I can't believe that I had to be told that Peter was trying to distract Miguel for Miles' escape. Peter trying to take a selfie with Miguel and Mayday, arguing with Jess over mentorship, even on the train he was trying to get Miguel to go easy on Miles. Only when Miguel was going ape shit on the Go-Home machine did Peter realize that talking Miguel down was NOT going to work.

Look at him, he had no idea that things would get this bad this quickly, and not only that, I think the reason Peter looks this worried/scared/shocked is because this has happened to him before, but he was in Miguel's position.

I don't expect you to know too much about Spider-Man lore, but Peter has let his anger get the best of him at times, almost leading him to do something he'd regret.

A good example would be his "Final" fight with Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, the night Gwen Stacy died (ASM 121-122).

The dude literally swore that he was going to kill him, and spends a good chunk of 122 going on a manhunt for the Goblin, and when he finds Norman (whos already planning to attack him again), he beats the ever loving shit out of him.

The only reason he stops is because he realizes (most likely moments before finishing Norman off) that he nearly let his anger and guilt consume him, just like it's consumed Miguel.

This isn't the only time Peter's anger and guilt consumed him, and this isn't even the worst he's had it. But if you want to know about that, look into the comics, the clone stuff was especially brutal for Peter.

The way I see it, Peter wants to do both, but knows the consequences of both trying to do both and what could happen if Miles "breaks canon". He was there when Miguel accidentally destroyed his alternate universe, but we also don't know the full story with that. I think that, like most Spider-People, Peter takes solace in being a part of the Spider-Society, it makes his failures feel less like his fault, and more like something he couldn't help. But he also feels like that isn't entirely true, that his failures are his own, and that he needs to take responsibility for them. This is kind of reflected in the short conversation that he has with Miles in the vents. "Bad things are gonna happen, it makes us who we are. But good things happen too, y'know?"

Peter has lived a life defined by loss and trauma, there's no skirting around that. I think the reason that Peter B. seemed to be on Miguel's side at first is because, on some level, he was running from that. He was willing to accept that sometimes people die, and due to the nature of canon events, that wasn't his fault. But when Miles comes along and challenges this way of thinking, Peter kind of gets a rude awakening. He realizes that he can't use canon events as an excuse to absolve himself of responsibility, and he sees what he can turn into if he allows that way of thinking to dictate his life choices.

I was thinking I'd probably see one of you! You're wrong :) Let's review the history a bit, shall we?

In this case, what we're talking about is the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, or in English, The Institute of Sexology. This Institute was founded and headed by a gay Jewish sexologist named Magnus Hirschfeld. It was founded in July of 1919 as the first sexology research clinic in the world, and was run as a private, non-profit clinic. Hirschfeld and the researchers who worked there would give out consultations, medical advice, and even treatments for free to their poorer clientele, as well as give thousands of lectures and build a unique library full of books on gender, sexuality, and eroticism. Of course, being a gay man, Hirschfeld focused a lot on the gay community and proving that homosexuality was natural and could not be "cured".

Hirschfeld was unique in his time because he believed that nobody's gender was either one or the other. Rather, he contended that everyone is a mixture of both male and female, with every individual having their own unique mix of traits.

This leads into the Institute's work with transgender patients. Hirschfeld was actually the one to coin the term "transsexual" in 1923, though this word didn't become popular phrasing until 30 years later when Harry Benjamin began expanding his research (I'll just be shortening it to trans for this brief overview.) For the Institute, their revolutionary work with gay men eventually began to attract other members of the LGBTA+, including of course trans people.

Contrary to what Anon says, sex reassignment surgery was first tested in 1912. It'd already being used on humans throughout Europe during the 1920's by the time a doctor at the Institute named Ludwig Levy-Lenz began performing it on patients in 1931. Hirschfeld was at first opposed, but he came around quickly because it lowered the rate of suicide among their trans patients. Not only was reassignment performed at the Institute, but both facial feminization and facial masculization surgery were also done.

The Institute employed some of these patients, gave them therapy to help with other issues, even gave some of the mentioned surgeries for free to this who could not afford it! They spoke out on their behalf to the public, even getting Berlin police to help them create "transvestite passes" to allow people to dress however they wanted without the threat of being arrested. They worked together to fight the law, including trying to strike down Paragraph 175, which made it illegal to be homosexual. The picture below is from their holiday party, Magnus Hirschfeld being the gentleman on the right with the fabulous mustache. Many of the other people in this photo are transgender.

There was always push back against the Institute, especially from conservatives who saw all of this as a bad thing. But conservatism can't stop progress without destroying it. They weren't willing to go that far for a good while. It all ended in March of 1933, when a new Chancellor was elected. The Nazis did not like homosexuals for several reasons. Chief among them, we break the boundaries of "normal" society. Shortly after the election, on May 6th, the book burnings began. The Jewish, gay, and obviously liberal Magnus Hirschfeld and his library of boundary-breaking literature was one of the very first targets. Thankfully, Hirschfeld was spared by virtue of being in Paris at the time (he would die in 1935, before the Nazis were able to invade France). His library wasn't so lucky.

This famous picture of the book burnings was taken after the Institute of Sexology had been raided. That's their books. Literature on so much about sexuality, eroticism, and gender, yes including their new work on trans people. This is the trans community's Alexandria. We're incredibly lucky that enough of it survived for Harry Benjamin and everyone who came after him was able to build on the Institute's work.

As the Holocaust went on, the homosexuals of Germany became a targeted group. This did include transgender people, no matter what you say. To deny this reality is Holocaust denial. JK Rowling and everyone else who tries to pretend like this isn't reality is participating in that evil. You're agreeing with the Nazis.

So usually when an imaginary friend is a real thing in a story, it’s either a demon or a ghost or some supernatural boogeyman that probably wants to eat the kid they’ve befriended (Mama, a couple of the Paranormal Activity movies), or “imaginary friends” are just treated as a real thing in the setting, and if a child just thinks hard enough they can manifest a friend into existence (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Happy).

And somewhere in the middle is an area where the imaginary friend in question is real and they are supernatural, but they aren’t malevolent, and they aren’t entirely honest about what they are. Like maybe they’re a fairy or a god or some kind of boggle from mythology, but they just got caught by a six year old and they don’t have time to get into it, so they just go “…Yes. I’m your imaginary friend. We haven’t met. How do you do.” And then they stick around because they do love this kid, and if you’re a boggle from mythology in the modern day good food is really hard to come by.

And at some level. That’s what I think Hobbes is.

sometimes while i think about that while a lot of adults did not treat me very well as a kid i also get a lot of 'in hindsight this person was so good to me and i didnt even realize it until now' as an adult. today i was thinking about how the first anime convention i ever went to was when i was 10 and i asked the man working the manga cafe what manga was/what a good place to start was (because the con was very overstimulating for me and i had gotten lost) and he asked how old i was before recommending yotsuba and asking if i wanted any water or something to eat. its really simple but theres a lot of bad things that couldve happened or he could've been careless in his recommendation, but instead yotsuba has remained one of my favorite manga for years, and probably a large portion of why i continue to read manga as an adult... i think adults who try to involve kids in the world safely/kindly even in little ways make so much more of a difference than they ever really know.
