Just me venting about printer stuff

I'm out here creating notes on articles and collecting ones I want to use for notes, all on my computer (my book collection is a whole other thing) and so I have long ass word doccuments (I can never spell that word correctly -_-) that I need to organize and tabs open with articles that let you print them and the need to figure out how to turn ones you can't into a doc you can print (easy with wikipedia, so text dense, but when it's something with a lot of pictures that creates it's own problem) and I just have so much stuff I plan to print out and put in my binder-grimoire (as opposed to my notebook ones. The binder is nice because I can stick all sorts of stuff in it and keep re-organizing it afterwards), but I have a problem. I bought a new, relatively cheap, printer because the one I had been using broke and I had limited access to it (It was not my own) and setting it up keeps feeling overwhelming, but I have so much stuff that I'm like

I am tired of small but worse design changes

Something like 8 years ago I was gifted a set of Bose Quiet Comfort headphones. They are wired, they don't connect to anything via bluetooth, and the noise cancelling part is powered by an external AAA battery. The cable is something like 5 feet long, and has the standard up/down/center button configuration attached to the microphone embedded into the wire. The port connection on the headphones is protected, tucked up into the body of the ear phone. When they're off my head and sitting on the table, the ear cups rest flat against each other. They came with a jack adapter for technology that hadn't been updated to make them back compatible and a case that fit all those components without room to be jostled around.

I really like these headphones. I like these headphones so much that I've repaired them multiple times (I go through the foam pads about once every two years, they're made of plastic leather and they start shredding around then).

I like these headphones so much that I decided to get a wireless pair, to replace the wireless earbuds I have that finally died after 6 years of heavy use (disappointing.... i have a pair of wired $15 skullcandy earbuds that i purchased when i was 13 (12ish years ago now) that I've accidentally washed like 4 times with no impact to the sound quality or microphone quality).

I decided to get the wireless version because the wired version from 8 years ago was so good that I couldn't imagine that the newer version would be worse.

It's a comparable product, but it's not the same. And because I like the old version so much, the new one is, indeed, worse.

The earcups don't sit flat against one another on the table. This 1) puts uneven wear on the pleather and supporting foam. It's going to start to degrade from the bottom, and sooner than the wired counterpart (sigh.....) and also 2) makes the system more prone to damage if they're packed away in a bag (nobody really uses the cases they come with). This is because the non-parallel angle that the ear cups sit at against each other adds stress to the overhead bridge and the hinges while also leaving more crevices inside the earcups exposed to anything in the bag with it (more likely to get caught on stuff)

It came with a wire (which i was surprised about)! The wire is maybe half the diameter of the old wire (more fragile!!!) and significantly shorter. Criminally so, at least a foot/30 cm (haven't broken out the tape measure). While the wired version is meant to be plugged into something on a table and has plenty of length for good cable management, the wireless version's cable only has enough length for the distance between headphones and approximately the front pocket on a pair of pants. Not ideal. Also there's no buttons on the embedded microphone, but that's because they're on the headphones themselves (no redundancies here, folks).

The port connection is not protected and the jack itself is long enough it could get caught and bent on a shoulder. This is only a problem because my next point.

There is no way to listen to anything via bluetooth WITHOUT any noise cancelling at all (called "passive" mode by the manufacturer). Too long using the noise cancelling gives me a migraine (some people call this "ear sucking"???), so it would be nice to use these without that. The closest they give you is having microphones on the outside of the headphones pick up sounds that are then played by the speakers, so you can "hear them". What a waste of power. If you want to use them in passive mode, you have to be plugged into the wire (which, as i mentioned, is shorter and prone to damage). Infuriating. This is fixable by a firmware update and is a known issue. So far, no dice.

Other changes that are not my favorite that I can live with:

Swapping durable fabric on the overhead bridge for pleather. This is going to fall apart. Unlike the foam cups, however, it appears that these pieces of pleather are connected by stitching. I'm sure I will have updates about this as time goes on, particularly because I do not anticipate this portion being self-repairable. Additionally, the material slides on my hair really well, meaning they don’t stay in place very well if I’m moving around (which was kinda the whole point in buying them….)

They're noticeably heavier (to accommodate the internal batteries?)

USB-C charging. This is fine, and the more companies move to a uniform charge port the better, but again the cable is very short. These are not intended to be worn while they are charging despite all the design choices that make it seem like they are. (Charging port is in mirror to the wire port).

Ear cups swivel at a greater angle than before (I don't know why?)

Things I would have liked to see changed:

Less intense noise cancelling (this is an option! but comes at the price of a lack of no noise cancelling at all option)

Better materials and construction on the foam pads on the ear cups. The pleather isn't durable, comes apart in shreds, and the fabric backing isn't strong enough to keep the foam contained on it's own once it does. The fact that the pleather is glued (or melted?) together instead of stitched is part of the problem.

Anything I should know before trying to set up a microphone for my laptop the first time?

That all comes down to what kind it is, but for the moment I'm going to assume something for general purpose consumer use. For the moment I will demonstrate with Windows 7 because I'm old and stubborn, but 10 gives you many of the same options in the fancy newer layout. Just look for similar terms as you go. I haven't used a mic on a Mac or a Linux machine in a very long time to get specific to that.

If it's a classic computer microphone with a 3.5mm/1/8" stereo TRS (that's Tip Ring Sleeve) audio jack, you want the connector on your laptop that might be indicated with either a microphone symbol OR it might be color coded pink (do they still do that for laptops sometimes?). Just plug it in. Don't plug it into the Line In port, that's not what you're after here (it might be light blue).

You want to check in your sound devices section (either in control panel/settings, or selected by the speaker icon on your taskbar next to the time).

If it isn't already the default, first go to the Recording tab, then select the device in the list, and click "Set Default". After that, you may want to do some level adjustment, so select "properties". From there, you can go to the Levels tab and adjust accordingly.

For either type, it doesn't hurt to do a test recording with something and play it back, see how it sounds. Tweak as needed.

If you're actively hearing yourself while you're testing it, that might be because you have "Listen to this device" selected in the Listen tab (just to the left of the Levels tab)

Individual programs will let you select which device you would like to use as your audio input, and it doesn't necessarily have to be your default device.

I can't really speak to using bluetooth wireless audio devices, as the only one I've ever used worked better with the accompanying USB wireless dongle on my work laptop. More or less if it's connected, it will give you the same options as before

I know modern earbuds and some varieties of headset have TRRS 3.5mm connectors carrying audio for the headphones and the microphone on the same connector. You'll have to check if your laptop has a connector that can accept that (check the spec sheet), otherwise you'll need to find an appropriate splitter cable to make it work in a standard TRS microphone connector.

Because of that, the sound controls were set so that the music played only in the front seats. “No, no, no,” you held the buttons down in a fruitless attempt to resuscitate them. “Damn it!”

Not wanting to disturb your friend for your own entertainment, you snapped your earbuds back into their carrying case. Which was also dead, because in your great planning for this trip, you had forgotten to charge that too.

“No, my headphones just died, and we have like, three more hours left,” you groaned, dropping your head back onto the headrest.

“Woos, that’s okay, I’ll just…” You desperately wracked your brain for a reasonable way to finish that sentence.

In the back of your mind, you knew he was joking around, but also he was quite literally batting his eyelashes at you—were long eyelashes a fairy thing or a Jungwoo thing? Something else you wanted to ask him—and suddenly you were saying yes, the headphone was in your hand, and Jungwoo was happily scrolling through his music library. He’d found something satisfactory, and you put the earbud in to listen along.

“Y/N, you can’t be all the way over there, the headphones are gonna fall out!” Jungwoo scolded you with an exasperated sigh.

You looked at the empty seat between the two of you in bewilderment, where the headphone cords were pulled near taut. You were way too focused on trying to figure out if he actually meant for you to move to the middle seat to realize that Jungwoo had undone his own seatbelt instead—until his arm was sliding around your shoulders, long legs crowding yours in the small space of Johnny’s backseat, and the entire length of his side pressed up against you.

“There we go,” he said brightly. “Now the headphones won’t get tugged out of our ears if we want to look out the window.”

Your gulp was comically loud as your eyes were trained on your blank phone screen in your lap, “Right.”

He turned his head to look from the passing scenery over to you, holding your (surely alarmed, wide-eyed, maybe even terrified) gaze for a moment. The corner of his lips curled, and then he reclined back into his new seat beside you.

You hoped that Mark was too focused on their music up front to be regularly checking the scents in the car, or if he was, that he was going to keep his forked tongue to himself. You knew that you were oozing panic from every pore right now, you didn’t need a basilisk blabbing that to the whole car. Taking a deep inhale through your nose, you desperately tried to calm your heartrate back down. Fairies didn’t have super hearing that you were aware of, but with how close you two you were, you wouldn’t be surprised if Jungwoo would be able to hear your heart hammering anyway.

“So how did you end up riding with Johnny?” You asked him quietly, hoping that some light conversation would distract you from how hyperaware you were of every square centimeter of you that was in contact with him. “I thought Taeil would’ve been taking you.”

“Yuta was taking Jaehyun and Taeyong and didn’t have enough room for all the extra beach stuff in his truck. Johnny would’ve had enough room, except he was bringing you and Donghyuck, and we would’ve all been much more squished in Taeil’s car. So I got voted off the island and Taeil’s bringing Doyoung and the extra beach stuff.”

You chuckled, the tension in your body easing as you could perfectly imagine how that conversation went down between your friends, “How tragic.”

“I don’t mind, I like you.” Jungwoo’s breath washed over the shell of your ear, making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and your shoulders jump a little. Which he could definitely feel.

“Oh!” The squeak in your voice was audible. “Yeah, we— we all like you too, Woos.”

“So do you like it?”

“Huh?”

“The music.”

You admittedly hadn’t even been paying attention to any of the songs playing in the headphones you were sharing, all too focused on your proximity rather than the alleged reason for it. Taking a few seconds, you listened to the song that was playing at that moment. It was a softer indie-sounding track, and you found yourself nodding maybe a little too enthusiastically, “Oh, yeah, yeah, it’s good.”

Aurora finds a karaoke machine

This all started when Aurora discovered the karaoke machine in the game closet. She made the mistake of opening the closet where the ghouls stored the board games and Wii when not in use. After game nights everything inevitably got haphazardly shoved back in the closet with no rhyme or reason. Which generally led to a small avalanche coming tumbling down on whichever unlucky soul decided to open the closet next.

She ends up deciding to actually clean rather than shove everything back in to create an even larger mess. As she shuffles around towards the back, she finds it. A black amplifier, smaller than the one’s she’s seen used for band practice, with wireless microphones in attached slots. Curious, she pulls it out and sets it on the coffee table.

The mess forgotten, she pugs the amp in and begins to poke buttons. It lights up, a ring on the front center flashing rainbow lights. She notices the aux cable built in and fishes her phone out of her back pocket. With a shrug, she plugs it in and pulls up her music app. She selects a song at random and is delighted when the song begins to play, amplified by the speaker.

Hearing the music, Cumulus pops her head into the common room.

“Hey Rora. Oh you found the karaoke machine! I was wondering where that went.”

“Karaoke?” Aurora tilts her head to the side and scrunches her brow.

Cumulus grins “Let me show you!”

Cumulus walks Aurora through putting fresh batteries in the mics and bluetooth connecting them to the speaker. Then she cues a karaoke track of the song Aurora had picked and tells her to start singing.

Giggling, Aurora jumps in, singing at the top of her lungs and dancing around the common room. Cumulus claps as she finishes and Aurora does a little bow.

“It's your turn!” Aurora tosses Cumulus the other mic. Cumulus laughs and cues up a different song.

By this point, they’ve attracted a crowd. Cirrus and Sunshine wander in first; Sunny happily taking a turn while Cirrus watches and cheers them on. Phantom and Swiss, Dew and Rain, and Mountain and Aether follow soon after.

Before long a karaoke contest has been proposed. Aurora and Cumulus are on one team and Sunshine and Swiss on the other. The trade off solos and duets as the rest of the pack acts as judges and keeps score.

They end in a tie so they conclude the night with Love Shack, all four of them singing and getting the rest of the pack in on it too.

The two teams are neck and neck. Aurora starts strong with Like a Prayer. Sunshine answers with I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Cumulus nails I Will Survive and Swiss hams up Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. Aurora and Cumulus kill it with Ain't No Mountain High Enough but Sunny and Swiss get everyone laughing with Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.
