I have made some Welsh LGBTQ+ Prints!

P'nawn da! Today is the day I'm finally launching my Welsh LGBTQ+ prints for sale (find them here). Like with my dissertation, they're pay as you feel (min. £2 plus postage) and I can post them to the UK, US, EU and Canada! Designs include the 2017 Gilbert Baker flag with the stripe meanings in Welsh and English, the map of Wales featuring my pride redesigns of the historic county flags of Wales, lesbian redesign of the Cardiff flag and a brand new design featuring 12 pride flags with the names of each in Welsh and English. hey all, I'm writing the introduction to my Ghost PhD dissertation (#ghesis) and I need citations for some things, PARTICULARLY early interviews or early band history.

as an American who’s spent the past 15 years in the UK it’s always been both interesting and clear to me that Ted Lasso, while set and filmed in the UK with mostly non-American actors, is a show made for Americans. The language choices, the references--even many of those made by non-American characters--are all chosen for maximum impact on an American audience. 

never has that been clearer than in this latest episode. Isaac, who we know was raised in London, hears a fan call his best friend what the team later refers to as “the other f-word.” His temper snaps and he leaps into the stands to confront the fan in Colin’s defence. 

it’s a powerful scene and--with an American audience in mind--it does make sense that the writers would choose that word as the one to set Isaac off. It’s a word some Youths have been reclaiming recently, but for American-grown people my age (not coincidentally also Jason Sudeikis’ age), we grew up knowing it as a vicious slur and have a visceral reaction to hearing it. 

British people don’t. They use it casually, in reference to a cigarette. In its longer form it means meatballs. People here are broadly aware that it’s a slur in American English but they don’t feel the impact of that, not the way Americans do. It was years before i stopped flinching every time my coworkers went out for a cigarette. I’ve had gay coworkers who used it (to mean cigarette) without a twitch. Both Isaac and that fan would have grown up hearing it, would be completely inured to it as a word that carries a powerful message of hate. It’s unlikely both that the fan would use the word as a slur and that Isaac would have such a deeply felt reaction to it. 

and honestly? That did take me out of the scene a little bit. Similar to the S1 episode where Keeley teases Roy about meeting in a “parking lot.” 

however, unlike parking lot which has no place in that dialogue, i fully understand the choice of “the other f-word” over a British slur. The aim of the scene was to provoke a visceral response from viewers, to make them want to get up in that fan’s face the way Isaac did. No British word, however more authentic to the setting and characters, would provoke the necessary reaction from American viewers. Call it linguistic licence, i guess. 

it’s very interesting though how Ted Lasso is set firmly in Britain when it wants to be a fish-out-of-water comedy but can’t be so British that it confuses American viewers. A delicate balance. Jokes about biscuits and tea are a-okay but car park goes a step too far. There’s a linguistics dissertation lurking in there somewhere.

Hi, I'm Finn, a writer, medievalist, and all-round nerd. You may know me as the author of The Butterfly Assassin, "that person who wrote the trans Cú Chulainn article", the weird nerd in the Tumblr corner writing excessively long and incomprehensibly niche posts about their research, or something else entirely. I am all of those things! (Well, depending on what the 'something else' is, anyway...)

Currently, I'm a PhD student at the University of Cambridge researching friendship in the late Ulster Cycle (c. 12th-17th centuries). I have an MA in Early and Medieval Irish from University College Cork, and wrote my thesis about Láeg mac Ríangabra, my best beloved. I also have an undergrad degree in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic from Cambridge, and wrote my dissertation about queer readings of Táin Bó Cúailnge, including transmasculine readings of Cú Chulainn.

The Animals We Became (coming 2026 from Gollancz): a queertrans retelling of the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi looking at gender, compulsory heterosexuality, and trauma, through the medium of nonconsensual animal transformations.

To Run With The Hound (coming 2027 from Gollancz): my take on the Ulster Cycle, looking at why Táin Bó Cúailnge is a tragedy and what it means to be doomed by the narrative, but not in the way you thought you were. Featuring a lot of feelings about Cú Chulainn, Fer Diad, and Láeg.

Update. — 27th June 2023.

Happy Pride Month 🌈 to those who have been celebrating. Much love to you all.

It's been a while since a progress update which isn't great from me, but now I'm posting one with a much neater and more professional look. My thoughts are that I'll post these at least once a month so readers are always kept in the loop as I feel like I've kept you all in the dark recently about what’s been going on. Anywhoo…

Firstly, I finished my undergraduate degree! My results that came out confirmed that I'll be graduating. I’m graduating with a 1st which is the highest degree classification that can be awarded in the UK — so, this writer is kinda smart and will be throwing a grad cap in the air — so that's kind of a huge personal accomplishment!

But more importantly, in interactive fiction terms anyway, I finished chapter 10! It's done. She's a chunky chapter that's full of loads of... stuff and drama! There's so much going on in the chapter: angst, comfort, a new character, found family — so you're in for a ride, to say the least.

I made a few changes too. The reader can choose/input their own pronouns, your mc can choose whether or not they wear glasses, there are new graphics for those that play with a black background (shown below!), alongside some editorial stuff — new choices etc. It's now with the beta readers.

On top of chapter 10, there's also Tumblr stuff that will be made available. I've had a cool, chapter 10 sneak peek edit in my drafts that I'll be posting tomorrow. I hit a follower milestone, so when the public update is out I'll be doing a follower giveaway.

Soo, as an overview: in eight months I wrote a 10k word dissertation, bagged a degree, got accepted to do a master's degree, and finished writing a 73k word chapter. So, whilst I hate that this update has been a long time coming, a lot of academic stuff happened in my life which made a lot of things hectic.

I really appreciate you being patient with me. I know it's not easy or fun waiting for wip updates, but there is a Golden one on the horizon and I hope it will be worth the wait.

im 16 and live in the uk, so i was heartbroken when i couldnt come fly to america to see betrayal. but to be honest seeing everyone meet him and seeing how kind he is has cheered me up!! i just really hope hell do another play someday and im worried he wont do another one again or for a while, but at the end of the day i just want him to be happy so ill be pleased no matter what

i am so glad that seeing our interactions from Betrayal brought you some happiness. i’ve said this before but i really tried to bring all the love for him from across the world and give it to him. i wish everyone could’ve been there and gets the opportunity to see/meet him at least once! i felt very honored to have that opportunity, so i tried to communicate just how loved he is around the globe! (i’ll keep my fingers crossed you get to come see him in a show one day — or that he makes his way back over across the pond! you never know!) i hope he’s taking time to rest and spend time with his girls, but doesn’t disappear entirely for too long!

thank you for your kind words about my artwork! they were truly a labor of love. i remember bringing up making them to @ridethecyanide as a bit of a hypothetical, but i am so glad i went through with making them. he is such a genuine soul with such a warm heart, it felt so nice to try to give back some of the happiness he has brought to myself and so many. his reaction and our interaction in general was more than i ever hoped for!!!🥹

i am definitely still planning to convert the physical copies of audiobooks i have to mp3 files to share with you all very soon! i have to get over this last hump with dissertation, but know that they ARE coming!! likely sometime in the summer.

i agree! his voice is so smooth and wonderful, i could listen to him talk and narrate for hours. i love hearing him do different accents and tones within them. my southern heart adores his attempts at country twang, like when he voices the mother in bridge to terabithia! it’s adorable.

how do you survive writing a thesis? my dissertation is due in three weeks and i am losing sleep and also my mind trying to make sure everything is spick and span and going to require as little editing from my committee as possible

Oh my God, this is a question.

How do you survive writing a thesis? When you're three weeks away from the deadline and REALLLLY in it??

Honestly anon, you get up every day, and you do what you can. You accept the comments/feedback you can action this late in the game, and which ones you really can't - which ones are essential, which ones are the nice to haves, and which ones are unrealistic. Which ones are said by your supervisor without them really meaning it, and which ones genuinely won't make a difference to your fucking thesis. And then, you gleefully start deleting everything that isn't essential from your brain and, if necessary, your document. Because now, finally, you truly do not have time.

I'll be real with you, anon, and give you the advice I would give to my past self, that I also know my past self wouldn't ever, ever listen to. I also aimed for no (or as few) corrections (as possible). I didn't want to work on my thesis anymore either. I didn't want to have to edit it. This made it hurt all the fucking more, when I got them and had to do it anyway. I also got minor corrections which..... wooooo!, but it also meant I had less fucking time to do them in, even though it was still work. Almost made me wish I'd gotten major and given myself time (although I'll be real, this probably would've sucked too).

Idk if you're UK or US or European or elsewhere, so your experience and the rules of your institution may definitely differ from mine, but I think the way you get through submission is by accepting This Isn't The Final Draft, no matter how much it absolutely feels like one. Your final draft is the one where, for better or worse, you've been examined and gotten that committee input. Stop imagining the feedback you're heading off at the pass, and instead embrace knowing that the feedback you may or may not get from your committee will in fact set the goalposts for the actual endpoint, and that this really isn't it. Idk if this is helpful, but I too worked slavishly to try and avoid ever having to look at my project again, and then got really bitter when I didnt magically stop any of that from happening, because ultimately, I'm not the person who controls that. I can't see what is or isn't perfect in my project, this late in the game - that's what those fresh eyes are for, and you unfortunately cannot escape them.

I realise I'm telling another fellow academic achiever to forego perfectionism. I realise the futility in that. But honestly? My corrections, to this day, strike me as stupid. There was nothing I could've done in my final draft or my viva to avoid them, which tells me it's extremely unlikely (at least in the UK) to come out with no corrections. This is quite freeing in hindsight, bc if I'd known, I wouldn't have tried so fucking hard to get no corrections in the first place.

If your work is already at no corrections territory, you're there. And if you're not, no panic or magical last minute ass pull at this stage is going to get you there. Horrible, right? But again, also very freeing. Just proofread what you can proofread, format what you can format, get yourself under the wordcount... and then try your best to let it go. This end isn't the end, even if you really badly want it to be.

As for how you survive (less brutal harsh truth version), please just fucking look after yourself!!! The Final Parts of thesis writing are like a really shitty, protracted labour, and this is one of the contractions. It will be painful, but it will end. In three *and a bit* weeks, you won't be here anymore. With this knowledge under your belt, endure what you can, but also accept your limits and make sure it's not only just endurance. Give yourself little treats. Eat a fuck tonne of comfort food. Make sure you do, in fact, get some sleep (full disclosure, I got sleeping tablets prescribed). Touch some grass at some point in the day. Please, don't run yourself into the ground, bc the end of a thesis is a marathon NOT a sprint.
