Coming Up With Plot Ideas

if you have a grand, sweeping concept for a story and want to flesh out your idea, this is for you!

no idea is original - read, read, read! take note of little details you love about certain books and piece them together

conversely, books that you dislike can have promising concepts that you know you could do better

interview your characters! have someone ask your main character/s about their experiences throughout the story, and let them ramble on for as long as they like. this is a good way of filling in the little details between events.

for those who like structure, make a timeline of events. once you have your major plot points in a rough order, make a list of events you need to get from one point to another - it's a good way to ensure continuity and that your plot flows well

and finally, keep a little notebook with all of your ideas. make sure to write everything down, even if you think its stupid or overdone - you might change your mind when you come back to it

a notes page on your phone works too, just make sure it’s easily accessible when inspiration strikes!

New Blog!

I know it's been years since I last touched this account. To everyone that still follows me, I'm so sorry for not being more active! I promise I'll try to reblog some study posts every once in a while and keep my queue up to date.

The good news is that I have another blog, @writewithfire! If you're interested in reading and writing, check it out! I post writing tips, games, and excerpts from my book-in-progress (and I promise I post much more often then on here, lol).

Again, thank you to everyone for sticking around, and I hope to you either here or on my other blog for more creative fun!

Out of the newspaper rolled a gun. It was a revolver, along with a decently heavy pouch of bullets. “You know I don’t know how to use this, right?” “Point and shoot,” he said. “Terrance can give you lessons, but try not to waste ammo, that’s all you’ve got for now, and it’s not like we can get more easily. Not yet at least. That’s about forty shots you’ve got there.

Now, I must say that I dislike romance in general, but I somehow ended up writing some (mostly out of spite just to prove myself that even I, a certified romance hater, can do better tha some proffesional (screen)writers). That being said (I know, an annoying type of confession, sorry, I felt like ranting a bit) , I'm not sure whether the love triangle counts much?? Unfortunately, I can't say much or explain because it would be a pretty huge spoiler. Sooo, yeah - I'm not sure whether the situation would count as a love triangle, but I highlighted it just in case...

And the fight scene turns into a make-out session should be taken with a grant of salt as it mostly serves as a comedic relief. But maybe there are people who will find the scene both funny and romantically (??) enjoyable. Who knows.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Nah

2. When was the last time you cried?

I cried maybe once every few years up 'till 2022, now I find myself crying at the littlest daily thing. It's taking some getting used to.

3. Do you have kids?

Not yet

5. What sports do you play/have played?

I played soccer and tennis for a short period but did gymnastics for thirteen years. I still miss it sometimes.

6. What's the first thing you notice about people?

Their mannerisms. I've got a bad habit of psychoanalyzing people immediately after introductions so I know what to (maybe) expect from them. Pretty sure it stems from my autism alskdjfhskjd

7. What's your eye color?

Gray

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Both! Though I'm a strong believer that a story doesn't need a happy ending in order to be good. Entirely depends on the story.

9. Any special talents?

I'd like to say my writing is pretty nice but I'm not sure it constitutes being a special talent. I'm good at making friends from what I hear, and (in that same vein) building groups and communities of people outta the blue. Does that count?

10. Where were you born?

The golden state herself.

11. What are your hobbies?

Writing (both original and fanfiction), multi-media arts, listening to documentaries and analysis videos...there's more but those are all I can think of off the top of my head.

12. Do you have pets?

Yeah (but it's not a topic I'm ready to discuss beyond that Yes)

13. How tall are you?

5'9

14. Favorite subject in school?

History! Though science is a close second

15. Dream job?

I'd really like to become a marine biologist (specifically an ecologist) but I'm not sure it's ever going to be a viable option for me. I can always dream!

I spent my whole Sunday editing and going through the pages, so this is the from the chapter I last worked on:

“So, what are we going to do?” Nikolas reiterated his concerns. “After all, everyone has to be content with whatever we decide together.”   Everyone stared at Edvardas. The tension was palpable, adding a burden to his shoulders. Edvardas wrapped his arms around Adamas and Danielius, drawing them in closer, and then invited the rest of the brothers in for a group hug. The five of them held each other tightly, as if they had been in a shipwreck. “I am only doing this for you, since you’re a lot more important to me than you will ever know.”

Knowing Your Characters

do you have a cool concept for a character that you want to flesh out?

take inspiration from characters you love! what is it about them that interests you? what makes them feel alive?

character questionnaires! you don’t have to fill out every question if you don’t want to, just pick out the ones that interest you the most

you can even answer the questions as your character to get authentic answers in their words

similarly, let your characters journal their thoughts. with a blank page and complete privacy, what are they willing to divulge? how open are they with themselves?

write them in a different time of their lives - people are shaped by their past experiences. how were they raised? how have they changed?

also, if you have an idea for a big event in their past, write about how that affected them - you'll get a clearer picture of why your character acts the way they do.

and finally, just keep writing them! the more situations you put them in, the better you'll understand who they are

Rules—share last seven lines of WIP and tag seven people. However, since I'm combining multiple tags, I'm gonna share more than seven lines. This excerpt went over pretty well in writing discord I'm in, so maybe everyone else will like it as well

apologies for it being longer than my usual excerpts

“I remember when you took your first steps. You were a year old. I guess that’s common for babies to start walking around, but you were so young. So small. You were holding onto Mom’s fingers as she helped you stand up. You let go and we thought you were gonna fall, but you didn’t. You took two steps. Then you fell. You didn’t cry. You pushed yourself back up, all on your own, and you walked the rest of the way to me. You only fell again when I was there to catch you. Like you knew I would.” 

Riley didn’t look at the camera as he spoke. He stared at something on the desk, barely even blinking. His gaze was blank. His voice stayed low and somewhat dull. 

“You always looked up to me. I never wanted you to stop. I wanted to be the person you looked up to—I wanted to be the person you saw when you looked at me. Do you still see me that way? Do you still see that person when you look at me? Or do you just see me now? Are you still proud of me? Can you still be proud of me? I want you to be.” 

“I remember when you would follow me everywhere. Couldn’t even take a girlfriend on a date without you wanting to tag along. I couldn’t ever make myself say no to you. I got teased for it, for having my baby sister be my third wheel, but I never really cared. You were always so excited to go with me. I liked when you would follow me around.” He shifted slightly, nothing more than a slight tilt of his head, as though confused. “When did you stop? Why did you stop? Did you lose some of your love for me? How do I get it back?” 

His voice dropped even lower and took on a softness that didn’t linger. “I don’t wanna see you get hurt again.” He moved his hands then, nothing more than turning them palmward up and stretching out his fingers while he stared at them. As though seeing them differently than they were. “I still see you as a little girl sometimes in my dreams. I know you’re not anymore. I know you’re an adult now...but...you’re still that little girl with dirt on her face and holes in her jeans. You’re still my little sister. My baby sister. But you’re not a baby anymore. You’re not a little girl.” 

“Mom says you’re majoring in something with computers. I thought you wanted to be a photographer. I guess I have been gone a while. I don’t really know you anymore. I used to know everything about you. All the drama with your friends. I used to know all their names. Where they lived. I used to know how every one of them liked their sandwiches made. Cuz I’d make them for them. But now I don’t know any of your friends’ names.” 

He looked up, back at the wall. “I remember when you wrecked your pink bike and fell off and skinned your knee. You cried. I carried you and the bike back home. We were two miles away. But I remember how you looked at me when we got home. Like I was a god. No. Better. Like I was your hero. When did that stop? You made me feel like I was a hero. Like I could do anything. Fix any problem. Make the world better. Make it safe for you. So you could be safe wherever you went. I’m not there to look after you anymore...I’m not there to keep you safe. But you can look after yourself now.” A small frown furrowed between his brows. “Can you? Can you keep yourself safe? In this world? I know you’re not a little girl anymore, but...but you are. To me, anyway. Maybe you always will be.” 

“I love you. I miss you. I miss the you that I actually knew.” Abruptly, he straightened up and reached out to the phone; the video ended.

They stood in the entrance staring at the scene, horror written clear on their faces. Sage stared down at the body, her breathing calm, face void of emotion, eyes cold and empty. Everyone was silent. Asher warily moved forward; eyes trained on Sage. "Hey," He gently grabbed her arm, pulling her away. "we need to go."
