Congrats on turtle for being the first WoF character for me to draw twice specifically for posting
Not entirely sure about this one. I really like the lineart and the designs themselves are okay but I feel like I could have done something more different for the rendering.
Anyways here’s some stuff about these goobers
-Octopus is the “bigwings” (even though Seawings technically do not have bigwings) of the clutch, and typically the leader of the gang with his size and smarts
-Studies architecture, also likes puzzles a lot
-All tribes have some ability to change colors (though, Rainwings are by far the best). Octopus has an unusually high amount of scales that can change color for a Seawing (e.g, he can change his patterns up or change the overall tint of his scales).
-Cerulean enjoys making pottery (an art form not traditionally pursued by Seawings) and, unusually for a Seawing, prefers being on dry land rather than in the water.
-Has a Sandwing BF who was a POW from Burn’s army but is now free. They use there fire breath as kiln for his pottery.
-Fin is the “runt” of the clutch. He is so small that he is often mistaken for being a member of a younger clutch, even by his own mother.
-He has a lot of spunk and sass to him; like a less annoying Qibil. His brothers would always pick on him for being small when he was younger, but he gave that attitude right back.

Admiral my baby sea/ice mix? The cloak is meant to be sealfur because he lives in the northern water and lovesss seals (not pictured are his wings whose membranes are a pale teal)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i am so sorry i forgot to reread the description before going ahead and sewing so the cloak does not in fact look like seal fur

Turtle, you should introduce Tsunami and/Or Anemone to all you're other brothers, or just the ones you like most.

Hey! I was just wondering, what tribe for your Wings of Fire Picrew are you making next?
I was thinking about doing Nightwings or Seawings next. But it's probably gonna be a long while till it's done.

WOF tribe wingspan concepts:
Read below cut for close-ups of the individual wings + the thought process / headcannons behind the design choices: 👇
Tumblr media
Skywing: Huge wingspan to body ratio, meant for catching air current with ease, and soaring great distances, even days on end without rest. It can also assist in billowing fire, mainly from the sheer power & air that flapping their wings can generate. Inspired by seabirds such as gulls & albatrosses, all equipped for traveling overseas.
Tumblr media
Mudwing: Rounded wings to assist in parachuting and carrying more wind under a Mudwing’s muscled & bulky form. Striped patterns underneath wingspan resemble swamp reeds and algae when hunting. Given Mudwings are ambush predators, their wings are inspired by birds such as owls, which despite tending to be larger birds of prey, are very silent predators.
Tumblr media
Sandwings: Coiled wingtips which mimic their barbed tails in flight. They have wavy line like patterns underneath, meant to resemble shifting dunelines or freckled sand spots. Sandwings have the largest wingspan next to Skywings, due to their requirement of flying long distances across the desert. Primarily inspired by vultures, and carrion birds meant to soar & circle.
Tumblr media
Seawings: Fin-like Wings better equipped for swimming than flying. These wingspans are Manta Ray inspired, with dolphin-like tail ends connecting all the way to the wing tips. Depending on genetics, some seawings are born with more shark-like tail ends.
Tumblr media
Nightwing: Sleek & recognizable wing shape, commonly associated with all dragon imagery. Their wingspan is inspired by bats, making them equipped for gripping craggy rock ledges, and blending into the night, since they can easily furl around their body.
Tumblr media
Rainwing: Decorative and frilled wings. Inspired by Macaw/frilled lizards. Their wings mimic the same frills on their necks & tailbase, and can come in a variety of colors & patterns underneath. Stripes, spots, & swirls are all common sights. These wings are meant more for gliding, but also serve simultaneously as threat and courtship displays with the right whorls of color.
Tumblr media
Icewings: Icewings have ridged wings which mimic icicles and shattered glaciers. Their wings feature sharp, narwhal-like spines at the tips. Similar to their serrated claws, they are perfect for stabbing into ice for balance, or spearing seals & fish. They can also hold dragon/prey firmly in place, and easily scewer an opponent in flight if needed.

Tsunami! Had some trouble getting her "canon" colors right because all of her refs on the WoF wiki are slightly different shades of blue.
Tumblr media
[Start ID: A digital drawing of a headshot of the character Tsunami, a Seawing dragon from the book series Wings of Fire. Tsunami is mostly a rich blue in appearance, with a light blue underbelly. She has aquatic attributes like fins on her back, barbels on her chin, and gills. She is smiling with her white sharp teeth visible. Her eyes have white sclera and green pupils. She has two dark blue horns, and her fins have dark blue spikes with light turquoise webbing. The background of the piece is a muted yellowish green, with lighter lines shaped like waves and bubbles. In the upper left corner is a watermark with the username "TheCraftyDragonC". End ID.]

Fun WoF character design thingies for if you want to make an OC
Tusks for IceWings, MudWings, or SandWings.
Brightly colored fins for reef SeaWings.
Silver freckles for NightWings.
Stripes, patches, points.
Faint leopard patterns for SandWings.
LeafWings with wings shaped like the leaf of your favorite plant.
Curly SandWing frills.
SeaWing fins that are so long they flop over.
MudWing horns that curve forward like a bull's.
MudWings with a snout that is lighter than their body, reminiscent of an American black bear.
SandWings inspired by your favorite snake--stripes, scale patterns, bright colored underbellies. You could also use a lizard species. Go nuts!
Scale colors or patterns inspired by your favorite dog coat color/pattern. Merles, tricolors, socks, patches. This would work especially well for SilkWings.
Additionally, SilkWing fuzz in any place you want. Tail tufts, chest puffs, fuzzy manes, puffs on the legs like a poodle, neck collars.
Horse face markings---stripes, blazes, snips, stars, diamonds.
Additionally, dark striped legs, dorsal lines, or dark frills on SandWings, reminiscent of mustang horses. Darker snouts and ears as well.
SeaWings that are light colored and splotched with darker blue and/or green, like a domestic koi fish.
LeafWings with a flower-like growth(s) somewhere on their body. Can be any color and help with camouflage.
Irregular, knotted horns for LeafWings, like branches.
Metallic silver or blue IceWings that reflect nearly all light with a dazzling mirror effect.
Long, thin RainWings that are very flexible.
Conversely: large, solid, muscular RainWings. Uncommon, but possible. Very good at lifting rocks for other RainWings so they can collect bugs to eat.
RainWings with hooks on their wings that help them climb.
HiveWings that shimmer iridescently like beetles.
Pink HiveWings.
SilkWings with exceptionally long antennae. Half as long as their body or more. Bonus if they're feathery.
HiveWing horns that jut out in front like insect mandibles.
Transparent winged SilkWings.
Chimera SilkWings----one wing set that is one color patten, and the other is completely different.
Swallowtailed SilkWings.
Albino HiveWings.
Scorpion-barbed HiveWings. Double tailed HiveWings.
Open ocean SeaWings that are silver like a schooling fish.
SeaWings OR MudWings that are patterned like a lake fish.
NightWings (or hybrids) with gold or coppery stars.

WoF Reference guide - #01: Turtle, Squid, Pike
Preamble
I'm rather fond of the way characters are rendered in the Wings of Fire graphic novel adaptation, so whenever I draw WoF stuff, I like to lean into that style.
A problem I often run into there though, is that while the dragons in the comic are very expressive, members of the same tribe are sometimes difficult to tell apart, especially in close-ups. Reading the second one in particular is a bit of an undertaking, with a lot of Seawings that look very similar.
So to help myself out with that, I've started doing a style guide for my own reference that attempts to diversify the designs a bit while hopefully still keeping the basic principles introduced in the comics. Just a collection of my own headcanons really.
I wasn't really intending to publish any of this, but then I showed some of my friends and they said "This is cool", so... I suppose here we are. I've done about 20 of these by now, but I'm going to have to polish them a bit first so I don't just throw my dirty sketches at people.
Okay, that's probably enough talking, let's show something for it.
Flawseer Headcanon Refs
Tumblr media
Build is somewhat heavy-set/chubby; hates exercise and tends to get second helpings during meals.
Facial structure very soft, round, and smooth; big nose; upper lip ends in a slight point like a little beak.
Eyes are bright, warm, and friendly.
Forehead fins are round with no sharp angles, average distribution of gaps.
Horns are smooth and curved backwards, with a small upwards barb at the end.
Luminous patches in face are polygonal, orderly. Ventral patches are roughly square and relatively large. Patches on limbs, back, and tail are polygonal and tend to cluster together and interlock, like pattern on a turtle shell.
Neck plates angular, slightly reminiscent of turtle shell.
Tumblr media
Very petite and underdeveloped frame; scrawny, light-weight build with barely any fat or defined muscle.
Small head; youthful face; somehow nose is always wet.
Eyes are large; expression usually either guilty-looking or close to bursting into tears.
Horns are nubby and curve upwards, dull ends.
No defined chin barbels whatsoever, but a few nubby points growing out the back of the jaw.
Luminous patches on face, limbs, and back are thick, swirly spirals with splotches dotted around, or small clusters of 2 to 3 splotches by themselves; ventral patches are ring-shaped and look similar to suction cups, tail thus looks like a squid's tentacle.
Ventral fringe is very small and wispy, dorsal fringe made up of small leaf-like shapes that are oddly spaced out.
Tumblr media
Build is somewhat runty and small; lean with wiry muscle; overall reminiscent of a draconic chihuahua and about as noisy.
Pointy face with sloped forehead; furrows on nasal ridge from excessive scowling; jaw juts forward with a bit of an underbite.
Eyes somewhat angular but still open; expression serious and dutiful.
Forehead fins angular; frayed with lots of gaps and blemishes.
Horns are bendy and pointed; smooth but covered in numerous small scrapes and blemishes.
Chin barbels are pointy and sharp-looking, but soft to the touch.
Face and body show a few small nicks and scars everywhere; little cut across the side of the mouth; ears are nicked and frayed. All of these accumulated from training accidents and reckless behavior.
Luminous patches on face and ventral side are small, flecky, like shards of broken glass; patches on limbs and back are large and pointy, shaped like spades or arrowheads.
Ventral and dorsal fringe pointy with small nicks and tears.
And that is it for now. Next batch is probably going to be... I don't know. Webs, Nautilus, and Riptide maybe.

hiiii yeah i've been thinking about my wof ocs once again. Horizon has changed and developed a lot since i first drew them
Tumblr media
essentially, as far as their story goes, they worked for a very dangerous dragon. one who doesn't align herself with any tribe, and is a huge fan of threats and blackmail. Horizon served as a personal assassin for her, taking out important political figures. (and they aren't the only one). they also did some fashion stuff on the side but that's not super relevant.
but when they were tasked with killing the seawing queen, queen Otter, it all went wrong. Horizon became very close with the (seemingly) eldest princess, Urchin, in order to then get close enough to the queen. (also Urchin is a trans guy and Horizon helps him through that but idk how to explain that smoothly so i'm just putting it here.) unfortunately, they got TOO close to Urchin. so when the assassination was successful, they froze when Urchin discovered them over his mother's body.
once returning to their employer, Horizon threw down the queen's disembodied head as they were asked to, but refused to carry out these missions any further. and their employer, terrible as she is, locked them away in her dungeon, tearing away parts of their fins so that the shackles would fit, and only providing them with the absolute minimum amount of water to survive. as time went on, their color became sickly and dull, their scales around the shackles both peeling and flaked. they grew thin.
they do get rescued eventually, but that's a part of the story i haven't quite worked out the details of yet. drawings without text below (ALSO REBLOGS ARE APPRECIATED. AND DONT LIKE WITHOUT REBLOGGING. I WILL SEE YOU)

Triton Seawing light language lmao
I've had this theory/headcannon/idea for a while that, like the Seawings from wof, tritons are bioluminescent
While in bright lights, like the surface during the day, the patterns are practically invisible and don't glow at all, but during the night they seem to naturally illuminate
Of course, the trench which is the equivalent to the bottom of the ocean is much darker than simply the oversea at night, so the patterns only really glow in really really dark areas
And I know that Triton's can speak underwater as if they were above water but I imagine the further down you go the pressure (even though tritons are kinda built for that) messes with your vocal cords and the way the sound travels
So over time, tritons would learn to flash specific patterns in specific orders in order to mean certain things
Maybe if you flare out your fins and flash the patterns across them it could mean "here" or "come"
The patterns around the eyes would probably mean "see" or "watch/look"
I am a firm believer that the crown that Gil has is special to him and him only, but in the case that it isn't maybe illuminating the coral could mean "royalty" or "King/queen" or even "silence"
Though, at the same time, primordial and aquan are both languages kind of built for deep water so I feel like those would work as well
(speaking of which, recently I've been seeing videos of people chanting native or historical or generally really old songs or tunes in other languages, do you think the tritons would have anything like that in primordial? Or even aquan?? And what would the lyrics of the chanting entail? Probably something about the ancient leviathans or the gods and probably the cycle of life and death)
