Okay I’m like 99% sure I already talked about this but I didn’t get an answer so whatever. Where are Penelope’s vocals coming from in thunder bringer??? In the official animatic she floats down from the heavens and sings “I can take your suffering from you” (siren melody!) but why is she there??? Only Gods can have non-diegetic vocals, and Penelope does not have magic teleport/flying powers. I think there are three options for what’s going on here

Zeus is calling Penelope’s voice her to make the choice harder for Odysseus and also to be a jerk. Is in character for him, but I don’t think he knows/cares about what’s up with Odysseus enough to know what his wife sounds like, or to know the melody the sirens were singing

It’s that one siren who was impersonating Penelope originally. She got shot, but we don’t know whether or not she actually died and if she didn’t it would make sense she would want revenge on Odysseus. But also I don’t think she’d want it bad enough to follow them through Scylla’s lair, and she could just sing Odysseus off the ship if she did, she doesn’t gain anything from impersonating his wife again during this choice. This is the least likely option, she probably does when she got shot honestly

Odysseus is hallucinating his wife. This one makes the most sense to me, but it’s mainly because the others make no sense at all. He’s been through enough that I wouldn’t be surprised if he started hallucinating, but also it’s just kinda strange? Specifically the fact that she sings the siren melody. Odysseus had his ears plugged with beeswax, so he wouldn’t know what the siren sounded like, only the words she said, so he wouldn’t be able to recreate the melody (though I suppose this could be hand waved away with musical logic). The real thing that gets me here is that if Odysseus is the root of this song, why is it the siren melody? Does he not have a single memory of his real, not a fish lady trying to murder him, wife? That would defeat his entire motivation would it not? Do hallucinations even count as diegetic? Because they don’t actually EXIST in universe

I don’t know what going on anymore. I need other people thought on this because I have not stopped thinking about it
