It can be an intensifier, a descriptor, a compliment, a greeting, a disparagement and as a chaffing insult between friends.

Oh, and punctuation.

(NB - if it's a real insult or a threat, that's conveyed by tone, volume and accompanying body language, since the actual vocabulary is often no different than usual.)

As for the other business, @dduane and I were riding in a Zurich tram some 20 years ago when two late-teen / early-20s USian males, either tourists or exchange students, got on board and sat in front of us.

Nobody else on the tram was speaking anything but German, so they started - loudly, in English, and in detail - comparing notes on last night with their girlfriends.

TMI, and then some.

We got embarrassed, not just for ourselves but on behalf of various pink-eared passengers who either knew exactly what was being said or understood more than enough not to need more.

So when the tram stopped at IIRC Paradeplatz and the lads paused their storytelling (I've sometimes wondered why they bothered), I leaned forward and said, in English, "Come on, guys, don't leave us in suspense. What happened next?"

@dduane added, "Yeah, keep going. It's just getting good. Fantasy, but good."

The pair went white and looked at each other, went red and looked at us, then sprang from their seats and out of the tram.

Even though for some reason we were both pretty sure it wasn't their stop...

Remember that story a while back about the cop who was brutally beaten and almost died in a "training accident?" Yeah. He was a good cop trying to report on the bad behavior of his fellow officers and they tried to kill him for it.

I think that people who balk at the phrase "all cops are bastards" might be helped out with "good cops don't last."

Sooner or later, every cop will encounter a situation where they can be complicit or try to do something about it. A good cop will try to do something about it. They will encounter immediate resistance, and will be pressured to shut up and be complicit (whereupon they cease to be a good cop). If they persist, they can expect to be fired, harassed, thrown in a mental hospital, or even directly physically attacked and murdered.

Hell, if they're in the NYPD, after they're done with you they'll probably make a commemorative challenge coin about it.

All cops are bastards because good cops don't last. You are absolutely not allowed to be a good cop.
