Do you have any thoughts on what Henry would think if he heard about Ronan's ecoterrorism spree/Declan's everything while on the sarchengsey road trip

i have MANY thoughts on this since i think about it a lot, but every time i start i get really angry because it genuinely is absurd to not have updates from the Human Battery, Very Involved Magic Black Market Participant, and Resurrected Dream Forest during the course of TD3. so i'll divide my thoughts into what i want and what is likely. i realise in hindsight that i answered thoughts AFTER he returns but, same diff (i do think he/everyone else HAS to be super unconnected and iphone-less during the road trip, just to keep up my sanity).

i want Henry to be absolutely furious at best, disgusted at worst. i think declan's thing is more reasonable for him to be upset at, both because of their family's connection at the markets and also because hey dude what the hell how did you not receive a single consequence from shooting up an entire ecosystem of allegorical gang violence?! white privilege at its finest. but i also want him to rip ronan a new one because like. you've seen this guy's father and brother go to insane lengths to keep him safe and he's just being so unbelievably stupid and also undoubtedly harming so many innocent workers/individuals in such a strange campaign its like duuuuude. why not patent an oil-eating amoeba to combat pollution instead of continuing to do the hardest and most useless route. again, in my head I think Henry being resentful/hateful toward Dreamers + admitting aloud that it's a shame i wasn't here to aid the moderators adds something VERY VERY interesting to the dynamics at play because of how one-degree-of-separation he is to several dreamers, esp considering bc he'd still be civil despite it. but yeah declan gets scolded like a child and ronan gets the worst stinkeye on the planet and declan has to just pay off niall's debt in pure cash now, which, good luck!

what is more likely to happen with Henry's thoughts IF margie ever writes it: Absolutely Nothing. at best he's going to have a 3 second passing thought about how "edgy" and "cool" ronan was for "sticking it to the man" (henry is The Man, fiscally speaking, margie has forgotten that ronan is also a millionaire somehow) . with declan henry probably says "i heard! that's so fire and caucasian of you, mister lynch. skibidi!" and then they never talk about it again

That comment was so true, I was just thinking the same way. Old bylers were more open to criticizing the show's bad aspects and writing choices instead od trying to bend the whole thing to come up with excuses and explanations. Nowadays when you criticize a writing choice or something done by the Duffers you automatically get accused as if you've just committed a crime because how dare you think the Duffers aren't perfect genius writers that put everything intentionally without any mistake.

yeah! nowadays, in this corner, criticism is seen as a bad thing that you would never do to something you enjoy, and it's like... huh? it's okay to not enjoy something 100%. the duffers and co are not infallible and people don't have to like every decision they've ever made. that shouldn't even be something that someone on the internet has to say—existing as a human being in the world should've taught everyone that back when they were a baby.

even beyond that, as others have mentioned in other conversations, you can understand someone else's viewpoint just fine and still not feel as though there's enough relevant evidence to back it up, and feel hesitant because of how the duffers have consistently handled other plots.

like, personally... i struggle to be one of those #believers, because of how present the show's racism is in my mind. also, season three and season four are right there, alongside the show's misogyny and classism, too. and don't forget the little inconsistencies and anachronisms either! there's A Lot that i don't like and that i feel could've been corrected or reworked more effectively had they had a more diverse writing room or consulted others during the writing process. i like the general direction of the show, but there are a lot of details or ways they went about it where i'm like ://// man..

and.... controversial perhaps... but i feel that behavior is especially rampant in the byIer fandom and it manifests as the fanon that we can't seem to shake off.

mike does pay acute attention to will in some ways, but he's not the obvious lovesick, clingy, forever doting, golden retriever bf that people make him out to be [shout out to s2 mike tho he was built different 💔]. that fanon!mike is fans overcompensating for canon mike's behavior and presentation, which honestly has not been that fucking great as of late, purposely because he can't balance having both will and el in his life, among other mike-specific reasons, and because the duffers changed the way they wrote him post-s2. he does care about and love will, but not like many fans suggest, at least not yet.

but if you say that around here, you're seen as a freak weirdo mike hater talking about some ooc mike even though the show is right there and i could point to the 9384038049 times that mike forgot about will, brushed him off, was mean to him, or explicitly chose someone else over him. purposely! of his own volition!

and it also shows in how they babygirlified him, even though mike doesn't act like or look like that at all in the show, nor has he ever been described that way by anyone, whether in-universe or by the people that bring him to life.

And Don't Even Get Me Started On Will. Zon't.........

they had to recreate these new characters with mike and will's names and faces, because they didn't like what was on the screen. simple as that. but will they ever admit it? lmao.

as a fan of the show, and a fan of these characters and the stories they're representing, it's really weird to witness. there has been a distinct shift in the way in-fandom bylers talk about byler and the show and it started post-s2 when things started happening that they felt they had to correct. if they want to engage with the material in a way that best suits their tastes, fine. whatever. literally everyone does that. but to insist that the things that they say that go directly against canon or don't even exist within it .... are canon? and that everyone else using direct lines from the text are the ones projecting or twisting it or otherwise not appreciating the material? i have to laugh.

it's the same with other serious criticisms. if they can't create something to justify it, then they just brush you off as a hater because that's easier than acknowledging that maybe their precious bloated ensemble show isn't entirely perfect.

okay not story related but. how do the horses work

so! horses are an important part of this game. to quote my best friend and the biggest horse + horsegame fan i know (gabe @porthavens):

it's not a true "horse sim", in that taking care of horses isnt a major gameplay mechanic with significant impacts. but there are MANY different kinds of horses with different stat levels, and you can tame wild horses OR buy horses from stables, and you can pet+feed+clean your horse, and you can form a bond with your horse by earning their trust. IMPORTANT Is that you can also name them and style their mane/tail differently.

now forgive me as i go into more detail because im allergic to simple answers:

what he said honestly got the basics i think. you feed your horse food or give it medicine to heal it/help it replenish energy, brush it to keep it clean, you have the choice of bringing hay to them at camp, you can use them to hunt or as transportation. etc. in general theyre really useful!! theyre well implemented in the game and thats important imo considering the time period its set in + who the main characters are.

(and thats not even touching how theres like. honestly so much detail put into each breed having a distinct body type + the coat colors and tail dynamics like theyre honestly just so well animated. and horses are notoriously difficult to animate. but they feel real, down to how their coats ripple)

i feel like RDR2 especially handles the horse as not only a mechanic or a vehicle for the player but also like... as a way of furthering characterization + humanizing the characters.

each of the main characters in the gang have their own horse that stays with them, or doesnt, throughout the game. its apart of their personality + identity. something important to know is that in the genre of westerns theres a visual motif with white hats, black hats, and similarly with black horses + white horses. it usually is as cut and dry as "bad buy wears black + has black horse, good guy has white hat and horse" and we dont have time to unpack that but it DOES mean that when we are introduced to certain characters its important to look at whats close to their identity and see

dutch van der linde, the leader, + father figure to the main characters, as long as an antagonist, has a black hat, but the most unique white horse. on the contrast, micah bell, the true antagonist of rdr2, has a black horse and white hat.

^ horse and hat spiel aside its about how each character is talked about in relation to their horse. dutch's horse, the count, looks more like an aristocrats pet. baylock, micah's horse, looks starved and bleeding later on in the game. john and arthur can talk to their horses and hum on horseback and call them petnames. each horse has a personality that informs the characters story yk.

lastly its like...... you do grow attached to your horses that You get. i had a grullo dun mustang named merlin (yk. arthur and merlin. arthur gets compared to the legend by jack his nephew) and i adored her. i also watched her die as arthur thanked her. its like. its about how the horses are more than a game mechanic but also more than just a narrative device. perfect blend

Finished Song of Achilles and looked up your review. Fantastic write up. Hit on a lot of things I'd also felt including how Achilles somehow continues to feel close to us as the audience. It's frustrating but also kind of neat from my feeling sometimes that Patroclus is a bit selfish in his telling. He tells so much and yet seems to keep the core of Achilles possessively to himself.

I think one of the places this is most jarring for me though is when he goes from the Achilles that Odysseus comments may be too soft for war to the one we see by the end (seemingly unbothered by death not the honor stuff). It's not that it doesn't make perfect sense, it's just that I felt like I didn't actually watch the transformation. I suppose now I write it I'm reminded how little he actually saw most as individuals even as a boy so perhaps it was less of a transition anyway. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ You're why I ultimately decided to absolutely put it on my reading list so wanted to follow up a little. I did absolutely love it. I'm sad to be done reading it XD I'm glad you encouraged me to read it after I finished Circe 🧡

I'm so glad you liked it! Ultimately, i think I liked it a lot more than Circe, which doesn't surprise me as many of the things I love are already present in the base story. It's still a book I think is really fantastic and worth the read, and for those of y'all who love to read ~*queer*~ fiction, it is explicitly kiss on the lips homosexual kind of gay.

#Doc do you not like stories tht are under the umbrella or what?#not at all I love a good sad gay story dearly #but whenever I get hit with a 'queer stories!' rec it is almost always some middlin fantasy thing where a bunch of characters #fit into the QUILTBAG #and have dopey happy endings after gayly crying at each other #and that's...the point of the rec #so when someone's like 'it's a queer--' BUT IS IT GOOD??? is always my response #Plenty of people are perfectly happy to read stock stories with bad prose but someones trans or gay or etc #and I genuinely think that is their right!#but its not me and a lot of my relationship with that series of rec is p negative #coming out the gate with saying a book is a piece of identity fiction feels like asking one to forgive its faults #so i would never rec this as a queer book I would rec it as a GOOD FUCKING BOOK but #my experience is not universal but this is some Sarah Waters overlap between the two #Its gay and its good

It's is especially at one in the morning that you realise how ridiculous "I shouldn't go take dancing classes even though I desperately need a hobby that would let me fix the issue of me being so ridiculously short of breath that they genuinely worried about my health because, well, i can't dance." actually sounds. My brother in Christ you're supposed to learn how to do that there.

#apparently I have the same lung volume as someone with copd according to the tests #i don't have copd though I don't think so at least #too healthy for that #sigh there's some classmates of mine who dance I could ask them where they do it but....hmm thats always more embarrassing #when there's people you know so mean #I'd have no issue teaching tht myself but problem one is learning wrong technique can in a lot of things result in health problems #and problem too is that you can't really do stuff you need two people for alone #i don't even wanna /dance/ you know I just think knowing the standard stuff would be nice #i can walz kind of #as said you don't really get good when your partner is a blanket #but I can so the leading position in a standard waltz #ahh and I don't know if that would work out anyways I graduate next year would it even make sense to start something new now #but I really do need a hobby thats not. nothing actually I have video games but I consider those a hobby i just play them in my free time #to relax you know #it's not like I'm actually doing anything much #i mean I am #but I don't know if I'd call it a hobby #reading also isn't really a hobby to me I read in the evenings before bed i don't think thats already hobby status #and drawing lost hobby status when I picked the art major now it's something productive #but I don't want to do like. actually hard sport or anything in that direction i don't want to take up swimming again for example #i just want to do something with myself i guess #but this is all hypothetical anyways for now i better worry about my theoretical tomorrow and pray i know the question #please don't let me fuck this up #delete later

I'm debating trying to run a character week for Leaf from April 22-28 so it falls on Earth Day, but I don't think anyone would care 😭 Nobody likes her...in a game where the protagonists are just avatars, how do you flop as a character so bad and even when you're finally canonized, to be so meh to people they decide her and Green just *have* to be different characters, 100% same design, role in the trio, bag, and battle pose just colors inverted who? Featured merch with Squirtle, Gengar, and Clefable who? LGPE Red looks different from FRLG Red too, that's just how updated graphics for Gen 1 designs go. You'd think that would mean the fandom would care about just the LGPE interpretation but there's nothing for Green either lmao. So instead I'm here to tick off as many people as possible who go looking for Reguri fics and Dad Lance and Silver specific content by straight up refusing to write Leaf as a bubbly airhead, a girlboss wingwomen, or literally any other way I disliked regarding women in fic...though, it wouldn't be false advertisement to begin with.
