I’m not supposed to tell anyone this, but I trust you guys. So…
Horikoshi personally told me that, after the main story was over, Dabi actually survived off of the sheer willpower to use his newly unlocked ice ability while raw doggin’ Hawks.

I just finished house of leaves here's my theory
I've avoided most spoilers and theories in the forums, subreddit etc so there's a good chance this is wah wha baby entry level "aw you're so dumb to think this" shit:
I think the entity that is the house does "exist" in-universe. I think it is a godlike entity. Like Navidson says, the house IS god. The house is the leaves, the labyrinth is its branches; the spiral staircase is the trunk. It holds up the world and the universe and, because it is so incomprehensible, it is inadvertently hostile towards anyone that interacts with it. But it NEEDS people to interact with it. More on that in a bit.
I don't think the Navidson Record was a movie that ever truly existed. I DON'T think it was a matter of a split universe. But I DO think the house is decent at mimicking human-made reality. It does not NEED to look like a house, but it does. It doesn't need to have stairs, or a window, or right-angles, but it does. These traits are uniquely human but the unnerving aspects reveal themselves when it fails to keep up the charade - whether this failure is intentional or unintentional. The larger interior than exterior, the distorting pathways; the horror happens when its mask slips. Perhaps in an effort to coax you into taking a closer look?
I think the Navidson Record is the house's attempt to "write" itself into existence. I think it needs to be beheld by humans in order to exist. We already know that the human inhabitants can affect the space - the hallways shift with the Navidson's emotions; the length of the staircase changes based on the mindset of those walking down it. After all, the concept of god was brought about by humanity, and perhaps it will need the continued effort of humanity to conceptualize and therefore materialize itself. God, or whatever this is, needs us as much as we need it.
Zampanó was the chosen conduit for its story because, as a blind person, he was more able to handle the profound visual horror the house creates. Dark pockets of shadow would not affect him; the looming cosmic horror of the blackness between the stars that Johnny mentions wouldn't bother him as deeply. He also lived alone, with no family or relatives that could stop or disrupt him from his work.
The fake resources, the interviews, the characters that don't exist - I think the house engineered those, as we know it can mimic human creation. It even at times goes "overboard" with itself - citing interviews with Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick, names almost too big to be believable. The timing and action of certain beats seem nothing short of a hollywood action movie at times - especially during the "Escape" chapter. Even the "happy" ending seems like too much to believe. I don't think those events happened, and that the house is perhaps misguidedly creating a mockery of its own story.
I think the distorted formatting and ramblings of things like lists of building materials, photographers, architectural examples, etc, are also evidence of this. The house can create, the house can consume, but when it comes to creating as a human does, it is not without error, as its omniscience and omnipotence seems to get in its own way of being believable and will tend to splinter off into multiple nonsensical directions, much like its hallways.
If Navidson, or someone like him, did exist, and did interact with the house, he did not get his happy movie ending. A passage at the end, in French, alludes to something like "I remember the war less and less" (Navidson was a war vet and also did wartime photojournalism) as well as "my wife, my daughter, my son, they're all dead." He references the house, and a black horse. Maybe Navidson did exist. And, unlike in his movie, his family was consumed. And eventually he was consumed. The house swallowing and destroying Navidson and all memory of his existence from the earth, only to then cough it up in the form of the Navidson Record once there was nothing left to chew on and a new human connection needed to be made.
Why did Zampanó die, and why was the task handed off to Johnny? I'm still trying to figure that one out. Zampanó seemed convinced something was coming for him, maybe he transcribed something he should not have (the entire minotaur section) and was then discarded for someone new. Perhaps Johnny was simply in the right place at the right time. However, poor Johnny, although brilliant and academically able to handle the task, is not nearly as well-equipped to handle a task given from an incomprehensible freaky-god-void-thing, and his mental health starts to deteriorate.
I don't think he just "got" whatever mental health issue was affecting his mom. I don't think his mom wrote the book, either. I think his emotional trauma and addictions made the perhaps unintentional "poisonous" effects of the house all the more potent. It's hard to know what is real and what is fake in that last passage he writes. He forgets Lude was killed in a motorcycle crash. He includes a section about a great interaction with Thumper and how he found a "clue" to the house's existence when he saw a band perform a song called the "five-and-a-half-minute-hallway". I don't think either of those events happened and were closer to an episode of maladaptive daydreaming/wishful thinking as an escape, as he loses sense of what is real and what isn't. But at the same time, who is to say what "real" even means in this context - the house is constantly shifting and writing and deleting bits of reality, and I think trying to sort experiences with it as "factual" or "delusions" doesn't really matter to a certain extent.
I don't think the house intends the harmful effects it has on the people that interact with it, directly or indirectly. I think it is a god that needs humans to exist. It bends the reality around us, but its humans are capable of bending it as well.

I think some of you have to learn not every post is about you, I just saw a post that was relating to social anxiety of hating to be a customer and so many people in there projecting and calling people pussies for having social anxiety, like they think this post was made specifically to make them feel like shit for not having social anxiety
Sometimes people make things or say things just to find kinship with others and know they're not alone. It doesn't mean someone is attacking you, nor does it mean that it's telling you you SHOULD feel this way and you're terrible if you don't.
Some of you really need fucking therapy.

it is totally okay to be hurt and tired and fed up with the american schooling system but i need you to understand that we need to be better about loudly and routinely defending public education.
yes, many teachers suck, many schools utterly suck. i also got bullied and was absolutely not given the right support for my needs. i am not defending public education because it was kind to me. i am defending it because it needs to exist.
right-wing republicans do not want an educated population. they want kids to be homeschooled or in private school. there is a huge religious undertone to this.
the most common argument is that despite high costs, the "result" is not "good" enough. they point to failing schools as proof that public education is just never going to work out. there will be arguments made here that you actually agree with: that teachers can be bullies, that we taught online for 2 years and still charged the same amount of tuition, that we have no recourse for students to actually have agency or a voice, and that schools are now unsafe for kids due to risk of illness and gun violence.
these are all placing the blame in a fraudulent way, one intended to get your parents to homeschool you. the less kids in a school, the less federally-awarded funding for that school, the less any school succeeds. they will not mention the fact it is their legislation that takes away important funding opportunities, that teachers are living at or below the poverty line, that buildings are not kept up to code, that administration is overpaid and forces specific curriculums, that corporations like (my personal enemy) Pearson Education control certain classroom goals because teachers can't afford other options. they pretend to be ignorant of the gun violence and say "oh just get a gun" - but these are the same people who will be sending their child to a private school with a bulletproof backpack. they don't care if your kid dies, though. they "don't believe" in covid, but they did get their kid vaccinated, because of course they did.
it is a closed loop. conservative parents hear the fearmongering and remove children from the system. frequently these parents are also deeply religious. the kids are raised without access to other media & learn to parrot their parents. you have now created a new generation of conservatives. additionally, one of the parents/caregivers must stay home and homeschool the children, usually for free. i will give you 1 guess which parent tends to stay home to homeschool the children. these parents are encouraged to have many, many children. those children are most likely not getting access to safe sex ed.
we might laugh at fox news suggesting teachers are forcing children to use kitty litter but: first of all, there is kitty litter in the classroom. it's part of an emergency kit in case children are locked in due to a shooter. so that's fucking dystopian, and the fact they've completely reimagined the scenario to somehow make the teachers look bad when it's instead a fucking huge symbol of our failure as a country to protect our children.... it feels a little intentional.
secondly: don't just dismiss the situation. because, yeah, obviously, no teacher is encouraging kids to be a catboy. but the actual undertone that fox news is trying to sew is an outright distrust of teachers and of public education. they rely on the dehumanization of trans people as a common touchstone to hide the fact they're pushing two agendas at once. (which is ironic. because the thing they accuse teachers of. is pushing. an agenda.)
whenever someone tells you they want you to read less, you should be suspicious of that. when someone tries to separate you and your education, you should be suspicious of that. i don't even like incel rhetoric nor would i want my kids exposed to it - but i would not take away my child's (age-appropriate) access to the internet. i would just provide more educational materials, not less. the difference here is that i believe we can resolve ignorance with knowledge; whereas conservatives believe that ignorance is bliss.
they misappropriate funding and demonize teachers. they pull the same trick each time - the same thing we are seeing with anti-trans rhetoric. they do not want you to have access to safe sex ed, so they act horrified, claim sex ed teaches you how to thrust deep, claim that we have no idea what "age-appropriate" means. since the mid-nineties, the united states has spent at least 2 billion dollars on abstinence-only education, even though to quote the above link: "a preponderance of studies has found no effect of abstinence education at reducing adolescent pregnancy". conservatives want you to think less of any person struggling with addiction so they can continue their racist "war on drugs", so they spend up to $750 million dollars a year on the DARE program which has absolutely no effect. acting like teachers "must" be "grooming" children is just the same thing - so they can demand that funding either goes to their causes or the funding doesn't "exist" ("i'm not paying for our kids to learn that thing!")
and they want you to feel uncaring about this. they are aware that you will hate some parts of your school experience. pretty much everyone does. they want to lean into the parts that you hate so that you don't put up a fight about it when they take it away for not being "good enough."
i know i maybe sound like a conspiracy theorist. but truly. truly. it is beneficial for conservatives to reduce your faith in the american public schooling system.
one of the explicitly stated campaign promises of the conservative party: to axe the Department of Education in 2024.
i know we are all tired and burnt out and there is so much else wrong with their entire platform. but maybe just - pay attention to this one.

Shen Yuan getting transported into pidw isn't "the system punishing him for being a lazy internet hater," but instead representative of "step 1 of the creative process: getting so mad at something you decide to go write your own fucking book" in this essay I will
#svsss#scum villian self saving system#shen qingqiu#shen yuan#the fact that people think scum villain#-a series that examines and criticizes common tropes in fiction-#is somehow against criticism or being a little hater is wild to me#especially since shen qingqiu never gets punished for being a hater#heck- he's still a little hater by the end of the series#he mostly gets punished for treating life like a play and like he and the people around him are characters#(or in other words- he suffers for denying his own wants and emotions and his own sense of empathy)#I think some of y'all underestimate how much writing/art is inspired by creaters being little haters#like example off the top of my head-#the author of Iron Widow has been pretty vocal about the book being inspired by their hatred of Darling in the Franxx#I think my interpretation of Shen Yuan's transmigration is also supported by the fact that this series is an examines writing processes#side note- though i understand why people say Shen Yuan is lazy and think its a valid take it still doesnt sit right with me#i am probably biased because my own experiences with chronic pain and depression and isolation#but ya- i dont think Shen Yuan is lazy so much as he is deeply lonely and feels purposeless after denying parts of himself for 20ish years#like yall remember the online fandom boom from covid right?#being stuck completely alone in bed while feeling like shit for 20 days straight does shit to your brain#the fact that no one came to check on him + he wasn't exactly upset about leaving anyone behind supports the isolation interpretation too#+in the skinner demon arc he describes his life of being a faker/inability to stop being a faker now that he's Shen Qingqiu#as “so bland he's tempted to throw salt on himself” and “all he could do is lay around and wait for death” (<-paraphrasing)#bro wants to be doing stuff but is stuck in paralysis from repeatedly following scrips made by other people#another point on “Shen Yuan isn’t lazy” is just the sheer amount of studying that man does#also he did graduate college- how lazy can he really be#he doesnt know what hes doing but he at least tries to actively train his students#and he actually works on improving his own cultivation + spends quite a bit of time preping the mushroom body thing#+he's experiencing bouts of debilitating chronic pain throughout all this#but ya tldr: Shen Yuan's transmigration is an encouragement to write and not a punishment and also i dont think its fair to call him lazy

a BIG part of the lore of Dungeon Meshi is how ageism is bad. About how the long lived races treat the young lived races like children and thus infantilize them and do not show them the respect and understanding they deserve simply because of their looks or short life spans. Whether its because to them they look like children in their eyes (like half foots and gnomes) or because the adult ages of the younger lived races are still in the child ages for the longer lived ones and so they get treated/viewed as children (we see otta receive comments about getting with minors when in reality she dated adult half foot women. so we already see this view towards things like this are a thing in the lore) We see this with chilchuck, senshi, and marcille where the two later view chilchuck as a child and treat him like one even though he is a full grown man who drinks (and is supposed to have grey hairs) all because he looks young and in the newest episode its revealed he is 29 which is still young children to the two of them. We see how perspectives that characters are children because of their age being a childs age for a different race as opposed to their race or because they look like children is a completely infantilizing and disrespectful behavior that causes so many problems in the long run. a theme that is completely flying over the average tumblr users head.
ive seen people get furious at other people because they sexualize chilchuck and even marcille
“oh they look like kids so dont do that you freak”
you absolute fool you missed a major theme of the fucking story. But because they look young suddenly they are children? have you paid no attention to the story? did you just ignore how the ageisim and weird mindset about ages like that causes so many issues that could easily have been avoided. and as for the age one i see people getting furious at others for being into and sexualizing izutsumi even though she is a year past adult in tall man years, but because she isnt in the adult age range in real life (wild your applying real life society standards to a fictional medieval fantasy world). even though even in lore she would be well an adult able to get married and everything tumblr really does have the media literacy of a toddler.

ok INCREDIBLY old content originally meant for this blog but in 2018 when i was just a wee lad with a little spinner propeller hat and big rainbow lollipop i went to a carnivorous plant convention in california and met a bunch of people who breed/collect/study these guys. one person was this collector who was slowly working on leaving the hobby or at least no longer growing plants, and he had a bunch of carnivorous plant related files he was charging like 50 cents for or something, and so i came into possession of these, which are examples of the kind of paperwork you have to have done to legally ship/trade endangered species of both plants and animals. functionally very boring paperwork, but something i found like, incredibly fascinating. i blacked out the personal id of the person and then immediately forgot to ever upload them, lmao.
these plants were bred and raised in a greenhouse and sold abroad, not taken from the wild, but because the species are endangered and often protected in their native countries (most of these are nepenthes, asian pitcher plants, a huge family spread throughout oceania and southeast asia), there's a lot more documentation that needs to be done regardless of their origin, both on the end of the seller and on the end of the buyer.
the rabbit hole on carnivorous plant trade is deep and kind of wild. there's plenty of common, non-threatened, greenhouse-grown pitcher plants on the market that people buy all the time, even non-collectors, but there's a whole debate to be had on if it's morally okay to be collecting the more endangered/rare of these plants in the first place. the big argument for breeding is that breeding them in captivity means there's more supply that's not poached from the wild, meaning poachers have less of an incentive to take the risk of taking adult plants from their habitats; from what i've heard, sometimes countries will issue permits for breeders to collect some wild seeds just to create a non-wild breeding pool to drive down the price. predictably, however, you also get people who are very much willing to pay a lot of money to get as rare of a plant as possible.
anyone familiar with the allure valuable plants have had over people throughout history can imagine the rest, but here's an article about a guy who started buying poached plants to enrich his private nepenthes collection, who then got busted by a fish and wildlife service agent embedded in his carvirorous plant circle. the plants this guy was buying were being sold to him without any CITES paperwork or declarations like the ones above; it was literally just a guy in indonesia taking rare plants from the woods around where he lived, selling them over facebook marketplace and ebay, and mailing them overseas as an undeclared 'gift' to get around customs. frighteningly small steps to take on all sides, to be honest.
(also, fun fact: another example of carnivorous plants that get poached are wild venus fly traps, which are only native to north and south carolina in the US. from what i understand it's a mix of people who genuinely did not know it's a native species and people who really are just going out into the woods and digging up plants to sell online. sometimes poaching is closer to home than you'd think!)
anyway. wild and interesting times in the land of plants recovered from a hard drive lmao
