to one of my most serious researchers I have ever done before, now, here’s a little explanation:

I wanted to make a fandom analysis using old posts, the way back machine, and other stuff to try to compare the once-ler fandom in its golden age and now, trying to suppose how it was and trying to see what happened there, but it would be later. Because I got a really interesting capture that I got while I was checking the Oncest tag in the wayback machine, and I got this:

Someone saying that they were the first ones to show the Oncest ship term.

I wanted to see if it was real and not a joke or something like that, so I copied the url of the tumblr and desired that the blog is still up, and I got it!!!

I explored their tumblr for a little while, and I noticed another thing, there’s a bunch of photos of the once-ler BEFORE the movie of the Lorax came out, this of course means that ye, there was some people who found the once-ler attractive and begun to share his pictures in tumblr (without any tag, if it wasn’t the help of this blog and some other ones, I probably couldn’t got them).

This makes a lot more sense than saying that the once-ler fandom was born after the came out of the movie I can say.

Those pictures belongs to all the Lorax trailers, in which ONLY appears the gray once-ler, not greedler. So we can say that the people who find him attractive in the beginning, the greedler was like a kind of “plot twist”

But the topic of the whole fandom will be for my another analysis, now let’s try to focus on Oncest.

2. Possible date of apparition

In my research, it seems that Oncest was born between 19th March, 2012, but where did I took this supposition?

Checking the dates between their first Oncest mentions (and also checking other old inactive once-ler’s blogs), there’s some important dates to make a highlight.

In this screenshot, someone responds that this pairing has a name, this is from March 22, 2012, so the ship already existed and had a name too, so let’s check out the other blogs and their archives.

The dates are between 19th and later, is this the origin of the ship?

Of course this is just a supposition, I had to see it at that time to prove it, but it’s not the case. All I can do is make suppositions.

3. Who was the original person who brought up with the Oncest idea?

This one was one of the most complicated things that you can try to research, we are talking about something that is 11 years old, so some pretty amount of information got lost with the time.

IT’S CALLED ONCEST BECAUSE I SAID SO! Lol but really…actually, I’m kinda the one who came up with the name in the first place… The pairing existed, but I think it was originally called twincest or something… But anyhow, in month one of the fandom, back when Sirsteeve made some of the first oncest fanart the fandom went CRAZY over the idea…and so did i. So I was sitting in my living room having a feels moment over this new OTP…but since the fandom didn’t really have a name for it, it made me think… It came to my mind that the fandom was somewhat dividing the once-ler into two seperate people of the same relation-oncie and greed-ler. To me, it sounded like incest. So I played around with that idea a bit in my head. And after saying incest repeatedly in my head I noticed the ‘ce’ in the word. I came to the conclusion to 'once’ in addition to the 'est’. thus 'oncest’. I had a fangasm and posted my idea to tumblr ASAP. Apparantly, it caught on cuz it’s still called oncest today and is widely known C: That has to be one of my greatest achievements in this fandom.

There's a small mention to someone named "Sirsteeve" who explains that were one of the firsts ones to draw Oncest.

I searched and their oldest Oncest post I found is this one.

Conclusion

Second part? who knows. But the only thing I can say is… this one was one of my most complicated things to find, but now I got some important information. I'm here for you to share my knowledge!

I must say, I’m very proud of me for this, you guys have no idea how excited I got when I found these photos and data, maybe is not too much but I think they’re really important yet; this information forms part of our fandom history, and I think we should keep that information up and don’t lose it.

As a reminder too, as I already said once…

Oncest is like an icon for our dear Once-ler Fandom, whether we like it or not.

We can’t deny its existence, we can’t blame it, we can’t try to delete it, it always will exist as always the fandom will exist and some people like it.

And… My opinion about Oncest?

Well, I don’t hate it, I don’t love it thou, but I can like some posts about it, I can appreciate art from this ship, and it’s idea too.

More emphasis on fanfiction than many others of the species, but the fanart interpretations of the original low resolution image played an integral part in his classification as a member of T. Sexyman

Loki (2011)

The only live action character I included in this list, this specimen demonstrates more T. Sexyman traits than its contemporaries

lacking a clear romantic relationship in cannon, fans felt free to remove him from the surrounding cast and put him in different scenarios

Onceler (2012)

Brought the concept of Sexyman to Tumblr and the wider internet’s conscience through unavoidable saturation of the blogging sphere and introducing novel ideas such as “self-cest”

Bill Cipher (2012)

In the field, I observed far more people dressed as the Sexyman version rather than following traditional approaches of cosplaying an object à la Tardis dress or cardboard recreation

Much smaller cultural footprint than the others but with a persistent passionate fanbase, one of few qualifying examples out of similarly cited entries like the Geico gecko and the man in the yellow hat that only exist to shock outside observers

The first autofill result when I went to google DHMIS because I did not remember his name was “human Tony”

Sans Undertale (2015)

The undeniable impact left by this specimen on the Tumblr ecosystem and the fact that the T. Sexyman evolution of this character also thrives on the wider internet alongside those that adapted to different social media ecosystems mark him as defining figure of the species.

It was actually quite difficult to find humanized fanart that fit the conventions of the time, but there is plenty of alternate universe self-cest characteristic of the species T. Sexyman

Hazbin Hotel (2019)

Due to the sometimes unpredictable process of T. Sexyman parasitization, this is one of the only examples of successful commercial cultivation of the species

Entering the Tumblr ecosystem during the decline of T. Sexyman populations, it still garnered a substantial fandom

Notes on Taxonomy

The following examples are characters frequently classified as Tumblr Sexymen that I believe lack certain defining features to positively identify them as specimens of T. Sexyman. However, there is debate on how broad the definition of Tumblr Sexymen should be, and there are some interpretations that could lead to the inclusion of these characters. For now, I have designated these individuals as an as yet unidentified member of the genus Tumblr, due to the notable impact of their presence on the platform during the same time period as the boom of the T. Sexyman population.

Severus Snape (1997-2007)

A classic example of the misunderstood loner archetype which has existed long before the proliferation of the Tumblr Sexyman

The majority of the fanwork does not separate him from his original context of the Harry Potter universe, and much shipping is done with other HP characters

Snape Wives (Snapeists), a group of women who formed a cult around the fictional character that they believed to be a deity who existed outside of and before the books, created a microclimate quite different from where T. Sexyman thrive, leading me to believe this particular specimen has made some evolutionary adaptations that set him apart from T. Sexyman

Supernatural (2005)

Rather than the type of transformative work characteristic of T. Sexyman, the vast majority of Supernatural’s presence on tumblr consisted of aggressive infection of unrelated posts with GIFs, spreading the fandom throughout the entire Tumblr ecosystem and occupying a different ecological niche

While fans certainly found the characters sexy, at the time, the main focus was shipping and not character specific fandom

Hannibal Lecter (2013)

The only thing that came close to the insanity of the Onceler fandom, there were endless iterations of Hannibal characters, most notably as every obscure character played by the same actors, and mythological creatures of every stripe

Hannibal Lecter fits nearly every T. Sexyman identification criteria except for one, He is inextricable from Will Graham, who is not a Tumblr Sexyman but a proto-poor little meow meow

The elusive Tumblr Sexywoman

The proliferation of T. Sexyman as a species was due to the overabundance of wild creation and consumption of transformative fan content, largely attributed to young women whose attention and energy were focused on sexy men. There are also fewer examples of chaotically evil female characters in popular media similar to the host characters that typically become T. Sexyman, though the ones who did fit the bill were popular among small sapphic circles like Doctor Olivia Octavius and Eda the Owl Lady. Notably, the most popular Sexywomen, or rather, the only ones who qualify as T. Sexywoman, are all MILFs, including Lady Dimitrescu who migrated from Twitter and immediately adapted to the new climate.

Branch evolutions of T. Sexyman

In the year 2022, wild populations of T. Sexyman are near extinct. Though many nostalgia blogs and meme pages have successful captive breeding programs, reintroduction has been largely unsuccessful due to changes in the Tumblr ecosystem. Descendants of T. Sexyman have now evolved to fill new ecological niches, with the most notable species being T. Normie, T. Meowmeow and T. Babygirl.

A Poor Little Meow Meow is a character that is pathetic, beaten down by their narrative and generally struggling who nevertheless continues on, not through some intrinsic optimism or determination, but because of a combination of pride, hubris and responsibilities outside their control.

Fans delight in their response to misfortune with a kind of detached, morbid curiosity whether watching their struggle elicits pity like one feels for a shivering wet chihuahua or an uncontrollable lust.

Fanwork often focuses on depicting their lowest points and creating new scenarios for them to suffer through for comedy as often as drama.

T. Meowmeow could be conventionally sexy if they were not who they are or in their situation, that fans prefer them as they are is a defining feature of the species

Unlike T. Sexyman, when T. Meowmeow are sexualized, fans tend to act out emotional conflicts through them rather than see them as an idealized romantic partner

While T. Meowmeow favor male hosts, it is much more gender neutral than T. Sexyman, this adaptability has allowed T. Meowmeow to survive and thrive outside of its native habitat.

Change in fan reception of long-established characters in the Tumblr ecosystem

Applied to characters that embody masculine ideals to a pathological degree, instead of hitting hypermasculinity, they circle around and come off with a queer slant

Beginning as an ironic movement, T. Babygirls have gained genuine fans whether those people had a connection to the source material beforehand or not

the sexyman polls: who should have won?

spamton g. spamton. loki laufeyson. megamind. what do these characters have in common? they, and 29 others, were a part of the 2022 tumblr sexyman poll and the 2023 rematch. if you frequent tumblr as much as i do, you are well aware of this poll. in said poll, tumblr users were instructed to choose their favourite of two presented sexymen. it proceeded like a sports bracket, where the winners of each round were then pitted against each other.

in the initial poll, the final two were sans undertale and reigen arataka from mob psycho 100. sans won this poll. he was also featured in the finals of the rematch, this time against cecil gershwin palmer of welcome to night vale. this time, cecil came out on top. i do understand why this was the case, but i personally believe that the results should have been different.

what is a tumblr sexyman?

to explain why i think so, we need to define a tumblr sexyman. a tumblr sexyman is defined as a male fictional character that becomes wildly popular on tumblr. they are often white, tall, skinny, well-dressed, and either morally grey or just plain evil. sometimes not all of the traits apply, but i believe that the best sexymen are the ones who meet the criteria for each.

let’s look at our sexymen and see if they meet these standards. reigen is white, and so is sans in a literal sense. in my research i have not found anything about cecil’s race, as he does not have a concrete physical appearance, so i cannot confirm whether he is white or not. however, the wtnv fandom wiki states that he is neither tall nor short. sans also remarkably squat, and reigen, while relatively tall, lacks the characteristic lankiness. sans does not wear the typical sexyman clothes, though reign does. because cecil is not a physical being, it is unknown whether he dresses the way a tumblr sexyman seems to. as far as i know, neither sans nor cecil are anywhere close to evil, though reigen seems at least questionable.

all three of these characters are easily identifiable as sexymen by definition. however, there is another piece of criteria i want to discuss: popularity.

sans is iconic. even people who have never played undertale, such as myself, know who he is. alongside his theme song, “megalovania”, sans is an icon both in and out of tumblr. i cannot say the same about reigen or cecil. i hadn’t even heard of reigen before the polls, and before cecil won i was unaware of his sexyman status. out of the three, i believe that sans the most deserving of the win.

there is one character, though, that i believe to be a better option than all three of the aforementioned options. a character who meets and surpasses the expectations of what a sexyman is. a character who defined the sexyman characteristics as a whole. a character whose name strikes fear into the hearts of those who were on tumblr in its golden age.

the onceler.

why the onceler?

for the uninitiated, the onceler is one of the main characters of the 2012 film adaptation of dr. seuss's the lorax. when the film came out, thousands of teenagers latched onto him, and he became one of the first ever sexymen. he is often used as a model to compare other sexymen to, as i am doing now. in fact, the onceler is more than just a sexyman; he is also the face of an ancient piece of tumblr history: the onceler fandom.

i was not around for the onceler fandom days, but i know far more than i likely should. essentially, the onceler’s fanbase wanted to ship him with a man, a common tradition of tumblrinas. an issue arose from this, however: there were no men to ship him with. this did not deter the fangirls, though. they essentially split him into two people. one of them was simply called “the onceler”, and he was the kind and innocent persona shown by the character at the beginning of the film. the other one was known as “the greedler”, representing the greedy side of him. the fandom made countless pieces of fanart and fanfiction the two of them being romantically and sexually involved. eventually, this evolved into multiple “onceler-sonas”, who were essentially just ocs whose names ended in “ler” and partially resembled the original character.

the fandom died out after a while, but the onceler lives on in the memories of thousands. there are few tumblr users who can hear the opening notes of “how bad can i be” without feelings a shiver down their spine. the onceler is an icon of tumblr’s prime.

and yet, he didn’t even make it to the finals.

why didn’t he win?

the onceler was, of course, a part of the sexyman poll. he made it into the semifinals both times, but he had been up against sans.  sans is what i like to call “onceler lite”. he has many of the onceler’s qualities, even being a part of aus in which he was shipped with different versions of him.

sans is a more well-known character by most people, and there are many who weren’t there to witness the terrible glory of the onceler fandom. sans, though, has persisted as a popular character over the seven or so years since his debut in undertale. if you don’t know the importance of the onceler to tumblr’s past, then you would be more likely to vote for him instead.

conclusion

i can’t change the results of the poll, and i can’t deny that the winners didn’t deserve their places. both sans and cecil were good choices for winning. the poll seemed like more of a question of “who’s your favourite sexyman?” and less of a question of “who is the quintessential tumblr sexyman?” if the results had been up to me, though, i would have chosen the onceler to win in a landslide.

I get the onceler craze is kinda over now but whatever! Everyone always talked about how hot the onceler was when he was young (rightfully so!) But I hardly ever saw posts about like. How much of a dilf the older onceler is???? Like come onnn do you see how sexy he is. Like come on he aged sooo well. Fine wine, who? Like. Ughhh he's literally so perfect and hot in every age the animators had to of known what they were doing he really is the ideal man. My ovaries literally can barely handle how fucking hot he is please I will never find a man so perfect. At the end of the movie when he finally comes out of hiding those first few moments of when he steps out are so sweet. We see someone who's been overrun with guilt over his actions of the past few years finally come to terms with what he did and helping to fix it. Then we see the onceler and the lorax embrace (God I wish I were the lorax) and its so cute and its so much shipping fuel yall refuse to acknowledge. But anyway Old!Onceler is just as hot as Young!Onceler but you don't wanna talk about it.

In 2012, the Lorax movie came out and the Onceler became the first "Tumblr Sexyman." The concept was still new and the internet was not quite ready for such a thing. There were horrible self-cest fan artworks and things so terrifying it scared Ed Helms himself. But we progressed.

2 (-ish I'm rounding) years later, Gravity Falls. Everyone had a huge crush on Bill Cipher, the megalomaniacal triangular antagonist of the show. All of this made him into the second sexyman. Again, loads of fan art. Some good, some bad, and some very, very ugly. But Bill Cipher made his way into the sexymen club.

Of course, we can't forget the release of Undertale, bringing about the creation of Sans and his AUs. They all brought what you'd expect from a sexyman, usually incredibly good art with bad intentions or ships behind it. Nothing surprising. All part of the pattern of sexymen as Undertale released 2-ish years after Gravity Falls.

Alastor of Hazbin Hotel (2019. Late as far as the pattern goes, since that's about 3 years after Undertale/Sans becoming a sexyman). No surprise. Bringing us back to our roots of tall, slender, and possibly (but absolutely canonically in Alastor's case) aroace dudes. Alastor is closer to the conventionally attractive male form, similar to the Onceler, but very unlike Bill and Sans as they are both short and not hardly human shaped.

So with all of this information presented, what conclusion am I trying to lead you to?

Ladies, gentlemen, and everything in between and outside of, based on past patterns, I concluded months ago that we in 2021 would be receiving a new sexyman. But who it is may surprise you.

People have said it's Raymond from Animal Crossing or Espresso Cookie from Cookie Run Kingdom, but I suspect it is none other than Spamton G. Spamton of Deltarune chapter 2.

Allow me to explain.

Every Tumblr sexyman has had at least one song. The Onceler had "How Bad Can I Be?" Bill Cipher had "It's Gonna Get Weird," (albeit the song never made it into the show) Sans has "sans." "Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans," and of course "Megalovania." Alastor does have a song too, but I couldn't find the actual name of it since he gets cut off by Sir Pentious and his fighting in the terf wars. Spamton also has recognizable songs like "Spamton," "NOW'S YOURE CHANCE TO BE A ," "BIG SHOT," and more.

If you look at these two pictures, they have some parallels. Both have themes of money, fitting as both characters are salesmen. Both have toothy smiles, fitting for Spamton, as he's a puppet and can't do much else. Both have lots of green going along with the money theme.

why did you choose your url?

this...was supposed to be a short explanation but it turned into quite a tale so strap in i guess because we are going on a ride. back in 2017 i was just getting into musical theatre rp and i was still feeling too shy to really talk to anyone ooc so i would just wait for people i wanted to interact with to post starter calls so i could just do things in character with them the easy way. So i did this with my friend cam, who posted a starter for me using a lyric from If I Could Tell Her. she linked the song so i could listen to it, so i did and i went ‘wait a minute, is that Ben Platt from Pitch Perfect?? (and other things too, but i only recognized his voice at the time bc of the acappella girl movies)’ and yes it certainly was.

i had zero idea what the plot of Dear Evan Hansen was about at that point, and for some reason based off Just That One Song and the poster art of who i assumed was Some Guy in a Polo Shirt i started to think it was about some jock guy who broke his arm and had an emo/goth friend who had either died or gone missing under mysterious circumstances. also i intuited that Evan had a crush on his friend’s sister but he couldn’t tell her that directly or his emo friend would kick his ass. so i was like mostly wrong, but a little bit right.

oh and i knew jared and alana were characters from the show bc cam said that they were i think?? but i had no idea what their role was. so after listening to if i could tell her, i listened to good for you and all i really got out of that was that evan the apparently not-jock guy had done...something... that really hurt jared and alana. and at that point i finally decided to go look up a plot synopsis and i found out i was waaay off base. but honestly this is why cast recordings should include scene dialogue in the songs bc otherwise you just get soundtracks like dear evan hansen where the songs have like. zero context. we really just go from waving through a window to for forever to sincerely me without like. any reason as to what is happening huh. It’s honestly not a surprise anymore that all those people on twitter had no idea the plot isn’t about gay teenagers.

anyways. cam was writing jared and she made a post at one point about wishing somebody would write alana and i was like ‘oh i could do that!’ (after i had actually Seen a bootleg and finally knew what the whole story was, of course) so i made a multimuse rp blog featuring alana beck, nabulungi hatimbi, chloe valentine and some other characters, and cam started sharing her headcanons with me that alana is trans, jared and alana were close friends when they were little kids but they sort of drifted apart as they got older and their priorities in life changed, jared was the first person alana came out to when she realized she’s trans, etc.

one night i started talking about wanting to pick a more theatre-relevant url for my blog and trans-[character name] urls were getting pretty popular, and at least 3 of the friends i made through rp had changed theirs to coordinating trans-[character name] and i think it was cam suggested i should make mine be trans-alana so i did. eventually i realized the unhyphenated version was available so i changed it to transalana with no hyphen and i have lived here ever since. sometimes i think about changing it but i feel like transalana has become a part of My Brand and i am not so great with coming up with cool names for things.

in theory, i have sideblogs... i don’t really use them, but of the ones i do have, there is:

emsbookblog - this was supposed to be where i would post excerpts of the book that i’m working on, but i think i did that maybe one time roughly 2 years ago and then promptly forgot about it/got nervous about my writing and was scared to share anything else. the rest of the stuff that is there is assorted writing tips. i don’t really know what to do with it now. i probably should post all my little thoughts about em and anita and caleb there instead of infodumping on my main from time to time, but if i do that then i have to promo a sideblog and direct people over to it which is always annoying to me when i could just do it on this blog which is much easier

dearnovelhansen - this is basically no longer used, but was a sideblog i made specifically to talk/complain about the novel adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen which was about 3 years ago?? maybe? i can’t be trusted to understand the passage of time. but to summarize: i thought it was an honor just to have the story be made more accessible since many of us couldn’t see the stage performance, but i hated a lot of the creative liberties that were taken. my main grumbles are that everyone who isn’t evan or connor is done so dirty in the novel. connor’s still kind of done dirty in the book, but not as much as like. heidi, alana, jared, and zoe are.

horseisle3 - this one was meant to be a place where i could just enthusiastically post screenshots from hi3, but instead it turned into a blog where i occasionally reblog other players’ hi3 content and bitch about how bad the game admins are bc hi3 is the tumblr famous (infamous?) homophobic horse game. the game where it was once okay to call your club store the gulag bc according to their head of hr, ‘it’s just a russian word for prison’ but you can’t say ‘im gay’ without somebody accusing you of corrupting young children who play the game. unfortunately there aren’t very many good interactive horse games out there, so this one is still about as good as it gets. it’s either that or star stable and i don’t care about star stable.

mlaenie - i’ve had this url saved for i don’t even know how long. way way way back in the day when i wanted to escape from the clutches of the onceler fandom i abandoned my first blog where i basically had an alter ego i guess?? and i decided to just be myself on the new blog. i don’t fully remember who came up with it, but one of my sister’s mutuals suggested that if you scrambled the letters in your name you could come up with aesthetic-looking urls. so lauren’s url became lrauen, and to match with her mine became mlaenie, which i abandoned on tumblr after about a year or so? but have continued to use as my main username on twitter, reddit, youtube, xbox, steam, and discord. i barely ever use any of these accounts aside from twitter, steam, and xbox, but yeah. so i’ve decided to try and turn this empty sideblog into a place for video game thoughts maybe. we’ll see how long it lasts this time around.

Random post here, I just wanted to talk about this, because it’s something that really hold my attention, see. Do you remember the Oncest? of course you do if you are in, you were in, or you know The Once-ler fandom, and if it’s not the case, maybe you had seen these fanarts before.

As someone who hasn't been in The Once-ler fandom in its golden age (I've only been here for a few months now). I notice that definitely the Oncest doesn’t have a very good reputation, I think it never had a good reputation (?) but anyway. My point is, is very noticeable the REALLY HUGE REJECTION that this ship has today, I just saw an amount of people that actually like this ship, the other hand, there's these people who really doesn’t like this ship, and seems that they doesn’t want to bring this ship back in any other wise, seriously!

So I'm gonna make this example:

I understand why a lot of people in the fandom used to like this ship, first, because was it was the most popular, so people took it and begun to like it, and second, it was like the only existent ship, yeah, Normaler exists too, but it wasn’t and isn't the most popular ship, let's say it, it was probably : 'or you were team Oncest, or you were team Oncest!' so people who was an artist for example, to get more notes or adapt themselves in the fandom, they begun to draw Oncest. As I said before, it was the most popular ship in the fandom (and is still, we like it or not).

Oncest itself was born as a… desperate? way to ship The Once-ler with someone else, because let’s remember this, of course The Once-ler fandom, was only focused on The Once-ler, that’s why his name is the name of the fandom too (obviously, there was exceptions of people that were Interested in all The Lorax stuff too and not only The Once-ler, but the point itself was The Once-ler for mostly the majority).

Today I see inside the fandom that a lot of new Oncelings that doesn’t want to be related with this ship just for being in the fandom, making a totally no worries comments about ‘hating on the Oncest’

Other ones can even throw hate on people who actually likes this ship, and you know, that’s… that’s just bad, it doesn’t even need to be clarified.

A lot of them doesn’t like it because they are seeing it bizarre, other people maybe because the ship itself is very… unfriendly with sfw stuff, if you know what do I mean (c’mon, it’s true that this ship as A LOT of nsfw stuff, let’s say it) other people seeing it in both ways.

Conclusion.

This ship doesn’t have a normal point, or you love it or you hate it.

And… look guys, we shouldn’t care about if someone likes Oncest or not, that’s not our business and are their likes and dislikes. Whatever, if it doesn’t hurt real people, then there’s nothing wrong with that.

I ship Victorian era idiots, I have no pearls to clutch. Go you, Onceler fandom, you created so hard and so mightily you left a permanent mark on fandom, and it’s a fascinating one!

That having been said I used to watch the 70s animated Lorax at least twice a week and revisiting it as an adult deepens rather than cheapens the experience so Universal can suck a fuck they misused these rights on every Seuss book they bastardized and they know it

My stance/opinion on Emmet x Rex (Remmex)

Ahh Remmex, the Marmite of the Lego fandom. By that I mean you either love it with all your heart and soul, or wish it would burn in a dumpster fire in heck.

I’d been meaning to make a post on my own thoughts on the ship for a while now, so here it is! Please bear in mind while you read it that this is completely my opinion, so please take what I have to say with a pinch of salt, whether you be a Remmex lover or hater.

Without further ado *takes a deep breath* here we go...

At the start, I really liked Remmex. I thought it was a plausible and sweet ship, and started looking for fanworks of it immediately. Then, I came across it.

Vestcest.

The ‘affectionate’ fandom nickname for the Emmet x Rex ship.

It made me laugh out loud. Really. I thought it was a joke, so I laughed.

But then, when I saw people tagging works as vestc- nope. I can’t say it again once is bad enough

When I saw people tagging non-meme works under that name, I got increasingly more 😕😕😕.

The “cest” particle is I think what makes me, and I’m sure many others, uncomfortable. So yeah, I avoid that name like the plague. It also brought back some disturbing memories of when the Vocaloid community was more active in like 2011 and there was Lencest as far as the eye could see (if you’ve never seen it before, don’t look it up. Just don’t. He is FOURTEEN YEARS OF AGE, INTERNET.)

Selfshipping just really gets a bad rep, and for good reason I believe, it can make people understandably uncomfortable. An example I’ve heard of in passing, but never really looked into, is some kind of selfshipping with The Onceler from the Lorax that also gave the Internet mixed feelings. I feel like Emmet x Rex wouldn’t be half as controversial as it is if they weren’t the same person.

But going back to the less unholy ship name Remmex, I did really like the ship a lot!

That was until my horizons were broadened slightly by all sorts of other interpretations of their relationship, such as people portraying them as brothers (on that note GO FOLLOW VESTBROS THEY’RE SO SWEET), which I thought was really lovely!

So for a while I just didn’t really have an opinion. I was cool either way, I suppose.

But I’ve sort of come to a final opinion here, that I’d like to share it in case anyone feels the same way I do.

In my opinion, I view them as having a very affectionate friendship. I feel like people often forget that close friendships with no romance involved can exist, and an example is in me and my own close friend. We hug often, share our insecurities and shower each other in compliments, all in a completely platonic sense (we have our own separate romantic relationships anyway, but that’s besides the point.)

So I picture them as having that kind of close friendship. I think they’d care for and support each other as if they were brothers, but not necessarily explicitly refer to one another as such I guess.

But that being said, I do occasionally enjoy posts depicting them in a slightly more romantic light. Hugging, blushing in each other’s presence, holding hands even, that’s ok! I like it!!

What I don’t like, and here’s the part some might disagree with me on, is them being portrayed in a sexual/steamy/you-get-the-idea kind of relationship.

I’ve just never enjoyed NSFW content personally, I don’t find it funny or cool, it’s just not for me.

That being said, if you do create works or think of Remmex in a relationship of that sort, I want you to know that that’s perfectly fine! If it’s what makes you happy and if you’re not hurting anyone, then I think it’s ok!

I feel like often it’s assumed with ships that there’s always going to be a sexual aspect to them. That’s not always the case, in real relationships and in fictional relationships.

I think what’s good about the majority of Remmex posts is they can be interpreted however you like, and it’s so good to see that there’s different people with different stances on the ship who create works for people who view them romantically, platonically, fraternally, or anything in-between!

As long as we don’t harass other people for their different viewpoints, then everything will be awesome :)

As for me myself, if I rb anything tagged as Remmex, it’s probably just because I love these two boys together and separate with my whole entire heart and it’ll never be anything suggestive/blatantly NSFW. And if I tag one of my own posts with Remmex, it’ll be because I think perhaps people who do enjoy the ship could perceive what I’ve written or drawn as romantic, but I’ll also always tag any slightly-Remmex-suggesting posts with “vest friends” because god, it’s a terrible pun but it makes me smile so much, and I want to show that it can be viewed in any way you guys want! I want to make you all as happy as I can, after all ^^
