You know, for a show with so many female characters that so many of us love given how they all get time in the spotlight one way or another and they fill that time up rather wonderfully since they are deeper and more developed than what we're used to seeing in general media, it is peculiar (to say the least) to see so few "alternative" ships to the main one.
I'm not saying the canon ship doesn't deserve its attention -- I'm wondering instead why the canon ship and it alone seem to guide the WN fans who just so happen to enjoy writing/reading fic or fanart or whatever.
You'd think all these cool women would inspire more ships or combinations thereof, but those of us who aren't invested in avatrice just... Float along, around one another, ignored (and, yes, mostly undisturbed too; being unpopular does have its advantages and that includes a lot less weirdos leaving you strange or awkward messages -- it does not, however, shield us from people flooding our goddamn tags on AO3 with fic that has nothing to do with our little ships and I do wish such negligence of the pairing itself meant we didn't have to deal with this spam...)
I am also not saying that fandom activity should be based solely on shipping (and recently someone on Reddit was rather confused by the fact that a lot of it is, which is quite an interesting topic to discuss in itself -- after all, there is more to fan creativity than shippy fic... Or there used to be), merely that, here, it appears that a canon relationship can outshine interest in the other, non-canon ones. It's already there and it was doubtless well-done by the show, so it's natural that it should claim people's attention, sure. It's just that being canon was never the parameter for whether people were interested in these or those two (or more) characters maybe being involved and trying to explore what that could mean through fanwork.
There has always been a complaint haunting fandom spaces concerning the minuscule amounts of f/f fic, art, discussion, w/e based on how few (interesting or sympathetic or relatable) female characters there are in media at large. So what I'm curious about is why fan creations made around WN -- a show that finally gives us a whole cast of female characters that are what we have been craving for decades -- don't also reflect its diversity.
There are alternative ships (I'm here, all happy in my tiny Doctor Superion bubble, and I know there are Camila/Lilith, Ava/Lilith, Mary/Shannon, Mary/Lilith shippers out there, so a warm hello to you if you're reading this), but go on AO3 and compare the numbers of things tagged with these proper pairings to the grand total of WN stories. Better (or worse) still, do so with the "otp: true" trick or simply by excluding avatrice from the search to see how many are left.
It's... A considerable difference. And a mystery, at least to me.

Hi! Can you tell me why you fell in love with this show and these characters? ⚔️
oh gosh why indeed. i'd say it was the characters first. the sheer fact that beatrice exists - a badass queer woman of color - within this context was incredible to me (mind, i grew up with 90s shows where a) subtext was the closest we were ever gonna get in terms of queer rep and b) asian women were always relegated to being either "other" or a trophy gf or both), not to mention ava freaking silva with her fierce joy for life and love, for her love of life, and the ferocity with which she defends that for others. and that's not even touching all the other characters!
which leads me to the second reason: fandom. if it wasn't for fandom, i wouldn't have gotten interested in the other characters, in the nuances and beauty of the show, etc. everyone's love has been so fervent in fanworks and discussions - it's also what gave me the courage to start posting my own fics, and as they say, the rest is history lol
this may sound trite, but it's true: a lot of things about wn fandom changed my life. i'll be forever thankful to have been witness to it, much less part of it <3

Protagonist-centric readers will do anything but admit that their MCs did lie and impact other characters' decisions. It's not the side-characters fault that they did not know the whole truth because *drum roll* they weren't told anything and/or was deliberately lied to.
LQQ being hated bc he impaled XL in a coffin for a long time but like... XL admitted to killing the King of Yong'an and committing the bloody massacre so what was LQQ supposed to do? Sit down and ask his Guoshi for the truth when we know damn well XL will just continue to admit to it? XL didn't want to tell LQQ the truth to protect LQQ and the two groups of people, and that's completely admirable, but what LQQ saw was his Guoshi stabbing a sword through his father's chest and admitting to everything so him reacting the way he did was completely valid. The single act of killing the king was treason 100x already, and as the son of the king, LQQ's reaction was not out of the ordinary. we don't want XL to suffer and be even more traumatized, but XL already knew that the consequences wouldn't be pretty and lied anyway. idk why fans can't grasp that.
Or for JC's case, HE IS LITERALLY THE ONE PERSON ALIVE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD WHO ACTUALLY DESERVES SOME KIND OF EXPLANATION FROM WWX HIMSELF, THE MAN WHO ACCIDENTALLY CAUSED WN TO KILL JXZ AND INDIRECTLY KILLED JYL DESPITE CLAIMING THAT HE HAD EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL. These two aren't strangers to JC at all; they're his sister and his brother-in-law, or more importantly, his sister's beloved husband and father of his nephew. He deserves to be angry and bitter at the one person who did all that, and there is no time limit for how long he should remain bitter and angry about it. The GCT was a whole mess and they both made HUGE sacrifices out of love but the only one whose sacrifice is made invalid is JC because one, it was short-lived and two, they already didn't like JC so no matter what he does for WWX, it will be seen as something negative.
I don't even want to get into the hell-hole regarding LXC but... damn...
the revelations after a character found out the truth should be "oh man, so that's what really happened" not "this character was a dick because they didn't know about the major sacrifice the MC made for them that would only be revealed many years later, and it's not even voluntary because someone else told the truth, not the MC themself"
I'm not the first nor am I the last person to say this but a protagonist is just a character we see, mainly, from their POV or the character that we follow the story through. That's all there is to it. I feel like a lot of danmei readers have yet to read a variety of stories about an MC that's completely shit but serves to tell a story just as important and interesting.
okay, first of all-- people hate LQQ?? The sweetest, most violent himbo of all????????????? even Xie Lian doesn't hate him for what he did??????
i have nothing to say to such people
i'll be honest, it is really only relatively recently that i've fully come to realise how completely Jiang Cheng deserves an explanation or even just acknowledgement of any kind from Wei Wuxian, and how cowardly and selfish it is that Wei Wuxian refuses to give it. and I say this with a heart full of love for WWX-- he is dealing with Some Trauma (tm) but that doesn't mean his refusal to even speak to JC isn't hurtful and unfair, even if it's what he needs... but man everyone in fandom and fanworks is focused on WWX taking what he needs in this situation and not even remotely considering that just maybe he also justifiably owes something to someone he harmed and who he supposedly (formerly?) cared about (i think he still cares)
the lan xichen thing is literally inexplicable to me and i will never understand it

as a lifeless freak i have nothing against socmed aus except two things: 1) all those characters use twt under their real names and proceed to have relationship drama out in the open, come ON, and 2) they just... talk about their daily life. who does that. this is insane, and crazy. where’s a twitter au where wwx and lwj have beef over their fandom opinions. sanzun but they’re having a drama about idk. organising a zine. wn ripping jc a new one because jc’s succesful fanfic was actually based on a headcanon wwx wrote down in jc’s fic notes file when jc was sleeping and later convinced him he must have written it himself, high on post-operation painkillers. meanwhile wwx was doxxed and left the internet after someone made the connection between his writing style and the writing style of a notorious writer of “gross” fics; also he crowdfunded an artbook but then ran away with the money and it only turned out later that he only did it to save his friends from homelessness and starvation. something something bones while we’re at it. jgy reports nmj for harassment and gets his account (and years of his fanworks) deleted, and in return nhs exposes the deletion + his plagiarized stories written for his father’s raunchy book series + that he’s helped his father’s “self-pub” publishing house that obviously scammed people out of their rights + that he’s dated and had a kid with his sister, who disappears off the internet immediately. the whole party ends with jgy, universally hated by the fandom and many people outside of it, deleting every trace of his presence on the internet. lxc makes his account private and goes inactive and suffers, because despite a long history of twt/tumblr DMs he’s never got jgy’s e-mail and has no means of reaching him AND he can’t ask if anyone had preserved jgy’s fanworks because everyone hates him now
like, make it real, guys

This fandom is starting to really dispirit me. Before, there were the jc/jgy stans and wx antis that we had to run from in order to enjoy any fanwork, be it meta, fic, art... but when you found ppl who disliked them or were really fans of the work, you were set. Like finding a little oasis to enjoy the work as the author intended, it was a small space, but it was there. Now suddenly there is this wave of victimizing wwx to an extreme? I don't understand the point in making him such a poor baby who was scared of everyone. He was a victim in the novel, but he never was this woe-is-me uWu. He fought and endured and surpassed the trauma and abuse, and I'm not saying that it's wrong to bring attention to the things he went through because ppl deliberately ignore it in order to prop they fave or pretend the story is something it's not, but. I don't know how to explain the way they're trying to make him into this pitiful thing, that should be bitter and hateful against everyone. It genuinely looks like what jc/jgy stans do.
There is such bitterness and condescending self-righteousness in these takes, idk. The latest wave of it brought so much Lan hate, and even ppl who claim to be wx/wwx stans are starting in even on lwj, comparing him to yzy/jc and claiming he was abusive and wwx was rightfully scared of him, afraid of being hurt because he justifiably subconsciously equated him with his abusers, and he did everything he could to keep his distance due to fear of being physically attacked and killed. It's such a wild thing, but it seems like wwx stans feel a sort of validation into ripping onto other characters, into making wwx the only good one and that lwj should grovel and be grateful, and it feels like the only ones they don't drag are the wen, but, in a very dehumanizing way? like they consider them just an accessory or part of him, just another thing to use as a weapon against other characters and I feel like the only reason they don't rip them too is that they're dead and thus easily idealized non-entities to project on (and wn is treated like he is wwx little puppy who will defend him no matter what, as wwx deserves). That's the feeling I'm getting, these people are projecting hard on wwx and changing him with excuses of reading and interpreting the novel. I don't think they even realise that, though, especially the wen thing.
sorry for the huge incoherent rant, it's just really draining the enjoyment for me, it feels like nowhere is safe to enjoy it anymore, ppl who used to delight in the novel now are just another flavour of jc stans, changing the story and wwx to fit their victim narrative, and it's so fucking sad.
(The ask mentioned here earlier)
YES. ALL OF THIS. Every line of this.
I talked about it here, but I had to cut out so many other blogs (& ppl) bc even when they had decent opinions on jc, jgy etc. they started veering into ~make WWX a victim~ territory. Even the Lans are bad >:0, LQR is evil, LXC is terrible, he never wanted LWJ to have friends! He told LWJ to talk to WWX because he was trying to keep them apart! 🤪 He looks down on LWJ! LWJ is bad too! for not cutting his fam out for WWX (even though WWX never wanted this) and going off to live a happy farmer life w WWX...Which is hilarious as only the most absurd takes can be, bc WWX wasn't even able to do a day's worth of farming in HIS DREAM. He just wants to live his life w LWJ, he didn't suddenly develop a passion for horticulture.
And your description of how they portray the Wens finally, beautifully put into words what I could't put my finger on.
I wanted to post THIS ask too before I answered this, bc it illustrates what's being talked about.

mdzs ship opinions
wei wuxian/lan wangji: THE ship. this is all I care about. I can read 100 fanfics with the same plot as the novel where wwx flirts relentlessly with lwj thinking he will never reciprocate while lwj actually has been burning with love for wwx for 15 years and I will never get tired of it
wei wuxian/wen ning and wei wuxian/wen ning/lan wangji: I can’t personally get into this bc my read is wwx sees wn as a little brother or even a son but it seems like most people who ship this just want wn to be happy so I can’t be against that
jiang cheng/lan xichen: I did not think of this while reading the novel bc they barely interact so I was surprised by how much fan content there is of them. but it makes sense bc they’re the brothers of the main characters and people love that plus their dynamic complements wangxian’s dynamic pretty well. I wouldn’t say I ship this but I enjoy it as the background pairing in wangxian fic
jiang cheng/nie huaisang: when you just finished dicking down jiang cheng and youre in the pantry looking at his nephew’s snacks you’re about to eat
jiang cheng/wei wuxian: they’re brothers. they might not be blood related but everything about their relationship says siblings to me. it’s weird to ship them
wen qing/any minor female character or female oc: this is good. this is what she deserves. get wen qing a girlfriend please
jin guangyao/nie mingjue/lan xichen: something was going on here but I dont think it was good. I’m not really interested in readng about their Fucked Up relationship but I also can’t see them as a happy triad ever. Im like, I don’t want to ship it but I believe it happened
nie mingjue/lan xichen: if we get manlet guangyao out of the picture I do like these two together. I think lxc should have a buff boyfriend
xiao xingchen/song xichen: they are boyfriends for sure but I feel like we don’t get enough of their relationship before it turned tragic for me to be interested in fanwork
mo xuanyu/xue yang: I have seen multiple fics with this pairing and I don’t want to read any of them bc just the concept is hilarious to me
jin ling/lan sizhui/lan jingyi: I think any combination of these three is cute

Adriel from Warrior Nun is such a great example of the traditional Antichrist image in media.
Tumblr media
Adriel has similarities to both the Antichrist and Satan, really. For example, he was imprisoned for a thousand years. If I remember correctly, in the traditional Christian timeline, Satan is imprisoned for a thousand years, then released, the Earth experiences a period of Tribulation, after which comes the whole Eschaton. Adriel was imprisoned for a thousand years. Tribulation is supposed to last for seven years I think, but the Antichrist apparently rules for three and a half (according to Revelation). In Warrior Nun, Adriel "reigns" for two months, but who knows, William Miller was so active in the efforts to save the show, maybe he'll return for season 3 (#warriornunsaved). We can only hope. Besides, Adriel's girlfriend's name is Lilith...
Now, let's start from the obvious. The Mark of the Beast. The ironic part - the Mark is a cross (eh, still, "Six six six, Number of the Beast" sounds better than "Spiked Cross, Symbol of the Beast", or something like that). Adriel's followers have it tattooed (be it not necessarily on the forehead, or the right hand). The show didn't portray it as needed for things like buying and selling (Rev. 13:18), it's more symbolic. But, Adriel is merciless to opposition, he tortures them, intimidates them, kills them, and, his weird burning light scorches them. Very on-point for the Antichrist.
"The Beast" in Rev. has seven heads and ten horns. I haven't noticed a nod to it (let me know if anyone else did), nor to leopards, but one of the heads is supposed to have a healed mortal wound, which makes people hail the Beast. Adriel literally receives a head wound that heals in Season 1 finale. And, he gets stabbed in the neck in S2. On live TV. And heals. Then laughs like a crazy person. The whole "who could compare to the Beast" is true in the show - people literally have posters saying "Only Adriel can save you". Like Kristian said, he's here. He's not an idea, he's not distant. He's living and breathing, and among people.
The Second Beast, or the False Prophet, I think is Kristian. The False Prophet is essentially The Antichrist's PR angent, which is a good way to describe Kristian. He helps Adriel perform his false miracles, he does his best to convert people (most notably Jillian and Duretti). Also, Kristian is a former clergyman who lost his faith in pursuit of "truth". Very fitting.
Rev. makes it clear that the Beast comes before the Great Battle. Lilith mentions there's a "Holy War" coming. Adriel was doing his best to stop it. That's all I need to say.
The Antichrist is supposed to blaspheme against God. If Reya is "God", Adriel certainly does that. But... Is she? I have my suspicions about her. I wouldn't be surprised if she were the Dragon instead, Adriel being her "Beast with Wrath", who maybe rebelled against her. She is a being of Light (Lucifer...), her servants are suspiciously demonic. Still... Would Adriel identify with Satan, then? The "Devourer of Worlds" he spoke of coud be someone else entirely.
V. Soloviov describes the Antichrist as someone with plans to bring great things to mankind, someone who would inspire peace, not war. That's literally Adriel. Adriel also doesn't "deny God" - he either seeks to be superior, or portrays himself as the Messiah for his own gains. Adriel is extremely intelligent, charming, powerful, and extremely prideful (not to mention attractive). He doesn't exactly become the President of Europe, neither the Emperor of Rome, but people for sure do give him the highest of honours (it's a shame the show didn't pay too much attention to his political influence; he's a born politician, he's so Machiavellian). Adriel seeks to take over the Church. He offers great gifts to Religions (I assume not only Catholicism, but others too; he focuses so much of Catholicism because of it's power, as well as a personal vendetta) if they cooperate with him. He demands to be recognized as the true Lord and Savior, and he wants to erase Christ. Duretti refuses, so he's killed with the whole World as the witness. I'm sure if the season were longer, Kristian would have become the Pope (he reminds me so much of Apollonius, even though Apollonius is obviously meant to be Rasputin; when you compare Soloviov's work to historical context (Russian Empire), the allegories are clear - people often write what they know after all, and philosophers criticise their own society). Adriel scorns the notion of "higher life", wants to create "Heaven on Earth". He literally asks " What about this World?" The Opposition isn't banished to the desert in a literal sense, but is small, and has to go into hiding, however briefly.
That being said, shame on Duretti. How hard was it to shout "Children, Antichrist!" while pointing at Adriel?.. Would have been more impactful than a dusty Bible verse.
According to Soloviov, the Antichrist builds a cathedral to unite all cults. That, I need not comment on. Like the Antichrist, Adriel writes his own Bible. Shame we never learn more about it.
Soloviov describes the Antichrist's followers as a "nameless crowd". The FBC, and Adriel's followers, match such a description. That being said, they have a great taste for uniforms. He also mentions how the Antichrist's miracles only appear supernatural to people. Use of ArqTech, anyone?.. Besides, it can also be true because Adriel isn't a biblical entity, he only pretends to be one.
Lithuanian author A. D. Jakštas described the Antichrist as becoming incredibly cruel to opposition once masses follow him. It isn't portrayed too widely in the show, but implied pretty heavily, and in more ways than a burning light from the sky. I had to mention one of my own at least once, and without a comparison of the Antichrist to Soviet Russia or bolsheviks. I know why people did so (especially when Christianity functioned as an important part of cultural resistance), but still, it's incredibly hurtful to me personally, to see a concept I admire (the Antichrist) compared to something I despise.
I guess one could wonder if the show's creators knew about such views, given Adriel said something about power being shared by everyone, not hoarded by gods, but at the same time, his actions reflected the hypocrisy of... certain regimes and so-called philosophies. I wouldn't be surprised. They clearly knew what they were doing. Was I upset about it, being a fan of Adriel? Of course. But artists do what they want. I always say that, I must stand by that. Oh, and I'd rather not have arguments about politics with anyone. We're here for Warrior Nun, not that.
R. H. Benson describes a leader who rises above all nations of the world, and who has an incredible ability to manipulate people's minds and lives. That's Adriel. The world flourishss in regards to science and culture. That can be said about the Warrior Nun Universe. The author identifies the Antichrist with the Freemasons. That isn't reflected in the show. But, the show does portray a conflict of Christianity and other movements - both with Adriel, and with ArqTech.
Like R. H. Benson describes, Adriel is talked about by everyone (social media...), many have a good opinion of him even before meeting him. He's charismatic, knows a lot of languages, can be described as an erudite (why does he have a bunch of books in piles on his porch, I'm not sure, but he deserves a Supernanny finger wag for it... At least.) There isn't an episode of like... All countries signing a peace treaty, but it's something I think Adriel would have them do. Again, I think he deserved more screen time. The effect he, and his cult, had on society, deserved more screentime. We only see his followers chanting his name. What other forms of worship does FBC practice? What are their main philosophical and theological dogmas? How to they reflect in daily life? What is written in Adriel's Bible? And so much more.
Adriel obviously idolizes peace, as I've mentioned already. A direct quote from him: "Hasn't humanity suffered enough?" I think that could be from Benson. He creates a new religion. I'm sure Adrielism has it's own ceremonies, feast days... So much potential. Of course, it's new, and it needs better liturgy. A proper hymn or two. Adriel, honey, come on... You had a thousand years. "Ave Adriel, Salvatore Mundi..."? Or something?
Adriel calls himself the Savior. I think the only reason why the show's creatos may not have had him call himself the Alpha and the Omega (the Beginning and the End), is because they are in touch with fandom culture... We all know how these beautiful Greek words have been desecrated in our demented world. We all know... If you don't, I beg you, stat innocent. Stay sane.
Adriel does not desecrate religious sites. But maybe his followers do. I wouldn't put it past FBC, running around the streets with bats. Cultists will be cultists.
I think WN takes place in current times (2000 20's). So, first half of the 21st century. According to many, that's when the Antichrist is supposed to show up. I'm not Ava. I will not make any jokes about the current state of the world.
Adriel certainly imitates Christ enough. His Messiah Classic fashion (which he looks rather attractive in), walking on water... Don't you, Mr. Walks Barefoot In Dead Insect Fountain Water Soup?.. And, not only imitates. He inverts. He builds an inverted temple.
Like the Antichrist according to Spirago, Adriel lets people live how they wish, do what they want (the scene in S2E1 illustrates it well - the one where Vincent "brings a lady home"). Spirago says that the Antichrist will have an easy time fighting Christianity because of godlessness in the world. I think, Adriel has an easy time for other reasons - Christianity has been used in many horrible crimes, and he has many good arguments, even though his "I ask for nothing" isn't exactly true.
The Pope defends the faithful (according to many authors). Which Duretti does, despite all his machinations. I saw some say he cared only for his own power, but I doubt it. Did he care for his own power? Yes. But did he also sincerely saw a threat to everyone in Adriel, and wanted to help others by exposing him? Also yes.
Can the OCS be seen as the religious order opposing the Antichrist spoken of by some?.. I's say so. They are his main adversaries. His main capable adversaries. Despite the irony of him helping create the Order. Now as I mention it, was Areala supposed to be the original Second Beast? Maybe. The only theory I really entertain about the early OCS, is that Adriel was really in love with Areala, and she with him, but she saw him for the... Beast he was, so she sacrificed herself, and her heart, for everyone else. Parallels with The Omen III, huh?..
Adriel has a whole army (FBC), even though his Capital is Madrid, not Babylon. Adriel talks about the tendency of people to worship money, in spite of avoiding the strategy in favor of terror. He doesn't raise the dead (Ava does...), or heal the sick, but he talks about it. His followers being possessed also reminds me of something. I don't remember who said it, yet apparently, the people the Antichrist resurrects are supposed to be devils in disguise.
The moments ifn the show of various screens showing Adriel's broadcast... That screamed Antichrist. And him killing the Pope. Everyone talks about the shot of Vincent putting the Crown on Ava. For me, it's Adriel striking Duretti. That scene makes my heart skip a beat, it's so beautiful. So meaningful.
I didn't go as in-depth as I thought I would, directly mentioned only a few authors... I'm afraid I could talk about this for days. I love to talk about this. Warrior Nun, and the Antichrist. Write me if you noticed something I missed! I apologize for any mistakes I left, and the... Personal bit. But hey... Everything is personal interpretation. Oh, and I apologize if the style I wrote this in is rather horrid. It's supposed to be the "crazy person ranting" style.
If I didn't make it clear enought, I love Adriel.

A snippet from Ch1 my Warrior Nun Biblical AU.
The scene becomes even funnier knowing it's Archangel Michael talking to the Antichrist, not simply Ava and Adriel. Because frankly, it's not a thing I can easily imagine any other version of Archangel Michael saying. She went a long way from the Lord rebuke you, now, didn't she?..
Yes, of course he went to that bar just to get on her nerves. What gets on my nerves? The damn chapter getting so fucking long. I hate writing beginnings, I'm just so eager to work on the good parts.

I am trying to use the actual Palacio De Galiana as a reference to describe Adriel's residence (more of it than we saw in the show), but I'm having a really hard time (I've never even been there after all).
Since Palacio De Adriel is a fictional place, I suppose I might just need to sketch my own plan inspired by the filming location, like I did with St Cartha for my The Nun wip. Which is such a hassle...
Besides, I'm mostly struggling with imagining the inside of the manor.
Which would be located here on the grounds I think:
Tumblr media
Adriel's estate should probably be bigger though, maybe with more buildings, or simply a larger place for monks and priests who live there (Idk, maybe he'd have his... honorable guests stay in the mansion... Villa?). I mean, Adriel's fortress has a whole prison underground. He seems like someone who'd want something grand, not a small cosy cottage.
I have been scrolling Pinterest for room info, but nothing clicks so far.

◇ As trumpets threaten to sound and hail falls mixed with blood, two foes find themselves on an eerily similar path. ◇
