you know, i never thought of making my own comic to my clangen cats.

i do have my own little clangen story that i keep track of and draw for, but never thought to do a comic for it. im debating whether or not to do one for the one i already have (which is already a solid 50+ moons in, already have character designs and such) or to start a new one (arguably, more flexible in terms of story)

either way your art had <333 inspired me a lot abt this

HERO. i love anon-names LASKDN AS FOR YOUR QUESTIONS- ok the first isn't a question but your thought- I THINKKKKK if i were you i'd start anew bc it's refreshing and funkyfresh and flexible. FOR ME, it's easier on my brain to just dive into something like this running on adrenaline and excitement (bc clangen already has 'script' you'll follow to some degree.. unlike most comics u gotta plan and work the plot out for in a lot larger of a scope). but do what feels right bc ultimately that's the Right thing to do creatively AND THEN YOUR QUESTION- i keep my moons in a google doc! i have a big header 'MOON 5' (and.. all the others) and then i have screenshots of the important text pasted below it. be it little cat thoughts when you click their sprites, or 'relationships', or events. THAT SAIIID you should definitely write notes about major things out, bc.. you can't ctrl-f and find specific things without scrolling through a buncha moons and reading it all over again. and after a while that's so hard if there's a lotta moons in that doc so put like.. 'CATSTAR LOSES 1ST LIFE'. 'Kittenpaw is killed' in and under those moons. ALSO DON'T FORGET TO KEEP TRACK OF THE SEASONS. you go to draw it and realize u don't even know what time of year it took place. enraging Annndddd.. i also save images of the sprites at every life stage. but i just keep those in the directory they go to automatically. and there's probably a better way to do that lastly, i love southern Lyrestar HC. I don't have a solid update schedule. Earlier on I was updating every few days, then I've kind of settled on the goal to do one chapter a week.

What happens is after i post one chapter, I go a day or two not thinking abt it all to let my brain refresh for a bit. Then I check my email for any new comments, to vibe the reception and what people liked most.

I would spend the next few days just thinking about what I want to specifically include in the chapter re: dialogue, descriptors, and details. The hardest for me is trying to remember all the different foreshadowing and breadcrumbs I sprinkle in the chapters to see whether or not I should bring it up again in case people forget, or whether it's time for me to sprinkle in a new detail that would be plot-significant later on.

Then when I set aside time, I write it all in one day/night and then publish it. Throughout that week I do sometimes pull open the doc and type something if I don't want to forget it but that's it!!

It might get a bit slower later on because I have a licensure board examination for my undergraduate degree! I am also entering my second year of law school, which will keep me busy!

I'm planning on publishing chapter 9 in a few days and then letting you guys know that I'll need to focus on doing my boards and getting into the law school grind again for about two weeks before I'll publish ch10!

Hoping you guys can understand hehe ch9 is also really long and heavy so hopefully it keeps you satiated for the wait!

📚 Do you read your own fic?

I try to not feel embarrassed that the answer is yeah bc like I think if other ppl reread their own work it would make sense!!!! Like I would not judge at all and honestly co-sign rereading ur own shit. I literally tell ppl that the reason I write is bc like. It’s basically the chance to craft your own perfectly tailored special interest to share with others. So like. Why wouldn’t I like it? (And this was especially true when I was trying to write original stuff which is why it’s so frustrating I never finish anything. But also a little true now too. This whole weird cloneverse was the product of my dumb thought experiment “what if the clones were people who had the capacity to be just as tragic as Jace). It’s got everything I like in it. I try to tell myself anyway. In practice it’s like. Argh.I kinda go through periods where I like. And this is usually after I JUST posted. Wanna do other things but end up distracting myself by rereading the thing I just made over and over. And then I forget it exists and often in my mind it’s like. Oh I don’t wanna read that i think bc I have residual feelings of like. Idk embarrassment I guess? Like I convince myself it’s old and probably bad but sometimes when I’m glancing at old things I write for. Refresher purposes (usually on cloneverse lol) I end up getting suckered back into rereading it like oh hey is this actually. Good?

Anything older I mostly haven’t looked at in a while bc idk. I’m very hard on my old self. I did reread my Reddie sky high au thing and went. Hm this is actually fun I like this. Most of my IT stuff is like. Ok I think? This is kinda related but I JUST got a comment on a talent swap I wrote for DR and I literally haven’t updated the thing since 2018 and I feel so bad for abandoning it but. Part of it is bc I think if I were to come back to it I would wanna redo some of the old chapters and I feel so pained looking at the early chapters. I keep telling myself I’ll get to it. My Mukuro and Hiro proxy sibling agenda deserves it, they deserve to be best friends so bad, I’m sad I abandoned them. 

💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?

This is such a funny question bc I’m such a goddamn blabbermouth so I feel pretty confident that I’ve already posted so much cringe abt the headcanons for cloneverse. Like. Technically J3’s personality started as a headcanon in that i was like “oh, Porter was flirting with J3 the entire time he was falling in love with J2”. 99% of the time if i feel compelled to say it i will just say it? Actually you know what? I just thought of one that might be kinda schmaltzy and i feel bad for not saying its a 100% certainty but in my heart Ankarna grants all the clones some form of true life but it would probably be some fucked genie deal where its like there’s a reincarnation au or something. Like they have to find each other again or something. Very Hadestown Orphydice anybody got a match coded. Genuinely b/c J4 wishes she was never Of Jace she gets what she wants and its like good/bad. Bc i can never stop putting the clones in the torment nexus I don’t know if that’s completely stupid

👖 Are you a planner, plantser, or pantser? Is it consistent?

I try so hard to be a planner bc I’m so frustrated by my pantser process. Like. Idk i tend to just ride momentum but without foresight you end up going in directions that can be kinda formless and completely wrong and idk. I have such hard time finishing things b/c of this i think. But when I try to plan I’m also so bad at it i don’t think I’ve ever finished a real and true outline before I start. I want to be the kind of person that has clean outlines but. Idk. So by default I guess I’m a plantser bc I do have docs full of notes but my notes are always super messy and like. Idk what I’m doing evolves so much while I work that half the time the notes end up not even accurate to what I’m aiming for. Worst of both worlds life

In my world the operator and slenderman are two separate entities. The operators goal is simply to cause madness. It feeds on fear and anger so it only wants to invoke such emotions. The slenderman wants control over the humans and to study them as a whole because it finds them fascinating. It will try to mimic the behaviours of those it watches. In my lore they are similar in design. The operator has a tree like texture to its skin and is much taller than the slenderman. While the slenderman has indents in its face area to sort of mimic where eyes and a mouth would go. They are of the same species but because of their different goals, they evolved differently with how they affect those around them. I could keep going but I think this is more than enough of a ramble. I'm gonna start signing off with something since I keep dropping lore to you, if that's okay. -🎃 or 🍂 (whichever you prefer)

Tips for someone closeted abt their disabilities? Asking for a friend

hiiii !!! love you, i hope you are doing fine!

hmmm, THAT IS A COMPLICATED TOPIC YEAH... you can only mask so many of your struggles and a lot of it depends on the relationship you have with others and the enviroment you are in. i am not sure i can help, but i will ramble for a bit, okay!!

generally speaking:

1. keep in mind you do not need to tell someone. and if you can deal with it, especially if you are in a stressful risky enviroment where telling people could have repercussions on you, sometimes it can be beneficial to remain hidden. your identity really decides what you can and cant do in society 2. what also factors into this is whether you have a professional diagnosis. i am Very pro self diagnosis but unfortunately not everyone is and professional/school/uni enviroments just straight up dont really care. being taken seriously is always a huge struggle, no matter the disability/chronic illness. 3. seeing how your health is on the line, its usually good to be honest and upfront about it, since it can really help!!! its still definitely worth it, may that be to ask for accomodations, clear up confusion, or just to get it off your chest. its freeing!!

from my own experience, here is what i found:

i am always as upfront and unapologetic about it as possible. this is difficult and it takes practice but it is worth it. i feel like the more confident you appear, the more people are likely to instinctively take you seriously. + it always sets a sign to yourself and others to not treat the topic with any shame!!

people can be ignorant on accident, when they dont understand smth. so instead of describing what your disability does, i find it helpful to tell others how it affects your life and, if necessary, what they can do to help you/create a safer enviroment for you.

i think its generally good to start out by using easy terms and categories other people will instantly recognize before getting into the details. to be relatable, as the kids say and love to be. depends on the situation though. (like, for example, i have narcolepsy. no one knows what that is but if i tell people its a neurological disorder, that includes seizures and excessive exhaustion and tiredness, they instantly get a vague idea.)

be prepared to provide whatever the other end may accept as "proof". this is upsetting and it sucks. but you have to expect it unfortunately, even in casual enviroments. if you dont have anything official, a clear definition of how disability affects your life can help get the serious nature of the situation across.

you will find yourself explaining your disability over and over and over, so lay out a "battle plan" in your head that contains the most important information (symptoms, how it affects your daily life, which kinds of aid you need with it) it gets tedious but private people will often just.... forget. we all have our own lives and disability is usually unfortunately not a topic on peoples minds. (we can change that however >:))) )

this one sucks but. take care of yourself and be prepared to treat yourself better than the people who may push your away bc of this. i have ended many relationships with friends and family because they treated me terribly in relation to my disability. there are always people who will love and understand you.

if you know someone who already knows and supports you, it can help to have them be present. just as backup you know. and even if thats unnecessary, as emotional support.

as for any sort of school or work enviroment: gotta bite the bitter pill and just hand a docs diagnosis letter to people and ask for what you need. in relation to this, look up what sort of benefits/accomodations you can receive in your country and hand info on that in alongside the diagnosis. sometimes theres also local social services who can provide accessible info on this. you gotta be direct and demanding about it or no one will do anything, in my experience.

this got kind of lengthy, so i hope some of it is helpful somehow?!??! aaaaaaa

also, everything depends on the kind of disability ofc and the specific stigma related to it. my personal issue is people keep hitting me with the "wow i wish i could sleep as much as you do" (bruh,... my days are like 10h long. with maybe 4h i can "work" in. permanently) so i always try to lead the conversation in a way that wont give others a chance to attack me in predictable ways o|<

its genuinely super hard but necessary and sometimes extremely good for you to be open about your disability. the world wasnt made with us in mind but with more information and social acceptance, it can be. never let others get you down!!! youre strong as hell!!

And the note about her feeling comforted by the fact that she has Mabel and Dipper's contacts!!! SOBBING!!!! Imagine a scene where she has another nightmare and the only thing that can calm her down is hearing Mabel and Dipper's voice on the other line WAAAAAAAAAAAGH IM INSANE!!!! AND the fact that the twins Understand all of this. They Know how horrible it all is. They're all just kids trying to navigate their way through this trauma. And realizing that it's so much easier to deal with them together. I'm going to combust. Another wip for funsies (and that u don't know abt ;3 ) is one I'll be doing for Honkai Star Rail! 12. Q: a trope you’re really into right now A: Oh man SO MANY but I think right now,,,,, big emotional outbursts? I'm always a big fan of characters who just stuff so much of their emotions into a jar and eventually letting it all out in a huge impactful moment (NOT PROJECTING AT ALL HAHAHA) and changes their relationship with the people around them forever because of that. MWAH!!! CHEF'S KISS!!! I just adore big emotional moments in general (its literally 90% of what I write lmao) and maybe a big part of that is bc I have ADHD and feel many things in very extreme ways and seeing characters feel the same way I do is comforting haha

Q: talk about your writing and editing process A: Oh boy it sure is a Process Okay so generally I get the idea kicked into my face after listening to a certain song, watching a certain scene, or looking at fanart. It's rare that I don't have ideas for fanfics bc I just have them jumbling around in my head all the time. I usually record down any major ideas I have in my google docs or notes app, (sometimes write down a specific line or scene that is super vivid in my mind) and then when I'm hyperfixating on a certain show/character/idea I can always go back to it and add to it! I also browse through my ideas and wips whenever I feel like making something creative but don't know what project specifically. I also listen to lots of music when developing an idea since it helps for inspiration!!! When the stars align and I have the right motivation and energy for a project I usually will latch onto it until it's finished or until I get a considerate amount of it done. I'm usually Crazy Glued to the project for HOURS and it's almost impossible for me to stop lol After that, I usually take a break from the project (sometimes a few hours, sometimes a whole day) and come back to it later to reread it and see what I want to change or add. My editing process is not usually very intensive or long since I get tired of it quickly but sometimes what I'll do is revise it once then come back to it a few weeks or months later with a clear mind and see what I want to change. And the good thing is that by then my writing skills will have improved so the later passes look much better. Also I usually send them to you so that I can tell they're coherent and I'm not going crazy LOL My editing process can also be much shorter and sometimes if I'm really happy with what I wrote or want to post it immediately, I'll just revise it once or twice right after I finish the fic. That's how it turned out with And I try my best, to prove that nothing's out to get you. which was nice!!! Especially since it was more of a quick writing practice. I also find that sometimes I just need to let the text be and not overedit it where it looses the original impact and tone I was going for.

So I figure that means this could fall under a 'bad habit' in a particular way.)

I'm trying to work on p much all of these, to varying degrees of success. But I also know that like. No one is really 100 percent free of bad habits? So some of these might get better but stick around in some sense thru my life, and others might be replaced by different bad habits. I figure trying is better than nothing in the end (I really need to work on the gifts one tho, I'm just barely getting some on time for a friend's upcoming bday and even tho they should be right on time I feel really bad abt it fadkdjkds)

That and klay is the most recent victim of mitchsogyny which is when uber-entitled fans of a team with a Best Guy Ever want to kick said Guy's work wife off of the only one he's ever known because of (1) bad playoff performance that somehow overshadows several good ones !! Men are watching sports for the wrong reasons just enjoy the gay love story and be grateful ugh !!! Ok sorry for ranting ive just been thinking abt both of them a lot and luv ur blog and need them all to stay married forever or i will do something Drastic etc ok that's all bye have a lovely day <333

oh my god anon... your mind... i had never connected those two dots but yes absolutely!! as always i am prone to rambling so i'm sticking the rest of my reply under the cut.

i think you nailed it re: how despite the different trajectory each pairing has taken (years of coming close but not close enough vs literal dynastic success) the enduring love is still there!

i also think the way these two pairings came to be is interesting to compare. auston and mitch written in the stars (auston shattering the glass of the rink off a mitch assist in their first practice together, fast friends since they were rookies etc) vs steph and klay having a slower burn and only really bonding a couple years in (the barcelona trip).

and then, like. auston and mitch sitting in the locker room together, united in their grief and heartbreak in the amazon doc... the effervescent joy that klay and steph take in succeeding together but also watching each other succeed, even all these years later!! both pairs always speaking highly of one another, understanding that they make each other better, and most importantly wanting to climb the metaphorical mountain together. and needing each other in order to do so.

less important but amusing to me: one half getting married and settling down (steph, mitch) and the other still (presumably) happily living that bachelor life (klay, auston)

have to take a quick second to highlight this part of your ask because it made me feel so weepy in wake of Recent Events (which i will circle back to):

LIKE.... LET'S TALK ABOUT IT FOR REAL... steph is a generational talent, an all time great, changed the way the game is played etc etc BUT. everything he has won at an nba level has been with klay by his side. the warriors were a lottery team for two seasons, everyone said they'd never win again in the 1130 era... and then klay came back and they won again! when steph was out last season, klay played a huge part in keeping the time afloat! i repeat that through the power of true love all things are possible and i think that's beautiful.

and of course, klay as the most recent victim of mitchsogyny is just incredible scholarship, truly. i've been avoiding all warriors-related news/spaces this offseason because people are being so fucking miserable, it's painful to see.

like, with the faction of leafs fans who want mitch gone, i can almost understand why they feel that way (note: that doesn't mean i approve or agree lol). and that's because in the same way that winning cures all, losing poisons everything.

but with warriors fans and klay, it's like? was four championships and coming back from two potentially career-ending injuries not enough for you people? did you guys forget a decade plus of incredible performances that quickly? where is your sense of loyalty! <- this circles back to your point abt how the average sportsfan engages with team sports. they care about the logo, the team as a concept, and maybeee one or two superstar players. but for me personally, and i think for many people on sports tumblr, what good is rooting for a team if the team is completely unrecognizable? i don't want to see nameless players win a title, i want to watch my guys win! i want to get invested in their journeys and their accomplishments and watch them grow together! sports are just stories about people at the end of the day!

please don't apologize anon, i too have been in the trenches with the news that klay is likely to leave as a FA and just... everything... about the mitch situation. i think the most important thing to remember is that no matter what happens, the love will always be there. and when we look back, their names will always be said together.

hello miss jewel! was wondering what your writing process is like (if you get asked this alot sorry!!!! i was just curious 😄)

omg no i don’t get asked this a lot idt!!! uhhhh okay i’m gonna try and make this make as much sense to not-me as possible and i apologize it got long!! answer under the cut

BRAINSTORMING STAGE.

my ideas come from random stuff tbh; a random au, a dialogue line, a song (big inspo from songs tbh) but before i start outlining or anything i just open up either a note on my phone or a google doc and just write down ideas for the fic as they come to me! sometimes if i need more ideas for some reason, i’ll scroll through prompt blogs and see if those spark anything for me!

OUTLINING STAGE.

when i think i have enough to start outlining, i do my lil paper slip method where i write out each scene idea on little paper slips and cut up like 10-ish other slips of paper and leave those blank. then i put the slips in the order i want the scenes to happen in and the blank slips are for new ideas or filler scenes to go between other scenes!! then i take a picture of the layout and type everything up!! my outlines do go crazy like i get really into it dfjkgsdjk

WRITING STAGE.

okay this can go a couple of ways :O i’ll either write in order (which is very rare and i usually only do this when i don’t want the fic to be too long) or in a random order where i pick random scenes via a wheel picker or picking slips out of a jar or smth to write (i do this one very often) or in a certain order where i pick what scenes i want to write first (usually easier, shorter, or more exciting scenes) and make an order that has nothing to do with the order of the fic, OR (last one sorry) i’ll do a mix of the last two, so random and certain order where i go in by what i want to write and if i can’t choose what to write, i pick randomly!! sometimes i’ll write out just dialogue in a script like format, like this:

person A: hey watch this *does an action*

person B, doing another action: hey that’s pretty cool

and then flesh it out but i only really do that if i have a lot of little ideas that aren’t, like, a whole scene !! usually i just go right for it and start writing dfjkgsdhjk

EDITING STAGE.

before i send it to a friend (which i usually do) for beta reading, i read the whole fic over and look for plot inconsistencies, plot holes, grammar inconsistencies and typos, or just general things i could add to the fic. if the fic is really long, like i had with pussy fiend, i read it through once without touching the fic (minus grammar/typos) and make notes on a separate page of what to edit then i’ll go back in and read it again and make the edits! then i’ll read it again and then i’ll send it to a friend!! once they read it, i go in and read their suggestions and make my lil changes!!

FORMATTING/POSTING STAGE.

then i paste it into the tumblr post editor! i add my banner pic(s) and my lil splitters/dividers and format the beginning info like the member/pairing, genre, contents, etc. (i try to keep a running list while writing of the contents, namely the smut contents/warnings, so i’m not scrambling to remember everything, but sometimes i forget tbh)

THEN I POST IT AND SCREAM IN RELIEF AND HAVE A DANCE PARTY AND THEN START THINKING ABT MY NEXT FIC BC I’M A WORKAHOLIC WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING.

I have never done one of these so here goes:

2. Usually, one day is a writing day and one day is a reading day. Writing’s all-consuming for me, so I probably end up writing more than I read, but I’ve cleared entire tags before by pure accident.

3. Gosh, any fic that I really like or emotionally effects me really pushes me into that mood. Things will spur me into action and remind me that, hey! Maybe I should be writing! Fic in generally really gets me, y’know?

4. FUCK- HEY WAIT- I have a favorite fic/few fics picked out for every single fandom I’ve ever written for, and then some. It’s INSANELY difficult to pick for some fandoms, mostly Sonic and Danganronpa, so here’s a couple that are my undisputed favorites from the fandoms they’re from! ‘Untouchable’ by pollutedstar, ‘Amaranthus’ by Archadian_Skies, and ‘All’s Fair in Love and War’ by AEpixie7.

11. Very rarely do I put actual thought into them. I’ll plunk a line from the middle of the story into the title box and call it a day, unless I previously had some sort of wild, insane moment of clarity and had a good idea for a title.

15. AW THAT’S SO NICE- my personal favorite is actually my least read fic, The Corn and His Deer. It’s based off of an eight-minute clip from The October Monologues done by the Faceless Old Woman in Welcome to Night Vale, and I wrote the whole thing on one plane ride. I had to type in the character tag manually. I adore it, that one was all for me.

27. I like to try! I’ll tag stuff, of course, and in my longer works, I really do need to get better about marking which chapters are upsetting or sexual. I mark the sexual ones well, but sometimes I forget that something I was completely neutral about when I wrote it could upset someone. Certain stuff ALWAYS gets tagged, though, as long as I remember I put it in there. People are always welcome to ask me to tag something or to point out that I forgot a wanting, and I’ll definitely fix it!

30. I’d like to let you know that I started working on this at way too early of an hour where I am, and for this bullet, I just put down ‘No! Ratio!’ I have a couple fics I could do this for, but this is the one I know will be finished soon-ish. So. Anyway. Here’s the bit!

Calmly, carefully, Stone got back into the car, drove to the nearby lake, and hurled his phone into it as hard as he possibly could.

He stopped. Waited. Realized that it was both waterproof and essential, unique tech, tech that was now sitting at the bottom of Green Hills’ most possible lake. It could wash up onshore at any time.

Thirty minutes later, he dragged himself out of the lake, phone in hand, and climbed back into the car. By two in the morning, Stone finally collapsed into bed, still soaked and reeking of lake water. (Some stuff cut for plot reasons don’t worry about it)

Two hours after that, his alarm went off. He really needed to make better choices on his sleeping habits, he decided, or at least the habits that included jumping into a lake and having to rush a shower before he resumed his old life for the first time in 250 days.

32. I promise you that I tried; it led to me staring blankly at my AO3 page for twenty minutes. So! In exchange, I can tell you my three favorite (posted) scenes I’ve written even though that changes with the wind, which would be the hypothermia scene from Total Apathy, the epilogue from Proximal Development, and the scene of Mondo and Taka watching trial 3 in Everybody Wants to Rule the World.

44. Okay, so I’m American, right? That’s probably pretty obvious, I’ve written a marching band AU, for god’s sake, but why is Google docs so insistent on keeping me in my lane? Sometimes, British English has better spellings. When I write a word like ‘traveling’ and spell it with the British spelling, two L’s, who cares? Why is that any of their business? Grey is clearly the superior spelling between grey and gray! Those convey two different things! I’ll spell ‘color’ like ‘colourgh’ for all I care! Language is fake and we made it up for notes! Also, Times New Roman sure is a font, so is Arial, but I think everybody deserves to have a fun little font to write in, even if it’s effectively the same as those, specifically to have a favorite font. It adds character.

hi dear!! oh my gosh not rude or bothersome at all lmao i'm more than happy to talk abt it! (i'm gonna put it below the cut tho cause it's a long boi)

ya so basically i have a personal discord which tbh i use for a LOT of stuff (beyond just fic planning) and i honestly can't recommend it enough??? generally apart from fic specific stuff i use it as a cache for links to art i really like or share often, random thoughts on genshin lore or other things, poetry, gift ideas for ppl in my life, to-do lists, cosplay concepts when i was more into cos, etc lmao

as for fic planning specifically!! the vast majority of my thoughts fall into a 'other projects' channel, which is my catchall for oneshot ideas, vague fic concepts, quotes, etc. fics end up with their own specific channel usually if they're longfic/chaptered or if i end up with just an overwhelming amount of ideas/thoughts about them lmao

one actually good diverse example of a channel i had was for chosen (x) where i had a TON of reference images for various zhongli imagery and symbols & i detailed out a lot of the thoughts i had on where those images should be carved on childe. i had a variety of scene ideas laid out although not all of them had a ton of detail, and i had dialogue snippets that i really wanted to use. i also wrote in a lot of the lore to make sure i had a coherent place to reference or adjust if needed, including some stuff that really didn't make it into the fic itself but needed to make sense in the background so that i could pull on it as required. notes as well for things i wanted to be sure to mention, cause they were relevant to the story but didn't come up right away or were part of the foreshadowing or i thought they needed clarifying somewhere.

i'm sure there are ways to be more efficient or organized about a fic, but this works well for me since i have discord on my phone and it's far less effort to pop into a channel and write some stuff down rather than navigate gdocs and look for a planning doc and make notes there. PLUS i only ever had planning docs usually for a fic i knew would be chaptered/long from the start, and didn't really have anywhere to put short ideas or random thoughts lmao

basically, here's my writing category in discord:

although looking at this i could probably hide the kathb fic channel now that i'm done writing it lmao (i usually hide channels when the fic is finished, just so i don't overcrowd anything but don't lose stuff either lmao)

notes in these channels can manifest in a lot of ways but USUALLY it's dialogue or scene ideas that come to me when i'm busy with other stuff and i want to put down, or when it's something that won't happen for a while but idw forget (i am very forgetful). or just generally when i sit up at 3am with the perfect string of prose for a scene and i have to write it down RIGHT NOW or i'll lose it. this happens often enough that i keep my phone on my other projects discord channel when i go to bed so that if i do indeed wake up with an idea, i can just unlock my phone and start typing lmao

occasionally, i have actual research on certain things in those channels, or a timeline if things start to get messy (if you followed me in my bnha days, i had a channel for my fantasy dabihawks au that spiraled into a whole series and i really needed a coherent timeline for that) but for the most part it's scene and dialogue ideas! oh, and sometimes if there's art or smth that inspired the idea, i'll toss it in there too so i can reference it or be sure that i link to it when i post the fic. ah, and sometimes it's just stuff like this with minimal context lmao

one of the bigger things for me that works really well is my other projects channel tho? that allows me to string stuff together and pin ideas and reply to other messages so i know what the heck i'm referring to when i just slap a line of dialogue or smth in there lmao. cause it used to be super hard for me to feel like a fic was gonna warrant its own planning gdoc, and something about putting a ton of notes directly into the fic doc below where i'm writing just never worked all that well for me lmao

it also serves as a great place for me to dump ideas and refer back to them easily, or expand upon them without having an actual fic doc somewhere? like, i have ideas i haven't actually started writing but i've added lots of notes and thoughts and stuff for, so it's great to have that somewhere easily accessible and searchable and all in one spot lmao

i'd say if ur standard modus operandi has been scattered notes everywhere, this is a huge upgrade in terms of being able to not only keep everything in one place but separate it out in an efficient way (you could probably get more efficient than i am, too, like having a category for specific ships/fandoms or even for a specific fic with channels for more specific purposes like research or dialogue or character notes, etc) - like, the whole thing is searchable, too, so if you misplace something or can't find it, you can still search for it in one single location. overall, cannot rec enough lmao

hi!!! firstly i just want to say i LOVE ICOS with my whole being. i read it for the first time in high school abt 5 years ago and read it again over quarantine last summer and it drew me in and wrapped me up wholly, i couldn’t put it down. i love the story and characters so much.

i also love writing very much and have always written small stories, fan fiction etc., the past couple weeks i’ve felt inspired to write fiction of my own, a novel of sorts with my own original plot and characters, and i wanted to ask you for some advice/ words of wisdom.

how did you plan out the characters you wrote? or did you more just let them write themselves? and did you plan out chapter by chapter how the plot would unfold before writing, or again let it happen as you wrote it? i’ve found it easier for me personally to let things happen as i write, and that the characters do things and say things i never planned for, was wondering if you felt the same or if you were more organized lol.

also what platform did you use to write on?

We kind of did a bit of a hybrid.... I really wish I had the original bulletpoint list for what the book was originally going to be, but "Sonny" and I had opposite ways of looking at things. "He" would delete things as we went, and I would squirrel it all away until later lol So "he" deleted a bunch of bulletpoints/early info as we went because neither of us actually expected anything to come of any of it, so I also wasn't super anal about keeping track of things way early on. I might still have some documents buried somewhere with info but offhand I don't know where.

Anyway so I kind of am more like you in the way you write, but I will sometimes make the effort to try to plan a bit, especially if there's a cowriter. For ICoS for example, we had a rough outline planned of what was going to be the story, we started writing, we let the characters/plot/etc go where it needed to go, that meant things we hadn't planned from the start came in. The original story was basically mostly Evenfall, then skip Afterimage and Interludes for the most part but not entirely, and then we didn't really have a hugely detailed end initially from what I recall but we knew generally what was going to happen, so some of the stuff from later Fade would probably have been in the bullets. But when we got to the end of Evenfall, whatever was our next bulletpoint just did not feel right; we knew all the other stuff that starts Afterimage would happen instead.

For my long ongoing LGBTQ+ fantasy series I'm working on, the first book is finished but I'm editing it to change/add some significant stuff. I have a whole bunch of info on that which I've compiled over the years, so to an extent I have a general idea of plot things that will go down in the rewrite and also in the future into the other books, but a lot of details and even bigger points are left untouched. I prefer to let the characters/story/world/plot go where it wants to go, and I just have general points that I know make sense or have to happen eventually, and I look for how to fit them in as organically as possible to the way the story is going. If that makes sense. I will occasionally try to really work out exact storyline bullets but I get so bored so quickly that I never finish.

Because I like world-building and character development, I actually find it more fun and more useful for my organizational skills (any that exist, anyway, lol) to be aimed more toward that. Rather than focusing on the story and what the plot will be and what character will say what in which chapter, I prefer to dig into the past of the characters, dig into the world, the magic system or whatever is relevant, and have that info all squirreled away somewhere if needed. That way, as I'm going forward with writing the characters/story more organically, if things are going around what I initially thought the plot would be, this gives me something to then pull from for inspiration on how to incorporate this new plot/etc into the world more seamlessly, and make it feel more at home. And if you have all that info on characters, it also makes it easier to throw in things that flesh the character out more, and that can all lead toward character development in the future.

Boyd, for example - when we first had the valentine thing come up, it was just going to be a thing that happened that showed their miscommunication and how fucked the Agency was. But then it didn't make sense to me for it to just be a thing mentioned once and never again. So then that added to Boyd's story; now he was a valentine, so if it made sense or it was relevant, that was a thing that could or should come up. As the story progressed and the world grew, and with that the Agency and other factors were more fleshed out, it became more and more relevant. Then, by the time Fade came around, it was fully integrated into Boyd's story because by that point it would be weirder if it weren't - and because it made total sense in the characters' perspectives and the different organizations' perspectives and the story as a whole for the things to happen the way they did. But all of that, of course, then informs Boyd's mental health, physical health, and overall stability. Which then affects how he interacts with the world and other characters, which then affects the plot to an extent because of the choices he would make that may be different now, in the context of these life experiences, compared to prior to those life experiences. If the valentine thing never happened in Evenfall, a lot of Fade would be different. When we had that coming up in Evenfall, we didn't know another book was coming at all, let alone 3, let alone that it would end up having such a significant impact on the story and character development. But that's just kind of an example of building on things as you go, which is what I tend to do, personally.

As for the program - in the beginning we just used Word I think, and talked on AIM or something. It's been so long I don't totally remember. But for most of it we used Google Docs because that made it easy to share and write/edit at the same time.
