at it; PTSD mainly but there's kind of more going on there.
Propaganda:
Miserable, funny, flaming bisexual drama queen. I think he thinks he's in some sort of gothic romance novel. Cane user who suggested getting a sword cane but didn't because his girlfriend basically vetoed it. His trauma-induced nightmares have a habit of coming to life in the real world, so he has to take medicine to prevent it. He was raised by an aroace-coded semi-formerly-evil demon/shapeshifting fluffy cat, which is part of why he's a bit weird. Just trust me, he has swag.
Wei Wuxian-The Untamed / Mo Dao Zu Shi
Qualifications:
Goes through a somewhat unethical organ transplant (in that the person he is giving the organ to doesn't realize that's what's going on) where he gives up his "golden core." This is like his center of power and by giving it up, not only is he not able to do most of the more "magic" things he could do before, but he's also noticeably physically weaker and gets injured much more easily (and takes longer to recover) as well as faints more often (iirc he only faints once pre-golden core removal and that was after sustaining major injuries and going on for a significant time without any healing while also fighting and traveling). Like he finds ways around it and invents new methods so that he can still do some things that he did before, just via a very different method. In the show we don't really see any characters who aren't cultivators, or at least part of that world, so Wei Wuxian is like the only character we really get to see without a golden core.
Also gotta say that this boy is severely depressed. Like "I'm-going-to-ask-my-doctor-friend-to-perform-a-mutliple-day-long-surgery-on-myself-in-which-I-will-be-awake-where-she'll-rip-out-the-core-of-my-being-and-transplant-it-into-my-adopted-brother-who-I'll-make-sure-never-finds-out-what-happened-even-though-he'll-come-to-hate-me" depressed. he has no value for his own life other than what he can give to others, even if it's his own body. like I think some fans unfairly classify him as being insane when he's really just depressed as all hell and having the worst possible things happen to him one after another and every time he breaks down it causes more trouble and usually people end up dying because of him.
Propaganda:
https://youtu.be/swbXAVADjxY ^ok this clip kinda explains the whole thing better (and obvs spoilers)
https://youtu.be/2wO5nsnkSBk ^and this video is just for fun but it's a little thing about Wei Wuxian & Jiang Cheng because their relationship makes me unwell

Day 3 of @niecest-weekend-2023
“DA-GE!”
Nie Huaisang jerked up in his bed, gasping for air. His heart raced as his eyes were darting from one corner to another, finding unseen enemies in the shadows. The loud yelling outside of his apartment scared him; was the mob coming for him? Would they finish what they started so long ago?
He jumped from his bed, tripping when the sheets his feet were tangled in stopped him. A small cry was all he allowed himself, small and almost silent but it rang loud in the night. Struggling to free himself, he could almost feel the restraining hands of Su She around him. Fighting for his life, he crawled under his desk, finding shelter from the demons of his past.
A church bell rang, indicating the start of the day, and with it, the wrathful wraiths faded into nothing. The shadows of Jin Guangyao melted into the darkness, the angry screams of this qi deviating brother died and Nie Huaisang was suddenly alone in his room.
Alone, like he'd always been.
Always alone without his brother, his other half.
No matter how much he cried, how much he looked for his brother, and asked for him desperately, no one answered. No one would answer.
Pulling up his knees, covering under his desk, he allowed himself to break down.
“Da-ge,” he sobbed, wishing for those strong hands to pat his head, for his big brother to promise him he would always be with him. To lie to him.
But Nie Mingjue never came. So many reincarnations, so many lifetimes without his One and Only, and Nie Huaisang still yearned. Still hoped. But maybe he should just accept it…
He was all alone in this world.
His parents in this reincarnation cycle were nice. A bit absent now that he was a university student, but they were always there for him. Still, they could never make up for what he lost in his first life - or at least in the first life he can remember -, and he felt a bit guilty for it. His nightmares and screams for a big brother he never had were a constant companion of his since his childhood, worrying his parents. Before he learnt how to hide his condition, he was taken to many doctors and psychiatrists to find out why a five-year-old little kid had PTSD but the only answer they could come up with was that he needs medicine.
After that, he was quick to learn how to hide his night terrors and memories from other people. After all, he still remembered how it felt to be locked in the psychiatry ward for being “insane” just because he knew he was reincarnated. Nobody believed in reincarnation for hundreds of years.
Suddenly, his cellphone rang on his nightstand. He didn't want to get up, he didn't want to crawl out of his safe space under the table, but it was Xian’s ringtone.
He would always pick up his phone for the only person, the only friend he found in this life, Wei Wuxian.
The phone rang and rang until he picked it up. Wei Wuxian was the only constant connection he had to his first life; sometimes he found nobody, but most of the time he found Wei Wuxian at least. Sometimes his friend didn't remember, sometimes he did, but he always, always ended up finding his One. He always found Lan Wangji.
Nie Huaisang wasn't sure if he remembered in this lifetime or not, his friend was always hard to understand, but he didn't find his soulmate yet.
“A-Saaaang,” whined Wei Wuxian when Nie Huaisang finally picked up his phone.
“Xian…” he sighed.
“Don't be like that! I know you love me, and you love hearing my gorgeous voice as the first thing in the morning!” Wei Wuxian has always been and always will be a gremlin. His best friend, one he appreciated, but a gremlin nonetheless.
“What do you want?”
He could basically hear the pout in his friend's voice. “Spoilsport. Okay, but you know I work at the museum, right?” He waited until Nie Huaisang give an affirmative hum. “I might have met with the love of my life today, aaaaand I need you to take over me so I can go on a date with him. Pleeeeeeaseeeee?”
He expected this - well, not the situation but Wei Wuxian finding Lan Wangji -, but it still hurt. Countless lifetimes, and he was still so fucking jealous of them, for always meeting, for always falling in love at the first sight.
“When do I have to be there?” He sighed. It wasn't like he could say no to his friend. Not now, not ever.
“I knew you were the best!!! Thank youuuuu! You have to be there in- uh- ten minutes! Byeee~”
And with that, the line was dead, leaving Nie Huaisang frustrated, but not shocked. Of course Wei Wuxian would leave it until the last fucking minute to notify him. Of course he would.
A little more than ten minutes after the phone call, he arrived at the museum. A bit breathless, a lot red and sweaty from running, looking like a mess with his braids undone and jacket hanging on him carelessly, but he was there. Like in every lifetime, he wasn't an athletic type of person in this one either.
Thankfully not many people were in the museum that morning as it was a weekday, but he had to be ready for the guided tours and the odd tourists, art students and other visitors. He already knew his tasks, being at the receiving end of Wei Wuxian’s begging puppy eyes before, so it wasn't difficult to open the tiny art museum.
What was difficult, however, to face the topic of the new temporary exhibition. Wei Wuxian should have told him. He fucking should have told him.
It was fucking “The Cultivation World: Beyond the Myths”.
The fucker-
He stopped in front of the painting that haunted his dreams. The color work faded, the time left its signs on the painting. He didn't have to read the sign to know how long it took for the artist to paint it, to know its size or its title.
He felt a presence behind him. He should have been more concerned about the visitor, but he felt right. As if the person had every right to be there, to share the moment with Nie Huaisang.
He didn't dare to look back at the person. He didn't want to be disappointed. He started at the painting, transfixed by it, focusing on the past instead of the present.
The painting wasn't one of his best works. It was, however, the most emotional one. The pain, the love, the terror and the grief… the painting was a gateway to his heart. It was not something he ever wanted to see again.
It was something he needed to see. To tell his story; to share his pain.
He felt he was being watched. It wasn't uncomfortable. It wasn't creepy.
It was familiar; safe. The visitor came closer, his steps slow but loud as they echoed in the room. His heart quickened.
It was time.
For what, he didn't know. But he felt like all of his lifetimes, all those years of grief and hopelessness were about to end.
Taking a deep breath, he turned around, his eyes immediately finding the person.
Oh.
It felt like he was punched in his chest.
“Didi…” A whispered sound, not louder than a sigh. Was it the person or was he hallucinating?
He must have been hallucinating.
The person was staring back at him, his deep eyes full of longing. His hair was black, long and braided, his mustache made his handsome face stricter, more stern.
Nie Huaisang felt his mouth dry.
“Da-ge,” he breathed. Legs buckling beneath him, the only reason he didn't fall was because of those strong and safe arms he dreamt about for so long.
“I've got you, didi. I got you.”
Nie Huaisang wept.
He was finally whole.

———————
Once the meal is complete, the rest of the Wei family trickling out, including Popo and a reluctant A-Yuan, Lan Wangji presses the talisman book into Wei Ying’s hands so he can present it to Xiongzhang. His husband smiles in gratitude.
“Lan Zhan helped with this because his calligraphy is a lot better than mine,” Wei Ying says. “These are talismans I developed to help deal with different forms of resentful energy, in terms of how to remove it safely.”
Xiongzhang is already flipping through the book, Nie Mingjue beside him and also reading over his shoulder. Jiang Wanyin stands for a better look.
“Different forms?” Nie Huaisang asks. “Isn’t it all just resentful energy?”
Wei Ying shakes his head, adopting something of the air of a scholar, but he’s clearly a little restrained, perhaps still reluctant to discuss his cultivation, fearing judgment.
“It’s dependent on a variety of factors, including the emotion powering the resentment and what ‘vessel’ the resentment inhabits, if any—like you have to handle yao, mo, gui, and guai differently, but it’s even more complex than that basic categorization because of the different factors.”
He’s referring to the differences between resentful creatures, and it reminds Lan Wangji of the disastrous conversion between his husband and his uncle during the lectures at the Cloud Recesses. Wei Ying has been exploring the different ways such creatures should be classified, and has started to identify factors that complicate that classification.
The research is groundbreaking, as few have ever studied resentment for reasons other than gaining power, Wei Ying trying to make the best of his situation by improving cultivation knowledge. Lan Wangji has had the opportunity to read his notes as he transcribed them, and he is endlessly amazed by his brilliance.
“You can pull resentment from objects?” Nie Mingjue asks, his expression inscrutable.
The attention makes Wei Ying shrink a little in his seat, and Lan Wangji takes his hand, squeezing it to reassure him. His hesitance to discuss his cultivation is palpable, and partly his fault for having judged him without listening, even if it was out of concern.
“Often each case requires a slightly different solution, but I can generally figure it out, given time. Some objects can be intrinsically connected to the resentment, while others are simply inhabited by it at random.”
Nie Mingjue considers that and nods, keeping whatever thoughts he has to himself and going back to perusing the book as the next page is turned.
“Truly, Wuxian, these are revolutionary, almost too much for a dowry,” Xiongzhang says finally.
“It’s dowry for Lan Zhan, so if anything it’s far too little,” Wei Ying replies with a laugh.
Lan Wangji’s ears heat at his husband’s regard for him, but he also worries Wei Ying is too self-effacing and doesn’t credit his own brilliance enough—Xiongzhang’s assessment of them isn’t overblown; these talismans are truly priceless in their genius and usefulness.
“Wei Ying’s worth cannot be quantified,” he tells him seriously.
He is gratified when Wei Ying blushes deeply and hides his face, overly dramatic as he tends to be when complimented sincerely, something that he never finds boring.
“Hanguang-Jun, spare your poor husband. Your sincerity is too much,” he murmurs.
“Since when have you been shy at compliments?” Jiang Wanyin asks, amused.
Wei Ying only responds by sticking out his tongue, and his brother rolls his eyes good-naturedly.
“I have made a separate copy of the book for Wei Ying to keep, which may eventually be placed in the library at Lotus Pier,” Lan Wangji tells Jiang Wanyin, ignoring their antics.
He receives a nod of thanks, the Jiang sect leader’s attention already caught when Xiongzhang turns another page, the talismans drawing attention.
“Wei-xiong, we finished the rest of the yuefu,” Nie Huaisang comments, not as riveted by the book of talismans as the others. “Your baihua is better than mine and Wei Ning’s, so you should go over it to make sure it’s right.”
Wei Ning ducks his head at the acknowledgment of his help, shy, and Wei Qing nods her thanks to Nie Huaisang for including her brother. There was concern that he would not be accepted by their visitors, which would cause issues with any swearing of siblinghood, but it’s clear by how Nie Huaisang treats him, giving him back some dignity through not only including him, but also cleaning up his appearance so he once again looks like a young master, that their worries were needless.
Nie Huaisang pulls out the sheaf of parchment containing the poem and sets it in front of Wei Ying with a flourish, clearly proud of his work, and Wei Ying shifts through them until he finds the spot he read last. Wei Ning helpfully brings out an inkstone and brush for him to use if he needs to make changes.
While the respective sect leaders pore over the book of talismans, the rest of them peruse the draft, Wei Ying correcting the baihua as he goes, and once rewriting an entire line in a way that makes it fit the yuefu more organically.
“Nie-xiong, I can’t adopt all the street kids in Yiling,” he says emphatically, though his tone betrays him. “I mean, we can feed them now, at least, but what about when it comes time to move to Lotus Pier?”
“The sect needs people,” Jiang Wanyin cuts in before Nie Huaisang can speak, barely looking up from the book. “You don’t have to adopt them as your kids, just as Wei if they want your name. The ones who have the aptitude can become cultivators, and the others we’ll find a place for. There’s room here now for them, and you and Lan Wangji can start their education.”
Wei Ying stares at him, clearly flummoxed, but Lan Wangji knows this is something his husband would love to do—to give children like himself a home so they won’t have to live in the streets and fight dogs for food.
Nie Huaisang clears his throat pointedly.
“Wei-xiong, it will help with your image. No one will believe the Jin rumors, especially with a gaggle of kids hanging off you.”
“Unless they say we eat them or that I use them in some sort of dark rituals,” Wei Ying mutters darkly. “I’ve heard worse said about the Yiling Patriarch.”
Lan Wangji hates that those rumors exist. They are such an anathema to everything that is Wei Ying, beyond insulting almost to the point of blasphemy against his soul.
“You well know no one will notice the disappearance of street children, so there will be time. By the time it’s noticed enough, I’ll be able to take care of any rumors,” Nie Huaisang says, a determined twist to his lips. “A war without fighting is something I can handle, particularly if it subdues our enemies with less turmoil.”
Nie Mingjue drags his attention from the book to study his younger brother, clearly reassessing him, something Nie Huaisang doesn’t even notice, instead leaning over the table, absorbed in reading the changes Wei Ying has made to the yuefu so far.
“Now that we have enough supplies, I can start a clinic,” Wei Qing adds. “That should sow more goodwill, and we can bring meals for the street children.”
“That’ll work better than anything else—they’ll be wary, so it’ll take time,” Wei Ying says distantly, his gaze unfocused.
Lan Wangji can only assume he is thinking about his own childhood, surviving alone for years, and he remembers the scars from dog bites on Wei Ying’s legs. He offers what comfort he can, placing a comforting hand on his back, and is pleased when his husband relaxes at his touch.
Eventually Xiongzhang and Nie Mingjue wander off with Wei Qing to visit some of the warded areas and discuss future night hunts in the Burial Mounds, and Jiang Wanyin tags along—likely he will also send juniors to night hunt, but he’s really accompanying Wei Qing.
Nie Zonghui stays with Nie Huaisang, but generally stays out of the yuefu discussion except when it involves cultivation; at one point he and Wei Ying have a theoretical conversation about yin energy that ultimately adds nothing to the manuscript. Lan Wangji readily admits it is beyond his understanding, and Nie Huaisang spends the entire conversation looking as lost as Lan Wangji feels, though he is pleased the Nie first disciple isn’t balking at such a discussion or treating Wei Ying with the disdain he’s seen far too many of the gentry levy toward him.
The review and discussion of the yuefu comes to an end less than a ke before the others rejoin them, at which point Nie Huaisang dramatically announces the more interesting changes, largely to gloat over the debates he won.
Xiongzhang at least feigns interest, while Nie Mingjue shakes his head at his didi’s antics, but it’s rather a relief when Wei Ying and Wei Ning both jolt slightly. Not only does he prefer not to have the last few hours rehashed, but he is anxious for the swearing ceremony, if only for the sense that, with that complete, they will be that much closer to bringing Wei Ying home.
Jiang Wanyin seems to understand a moment later, asking “Jie?”
Wei Ying smiles, almost too bright, as though he too is feeling the weight of it all, and Lan Wangji takes his arm to urge him to his feet, letting the gesture remind his husband that he faces nothing alone now.
The Nies and Xiongzhang decide against accompanying them to the base of the Burial Mounds, allowing Wei Ying time to collect himself while accompanied by those he has learned to trust to help him.
Jin Zixuan, surprisingly, is not dressed in gold, but a robe of soft purple with embroidered pink peonies on the hems of the collar and sleeves, a nod to his Jin heritage in the peonies and their color, but also to the Jiang in the color of the robe. Jiang Yanli is wearing a pink robe in the Jin hue embroidered with purple lotuses, an interesting counterbalance to her husband. It is perhaps a nod to visiting the bride’s home and the joining of family, but also one that allows them to stand out a bit less, perhaps looking like late-leaving Jiang wedding guests. They are accompanied by a contingent of Jiang cultivators, as well as a carriage drawn by a duo of nervous-looking horses, which will need to be hidden near the base of the Burial Mounds from any prying eyes.
As soon as they come into view, Jiang Yanli rushes through the ward to her siblings, fussing over Wei Ying’s health, though he has to disentangle himself to key Jin Zixuan through the wards. The latter bows in greeting, and he returns the gesture a bit awkwardly. Some of the Jiang disciples also need to be keyed in.
Once inside, Jin Zixuan only takes notice of Wei Qing and Wei Ning when Wei Ying introduces them, all eyes for his wife, and he bows to them to greet them as well as Lan Wangji and Jiang Wanyin.
Jiang Wanyin passes orders to his men, and Wei Ying tells them where the horses can be tethered.
“It’s where we kept the horses from the labor camp before we sold them,” he says, glancing at Jin Zixuan to gauge his reaction as the Jiang disciples handle unhitching the animals and unloading a number of qiankun pouches from the carriage.
Jin Zixuan simply nods, clearly unconcerned with the matter. Likely the fate of the horses was an afterthought, given the situation.
While they make the trek up to the settlement, Jin Zixuan thanks the siblings for rescuing and protecting Jiang Yanli and her brothers, outright acknowledging the debt, and even apologizing for his sect’s role in Wei Ning’s death.
“There is quite a bit I have been kept in the dark about,” Jin Zixuan says. “A-Li has asked me to discard my preconceptions and see the truth for myself. The rumors about Wei Wuxian have seemed a stretch at best, anyway.”
Wei Ying glances at him, clearly nonplussed since his main interactions with Jin Zixuan have involved physical violence.
“You’ve hit me, but I deserved it both times, and what any of us did during the Sunshot Campaign shouldn’t count against us,” Jin Zixuan explains when he sees the expression. “Except the noble acts of We— er, Wei Qing and Wei Qionglin, of course, but the things we had to do in wartime, to defeat Wen Ruohan…”
He breaks off with a shake of his head.
“We all did what we had to do,” Jiang Wanyin says, taking over. “And we’ll be discussing more about the why at the settlement.”
Lan Wangji catches Wei Ying’s shoulder when he stumbles over a root, keeping him from falling, and Wei Qing elbows Jiang Wanyin none too gently.
“You lot can handle that—Wei Wuxian needs his treatment, and we can reconvene at dinner.”
Blessedly, while Jin Zixuan looks curious, he seems to know better than to pry, and the rest of the trek is spent in an awkward silence.
As soon as they are within view of the settlement, A-Yuan breaks away from Popo and runs to greet his guma, but when he catches sight of their new visitor he skids to a halt so quickly he falls down, wailing and calling “Diedie, Baba!”
While the others freeze, clearly taken aback by A-Yuan’s reaction, Lan Wangji springs forward with Wei Ying to pick up their son before his husband can hurt himself. The child clings to them, sobbing and babbling about the “bad forehead man,” and he realizes he must be referring to the zhushazhi that identifies Jin Zixuan as a member of the Jin clan.
When Jin Zixuan tries to move closer and speak, clearly hoping to calm A-Yuan, the wails turn to terrified shrieks, so full of deep-seated terror that it hurts Lan Wangji to witness. He can see Wei Ying is similarly affected.
Wei Qing joins them while they try to calm him, Wei Ying trying to remind him that this is the good Jin that Jiang Yanli married, her lips pursed as she assesses the situation. A-Yuan is too beyond comfort for the words to reach him, in near-hysterics, and seeing him so distressed makes it clear how badly he was traumatized by what the survivors experienced in the labor camp.
Ultimately, she turns to Jiang Yanli and mimes wiping the vermillion mark away, and blessedly she does so after consulting with Jin Zixuan, her horrified-looking husband completely cooperative. Unfortunately, it does nothing to calm A-Yuan, and Jiang Wanyin quickly organizes the Jiang contingent to block Jin Zixuan from view.
By this time, Xiongzhang and the Nies have arrived, drawn by A-Yuan, along with Popo. Several of the refugees also gather, their expressions sad but devoid of surprise.
“Jiang Wanyin, can you handle updating Jin-gongzi while we handle this?” Wei Qing asks over A-Yuan’s crying, her exhaustion bleeding through into her tone. “Popo and our other guests will be able to help you, particularly Nie Huaisang with the yuefu. I doubt Wei Wuxian wants to be present for most of it, anyway.”
Fortunately, this is readily agreed to by all parties, aside from A-Yuan, who has broken into a coughing fit. By the time the others have left, he’s lost part of his lunch in the dirt and is a whimpering limpet in Lan Wangji’s arms.
“Diedie and Baba won’t let anything bad happen,” Wei Ying tells the boy, even though he’s beyond hearing, having cried himself most of the way to sleep, “and Qing-gugu and Ning-shushu won’t either. You’re safe, baobei.”
Wei Ying starts to use a sleeve to wipe A-Yuan’s face, paying no mind to the high quality of the clothing, but Wei Qing stops him, handing him a clean cloth from a pocket to use instead. He speaks gently and soothingly, just repeating that he’s safe, until the child’s eyes close, his breath hitching occasionally as though he’s still crying even asleep.
Wei Qing gestures toward the cave and Lan Wangji leads Wei Ying, rearranging A-Yuan in his arms so he can guide him by a sleeve, recognizing that this has shaken his husband. They didn’t know how deeply A-Yuan had been scarred in his time at the Jin labor camp, but this has made it very clear in a horrifying and unexpected way to all present. Though they spoke to the boy beforehand to make him aware of Jin Zixuan’s visit, all the warning in the world could do nothing to prevent his terror at just the sight of the zhushazhi, so deeply had he been traumatized.
“None of us could have known,” Wei Qing says as they enter the cave, “so don’t blame yourselves—I can practically hear you doing that, both of you.”
Lan Wangji knows full well that won’t prevent Wei Ying from doing so, and it will be a struggle not to blame himself, especially as he saw the wreckage of the labor camp. They both know what the rescued people here went through, but neither of them considered A-Yuan, with the boy so bubbly and bright.
They remove A-Yuan’s soiled and dirty outer robes, and Wei Ying helps him arrange A-Yuan on the bed, nestled in blankets, his touches gentle as though the boy is made of glass, and then arranges himself nearby after stripping to his zhong yi trousers, making sure he can hold one of A-Yuan’s hands as though to remind him he’s not alone even in his sleep.
Wei Qing’s treatment focuses on his hips, and by the end of it Wei Ying is asleep, as per usual, needing only for the blankets to be drawn up around him, something Lan Wangji does as soon as the last acupuncture needle has been removed. He shifts A-Yuan to be closer to Wei Ying, who instinctively puts an arm around the boy in his sleep.
“I’ll go handle our guests, and come collect you for supper—I expect we’ll do the swearing ceremony afterward,” Wei Qing says brusquely, running a gentle hand through A-Yuan’s hair in a way that belies her tone. “I’ll bring fresh robes for A-Yuan.”
She isn’t the type to offer potentially empty reassurances, and so Lan Wangji isn’t surprised when she simply gathers her supplies and slides the curtain shut behind her without another word.
Lan Wangji is left to the quiet of Wei Ying and A-Yuan’s soft breathing. He can’t help but feel off-balance, A-Yuan’s heartbreaking reaction unsettling. The worry is unavoidable, with one goal so close to being met and yet the relief tempered now with the revelation of the scars on their son’s psyche.
As difficult as it is, he must trust in the others, and so he sets up an inkwell so he can transcribe more of Wei Ying’s notes to put the next half-shichen or so to good use, as his place is beside his husband and son.
—————
So all the Auspicious Eight are at the Burial Mounds ready to swear siblinghood. And yet a wrench in the works: A-Yuan’s trauma triggered by seeing Jin Zixuan’s zhushazhi, the vermillion dot. I did research to figure out how it would be referred to—meta on Tumblr is amazing.
This was a necessary stopping point for this chapter, as it would’ve gone on another 3000 words and taken much longer to get out otherwise. I promise this fic isn’t abandoned, just slow to update as a result of having multiple in-progress multichapter fics and my health issues.
Unsurprisingly, comorbidities popped up in the health area. As expected, treating the primary ones revealed more that need to be treated. It’s a frustrating journey, but I have a wonderful team of doctors that I’ve put together and we’re slowly getting on track to recovery. Good news: I don’t have any markers in tests of other autoimmune diseases. Just the one.

Pissing off Jiang Cheng until he stomps off won’t work because this Jiang Cheng doesn’t hate him yet and also is slightly better-adjusted and usually Wei Wuxian is very proud of that but right now it’s highly inconvenient.
Wei Wuxian has some regrets about losing his ability to manipulate his brother (chp. 6)

Xichen feels light-headed. He feels shocked, and angry. He has never told anyone such a thing, but Lan Zhan is giving Xichen a look of utter betrayal.
“You told him?” Lan Zhan whispers. “When?”
Wei Wuxian takes Lan Zhan's hand. “About twenty years from now.”
Wei Wuxian starts again from the beginning.

Jiang Cheng, the Golden Core, and why it's love. [PART 2]
I ended part one by noting that the burial mound siege wasn't the end of their relationship, but it is not the reconnection of it yet either.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng capturing and torturing people who cultivate like Wei Wuxian, believing they could be possessed by him, is definitely something that would make you think of hatred. So far though, he has not actually come back into contact with Wei Wuxian, neither through the constant spirit summoning or possession trials.
Checking for possession in this moment is especially important, because this is the closest he has been to finding Wei Wuxian since his death. The fact that he's spent the last 13 years doing this is. Unhinged honestly. Even Lan Wangji didn't go out searching for him.
We all know that Lan Wangji knew Mo Xuanyu was actually Wei Wuxian because of WangXian, but Jiang Cheng heavily suspects it’s him due to Wen Ning being the force corpse summoned.
No matter who might’ve followed WWX’s cultivation methods, summoning WN is probably something no one else has ever tried much less succeeded at. (Later, we learn why, as we learn how Nie Huaisang and Jin Guangyao are both playing their own game, but for now, all we know is that WN hasn’t been seen for at least 13 years.)
Later, we see that Wei Wuxian is scared of dogs, like to the point of potentially being a phobia due to PTSD, and this is what confirms his theory that MXY is still somehow Wei Wuxian even without the possession. Rather than a question of demonic cultivation, this is actual experience with Wei Wuxian's fears, personality, and thought processes.
Tumblr media
His emotional state here really shows his conflicting emotions regarding Wei Wuxian and his return, as well.
Tumblr media
“Don’t you…have anything to say to me?”
In the novels, it’s noted that Jiang Cheng speaks softly in reply. “You won’t repent, just as expected.”
“And you haven’t improved either.”
I think it's interesting that this^ is what makes Jiang Cheng angry, not Wei Wuxian admitting he has no idea what to say to him. This makes me think he wanted an apology or an acknowledgement in some way, rather than an explanation on how he got his body.
“It’s all your fault that Jin Ling is made fun of like he is now. Don’t you forget how his parents died!” This anger makes total sense, and unfortunately lacks the information around the circumstances that led to Jin Zixuan's death. he's not wrong though, and I'll come back to this.
Wei Wuxian also admitted as soon as he learned it was Jin Ling, that he would've never let someone speak to him that way, so Jiang Cheng's defense here is not one to criticize in general, no matter if the words here are equally harsh.
More than that though, throughout the present period, their interactions are sporadic and limited. Somehow, we go from this tense exchange to one's that begin to unravel more of Jiang Cheng's feelings regarding the entire thing.
When Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian locate Nie Mingjue’s head in Jin Guangyao’s room and attempt to confront him, he is able to attack and force Wei Wuxian to grab his Suiban, leading to his identity being revealed.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling protests here, but Jiang Cheng is visibly unsure, questioning if the possession part could’ve been wrong despite Zidian, because of the sword unsealing itself.
This is his confirmation that Wei Wuxian has returned to the land of the living. After 13 years of searching and torturing people under suspicion (and guilt of demonic cultivation), he's making this face.
In the novels, he’s noted as looking “incredibly upset.” and also that he was “seeming to ponder what action to take.”
Unintentionally, this expression, this moment of hesitation (in a room full of killing intent mid you) reveals just how complicated their relationship actually is. Normally, if you hated someone and had them brought low, you'd take the chance to strike. We see that here with everyone else in the room, later Jin Ling (despite his own messy feelings over it), and later with Nie Huaisang.
Here though, he pauses. Jin Ling had more initiative to harm Wei Wuxian than him.
And at the second burial mound siege, Jiang Cheng led his people into the Den and was willing to consider Wei Wuxian’s theories. It’s unconscious, but he holds that judgment and intellect in high enough regard to actually approach it, rather than dismiss it. When Wei Wuxian makes himself a target, and takes Lan Wangji off with him, Jiang Cheng decides to help too, with no request from anyone. Jin Ling follows AFTER his uncle.
At the end of the fight, when everyone decided to go to Lotus Pier, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji followed and Jiang Cheng just…didn’t say either way. And when he asks Jin Ling who bullied him, the assumption that it was Wei Wuxian here makes sense in this context specifically. Note that he uses ‘Wei Ying’ in his thoughts.
You can say what you want about Jiang Cheng, but he protects his nephew undoubtedly. Is he perfect about it? No, but I do not expect the same tenderness Yanli could give him. His own experiences with parenting shape the way he responds. Still, Jin Ling tells Wei Wuxian outright that Jiang Cheng has never hit him, and yes, he can be harsh but seems to be trying to avoid belittling him. He is actually looking out for Jin Ling's safety and actively trying to support his cultivation (just not in the best way). Then again, it's hard to change such deeply ingrained responses.
Also, I think that if we're going to call Jiang Cheng abusive (though I personally disagree) for being crass and harsh towards Jin Ling, then we should consider he is an abuse victim and hasn't broken every single toxic trait he's learned. It is not a moral failure, and it actually makes his character more nuanced. So.
Anyways, for the most part, things are ambivalent.
It’s not until Wei Wuxian takes Lan Wangji around Lotus Pier, and they do the tree jump hug thing that things seem remiss. Jiang Cheng witnesses it and sees them going to the Ancestral Hall. More than any of his harsh words towards their ‘friendship’, he’s angry because Wei Wuxian is going without showing respect to Jiang Cheng or even his parents. This is audacious of Wei Wuxian, if only because he didn’t bother to tell Jiang Cheng he’d like to visit the Ancestral Hall. He doesn't live there anymore and their relationship is still very much damaged, so honestly, I can kind of understand being upset about the Ancestral Hall being approached the way it was.
He still blames Wei Wuxian for the destruction of Lotus Pier and Lan Wangji being there is fuel to the fire. Due to his own perceptions, Iang Cheng sees this as a mockery of his parents and their deaths, so I’m not surprised he reacts so negatively. Is it strictly true or fair, no, but it’s also something they’ve never actually talked about. It’s still pent-up between them.
Note that Jiang Cheng only makes a vaguely homophobic comment after Wei Wuxian tells him to shut up (for insulting LWJ). He’s being a dick sure, but this comment was specifically to goad Wei Wuxian into fighting. It’s working. Jiang Cheng’s words after this make me think he’s angrier about the introduction of Lan Wangji to his own parents because of their ‘thing for each other.’ He clearly read the intention of a marriage blessing and I think that’s what’s bothering him the most here. Why? This: “...If you two have any integrity, you shouldn’t have come here and…”
Again. Jiang Cheng points to Wei Wuxian saving Lan Wangji as being the catalyst that destroyed Lotus Pier. This is specifically what he's referencing.
Wei Wuxian strikes first, and then they’re fighting. Which is what Jiang Cheng was looking for. He can’t totally explain why he’s upset, so he argues instead.
Wen Ning decides to tell Jiang Cheng about the Golden Core transfer because he was hurting Wei Wuxian, with his actions but also with the burden of said secret. Jiang Cheng’s reaction to this – the secret itself and his own feelings around it/Wei Wuxian – are pretty justified, and instead of starting a fight later, he mostly shares his true feelings about it.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng keeps responding to it with anger, but right here, this is shock and hurt, as far as I can tell. His next words make me believe that: “Lies!” “Lies! All of you are lying to me!”
Right now, he has no idea what to think of Wei Wuxian. He has no idea what’s really happened and who’s told him the truth. It completely upheaved his current perceptions. He does ask others to try pulling out Suiban. Because he knows, on some level, that WWX’s sword should not be ‘unsealed’ and that Baoshan Sanren should’ve been much more elusive.
I think the most interesting aspect here is the result of it.
Jiang Cheng does what Wen Ning asks and once he enters the Guanyin Temple, well. Jin Guangyao taunts, throwing his confusion and whirlwind behavior in his face.
Tumblr media
His anger here is not at all surprising, considering this is a private issue. The fact that it’s being used against him during this little skirmish is not a good sign for him. It's forcing him to acknowledge that Wen Ning was telling the truth, in a way that even unsheathing Suiban himself can't.
Jiang Cheng is upset here because he’s having all of his accomplishments since the Sunshot Campaign started questioned, diminished, and attributed to Wei Wuxian. Once again, someone is telling him that he will never be good enough, and by mentioning a golden elixir, even implies that he must ‘cheat’ in order to even match Wei Wuxian. Of course, like most people, being compared to someone this way is hurtful, and to have it done repeatedly by so many people who see that other person as more likable and more accomplished, is going to leave deep seated issues.
Still, the moment JGY threatened Wei Wuxian’s life, he was over there to protect him without a thought. JGY was intentionally riling Jiang Cheng up in order to put him in that position. With his ability to read people, he quickly realized that despite any potential anger and hurt, he wouldn’t allow Wei Wuxian to be injured, not when he’s just learned about the Golden Core Transfer. By doing this, he was able to injure Jiang Cheng as he was slower to defend himself.
In response to Wei Wuxian saying “I told [Wen Ning] so many times not to say it!” is anger first. This is probably the most blatant he is about his own insecurities concerning and his own capabilities.
He’s mocking Wei Wuxian’s choice as playing the hero and living up to their sect’s motto in the way he couldn’t.
It’s interesting that Jiang Cheng is overshadowed by Wei Wuxian to the point of viewing himself as inferior at everything; to the point of needing to question who or what he is. This sounded strange to me at first, but subconsciously people recognize that Wei Wuxian’s abilities are higher despite who he is – the son of a servant (or the potential bastard of JFM) according to what’s convenient. Jiang Cheng is lower here because his parentage is “no match” for Wei Wuxian's. The parents aren’t mentioned outright, but why else would a sect heir, and now a sect leader, be pitted against his head disciple and viewed as a failure for not matching up?
It's the same reason Madam Yu was so angry.
Because failing to match Wei Wuxian is seen as a slight against the Jiang sect. She was angry that Jiang Fengmian kept acknowledging Wei Wuxian but not his own son and heir. It’s why the gossip was so bad, and why it was getting to her. It’s also why Jiang Cheng can't help but be jealous. It's a conflict of status. He feels much lower, but his status is nothing of the sort. Wei Wuxian’s accomplishments are higher and more respected, but his place is much more tenuous.
This is not either of their faults. It’s the results of classism and parental conflict. The Jiang parent's and their personal strife leads to the belittlement of their children, and the jealousy directed at Wei Wuxian leads to a conflicting position. The son of a servant and a head disciple who should be good, but not better than Jiang Cheng. The son of Canse Sanren who's as well known as Madam Yu, but also brings her disrespect and dishonor in the rumors. Whichever causes the most tension at the time.
Also, yes, I know Jiang Cheng’s rant in the novel is much more harsh, and his actions more impulsive, but that doesn’t really change anything. People do not act rationally when they are this upset. Some of the things he says in here show how belittled he feels (ex. “You never tell me anything. You treat me like a fool!” and “What am I? Does it serve me right to be blinded by your brilliance?!”)
When Jiang Cheng lashes out here, he’s also questioning their positions, even before he says it outright. He tries to shove Wei Wuxian and we can say whatever about this choice, but to be honest, I very rarely see people who are close peers much less those raised in the same household (whether they’re allowed to consider themselves brothers or not) approach anger or hurt without being a bit of a childish dick about it. Lan Wangji is quick to interfere of course, so Wei Wuxian isn’t actually hurt.
Tumblr media
I already noted why he’s asking these questions. ‘What am I if the son of a servant, even one taken in by my family, can outshine me in everything? How can I live up to that? Why can’t I, when I’m a sect heir? My status is higher than yours, but you are much higher than me.’
Again. It’s not intentional, but it is driven by classism, not just sibling jealousy.  Being so close to one another in their youths makes his perspective on Wei Wuxian's class more flexible than his parents, but it also means the discrepancy between them, and the public opinion is much heavier. It drives those insecurities deeper.
Jiang Cheng going on to mention the deaths that Wei Wuxian caused. It’s no surprise he still blames WWX for being the catalyst in Lotus Pier’s destruction, but I think him bringing up Jin Ling's parents is different. The politics around the Wen’s attacking Lotus Pier are complicated enough that he only mentions his parents rather than the whole sect, as he did in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
Jin Zixuan and Yanli, though? These must hurt in such a specific way. Wei Wuxian is more to blame for these deaths than the others, because both of them went out into an unsafe situation to help him.
Wei Wuxian was increasingly unstable, his position on its very last leg, and his powers caused the injuries. Yanli is more complicated, if only because she was injured but would’ve survived if she hadn’t stepped in front of a sword strike meant for Wei Wuxian. They chose to protect him, in two different ways. Jin Zixuan was trying to diffuse the situation enough to get Wei Wuxian out safely, and Yanli wanted to calm Wei Wuxian down enough to control the corpses, to get him out of that situation, and more than anything -- she wanted to see him again.
Jiang Cheng’s anger is not unjustified, to be honest. Is it complicated? Yes. Everyone else's actions also caused those deaths. But emotions are not logical nor are they simple.
And then we get to the crux of the issue, in my opinion.
Tumblr media
This more than anything is why he’s angry. Because breaking it meant Jiang Cheng could not lean on him or count on him for support, which he definitely needed while rebuilding the sect.
Because it meant his sect (and Jiang Cheng himself, maybe) was not worth protecting. Wei Wuxian did choose to protect ‘outsiders’; he may have done so because it was the right thing to do, because he owed a debt that he couldn’t ever really repay, but it is still a choice that puts the Jiang sect (JC) second. When he asks: “what did you take our family as?”, that is what I hear.
Jiang Cheng is asking whether or not he should or is allowed to hate Wei Wuxian. LWJ gets in between them and Jiang Cheng decides he can fight if necessary. And to be honest, I can’t help but pay attention to everyone's expressions when he steps closer to Wei Wuxian. Everyone looks so surprised to see he’s in pain, that he’s crying. Everyone takes his at face value, so they miss how much he carries behind all of it.
He’s so angry at Wei Wuxian, maybe even hates him, because more than anything, it hurts.
Tumblr media
This is just all that pain and grief coming out. Jiang Cheng lost Wei Wuxian when he broke that promise, and after having lost his parents, then his brother-in-law and sister, that was all he had left.
He doesn’t understand why Wei Wuxian couldn’t tell him these things. It would’ve hurt much less if he knew the truth, I imagine. Because for this entire time, he didn’t have any explanation for Wei Wuxian’s behavior. This, honestly, tells me that he wanted Wei Wuxian to stay. We know Jiang Cheng wanted to protect him, as Yanli did, and now he knows that Wei Wuxian wanted to protect him, too.
When Wei Wuxian apologizes for breaking his promise, Jiang Cheng is upset with himself for needing it. For wanting it. He feels weak for not being able to just hate Wei Wuxian. Because that’s the thing.
Jiang Cheng asked those questions because he struggles to reconcile feeling like he should hate WWX – maybe actually hating him on some level – and still loving him.
And yes. Jiang Cheng loves him.
He may see Wei Wuxian in a position of both servitude (as his head disciple, regarding the expectations around him being a sect heir, and Wei Wuxian being of a servant’s line) and one of admiration and inferiority to. But they’re close enough to bicker and be tactile as siblings would, but not enough to be considered siblings by anyone else.
They see this causal behavior as one of disrespect, and at Jiang Cheng’s lowest and most politically unstable moments (sunshot and after), he began to see it that way as well. It’s much harder to ignore everyone shouting these kinds of things at you constantly when you have next to no one countering that perception. MianMian and Lan Wangji both tried to stop people from spreading this idea but they couldn’t. Jiang Cheng couldn’t either, and the fact that they fed into pre-existing insecurities makes them very easy to internalize and manipulate. Don’t forget that he’s literally 17-20 when this is mostly happening.
When Jiang Cheng apologized to Wei Wuxian, and he responded like this, I was questioning if he chose to do it out of obligation.
Tumblr media
Why would he say this? Is it because Madam Yu and Jiang Fengmian asked him to take care of their children? Because the Jiang family took him in?
Or because Jiang Cheng accused him of betraying his family?
Wei Wuxian giving his Golden Core to JC is not something anyone would’ve requested of him to fulfill his obligations to the Jiangs. It was an experimental procedure that hadn’t even been heard of outside of Wen Qing and her family. Wei Wuxian chose to do it because he wanted to protect Jiang Cheng. To protect from his grief and his guilt over not being able to get revenge for their sect. To protect him from feeling inferior. Jiang Cheng was literally at his lowest point and was arguably suicidal. After bringing JC to someplace safe enough for treatment, he’d already fulfilled his duties to the Jiang family. But choosing an extremely risky procedure, to give someone a part of himself that the cultivation world considered near sacred, wouldn’t have crossed any cultivators mind.
Choosing to do it anyway. How is that NOT out of love?
It’s just that he didn't tell Jiang Cheng the truth because it would hurt him. And by hurting him this way, making him feel as if none of his accomplishments were his own, he would be dishonoring his obligations to the Jiang parents.
Wei Wuxian’s own feelings here are more complex. He’s grateful that Jiang Fengmian took him in, so he approaches the Transfer in a way that emphasizes that to reduce the sense of loss. He says as much in the novels:
If he hadn’t been taken in, he’d never have a golden core and would never feel that loss, but he’d never have met Yanli or Jiang Cheng either. So, duty is easier. But this is AFTER.
“If it had not been for Jiang Fengmian bringing him to Lotus Pier, Wei Wuxian might never have crossed paths with the cultivation world. He would never have been conscious of such a mystical and magnificent realm.”
“[...] He’d have had no way of cultivating, let alone a chance to form a golden core. And at that thought, he’d feel a lot better.”
Wei Wuxian wanted Jiang Cheng to live, so he did something that would ensure it, even at the cost of his own health. Regardless of the parents, these three value each other's lives enough to risk their own. It’s shown to us repeatedly. All of these are reciprocal and are done without any need for debt or obligation.
The reason Wei Wuxian says it this way is because he thinks that Jiang Cheng shouldn’t have to apologize for his words. From his perspective, Jiang Cheng believes he should repay the Jiang family, because of how he's been saying these things.
I say it like that because Jiang Cheng doesn’t like that response. He questions it. To my parents? To my sister? And then Wei Wuxian asks them not to talk about it, to let it be in the past. He’s doing this to protect himself and yet inadvertently implying that he chose to do it because of literally everyone BUT Jiang Cheng.
Tumblr media
It sounds like “I did this to repay your family, not for you.” and that bothers him. But he doesn’t say anything else because Wei Wuxian told him not to. Wei Wuxian said it because he thought it would make Jiang Cheng feel less betrayed. They’ve completely talked past each other and don’t even know it.
He doesn’t look relieved here. Seriously. This is not the face I’d be making if those words relieved me. His face is scrunched and his teeth are clenched. He looks pained. He’s trying to keep the rest of his tears in.
It hurts him to hear that, but he can't say anything now.
And with the reveal that Su She casted the Hundred Holes curse on Jin Zixun, Wei Wuxian is rightfully feeling that he was wronged. The moment Jin Guangyao says that, actually, Wei Wuxian would be besieged regardless and would die young, Jiang Cheng gets angry. It hurts to hear, because it ended up being true. JGY knows it and uses that to his advantage, but only after being called the son of a prostitute. (Before that, he's just generally taunting.)
By laying all the blame for Wei Wuxian’s death on Jiang Cheng, he’s hitting a surprising sore point. Jiang Cheng feels guilty over aiding in Wei Wuxian’s death. He knows that the wedge driven between them happened because of his insecurities. And he knows that by allowing the other sects to target Wei Wuxian rather than risk the sect to back him, he pretty much set the stage for Wei Wuxian's death. It took a year, but once there was a ‘reason’, he ended up with no choice but to siege the Burial Mounds. Once again, these things happened due to more than just themselves. They did not have a path outside of this one due to where they both were.
I like the detail that Jin Ling has to hold him back here, but Wei Wuxian also won’t let it slide. He immediately comes to JC’s defense once JGY starts to imply that JC killed him. (He corrected Wen Ning on this, too.)
(Side thing: They both care for Jin Ling. Yes, Jiang Cheng is rude, but he does try his best to spoil and protect him, and when Jin Guangyao takes Jin Ling hostage, he’s upset to the point that he uses the affectionate form of his name. This also causes Wei Wuxian to immediately try to help in response, due to being familiar with Jiang Cheng’s different tones.)
At the end of all of this, Jiang Cheng had wanted to tell Wei Wuxian something just before he left, but didn’t. I particularly like his expression in the manhua.
Tumblr media
“I didn’t get caught by the Wen Clan because I insisted on returning to Lotus Pier to retrieve my parents’ bodies. When you went to buy rations in that small town during our escape, a group of Wen cultivators caught up to us. I noticed them early and left the spot where I’d been sitting to hide in a corner of the street. I didn’t get caught, but they were patrolling, and they would have surely bumped into you while you were getting us food.
So I ran out and lured them away.”
Tumblr media
TL;DR
Like most people, Jiang Cheng’s words and actions don’t always match, and they don’t always say what he’s feeling. Can he hurt people with his behaviors, yes. But honestly, this is just how people work and isn't a sign of one-dimensional villainy. He hurts others with his actions and other people’s actions hurt him. It’s just the nature of being involved with others, and especially in loving them.
Keeping his actions within his relationships in full context is really the only way to understand his motivations, emotions, and why other characters feel the way they do about him. This is about how Jiang Cheng’s insecurities and strained familial relationships influences how he responds to Wei Wuxian over the course of their lives, how politics shaped the fallout, and ultimately why it was not duty that led to the Golden Core transfer, on either side.
They didn’t tell each other about those sacrifices – ones they made out of love for each other and with little regard for anything else – because knowing would hurt the other.
Sacrifice as a form of love is a theme between these two. Sacrifice was a form of love between many others too. Yanli, Wen Qing, Lan Wangji, Madam Yu, even. An element of obligation doesn't actually counteract that. Everyone has some level of obligation to the people around them.
Even so. They deal with their issues by pretending they don’t have issues, so of course it builds up. Of course, Jiang Cheng’s personality results in a grudge, but that doesn’t mean it’s all he feels. It’s complicated. I think with people you’re close to, it’s easy to resent them and also love them. I think they love each other, and there’s just so much pain and trauma and communication issues between them that it festers into something ugly. It looks like hate because those pains build until they explode.
I think for someone like Jiang Cheng, it’s so much easier to hate someone than to love them when it’s painful to do so.
It must have been so much easier to hate the man Wei Wuxian became – the Yiling Patriarch – than it was to remember who that person was, to him. We know that Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng are noted as being similar, and I think Jin Ling’s complicated feelings reflect this point. Jin Ling stabbed Wei Wuxian because of his parents being murdered, but also helped him and didn’t want to see him get hurt, because he came to like the man Wei Wuxian actually was rather than the big scary boogeyman. I think this happened in reverse for Jiang Cheng. Hate the boogeyman to forget the human you knew.
But, eventually, the truth comes out, and they can’t keep those things in anymore.
So to me, the Golden Core Transfer, from both ends, was them saying: ‘I want you to live.’ And how can that not be an act of love? Of devotion? We see Yanli’s protection of WWX as an act of love and sacrifice, but not this? Because their relationship cannot be easily described? Because Jiang Cheng is a hard man to work with, or even love? Because acknowledging this level of devotion might threaten the impact of wangxian? Sometimes, for better or worse, we know people who are hard to understand and hard to communicate with, but the love is there and it’s real. And for these two, I think even if the love could not outweigh the tension or the circumstances around them, they tried as best as they could. Because they both believed the other was worth it.
We know Wei Wuxian has more positive feelings overall towards Jiang Cheng, but it’s much harder to get into Jiang Cheng’s head because he’s not often the narrator. This is on purpose of course, but it also means we can miss intricate details.
That doesn’t mean it isn’t there though. And that doesn’t mean there’s no love.

Summary: Lan Wangji is aware that he is not the only one who is left haunted by constant bloodshed. Everyone has changed over the course of the Sunshot Campaign. However the one who underwent the most drastic change was undeniable. It's subtle- he's still friendly and boisterous with members of his sect. But he is not truly open anymore. Gone is the optimistic boy who radiated sincerity with every word. Instead he is replaced with a hollow imitation, with a smile cracked at the edges, and a laugh that is too hollow to fool anyone. Kay's comments: Sunshot Era Wangxian who are constantly at each other's throats has so much potential, especially if it escalates to them actually fighting and that ending up in a golden core reveal and this fic delivered on all of that and much more. The first half is incredibly dark and angsty, showing the reality of Lan Wangji's life in the war and the second half treats us to Wangxian first fighting and then slowly growing closer as the revelations hit. A really great story! Excerpt: Wei Ying grins, "Lan Zhan! Come, take a seat!" He shifts over on the log he had been sitting on, patting the empty space next to him. Briefly, Lan Wangji wonders how someone can have a smile so welcoming even whilst wearing robes stained with blood. He carefully seats himself beside Wei Ying, careful not to let his robes touch the mud. The slight contact of their shoulders brushing against each other puts him on edge; this is the closest he has physically been to the other man in a very long time. "Lan Zhan! What are you doing here? Don't tell me you missed me," Wei Ying teases. "I was walking nearby and I saw smoke. I thought there was trouble." He can't stop the frustration from seeping into his voice. I thought you were in danger. Wei Ying's smile falls, and he puts down the jar of wine he was cheerfully swinging just moments ago. "Ah, I didn't realize…" "Wei Ying, what were you thinking- starting a fire this close to enemy territory?" He is careful not to raise his voice- but it doesn't matter. The second the words leave his lips he realizes that they sound accusative, and he knows he's made a mistake. The other man's eyes flash red. "Fuck I forgot about the stupid rule okay? We were just trying to have fun." The other Jiang cultivators, even as drunk as they are- are beginning to look uncomfortable. They glance at each other uneasily, once, twice and ultimately walk away. Wisely, or perhaps rudely- they do not stick around to say goodbye to their senior.

Hello again. I wanted to ask a question. I don't think I asked you this before but I may have. Do you believe Wei Wuxian's cultivation pathed harmed him or was inherently harmful? I think Wei Wuxian had gone through trauma after trauma and was never given time after the war to heal. Then, with the whole Wen situation, he was pushed into a corner. I believe the resentful energy exacerbated his already shitty mental health but I don't think it caused it. Do you believe Wei Wuxian cultivation is harmful? Do you think it was the reason he lost control? Or do you think it was just trauma and unfortunate circumstances coming to a head?
Thank you for your time and efforts. I hope you are well and healthy.
Hello! I have already answered this question for others and written some other meta on this and adjacent topics before, but it's been a while, so I'll go ahead an answer this again.
Wei Wuxian's cultivation is only as harmful as any cultivation is. Qi deviation is a risk for any cultivator and while the Nie cultivation is much more risky, there is no form of cultivation that is entirely without risk. It does seem to require a certain amount of emotional stability, which makes sense when you're working with the negative energy out there in the world, but again, that's not entirely unique to his guidao.
I am a firm proponent in the everyone who went through the Sunshot Campaign has some level of PTSD theory, Wei Wuxian included and I very much agree that it definitely exacerbates what comes.
But really it's also the nature of making your own enemy, if you push and push and push and push and cut aside every option and force someone to be your villain, eventually they will snap, no matter how kind and good they are. It may not be permanent, it may be the sort of thing that they can recover from with good time and care and not being horribly persecuted by everyone around them, but very much there is a limit to how much anyone can take. Wei Wuxian reminds us twice in the story that even he cannot be a stone and he can be hurt by things. This is very important and relevant to what happens because really from 17-22, Wei Wuxian's life was a dumpster fire with a few bright times scattered here and there and the circumstances that led to him losing control at Qiongqiu Path were the culmination of literal years of the Jin Clan antagonizing him until eventually something broke, combined with incredibly powerful cultivation and a little PTSD. It's as simple as that.
It's very relevant that in the present day that Wei Wuxian never has a single moment where it's even hinted that his control over his cultivation is slipping no matter how much or in what circumstances he uses it. He goes through some pretty intense stuff through the course of the present day, including all the stuff in the Guayin Temple Hostage Party, but when it comes to his cultivation, he's fine and completely safe. The only things that challenge him are the things controlled by the Yinhufu and Nie Mingjue being on a murdered corpse murder spree and even then, neither of them negatively effect him, just make him have to adapt to what's going on differently. If his cultivation truly were that dangerous, then we would have seen something in the present day, or had some mention of it. But instead he and Lan Wangji carry on merrily with not a hint of concern no matter what's happening when there's guidao going around.
It's the twist of the novel really, Wei Wuxian was always right about his cultivation and the things that people either blamed on his character or his cultivation run much more differently than the popular narrative is willing to admit. CQL in particular really muddies the waters by both giving him health troubles in his first life and doing weird things with his guidao, but in the book itself, his cultivation is only as dangerous as any cultivation.
As a last note, resentful energy is dangerous, yes, but it's almost more of a metaphor at times for resentment of any kind being dangerous. Think about how many people were hurt and killed based on the resentment of men who wanted things they felt they deserved in some way. Think about how the three big antagonists (Xue Yang, Jiang Cheng, Jin Guangyao) all are characterized by the resentment that they bear proudly and take out on everyone around them.
Then think about what Wei Wuxian took from his mother, the words that he passes on to Lan Wangji at the end of the novel. "“My mom said you have to remember the things others do for you, not the things you do for others. Only when people don’t hold so much in their hearts would they finally feel free.”"
Resentful energy is dangerous. Resentment is dangerous. Wei Wuxian knows this, so he doesn't hold on to either, and thus he and the spirits trapped in resentment who listen to him, all fly free in the end.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 33 part two
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Side Note: As you know, I mostly except for sex scenes try not to compare CQL to its parent work, MDZS, because I think different works should get to be their own things. But I do love the book and all its many adaptations, and in case you want to dive into all of that, I’ve put together a roundup of everything I’m aware of (Novel, Donghua, Manhua, etc.) that’s available in English, and where to find them. That post is over here.
Tumblr media
Morning in Cloud Recesses
It’s morning, and by the time Wei Wuxian gets out of bed, Lan Wangji has already stretched, made breakfast, folded the laundry, and gone to play his guqin by the waterfall.
Wei Wuxian steps outside and takes a deep breath, happy to be staying in a place that doesn’t smell like lava or corpses.
Tumblr media
He wanders through the oddly empty cloud recesses, hallucinating about happier times. These are not normal flashbacks; he is in the frame, watching, while things happen in the past.
Tumblr media
Eh, that’s ok, he’s been through a lot. Hallucinations aren’t uncommon with PTSD.
At each memory, he smiles warmly, until the present day catches up and his mood crashes back down.
Tumblr media
This repeats until he reaches the library, where he remembers (in a normal desaturated flashback) showing porn to Lan Wangji and how mad he got. A bit of a smile stays with him after that.
Tumblr media
(more after the cut!)
Bunny Kisses
Then he finds the rabbits, two of whom cheer him up by smooching, like he wishes he and Lan Wangji would do.
Tumblr media
As a stand-in for a human kissing scene, this is cute, as long as we anthropomorphize them so that their sniffing of each others faces counts as kissing. It’s definitely better than watching those birds from The Long Ballad.
Tumblr media
(I adore The Long Ballad and have watched it three times so far, and that is three times more than I ever needed to see a bird’s tongue)
Return of the Bathing Beauty Trope
Then Wei Wuxian finds Lan Wangji in the cold spring. Let’s compare this encounter to the previous time they met each other here, so many years ago.
Then: Baby Wei Wuxian sees Lan Wangji and *sprints* down the stairs to be near him, even though they don’t really get along yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s completely delighted to see him, not at all deterred by the unfriendly reception.
Tumblr media
Now: Grown up Wei Wuxian reacts with with a fond smile, similar to the way he’s reacted to all the memories he’s been replaying.
Tumblr media
The smile fades, and he approaches with absolutely none of the exuberance of his youth.
Tumblr media
He just has...no joy. Not in living, not in being around Lan Wangji. But he’s sought him out as unerringly as he did in his youth, all the same.
Then: Baby Lan Wangji realizes Wei Wuxian is approaching, takes a millisecond to consider the situation, and immediately goes to put clothes on. He’s fully covered by the time Wei Wuxian reaches the shore.
Tumblr media
Now: Grown-up Lan Wangji sees Wei Wuxian, and just...sits there...while Wei Wuxian looks at him. He’s got his hair pulled over his shoulder so his back is on display, too.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji is never going to tell Wei Wuxian about his scars, but I think he wants him to see, to understand that Things Have Happened in his own life while Wei Wuxian was gone. Talking isn’t really his thing, so he’s showing him instead.
Tumblr media
(These unobtrusive scars, incidentally, are what happens when a character is extremely scarred but is being portrayed by a half-naked Wang Yibo. The producers aren’t going to give up a thirst opportunity for the sake of medical verisimilitude.)
I think he’s also deliberately letting Wei Wuxian see how beautiful he looks without his many layers of robes on. He sits still, being looked at, for 30 seconds of screen time, and then he turns around to show off his tiddies.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately that’s when Wei Wuxian notices the burn on his chest, which wasn’t what Lan Wangji was going for, so he--slowly--gets out and puts his clothes on.
Tumblr media
This burn scar is never discussed in the show, although the book explains it. I think if you haven’t read the book you can still guess that Lan Wangji did it to himself out of grief. This is a literal mark of Lan Wangji’s devotion--one he’s not ready for Wei Wuxian to understand just yet.
Continuing the comparison: in the past, it was Wei Wuxian trying to get close to Lan Wangji, as Lan Wangji resisted.
Tumblr media
In the present, Wei Wuxian doesn’t need to push; Lan Wangji comes to him. Lan Wangji has, in the course of 12 hours, invited Wei Wuxian so far into his life and has shown Wei Wuxian so much of himself that he might as well have embroidered "down to fuck" on the front of his robes.
Tumblr media
Before this, Wei Wuxian had never seen his house, not seen his hair without several chunks of silver in it, not heard him play guqin other than for medical purposes, and definitely hadn't been given a generous eyeful of his elegant torso and swanlike neck.
Seeing Lan Wangji’s various scars, Wei Wuxian starts to get out of his own head a bit, and begins to think about the person Lan Wangji has become in his absence.  He demands--not via his usual whining, but with quiet authority--to know what happened.
Tumblr media
This gets him absolutely nowhere, because Lan Wangji is the stubbornest person on Earth. He let Wei Wuxian look, and that’s all the communicating he plans to do on this subject.
Tumblr media
He knows perfectly well that he has an interfering older brother who will eventually explain everything for him.
Failmaster Qiren
The tension is broken by the arrival of some juniors, who say that Lan Qiren tried to communicate with the sword spirit, and it kicked his ass. This happens to him more often than it should.
There are a lot of funny moments in The Untamed, many of them deliberate, but some caused by the challenges of a big production with complicated continuity. For me, nothing will ever be funnier than the fact that, on his way to save his uncle from the homicidal sword spirit, Lan Wangji stopped to do his hair.
Tumblr media
Outside the sword room, Wei Wuxian demonstrates one of his core skills: busting through barriers in the Cloud Recesses.
Tumblr media
None of the juniors can get past this door that he’s easily blasting open, but they all still believe that this dude with Lan Wangji is second-rate cultivator Mo Xuanyu.
Flute Recital
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian start playing "Rest" to the sword, but then Wei Wuxian realizes that Lan Qiren is going to recognize him if he plays the flute well...while not wearing a mask...or something? This is one of those moments where it would make a lot more sense if Mo Xuanyu did not look like Wei Wuxian, but we would all be sad if either version of Wei Wuxian did not look like Xiao Zhan, so let’s roll with it.
Tumblr media
To hide his real abilities, and because he is a compulsive troll, Wei Wuxian launches into an extra-shitty rendition of WangXian, which is apparently bad enough to knock Lan Qiren out again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lan Wangji takes a moment to wonder why he had to be born a clownosexual, exclusively attracted to clowns. One clown in particular.
Tumblr media
Now the mystery-solving part of the story gets rolling. Wei Wuxian picks up the sword, which is smoking with resentment, to get a read on it.  It screams at him like the Xuanwu sword did, back in the good old days.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian shudders and gasps sexily, and then falls into Lan Wangji's waiting arms.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji suddenly feels totally fine about his clownosexuality.
Party in the Jingshi
Later, at the Jingshi, Wei Wuxian expertly twirls his flute just like that one Yiling Laozu guy was known for doing while Lan Wangji and several disciples tend to Lan Qiren.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji has put Lan Qiren in his own bed, the same bed Wei Wuxian was sleeping in 12 hours ago. I'd say Lan Wangji has the busiest bed in the Cloud Recesses, except that we all know that honor belongs to Lan Xichen.
The disciples gossip about the resentful energy, and one of them wonders aloud if the Yiling Laozu has taken over a new host body. That earns him a nearly lethal dose of stink-eye from Lan Wangji.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji finishes checking his uncle’s pulse and puts his hand down but does not tuck him in, because his uncle is not named Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
We get our first clue that Lan Wangji is actually Lan Sizhui's dad when he vaguely dismisses the whole group of disciples, but sends Lan Sizhui, specifically, to bed.
Tumblr media
Hot-grumpy-dad Lan Wangji is my favorite. We don’t see him in this mood a lot at this age, particularly not when he’s busy making googly eyes at Wei Wuxian. But his worry for Lan Qiren seems to have brought back a slice of his angsty, angry younger self. *sizzle noise*
Lan Sizhui tries to argue about bedtime and gets shut down, so he verbally acquiesces to what his dad told him to do. Then he fucks off and does what he wants to do instead. It’s nice to see that Lan Wangji has raised a normal teenager.
Tumblr media
Sizhui goes outside and chats with his other dad for a while. He doesn't know yet that this is his other dad, of course, just that his father has a new, cool boyfriend who can probably score much better weed than that crap Jingyi's always bragging about.
Wei Wuxian is a kind, serious authority figure in his conversations with Lan Sizhui; not silly or teasing as he is with Lan Jingyi.  He tells Sizhui him not to blame himself for what happened at the Mo manor, and compliments his learning and thought processes.
Tumblr media
I Trust You
In the morning, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji talk on the porch. Lan Qiren taking the only bed means they probably didn't have the fun night Lan Wangji had been hoping for. Also, while they are getting along well, Wei Wuxian isn't comfortable with him yet; he asks if Lan Wangji suspects him, when they talk about the haunted sword.
Lan Wangji takes the opportunity to tell him, emphatically, “Of course, I believe you.” This is the same “trust/believe” ( 信 ) that was hanging between them the previous evening, and Lan Wangji is taking steps to rectify the problem.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, Wei Wuxian is helplessly in love with Lan Wangji, and has a very forgiving nature, so they will get comfortable with each other very quickly. They work out that Xue Yang must have recreated the Yin tiger seal using his own piece of Yin Metal.
Guest Lecturer
Next, Lan Wangji gathers a roomful of disciples together to listen to Yiling Laozu’s lecture on the topic of resentful energy and this demonic sword. (Lan Qiren wakes up, feels a disturbance in the force, faints again).
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian also flirt in front of the whole class.  Features of this flirtation include Wei Wuxian doing this...thing with his flute and his mouth while he leans on Lan Wangji.
Tumblr media
This one time, at band camp...
Tumblr media
Theoretically, this move of Lan Wangji’s, where he steps away while Wei Wuxian is leaning on him, could be read as “doesn’t like to be touched.” Except grown-up Lan Wangji is happy to touch Wei Wuxian, and everyone’s faces say that this is Lan Wangji indulging in a moment of playfulness.
Tumblr media
Lan Jingyi is slightly horrified, but Lan Sizhui is practically ecstatic about this development. He and Wei Wuxian have a little nonverbal conversation in which Lan Sizhui gives him the opposite of a shovel talk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lan Sizhui is the president of the Let's Get Hanguang-Jun Laid club. Jingyi will join up soon.
On The Road Again
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian leave Gusu on a pair of horses that are never seen again; why does Wei Wuxian ride a donkey if they've got horses? *shrug.*
They go into Qinghe and walk through the market; Wei Wuxian lighthearted and interested in his surroundings in a way he hasn't been since he was young. Lan Wangji seems comfortable in the crowd; a contrast to his early travels.
Tumblr media
A vendor is selling Yiling Laozu merch. Wei Wuxian is offended by their ugliness, explaining that the Yiling Patriarch was one of the most beautiful men in the world, with many successful sponsorship deals.
Tumblr media
Just then Jin Ling shows up, because the cultivation world is like 3 city blocks wide and everyone lives on the same block. He attacks the vendor for daring to mention Wei Wuxian in public.
Tumblr media
This is my father’s font! I won’t put it down!
The stunt here involves the vendor getting yanked on a wire into a produce table, without knocking it over. One radish falls on the ground but the table doesn’t break into splinters and the air is not filled with flying veggies.
Tumblr media
If you are accustomed to American TV and movies, seeing someone hit a produce table or cart without destroying a massive quantity of produce is positively surreal.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian realizes that Jin Ling’s personality is an unfortunate combination of Jin Zixuan and Jiang Cheng. He decides that he should try to instill some of Jiang Yanli’s virtues in him. He puts his mask on and starts a conversation with Jin Ling.
Tumblr media
Enter Fairy, the fluffy adorable dog, who is an exemplar of Wei Wuxian's deep fear of dogs. Fairy is also is a catalyst for a sudden onset of broad comedic acting in our leading man. Wei Wuxian screams and runs away as Fairy slooowly chases him.

Todoroki Shouto’s Amateur Guide to Not Fucking Up The Timeline by anubisisms
All that Todoroki had wanted was milk. Nothing drastic, nothing dramatic, just milk.
Unfortunately, in his quest to get milk, he ended up running into one of the saltiest, most impulsive people this side of the globe. Who also just so happened to have a volatile time-travel quirk.
So yeah, he was fucked. Just slightly. Being punted randomly through time wasn't exactly how he'd wanted to spend his Saturday morning. At least the younger versions of his friends are cute.

"I got offers from two universities," Kageyama announces, pointing at his chest with his thumb. "I'm going to play volleyball at Keio this spring."
"You still have to pass an exam, even if it's an easy one," Takeda-sensei hurries to add, although he is beaming and bursting with pride at his fluffy little crow chick taking off to play volleyball at a university level.
"I'll pass," Kageyama says with the same kind of confidence he uses when he tells Hinata he'll get the toss to him. He looks straight at Hinata, and Hinata jerks and turns red, wondering if maybe Kageyama knew he was daydreaming about something as stupid as the way Kageyama talks to him during a game. But then Kageyama just points at him and says, "You'd better get in, too."
Hinata, stupid, naive, idiot that he is, grins wide and nods and says, "Yeah!"
He doesn't know what he's in for.

“Bo,” Meian said, “you should bring your boyfriend!”
“Yeah!” Bokuto agreed. It took several seconds for him to follow up with, “I mean, I would, except I don’t have a boyfriend?”
Or, two truths and a lie: 1) Contrary to popular belief, Bokuto Koutaro was not dating his best friend, Akaashi Keiji, 2) he promised to move on from Akaashi ages ago, so 3) it wasn't like he even wanted to date him anyways.

The Sculptor by Eleanor_Fenyx
(mature)
Wei Wuxian's ad appeared in the Sunday paper just two days ago:
Wanted: Subject to pose as reference for neoclassical academic commission. Tall-ish height and muscular physique helpful, but not necessary. 3 months’ pay at min. Enquire at Yiling Fine Arts Collective if interested.
And now, here in his studio on an otherwise normal Tuesday morning, stands the most stunning man Wei Wuxian has ever seen here to do as instructed - enquire.
-/-
"You’re definitely tall enough for what I’d like, but it’s a bit hard to tell your physique until you undress-“
“Undress?”
“Yes,” Wei Wuxian replies with a sinking heart - it had been a misunderstanding then, though how that actually happened he has no idea. In all of history hasn’t everyone known that artists need nude models? “That’s a requirement. Not all the time, I suppose, and definitely not right away…but a neoclassical piece means a nude or mostly-nude figure, Lan Wangji. I’ll need a nude model.”
“I…Yes, of course,” Lan Wangji prevaricates. He’s too well-disciplined to fidget, Wei Wuxian would guess, but it’s painfully clear that he wants to. “I understand.”

Shen Yuan of No Relation by Gemi
(mature)
There is a boy digging a hole.
There should be nothing special about him. He is one of many children digging holes, each and every one eager to get a spot on Cang Qiong Mountain. At a distance, there was black hair and shabby clothes.
Yue Qingyuan could not look away from him.
-
In a world where they are the same age, Shen Yuan is going to try his very best to become the best friend of his favorite protagonist and prevent the blackening of Luo Binghe! Only, there is a problem.
Shen Yuan looks way too much like the scum villain himself, Shen Qingqiu.

Shang Qinghua goes to take a self-indulgent peek at his baby protagonist son and gets a kick to the shrivelled heart for his troubles. He gave up on changing the story years ago! Yet he finds himself helping his protagonist son's adoptive mother anyway. Just this one change won't matter too much, right?
One little change leads to more. Shang Qinghua never meant to care, but he becomes invested in making sure that his new family survives the looming plot. With the changes to the world cascading around him, with his position as a traitor pulling him between his sect and a certain ice demon, and with the protagonist growing up so quickly, how is one displaced author meant to ensure that everything turns out all right?
A Pre-Canon to Canon Divergence story.
