2024: A Re-Entry to Fandom

I guess this is a thing? (Oh shit this brackets bit was written at the end and I appear to have emotionally vomited an essay. Sorry ‘bout that.)

In late 2023 I experienced a personal tragedy and retreated to where I had always found comfort: books.

I read a series that had been recommended to me before, but I hadn’t had time to read it - The Simon Snow Trilogy by @rainbowrowell and it awoke a dormant-but-never-forgotten love of fanfiction in me.

In my teens and early 20s I wrote a lot of fan fiction on the ol’ FF net, all of it of atrocious quality I’m certain, which is why I haven’t tried to rediscover that account.

Instead I found AO3, and restarted regularly writing for fun instead of for work or study/research.

I didn’t do any summation for 2023 because I think my first fic was posted on like 10 December 2023, but AO3 tells me I wrote 4 works, all SnowBaz, at a total of 55,154 words.

In 2024, I’ve published 5 works, at a total of 94,323 words.

What truly blows me away (and honestly makes me a bit teary) is the 1013 kudos, 100 subscribers (inc 15 subscribers to just me rather than a fic!), and 222 comment threads on my works. 🥹

Published for Erotic Grope Fest, aka Baz’s birthday. A collaboration with @alexalexinii and a story written to enable their amazing art of Baz in lingerie.

Precious to me for not only getting to work with Alex, but also for being the beginning of my relationship with Becky @rbkzz, my incomparable beta who has become one of the dearest people in my life.

On The Rocks, SnowBaz, Rated: E, 74,592 words (WIP)

My opus, as it were. It originated from a fluffy cute prompt of “what if Baz and Lady Ruth were work besties?!” And I came along like “YEAH! But with trauma, exploration of love in mental illness, and alcoholism!”

I began posting it in March and it’s about 2/3 done now. But for Becky it would be both an absolute pile of horse poop, and an abandoned WIP. Instead it has a clear direction and she found motifs that I’d repeatedly used by accident in my drafts and built imagery, greater meaning, and also debated me ad nauseam on my preference for spelt over spelled.

Immune Response, @lumosinlove’s Cubs, Rated: G, 1,421 words

I was a big consumer of WolfStar in my teens and was recommended Lumosinlove’s Sweater Weather and, like many before me, fell in love with the story, the original characters, and ice hockey itself (much to the surprised glee of my Canadian spouse, who for a decade has tried in vain to get me on board. Little did he know the key was obviously gays.)

This is a lil’ slice of life sick fic examining how each of the Cubs responds to getting sick.

I have a lot more unpublished drabbles about these characters and some fics that are being cocreated so stay tuned for 2025?

Preliminary, my dear Basil, SnowBaz, Rated: T, 1,494 words

A gift fic for @martsonmars as part of the Carry On Discord’s Secret Snowflake Exchange.

Among their suggestions was “Sherlock AU, but not BBC Sherlock, 19th century Sherlock” and it hooked me with the idea that Baz would absolutely fancy himself as Sherlock. I actually sketched out a plot to SnowBazify 4 of the Holmes stories, so maybe 2025 will see them unearthed.

There is one other published fic I worked on this year, but as a beta rather than a writer for @swoopswrites @rsbigbang piece Class A which was super fun to do (and got me to watch a great series - The Gentlemen on Netflix) and Swoops has a fantastic mind so I’d encourage you to to check it out.

Finally, I have always been a writer rather than an artist, but I do enjoy drawing, and the need to upgrade my iPad for work arose and so I also tried my hand at drawing again for the first time since I was 17 or so.

In order from the first one to the most recent one, the lil scribbles I did this year:

Stitches and Sentences Roundup 2024

Thanks for the tags on your writing round ups @run-for-chamo-miles, @drowninginships, and @emeryhall! I just got back from a weeklong trip and instead of doing laundry, I'm joining in on the roundup fun.

FIC I moved from lurker to active fandom participant this year with a bang. I posted my first fic ever for EGF and have basically been writing or posting non-stop since then. I wrote/co-wrote 5 fics this year and clocked in at 101, 725 words.

Kill Em With Kindness - rated T, 6.5k, Watford-Era, getting together fic

When no one seems to care that Baz is sad, Simon steps in to help. The only reasonable explanation for all Simon's kindness is that he's trying to kill Baz, right? (My most popular fic as measured by kudos.)

Knock Your Socks Off - rated T, 4k, Watford-Era, 7th year fic

Baz steals Simon's socks. Simon blames the sock monster. Chaos ensues.

The Eternal Life of Baz Pitch - rated M, 42k, Addie LaRue AU, a truly epic romance

Told in two alternating timelines that span from 1700s Hampshire all the way to early 2000's Washington, DC, this fic follows Baz as he spends centuries searching for the love of all his lives. (This was the fic that convinced me I could write long and holds a very special place in my heart. Is it angsty? Yes. Is it some of the most beautiful prose I've ever written? Also yes.)

The Boy Next Door - rated M, 47k, and they were neighbors AU, a coming of age romance

When Simon moves in with his gran, he decides to befriend the mysterious boy next door. He changes both their lives in the process. (My most popular fic by literally every other measure.)

The Reason for The Season - rated T, 1.6k, text fic, co-written with @thewholelemon

Dev and Niall make a list. Holiday hijinks abound. (A bday gift for @mooncello)

ART I do not currently have a great way to track my dolls and searched my Instagram to do the math, only to realize I hadn't posted every doll I made either! (If anyone has a good art tracking system, I'm open to ideas.) If my count is correct, I clocked in at a grand total of 35 dolls this year, including:

The picture below shows my earliest dolls, where I was still experimenting with style and form. As you can see, many of them are quite flat. (Fun fact: All of these dolls--including their clothing--were made before I owned a sewing machine.)

Going 3D was actually an accident, but we have the Watford Baz and Simon below to thank for it! After committing to 3D dolls, I kept evolving my pattern---improving joints, proportions, and adding details like ears!---until we reached my most current iterations.

Now every doll has their own special pattern that takes into account their canon proportions, where available. Notice Baz is tall and slender where Simon is extra fluffy!

I did not include any of the dolls I created for COC 2024 since I assume everyone has seen them already, but I linked the master post in case you missed a day.

Finally, in addition to dolls, I also created 2 plushies (a merwolf and a bunbaz) plus 12 finger puppets this year.

It's hard to quantify dolls like fics, especially since almost every doll before COC did not have a dedicated tumblr post. However, here are some fun art stats:

2024 WRITING ROUNDUP

I was tagged by @faketrex and @alasse9 (thank you both so much!) This is going to be pretty wild, but this is my first year doing this!

JANUARY-APRIL Nothing, I wasn't writing in fandom yet. MAY-SEPTEMBER This Is More of a Comment Than a Question (RWRB, 94k) Or: Alex is the publicist for Mountchristen Publishers, and is stuck on a two-week tour with their best-selling, but frustrating, author Henry Fox. OCTOBER If You've Got It, Haunt It (RWRB, 5.1k) Or: Alex is a scare actor at the local haunted attraction and continues scaring this one guy who should absolutely not be there (but keeps coming back?) NOVEMBER-DECEMBER ??????¿¿¿¿¿¿

Life (mostly work) has really been a nightmare and cutting into my creative brainspace—despite having ideas I want to work on!! I don't know what 2025 will bring, but it will bring something. It's also weird to look back and see that the summer was literally me knocking out 23k+ words a month for Comment/Question and posting as I finished each chapter. What a time. No wonder that Halloween one-shot for flufftober was a fever dream. I'm not even sure how I managed it, but glad to have that chaos unleashed for seasonal consumption. Being in fandom this year has been such a pleasant gift. I have made so many wonderful writing friends, discovered new authors and fics, and just generally been inspired through the people I've been surrounded by. To many more words in 2025 ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Highest Hit One shot: I don't have one posted from *this* year but Worthwhile Reward from last December comes in at 101. This one is Rugan x Tav where Tav gets the drink she was promised at the Elf Song.

Amazingly grounded and poignant work that takes place in the Rugan cut-content AU. Octavia (Tav) runs into Rugan at Elfsong only to find him a lot more troubled than when last they met.

The first in a series of character defining dalliances for Rugan. The exploration of his first romance and how it would shape him.

I was and forever will be so touched Dust decided to set this in the NT universe, and I hope I'll be able to do Olly some justice!

A fantastic Salazon centered story, the narrative is shared between him and the POV of a very sheltered Partriar's daughter by the name of Rosafieri. Rosa is both infuriating and endearing in her naivety and the perfect compliment to Sal.

God and Monsters also by dust

The threequel to Aqua Vitae. Set post-game, Octavia (Tav) and a broken Rugan embark on an investigation for the guild while studiously avoiding talking about their feelings.

The Red Right Hand by @pentuppen

Yvie St. John is a firey medical assistant that, thanks to the reckless and selfish behaviour of her mother, finds herself the target of some various dangerous loan sharks. A chance run in with our favourite Zhent simultaneously ruins her life and offers her an opportunity to get everything she's ever wanted.

Smut:

The Inkskin Pact by @littleplasticrat

A Rugan o' Clearlight story, a little exploration on one of his various tattoos and how it is very beneficial for a Zhent Tav.

A Snake in the Garden also by pentuppen

Rugan collects on a debt anyway that he can, only the token he's taken isn't traded for coin but for a night with an extremely talented tiefling courtesan.

The Perfect Mark by @luvwich

What if instead of encountering a heroic Tav, Rugan ran into a rather unscrupulous Dark Urge? One who doesn't fight her violent tendencies but instead finds a perfect opportunity for them in an unknowing Zhent.

Writing Goals for 2025:

New Works:

Untitled One-Shot B! B is a bit different in character and trajectory but it's fun to write and its a bit of a collaboration so I hope to wrap it up soon.

—New Things I Tried: I did ffxivwrite for the first time, and it was a ton of fun! I've done a prompt/day challenge before, but this was the first one where the prompts are not known before hand. I didn't do all days, but the ones that spoke to me, and it was great! it was my most productive month.

I also wrote explicit m/m for the first time in To the Victor, the Spoils (FFXIV Magnai/Hien, explicit). I can't believe I did before, but I haven't. I was quite pleased with it!

—Fic I Spent the Most Time On: The Lovers (Meryta/Tansui, explicit). This fic is listed as "relationship talk" in my tracking sheet, and it's something I worked on intermittently from January to May - and it's been in my mind longer.

It was really important to me to write how Meryta's and Tansui's relationship changes. It's a physical fling first that grows, and I wanted to have an honest and mature conversation about exclusivity that worked in the world. And to stay true to their cheeky and teasing nature. I'm really pleased with the Xaela lore I weaved in along with both how intense Tansui feels about it, their different approaches to a relationship (Meryta is demi-romantic) and also their playfulness (it started as a silly thought, which is how they always behave in my head). It meant a lot to me and it took a lot of work; I actually went and wrote part of their conversation from both their POVs to figure out what was going on.

—Fic I Spent the Least Time On: Stamp, which I've not even counted in my ao3 count, since it's so silly, not canon, and not going on ao3.

For published fics, Casual Fun, since it was finishing something that was a few years old for "finish your WIP February" and I just cleaned it up and wrapped in up in 3 days (short for me!)

—Favourite Thing I Wrote: This is a very hard question! I did love writing The Lovers, and my Hien/Magnai fics, and all my Meryta/Tansui fics - they're just ughghgh to me.

but I think my favorite things was actually Choices, which is a Meryta introspective Shadowbringers piece - it's short and deals with the lack of agency and the Exarch and all the feelings she's going through in the story. I just really loved fleshing this out.

—Favorite Thing I Read: I'm going to be extremely selfish and say Familiar Shores by @myreia, your wrote my blorbos and you wrote them so well and I'm just SO happy reading it.

otherwise, I read many great things - I love all of what @myreia writes, and I had other fun things I read, like see me bare my teeth for you by meepfather, such a lovely and wellwritten piece and I love the aura head canons.

I also re-read @ellstersmash's nothing on my tongue for the umpteenth time, a perpetual favorite

—Something I Finished: I tend to write one-shots, so I finished many things! I love writing one shots, and it's much easier for me to write a moment than a story arch. I started out 2024 by finishing Solace and Breakfast, which really was the groundwork for all my Meryta/Tansui fics, and the productivity I had this year

—Miscellaneous Highlights: My word count was pretty typical for a "productive" year for me, and I'm glad I found footing in writing ffxiv and Meryta - along with Hien and Magnai. I have not been writing much since my interest in writing Dragon Age tapered off, Iwyn settled with Solas in my mind. I was excited to pick up writing more again!

I also tracked my writing and tried to write every day. it did fall apart in the summer, and after October, but overall it's a good goal to have, and I'll pick it up again (next week. hehe).

I'm also really happy to revisit my Wayfarers for a small Wayfarer event, I love them and the story so much!

Lastly, I was very happy to write a small piece for @myreia, I do love writing gift fics, but it's also a bit nervewrecking writing other people's characters. Meryta-as-an-adventurer was fun to visit and how she'd see Aureia!

—Writing Goals for 2025:

I want to write more Meryta. I love her, and there's lots to fill out. I started and outlined a multichapter of her time on the Steppe in Stormblood - as this turned out so important for her. I do hope to get to write more on it.

I also have more Tansui and Meryta ideas, and I am SO close to finishing Endwalker - I want to flesh out how their relationship develops during that time. in addition, I think I'll try to do @yearoftheotpevent! I'm excited for the prompts.

I would love to do ffxivwrite again, and I'd love to revisit my Wayfarers. Then I will probably play veilguard, and who knows if that will make me return to Dragon Age.

—Final Thoughts:

I really like being a multifandom, and multiship writer. While right now 80% of my brain is Meryta and Tansui, it's so fun to have other things to explore. I have a half-written estimeric piece, I have more Hien and Magnai ideas...

I think I'm still struggling with writing a rarepair and ffxiv's lack of writer engagement, but I will carry on and forward and remember the joy writing bring me in it's self - and the dear people reading my writing 💚

2024 was the most amazing creative year for me - I’ve met so many wonderful people on tumblr, discord, in the comments sections of my fics 💕

I’ve written more than ever before in maybe my whole life haha, and I’ve grown so much as a writer so thank you so much! If amazing people hadn’t have commented and kudos’d, I’d never have written so much, so eternal thanks are there

A huge part of that growth has also been my fantastic friends who I bounce ideas off endlessly (thank you, American friends for letting me check words all the time - turns out Flip Flop is universal but lorry isn’t, who knew??), and my wonderful beta readers, @ink_stains and @thesinwyrm who take my garbled nonsense and help turn it into something (hopefully) enjoyable!

Fic I spent the least time on: Cake! By far the quickest fic I've ever written. I knew I wanted to do something with baking and some romance in the kitchen...pre-game, btw! Little did I know that the Crow actually cooked.

Favorite thing I wrote: I would say all of them. I've always had a bad habit of never finishing any stories of mine as they just drop off, but my new approach has helped me with that.

Bedtime Stories for a Demon - by rookinthecrownest!! Of course she made it to this list, I love this fic so much. Rook tells Lucanis and Spite stories from her childhood. I love her Rook and her creativity with our fairytales and putting them into the DA universe.

Two Crows in a Fishbowl- by Antivan_Rook. Rook has her own demon inside her helping with saving the world. I've read some really interesting stories where Rook isn't the only one possessed but this one stands out as something different.

Hey, little songbird by gradevus. It's a cute little short story of Rook getting pregnant and then having Viago freak the fuck out. I loved it; it was so cute. There are not enough post-game fics yet, so I love the most.

Writing goals for 2025: I will finish my series with Daisy even if it kills me. I want to move on post-game and write fics about her crazy children but it's been rough getting there.

highest hits and kudos: My most popular fic this year is the very first fic I posted, In Your Orbit with 2,453 hits and 235 kudos.

new things i tried: Everything! In Your Orbit was my first fic, a losing game was my first time writing a fic in a day, grasping at straws (among other things) was my first attempt at smut, Brick By Brick was my first attempt at noncon, A Heart's A Heavy Burden was my first collaboration, I could go on.

fic i spent the most time on: the real answer is my fic for the Hue zine Pigment of Imagination which isn't posted yet. For fics that are posted, The Spider and the Fly took a while for corafest, while hell is a teenage girl is my only ongoing fic, 3 chapters over many months.

fic I spent the least time on: Either a losing game or I'm already gone which were both written and posted in a day.

Highest Hit One-Shot: Don’t Talk About After. Which I guess makes sense, since it was written and posted first and before there was much in the Neve/Rook tags.

New Things I Tried: Writing fic again. Engaging with fandom again. Like, in a dedicated fashion, beyond occasionally randomly reblogging things I found amusing to my main. When I say I was in fandom retirement, I really didn’t do much in fandom spaces, other than a couple (non-DA) RPs for a really, really long time. Like a decade. I’m really glad to have reengaged. Everyone has been awesome.

Fic I Spent the Most Time On: The long fic I’m working on that may end me, because planning is hard. Otherwise, probably I’m Fine, of my posted stuff.

Fic I Spent the Least Time On: Don’t Talk About After, for sure. I finished the game, felt like I’d been hit by a train, and wrote it in one fell swoop.

Favorite Things I Wrote: I am very torn between Fifth Date and Tempting Fate. So….both? Both. Both is good.

Favorite Thing(s) I Read: I’ve read so many good things, it is genuinely impossible to pick one, or even several. I wouldn’t know where to even begin. I’ve been enthralled with the stuff you all post in response to @hyperions-light and @thedissonantverses various prompts and challenges. Best problem to have.

Outside of DATV, I’d have to go with: Love Song for the Admiral, which made me fall in love with a pairing I hadn’t even thought of in DAI. My original love, the X-Men fandom has The Early Years by Lelia Burke. For original fic, anything @hawthornetaylor puts out, but especially the Superpowered Love series. Can’t recommend any of them highly enough.

Writing Goals for 2025: Manage to write this long fic. It’s simmering in my brain, won’t leave me alone, and so even though I’m nervous (it’s been…a very long time since I attempted something that wasn’t a one-shot) I wanna do it.

New Works: I’ve got…six? One-shots fully drafted, and one more in process at the moment. All Neve/Rook. And then the longer one I’m outlining, same romance, same universe as the one-shots just…not a one-shot.

2024 Writing Roundup

i was tagged by @cuprun! thank you so much for the tag, reflecting on this past year's writing was a treat

i posted a total of 39 fics this year, which i definitely think is the most i have ever posted in a single year. not all of its good, but im glad i actually got back into the groove of writing somewhat

FEBRUARY

all the same people who scold you (dont deserve to hold you) • sid/geno some of these fics im really going to have nothing to say for them because they were either written for someone else as a prompt or were apart of a fic challenge, so it's not like i put a lot of thought/effort into them? for these first two fics, they were a part of a much bigger fic that i knew i was never going to finish, so i edited them so they'd be able to work as standalones.

thank goodness for the gossip that gets us through the day • sid/geno another standalone that i cut off from that much bigger fit. i love exploring the way a family has to deal with rumors, especially about parentage, and i felt like this series in particular was a good one to do it with.

MARCH

drooling and waiting • sid/geno this starts the first of the prompts for mpreg march! not a lot of creativity to be had this month imho because i was given a prompt and just wrote something for it. writing pregnant g masturbating was very fun though

idol • jagr/kris no one else seemed like they were going to write jagr/kris, so i took advantage. i love sleazy jagr taking advantage of kris' starstruckness.

and its like the fog has lifted • sid/geno, jake/tristan more baby of mine, but i wanted to look at the future. jake growing up, having his own family, some of the stressors that'd happen. was v happy with this one.

imma mess up (oh!) • ricky/petey i need silly ricky/petey in my life i swear!!!! its the only fic in the tag which is a damn shame bc theyre so cute and work so well

sweet and condensed • geno/mario, sid/geno this is by far my favorite fic i wrote for mpreg march. sleazy mario fucking geno, geno being manipulated to come to america, sid not being able to get too close to geno because he wants to fuck him so bad. just, hits all my buttons.

for as long as you'll need me (i'll be here) • nolan/goldy nolan/goldy my beloveds!!!! i had to write something for them during this too, and what better than steppign up? i wanted this to be so much longer, but unfortunately i ran out of time.

APRIL

leon the second • leon/connor the first of my locked tomb au!!! i have written parts of the other (there was going to be a total of nine fics) but my mind got distracted and i have yet to finish another. leon the second was really fun to write though, so i hope people enjoy it as much as i do.

still you take up my mind • sid/geno this was a fic that had been sitting in my wip folder since contractgate and i finally got the inspo to finish it bc i decided to fully go in on the manipulator/asshole sid part of it. im not fuilly happy with how it turned out, but im glad that i was able to finally get it out of my wip folder!!

felt like a new man • willson/sonny this fic is still insane. i still cannot believe Sonny Gray Himself went into the locker room between innings and stripped down naked and changed into a new uniform because he was That Superstitious. so ofc i needed to write handies for it

looks good on you • nolan/goldy one of the many prompt suggestions from lucy!!! just some good old tender goldynado during a season from hell

burning beneath my skin (awaiting your touch) • burly/donnie inspired by another video!! its one of burly chasing donnie around while he's mic'd up and donnie stubbornly refuses to say anything. ofc smut must occur.

all you have is your fire • nolan/goldy this was originally supposed to be a longfic to get elliott into baseball, but i couldnt do it :') so some vague dubious consent + heat sex had to do

The Knife - The wounds on Lady Catelyn's hands turn sour, so Theon Greyjoy takes the assassin's knife to King's Landing instead. Theon's main skill has always been complicating other people's narratives. Updated through chapter 5 wherein Ned orders Theon to visit a bunch of brothels. (Theon Greyjoy, Ned Stark, ensemble)

i feel like i've spent my whole year writing, but i also know that i've spent months without doing it so i can't say how much it was month by month. but i posted three fics this year so like. that's an achievement!

January:

Of all the things Dean expected to find when he came back from the bathroom break, a folded piece of paper with "hey, if you’re not gay, my friend thinks you’re cute. here’s her number 316-557-9608 (and if you’re gay, here’s mine 316-997-2018)" written on, was not it. - Or the one where Dean organises a dating contest because he's bi and can't decide between two options.

September:

I Had Some Time (With You) - Supernatural, 23.9k, E

It's 2005 when things go to hell. Well. They go to hell for everyone except Dean, ‘cause he was ready for it. Well. He was ready for the apocalypse, not for the gorgeous man who fell into his life, quite literally. OR A Destiel rewrite of Bill and Frank's love story as shown on HBO's The Last of Us episode 3: Long Long Time that uses elements of both universes.

Alex’s journey of self discovery started one random night five years ago, when he was scrolling his favorite porn website to relax after midterms. He chose a video with the preview of two guys in the threesome category, thinking nothing of it, and came so hard he thought he was going to pass out. The threesome didn’t happen, the girl just sat there looking at the two guys going at it, just like Alex did. After that night, saying that the tall, blond and gorgeous actor with a fucking sinful shoulder to waist ratio didn’t do it for him was a complete lie, so maybe, maybe, Alex could be excused when he freezes up when said man - even more tall, blond and gorgeous in real life - stretches a hand toward him and says “I’m Henry, Pez’s ‘best mate of honor’, as he says.” with his perfectly infuriating British accent. — OR: Henry is a porn star, Alex is a fan.

December:

Fill My Stocking - RWRB, 6k, E

Alex has spent the past fifteen minutes talking with David about his favourite treats. Not that the dog answered, but Alex was undeterred and kept going, uncaring that Henry had asked him to give him an hour and then he’d join him in hanging up fairy lights and mistletoe everywhere. Very well. If Alex wants Henry’s attention, he'll have it. It's probably not what Alex thought he’d accomplish with his little scheme, but it's a compromise between Henry's needs and Alex's wants, and that's all that can be done. OR: Alex wants some attention and Henry has to get creative.

i posted 62.406 words this year, and written many more. i'm fairly new to writing, so this is a real accomplishment for me. my biggest goal was to post a fully finished chaptered fic, and i did! then i started a series, and wrote something shorter than 7k, and i have so many ideas for future fics that i genuinely don't know where to start. i hope i manage to post at least a couple next year!
