A Few Ways That Cloudways Makes Running This Site a Little Easier
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/a-few-ways-that-cloudways-makes-running-this-site-a-little-easier/
A Few Ways That Cloudways Makes Running This Site a Little Easier
It’s probably no surprise to you that CSS-Tricks is (proudly) hosted on Cloudways, DigitalOcean’s managed hosting arm. Given both CSS-Tricks and Cloudways are part of DigitalOcean, it was just a matter of time before we’d come together this way. And here we are!
We were previously hosted on Flywheel which was a fairly boutique WordPress hosting provider until WP Engine purchased it years back. And, to be very honest and up-front, Flywheel served us extremely well. There reached a point when it became pretty clear that CSS-Tricks was simply too big for Flywheel to scale along. That might’ve led us to try out WP Engine in the absence of Cloudways… but it’s probably good that never came to fruition considering recent events.
Anyway, moving hosts always means at least a smidge of contest-switching. Different server names with different configurations with different user accounts with different controls.
We’re a pretty low-maintenance operation around here, so being on a fully managed host is a benefit because I see very little of the day-to-day nuance that happens on our server. The Cloudways team took care of all the heavy lifting of migrating us and making sure we were set up with everything we needed, from SFTP accounts and database access to a staging environment and deployment points.
Our development flow used to go something like this:
Fire up Local (Flywheel’s local development app)
Futz around with local development
Push to main
Let a CI/CD pipeline publish the changes
I know, ridiculously simple. But it was also riddled with errors because we didn’t always want to publish changes on push. There was a real human margin of error in there, especially when handling WordPress updates. We could have (and should have) had some sort of staging environment rather than blindly trusting what was working locally. But again, we’re kinduva a ragtag team despite the big corporate backing.
The flow now looks like this:
Fire up Local (we still use it!)
Futz around with local development
Push to main
Publish to staging
Publish to production
This is something we could have set up in Flywheel but was trivial with Cloudways. I gave up some automation for quality assurance’s sake. Switching environments in Cloudways is a single click and I like a little manual friction to feel like I have some control in the process. That might not scale well for large teams on an enterprise project, but that’s not really what Cloudways is all about — that’s why we have DigitalOcean!
See that baseline-status-widget branch in the dropdown? That’s a little feature I’m playing with (and will post about later). I like that GitHub is integrated directly into the Cloudways UI so I can experiment with it in whatever environment I want, even before merging it with either the staging or master branches. It makes testing a whole lot easier and way less error-prone than triggering auto-deployments in every which way.
Here’s another nicety: I get a good snapshot of the differences between my environments through Cloudways monitoring. For example, I was attempting to update our copy of the Gravity Forms plugin just this morning. It worked locally but triggered a fatal in staging. I went in and tried to sniff out what was up with the staging environment, so I headed to the Vulnerability Scanner and saw that staging was running an older version of WordPress compared to what was running locally and in production. (We don’t version control WordPress core, so that was an easy miss.)
I hypothesized that the newer version of Gravity Forms had a conflict with the older version of WordPress, and this made it ridiculously easy to test my assertion. Turns out that was correct and I was confident that pushing to production was safe and sound — which it was.
That little incident inspired me to share a little about what I’ve liked about Cloudways so far. You’ll notice that we don’t push our products too hard around here. Anytime you experience something delightful — whatever it is — is a good time to blog about it and this was clearly one of those times.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Cloudways is ideal for any size or type of WordPress site. It’s one of the few hosts that will let you BOYO cloud, so to speak, where you can hold your work on a cloud server (like a DigitalOcean droplet, for instance) and let Cloudways manage the hosting, giving you all the freedom to scale when needed on top of the benefits of having a managed host. So, if you need a fully managed, autoscaling hosting solution for WordPress like we do here at CSS-Tricks, Cloudways has you covered.

How do you make a blog? I want to make my own blog of my own but I don't know where to start.
Blogging has become an excellent way to share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences with the world. In this digital era, almost everyone has their own blog, and if you're interested in making one, I'm here to help you. I'll discuss how to make a good blog and how to write a blog that is informative and engaging.
Before we dive into the details, let's understand what a blog is. A blog is a website containing written content that is updated regularly. The content can be about anything you want, such as your personal experiences, your passions, your business, or current events. A blog can be an excellent way to establish yourself as an expert in your field, connect with like-minded people, and build your brand.
Here are some essential steps you should follow to make a good blog:
Step 1: Choose a Blogging Platform
The first step in creating a blog is to choose a blogging platform. There are many platforms available, such as WordPress, Tumblr, and Wix. Each platform has its own advantages and disadvantages, so you need to choose one that best suits your needs. WordPress is one of the most popular platforms and offers a lot of customization options. And Tumblr is one of the easiest and self-customizable blogging websites.
Step 2: Choose a Domain Name and Hosting
Once you have chosen your blogging platform, you need to choose a domain name and hosting. Your domain name should be memorable, easy to spell, and relevant to your blog's content. Hosting is a service that allows your blog to be accessible on the internet.
(Also be sure to think of a blog name before doing this step, for example my blog/brand name is 'The Write Advice For Writers')
Step 3: Customize Your Blog
After you have chosen your domain name and hosting, you need to customize your blog. You can select a theme that suits your blog's content and customize it to your liking. You can also add plugins to enhance your blog's functionality.
Step 4: Create Quality Content
The most important aspect of a blog is its content. You need to create quality content that is informative, engaging, and relevant to your audience. You should also use keywords that are relevant to your blog's content to improve your blog's search engine rankings.
Step 5: Promote Your Blog
Once you have created quality content, you need to promote your blog. You can use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to promote your blog. You can also participate in online communities related to your blog's content to gain exposure.
Now that you understand how to make a good blog, let's discuss how to write a blog that is informative and engaging.
Step 1: Choose a Topic
The first step in writing a blog is to choose a topic. You should choose a topic that you are passionate about and that is relevant to your audience. You can also use keyword research tools to find popular topics related to your blog's content.
Step 2: Create an Outline
Once you have chosen a topic, you need to create an outline. An outline will help you organize your thoughts and ensure that your blog post is well-structured. Your outline should include an introduction, main points, and a conclusion.
Step 3: Write Your Blog Post
After you have created your outline, you need to write your blog post. Your blog post should be informative, engaging, and easy to read. You should also use subheadings, bullet points, and images to break up your content and make it more visually appealing.
Step 4: Edit Your Blog Post
Once you have written your blog post, you need to edit it. You should check for grammar and spelling errors and ensure that your content flows well. You can also use online tools such as Grammarly to check your grammar and spelling.
Step 5: Publish Your Blog Post
After you have edited your blog post, you need to publish it. You should also promote your blog post on social media and other online communities related to your blog's content.
In conclusion, making a good blog requires patience, dedication, and hard work. You need to choose the right blogging platform, create quality content, and promote your blog to gain exposure. Writing a blog that is informative and engaging requires choosing the right topic, creating an outline, writing your blog post, editing it, and publishing it. By following these steps, you can create a successful blog that will attract readers and establish you as an expert in your field.

De-Program The Algorithm: RSS is good and you should be using it.
Escape the algorithm, tune your feed and save the world; or, even though it's old and ugly, RSS can make your life better.
We live in a time of algorythmic feeds that distort our perceptions of events, time, and the people that we care about. Non-stop, hardwired access by large corporations into the pleasure centers of our brains have disrupted human congnition to the point where many wonder how we ever found content we liked without having it served up by angelic machines that live in the cloud, accessing us via the little magic boxes that live in our pockets.
There IS a way out of it, though, and it comes from before Web 1.0. It is called RSS, or Real Simple Syndication.
A more thorough explanation under the jump!
In the even older times, Syndication was a word used by old media to describe an article or show that they'd gotten from somewhere else, and were presenting as content to their own viewers. Star Trek, Garfield, and millions of other comics, stories, TV shows found success not in their initial markets, but in the long running and carefully tuned presentation of existing backlogs to interested audiences.
While syndication was previously a method of showing old content to new audiences, RSS is primarily a method of displaying new content in a feed to an audience of one, or a few. You can set your RSS up to have as much or as little content as you wish, mindlessly scraping vast quantities of podcasts and articles, or as a carefully pruned garden, where each entry lives or dies by the pleasure it brings you.
You can even put porn on it. And webcomics.
Youtube is compatible, which means you could bypass any artificial limiting our curation of your subscription tab with it. Tumblr blogs can be RSS feeds as well, as well as most wordpress sites. RSS is usually a defacto afterthought in this day and age, but sites like twitter don't work natively (Thanks Elon).
Really, the biggest killer for me is that I can create not just a video subscription feed that actually shows all of my subscriptions, I can even create several feeds of content based on genre or subject. No longer will my miniature painting videos be swept away in a tide of tech reviews or drama alerts!
There are self hosted options if you have a server or an unemployed raspberry pi, but for the general user, I highly recommend browser plugins like Feedbro, or apps like Feedly. Many of them have paid features now, but don't be fooled. There is always a free way to get your feed set up, and Feedbro works on mobile anyway. Sadly, this isn't something that firefox can sync, but at least you can export your desktop feed and import it on mobile.
