That's the beauty of magic, it could be either. I think, for most people, the glamour extends. It's a broken building. Dangerous. Rotting floors. Cracked stone. Broken glass. The peices are all there. Nothing extra, nothing missing. They're just in the wrong places, the plants are a little more wild. Pushing up through the stone, climbing through busted windows. Quintessence is a hell of a drug. We talk about it being used for hallucinations all the time. So, it stands to reason that there are wards, protections, hallucinations, that extend to anyone who walks in without the right intentions. That being said I think it's a little goofy when you're inside the real ministry and some outsider is walking around. The siblings/ghouls/clergy members can see them--but they can't see the clergy. It's almost like they're the ghosts. Walking through, eyes darting around. Stepping over felled beams that no one in the actual abbey can see. They're given wide birth, the people who need to know about them are summoned (Swiss, usually, he really loves to fuck with them. And Dew, on occasion, though he tends to be a little more malicious. Omega or Aether to make sure the hallucination holds). And they are watched/tormented/followed until they leave or die.

No wonder people feel so weird when they go into certain rooms. Sick, cold, dizzy. They attribute it to EMF fields or ghosts, but really it's just Aether dragging his fingers down their spine and pumping them full of quintessence. I'm also plauged by the idea of these people wandering into ghoul rooms. Seeing overturned bookshelfs. Trinkets littering the floor. Bending down to pick up a small glass turtle and roll it between their fingers before they're unceremoniously shoved over and the turtle just disappears. Rain really doesn't like it when they touch his things.

On the other hand--those with good intentions. Or those who do a very specific ritual in the basement ritual room--will find the glamor draining away when they step into the main abbey. They'll find themselves in the real abbey. How else do you think Siblings get recruited? They have to pass the test (do you know the ritual OR are you "pure of heart" for lack of a better phrase). And if they do--they'll find themselves welcomed home.

I am going over Murderbot's and ART's first interactions again and it's driving me crazy, so I really need to yell into the void about it.

Alright, so we have ART:

ART, a highly advanced deep space research vessel, who is very attached to its crew and seems to generally do what it's supposed to, especially when not doing so could endanger its mission - but ends up accepting a suspicious looking SecUnit that is lying about being a bot aboard itself. ART is evidently aware that it is directly breaking the rules in doing so. (Aside: How often does ART break the rules?) Why? All for that tempting media package that the SecUnit has to offer?

No.

It was sent off to do some work all alone and got bored and lonely. (I think there are different ways to intepret this, but looking at our super social raised-by-humans loving-its-crew never-shutting-up research vessel, I choose to think that is exactly what it was!)

Anyway, what does ART do now that it has this lying, potentially dangerous rogue SecUnit aboard? It

lets it know that it saw right through its lies and knows exactly what it is

intimidates and threatens it by showing off its own ridiculously extensive superiority (just to be on the safe side ofc)

gets bored after the SecUnit gets too scared to do anything interesting

asks the SecUnit to "stop sulking"

learns that the SecUnit has been through A Lot and seemingly understands how it made it feel and apologizes

gets bored again and starts lurking and harasses convinces the SecUnit to watch media about ships and their crews with it

[gets way too invested and agitated by the media, probably going through its first media-induced emotional crises (but gets through them with the support of the very patient SecUnit)]

tries to have a conversation with the SecUnit to get to know it better

gets offended that the SecUnit is not answering truthfully and won't share sensitive and very private information about itself

lets the SecUnit know it can see through its lies, calling it "inherently inferior" to itself and causing the SecUnit to sulkily shut down for four hours (lol)

immediately calls the SecUnit "unnecessarily childish" upon its awakening four hours later (referring to its own extensive experience with children to really get the point across)

And apparently all of this seemed to be a perfectly pleasant and normal interaction to ART, because:

That's how you make friends, isn't it?!

God, I love ART so so so much and this is SO funny to me! To be fair, I don't think anyone ever really prepared it for an interaction like this. (Probably because its crew did not expect it to pick up a stray rogue SecUnit and try to befriend it).

Panel one is so close to Tenzō that he's mostly out of the frame aside from the lower half of his face. He's trembling again. Behind him, Kakashi regards him with a critical eye. "Here I am, making you patch me up, asking you not to report me, but putting you in a situation where you have to," Tenzō says, then, adds, "And I'm scared of my own village." Panel two shows us only their backs. Tenzō is sitting straight, shaking, and Kakashi is leaning towards him slightly. "I'm, at this point, already a liability—" Tenzō starts, but Kakashi cuts him off. "Tenzō, I'm not going to report you," Kakashi says. Panel three, Tenzō turns to look at Kakashi. The tears have returned to his eyes and he doesn't seem to notice them. "I know you don't want to," Tenzō says. Panel four, Tenzō looks away and down. His shudders have noticeably increased. "You're very loyal," Tenzō starts. Kakashi interrupts, "Tenzō." "And I can't let myself take advantage of that," Tenzō says, as though he didn't even hear Kakashi. Panel five, Tenzō turns back to Kakashi. He's slightly smaller in the panel than the previous two. "I'm sorry. I don't know why I came here," Tenzō says. "Tenzō," Kakashi interrupts, this time in a larger speech balloon with bolder text, louder. Tenzō continues still, "I forced you into this situation—" Panel six features only Kakashi, his eyes are narrowed, his eyebrows low, and he's got his hand in front of himself as though he's making a slashing motion. "Tenzō, you're not listening to me," Kakashi says. "You're not a liability or a threat, and I will not be reporting you." Panel seven shows them facing each other. Kakashi is sitting straight, while Tenzō has once more assumed his defensive hunch forward. "Senpai—" Tenzō starts to argue. "I am however, going to bar you from both solo and split missions in any research labs for the next year, at least," Kakashi says, and some small, pale subtext beside it reads "Unless my order is superseded by a higher officer, obviously." Tenzō, looking frustrated, but still shaking and tears still rolling down his cheeks, argues back. "I told you, it wasn't the lab. I wasn't scared, it was like I—" /end ID

ok but im getting emo over heinkel again so im gonna talk about him again because yeah hes yet another sad character in a sea of sad characters and i love rezero for that but like he is a character consistently characterized by one loss after the other. it's a rollercoaster and its going straight fucking down and he is so miserable and absolutely alone and its both his fault and not his fault at all. but the way it starts is - its all out of his control. the more you think about the trajectory of his life the sadder it gets.

imagine you are heinkel and your parents are the sword saint and the sword demon and you come from a long line of knights and sword saints so thats almost definitely where youre headed, right? thats whats expected of you. you are nineteen years old and youre a knight in the royal guard, which was expected of you, and you have a wife and a beautiful baby boy, which was also expected of you, but at least you have so much joy and love for the latter while the former is just another chain on the astrea family line of people who are stuck to knighthood whether they like it or not. but your family is also just another chain because youre nineteen and your mother is still the sword saint and youre playing with fate here because either youre going to be the sword saint or your son will be.

your wife, the only equal you have, falls asleep one day and never wakes up. you are twenty-one years old and a single parent and then you are twenty-three years old and your son's fate is so much bigger than youll ever be. having the worlds love means that your love pales in comparison, doesnt it? everyone knows about your comatose wife because you keep searching so much for a cure that its just another thing to gossip about. every year that passes by she just continues to look the same as she did when she was awake and alive and loved you. (you dont know it yet but your son is going to reach the same age as her, because you dont find a cure for another sixteen years and you know that she wont love you anymore because who does? theres no one left because your son doesnt count.)

and everyone knows about you because of your family. because yeah, youre a good swordsman, but youre not liked by anyone in the knights. youre not a friend and youre certainly not a sword saint or sword demon. your son mind controls someone because he loves you so much that he would do anything for you and looks up to you like youre some hero, but youre just a wreck whos scrambling to keep what little you have. youre twenty-four and you lose your mom because you were too scared to go on the mission you were assigned on, because youre a coward and youre in over your head and you know, because everyone knows, that you dont measure up. you could never be prepared for this. in a long line of people who have to carry the weight of the world, you crumble easily. your mom goes on that mission and dies and your son becomes the sword saint like this was always going to happen. this is what being loved by the world means. you just killed your mom because you just couldnt suck it up and die on that mission instead. on top of that, your dad says that your five-year-old god of a son killed your mom. its just you and your son and the two of you both killed your mom but youre the worlds biggest laughing stock and your son is the up and coming hero and monster. but you still love your son. you really do.

right?

I've gone off several times at this point about how Crowley keeps wearing a vest on top of layers that really aren't complimented by vests. Turtleneck? Vest. Grey t-shirt? Vest. Henley? Vest. Do I love it? Of course I do. Is it awful? Also yes.

And then this morning I thought, in a post-wakeup, pre-coffee, mid-pushup haze, what if he's doing this to mock match Aziraphale. Maybe it's a weird little, "Oh, you're going to wear the same waistcoat for a couple hundred years? Cool. I can do that too."

ok so i like rule 63 fanart in general, right? and i was planning on making designs for rule 63 versions of every Twisted Wonderland student (and for those who dont know rule 63 means genderbent)

i just reblogged a great post by @/sebastianthemadlad talking about why they personally don't like the transfem vil headcanon and it makes really good points. and after reading it i was like "cool! how do i recontextualize this with the rule 63 au?" and had a crisis because... how in the world do i flip the script with vil and epel. (decided last minute to put it under a cut bc way too long and ramble-y)

epel is often mistaken as a girl and gets upset by this and wants to be more masculine because of his traditional upbringing. okay.

so if she's a girl instead, would she get mistaken as a boy instead and want to be more feminine? or maybe she is super feminine and still wants to be masculine but thinks its wrong for her to think that? there's not much of a conflict if she's just okay with being a tomboy or being perceived as a masc woman because her upbringing says women aren't supposed to be masc.

and then vil. oh vil oh vil. i love vil a lot. the platonic ideal of a feminine man. like if harry styles actually did what his fans claimed he did.

sebastian's post mentioned that if vil actually was a trans women, she'd be a tomboy, because the whole point of the character is breaking gender norms. and this really stuck out to me because i was gonna make my rule 63 version of schoenheit a trans woman. so what to do about valerie schoenheit.

making her a tomboy doesn't quite sound right to me, because i think of tomboy as a pretty sport-sy archetype, and she doesn't really scream sporty. like, she's an actress and a model, and she's all about being elegant and beautiful. so tomboy might not be the right word to describe her, but "elegant" and "beautiful" is not just for feminine aesthetics. she could just be a masculine woman. i also kind of half tossed out the idea in the tags i left on that post about nonbinary schoenheit and it's still all kind of mush in my brain right now and i might not take that concept with val totally but i might just steal part of that idea to make her more androgynous too? idk. i made this post because i haven't settled on anything yet
