episode 7 commentary - Mesmerised

swearing, spoilers for both the show and the books, unless you're a nerd like me (and can recognise what I'm ranting about) there is absolutely zero context some of this so you've just gotta figure that out

omg Georgie 🥺 I always feel really bad when they're like "we could draw straws?" and he just accepts his fate :(

"Jesus you're children" hits so hard, because like... they are, but in the show they're more like 15/16/17 ish. But then this guy takes half a look at them and immediately says that they're kids like they're meant to be in the books and they shouldn't be in Winkman's place because they're children and now I'm just repeating myself I think but idk it just ughhhhh

I really wish Lucy had finished her little rant at lockwood about how "at the centre of lockwood and co is you, and at the centre of you is-" because there was a perfect opportunity to call him a hollow boy

I love that even when he's trying to be undercover lockwood can't help but swagger around

lockwood and his flare for the dramatic (see what I did there), he really loves explosions doesn't he (just like his wife)

winkman is an arsehole and he deserves everything that's coming to him

lav made a very important post on twitter today. no one knows what he went through at winkman’s. when lucy got up she probably didn’t realize he was sitting in an electrical chair and when they got out she didn’t ask. he didn’t tell. george asked what they’d been doing all night but lockwood didn’t tell him. he didn’t tell them.

no one knows he was tortured.

Watching the show after finishing the books gives me a new appreciation for some of the details they added.

The first time, for example, Penelope's "I'm a good listener" meant absolutely nothing but now I'm just sitting here screaming internally

earlier today i was going insane in my uni's library while reading the hollow boy so here are some thoughts i had that were too long for a post

i've seen the "come off it, you know i'd die for you" line floating around tumblr ever since i finished the show but nothing could've prepared me for the context in which lockwood says that. he nearly did!! earlier in the book when he jumps to save her life amd ends up nearly fracturing his skull!! and then again he risked his life in the department store, she was thrown off into an underground abandoned prison with multiple spirits he goes after her!!

oh and the fact that the fetch pretended to be lockwood??? and lucy thought he'd died??? i knew was probably alive and i still had my heart beating fast as fuck

the fucking title of the book. just last week i was wondering what "the hollow boy" might be referring to and then in the scene with the fetch where lucy realizes it's not actually lockwood because the body of thing was hollow i thought "oh that's why" but then he fucking drops this???

i was actually going insane over this

this?? i know that at some point lucy leaves the agency and i think i'm starting to figure out why/how and i am not liking where this is going

It also makes me curious about what story the show intended for the Winkman's kid. In the book he's Julius 2.0, a big enforcer in training. Leo in the show is a lot creepier and unsettling. He'a younger, seems non verbal, he has a toy that Lucy gets Bad Vibes (TM) from. It would've been interesting to see what that was all set up for in Season 2 ... IF WE HAD ONE NETFLIX!

I know some people were unhappy with the change in the Lockwood & Co. TV series to make Joplin a woman instead of sticking to the books, but I actually think it was a brilliant choice because it gives a glimpse into another horrific yet entirely realistic reality of a society where children are thrust into roles not meant for them, roles meant for adults. A reality where a predatory adult woman spending a lot of time alone with a teenage boy wouldn't so much as raise an eyebrow, wouldn't merit more than a teasing "Oh, 'Pamela' now, is it?" from the boy's teenage friend. That Lockwood and Lucy didn't pick up on the fact that Joplin was preying on George (albeit for different reasons) makes even more sense in this context because I have to believe that that kind of behavior from the adults towards the front line soldiers that were the children had become a lot more normalized at that point.

It's hilarious to me how much the second half of the show seemed to want Lockwood specifically to suffer. Three instances come to mind in particular: at Winkman's, at the auction, and the fight with Joplin.

Winkman's in the book: Lucy and Lockwood snoop around, get caught, get thrown out

Show: Lockwood gets ELECTRIC CHAIR TORTURED

The auction in the book: Lucy and Lockwood’s plan works fairly well. They still jump into the Thames, but all in all, it goes according to plan

Show: a DEPRAC agent with a family gets MURDERED and Lockwood has a PANIC ATTACK because he feels at fault

Fight with Joplin in the book: Lockwood has a few scrapes from the fight with the thugs, comes and saves Lucy, George, and Kipps. The gun doesn't go off.

Show: SHOOT HIM AND HOIST HIS COLLAPSED BODY UP THE CATAFALQUE

something that I noticed about the show adaptation of Lockwood and Co is that in a lot of instances where they changed something from the book, they acknowledged the original book scene through the show dialogue (i.e. Lucy saying they should just come back to winkman’s in the morning disguised as customers) and idk I thought that was nice
