It' Fine Press Friday!
Coat of Art
Wisconsin artist Mark Brueggeman's work, which I have had the privilege of encountering during my internship in Special Collections, captivates with its distinctive artistic vision. This unique piece of art is a portfolio of broadsides inspired by the poem, A Coat, by W. B. Yeats, the first Irish Nobel laureate in literature.
The portfolio was published in Amherst Junction, Wisconsin, at Brueggeman’s Atelier Vermeil Studio in 2016, printed in an edition of 20 copies with Optima 24 type and intaglio and relief prints on Riverpoint paper, a Strathmore paper made at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where Brueggeman taught for many years.
Mark Brueggeman’s work spans a variety of media, a testament to his versatility and skill. His repertoire includes printing, pastels, intaglio and relief printing, letterpress, and drawing in ink, graphite, and pastel. He earned his undergraduate degree in drawing and painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and his graduate degree in drawing and fiber sculpture at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
Written in 1912, A Coat reflects a period in Yeats’ life when he was attempting to change his writing style. He experimented with various techniques and approaches, constantly striving to enrich and expand his writing. As a result, his poetry underwent numerous transformations, ultimately leading to the creation of his unique voice and style. When it comes to the poem’s meaning, it could refer to anything from Yeats’ own writing style to the futility of war or perhaps something else entirely. One of the most extraordinary things about poetry is that it is open to interpretation, allowing each reader to find their own meaning in the words.

i recently came across a dune edit and can pretty firmly say that the consensus via accounts i frequent abt the movie solely being: walking, dream sequences and soundlessness is a gross underselling of its beauty, conflicts and technical prowess, but regardless of how captivating the movie is i'm bothered by how it claims to be a critique on orientalism (that apparently reinforces it, this is what happens when minorities are spoken for) while once again co-opting very specific struggles and culture contexts and making them palatable through conventional figures.
now resistance is championed, now middle-eastern inspired garb is beautiful and unoppressive, now ppl care abt minorities, and its like if you're not representing the truth and reality of the struggle you have essentially commodified, then what exactly is the point of smth like dune and its adjacent anti-elitist projects?
esp when there is a real life struggle as we speak being undertaken by these very same ppl and the world is seemingly divided on their humanity, and then one of the movie's leads is comfortable dehumanizing them as if their lives are just theoretical.
i like dune, its why i decided to watch it, but in a movie abt orientalism why are those subject to its affects seemingly not in the room? i want to see the ppls whose cultures are being drawn upon depicting their cultures.

I love a good traditional amv but I look at fan edits like sorcery. Had I the resources at my disposal I could crank out a decent amv with windows movie maker. But I watch an edit and cannot fathom the many moving pieces... they enchant me. There's smth about cramming so much cinematography into a 7 second clip. And then adding some hyperpop type shit in the background. I will watch that shit 20 times in a row like a snake charmed
