Ooh Old Fires Burn Out sounds interesting!
[From this WIP ask game]
Thank you for the ask!
So, Old Fires Burn Out is an idea I had for a Feanor returns from Mandos but it goes kind of wrong fic. And it's probably going to be an Outside PoV fic too!
The fic based on the headcanon, that no one is deliberately held in Mandos for all eternity but can go as soon as their spirit is stable enough to be harbored by a body and they themselves want to go because they are definitely also not forced to leave either. Same thing goes for Feanor here.
When he comes back from Mandos though, and shows up at Nerdanel’s door sometime in the early morning, there is something… off about him. She notices immediately, which is why she doesn’t just kick him out again. He looks very miserable and behaves very much out of character, even just with the first words he says to her. (Those being “I’m sorry.” and “I was wrong.”).
So basically as the title says: Feanor’s inner fire has burned out and while that allowed for his spirit to settle back into a body; it also means that all his best and worst qualities that once burnt with a very bright flame are just a shadow of themselves. Yes, he is still temperamental but he is more easily calmed. Yes, he still gets emotional but it's not loud and fierce, it’s a lot more subdued and happens far less frequently. Yes, he has complicated feelings about his half-siblings but he doesn’t lash out against them or threaten them anymore. He actually asks for forgiveness or at least a truce and he admits his guilt to the Teleri without being asked to do so by anyone. He does not try to reclaim the throne and he does not show up at Earendil’s door to demand back the Silmaril. He lets himself be argued with about topics he never allowed an argument to happen over. And so on.
There are only two things in which Feanor is still the same Feanor: 1) his love for his children and (former) wife and 2) his desire to craft and create - and he definitely returns to that immediately.
When asked about his change in demeanor he only ever gives vague answers and half jokingly asks in return, if they are really that desperate to have the old Feanor back (which arguably no one wants but this new one is still very unsettling). I have an idea what caused the change and it’s definitely related to the fates of the Silmaril and the personalities of the Silmaril bearers but I’m not that far with either planning or writing yet lol
Also there's going to be a lot of him being fascinated/irritated with the way Arda now looks (i.e. sun and moon) and maybe I'll have him meet the Hobbits. Overall, maybe it's a fix-it, maybe it's a 'fuck we have to accept that death changed this person we thought to know very well so much that he's basically a stranger now' kind of fic. Idk yet.
I only have the beginning of the fic written and I’m not very happy with it but I still consider it a WIP because I have plans for the writing in itself as you can see. It’s definitely on my agenda to be turned into a proper fic once I’m done with my exams for this semester!

Hello again! Thank you so much for answering my last questions - I have some more nâdune/cânsag related ones, if that's alright! (I thought I'd put them all in this ask since they were (kinda) related to each other):
So first, do you have any ideas on the origin of the nâdune and cânsag? I vaguely recall that you might have mentioned it at some point but I couldn't find the post again if you did!
Second, do you have the Order of the Sanctuary at all in your canon? I think it's something that's mentioned like once in Legends that the handmaidens were traditionally trained there.
Thirdly, what do nâdune/cânsag after the monarch's full term? Obviously, Padmé's followed her into later politics but not all monarchs go on to continue working in politics.
Fourthly, does anyone else other than the monarch have nâdune/cânsag - like, politicians that were never a monarch, or even members of the upper class or the old families?
Fifthly (because I kept thinking of questions as I wrote this ask), do you have surnames for the other, lesser known handmaidens that are mostly just named on the wiki and don't have surnames? (You might not consider them canon in which case don't worry lol)
And finally (sorry for all the questions lol), is there a term for nâdune/cânsag that's like neutral, so you don't have to say nâdune/cânsag each time?
(Also, if it's not cheeky to ask, if I were to write something using your ideas and credit you, would that be alright? Going through this blog has really inspired me to write handmaiden stuff and I would love to, although I completely understand if you would prefer I didn't!)
Dé sorud! Thank you for entertaining my enthusiasm lol
Hi! I'm so sorry this took absolutely forever to answer, but uh... I have no excuse. I saw the ask, went 'I'll get to it later', and then did not get to it later. Apologies!
To answer your questions:
I have talked about it a little bit here, in the post on enshué, which I suppose is a little unlikely to be where to hunt for it. But tl;dr, the origin of canâk (this is the answer for your last question also!) is just simply the need for security and bodyguards, especially in politically turbulent times on Naboo. If there are five queens in five speeders or whatever the risk is split in five, etc etc. The ritualisation of the canâk and it sort of combining with the facepaint to become a sort of "one face one name" thing happens later, connected to other sociopolitical developments on Naboo.
I... have to say I have never heard of the Order of the Sanctuary 😅 When I say that I don't follow Legends and so on, I really mean that. I'm sure there is some form of training given to the handmaidens, but I don't imagine it's a specific Order or in a specific location - more varied and depending on time, age, people involved, and so on. The process is not as formalised in Padmé's era as it once was, and that reflects in other things.
So I always imagine that canâk can just... quit. I personally love very much the crisis of wearing somebody else's face and somebody else's name, and I think the process would really take something out of you that you may not be able to get back. Nonetheless, I think some of them try. And they can quit! They are allowed! It is just a job, even if it also isn't. I think those that quit in difficult circumstances probably have a bad time of it in public opinion, and I think possibly there may be assassinations and so on if someone tries to quit in term, but after their term as handmaid is over, they are free to leave and do... whatever they want. Whatever other people on Naboo do, I guess. They probably have benefits, given that it's a high-risk political position. A pension plan. Lifetime healthcare.
That's really interesting! I think they can, like nobody's stopping them, and particularly paranoid ones might - but I think it would be more difficult for them to find sufficiently loyal people, unless they've had someone with them since they were young. The position of canâk is not an easy position to occupy, whether that's because of risks to your life or because of the loss of individuation inherent in it. If you're doing it for the ruler of your people, you may be willing – but how many people are going to be as willing when it's just some rich bastard? ...lol. Which is to say: yes, but it may be more difficult, and they'd probably have to pay really well.
I don't have surnames for all of them right now, though I could probably kind of arbitrarily assign surnames to them. If you'd like to hear some other surnames you want to hear about or want to think of some kind of thematic ones, that'd be interesting!
The term is canâk, which I didn't come up with until after I'd written the post on nâdune. The word just means "disguise", but can handily be applied to the people who wear disguises or act as bodyguards in a disguised form – though not, I have to say, to those who wear facepaint for religious orders.
Finally: yes, of course! I'm always happy to answer any q's that may come up while you're playing with these little figurative sandcastles. If you want to write handmaiden stuff, please do - and I'd be thrilled to read it also!
Thank you again for your interest, sorry this took absolutely forever! Dé sorud!

Ooh your art style! I don't know if I can describe it, but it's something about the slightly angular nature of your drawing and the crisp colours and I think also the way you draw your eyes - I can't exactly say but I do know that when I see it, I know it's yours (that might be because we've been mutuals for so long lol)
ohh thanks!! Angular and crisp colors are EXACTLY what I always wanted my art to look like thank you so much! Also I think ik what u mean with the eyes (I only know how to draw one type😭)

Ok I hope you know I started writing some scraps of a Fëanorian au except it's 2k words in and there are no Fëanorians just Nimloth and Dior and their family because apparently tonight your posts are just rotating in my head like a little food dish in a microwave
(which is to say, thank you for sharing your headcanons, they have made my writing really come to life)
aaaa thank you!! That's so flattering (and also very funny. I think Dior and Nimloth would be very smug that they were taking over a Feanorian AU lol)

🍀Fairy portrait!🍀
Not gonna lie, this one took a while bc I encountered numerous problems while painting, like the colors cancelling(?) each other out, expired paper and badly colored hair highlights :') Made those flowers to glue them on her hair but then I decided it'd be the best to just put them there digitally. This way I could make a low effort gif! Yay :D (oh and also, her eyes should be brown but I only noticed this after finishing the picture x') ) Still image under the cut-

This is Gilded Cups Are Empty, who this whole blog is named after. Technically a Katalepsis OC, member of the Yellow Court, but the costume was also recently used as a trickster Fae of the Baneth court who was *incidentally* obsessed with theater. And managed to buy a chair. In exchange for a promise. A promise to later sell the chair back to its owner.
Still dont know how i pulled that off

Oh my god I cannot express how much I love this conlang, I have so many questions and it makes me so inspired to write things based on Naboo (which is also me asking if I may use the things you've created here (with credit of course) in my own writing?).
(also if ever you want an (almost) comprehensive list of Naboo terms I do actually have that list somewhere because I myself spent three days making it and...never used it)
But back to the fact that you have taken a world that's seen a little bit in the films and made it so beautiful and big and added meaning to things said in the films - I find myself absolutely amazed at the hard work and thought you've put into this.
I do have...a lot of questions lol which I made note of as I was going through the blog, but I won't ask them all now - but there was one thing that's been bugging me and that I haven't been able to think of a satisfying answer for yet and that is about Duja, Teckla and Motée's names.
So why Duja and Teckla keep their original names and not take the é at the end? And why Motée is spelt with an extra e? I was wondering if you had any thoughts on that!
Anyway, thank you for sharing all of this I guess?? I have had such a good morning going through it all lol
Hi! Thank you so much for your interest and enthusiasm for this silly little conlang of mine. I've been seeing your notes come in and I am genuinely so delighted to see how keen you are on it!!
Re: the three names!
Teckla isn't from Naboo. The name changing thing is common practice for handmaidens because of the interchangeability of identity and the sort of giving up of their individuation. It's a cultural practice that none of the others - even someone like Dormé who takes up the role for Padmé's senate role and not her period as queen - would really question doing, just naturally. However it's not something that'd occur to Teckla, not something Padmé would ever ask her to do, and sidenote she's never actually acting as Padmé anyway as far as I remember.
Duja... I'll be honest, I had just never heard of her until your ask! There are a lot of sort of canon-ish characters from all these novels and comics and audiobooks and I don't listen to them or read them so I just don't know them.
From a Doylist perspective, I assume it's that somebody forgot the pattern. That quite bothers me, actually. All of Padme's royalty-era handmaidens rather famously have that é ending.
From a Watsonian perspective... it does say on the wiki she was a former handmaiden of Padmé's, so it could just be that after she gave up being a handmaiden, she went back to using her original name. I think this would be a practice that quite a few people went to if they were no longer acting in capacity as a handmaiden, or for a number of other personal reasons, including but not limited to having had a harrowing time as a handmaiden or not wanting to be identified as one of Amidala's people.
Re: Moteé... the name I've assigned her, Motil, is derived from the phrase "to grow wings", and the original phrase mohu tenote, when it is used to construct a name in the é form, maintains the e which gets turned into i in Motil. So there you go!
I'd love to answer any other questions or curiosities you have! Thank you again for your enthusiasm!

Hello hello hello, it has been a while since we last chatted but you are still my resident Witcher mutual and I know you have impeccable taste in fanfic - so I was wondering (if you wouldn't mind) if you could rec any fics about Jaskier's family? Either blood-related from Lettenhove or found family from bard-ing, I'm really unfussy! I'm just very invested in where the bard came from before meeting his Witcher...
Anyway, hope you're doing alright and no worries if this isn't something you're interested in!
Hello Fae!! It's lovely to hear from you! I absolutely do not mind and was delighted at the chance to make another reclist. I hope you find some fics you like!
As always, I would love to hear if anyone reading this has their own recs. Do you know a fic that fits the category? Want to promote one of your own stories? Go for it!
Without further ado, here are a bunch of lovely fics featuring OCs for Jaskier's family!
his hair was like the strands of gold by underlay Rated G, 6k  The Count de Lettenhove has been away from home for several months. Meanwhile, a Witcher has arrived, part of a new protection deal between the Witchers and the Northern Kingdoms. When the Count gets home, he finds a lovesick Julian and a Witcher who isn’t quite what he was expecting. (I have yet to read it, but this one has a sequel that also looks very good!)
for she had done mischief by @whatkindofnameisvolta Rated T, 43k After unexpectedly becoming a father to a demi-god, Jaskier returns to Lettenhove for much needed parental support. There he finds half-a-dozen of his niblings, all with far too much curiosity for their own good. Meanwhile, on the run from Nilfgaard, Geralt, Yennefer and Cirilla also make their way to Lettenhove, to find sanctuary amongst Jaskier's family.
A Mother of One's Own by ohnoesidontknow Rated M, ~1k (one of multiple ficlets posted as the same work) Jaskier's mom adopts Geralt.
enough to drive a man mad by @contemplativepancakes Rated T, 6k Jaskier convinces Geralt to pretend that they’re dating when they visit his parents.
So Inviting (I Almost Jump In) by @happyjuicyfruit Rated G, 5k Geralt accompanies Jaskier to his sister’s wedding. Jaskier’s family is not what Geralt expected.
You, Forever by inanoldhouseinparis Rated G, 16k Geralt and Jaskier pretend to be engaged in Lettenhove.
You've Been Deprived, Haven't You My Dear? by Bedalk05 Rated T, 7k  Jaskier is a shifter and Geralt finds out. (Featuring Jaskier’s mother! I have yet to read the rest of the series, but it looks wonderful.)
Kingdoms Come and Kingdoms Go, Rivers Run and Rivers Flow by @dancinglassie Rated T, 62k Jaskier's start in life was unfortunate, but sadly not unheard of. He was put in a sack, less than an hour old, and chucked in the river. For many in his position that would of been the end of it, but the Yaruga heard his cut off wail and swept him into her loving embrace. Less than an hour old and Jaskier had already died and been reborn as the newest child of Mama Yaruga.
Wicked Things (orphaned) Rated M, 101k  This is the story of how Jaskier helps to save the world. Jaskier is twenty when a rift opens and an army of Fae pour through it. Bloodthirsty and mindless, they sweep across the Continent, devastating human settlements and pushing them into smaller and smaller communities. Jaskier finds himself trapped in Lettenhove, having to deal with his father's gradual decline into madness and protecting his family and his village from the threats outside their walls. He meets a Faerie, trapped in a Faerie Ring; the rest, as they say, is history. (Jaskier’s family is there a lot, especially in the beginning, but heed the tags! There are a lot of other things going on here and a lot of them are horror-y.)
Now, here are a few AUs where Jaskier is related to someone from canon.
of music and motion and love by WriteThroughTheNight Rated T, 12k Jaskier comes from a far humbler background, and would really like to know why Yennefer never came back for her youngest brother. (The sequel is also wonderful!)
Soft Deceitful Wiles by boopboop  Rated M, 23k  Jaskier is Renfri's son, and ten years is plenty of time to prepare a suitable punishment for the Butcher of Blaviken.
Bonus: this one isn't really what you asked for, but it has brief appearances from Jaskier's parents, beautiful found family vibes throughout, and I love it far too much not to mention it!
speak the language of love (like you know what it means) by @restmyheadatnightcontent Rated T, 35k Julian Pankratz, one of the Continent's most famous playboys, always invited to the hottest parties, always seen with the best of the best, is enjoying his lavish life in his huge Cintran apartment when he suddenly gets cut off by his parents and is sent to live in the middle of nowhere. It might turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to him.
More of my reclists can be found here.
