TommyInnit’s Dream SMP Finale Summary
It was Hannah and Bad’s idea
This was Tommy’s splash text
Tumblr media
This was someone’s first dsmp stream in Tommy’s chat
He started farming as soon as he logged on, like always
Tubbo got in a boat and span around again. Tommy used autotune to sing ‘you spin me right round’
Tubbo nearly shot Shroud
This is what How To Sex says
Tumblr media
Tommy and Tubbo blew up the Hotel which also resulted in McPuffy’s getting blown up and Puffy was shook
Tommy set shroud free
I skipped over most to the stuff with Dream but Tommy was given op and he spawned ghasts on tubbo and Sam
He went to Techno’s house and found a Cat disc in one of his chests. This broke me.
Tommy spoke about how logsted felt really grungey and different to the rest of the server because of how there was nothing there
George nearly slept through it
In True dsmp Fashion getting the end portal to work was scuffed
Callahan kept spawning withers in The End
Tubbo got the final hit on the ender dragon
Tommy and Tubbo met in vc2 at the bench and listened to music
Tommy has an irl ‘your tubbo’ compass
Exile was one of his favourite arcs
His favourite quote is ‘I have The Blade’
His only question for us is if we have ever sat and chatted to our friends about it
Tumblr media
This server has been my hyperfixation since the beginning of 2021. Unfortunately I joined ag the end of the ‘golden age’ as it were. But I’ve made hopefully lifelong friends through this stupid block roleplay, and the characters and story mean the world for me and will forever. I know this fandom is going to get smaller now. I know people will move on. But I think I’ll be here for a few more years.
Dream SMP, thank you for helping me fall in love with stories again. Thank you for helping me grow in my own writing and in my artwork. Thank you for being here when I needed you, thank you for getting me through these last few years. Thank you for giving me characters I could love and relate to, who feel more real than anything else. And thank you for introducing me to creators I will forever love.
I’m so glad I was here.
o7, everyone.

Years and years of work towards the Abraham Accords and impending normalization with Saudi Arabia--a stepping stone on the way to tangible progress in the region--was just obliterated overnight because certain journalists across the world could not stop themselves from tripping over the corpses of butchered Jews and all the people who actually suffer in this conflict while on their way to receive the Word of God from genocidal terrorists who oppress and murder their own people.
This has nothing to do with the IDF, who are no more flawless or immune from criticism than any other organization, especially one with the responsibility of prosecuting war. This is about the historical double standard from some of the same people in English-speaking countries who would never accept a narrative report from other terror and/or hate groups with question. Apparently it's better to signal as loudly as possible what sports team you're on than engage in any serious wartime journalism, lest you make the mistake of humanizing Jews and Israelis and god forbid treat us equitably.
(I should add-- Iran and its proxies may still have been able to derail the normalization process even in the absence of any Western reporting at all. I don't want to over-ascribe importance to certain political players while ignoring others just because I don't speak their language and can't access their untranslated media. I'm just bitter that journalists at major papers in the West have played directly into their hands once again with zero regard for how it breeds anti-Semitism; consequences they will never have to face.)
Of all the things that have been damaged by this atrocity, at the moment I would worry the least about the normalization trends. The four Abraham Accords countries were still aboard after the big blow-up in May 2021, Jordan has been on through the Second Intifada, Egypt across both of them. Saudi Arabia was willing to come aboard this year after all of the above. Israel's actions in Gaza so far have not been a category different from what we have seen in the past. And if anything, the Saudi government has gotten a clearer view than ever at what an Iran-sponsored proxy death squad is able to do, so they quite likely still want a partnership.
If you look back through my posts of the last year, you'll see I never discussed the talk of Saudi normalization. That's because I wasn't sure I wanted it to happen now. Yes, it's always good to show Palestine dead-enders that the time for wishing is over and they need to just accept and deal with Israel. But the current Israeli government did not deserve to be able to claim Saudi normalization as a reward. They could hardly normalize while Israel was BDSing itself to stop the judicial overhaul. I actually would not have minded if Saudi Arabia had trolled Israel in the end, saying "we were going to do this, but you're too racist, it's postponed until you do better." That is NORMAL DIPLOMACY, carrots and sticks, and no country in the world is too good to get it.
As ever, the various antisemitic fascist militias of the Middle East have not changed any of the underlying facts or dynamics. All they can manage is to kill Jews. This time, they killed more than usual. We can see how proud they are.

A bright representative of Leningrad nonconformism
Kryakvin Yuri Dmitrievich (1948-2021). Valaam foal. 1979. Oil on canvas.
In the lower right corner is the author's signature and year.
Yuri Dmitrievich Kryakvin (1948-2021) - Leningrad painter, graphic artist. Honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2015). In 1964, he entered the Art School (LHU) named after V.A. Serova, however, in 1966 came into conflict with the management of the school, as a result of which he was expelled for "unworthy behavior". After that, he completely went underground. He did not join any art groups and refused to participate in apartment exhibitions. In 1968, he made a trip to Georgia, where he met the artist Bubnova, Lado Gudiashvili, Paranjanov and other figures of Georgian culture.
The artist's work was significantly influenced by the discoveries of the Russian and foreign avant-garde, primarily the figurative language of Kubofuturism, which affected the plastic solution of a series of compositions related to the theme of music, as well as portraits and original genre improvisations addressed to a wide range of phenomena of everyday life. He was fond of avant-garde jazz (Coltrane), had an acquaintance with the jazzmen of the Leningrad jazz club "Kvadrat". Jazz and music have become one of the constant themes of creativity.
In the summer of 1968, defending his creative freedom and having no means of subsistence, he laid out his works on the windowsills of the Book House. Half an hour later, a police car arrived, the artist was taken to the police station and released after drawing up the protocol. A few days later, I repeated this action. From 1968 to the spring of 1971, he repeated such actions several dozen times, showing his works at the Book House, in the underground lobby of the Nevsky Prospekt metro station, in the Artist's Shop store, in the kindergarten in front of the Kazan Cathedral and near the Lutheran Church. Each such show ended with a visit to the police. Inevitably came to the attention of the security authorities. During one of these shows, I met A.G. Ender, who introduced the artist to the environment of Leningrad collectors and introduced G.D. Kostaki. In 1970, he went to Moldova to participate in an exhibition in Tiraspol, which was closed two days later.
From 1972 to the early 1980s, all the life and work of the artist were connected with Valaam. During these years, he spent most of his time on Valaam, only occasionally coming to Leningrad. On Valaam he paints portraits, makes genre sketches, creates picturesque paintings. In 1978, he created a series of illustrations for "Russian cherished fairy tales" by Afanasyev. In 1989, he created a series of portraits of people close to him of the theater - Faina Ranevskaya, Evgeny Lebedev, Kirill Lavrov and others. In 2008, on the 90th anniversary of Georgy Vitsin, a monument to the actor was erected in Zelenogorsk. The author of the monument was Yuri Kryakvin.
The works are in the collections of the State Russian Museum, private collections in Russia, Germany, Belgium, Finland, the USA and France. Personal exhibitions were held in Dusseldorf, New York, cities of Japan, Finland, at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg (2014).

The End of the World
First posted: October 6, 2019
Focuses on: Bruce Wayne & Alfred Pennyworth
Tier: Closer to the bottom on all metrics because no one values Alfred.
This is my “behind the scenes” series where I indulge myself horribly by annotating my fics. Link to the fic itself above. Thoughts below the cut.
The Whumptober fics of 2019 continue apace, this time with probably my quietest fic of the year, because everyone says they love Alfred and yet no one seems to want to read about him. Fools.
When Bruce was nine, the world ended. Not in the same way it had when he was eight.
Please know that I don't even have to remember writing this fic to look at these two lines and know that what happened is my brain gave me a banger of an opening line and then immediately went "... wait."
Because I have to be correct and of COURSE the true world-ender was his parents' death, but also this needed to be, too. So then I had to spend another couple paragraphs explaining how and why so it all made sense, just so I could keep the opening line.
The engine rumbled soft and low in a way that was pleasant, and the sun was warm on the leather seats, and Bruce was tired from following Alfred through the grocery store.
Cars are so comfy. I have so many vague and indistinguishable but nice memories of just chilling and daydream in the backseat of the car as a kid. Not a Mercedes like Bruce (cue slight panic from me trying to figure out what Alfred's errand car of choice might be) but still. Samesies.
The car had flipped, rolling over once and then nearly a quarter again before rocking back to rest on its wheels.
Super frustrating to read my own writing, see what I was going for, and also be able to tell that that was inspired BY something... and I don't remember what. Like I KNOW that I was watching something, brain went "Yoink that for a fic!!" and I did, but I can't remember where from.
Shock someone pronounced, which seemed wrong. This felt nothing like touching a doorknob with socked feet. But then, he’d thought that the last time someone had said the same thing. The scratchy gray blanket around his shoulders was nowhere as nice as Lieutenant Gordon’s jacket.
I love playing with language, especially through super-literal kids like Bruce. I get to have fun with words and then make it sad for people. :D
He didn’t remember the ambulance ride, other than that it was loud and a lady with close-cropped hair like lamb’s wool held his hand the entire way. She sat next to him, both of them in squeaky purple seats with crisscrossing seat belts across the chest, while her partner monitored the lady in the stretcher opposite.
I am baffled by this paragraph because reading with 2024 eyes, I would say "Oh, I pulled this from that 9-1-1 show!" because how else would I know what color the seats should be and why would I describe an EMT somewhat similar to Aisha Hinds' character?
Friends, I did not watch a single episode of that show before 2021. I don't know where I got any of this. What scintillating insight I give you in these BTS posts.
Feeling Alfred pull from his grasp had been a true shock, like sticking a fork in a light socket, a blazing force that cut through the fog. He had been convinced as surely as any nine-year-old boy could be that if Alfred left his sight, he was never coming back.
I'm pretty sure some time before this we'd been talking in the group chat about Bruce's attachment to Alfred as his one remaining adult. This fic partly came from that. Poor Bruce has so much trauma from being an orphan and I wanted to, like, just skim the top layer of that and to play around with some of that tight trauma bond a little bit. Alfred is the butler and Alfred is his only adult and Alfred is it now. They're all each other has.
Bruce hadn’t screamed when his parents were shot, and in the days and weeks that followed, his grief had leeched away his speech until he had been left mute and numb. He hadn’t screamed when he was eight, but when he was nine, he had raged so loudly that his screams drowned out the chaos of the ER. . . . Alfred! Alfred! had ricocheted off the scuffed white walls and bleached linoleum floors. Bruce’s one word, his only word in over a year, ALFRED! And it had done him no good.
And THIS specifically is what I wanted to write toward. This right here.
Bruce was no longer nine.
Listen, when I figured out where this fic was going, that I would be able to explore not just what happened to Bruce when he was nine but also link it back to his ADULT SELF? I felt godlike. As far as I can remember, this was NOT planned. I just figured it out while writing.
Their waiting room was an actual room, a closed-off little pocket of private space rather than the larger undivided area that was the hospital’s true waiting room.
Usually when I write hospital spaces (like in Emergency Contact), I just write the hospital I used to work at, because it makes it easier for me to see the space and also to know I was getting at least some things right. I couldn't do that here, because it didn't make sense for a celebrity family to sit in the public atrium where my mom waited for my grandmother to get out of surgery. So I made it up whole cloth. ✨fiction✨
The nurse, a broad man with a goatee and kind eyes, had sat with him for hours.
Modeled after my old ER coworker, Banksy. 🫡
Off-white walls and patterned floors, the lingering funk of pee and vomit blanketed with chemical cleaners, stainless steel and faded hospital gowns.
In the ER, you can add coffee grounds to the list. For scent absorption. Fun fact, just for you. See, these BTS posts are educational after all.
“An accident,” Bruce repeated patiently. “You fell and I didn’t catch you.”
ALSO HAPPENED TO ME. I didn't fall, I fainted, and my cousin went to catch me and MISSED. Thankfully, I didn't break my arm, but I DID go face-first into the curb. I was NOT checked for a concussion.
“Like the Sixties have come ‘round again,” Alfred answered promptly, making Bruce laugh.
imo, if your Alfred doesn't have a sense of humor that he's willing to use, you're doing it wrong.
A cool thing, this one ended up getting translated into Vietnamese!

Baby Army and Jikook enthusiast here. I wanted to ask about the Harry Styles concert. Hobi, Jimin, Tae and Jungkook went together. But the only clips circulating are of Tae and Jungkook holding hands and dancing.
Ordinarily I wouldn’t look at that as anything important because it wasn’t as if Jimin wasn’t there (and ofcourse assuming that Jikook are/were secure boyfies). But then, there has been a lot of interaction, or say, more interaction between Jungkook and Tae than there has been between Jungkook and Jimin. And I’m talking publicly made available content, including Bangtan content.
Isn’t there a possibility, even a remote one, that Jikook aren’t boyfies anymore? That they are just good friends or very close friends who once dated? I wouldn’t say Jungkook moved on to Tae because I don’t think the latter is gay but perhaps, Jungkook is moving on from Jimin? Or trying to?
Hi anon.
My personal feeling is that Jimin and Jungkook are very happily committed to each other. But you must remember that they are in a closeted gay relationship. Now more than ever with the political backdrop of their country and the impending military service they have to be incredibly careful.
But we do still get the pleasure of seeing them together, and particularly around the time period of the concerts in 2021
I am linking in @kanmom51 masterlist from the BTS concert of the time period they went to the Harry Styles concert and you will also find masterlists from the other concerts too. Please take some time to read them and other Jikookers blogs and see if you see what we see.
For me they were all incredibly cute during the Harry concert. Tae and JK were singing their hearts out like good friends having a few drinks at the concert of an artist they enjoy listening too. The interactions between Jimin and JK were more intimate and typical boyfriend behaviour, sharing a drink, Jimin putting his arm around JK whilst swaying in time together to a song, Jimin whispering something in JK's ear after a Harry fan came out at the concert, only for JK to quickly wave his hand and shake his head and for Jimin to give a cheeky smile and an endered head pat to JK. What were you suggesting Jimin 🤔🤣
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we know how the head pat is the go to for Jimin when he is either endeared by or consoling JK
Tumblr media
For me there isn't a possibility that they have split up, these two are a few years down the line and have settled and are more confident in their feelings for each other.
Please remember this is a private relationship that we have been so so lucky to be allowed a glimpse of when they want us to, and right now they probably still want us to l, they may want to shout it from the rooftops, but they can't. They have to be safe, they have to keep those they love safe.
Lets wait and see what post military service brings but for now enjoy reading some blogs and making up your own mind.

LU Sexuality Headcanons
For Pride Month, I want to share my sexuality headcanons for the LU boys.
Sky, Time, Twilight, Four, Wind, and Legend are bisexual or biromantic-ish(?), possibly asexual(?), but none of them have put any thought into what their sexuality is, and neither have I.
Wild is asexual bi-romantic. Don't have a really concrete reason behind it.
(Okay, I do. I once read a great fic on AO3 between 2019-2021 where it turned out Sky was the only straight person and everyone else was on the ace spectrum, and he learns there's nothing wrong with being ace. I believe Wild was asexual bi-romantic in that fic. I couldn't find it when I searched, so if you know where it is please tell me!)
Hyrule and Warriors' sexuality are the only ones I feel strongly about, which are aroace and gay respectively. My reasonings behind these choices are the same for both.
I think it fits their personalities.
It's an incredibly inconvenient sexuality for them to have and that's hilarious.
More in-depth ranting below
Let's start with Warriors cause it's easier to explain.
Congratulations Cia! You got one of the few incarnations of the hero that isn't even attracted to women! Even if Zelda wasn't there, even if you were the last woman on Earth, you would have no chance! (Telling her he's gay wasn't the war-ender Warriors hoped it would be.)
Imagine, there she is in her sluttiest outfit, and Warriors is drooling over Volga and fucking Ganondorf because Nintendo finally let the G-man wear his hair down and he's the hottest he's ever been! (until TotK)
Lana is... better. The room becomes instantly awkward whenever his sexuality is mentioned in her presence, but that's bearable.
What's not bearable is that he's still a ladies magnet. He's Mr. Helen of Troy, and all the ladies want a piece of the booty that launched 1000 ships. Warriors, meanwhile, grits his teeth and tries to be as polite while turning them down. He can't tell them off because, of course, his actions and reputation have a huge impact on the war effort. He hates it. Being Mr. Helen of Troy doesn't attract many cute guys.
Every time someone calls him a ladies' man he wants to scream.
Meanwhile, Hyrule is the Link with 2 Zeldas and was kissed by one of them. He's also aroace.
In Zelda 2, Hyrule is kinda sorta prophesied to be the next great king of Hyrule. Even though not everyone knows about that, he still holds the Triforce and defeated Ganon, so he has some political sway whether he likes it or not. There are 2 problems with this:
He's not related to the Royal Family, so he'll have to marry into it.
There are technically 2 possible heirs to the throne: the Zelda from the first game and Zelda the First, who Hyrule saved from her eternal sleep in the second game.
Zelda the First's claim over the other Zelda is a little shaky, since royal succession doesn't usually consider what happens if an ancestor from 100s of years ago comes back to life. While the first game's Zelda has a strong claim, who gets to be queen is a little ambiguous.
However, given that Hyrule is expected to be king, whichever one he marries will automatically have a better claim to the throne. But there's a 3rd problem:
3. Hyrule is aroace and isn't interested in marrying either of them or in having a romantic relationship in general.
While yes, living in the castle would be safer for Hyrule considering the cursed blood thing, he isn't really interested in settling down with someone. While the Zeldas are "understanding" of Hyrule's feelings, they would really, really like their political standings to be resolved before the nobles and the court do something stupid.
It's a love triangle but the romance is replaced with politics and love doesn't factor into it. It's terrible and I love it.

For the mun from a curious anon: What got you into Minecraft askblogging of all fandoms? Is it an interest in a certain type of Mob? Inspired by a veteran mcaskblogger? For fun/curiosity? Or something else? Thank you!
Well.. It started back in Middle School for me!
I had taken an interest in Minecraft as a kid, and upon looking at fanart I inevitably stumbled upon the askblog fandom. Seeing Endy and the others for the first time sparked an interest for me! Though I didn't make an askblog back then, I did make an Enderman OC named Skai, and had a lil' mock "askblog" via a notebook and asking my friends if they wanted to ask him anything! (I also did this with non-MC OCs, lmao)
While he's not an active character of mine anymore, he still lives on in a way, as Ammo was my method of 'reincarnating' Skai before his story became a little more developed (albeit my continuous hiatus doesn't show it that much)
Here's the Ender himself <3
Tumblr media
Fast forward to 2021, and my interest in delving back into a bit of nostalgia sent me back into the askblog side of Tumblr, where I saw an ad for the MC Askblog Discord server. An opportunity to meet some of the artists that I had looked up to in Middle School was a click away- but I didn't have an actual askblog.
So Hider and Spooks were created! And thus I was able to delve into the server and further into the community. Albeit it was initially for a chance to talk to my childhood inspirations, I had been given a different outcome- one I wouldn't trade for the world.
I found myself within the midst of a welcoming and stunning community full of talented artists and blooming stories. I grew genuinely invested in my characters and began to toss together a story for them (as messy as it was at the start ^^") while becoming engrossed in others' tales and characters. I met new faces, talked, theory-crafted, laughed, drew, roleplayed, and watched as my art improved alongside so may others. I had made a cozy spot in this fandom, one that I continue to enjoy dearly.
Not only that, but I've become surrounded by cherished friends and memories alike from my stay here, and I look forward to meeting them all in person one day! Heck, maybe one day, I'd become the same inspiration to somebody else...
So I'd say I wound up here from a mix of several factors! Inspiration, love for the silly 'lil Minecraft mobs, storytelling, art... A little bit of everything, really.
I hope my answer is sufficient, and I want to thank this fandom and community for being so kind hearted and welcoming! I look forward to continuing to make my place here <3
- Luci
Some bonuses for this long read:
My first drawing of Hider! Drawn on February 5th, 2021. Damn, Hider's over 2 years old now!

And the first concept drawing of Spooks! Made on the same day <3

Timeline + Fanfic name
I’m working on a fanfic where after Grian escapes the watchers they take in Timmy and attempt to make him Grian, this post is just going to give it a name so I can tag posts in order for people to find the stuff more easily + timeline.
The official name is... “Our many eyes” will this stay? Probably not, but I need something to tag.
The fanfics timeline is in order with when videos were posts by each hermit, aside from when Grian appears in Hermitcraft due to him starting the series before ending evo - so I just said he started a year late, still in Season 6 just closer to the end.
September 2018; Grian goes to fight the ender dragon and never returns
December 2018; The evolutionists are forced to flee the server, Jimmy stays behind to hold off the watchers
September 2019; Grian crash lands on Hermitcraft (does not line up with actual timeline)
June 2021; Pearl finds Grian on hermitcraft and joins him
November 2022; Timmy appears on the Hermitcraft server
So based on this timeline the fanfic will take place in season 9, Timmy has been missing for 4 years, and Pearl reunited with Grian 1 year ago.

A collection of screen captures from the past two years that I've been playing.
April 2021 - Above is my first real base (besides the little dirt hole I had while building the light house. )
It was mainly a 'beacon' for new people to get to safety after spawning. Our spawn was very dangerous in the beginning. There are a few others that share the server, although they weren't bitten as hard by the Minecraft bug as I was.
Seed: -11434095 ( Bedrock 1.17 at the time)
Tumblr media
Oct 2021 - After exploring the world for a bit, I found a nice area near an ocean to settle. Of course I built a second lighthouse (this time with wizard tower reference and tutorials) and much later the a dripstone and a mob farm.

Now basic explanations are out of the way. I'm just dumping the rest of the screen captures.
Tumblr media
March 2022 - First wings.

June 2022 - The Amethyst house. Has a tunnel that leads to two amethyst geodes. (Reference used, but I'm unable to find it. If it looks familiar please send a link.)

Games Finished in 2022
I'm going to put most of this under a read more, basically I'm going to write quick description of literally everything I played this year (including a bit from December 2021) all in one post. I'll make a separate one for demos I played as well as anticipated games coming in the next couple years. This is generally in order of completion, though a few entries may be slightly scrambled in the midpoint as I added some retroactively during periods where I forgot to update or played multiple games in the same time frame. Not everything I played was from 2021/2022, there's plenty of stuff I just finally got around to this year.
Daemon X Machina (2019): Weird Armored Core-ish mech game, I kind of hated the story and characters, totally lacked depth in ways that would have been far more interesting with more competent writers given the fairly simple premise. Solid, though mech on mech combat was a bit of a slog sometimes especially by the end game where it just felt tedious. The final boss is horrendous and soured my overall opinion of the game. I did not bother to 100% this game, far too tedious achievements.
Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knight (2021): Fairly fun metroidvania, the bosses are great. It definitely draws a lot of inspiration from Momodora and such. Exploration is a little slow given the scale of the world, and it's far more combat oriented > puzzles. Still, the boss rush got a good amount of my time. I 100%ed this game.
Slay the Spire (2019): I've been playing this game since 2019 and 100%ed it last year, but I finally managed to beat an Ascension 20 run with every character this year, so I'm including it on this list. idk what to say about this game other than its probably one of my all time faves.
Inscryption: Kaycee's Mod (2022): The base game is fantastic, and honestly was my Game of the Year for 2021. This mod is more of the base game, though elaborating further would spoil the main; I 100%ed this mode, it's quite good, and compliments the base game nicely.
Death's Door (2021): A nice little game with less substance than I'd have liked, combat is fairly simple and puzzles also leave a bit to be desired. Its aesthetic design is very good though. I liked it enough to 100% it, though I had quite a few issues with it, definitely lacked a bit of substance. Minimal in some not-always-great ways.
Binary Domain (2012): What a ride. Janky arcade cover shooter action with a bizarre and charming cast of characters and story. I liked it a lot.
West of Dead (2019): A very mediocre game, honestly, but something about it was exceptionally gripping to me despite its jank. It has a really nice combat flow room-to-room that takes some getting used to, but has a lot of superfluous mechanics that lack a lot of depth and variety. I'm hoping they succeed with the Hellboy game they're working on.
Cave Crawler (2022): A fun little free to play platformer that takes about half an hour to finish at most. Not too special all things considered, but neat!
Gloom (2017): A weird indie side scrolling action roguelike clearly inspired by Bloodborne with a bit of visual inspiration from Limbo. Very RNG dependent for some of its tight time based achievements and such, overall quite janky, but it held my attention for a solid week or two.
Elden Ring (2022): What can I say, it's the Game of the Year, by many people's standards. It had me mesmerized by its world and scale so many times I could hardly believe it, it's sort a game you could only dream of, made real. I do have a few small complaints regarding its overuse of some assets in ways that its scale is a bit of a negative factor in retrospect (also just a handful of bosses have some design I dislike; it's a bit loose in ways something like Sekiro isn't, for example, which still remains my fave combat From has ever designed) but all considered, it's still exceptional. No game is perfect, but this was damn near close.
Neon White (2022): Honestly, this may be tied with Elden Ring for Game of the Year for me. I'm a defender of its cringe, which, all things considered, is a small portion of that game. The gameplay itself is something I never knew I wanted; single player arena shooter time trial speedrunning. It's like the Trackmania of FPS games, and good lord it is something special. I 100%ed this game and got every red ace medal.
Dicey Dungeons: Reunion DLC (free, 2022): An absolutely exceptional send off to an already exceptional game, the music for these episodes absolutely slapped, and the remixed mechanics for each character are maybe my favorite in the entire game, really the ultimate example of how to give a game a proper last hurrah.
Spelunky 2 (2020): I've been playing this game since 2020, but I just wanted to note here that I finally 100%ed this game, excluding having completed the Cosmic Ocean (of which there is no achievement for). Anyway, Derek Yu is a genius and that can never be stated enough, this game sincerely is a masterpiece.
Into the Breach: Advanced Edition DLC (free, 2022): A game I had already completed the year prior got an extremely good and well rounded patch with new enemies, mech squads, etc. I went in to 100% the new achievements as well as get a Hard Mode 4 Island clear with every squad for the hell of it. Also one of my favorite games of all time, I can't say much else about it.
Cult of the Lamb (2022): An incredibly addicting colony sim with roguelite-inspired elements, the rogue aspects left a lot to be desired to be quite honest, but the gameplay loop surrounding the cult carried it. If it weren't for that I'd have been disappointed honestly. The best analogy I can think of is ordering from a restaurant, getting a completely different order, but eating and enjoying it anyway. Not what I expected, but still enjoyable.
skorpulac (2017): a cool short retro inspired platformer by the guy who does Spelunky's music, a very interesting atmosphere with a fun little twist at the end, I loved it.
Super Hexagon (2012): A game I played back in 2012, but finally decided to get the 60 second achievement on the final mode. Peak "flow state" video game.
Carrion (2020): A neat and relatively short metroidvania-ish monster game. It's fairly linear despite its seemingly open ended nature of the hub, I enjoyed it but was never really totally enthralled. A very solid "good!" - the best compliment I can give it to its aesthetics and its very good design and guiding the player on where to go with environmental design while hiding its general linearity. Never in your face while guiding you on your way, devs could learn a thing or two from this game about how to lead players in the right direction without explicitly telling you in text.
Hand of Fate (2015): Truly the only game I hated this year, and I could tell it wasn't for me in just half an hour. I expected card game, I got mediocre action game hidden underneath a ""card game"" veneer. Simply not for me; it felt very dated, despite having a neat presentation.
Environmental Station Alhpa (2015): From the Baba is You and Noita developer, I basically took on this game as "homework" before diving into Noita, and I was not disappointed. Maybe one of the best Super Metroid inspired games that truly understood what made it good, and honestly, probably surpassed it, and that's not even a hot take. This game has absolutely absurd depth, underneath the skin of a fairly normal metroidvania is a monolithic highly esoteric cryptographic puzzle that can add on at least triple the time to complete, and the platforming/boss challenges do not mess around either. Comprehensive and deep, Arvi Teikari is, much like Derek Yu, basically a god damn genius of this craft.
Noita (2019): I'm not quite done with this game, but I'll add it here, since I've given it a long enough rest - I've only scratched the surface of what there is to do in this game, which might be saying too much. This game is loved by masochists and hated by people with little patience and/or imagination, I think your average person would consider it a wacky little game that is fascinating and frustrating in equal measure. For weirdos though, everything horrible about this game is good, actually, and everything good is sincerely genius. I fall in that camp.
Bananner Nababber (2022): Just an absolutely unhinged and beautifully ugly retro inspired platformer boss rush. It's free. If hitting your head against a wall to fight 6 3 phase bosses on par with some of the hardest NES/SNES hellspawns sounds fun, this is for you to waste an afternoon to.
Wow! This got so long I had to add a break!
Dead Cells (2018): This game just doesn't stop getting content, and I'm far from finished with it, but I have to add it to this list simply because I did much more this year after putting it down for a while. It's got ANOTHER expansion/crossover with Castlevania coming next year which is wild. Anyway, I like this game a lot even if it ends up being a bit of a visual clusterfuck at times and is a little oddly slippery with some progression systems I don't like as much as other games, but it's... cool. It's good. Not my favorite game or anything, but I like it enough to keep coming back a couple times a year for a few weeks at a time.
Spelunky HD (2008): Yep, I'm adding this one to the list, I decided to go back to this version to 100% it, though I still have a couple achievements to get, so expect this game to come up again in 2023 as I get around to that (or not, I dunno). Everything I said about Spelunky 2 applies here, except like, a decade earlier, slightly less refined but no less genius.
Tumbleseed (2017): Someone made Ice Cold Beer a video game except about a seed climbing a mountain, and it's good. It's frustrating, but it's good, and it feels good to get good. I still need to finish up a couple achievements that I got so close to finishing, but then life got in the way. I will return! Underrated as hell, though admittedly obviously niche and not very appealing to normal folks.
Gunfire Reborn (2020): I played a lot of this last year, but I also played more of it this year. It's fun, but more fun with others. That said, 80% of my time in it is solo to wrap up achievements, of which I'm fairly deep in on, but still have plenty to go. I have not paid for the DLC. Anyway, I like it, the guns feel good. It's like, if Borderlands were a short 1 hour run roguelike and instead of cringe dialogue it's just funny animal people who don't say anything except "hyaah" and such.
Rogue Legacy 2 (2022): It's more Rogue Legacy, but unlike Nioh being for better and worse, it's all for the better. Vastly improved visuals, movement mechanics, enemy variety, progression, etc. While I ultimately dislike the not-very-rogue persistent upgrades, it is what it is, and they make it work. The challenges are hellish, and I still have some to wrap up, I'd like to 100% this game next year.
Devil Daggers (2016): I have not done everything I wanted to do in this game quite yet, but I'll add it to this list regardless. I'll say it how I summarized it on a Tweet; this game feels like a creepypasta about a haunted arcade game that takes over your brain and forces you to keep playing as it gets weirder and more grotesque as it goes along, except it actually exists. Horrific Overstimulation. I still need to get around to Hyper Demon, I'll see that one in 2023, which just seems like this game on crack (I hate to have written that, but it's true).
Monolith (2017): What an absolutely underrated gem of a game, it's a more shmup-y Isaac. I love it. I wish I could say more, it's just cool as hell. Sometimes that's all that needs to be said.
Vampire Survivors (2022): I don't know how to describe how I feel about this game. It's amazing, but it sucks. I don't even feel bad being low key a hater; it lacks a lot of sincere depth, it's repetitive and the challenge absolutely melts away once you're given access to meta tools, but I can't deny that it's addicting as all hell and charming in almost every other regard. It does a handful of cool things here and there, and is almost taking over the world. I refuse to call things "overrated" on principle, but this is damn near close. The devs are good people and they deserve every bit of praise they get, but man did this game start to wear down on me in my attempt to 100% it.
Floppy Knights (2022): As of writing this, there's still one more piece of promised final DLC, so expect to see this on my 2023 list as well once I complete that. This game is good! As with quite a few others on this list, I wrote a lengthy Steam review about it. It's a really good puzzle tactics game! Emphasis on puzzle - this will leave a lot to be desired for RPG tactics fans, which initially disappointed me, but grew on me as I started to understand it as an open-ended puzzle game. The challenge modes (with set decks you're forced to play with) really nailed this aspect and were honestly more fun and rewarding to complete than the base game which ultimately ended up a bit cheesable by the end (albeit the way its progression works, was always balanced, so I have to give it credit for that) Anyway, soft recommend for PUZZLE fans who happen to also like turn based tactics. I would tell RPG tactics fans to give it a look too, but to expect a generally slower paced and more methodical game style.
Nioh 2 (2020): It's more Nioh! For better and worse. What an absolute nightmare of a grind with totally superfluous loot treadmill mechanics that it absolutely does not need, needlessly complicated marginal stat gains across weapon and character skill trees, armor, weapons, and trinkets, etc. etc. But at the end of the day, the core mechanics surrounding its combat are absolutely exceptional, the boss fights are some of the most fun in any action game of this style I've fought, and that's even in competition with the Souls games that inspired it. It's SO fun, here's hoping Wo Long is at least a little less grind-y than this.
Umarangi Generation (2020): Retroactively one of my top 5 2020 games probably, it's got a sincere understanding of what makes the PS1 era visuals and level design that inspired it good. Mildly janky in a few areas that don't affect the overall experience, this is one of those games I'd recommend to any visual artist honestly. The photo editing is really well implemented. If I ever get around to the DLC, I'll include it in my 2023 list.
Higurashi When They Cry Chapter 1 (2006/2015): Felt the need to get around to some Ryukishi07 work in light of the announcement of Silent Hill f. Gripping and chilling, honestly, immaculate pacing and sense of tension. Admittedly required putting on some blinders to its grosser elements (mostly in the, y'know, teenage boy protag surrounded by girls premise and the weird writing that often leaves me wishing to NOT be in the protag's head) but aside from that it's still really good. You just have to be an anime trope immune person to enjoy this sort of stuff. I'll give a full opinion on the entire story as I complete it in 2023.
Mortal Shell (2020): A very souls inspired short game that was thoroughly enjoyable, save a few oddities with its character progression and are designs. There were a few stand out positives, and just a couple glaring negatives, but overall I like it a lot. I still have the expanded roguelike "Virtuous Cycle" mode to sink my teeth into, so I'll update my thoughts in 2023 on that.
Good lord, I wish there was more I could say about each game (in some cases there was, in which case I put up a likely private Steam review for, sorry)
