hey! i hope you are having a great start to the week!! <3 what are your top tips / general tips on writing within a dystopian sci-fi universe ??

Hi! I’m super late but my week has been great- I hope you’re doing well anon!

I’d say my top 3 tips are:

1) Look at historical events and seek out patterns. For me, I loved History class, so when we were studying 1920s America and the Great Depression I took elements of the contrast between the extreme wealth of the twenties and the poverty of the thirties to create a rich/poor divide in my novel. I’m also super interested in the French Revolution which has helped me a lot.

2) Identify tropes in your genre- then decide if you think it’s positive or negative. Positive? Use it, tweak it to fit your story, make it your own! Negative? Avoid that shit.

3) Remember that just because you’re writing a dystopian novel, or a fantasy saga, doesn’t mean there has to be CONSTANT action- I made this mistake a lot. Take your time with your plot, allow the tension to brew, the world to build and avoid hitting your reader with a gunfight every couple paragraphs.

I worked at the library today, and this is my working space! I had a migraine today, so at first I wasn’t sure I was going to get much done. But because of some social outings, I’d fallen behind on my type word count. Thankfully, I had two hours of dictation to type up. I got through a little over half of it, and I slammed my word count goal today!! I even finished a lot earlier than I thought I would.
