GANON, PIG-FACED PRINCE OF DARKNESS
Just felt like doing a lookback at Ganondorf’s “demon beast” form that he takes on when his dark sorecery combines with the Triforce of Power, as it has gone through so many design changes.
THE LEGEND OF ZELDA
Tumblr media
Yes, this is how Ganon originally looked like. In the original NES game that started it all, Miyamoto had no backstory in mind for Ganon, he was just some demonic creature who was also a powerful dark wizard and known as “the prince of darkness” ‘cause he was pure evil for the sake of being so. Miyamoto at first probably didn’t know how such a creature would look like other than being ugly, but he eventually settled on the idea of Ganon having the face of a hideous boar. The graphics team turned out...that thing. A pudgy blue pig with only two visible fangs, a red tunic with a skull on it, and red boots. When you look at that pig, would you get any of what I described about Ganon, or feel like he at all matched the build-up to him? No. It just looks like a silly cartoon character. Shit tier design, major embarrassment, Miyamoto ensured it never happened again!
A LINK TO THE PAST
Tumblr media
Now that Miyamoto had a better grasp on Hyrule’s lore and decided that Ganon was not a pig creature, but a man named Ganondorf Dragmire who takes on a beastial appearance through dark magic, his design had to reflect that, so he could now better ressmemble what Miyamoto had always had in mind. The above artwork is based on the sprite made for this game. He looks infinitely more credible than his original NES design, but that’s not saying much since he’s still a cartoony blue boar who looks kind of goofy and doesn’t really carry forward the idea of Ganondorf’s fearsome transformed state. The flopped down pig-like ears and pudgy face are too on the nose.
This design has been given a lot of modification in later artworks to make him look far more intimidating and fully restoring Miyamoto’s original vision (as seen in the header image.) Such as this one here:
Tumblr media
OCARINA OF TIME
Tumblr media
With the first 3D entry to the series, Miyamoto decided that they needed to go all out in making the transformed Ganon look like a truly imposing, savage, ferocious beast from out of a nightmare. Thus why now he’s not simply a boar, but he’s got steer-like horns, a lizard tail, hooves, and flaming red hair. He’s also not so much blue as he is...I don’t even know what to call that color. This is the demonic, evil darkness creature that the pig-like Ganon was always meant to be.
ORACLE OF AGES & SEASONS / A LINK BETWEEN WORLDS
Tumblr media
The full evolution of Ganon’s A Link To The Past redesign. Along with the Ocarina of Time and Hyrule Warrior designs, this one is a favorite of mine. He looks absolutely intimidating, vicious, and evil here. The eyes, the ears, the facial structure, the tusks, the spikes, the skulls, the armor, the cape, the hooves, the hair and bulging muscles and brass knuckle...all of it comes together so well. This character artwork is the one used on Ganon’s Wikipedia page for a reason. The only part I don’t get is why the snout has to be a different color than the rest of the face. Or at the very least it could be more purple.
Tellingly, this design was so ideal that A Link Between Worlds used it for its depiction of Ganon, albeit with a few minor diffferences.
Tumblr media
FOUR SWORDS ADVENTURE
Tumblr media
Yeah, sorry, this one is a big step backwards. He looks like the A Link To The Past design with a more simplistic armor and a much uglier palette. I do appreciate the top spikes, demonic eyes, and hooves made it over, and that his snout is blue again, but that’s about it.
BS LEGEND OF ZELDA
Tumblr media
How an unofficial spinoff game chose to depict Ganon. I think they just used the Game Over screen from Zelda II for reference and decided that it was a good enough look for Ganon. Nevermind that the evil pig silhouette on that Game Over screen isn’t even how Ganon looked like in the previous game, or any game for that matter!
TWILIGHT PRINCESS
Tumblr media
Wh....what is this? What are you doing? Every past Ganon design looked anthropomorphic in some way, reflecting a man transformed into a more monstrous state due to abuse of power. This one’s just a giant wild boar with Ganondorf’s hair and headpiece. He runs around on all fours and everything! And sure, he’s intimidating and a threat, but it’s not what I really associate with “Ganon.” Still better than the original blue pig look but overall one of the least remarkable looks.
HYRULE WARRIORS
Tumblr media
This is more like it! Once again a wild boar with dark fur and fiery red hair, but this one gets spikes, gold armbands, somewhat more human facial features and a more human-like posture. The perfect blend of man and beast, reinforcing how Hyrule Warriors gave us the best version of Ganon we’ve had in the franchise to date.
BREATH OF THE WILD
Tumblr media
Technically not Ganondorf in beast form, but Calamity Ganon haven taken on a beast form of its own derived from the original Ganon. While an awesome visual, it’s essentially just a fiery, more demonic looking version of Twilight Princess Ganon that could easily fade from your memory some time after having killed it and won the game.
CADENCE OF HYRULE
Tumblr media
It’s......unique? He’s got Ganondorf-like hair and headpiece crossed with the classic blue-skinned boar with spikes, a cape, a skull belt, and a trident, but good lord those tusks and that snout are huge!
So overall I’d rank the designs as such:
1. Hyrule Warriors 2. Ocarina of Time 3. Oracles of Ages & Seasons / A Link Between Worlds 4. A Link To The Past 5. Four Swords Adventure 6. Twilight Princess 7. Breath of the Wild 8. Cadence of Hyrule 9. BS Legend of Zelda 10. The Legend of Zelda
But maybe at this point Ganon’s beast form and its implications are just starting to show their age. I mean...dark man from the desert who’s the enemy of two fair-skinned, blonde haired, blue eyed heroes can literally dehumanize himself into a fucking pig!? YIKES!

PORTAL AU?????
SO THIS IS ONE OF THOSE DEEPTIVE NAMES! IT'S NOT PORTAL LIKE THE GAME! IT'S A MODERN AU WHERE THEY'RE MILITARY HYLIANS AND ZELDA IS A CIVILIAN SCIENTIST AND THEY USE PORTALS TO TRAVEL TO DIFFERENT WORLDS!
So like the first portal they discover takes them to Zora's Domain (which is not on the same planet) so Zelda has to come up with ways to communicate while Link has to fight foreigh threats with weapons that don't work on the world (like his hylian guns don't work there while he's trying to fight a lynel with the Zora's so he has to learn to fight with other styles, and they accidently attract another portal user, Ganon, who considers himself the god of all these people and has never found the Hylian portal.
So the big plot is them trying to keep Hyrule safe and keep him from finding the portal, while at the same time exploring and understanding new worlds. It's AU so like, there's different areas of the Zora planet. One area is the BOTW area, then there's Great Bay. There's the Domain from OOT. Like, the games are combined for the sake of worlds. Like Gorons have two species: the MM ones who live in snow, and the others who live in hot climates, etc.
This is one of my fav AU's to work on, but it's so big that I just don't have time cause I have so many other AU's I'm writing at the same time. It's one of my fav plots I've given to Link (nothing I said here, just like his backstories and future things he'd have to go through). I have a ton written, but I started rewriting it because I couldn't get the beginning to work well. Link and Rhoam are besties, so it's actually a good Rhoam fic too LOL!
Here's Link and Zelda exploring, and Zelda is claustrophobic so she is NOT happy. Below the cut bc it's a little long with dialogue:
“Mhmm,” Link grumbled, though he was feeling at the door with his hands. “Something seem off to you, Doc?” Zelda looked up. “No. Why?” “The door.” “Yes? What about it?” “It closed.” He turned back to Zelda finally. She set the stone down, crossing the room to meet him, pressing her hand on the surface beside his. “Oh.” “Yeah.” “So, you’re stuck with me for a bit longer then,” she said nonchalantly, going back to her stone. But as she went to pick it up, she stopped. “Link… there’s water on the ground.” “Of course there is,” he grumbled, pushing past her to check the other door. It was sealed tight, but there was a steady rush of water moving in from under the door, and he could feel the pressure of water seeping inside. “It’s fine. The Zora know we’re here. They’ll look for us and see the door closed long before the water—” Link turned to look at Zelda, but she wasn’t where she’d been standing. Instead, she was at the other door, pressing the sensor frantically. The door cracked open ever so slightly, and water began to pour through the widened opening. “Oh shit!” Link hissed, crossing the room as quickly as he could. He couldn’t see through the other side; the water was coming through too fast and rippled. He couldn’t even tell if he needed to close the door, or open it. “Oh gods!” Zelda gasped, stepping away from the rushing water. “Link! I’m sorry! That’s what I used to open the other door before!” “It’s fine,” he said, looking around the windowless room. No other exits. “We just had to be in a world of water-dwelling fish people.” “No, I… I’m so sorry! I don’t like enclosed spaces like this.” “Who does?” Link asked, sardonically eyeing the water. “No, I really don’t,” she breathed. Link turned to see her ghostly white skin beginning to clam up. Some of it was obviously water, but he could see the distinct sheen of cold sweats coating her skin. “Stay calm, okay? We’ll get out of here.” “That’s easy for you to say, Mr. Military! I’m a civilian! My training was in a lab surrounded by microscopes and tools, not staying calm with a room filling with water, okay? The most dangerous situation I’ve ever been in was a chemical spill that got on my hands and burned a little bit of my skin before I could wash it off. Oh, but one other time, I was looking in an old house and the beam broke and I was—” “We’re going to be fine, Zelda.” “How? We are not fish people with gills! Can you swim that whole way up, Mr. Special Forces? Because I can’t! The water is clearly not drained right now. Someone got the schedule wrong, because this shouldn’t be filling up for another hour!”

How I'd do a Zelda film-
Well, I'd actually do two.
The first film would be largely about the rise of a new Link and Zelda, and would focus on them, their relationship as a duo and their characterisation. They would be deuteragonists, because a) that's way cooler than putting Zelda in the kidnap / self imprisonment box, b) that allows us to properly develop their characters in the runtime of a film and c) it gives our protags someone to interact with at all times without having to choose any of the companion characters at the expense of the others.
For Link I'd base him mostly on BOTW link in that he's largely mute, but Zelda and other characters discuss things he's said or done off screen, informing his personality. He would also have a rare voice line here or there because I would heavily focus on his characterisation; struggling to ascend from farmer / smiths apprentice / similar to hero.
For Zelda, I'd take a couple ideas from a couple of places; Among them, I'd combine her "I see the problem, I'm going to fix it, whoops I got in over my head" attributes from OOT with her "I'm responsible for a whole kingdom of people" mojo from TP and BOTW / TOTK, and finally a whisper of the distant princess theme she had going on in TP.
For both of them I'd dedicate a little time to some people close to them, like a version of Impa, a Telma equivalent, a Malon, maybe a mentor figure for Link like Rusl.
I'd establish the cycle of reincarnation as a central concept in the narrative, with Link and Zelda having moments that clearly play into this- the duo has to cross a flooded river, link seemingly sees something in the waters, dragon roost theme surges and we cut to them rafting across. They need to infiltrate an enemy fortress, we see Zelda eying an enemy uniform as Impa's theme subtly plays in the music, and we transition via shadow to her sneaking around in an androgenous disguise. That sort of thing.
The villain would be a relatively minor player, like Malladus or Veran- Malladus would be my preference, as being a toon link villain ties into the theme of these being a 'young' Link and Zelda (though they'd probably have to actually be older iterations of the characters to account for adult actors). I would use Malladus or Veran specifically because their mind control powers lend themselves to a slow start to the plot, where there is clearly a threat for Link and Zelda to oppose but it isn't a direct threat of force, so the pacing can afford to be slower. And yes, I'm saving Ganon/dorf for the sequel, but I got a reason okay?
The deku tree pops up a few times to narrate and dispense exposition, and by the end of the film Link and Zelda know that they are reincarnations and Zelda is seemingly comfortable in that role.
Film two is about Link learning to be the same; he was happy to play the role of the hero in the first film, save the people and his new friend and all, but after a time skip and a few off screen minor adventures, he's having a bit of an identity crisis. What value does he, Link the (insert down to earth profession), actually add? Everything he did in film 1 was just an imitation of The Hero's achievements, another loop of The Hero's adventures.
And then Ganondorf shows up, King of Thieves Ganondorf in fact. A Ganondorf who's gone through a few cycles, learnt from his prior conflicts, and is extremely powerful- as strong as he was in TP, if not slightly stronger. From the moment he shows up, Link and Zelda are reunited because they're on the back foot, evacuating castle town and scrambling to defend the refugees from Ganon's monsters, let alone the man himself (this Zelda's a lot less powerful than BOTW Zelda, to put herself on a more even playing field with Link).
The deku tree shows up and tells Link about the master sword, and about a quarter of the way into the film, Link enters the sacred grove.
And doesn't pull the sword. Not because he can't, though he certainly believes as much, but because he can't take another step into being The Hero. He feels like he's being subsumed by it, like he adds nothing to this grand, looming thing and is instead being replaced by it.
We get some fun drama as the extremely panicked Zelda (who feels super responsible for all her people that are dying) is very upset that Link won't take up the sword, so she draws it herself- but, of course, it will not sparkle with the power to repel evil in her hands. Fi will not accept her as her master. She ends up carrying it with them as they continue the plot.
Over said plot, the duo fight back against Ganondorf and protect the different peoples of Hyrule ala BOTW / TOTK, in the course of which they end up forming a group of allies like The Resistance from TP (with a little influence of the TOTK sages, but more down to earth- they don't have any real super powers or destined duty like the sages).
In a certain, brutal, edge of the seat skirmish, it turns out that Link is actually really good at directing this group- helping them protect eachother and capitalise on their individual strengths.
This Link does have a new skill to bring to the table, does have a self beyond his status as a reincarnation.
The simple truth is that The Hero is so mighty because of the people he became, not the other way around- The Hero didn't know how to sail, the Wind Waker learned to save his sister. The Hero only knows how to fight because Skyloft Link learned, to become a knight, to protect his people, and later to help his friend. The Hero isn't some separate alien influence, it's a legacy, a legacy he is contributing to.
A little while after that battle, after Link and Zelda patch things up and we get to see a confident Link kick some ass, he decides to take up the master sword. Fi is delighted to meet him again.
They fight Ganondorf, who particularly demonstrates his knowledge of The Reborn Goddess and The Hero by repelling manoeuvres that reference other cycles (blocking End Strikes, using Dead Man's Volley to conceal tricky plays instead of playing it straight, using cover and his monsters to prevent the sword and arrow combo from WW and TP.) The moves that actually get him are ones that involve the Resistance, tricks the duo have taught eachother, manoeuvres that previous duos never had the time to work on together.
They defeat Ganondorf by being themselves.

haven’t slept in a while so thoughts are going mushy and i came up with a headcannon for zelda that statistically probably already exists but i don’t care. i came up with it while thinking about how fun it is to annoy zelda fans by calling link zelda. so firstly i will explain what i hope to convince you of throughout this; the legend of zelda is a metaphorical and literal transition story of ganon transitioning into zelda, with link being the space in-between when she was questioning her gender and felt too anxious to even speak. okay so i have like zero cold hard facts and, although i own and have access to a ton of zelda games, have only played like the tutorial to two of them. this may not be very well explained, but i do have the combined information of almost two decades worth of consuming creepypastas, game theories, and miscellaneous info on all of the games. first piece of evidence: the “three” of ganon, link, and zelda are all essentially soul bonded together through divine prophecies and such. it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that they all share a single, albeit fragmented, soul. this soul materialises as the triforce (i do not care about some goddesses that the triforce actually represent, the goddesses are just zeldas inner conscience. boom won.), the triforces being might (i think) for ganon, courage for link, and wisdom for zelda.  lets start with ganons piece of the triforce and work from there. so, ganon is linked to the “might” piece of the triforce, the piece that symbolises tyrannical rule, physical strength, a stalwart defence, and brutality. i think, again i haven’t played the games. with all my expertiese (that ebing none) i believe that ganon represents a stage in zeldas life where she was so far into the closet that she denied her true self and turned to crushing both herself and others. yes, i am saying that ganon is zelda from a time where in order to escape herself and ridicule that she believed could have been brought upon her by others, tried to swing harshly in the opposite direction. she embodied every toxic stereotype of masculinity, pushed other trans people down, and tried to project her self-hatred onto others. let’s leave gandalf here for now. enter, link. link, as the name suggests, is the transitionary period between rejecting herself and accepting herself. link’s triforce is the triforce of courage, the courage to reject all that you’ve been forced to be by an oppressive society, the courage to own up to your old mistakes and wrongdoings and try to rectify them, the courage to apologise and help others that are struggling, and the courage to be yourself. link, unlike ganon, embodies less of the stereotypical features associated with far end of toxic masculinity. link in many of their games has some form of lost innocence, i believe in one game, after saving the day, was unable to live with the rest of their kin as their actions caused them to age unlike the rest of their kin. i believe, metaphorically, that this is due to links uneasy transition from ganon. before being link they had already shown themself to be antagonistic to people who are questioning their genders. perhaps this is also a reason that link rarely, if ever, speaks. perhaps this could also be a significant reason for link’s undying will to fight back against ganon- link never wants to let ganon win again, link doesn’t want to return to being what they were before they finally started accepting themself, and they want to make amends for all the wrongs they did when they were ganon. perhaps the events of majora’s mask were link further questioning, and maybe becoming panicked, that they couldn’t figure themself out- and in blind fear started taking on the identities of people around them, as if putting on masks. and maybe, just maybe, heart canisters are a metaphor for taking estrogen. i don’t know how to justify this it just feels right. but after all that desperate searching- there stood geruda clan which link had to dress femme to enter. i believe this to be the moment that, after all the years spent questioning, link finally began to understand who they, she, really was on the inside. wearing clothes that affirmed the gender of the “zelda” hidden deep within and being accepted into a women’s-only space, even if link wasn’t doing it with the intentions of self-discovery to begin with, and even if it will take time for them to understand what that feeling truly was, it was there. again, i haven’t played botw, i only know about this whole thing from femboy link art. now onto zelda, after all the trials she had to go through, she finally accepted that this is who she is. the triforce of wisdom; enlightenment, knowledge, experience. zelda has all of this because she has experienced centuries of living in many different shoes trying to find the one that fit, until one finally did. but, even after coming this far, she knows she is still wearing those wacky-physics steel shoes also known as “ganon,” she knows that even if she did come this far what is behind her must still be amended, and even after all those decades she still works against her past self, trying to overcome the damage she, and others who were like her past selves, have done. she developed a way to speak with her past selves (because elf magic, duh) to try and help them on their journey to becoming her, but the only one that seemed to listen was when she was link, and thus she stood by the version of herself that finally was able to udnerstand right from wrong and against the version of herself who was still incpable and tried to make wrongs right. and then she transitioned and got magic powers and time travel and stuff, imma be honest i’m reaching at this point, i know basically nothing about zelda other than she’s a princess and what i’ve already written. i’m going to be honest i could come up with a shit ton more absolute word vomit like ganon being just slightly off from another anti-trans (basically anti-everything tbh) hate group but i don’t want to bloat it. so that’s my theory on trans zelda, hope you enjoyed. my eyes are throbbing and dry and i need to sleep.

So, BO2W Breakdown
Buckle up, this is gonna be a long one.
Tumblr media
Here we’ve got Ganon’s...energy taking over Link’s arm. Ordinarily, I’d call it Malice, but based on what it turns into, I’m just going to be calling it corruption. We don’t get much information from this scene besides this expression:
Tumblr media
Link’s grabbing the corruption with his other hand, and wincing. It looks painful. I personally think it’s for cinematic effect that it was included, but it COULD be a gateway into a Phantom Hourglass sort of mechanic--Link has to function on a time limit, or using the corruption’s power could drain his life.
Tumblr media
Next we’ve got a closeup of Ganondorf. F in chat to the rehydration theorists.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the closeups of his jewelry. The only significant thing I can see is his necklace, which looks like a cross between the Gerudo symbol and a Fleur de Lis:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what I’M most interested in is this tie on his belt:
Tumblr media
For one, it’s WAY bigger than it needs to be, and that’s deliberate. Ganondorf’s got a jewelry aesthetic he’s already hit above; everything else is gold, why not this bit?
Most importantly, you can barely make it out, but the designs either look Sheikah or Zonai--they’ve got that same kind of swirly busy pattern to them. The red tint and tan-ish lines in it makes me think it’s possessed Sheikah tech.
Tumblr media
Next, we’re shown Zelda falling. This looks like it happens right after these two caps from the first trailer:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we reach for her as the ground collapses, and evidently, we fail to pull her back up. So my next question for that scene is going to be what the in-game reason is for us not diving in right after her. Maybe we won’t get one, since the appeal of the original BOTW was that you could fight Ganon whenever you wanted.
Up next, we’ve got a skydiving shot:
Tumblr media
The first thing to notice is that Link’s pose while skydiving is just about identical to his pose in Skyward Sword:
Tumblr media
Second is that, yes, he’s falling towards a floating island, and that in itself is noteworthy, but he’s FALLING. There’s something either above him that he jumped off of, or a force that carried him high enough TO fall, and I doubt Nintendo’s encouraging magnesis flying.
So, there’s a few options: Loftwings making a return (which is unlikely, but a hope I have), something like Revali’s Gale boosting Link up for a cinematic shot, indicating that the corruption arm has that kind of power, or islands higher than the one shown here.
Now the island itself:
Tumblr media
In Skyward Sword, Skyloft looks like this:
Tumblr media
And (spoiler alert) we loose this island here over the course of the game:
Tumblr media
Now, it’s not a PERFECT 1:1 match, as most things between games aren’t, but a quick rotate and overlay shows it’s got the same kinds of shapes between the two. The same “W” shape along the eastern side, the same tiny island off the northeast point, the same relative edges.
Tumblr media
Now, I don’t know what happened to the plaza at South Skyloft, or the Knight’s Academy isle, but it could very easily be drift away from the central island.
Tumblr media
The presence of other islands through the clouds seems to support that theory. Now let’s look at Link here:
Tumblr media
The outfit is new. We haven’t, to my knowledge, seen one of this design in other games. My gut reaction to this image was “oh, we go back in time and we’re the first hero now!” because it’s vaguely reminiscent of Tapestry Hero.
Tumblr media
But upon closer inspection, that theory’s null and void. Under Link’s tunic in the image above, you can see that he’s still wearing the shorts he woke up in in the first game. So either Sheikah boxers haven’t changed in 10,000 years, or it’s taking place in present day. Jokes aside, I’m curious to know if the outfit he’s wearing is modeled after Tapestry Hero.
Next thing to point out is the obvious:
Tumblr media
Link’s arm here looks less prosthetic and more...withered, I almost want to say. The corruption here’s made his hand look frailer, and armored them up with Zonai patterns before it fades out at his shoulder. Based on how the tattoos look, I think they’re an artifact of the corruption taking hold.
Also, the belt here:
Tumblr media
Aesthetic purposes, or specific function? The presence of the second, smaller one on the side reminds me of Skyward Sword’s adventure pouch, which could be how the new game handles inventory size:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we’ve got another flying shot:
Tumblr media
It seems like he’s flying towards Ruined Skyloft, and you can see the bottoms of islands above it, possibly meaning that the sky serves as more than just a hub world like it did in Skyward.
Now let’s look at the paraglider he’s using. It’s new.
Tumblr media
This is how the paraglider looks in the original BOTW. It looks like we still have the Rito symbol in the center, but other than that, there’s a LOT of changes here.
Tumblr media
First off is the color. We’re now blue and gold. The shade of blue makes me think of the Kochi Dye Shop’s navy blue:
Tumblr media
So, possibly a dyeable paraglider?
The new pattern surrounding the Rito symbol makes me think that it’s combining the paraglider with Skyward Sword’s sailcloth:
Tumblr media
Other than that, there isn’t much else to say about the paraglider besides the handles looking like they’re made of bone. Craftable paragliders? God, I hope not.
Back to Link:
Tumblr media
Here we have him in different gear than the last shot. He’s wearing the snow boots, he has a shield with a stylized Eye of Truth looking upwards, and he looks like he’s carrying a traveler’s sword and an unknown bow. The presence of the bow makes me think that the shield here is a lower tier item, rather than this game’s Hylian Shield equivalent.
Now, let’s get a better look at the horizon:
Tumblr media
The trees here look a lot like the smaller trees you can find in Akkala, but there’s a distinct lack of red among them.
Tumblr media
Then it looks like we’ve got some ruins at the furthest isle.
Tumblr media
Whatever the rock formations are over there, they don’t LOOK natural.
Another thing I noticed is the bottoms of the islands.
Tumblr media
These look a little too geometric to be natural, too. Now, this one, I’m a little muddy on, because it COULD be a stylistic choice. But it also reminds me of the Shrines if you clip out of bounds:
Tumblr media
And a little bit of the dormant Gate of Time from Skyward:
Tumblr media
My money’s on the cube-like nature of the islands’ undersides being deliberate, rather than just a far-off render.
And then there’s this thing!
Tumblr media
What is it? It doesn’t look broken at all; look how nicely the roof(?) is kept. The ribbing on the sides makes me think it might be a Zonai thing, but the shape makes it difficult to figure out. A giant temple? An airship? A sloped coliseum? This thing haunts and vexes me.
Tumblr media
Our next shot is presumably from one of the islands, based on the color. Here we can see that there are definitely ruins all over the place. Link is in the same gear as before, so I won’t touch on him.
Tumblr media
This, however, has my interest. The design here has more geometric patterns--Zonai ruins?
Tumblr media
We’ve got another one off in the distance here. Sky checkpoints, like Sheikah towers?
Tumblr media
Now this guy here. There’s a LOT to look at. First off is the eye design, it’s the same sort of upward looking one that Link has on his shield in the previous shots.
Tumblr media
The energy that’s pulling this thing towards its base looks like the same green energy that surrounds the arm holding Gan in place in Trailer One:
Tumblr media
This stuff. That, plus the fact that the robot has to be pulled into its base rather than just existing, implies that either A: Link activates it himself, like a trial thing, or B: that the green energy here functions in the same way Malice does in the original BOTW.
Tumblr media
This pattern at its base is intriguing, too. I don’t recognize the gold symbol in the center, but the green around it reminds me of the portals from Twilight Princess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which, yes, everyone’s already said that the Twilight Princess patterns look like Zonai things. But another thing this weird dial thing reminds me of is from Lanayru Desert:
Tumblr media
On top of that, the color palette of this guy looks like that of the Lanayru Robots from Skyward:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BO2W robot on the left, Lanayru robot on the right. Given that Skyward is a lot more vibrant than other non-Toon Zelda games, I think this is a fair enough comparison to draw similarities from.
Tumblr media
And then we get a closer view of the sky ruins from the last shot. I don’t know if the geometric pattern in the corner is a deliberate carving, or wear from time, but since the pattern looks ALMOST mirrored around the corner, I’m going to go with the former.
Tumblr media
A better shot a few frames later. The robot has HANDS, which I do not like in any way shape or form. However, we get a better look at the sky ruins.
Tumblr media
We haven’t seen this style of stairs before, to my knowledge. The pedestal out front looks like a light source, and it has the same floral egg thing the robot above has on each shoulder; the eggs could easily be a power source for Zonai tech. And at the top of the stairs, we see a pedestal, backing up the theory that these ruins function as our new Sheikah towers.
Tumblr media
This is our next shot. Which...
Tumblr media
Unikoblins. Can we talk about that? UNIKOBLINS.
Tumblr media
Anyways, Link is here again in his old clothes. This is a very early game shot, because his right arm isn’t corrupted yet; this means we get to explore Hyrule before we embark on the main quest. Which gives rise to a question: Where’s Zelda?
The hopeful side of me wants to say that she’s a tutorial companion, like Navi or Tatl, at least for the beginning here. The pessimistic side of me thinks that she’s waiting for us at a predetermined location, and this is just part of getting to her.
Now the unikoblin structure itself is built on a Talus, meaning that the dev team at least intends to have more inter-monster interactions. But if you kill the Talus, does that mean that the base falls apart, or does it just drop down as a separate entity?
Tumblr media
Also, what are these background ruins? The one on the left looks like it’s a distinctly different style than the one on the right. It looks almost like a giant guardian arm.
Tumblr media
Our next shot is Link’s arm getting corrupted. Which, first of all, the effects look beautiful.
Now, we can see a corner of Link’s hip here, and we know that this is his right arm. So Link’s lying down here. Unconscious? Knowing how Zelda games like to start with Link waking up, probably. Although it looks like at least part of his shorts got an update.
Tumblr media
We can see what looks like circuits here. It looks a bit like the electricity puzzles you can find in the Divine Beasts and Shrines in the original.
Tumblr media
Then we’ve got these strange symbols.
Tumblr media
Whatever this circular stone he’s lying on is, it looks a lot like the Zonai puzzle from the “A Fragmented Monument” sidequest.
Tumblr media
This one that everyone thought was the Mirror of Twilight for years.
Our next shot is Link using the corruption powers against enemies:
Tumblr media
The spike ball itself looks solid; the question is, is this a duplication power, or a visualization of how the spike ball is set into motion?
Tumblr media
We see it barreling over a poor Unikoblin or two, but I’d like to turn your attention to the Moblin and the background.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The moblins here have helmets, and the bases, while they carry the same design, look like they have more cause and effect in mind. The left base’s rock, for instance; that’s a lot bigger than the rocks we got to play with in the last game, and it looks like we can barrel anything in the screen over with it.
The helmet, though, concerns me a little bit. It looks natural rather than forged; like it’s the moblin’s horn, just very much deformed. Does it mean a harder enemy, or is it just for flavor?
Tumblr media
Our next shot is this strange flower thing. Note that Link’s right arm is perfectly fine in this shot, meaning that it’s still early game.
Tumblr media
This is what Link’s flamethrower looks like. And this:
Tumblr media
Is Zonai art.
So the question is, what IS the flamethrower? My first thought was that it’s either a new item in its own, or it’s a Sheikah Slate upgrade. The latter might sound a little far fetched, but Link in this game is right-handed, and in BOTW, he always held the slate in his LEFT hand when using it.
Tumblr media
We have more of the weird faded designs that we saw on the Sky ruins:
Tumblr media
And we’ve got some kind of pedestal or stage behind the ground flower thing:
Tumblr media
It looks like it’s either an altar or a grave, from what I can tell. The stairs aren’t the same design as the ones in the sky, and there aren’t any patterns on it.
More importantly, though, is that this place is underground. This could be a part of the game you’re required to go through, in order to get to Raisin Gan.
A few seconds later, though, we get our answer to what the flamethrower is!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a shield!
Tumblr media
Off to the left side, we can see pillars with more weird scribblings towards the top. These match the Sky ruins’ pillar shape, with a narrow base and a wider top.
Our next scene is...weird.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see a puddle splash in reverse. It’s hard to tell if it’s actually water or not, but the design on the ground implies that it’s either been there for a long time, or that that’s a dedicated splash spot. And the quality and zoom makes me think that this is part of a cutscene. Return of the timeshift stones?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then see Link...surfacing out of the island? I don’t know how else to describe it. However, his arm is changed again, and glowing, meaning that this is a corruption power. And the “water” he rises out of here looks a lot like the puddle in the last clip.
We get a good look at the Zonai Lights:
Tumblr media
A Sky ruin that looks like it contains a room:
Tumblr media
And a glimpse of other isles’ ruins in the far distance.
Tumblr media
And then as the camera zooms out...
Tumblr media
We can place a location!
Tumblr media
We’re right over Thundra Plateau!
We also get a mildly better look at the back wall of the sky ruin, which looks to be some kind of table:
Tumblr media
The next scene is Hyrule Castle:
Tumblr media
The ground shakes and it starts to rise up. However, notice that the columns surrounding the castle are now missing.
Tumblr media
We’ve also got red sparks in the air, like we would have in a blood moon. However, due to the sky color, we can assume that this is a conscious decision by Gan himself, and that he isn’t drawing power from his surroundings.
Tumblr media
We then see that power bleeding out of the ground. It’s MUCH more red than Malice is, which has always been a kind of burnt pink-ish color.
Tumblr media
However, even though Ganon lifts the castle up, he doesn’t lift it very high.
Tumblr media
The castle’s about triple the height it was. But since we’re talking Skyloft levels of floating islands, this is still pretty ground-level. What’s interesting to me, though, is that in this shot, despite the game now being about sky islands that we should be able to see from ground level...there aren’t any here. This, to me, means that there’s going to be a sudden appearance of the isles in the sky, rather than them simply being accessible now.
And that’s the whole trailer! I have many questions.
My blog! If you have any opnions/questions/theories, feel free to drop an ask!
Part 2 is up! We missed a lot!

So I tried to keep my Twilight bias out of the Disowned!Royal!Reader ask I sent in but you clearly saw straight through me, Pinky so FULL STEAM AHEAD!!! (In other news my laptop now has a whole new wip that will probably never see the light of day based on this concept. Rip me)
———
You had been very annoyed in the past few days ever since it had come out among your friends that your biological father was the King of your Hyrule.
(You snorted internally. That man hadn’t been your father since the day Link had been born and had disowned him in the same morning, despite being second in line after Zelda since it went by age among cousins rather than among siblings. Thank Farore that your mother had sense and had asked you to be there for the birth. Needless to say, any potential for reconciliation died the day Link had been recognised as the Hero, at the age of four, and that man had decided to start training him. Without your permission.)
(Solving that problem had resulted in you becoming the Hero instead, but at least Link was safe and had a new Aunt who spoilt him rotten.)
You understood that they would need time to process this new revelation, but the near 180 in how you were being treated was infuriating. You weren’t someone to be coddled.
Granted, a few of them hadn’t changed that much to your relief. Wind, Sky and Time seemed relatively normal and Four just occasionally sent you baffled looks out of the corner of your eye.
Wild had gotten a look in his eye that spoke of deep admiration and longing, but you’d speak to him privately about that later. Something told you that that conversation would have no few tears in it.
Hyrule, on the other hand, had started avoiding your eyes and was often seen frowning at the ground. You’d spoken to him about it and all you’d manage to get out of him was a sad sigh and something about his Zeldas. Another thing to speak about later.
Legend had just gotten downright strange, oscillating between treating you normally, giving you a sad frown from afar or just outright ignoring you. But whatever it was that was causing him to have more mood swings than things he had hoarded in his house was slowly petering off. You’d give him another week before confronting him.
Warriors and Twilight, on the other hand…
You ran a hand over your face and groaned. Warriors was not a surprise, in fact you had half been expecting it with how proud the Captain had been about his title and the respect he clearly held for not only Zelda, but his Royalty. So for him suddenly treating you with the utter respect and dignity expected from a Royal Captain towards a Member of the Royal Family? Should have seen that coming despite how annoying it was.
Twilight was a surprise though.
You hadn’t thought things would change this much with him! From what little Twilight said about his Zelda was just respect and a mention about her helping him in the final battle against Ganon. Nothing that said he would suddenly start avoiding you!
(Once and only once did you hear him murmur the name Midna and the hurt buried under levity when he’d spoke of a princess as beautiful as the setting sun breaking his heart burned your own. Maybe that was the reason.)
The more you thought about it, the more annoyed you got. Honestly, at this rate, it would take hitting him to make him understand that you weren’t some delicate plant.
You paused as you slowly picked your way back from patrolling. While straight out hitting Twilight (or Warriors for that matter) was out of the question as Time would give you the Look, sparring didn’t sound like a bad idea.
And it’s not like you’ve shown off the true extent of your swordsmanship. There’s been no need too.
A slow sly smile crossed your face.
The Rancher wouldn’t know what hit him.
~~~~~~
Twilight wasn’t sure what to feel when you approached him and asked to spar privately, and it was obvious with the way his expression shifted.
What was even more obvious was the clear alarm that crossed his face when you pulled out The Fang.
(You’d already spoken to Fas who kindly agreed to let you spar on the condition of uninterrupted Link Cuddles the next time they were home. You’d probably regret that later, but whatever got Fas on board.)
But Twilight wasn’t a Hero of Courage for nothing. He unsheathed his own sword and took a stance.
What followed could only be described as a one-sided massacre.
All Twilight knew was that your eyes went cold, your arm twitched, and The Fang was flashing through the air before it made contact with his own blade.
There was some loud clangs before he hit the ground flat on his back.
The blade buried itself into the ground right next to his ear and you stared coldly down at the rancher beneath you, your knees framing his neck and your body pinning his upper body down.
“You’re good.”
You let the fury and annoyance wash away and you smiled at him. His ears went red.
“But I’m better. I’m still the same person I was when you first met me. I never hid that.”
With that, you rolled back onto your feet, pulled The Fang out of the ground and skipped off. Either Twilight would stop treating you like glass or he wouldn’t. You still got to work out your frustration.
Behind you, Twilight remained lying on the floor, his heart beating frantically, and he draped an arm over his eyes to try and hide the heat spreading all over his face.
Just when he thought you couldn’t get any more out of his league, it was revealed you were royalty. Former royalty, yes, but royalty none the less. You deserved a whole lot more than he could give you.
And then you just had to go and pull this! How was he supposed to function when you just pulled the scariest, the most incredible and the best swordplay he’d ever seen! Just who let you be this insanely brilliant?!
He groaned loudly. He really should’ve just listened to Time.
FULL STEAM AHEAD!!!!!
INSANITY!!!! WHY MUST YOU KILL ME WITH YOUR BEAUTIFUL WORDS??!?!
Twilight bias? Always welcome. And it's not that I saw right through you- I just in-between the lines. ;)
Also, I've noticed you've combined HoF! Reader and the Disowned Royalty! Reader into one character.
I approve.
But also- WIP? Never to see the light of day? I would still gladly read it.
OH I figured something out for my original Zelda story, Legacy of a Millenia
previously I wasn't sure how to structure the first half of the story (like a plausible reason for why we're dungeon hopping) so I was using this flimsy "bucket list" reason. AND I wanted to work in this revolution plotline throughout the whole story that heavily featured Impa, but I didn't have space for it.
SO, put these two problems together, and solve them both!!
The current monarchy is tyrannical and cruel, so Impa's secretly working against them while still acting as the leader of their secret police type thing (since we know that's what the Sheikah were used as in the past)(also don't worry this current monarchy is like fifth in the line of dynasties after Hylia's line was overthrown thousands of years ago). She's trying to organize a resistance, but she has her hands full with doing the jobs the government is giving her in order to keep their trust, helping the people she has access to, and trying to keep her family safe. So she doesn't have a lot of time to hunt up the other races (who are not recognized as independent governments) and organize a combined effort to replace the current government.
The idea is that at the turning point in the game when Shei dies, Impa is also overthrowing the corrupt government and replacing it with a council formed of representatives from each of the different Hylian cultures. (My problem is that I'm getting too realistic with economics and politics and trying to figure out what sort of characters should represent the races because they would have to have a good understanding of the social standing and needs of everyone in their society + wondering if i can get away with not setting up a separation of powers...............I have Thoughts about economy and government all right)
Well anyway during the first half of the game Impa is sending you as a member of her resistance to each race and getting you to understand them and their troubles and also scout out potential representatives for the council for the new ruling body of Hyrule. And whoopsie it looks like each race she sends you to happens to have a problem caused by Ganon that only you can fix thereby winning their trust and also fulfilling your purpose as the Link of all of Hyrule and checking another box on the zelda game checklist-
Sorry hhh uh so yeah that's the engine for the first half and then the second half is the quest to hunt down all the pieces of the goddess-blood essence so you can confront Ganon (no im not sure where he is or what he's doing this whole time shh im figuring it out), but interspersed with this would be a bunch of other quests to help integrate the new government and right the wrongs the old one did.
One of my plans for those quests is convincing and contributing towards getting a bunch of Hylians to move off of the land that was the Sheikah's before Hylia's line got overthrown. Like talking to and cajoling a bunch of farmers to leave for the Very Convenient And Happy Farmland you found in your travels (yes i KNOW thats an easy solution but i am only very small and this is a very big problem i think i can be forgiven for using a cop-out).
so now I have the two plotlines tentatively outlined (with a bunch of missing pieces obv) and that makes me very happy
revali x reader 16 (i think?) verklempt please ❤️
Tumblr media
16. verklempt - completely and utterly overcome with emotion
19. temerate - to break a bond or promise
pairing: revali x reader summary:  falling in love is difficult when neither of you know the end is near.
   Night had fallen by the time you mustered the courage to walk up to him. He watched the shining caps of your barely worn boots approach the other side of the campfire, sensing your nervousness as you awkwardly stood for a few beats, weaving and unweaving your fingers.
Either his reputation as the strongest Champion preceded him, or he was completely unapproachable. Throughout the day you would chance a look at him from across the camp, quickly averting your eyes the moment he noticed. You were part of the Princess’ research effort and therefore had some questions— that much he was certain of. Yet you’ve been dancing around him for hours, gathering the will to speak only to have it snuffed out the moment he acknowledged your presence.
Embers lifted from the flames and flickered into the night sky as you finally faced him. Revali held his tongue and gathered his patience, trying to hide the glitter in his eyes at the chance of ‘wowing’ another admirer (nevermind that you were the first).
“Champion, uh sir,” you fumbled with the titles. The question fell from your lips so quickly that his disappointment didn’t register until a second later. “What kind of flower do you favour the most?”
“...”
If the following silence wasn’t damning enough, the Rito was honestly at a loss for how to respond to such an inane question. Seriously? He was better than this. Others have made more important inquiries and had to wait weeks, if not months, for him to clear time in his busy schedule and reply.
Something like this didn’t deserve attention, let alone an answer.
“Swift violets.” He said, before rising from his seat by the fire, dead leaves crunching under the weight of him as he made a beeline straight for his tent.
Parting the canvas, he pretends to miss the earnest wave of goodbye you send his way, ignoring the static in his chest the moment his head hits the pillow. Sleep comes quickly.
*
A month later you meet again.
The universe seemed to adore playing tricks on him. Crossing the threshold of his home, he catches you investigating the decorative shells hanging by his kitchen window. Amusingly, you were balancing on the tips of your toes, its placement just a tad too high.
There’s something different this time around. You seemed more at ease with your surroundings, no longer jumping at every sound like a stranger in their own skin. The tips of your boots were scuffed with use, and the minute cuts and imperfections in your clothes spoke of days spent in hard work and travel.
Though some things still remain the same. He holds back his smirk when you stumble forward in surprise at the sound of your name, getting straight to business once you were safe from the risk of falling over. “I believe you’re the researcher sent to assess my progress with Vah Medoh?”
“Yes, I am.” You’re quick to snap back into stiff professionalism, he’ll give you that. The bow is low and formal, your back so still that someone could confidently rest a cup and saucer on it. An introduction spills out, followed by an apology when you realise he already knows who you are from the briefing he was given days earlier in Hyrule Castle.
The task was simple really. King Rhoam Bosphoramus wanted a full report on the breadth of Hyrule’s offensive capabilities against Calamity Ganon. From Guardians to Divine Beasts, much had been done in the past year in preparation for their greatest adversary. Now as the whirlwind began to settle, all must be accounted for, down to the last soldier.
Your report was just a drop in what will be an immense ocean of information currently being collated. But it was nevertheless quite vital. He wonders how someone like you was selected for such a task.
“Let’s do our best.” You blurt. Revali could see the millions of thoughts racing behind your eyes when you decide to break away from your military-stiff posture, raising a hand in the traditional Hyrulean greeting between strangers.
The lines of your palm stretch before him like deeply-woven thread. He glances at the wrinkles and grooves in your flesh, remembering that some mystics believe such lines could predict something as unknown as the future. He can’t help but wonder what yours might foretell.
Pressing his wing to your outstretched hand, he declared his agreement. “Of course. You’ll soon see that my ability to pilot Medoh is nothing short of perfect.”
He can’t help it. “And no questions of the botanical sort, understood?”
The sudden playful grin you give him makes all his witty quips screech to a halt, his focus trained solely on the way your face instantly lights up when it isn't held down by strict politeness or pure nervous energy. “I’ll be sure to steer clear from them this time, Champion. You have my word.”
*
Both of you eventually fall into a comfortable routine. Meals are made together and the chores are done quickly through combined effort. You catch on well, cottoning on to the needs of the day based on the tasks you both decide on the night before.
After breakfast he finds his gear and yours already neatly arranged by the doorway, allowing him additional time with Vah Medoh and you the chance to closely observe. The idea of training with an audience never bothered him, but knowing you followed close behind, notebook at the ready, gave him the extra push to perform just a level better than his previous.
One more arrow, one more extravagant somersault in the air. He even maneuvers Medoh to do a complete 180, reveling in the way your mouth pops open in awe as you walk across what was once the ceiling.
“... .... --- .-- / --- ..-. ..-.” The ancient machine complains, unhappy to be on their back. The Rito pilot pats the metal wall apologetically, watching as you excitedly flit from one end to the other, feeling quite pleased with himself.
*
Revali dreams of a cliff’s edge.
The precipice looms before him, nothing but fog and the unknown past the point where the ground stops and plummets. Revali looks at you and feels the smooth rock of the sea stone underneath his talons; hears the sound of crashing waves in the distance. Tantalising was the mystery of the void beyond.
The meaning escapes him the moment he wakes up. His pillow was warmed by the glow of the sun, making him realise that he had slept in. Morning was just beginning, and both of you had a full schedule of tasks to get through.
Diverting all his mental energy to the work ahead, he scrubs the sleep from his eyes and shakes away the odd thrill in his feathers. I’m better than this, he thinks.
His tea is still warm when he arrives at the table.
*
Word of the researcher shadowing him gets around quickly, it’s a small village after all. Some of the Elders glance at you in suspicion, old wounds from disagreements fought with the capital in the past lingering like dye in the water. You don’t seem to mind it, too caught up in the new sights and smells of this vibrant community built in the clouds.
The Rito children are much more enthusiastic about your presence, sharing in your curiosity by matching your questions with their own. Getting comfortable on the wooden slats of the departure deck, you happily play encyclopedia for them.
“Were you this cute back then?” You ask, watching a fledgling hop from one talon to another in imitation of a lizalfos, chasing after their friends who were the heroes in the story, at least for this round of the game.
“I was a model citizen.”
“Not true!” One of them pipes, poking him in the side with the tiniest of wings. “Mama said you were a hennish scallion.”
“You mean a hellish rapscallion,” the eldest of the bunch laughs, screaming when the ‘lizalfos’ tackles them into the ground.
Crossing your arms, you fix him with your best look of authority, shaking your head in mock disappointment. “I apologise but the council has spoken.” He raises a brow at your antics, feeling a little light headed at the adorable way your eyes water whenever you hold back your laughter. “Do you plead guilty for perjury, Mr Champion?”
Champion. The word echoes and reverberates, wrapping tightly around his brain like the blue scarf fitted snugly on his neck. He likes the way you say it, making him wonder about something else.
The words leave his mouth before he can think it through. “Revali will do just fine.”
Mirth drains from your face, replaced instead by surprise. “W-what?”
“I have a name.” He ignores the feeling of his feathers standing at the back of his neck, unclenching his jaw. Relax, he tells himself. “Better for you to call me that than to continuously mess up the titles.”
“Still working on it,” you shrug. Then, you’re gesturing for him to step into your space, leaning forward just the same like you’re about to tell him a secret. You’re close enough for him to feel the warmth of your breath against his beak. He freezes, becoming hyper aware of his heart thundering against his ribcage, not daring to move even a muscle in fear of giving his thoughts away.
“Revali then,” you murmur, almost too soft for him to hear.
It was only when one of the children tugged at your sleeve, dragging you away to explain the appearance of another monster you’ve encountered in your travels, that he allows himself to breathe.
*
His presence had been requested at the Chief’s office, the old, war-weary Rito regretfully informing him that an urgent message had arrived. Multiple reports had noted an increase in the signs of Calamity Ganon’s resurgence. It came as no surprise, with every Blood Moon summoning more monsters from the void, an omen that something big was coming.
Letters from the Princess implied the worst: that she had exhausted nearly all avenues in awakening her sealing power. The Spring of Wisdom would be her last chance, and after that, who knows? The Champions were to meet again in three weeks at the foot of the mountain, to celebrate or to re-strategise depending on the outcome.
He was never the religious sort but by the Grace of Hylia, please let it be the former.
A headache was beginning to form as he made his way home, the idea of knocking out on his hammock for an hour or so sounding extremely appealing. The day was coming to a close, a cold breeze chilling his back as the orange heat of the evening crept its way to night.
You’re the first one to the hut this time, brown scuffed boots positioned neatly at the doorway. Revali stares at them for a second too long, wondering if you knew your time in the village was coming to an end earlier than expected. The information you had diligently collected was finally required, a little last minute if he had to comment but such were the nature of these things.
The mental image of you puffing out your cheeks in frustration, complaining that you would have to organise the data on the way back, was enough to make his mood perk up— just a tiny bit. Picturing you disgruntled and annoyed, just like when the markets ran out of your favourite produce, was easier to stomach than the thought of saying goodbye.
Leaning against the hardwood of the kitchen counter, you don’t notice him enter the room, too engrossed in the list you’re making.
It's a sight he'd seen before. If he forgot about the sobering news he'd just received, then the day would feel like any other.
The open window frames your form, making you appear like a painting come to life. Rays of light streamed from the cracks in the blinds, illuminating the slope of your nose and curve of your mouth.
Instinctively, you tilted your head to the source of warmth, instantly reminding him of the swift violets that would bloom by the Hebra cliffsides, forever seeking the sun.
Oh.
The ground had finally run out, earth and sky crashing together. There was no denying it now. Inwardly, he cursed himself, following the thought past the precipice, plunging himself deeper into the truth he'd avoided acknowledging for months. The universe truly was cruel.
It wasn’t like he didn’t see it coming. The answer was clear as day, right from the beginning of its inception.
It's the golden hour before sunset when Revali realises he’s in love with you.
*
Wind plays with the jade clasps of his braids as he appraises Medoh’s central control unit. He’d done this maneuver many times before, enough that he could perform it with his eyes closed.
It was your final day on assignment so shouldn’t he attempt an action that was more daring? He tried to ask. But you had rejected the proposal outright, reasoning that it suggested this would be the last time you both would meet at the top of the Divine Beast. “You can’t get rid of me that easily,” you smile. “I’ll visit once the fight is over.”
“Guess there’s no harm in going back to the basics,” he mused, inputting the commands before taking a step back.
Leaning against one of the columns, you watch with rapt attention as he points the Divine Beast south. The view abruptly shifts from the towering mountains of Hebra, to the grassy Tabantha Frontier, greenery spanning for miles and disappearing into the white, snowy wall of Mystathi’s Shelf.
You tilt your head up, eyes trained on the heavens. There’s a solemn intensity in the way you look at the sky, as if trying to ascertain a greater meaning to your existence in this world between the cover of clouds and the endless sea of blue. It never gives you the acknowledgement that you desperately want, no matter how long you spend asking it, but that doesn’t stop you from searching anyway.
He understands because he’s tried asking well, too many times to count. Eventually the young Rito stopped looking, opting to make an answer for himself instead.
“Do you ever get tired of it?”
Revali’s silent for a moment, mulling over his answer, before he pushes away from the control unit and starts walking towards you. “There’s no spectacle grander, and I can’t recall a time I’ve been without it. As a Rito, it was your first companion, and so long as you looked above, you were never alone.” He shook his head. “Though I guess to love something so vast and beyond our comprehension would be rather imbecilic.”
He’s running his mouth at this point, the hum of Vah Medoh loud in his ears. “... .. .-.. .-.. -.-- / -.-. .... .. .-.. -..” the beast warns, but he continues anyway.
“It’s far too foolish to pine for something that will never be in your grasp. So it would be best for me to realise that there’s no point in fighting it anymore. I mean, I should feel relieved by the concession that at least I’ll be remembered by someone other than myself.”
Your attentions were no longer directed at the sky, the intensity of your eyes piercing into him, seeing right through his poorly hidden deflections. “Are we still talking about the same thing?”
The urge to plunge himself over the edge and fly away by the sheer fuel of his embarrassment was beginning to feel very enticing. Trust his description of the sky to sound like a confession. “No,” he admits.
“Then…”
Revali thinks about telling you— considers allowing himself to become vulnerable just this once.
You’re still here, feet planted firmly on the ground, within his reach at this very moment. There was nothing he wanted more than to take that last step forward, to close the gap that perpetually rests in between you both. He imagines what it would feel like to wrap his wings around you, and believes that it would be nothing less than holding infinity.
Yet, despite this— despite everything, he sighs. “Another time.”
Almost like reading his mind, you simply nod in response, smiling as you reach out to him. He lets you take one of his wings in both your hands, the firm surety of your touch grounding him into the present. There’s no hesitation in your next words, only a promise of a thousand tomorrows lingering on the corner of your lips.
“Tell me when we meet again?”
“I swear it on my life.”
.
.
.
-
As usual, what was supposed to be a short and sweet answer became a creature of its own, demanding my full attention until it was finished. Writing in Revali’s POV is so fun, but there’s always that small bit of doubt that I can never do his character justice. Regardless, I hope you all enjoy this one.
By the way! Hello to all the new visitors to my blog. Welcome yall. This is the prompt list. I may not answer straight away, but I shall do my best :)
Heya!! Kip here! The @memorabiliazine preorders have just shipped, which means we can share our pieces now! I wrote this piece back in February, after theorizing about the presence of Robbie's Telescope being present in the Royal Tech Lab in Age of Calamity. So without further a do, here be my little essay/fic on some old ruins, or more specifically, its:
Cause of Destruction
The storm had come too late. Thankfully, it was all devastated.
She continued to run from the screaming.
The Sheikah woman headed for the hills, brittle trees littering the eastern side of the Lindor mountain side. If she hurried, she could meet up with the others who had—
A distant crack of thunder melded with the collapse of stone; she makes the mistake of glancing back.
In the greater horizon, the shadow of Hyrule Castle looms over a conquered dusk. A shrill cry—something between a roar and a whine—escapes from the cloudy malice beast that enshrouds the Hylian monument. But that was just the backdrop, the canvas for contrast. Closer still, in the billowing grass of North Hyrule Plain, the stormy winds cut through fog and smoke like a dagger.
In the opened wound, the faint silhouette of a building glows.
Blue.
Blue.
Blue.
She keeps running.
The color might have at one point been appealing—the symbol of the Royals, the pleasant hue that cloaked a perfect morning. But tonight it just haunted her...chased her...reminded her of the terrible deed that was done.
A horse came over the hills.
“HEY!” a man shouted, mounted on a grey horse. “MA’AM! HALT, PLEASE!”
Crap. She sucked in a breath through her teeth, clutched her limp, burned arm, and kept moving. I just need to reach the trees.
But the chase seemed over before it had even started. When she had first started running from the blue, some wandering captain had stopped her to ask what was wrong. There was a strange kindness in his striking eyes, a forgein concept in this land now stricken with grief, death, and paranoia. In her haste—and possibly shame of what she had done—she had just pushed the captain away and fled. Very inconspicuous…good job me.
Now it seems he had found her again. Any other day she might have commended him for his kindness in checking with some random Sheikah, during the end of the world no less.
But tonight, well...there’s a sliver of her that might have preferred death.
The woman tripped on a divet in the earth, crashing down on one of her badly burned legs, and hissed at the pain. The rain had muddied the path, and was staining her once white clothes a disgusting marron. The pounding of hooves grew closer, until they halted right next to her ears.
A pair of leather boots crashed into the mud.
“Ma’am, don’t get up. You’re injured. Please.”
The clang of metal armour accompanies the voice. Oh he was a captain alright, equipped well for the apocalypse. His metalspear and armour adorned in—
She looks up.
Blue.
A slight frown.
The man tries to help her to her feet, watching to not clutch on the wounds on her right side. “Whatcha doing all the way out here? The nearest settlement is a ways away.” The captain lifts up one of her arms, and his eyes widen just a bit. “Dammit...those burns look bad. We might getcha some aid...there’s a laboratory place nearby that I’m heading by, just due east and—”
“...Lab?” The woman can’t help but wonder aloud. No...you idiot, you can’t be serious.
The captain smiles again. “See now, that’s why I was so eager to catch your attention. You’re running in the wrong direction.” He points in the direction she was running towards. “Up where you’re going is just mountains. There’s a fancy smancy lab a bit south that could help patch you up better than—”
“If you head to that lab, you’ll die.” She lets the words linger for a moment. “Unless, of course, that was the desired plan for the evening.” The woman laughs to herself, but the sound is empty and dry.
He frowns. “...What?”
She’s silent, gears turning in her head. Goddess...how do I say this without—
She points east, the rain pattering on her outstretched sleeve. “Tell me, Captain. What do you see over there?”
The man pauses, his face contort with confusion. He follows her hand and stares at the blue.
“...North Hyrule Plain. Some building glowing blue over there…I’m assuming that’s the techno-wizz from the L—”
“Lab, yes. That would be the Royal Ancient Lab. Though I’m afraid it’s not glowing from ‘techno-wizz’ or anything of that sort, dear captain.”
She crosses her arms, turning to look away from the blue and hugging her knees. “It’s currently burning to the ground.”
An ugly pause, as the man seems to take a moment to digest this. He flickers his gaze between the Sheikah and the distant blue building.
“I-It’s...It’s raining though—”
“Blue flame, I’m afraid, is a bit more resistant. Plus, it’s been burning long before the storm came through.”
“What...I…” The captain sits next to her, plopping into the mud in disbelief. “I was really thinking that...why would…”
He turns to her, his eyes are stormy grey, with faint specks of blue, like embers. The captain’s tone is gravely serious. “Miss, why was that lab destroyed?”
The question catches her off guard. Her jaw’s clenched, but she breaks their staring contest and hides her surprise with a shrug. “Same reason as every other disaster today. Calamity Ganon destroyed it.”
There’s a crack of thunder, and the ground shudders at her lie.
“...No.” the man mumbles.
“Look, I know it’s a lot to process—”
“No, I mean,” he stands, hand reaching for his back, “that’s not what actually happened, is it ma’am?”
Crap. The Sheikah holds her hands in the air. “If this is about me shoving you earlier, I was just a bit—”
“Aw now don’tcha worry about that, I took no personal offense.” He scratches the blond stubble on his chin.
“Now the thing that I do find some mighty fine offense to, is the fact that there’s a good lick of a chance that I’m currently speaking to an arsonist traitor.”
There’s a BOOM, and in the distance, another large piece of the Royal Lab collapses into the earth. The blue grows brighter.
“Me? What in the name of Hylia are you—”
“Let’s not play dumb, ma’am. Trust me, I’m a sucker for some pleasantries and small talk, though I’m afraid addressing the fact that you burned down the nearest safe haven for miles is gonna take priority here.”
The Sheikah woman just fumes, attempting to get up in the captain’s face. “How DARE you accuse me of—”
She’s cut off by the shing of metal cutting through air. The captain twirls the spear on his back and points the end right at her neck, resting just below her chin. She scowls, but puts her hands in the air.
“You just don’t understan—”
“That’s a mighty fine torch you got there…” He clicks his tongue.
Both hands grip his spear steady, ready to pierce flesh at any moment. The captain gestures with a wink to the torch attached to her waist. It seems to still smolder slightly with faint blue embers.
The captain looks between the torch, and the blue fire in the horizon.
“Yes, a mighty fine torch indeed.” He presses the spear tip a bit further forward.
“And it’s glowing a familiar color.”
Cause of Destruction
An Analysis of the Destruction of the Royal Ancient Lab
By Dr. J Kippers
(But please, Kippers was my father, call me Kip)
So heroes are a thing, huh? Who’da thunk it! One minute, I’m continuing my travels, studying some cool rocks and bricks in Hyrule Field. Then the next, a giant malice pig appears and fights some teenage boy wielding a glowing stick. I definitely wasn’t cowering behind the ruins of a garrison bathroom while that all happened, and I definitely was doing some cool badass fighting moves with my...pen, to help that knight and save the world and stuff. Makes for a pretty cool story, yeah? HA, Traysi would kill for it…
But enough of my daring, slightly exaggerated, exploits. It’s been a few weeks since the world’s settled down from the Calamity’s defeat, which means I had prime time to settle back into my hometown, and put my years of travel and research to paper!
I spent the majority of my life studying the history of Hyrule as it fell to the Calamity 100 years ago...and with the world now revitalizing, it’s just prime time to get myself out there! Research wise, that is!
At first, I didn’t really know what to write, cause WOW there’s just so many topics to choose from. Plus there’s a lot on the line here, gotta make a good impression for whatever new kingdom that Princess Zelda’s got planned. She seems the scholarly type, yeah? I’m thinking I could snag some Hyrule history teach’ position at a rebuilt university or something… Princess has got an awful lot of focus on the reconstruction of different village ruins. Which is fair, cause who better to know how to rebuild these places than the people who were alive to see them in their prime!
And you see, that’s where my journey of knowledge began! People with first hand knowledge of the events of distant past are alive? OH a historian’s dream…my soul swells in happiness. Plus, I also got my researcher brain a-tingling. My dad’s friend’s cousin’s neighbor’s grandma’s dog’s breeder knew Dr. Robbie back in the day, so Sheikah tech is basically in my blood.
With these passions rejuvenated I had my goal! Publish some revolutionary new theory that combined my awesome knowledge for history, archeology, and tech! And what better place to see that than, (duh) the Royal Ancient Lab Ruins.
Now, there doesn’t seem to be much in these ruins…it’s absolutely barren. No weapons or treasures to be seen. Just your run-of-the-mill ruined ruins, destroyed long ago by the Calamity. And that was the end of the story.
At least that’s what I thought until I did a little more digging. See, as I was doing some additional research, I stumbled upon this old history/research book stored in the Kakariko archive. I have no idea where it came from...it’s titled...C-Caa...Creation? Creating? Creating a...Cham...it’s kinda faded and hard to read. But anyhow, this weird little history book was written by some guy named “Nine-tendons.” If someone out there has a copy feel free to hit me up, but for today’s sake title and author don’t really matter. The point is, one of the quotes in that book describes the ruins like this:
Royal Ancient Lab Ruins
It is thought that these ruins represent the ancient relic research facility that was under the direct rule of Hyrule Castle, but only the outer walls remain. There is no trace of the building’s interior, let alone any research materials.
The thoroughness of its destruction feels intentional. [Page 396, Cr_ating a Champ___, Nint__do.]
Now I’m not too familiar with the work of whoever Mr. Nin-Ten-doves is, but I strangely trust their word on the topic wholeheartedly. Call it a feeling from the divine if you must, but they’re right! It seems so much more obvious in hindsight.
My adventures into the other various ruins across Hyrule always gave me something to work with. The world is just crafted for exploration. Old treasure chests, weird rocks with a tiny talking tree fairy underneath. Hell, even a monster or two was always happy to inhabit even the smallest of ruins I’ve entered. Yet, there is absolutely nothing of prominence to be seen at the ruins of the Royal Ancient Lab. And I’ve double, triple, and quintuple-checked!
Why are there no rusted weapons...or treasures...or any records or evidence of anything, other than some crude stone walls and a rock? That kind of destruction is just unnecessarily absolute, even for the Calamity.
According to detailed drawings/notes I have in my records of Historical Works during the Age of Calamity (HW AOC for short), the Royal Ancient Lab was nearly three stories tall, with a royal blue ceiling, complete with a basement level, and an upper telescope! With even the smallest of structures (like simple ranch and village ruins) still standing today with plenty of artifacts, why is as great a structure as the Royal Lab so desolate?
Intentional, intentional, intentional...that word ran through my head for days, weeks, months even. Why would the Royal Ancient Lab be destroyed intentionally? Did the Calamity see it as that major a threat? No, that wouldn’t make sense, the movements of Calamity Ganon that day clearly show his intention to use the Sheikah power against the people of Hyrule. An Ancient Lab would be a major benefit, if anything…
So, surprising as it may be, the current prime suspect for the destruction of this lab would actually be…
Tumblr media
The Sheikah just glares. “Well...what gave it away?
He shrugged his shoulders with a half smile. “Deductive reasoning, with a hint of some good ol’ luck perhaps.”
“Listen, I know this looks bad, but you have to understand—”
“Oh I understand quite well alright.” The captain gives a wink. “I try to be humble, but Mama always did say I was the smartest cookie she knew.”
He rests the end of his spear on her collarbone, the threat clearly still present, but it gives him the freedom to pace and wipe rain for his soaked blonde hair.
“See I know that Calamity Ganon’s corrupted every bit of Sheikah tech from here to Lurelin. I know that he’s been targeting Hylian settlements. ‘Seen it myself when some monsters and Guardians destroyed my regiment and post at Maritta Exchange, just a bit north from here. I know that the only reason the other settlements, like the Rito and Zora, are still standing is because Ganon’s focusing all his forces on finding and killing the Hylian Champion and the princess. And finally I know that because of that, there is not a Guardian or monster around for many a mile. I mean, just lookie over there.”
The woman turns her head, and sure enough, the plains are barren of all life. No movement of machine or beast or person.
“And now my assumption was—and do pardon me if my monologue is redundant to your traitor ears—that the nearest place of safety would be this royal laboratory of technology. It’s Sheikah run, so it wouldn’t be immediately targeted. Plus the last thing the Calamity would want is for his personal army of destruction to be...well, destroyed. Ifs I was them evil cloud demon thing, I woulda wanted the lab with all my corrupted techno babble soldiers to be kept in peak condition. However…”
The captain turns to the right, staring at the blazing blue building in the distance. “...That does not seem to be the case.”
The Sheikah opens her mouth to speak, but he holds up the spear again. “Now I’m thinking, the only reason someone would go about destroying that lab, would perhaps be to kill some people, no?”
“We didn’t—”
“Getting rid of the people who could possibly reverse the Guardian corruption...now I suppose that might be a good evil plan.”
“It was for the be—”
“Ma’am I’m all about looking on the bright side of things, but,” the captain flicks his head in the direction of the blue, “This ain’t exactly the light a’ hope I was wanting.”
“Maybe not, but—”
“So,who are ya? Yiga?”
“No, it’s—”
“Solo treason then. You getting revenge on someone ‘round here? A noble? The King? Or perhaps you’re just the sadistic type with the whole—”
“NO!”
The outburst surprises the both of them, and he hold the spear to ner neck firmly. Another crack of thunder reminds them of the silence that’s endured. The Sheikah finally sighs.
“Perhaps by definition I am an arsonist and a traitor, but for one thing, I wasn’t alone.”
The man’s eyes shine curiously, but she continues.
“I will gladly die alongside them, as my actions have only been for the benefit of Hyrule.”
The rain’s tempo quickens as she gets on her feet, but the captain doesn’t strike. She stares him down, eyes hidden behind strands of white hair.
“My name is Atsuko, a devoted researcher at the Royal Lab, and you may kill me if you think it just.”
Tumblr media
Ok, now I know what you’re all thinking. You’re thinking “Kip! Why are you writing this official research paper like some drunken bar rant? How the hell are you gonna get noticed at this rate?” or “Kip! The hell are you thinking?? Sheikah destroying the Ancient Lab makes absolutely no sense?!”
So to that I say, firstly, uhhh you’re welcome for not being a boring posh, snobby lecturer.(Learned to value a personality over fancy words; lessons my granddad).
As for the latter, you are quite wrong my dear friend, quite wrong indeed. It makes an absolute butt-load of sense, and I’m gonna prove it was them, here and now! I mean that’s...kinda the whole point of an essay, yeah?
My fellow archeology, history, and tech lovers, not only do I know who is responsible for the Royal Lab’s destruction, but I know the true reason why and how! Let us start at the beginning!
What exactly is the lab, and what was its purpose? Well, as the name implies, it was a Sheikah-run laboratory under the hand of the royal family that researched and experimented with Ancient technology. Again, looking at references in HW AOC, I can place not only Guardian models and Ancient weaponry at the lab, but also the existence of blue flame lamps that seemingly powered the facility.
As we all know, it’s tough to mess around with Ancient parts without blue flame, which is the prime energy source for the Ancient Sheikah. Such are the existence of today’s Hateno and Akkala tech labs, located near blue flame furnaces. However! This brings into question exactly why the Royal Lab was constructed where it was…
There are only three places in all of Hyrule with natural blue flame deposits, or otherwise called “Ancient Furnaces.” That would be in Hateno, Akkala, and within Hyrule Castle itself. So why is the Royal Tech Lab so far from these Ancient Furnaces?
To answer this question, might I direct your attention towards explosions. That’s right folks, I’m talking bombs! (Please take this moment to imagine me creating an accompanying explosive sound effect with my mouth)
Some time ago, as I was analyzing the blue flame lamps in Deep Akkala, I ran into that hero of legend face to face! Nice guy, quiet and charming type. Smelled strangely like apples and burnt guts.
Long story short, I traded my entire supply of Hot-Footed Frogs and arrows for a chance to mess with his Sheikah Slate for a bit.
So during that brief period of research, I discovered that while Sheikah tech is usually well controlled—with bomb runes only going off on command by the push of a button—there is an exception! Bomb runes instantly react with blue flame, just one touch and they’ll instantly explode! Try it out yourself! Er, well. Ok, maybe not. Don’t do that, legally I’m not responsible. Plus, it’s not like any of you folk out there have access to bomb runes or a Sheikah Slate that you can play around and test it out for yourself like it’s some virtual game that you can switch around in your hands.
Bomb runes are giant bundles of compact Sheikah tech. When in contact with a pure blue flame, they go boom. The process with the Sheikah Slate must simplify this process with a remote button, but as I’ve discovered, the process can be hastened by chucking a torch around.
I call this phenomenon of blue flame reacting destructively with Sheikah technology a “blue combustion!” I’m creative, I know.
I imagine, any experimentation with weapons that harness, compress, or just generally mess with Sheikah tech and lasers, must be conducted in an environment that prevents blue combustion. You don’t want pure blue flame touching stuff. Otherwise you go kaboom.
Now I couldn’t get a hold of Dr. Robbie or Director Purah myself, something about how they “don’t know who the heck” I am, and “you’re trespassing please get off it’s private property,” or something of the sort, I’m not really sure. But even without their testimonies, you’ll notice that their large tech labs are constructed a distance away from the actual Ancient Furnace. They aren’t right beside it. If they were, you risk losing a limb to a blue combustion. That is also why blue flame lamps exist: to stagger the distance between the flames. And thus is why the Royal Lab isn’t nearby an Ancient Furnace.
Yet even so, the distance the Royal Lab has from an Ancient Furnace might still stump you, because even compared to the Akkala and Hateno labs, it is very very far. But here’s the kicker, my dear curious readers and poor editor, the reason for this extreme distance is because during its prime, the Royal Ancient Lab housed a large portion of the Guardian army and weaponry. It needed more distance because its contents accumulated a much larger space. I can prove this not only by descriptions shown in HW AOC, but also by notes/drawings shown in the archive called the Backgrounds of Technological Wonders, or BOTW for short.
Both these sources show that while Guardians were tested and stationed in Hyrule Castle, the number of Guardians at the castle was probably only in the one hundred mark or less. Now that may seem like a lot, but remember, hundreds of Guardians were dug up, as especially shown in the famous Sheikah tapestry of 10,000 years ago. Arguably even thousands, considering that tapestry is a simplification.
So if we can only account for only a portion of the Guardian population at Hyrule Castle, where are the rest? Scattered across different garrisons perhaps, sure. But they’d mainly be in the facility where each of the Guardians were constructed and given power, the place full of the most talented Sheikah researchers, a location that would still be in decent proximity, but still a safe distance from the castle should an emergency arise: the Royal Ancient Tech Lab. That’s where most of Guardians are.
Now, why is this important? Why did I just spend a few paragraphs talking about blue flames and Guardians and locations when this is about the lab’s destruction and demise?
It’s because this is my sure fire way to prove to you that the Calamity did not destroy the Royal Lab.
The Royal Ancient Lab was constructed specifically to create the best Guardians and technology to beat the Calamity with.
It would have been constructed specifically to avoid any fatal blue combustion accidents.
And it sure as hell wouldn’t have been purposefully destroyed by the Calamity, the one entity who would benefit from its existence.
The lab was decimated by a blue combustion, no question. There isn’t anything as powerful as it that could destroy a place so completely. And now knowing the factors surrounding the lab itself, we know that if it was destroyed by a combustion, it was not because of an accident.
It could only have been done purposefully, by the only people who would know the Royal Lab’s weaknesses.
It could only have been brought down by the Sheikah researchers.
So now, the questions of exactly how and why remain.
Tumblr media
The captain just stands and ponders.
“Ma’am, I must confess that I don’t find the science of the destruction nearly as interesting as exactly what made you decide to do it.”
“It’s like I said,” Atsuko clutches her burned arm, “It wasn’t just me. Really, now, you’re too kind to give me so much credit.”
The spear end moves closer to her neck. “Alright alright alright, sorry, pal. Look I have no idea if you’re even believing all this right now, but you have to trust me that our actions were of the best intentions.”
The captain smirks. “Do tell?”
Tumblr media
According to BOTW, the Ancient Arrow was developed by Dr. Robbie as one of the most powerful means of combating the Calamity itself. In fact, according to research I’ve found in that CAC book by Mint-en-do, I can place the exact time for the development of this weapon, which I can use to glean information about it’s properties.
Ancient Arrow
Perhaps forty or fifty years after the day of the Great Calamity Robbie, the lead Guardian researcher, created the first weapon that was effective against the mechanical monsters: the ancient arrow... Flames come out from the burner like bit [of the Ancient Arrow] and form a blade. [Page 388 and 178, Cr_ating a Champ___, Nint__do.]
The arrow instantly vaporizes whatever it comes into contact with, tearing apart the subject by the molecule, and sending them to non-existence. The description of the weapon implies that it is the pure energy of a blue flame, and built quite differently than other Sheikah weapons.
And the difference definitely shows. I’ve handled a few of these puppies myself, and let me tell you, they get the job done. While an Ancient sword or axe will certainly do some damage, a single Ancient Arrow can take out a Guardian, or even a Lynel in one hit. I heard that they could even do major damage to Dark Beast Ganon itself!
Now, why do I bring this up? Because this Ancient Arrow proves that the Sheikah 100 years ago knew about the dangers of blue combustion.
An Ancient Arrow is clearly the result of intensive research into blue combustion, it is literally a pure blue flame on a stick pumped up with some Ancient Tech. It vaporizes whatever matter it touches and it ceases to exist.
Hmm...would be a fine explanation as to why the nearly three stories worth of stone and ceiling in the Royal Lab no longer can be found.
And why wasn’t the Ancient Arrow developed sooner? It’s because no one thought to purposefully cause an event that would destroy everything until they were forced to on the actual day of the Calamity. It’s because it took even the most brilliant of scientists half a century to even contain a feat of destruction into a single arrowtip? Yes...when you lay out the facts like that, it seems to make sense on the timeline.
Ah, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Back to the question of “why?” Let me rewind to an earlier point. Where are the thousands of Guardians in Hyrule?
Yes, a good hundred or so could be found in Hyrule Castle, and the majority were in the Royal Ancient Lab. But today, where are they? Records in BOTW cite only 157 Guardian remains in all of Hyrule. 157. How? That’s impossible. Witnesses and notes in HW AOC prove that much, much more existed. And what’s more is that we know that the majority of those Guardians were at the Royal Lab, but there are no Guardians, active or otherwise, to be found there. There is nothing.
It’s almost as if all those Guardians were vaporized, they ceased to exist one day.
And you know what.
They did.
(Please take this time to imagine me winking)
There’s some theme or metaphor here about the Royal Ancient Lab, constructed in the blues of the Royal family, ironically being destroyed by the blue combustion—but what do I look like, a writer? Find your own secret to life, here’s the blunt of it.
The Sheikah knew about the dangers a blue combustion could do, but on the day of the Calamity, they used that knowledge for the better. Seeing the corrupted Guardians in the distant castle, it is my belief that the researchers there purposefully brought the blue flames—that they had so carefully separated outside in the lanterns—in contact with Ancient Technology. Things not only went kaboom, but the actual matter ceased to exist. A giant Ancient Arrow.
Thousands of Guardians, hundreds of blades and weapons, and honestly, probably even lives, were gone in an instant. The only remains of the carnage would be the aftermath of blue flames that spread across the remains of the outer walls.
The Sheikah did this because it would save the most lives. That’s hundreds and thousands of Guardians and machines that wouldn’t fall into Ganon’s clutches, hundreds of souls saved. Did you know that today Hyrule Ridge, the home of the Royal Lab, has zero Guardians? Did you know that the lands near it, Hebra and Tabantha, have the lowest Guardian sightings in all of Hyrule? Even less than the Gerudo Desert. And I cite this all based on my hours of research and facts laid out by BOTW, HW AOC, and the divine work by Mr. Nin-ten-do
But even beyond that, how do I know, in absolute 600% certainty that the Sheikah were in complete control of this destruction? How am I so sure that the Sheikah that day had fully planned the intentional obliviation of their lab?
It’s because...I lied earlier.
There is actually one relic that survived. One little monument of the Royal Ancient Lab Ruins. One object giving physical proof of this theory.
One artifact that would have been impossible to preserve if the Sheikah hadn’t planned it all. I mentioned it briefly before, if you paid attention. Yes! This object is present in both the Royal Lab, and a tech lab of today. You could see it for yourself, if you pay a visit to my dad’s friend’s cousin’s neighbor’s grandma’s dog’s breeder’s Sheikah researcher pal...
Tumblr media
“Dr. Robbie’s telescope.” Atsuko pointed to the scattered trees in upper Lindor, “Some other scientists took it up there to preserve it. It’s the only reason we were able to see the initial Guardian corrupting in the distant castle, and how we were able to adapt to the situation and act so quickly.”
The captain glanced at the western mountain. “So you were running up there to meet with them?”
“The wilderness is pretty safe at the moment. And we’re hoping eventually we could take the telescope to another lab where we could possibly continue research. I mean just today from the combustion, Dr. Robbie had this idea for some fancy Sheikah dagger to kill Guardians.”
Silence.
“OK listen, that’s...that’s all I’ve got. You can head up there and confirm the story, or just kill me now, take your pick. Waiting for judgement here.”
More silence. The rain falls harder.
“...I’m—”
“You can call me Cian.” The captain does a little bow. “Captain Cian Kippers, at your leisure.”
Atsuko raises an eyebrow. “Like the color—?”
“Sp-Spelled differently! There’s an “i” in there, and perhaps it’s ironic to the situation, but I figured if we’re gonna be traveling up there together you should have the courtesy of knowing my name.”
She just sputters for a moment. “So...you—”
“I trust your heart—I like to think I’m good with character—and I believe you’re a good person doing your best in the world. As unfortunate as circumstances may have been.” He twirls his spear before fitting it on his back. Cian extends a hand to her which she takes. “People like that are getting rarer by the hour, so I don’t think I should be adding to the death count.”
“So…” she gets on her feet, cocking her head, “You...you believe me then?”
He chuckles. “Well, I didn’t kill you did I?”
Atsuko laughs quietly. “Your mistake…”
“...No.” Cian places a reassuring hand on her shoulder and smiles, as if to say that somehow everything was gonna be alright.
“My intention.”
Idk why I want it, but. Mipha and Von??? Maybe something spicy?
Weird choice, but hey! Let's mix things up! I mean, I will lewd anyone if asked, so!
Von could behave himself. For the most part. That's what he was telling himself when he was helping Mipha out. Link was out of Hyrule, something about family or whatever, and Kohga, ever the sweet dude, wanted to make sure Mipha had someone to help out. So, Von was in charge of being at her beck and call. Though he was excited, he kinda realized he wasn't the best choice. Because as he was standing there, in her kitchen, he kept checking her out.
Not that it was his fault. She was a cute little lady. Small, sweet, like fresh cherries, and when you combine that with an ass like that, well, he definitely wanted to pop that cherry. But he recalled Kohga's words, vividly;
'If you don't behave yourself, I'm going to tie your dick to a sand seal, and let it fucking run off'
Yeah. Kohga REALLY cared for Mipha.
"Von? I hate to bother you- could you fetch the smoked paprika for me?"
"Sure, sure. The second you stop calling yourself a bother, that is."
She smiled a bit as she contuined her cooking.
"Apologies. I'm just not used to having a man to 'boss around' as Kohga put it. It feels so excessive, I don't expect Zora soldiers to be so ready for an order."
Von shrugged as he reached up to grab the spice she asked, bringing it to the table.
"Eh, you know Kohga. He just wants to make sure you're pampered. Like a sugar daddy, but without the sugar. So like. Splenda daddy I guess-you get my point."
She nodded, a bit of a giggle at her lips. Von didn't know why but...she always laughed at his jokes. No one really did that. He leaned over the counter, lightly bumping her with his hip.
"You like laughing at my jokes, don't ya?"
"You have great humor. My father always said great humor meant an even better heart."
Her eyes went to his chest, before her cheeks flared up, and she returned to her food. Was she just checking out his chest? Nah. Had to be just in his head. He pulled back a bit, realizing he was sort of making her uncomfortable.
"It's uh...good saying. Er, imma go hang out on your couch, come get me if you need me, yeah?"
She nodded, and he exited the kitchen. He hopped onto the sofa, and pulled out the slate. Message from Master Kohga.
'How is she doing? Is she missing Link?'
'If she does, she's not telling me. She seems fine rn, she's making dinner for us. I offered, but she's more stubborn than I thought'
'That's my girl. And YOU'RE behaving, right?'
'I'm being more of a gentleman than I've ever been. Hell, I took the groceries in for her, held open doors and shit- my mama would be proud to see me. If she wasn't blind'
'Just making sure. Glad I picked you for this, hate the idea of her being lonely. Keep me updated, if she looks like she needs ANYTHING, you tell me.'
'Got it boss, ttyl'
He was about to look through some random videos online, when Mipha cried out from the kitchen.
"Von! Dinner's ready!"
He got off the couch, and walked into the kitchen. She set the table up, real fancy looking. Von wasn't a picky eater, so anything she'd make would've been welcomed-
"Are those...pork cutlets?"
"Yes! Kohga told me they were your favorite, and I wanted to thank you for dealing-er, spending so much time with me. You've been kind."
"Huh. No wonder Kohga likes you so much. Well, thanks, I appreciate that."
Von sat at the table, and tucked in. Usually he had better table manners, but holy SHIT was this good pork. Mipha barely touched her food before Von started to pig out, and it clearly amused her.
"Oh, you eat just like Link does. He loves my food."
"I can see why- this is honestly SO good, he's lucky he gets to eat this all day."
"Oh I've never made pork cutlets before."
Von's surprise clearly amused her, and he was so surprised, he had to put his bowl down.
"This is your FIRST try? Ganon, you're a talented lady. Link is real lucky to have someone like you."
"That's very kind of you. Genuinely."
He nodded, before choosing to just shut up and eat. He finished his bowl so fast, he wanted to eat it all over again. She pushed a plate of vegetables towards him, nodding.
"Don't forget your vegetables, now."
"If you made it, I sure as shit won't-er, sorry. Don't tell Kohga I swore, he might beat my ass."
She chuckled as he practically destroyed those vegetables. They were seasoned perfectly, cooked till soft-he could eat this stuff like pigs could eat slop.
"I won't. Believe it or not Von, I'm not some innocent flower as many think. Oh, you got a mess on your shirt."
He looked down at his clothes, and realized he did in fact, drop something on his shirt, leaving a grease stain. He was about to grab a napkin, when she did it for him. As in, she put one hand on his chest, and using his other hand to dab at the spot.
"I'll throw your things in the wash. But you need to dab it first, lest the stain...sets."
Her eyes met his. She had such pretty eyes. Amber, much like her brother's, only softer. He hesitated, unsure of what to do, before she suddenly pulled away, suddenly looking stiff as a board, before she turned, digging into the fridge.
"H-hey, why don't we have some dessert? I got this recipe from Kohga!"
What was that. What the shit was happening? He shook his head. Maybe he was just imagining things. She came back with a rather pretty looking banana cream pie, and he watched as she licked a bit of whipped cream on her finger. She had such a cute little tongue. Not that he was paying attention, he had pie to eat.
----------------------------
He didn't know when he woke up. He just knew that when he did, that there was a reason for it. He slept in the guest bedroom, while Mipha slept in her own. He got up, decided to just stick to his underwear and mask, and walked into the living room. It was dark. He tried to listen. There was...whimpering. It was slight, but it was there. He was slow as he walked to her bedroom, and opened the door. He wished he knocked. Why?
Because Mipha was currently in there, fucking a dildo that was stuck to the wall. She stood there, bouncing on it while one hand covered her mouth, and the other held onto the bed in front of her. He should be looking away, at least SAY something so she could stop. But he just sat there, watching. She looked good, cheeks all red, eyes all hazy, and her pussy leaking all over the toy.
He didn't even mean to start touching himself. He just. Did. He was stroking himself, just so fucking jealous of that toy fucking such a cute pussy.
"Just a little more, please, I'm so close, I'm so close-"
He wanted her to cum. He wanted to watch that face when she climaxed. But instead, he watched her face as she saw him there.
"VON-"
She was so surprised, she fell to the floor with a rather loud 'thud'. Kohga was gonna fucking kill him. He jumped into the room, and immediately dove down to see if she was okay, not noticing that he just pinned her underneath him.
"Oh no no- Mipha, are you okay? Are you hurt?"
Her eyes met his, and he felt her hot breath tickle his lips. She spoke not a word. She just looked at him, and wrapped her arm around his neck. He couldn't take it anymore. He picked her up off the floor, tossed her onto her bed, and grabbed her cute ankles. He pushed them till they were at the side of her head, and slipped his dick right inside of her.
"You're...m-much bigger than the toy-!"
She whimpered her words, and In a hot second, she was crying for him, practically worshipping him for every thrust inside of her. She was so small, he saw himself bulge inside of her, and he filled her up effortlessly. He buried his face in her neck, loving how she smelled like water lillies.
"You don't need some stupid toy. I'll fuck you. I'll fuck this cute little pussy, I'll stuff it full. You just ask, and I'll fucking give it to you."
She was so wet, she was soaking the sheets below them, she was so loud, he swore people outside could hear her fucking getting it. It was even hotter when she dug her claws right into his back, just the way he liked it. And her bashful nature...suddenly wasn't so bashful. Her small, delicate lips turned into a snarl full of sharp teeth, and her voice was damn near demanding.
"Harder. I want to be properly fucked, and be properly fucked NOW."
He'd be a shitty gentleman if he refused a request from his lady. So, he gave her harder. He gave her faster. He fucked her exactly like she deserved, and when she was close, he reached a hand down below, and rubbed her cute little clit. And he was right. Mipha looked SO cute when she came. Her toes curled, her eyes went hazy, and her pussy clenched around his cock, damn near squeezing the cum from him. How he held it in was a total miracle. He spoke somehow, through his panting and through his sweating.
"I-i didn't ask, should I c-cum inside or-"
She put her hand on his chest, pushing him off. He thought she was mad somehow, only to get on her knees, and wrap her small chest around his cock, pushing him back and forth. No fucking way. He was getting a tit job from a PRINCESS. And he got to finish, all over her face and her chest. He sat there, cock still twitching from his damn good orgasm, when he realized.
NOW Kohga was gonna fucking kill him.
Entrance to the Forbidden City
This is a one shot Breath of the Wild AU, where Thomas is Link and is seeking a way into the Gerudo city. Close the the city, he encounters someone who might be able to help him. At this point, I have no plans to continue this, but you never know.
Taglist: @alastaircarstairsdefenselawyer @foxglove-airmid @alastair-esfandiyar-carstairs1 @justanormaldemon @styxdrawings @ipromiseiwillwrite @a-dream-dirty-and-bruised @alastair-appreciation-month @writeordie-4 @amchara
Thomas sheathed his sword as he entered the Kara Kara Bazaar. He wouldn’t be needing it here, he hoped, but during his travels he’d learnt to always be on guard. Calamity Ganon was growing stronger, and with him increased the number of monster attacks, not to mention he’d heard the rumors the yiga clan was active in the Gerudo Desert. His next stop should be Gerudo City, but there was a problem. For centuries, the famous city of the Gerudo had forbidden entrance to men. Thomas believed it had something to do with previous evil kings leading the Gerudo into pointless wars, but there hadn’t been male Gerudo in centuries. He needed to speak to the chief about appeasing Vah Naboris and freeing Urbosa so he could defeat Calamity Ganon, but lately the Gerudo had been on high guard and the chief would not be leaving the city.
He’d come to the Kara Kara Bazaar instead, a place where the Gerudo traded with Hylian men who were not permitted entrance to the city in the hopes of finding someone who knew another, secret way into the city. Thomas didn’t want to harm the Gerudo and respected their customs, but he liked to belief this was a life and death situation. He overheard a couple of Hylian men.
The Bazaar was a nice place centered around an oasis. A little Gerudo girl was swimming in the water, and Thomas would like to go for a swim later. The desert heat had proven a bit much for him and he was glad for the shade the buildings offered. Most of the traders were seated outside on carpets, displaying their wares.
‘It’s impossible to get inside,’ one of the Hylian men argued.
Thomas was not included in the conversation, but the men did not have the good sense to keep their voices down.
‘There are rumors, of a man in the city,’ another said. ‘There must be some truth to it.’
‘Even if you could get past the gates, I imagine traversing a city full of Gerudo women might be dangerous,’ Thomas said. ‘They’re quite handy with their spears and scimitars and would not look kindly to men sneaking in.’
‘You make a fine point,’ one of the men begrudgingly admitted.
‘Better to send messages through my wife,’ another said. ‘None of this hassle of getting in the city, I bring my goods here and if I need anything from the city, my wife makes the journey.’
Thomas, of course, didn’t have a wife. He’d woken up from a long slumber not long ago and had been fighting monsters and traveling Hyrule ever since. Not to mention he was not attracted to women.
‘I’ll have to find another way in then,’ Thomas said. ‘For I don’t have a wife to ask favors of.’
‘In that case, you might want to talk to that Gerudo girl over there,’ one of the men said. ‘The one selling cakes. Rumor has it she can get you inside the city, but she refuses to talk to any of us, she will only sell us her cakes.’
Thomas followed the man’s gaze to a lone girl with a golden brown skin sitting on a patterned Gerudo carpet. She wore a purple veil that covered both her hair and her face from the nose down, combined with a short purple top and a white sirwal Thomas knew was popular among Gerudo. Her stomach was bare, and Thomas realized that despite being slim, she was quite muscular. She wore lots of jewelry, a pair of topaz earrings. Thomas had been looking into getting a pair of his own as he’d been told they offered shock resistance.
She looked up, caught his stare. She had beautiful dark eyes, he noticed. He rarely looked at girls that way, he wasn’t sure what was different now.
‘She seems into you,’ one of the men said. ‘I say grab your chance, Gerudo girls are said to be hard to get.’
Thomas left the men behind, growing a little uncomfortable with their conversation, and sat down on the carpet beside the girl. He was aware that might be odd or too forward, but he needed to speak to her.
‘Seen something you like?’ she said.
Her voice was a little deeper than he’d expected of a girl, but perhaps that was because she was Gerudo. Thomas didn’t know how to respond. Was she flirting with him?
‘I like men,’ Thomas said.
He preferred being direct, and this way it would be clear he didn’t like her flirting, if that was what she’d intended to do.
The girl laughed. ‘I meant the cakes. As for your preferences… that shouldn’t be a problem.’
Thomas looked at the person in front of him. ‘You’re not a girl,’ he said.
‘Never claimed I was,’ the boy said. ‘My name’s Alastair.’
Gerudo males were rare, some said they didn’t even exist. Of course, it had been a hundred years and Thomas barely remembered anything. Perhaps Alastair was the first male Gerudo centuries. Or perhaps there were more of them nowadays.
‘Why are you dressed like a girl?’ Thomas asked and he realized that might be a stupid question.
‘I like these clothes,’ Alastair said. ‘And considering there are no male Gerudo, you can hardly say these clothes are gendered, are they? I think it’s nonsense for clothes to be gendered, yet so many male Hylians would rather die than put this on. I say, their loss, I look great. Besides, I’d die in the desert heat if I had to wear that tunic of yours. Not that it doesn’t look well on you.’
Thomas smiled. ‘Right. Sorry, I’m Thomas. And you’re right, what I’m wearing is pretty hot. I actually traversed the desert without my shirt, but I figured that would be indecent here.’
‘Now that’s something I wish I could have seen,’ Alastair said. ‘You could go for a swim here if you want.’
Thomas felt his cheeks flush. Was Alastair flirting with him? He had to admit, Alastair was very attractive, although he couldn’t see most of his face. A few locks of ink black hair escaped his veil, framing his face.
‘I’m looking for a way to get inside Gerudo city,’ Thomas said. ‘Do you know how? Wait, you must be forbidden entry as well, right? You’re a man too, even if you’re Gerudo.’
‘I’m not Gerudo,’ Alastair said.
Thomas frowned. ‘Really? You kind of look Gerudo.’
‘If I were, I’d be a lot taller. And my hair would be red, not black. No, I’m Hylian,’ Alastair said. ‘But I live around here, work for the Gerudo chief. I grew up in Hateno village, but I like it here better.’
‘Even if you’re not allowed in the city?’ Thomas asked.
‘You mistook me for a girl,’ Alastair pointed out. ‘I can go in the city whenever I like as long as I wear this. It’s almost time for me to pack up. Why don’t you join me for dinner? We can have whatever I don’t sell for desert.’
Thomas smiled awkwardly. He was very much interested in having dinner with Alastair and not only because Alastair might help him get inside Gerudo city.
One of the men he’d spoken to earlier came by to buy a mighty fruit cake. As it was made with banana, it increased someone’s strenght for a while. Thomas had always been interested in the strange way cooking meals and elixirs could come with beneficial effects.
‘Fond of bananas, are you?’ Alastair asked while scribbling something down.
‘My favorite,’ the man said with a smile. ‘Can’t get enough of them.’
He helped Alastair box the remainder of his cakes, and they went inside. The house was small, with a two person bed, kitchen and table all in the same room, and a small door leading to a bathroom. One wall was decorated with several Gerudo spears.
Alastair removed his veil and put it in a closet. His black hair reached his shoulders, falling in soft locks. Thomas wondered if only male Gerudo had dark hair. As far as he knew all Gerudo women had red hair. He was pretty, Thomas had always loved the combination of dark hair and eyes, and he once again wondered about Alastair’s possible interest in him. He’d definitely been flirting, right? But Thomas didn’t have time for romance, he reminded himself. Lucie was in Hyrule Castle all by herself, holding back the calamity. She needed his help as soon as possible. He was here to appease Vah Naboris.
‘I’ve been selling lots of fruit cakes with banana in them,’ Alastair said. ‘Bad news.’
Thomas frowned. ‘How is that bad?’
‘The yiga clan is said to be fond of them,’ Alastair said. ‘Have you heard of them?’
The yiga clan was a group of evil sheikah dedicated to resurrecting Calamity Ganon and destroying the Hylian champion. Thomas knew who they were, considering they were all after him.
‘I am familiar with them,’ Thomas said. ‘Fought off a couple of their foot soldiers during my travels.’
‘You’re very brave,’ Alastair said. ‘The real reason I’m here, selling cakes, is to investigate them. Hylian men come here, yes, but so do the yiga. I’ve had my eye on that man who bought the banana cake for a while. He’s been here on and off for some time, and the time intervals wouldn’t allow him to travel all the way to a Hylian town. He could come from the Gerudo Canyon Stables, perhaps, but the traveling distance would also match up with the hideout of the yiga clan.’
Thomas’ eyes went wide. ‘You know where their hideout is?’
Alastair gathered some materials onto the stove, Thomas could recognize hylian rice, goron spice and some vegetables.
‘Not yet,’ Alastair said as he added everything into his cooking pot and put on the stove. ‘We know it’s somewhere north of Gerudo city, and they’ve been around a lot. My sister’s been fighting them off, but not long ago they stole the thunder helmet, an heirloom to the Gerudo chief’s family.’
Thomas wondered how Alastair knew so much about the Gerudo. He claimed not to be one, yet dressed like one, seemed familiar with their customs and heritage.
‘I could help retrieve it,’ Thomas offered. ‘I’m familiar with the yiga clans’ fighting style, and am quite accomplished with this sword.’
Finding the master sword had been quite a journey, as Lucie had taken it back to Korok Forest. To find it, he’d had to traverse the lost woods in the north.
‘Good. I like your sword, it looks good. But first, I should introduce you to my sister,’ Alastair said. ‘The chief of the Gerudo.’
Thomas frowned. ‘You said you weren’t Gerudo.’
‘I’m not, my mother is,’ Alastair said. ‘And so is my sister.’
‘I’m confused,’ Thomas said.
‘Gerudo men are extremely rare, none have been born in centuries,’ Alastair said. ‘Gerudo women usually find Hylian men to be their lovers and have children. My mother was different, she was married to my father and lived with him in Hateno village, but she returned to her hometown not long ago. Anyway, this means all Gerudo have a non Gerudo father, and most only give birth to daughters. I’m the exception, but I’m Hylian, even if I do look a lot like my mother. Although you could say that culturally, I’m more Gerudo than Hylian.’
‘That’s weird,’ Thomas said. ‘I had no idea it worked like that. I always thought the children of a Gerudo are always Gerudo.’
‘Most of the time,’ Alastair said. ‘My sister is Gerudo like our mother, I’m Hylian like our father, even if I look like the Hylian version of my mother. People are always very confused. Since the chief of the Gerudo is my sister, I can get you an audience with her, no problem.’
‘Is that why they said you could help me get inside?’ Thomas asked.
‘I’ve spread that rumor myself, actually, to draw out the yiga,’ Alastair said. ‘Unfortunately, they still got in somehow to steal the thunder helmet. But I recognize you, you’re the Hylian champion and you carry the sword that seals the darkness. However, that won’t get you into the city.’
‘You know who I am?’ Thomas asked.
To most people, the Hylian champion was just a story, someone who’d died a hundred years ago. The Zora recognized him, of course, for to them a hundred years wasn’t much and most Zora from back then still lived. He’d encountered his cousin Christopher too, a renown Sheikah researcher of ancient technology who’d accidently turned himself into a six year old. But beyond them, people didn’t know who he was.
‘I recognize that sword. I’ve always been interested in weapons, although I prefer spears myself,’ Alastair said, gesturing to his collection. ‘My sister will be quite interested in you as well. But you can’t walk in like this.’
‘So, then how?’ Thomas asked.
Alastair smirked. ‘I think I have a veil and outfit that would fit you lying around here somewhere.’
Thomas frowned. ‘I’m not slim or feminine like you. No one’s going to believe I’m a girl, not with these shoulders.’
‘You’re right, your shoulders are quite extra ordinary,’ Alastair said. ‘But it’ll be fine. I think at this point, about half the city knows I’m not a girl, but as long as I dress like one no one kicks me out. Besides, Gerudo women are very tall and muscular.’
‘So all these men claiming it’s impossible, they could just put on some feminine clothes and they could go in? And they never realized?’
Some of them had facial hair, but Thomas imagined the veil would conceal that as well. He couldn’t imagine anyone would believe he was a woman ever, not with his height, his broad shoulders Alastair thought were extra ordinary. But according to Alastair, that didn’t matter as long as he was willing to dress like a girl. Alastair had a point though, clothes being gendered was strange.
Alastair rolled his eyes. ‘Most men are far too proud of their so called masculinity to dress in women’s clothes. Never mind that any Gerudo woman could defeat them in battle with their eyes closed. You seem like a strong warrior though, watching you fight a Gerudo warrior might be interesting.’
‘Thank you. You seem strong too. Do you often use your spears in battle?’
‘I am currently undercover, but I do fight. I travel sometimes, and these days anyone should be able to defend themselves if they wish to survive outside the few cities that remain.’
‘True,’ Thomas said. ‘I’ve encountered monsters everywhere lately.’
‘Ever defeated a molduga?’ Alastair asked. ‘My sister and I have. They’re very large and live in the desert, killing unsuspecting travelers. They are sensitive to shifts in the sands and will know where you are in an instant.’
‘I can’t say I have,’ Thomas said. ‘But I’m willing to give it a try. My ultimate goal is to defeat Calamity Ganon though.’
‘I hope you succeed,’ Alastair said. ‘If you ever need help, or someone to accompany on your journey, I’m more than willing.’
‘It would be dangerous,’ Thomas said.
‘Have you seen my spears? I defeated a molduga with those,’ Alastair said. ‘And my sister is even stronger a warrior than me. I’m better at stealth too, so if you need to break into the yiga hideout unseen you could use my help.’
Thomas guessed he should take Alastair up on that offer, he could always use extra help. His journeys could get lonely, would Alastair be willing to come with him beyond a trip to the yiga clan hideout?
‘Alright,’ Thomas said. ‘We can go together after I speak to your sister. When do we leave?’
Alastair made two plates of the food he’d made, and Thomas thankfully ate some curry. It didn’t have any special effects, but he loved eating food with goron spice.
‘After dinner. I think it’s best to start searching for the hideout early tomorrow morning, or it’ll get too hot. Or, and I think this is a pretty solid idea, we wait until it’s so hot you’ll have no choice but to take off your shirt.’
Thomas smiled. ‘Let’s go early. Not that I don’t want you to see… I just don’t think it would be practical, and we only just met…’
‘Don’t worry, I’m just joking. But you should go out with me sometime after we defeat Calamity Ganon.’
‘You’re going to help me?’ Thomas asked.
‘Of course,’ Alastair said. ‘If we break into the yiga clan hide out and wreak some havoc, I won’t have to go undercover as a cake vendor anymore. I’m sure Cordelia won’t mind if I join you.’
Astor nodded. He and paced the hall and muttered under his breath.
“I see...I never meddled in the realm of technology...but to think that Sheikah Technology could hold such a secret.” He tapped his chin, staring at the astrolabe on the other side of the dungeon bars. “I suppose it makes sense. The advanced accomplishments and feats that such technology is capable of...it’s only naturally that it is powered by unconventional means.”
Siv spun the Sheikah Core on his index finger like it was a ball. “Yeeeep. I’m guessing that’s what allowed the super old dudes to beat the Calamity all those years ago.” He shook his head. “So, yeah. Dick Lord Ganon is gonna use that to turn the Guardians and Divine Beasts against us. And even if the science peeps keep researching into them...well.” He looked up at Astor. “Obviously, they would never figure out this crucial little detail even after a hundred years of science-ing. So this is our little secret, capiche?”
Astor nodded again. If what Asivus was saying was true (And it was) then Hyrule were truly doomed. The Calamity would exploit this secret, and use it to flip the entire war on its head. This is what Ganon would use to turn the Divine Beasts against them.
If any of the researchers found out about this aspect of Ancient Technology, and adapted to it, then Ganon would lose his biggest advantage...and it might be possible to...
The seer quickly shook away the thought. No, even if they knew, the world would be helpless all the same when the Princess fails to awaken their powers. In fact, it would probably be more brutal if Ganon’s forces were reliant completely on the bludgeoning and stabbing that came with monsters. Machines would have avoidable patterns in a post-apocalyptic world, but monsters of malice would be exceptionally harder.
So yes...We keep this info from everyone. Especially Robbie and Purah and...
“How sure are you that no one else could figure this out?” Astor asked.
“Decently sure. I mean, it’d be pretty hard to guess such a crazy thing.” Asivus shrugged.
“Are you positive? Because I know my—” He stopped in his tracks, suddenly stumbling on his words. “I—in reference to random researchers—other non-specified—she’s not—Look. There are very talented and intelligent researchers across the kingdom, surely someone—”
“Did you say it yourself? Everyone’s way to arrogant around here!” Siv threw his hands in the air, exasperated. “No one’s gonna look for faults in their perfect little war machines! They shoot lasers, and don’t talk back. It’s a general’s wet dream. Even if someone figured out this secret, no one here would listen to them.” He waved his hand in a circle and gestured towards his half brother. “Case in point: You.”
Astor folded his arms and sighed. “Alright, fine. So that’s how the Calamity will turn the Guardians and Beasts against us. But what’s the actual execution of it all? The plan? What’s your play in this? How did the Guardians in the yard get corrupted?”
Siv was silent; thinking. He seemed to be endlessly swimming through thoughts and words and memories. The man fiddled with the discs surrounding the astrolabe, eyes drooping in misery. Interesting.
“I was supposed to make them. That’s what he wanted,” Asivus finally said. “Beast of water, lightning, air, and fire. Or, demons? Blights or something. Creatures that were to take on the Divine Beasts.They’re built slightly different than Guardians, so he needed a little something special to deal with ‘em.” He blew hair off his forehead with a huff. “It all sorta just came into my head in the minutes before I fucked up those Guardians, so the details come and go, but that’s the gist. I make the Blights, Ganon does his thing, then I wait at the Sanctum to achieve true happiness or whatever he was bullshitting.”
“But you failed.” Astor interjected. “You failed to make the blights, and thus today’s calamity failed. At least, in this timeline.” Siv opened his mouth to object, but he continued to think outloud. “The Guardians were a fluke, then. You were not capable of creating Blights, but wielded enough malice to corrupt a Guardian. Although that brings into question how you control malice to begin with...and why you were chosen specifically for the task...”
Asivus was silent again, spinning the astrolabe on the floor. Astor observed him for a moment.
“Is he speaking to you? At the moment?” The seer asked. “Every time you fall silent is when you start looking down at that device. That thing I can correctly assume is the instigator of all this, given that you look at it every time I ask about the recent Guardians you ruined.”
Asivus narrowed his eyes at him, annoyed at being so readable.
“Ganon isn’t in your head, as you said you were overcome with this information in the minutes you truly held that astrolabe and walked by the Guardians.” He thought back. “Earlier before the incident you said you had a dream, and then you found the astrolabe? You leave it on your desk as a paper weight, before developing the decent moral to drop off a potential lost item to the Sheikah. But then you were holding the astrolabe in proximity to the Guardians, and subsequently are suddenly given the revelation to the Calamity’s plan...”
He locked eyes with him. “Combine that with the truth about all Sheikah Technology itself...and the fact that your eyes only change when that core is in your possession...”
Astor walked closer and gripped one of the bars, calmly. “That astrolabe is the link between you and the Calamity. It speaking to you through it. It’s lending you the power to control malice. It’s a manifested vessel of Ganon’s ill intent for this world...perhaps made of whatever malice plagues yourself. Perhaps he chose you for the job because you’re brimming with his favourite substance.”
Assivus started at the seer, and blinked once. Astor took that as confirmation, but asked anyways: “Am I wrong?”
Siv bit his tongue for a moment, before sighing in defeat. “You’ve got Ligero’s mannerisms down to the T. The perceptiveness nearly makes me wish I had actually paid attention to his parenting attempts.”
Something twisted inside Astor at that comment, and his voice grew a dangerous edge. “I’m nothing like him.”
“It’s alright, don’t take it personally. I just have a love-hate relationship with smart people.”
“Tsk.” The prophet stared down the corridor in thought. “Don’t we all.”
“But you’re wrong about one thing.” Siv added, and he looked up at Astor with a new seriousness. “I didn’t ‘fail’ to make the blights.”
He raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, I didn’t fail to make the blights, I didn’t want to.” Asivus raised his voice, and rolled the astrolabe to the other side of the cell. “You can’t fail something you never really attempted in the first place.” He winked. “I mean, that’s been my philosophy on life for the last 15 years, heh.”
Astor blinked in surprise. “But...why? The world is doomed, and you were handed a position of life and power on a silver tray. Chosen above anyone else.  Why wouldn’t—?”
“I didn’t do it because I’m not like you, pissface!” Siv snapped. “I jump outta my socks to make a selfish decision. I don’t just run away from any inconvenience in my life.”
Astor nearly laughed. “Oh? And what exactly is it that you do, then? You’re really going to preach to me, Mr. Assivus Asunder?”
“YEAH! That name is exactly why I decided this!” He waved his arms in the air, and gestured to himself as he slumped against the wall. “Taking action and fighting for anything, regardless of what, sucks ass. Initiating change? Bad. Acting on what you care about? No likey.” Siv pounded his chest proudly. “The ideal ending for Asivus Ex-Hartell is to just chill out, and wait for the end. Drink in hand!”
He raised his empty flask, but nonetheless pretended to drink.
Astor frowned, but let the distant drip of leaking water echo in the corridor.
He watched Siv for a few more minutes, silently tapping his fingers on his elbow.
“You still care about your brother.”
It was a good think his flask was empty, as otherwise he would have spit out his drink. Siv angrily sputtered. “The fuck does that have to do with anything—?!”
“Why are you just relaxing in there after all this time?  You think you deserve this? Don’t want to be a burden for others?” Astor looked him up and down.
“Listen, you little shit. I know at this point it shouldn’t be a surprise that my family is made up of asshole, but—”
“You know when I first saw you around the castle, I did recognize you. The eyes, you see. But of course, I didn’t see the need to trouble you with my story, but I did watch you.” The prophet sneered. “Dear Asivus Hartell, sneaking into town to share a peach cobbler with his niece. Assivus Asunder, teaching his nephew to shield surf, and trying to encourage him down a more righteous path than his own. The Royal Orator Siv, who thanks his little brother for taking care of him by spending four hours making perfect hand drawn rat doodle cards.” Astor leaned down with a smirk. “You’re not the only one who paid attention to the captain’s birthday presents.”
“Alright get to the point, fuckface.” He waved the prophet off. “What? I screw around with my dumb family. What’s it gotta do with anything?”
“It means that for all your talk of laying down and dying and giving up, your action seems to indicate that you don’t actually believe that.” He jabbed a finger at Siv through the bars. “Or at least you don’t fully. Maybe you don’t want to. So don’t go blathering about your sorry life, only to try and insult me in the next minute. This isn’t about your apathy. You’re just scrambling at this low bar Ganon gives you as you drool the rare opportunity to unequivocally be an undeniably good person. You just want to tell yourself you’re a hero.”
Quiet.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
“OK.” Asivus curled his lip. “I didn’t want to join Ganon, because I’m still stupidly trying to not be an asshole. I’m too much of a wuss to commit to the dickhead role I was probably meant to fulfill. I’m pathetically trying to keep control over my image—is THAT what you want to hear, magic man? Congratu-fucking-lations. You turned the tables, you can see how pathetic I am and can feel better about yourself. How do ya feel?” The astrolabe had rolled by Asivus’ lap, and gold speckled in his eyes.
Astor sighed and answered honestly. “...Well. I’m envious, truth be told.” Siv blinked, but let him continue. “I haven’t bothered trying to be a hero my whole life, much less have such a driven (and these days useless) hunger to be ‘good.’” The seer shook his head, staring down the hall again. “I’m envious, but I do think you’re a fool. I’d take the opportunity to wield the future in a heartbeat, no matter the consequences.”
“You don’t know what you’re saying.” Siv chuckled. “This malice stuff is fucked up.”
“Only because you don’t understand it.” Astor replied, offended. “I’ve studies it for years, and it’s often misunderstood. There’s a beauty and usefulness to it, even detached from the Calamity. You’re just not intelligent enough to get it, I understand. ‘Love-hate relationship,’ like you said.” He snorted.
“Are you sick?! This Ancient Core thing made me walk through so many shitty memories and thoughts...I wouldn’t walk through that again to end OR save the world.”
“Again. All due to your plight of ignorance. It’s not your fault.”
Asivus rolled his eyes. “You know what? Why don’t you explain it me then?! If you’re so excited about it? Talk aaall about how I’m not fit to properly wield this and how pathetic I am?”
Siv dangled the astrolabe in the air between his fingers.
“Go on! Explain how great this malice is, and maybe then if you’re so eager I’ll just leave the thing in your care!”
The First Temple!!!
           !!!!!
           The twist! At the end! I, I, WHAAAATTTTT!?!?!?!?
           The computer-tech vibes are REALLY Breath of the Wild now, and that giant heart… orb… THING with the multiple eyes??? I’m getting Calamity Ganon vibes now! God, could the eyes connect it to those shadow creatures?! What if the Calamity Box stopped being used because all of its interdimensional travelling created an opening for some horrific monster from another world to break through- And it hasn’t been able to YET or something, but it can contact Andrias??? What if it needs to be broken free, is that an alien?!?! And the giant weird spire thing on top of the castle, is the castle built around an alien space ship?!!? Damn, Andrias and Belos do be having their parallels, introduced at the same time as the rulers of their isekai worlds, main villains, and also serving some sort of giant thing in a dark room!
           It’s safe to say that Andrias is a villain now. Regarding his motives, I don’t know- But it’s great to FINALLY see Yunnan back, and to see him interact with her, to get a reminder that YES, this dude is the one who employed Yunnan and was against the rebellions from the start! Also, good on Grime and Sasha for getting the Toad Lords on their side, TOAD REBELLION! With how Yunnan is cut off, does Andrias even know about Sasha being with Grime? THAT would be a twist…
           But, onto the heart of the episode! I’m really glad we get to see Anne and Hop Pop address the emotional fallout of what happened more, and I feel for Sprig and Polly. I love the frustration and passive-aggression, and Hop Pop being really desperate and sad… Dang, this episode was kind of mean to him in some respects for the lie! I feel for Anne, wondering if she’s really a part of the family, and I love how the show acknowledges that sometimes people can feel like they’ve forgiven too soon and change their mind on that! The jokes in this episode were great and I love the twist with the outhouse… But yeah, that resolution with Hop Pop and Anne, how he thinks she’s enjoying this and she makes it a point that she’s not, the argument about what’s best for the family… SO GOOD!
           And that ending! With how Anne admits that no, there is no big, grand gesture that Hop Pop can perform to automatically make it better… She just needs TIME, and as frustrating as that is for people who want it over ASAP, that’s all you can do! Give time, and Hop Pop, after getting to say his word, acknowledges Anne’s needs and stops trying to push her to make a decision ASAP. I love this episode so much you guys, I remember a lot of people expressing concern over the emotional fallout bit from After the Rain feeling rushed and not given enough time- But it seems it will be, just across multiple episodes! I like that, it feels nice and well-paced and everything, feels ever-present and with REAL impact that pays off for the season-long build up!
           Marcy! Those flashbacks were great, and her stimming and hyper-focusing, she is NOT neurotypical y’all! I love that the show is getting more into her fatal flaw, specifically not always regarding others, taking them for granted, etc. I like that the Temple of Wit (that’s what I’m calling it) tests not just intelligence, but WISDOM as well… The latter is needed for Marcy! Also, I believe the chess game Andrias is playing is called Flip-Wart, so we’d better refer to it as such from now on… But back to my main point, I have to wonder if this is indicating that Marcy isn’t quite toxic anymore? Like she WAS… But since then, she’s gone through her character development, so while Sprig WAS Anne’s first non-toxic friendship, it’s not like we’ll have to worry about Marcy suddenly acting evil!
           …But then again, who knows what else is hidden? I have to wonder and speculate. I like that this episode has Marcy acknowledging the Plantars more and caring for them too, and not just as extensions of Anne, with her realizing how Hop Pop’s pain isn’t worth the victory! Also, that little lore bit with the Calamity Box was great… And Marcy! Did MARCY get drained of her Wit power, because her eyes turn green and then the green drains… Is she going to become less smart or something? Or is this just some latent power that she stores, but it won’t affect her? Imagine Marcy angsting over losing intelligence or something, maybe it’s all just a placebo…
           Imagine if we get a conflict where Sasha realizes the power she holds inside of her, and she doesn’t want to lose it to go back home! THAT would be quite the dilemma… Combined with Marcy perhaps wanting to live a fantasy, who knows? There was SO much to this episode, I had a good feeling given it was a full twenty minutes… But that ending twist, DANG I did not expect it! And we still have an entire season AFTER the rest of this one! Here’s looking to the next, F-Anne’s!
Triforce Flip AU: I’ve been sitting on this AU for a while and am finally happy enough with where I am to post about it!
The flip is between Zelda and Ganondorf, so Zelda wields Power, and Ganon wields Wisdom. Link still has Courage.
If you wanna read more about the specifics about it, there’s some basic info under the cut!
TL;DR: Ganondorf is the wielder of Wisdom, the future Chief of the Gerudo, and is currently heading towards the Lost Woods. Zelda is the wielder of Power and leads the Sheikah Resistance Forces against her corrupt father. Their soldiers believe Zelda to have the Triforce of Wisdom and Impa to have Courage. Link is a town guard and the true weilder of Courage. They only person who knows this is Sheik, who he has not seen since his reveal. Link is heading towards the Lost Woods. Zelda’s whereabouts are unknown. Everyone is trans.
Ganondorf (he/him): Ganondorf is a little closed off and overdramatic, but his tactical skills make him indispensable when it comes to expeditions out into the desert. He is the first voe born in a thousand years, but he is the only self-made gerudo voe in recorded history. This greatly confused the rest of the town, but they vowed to support one of their own and helped him transition through a combination of magic and medicine. His mother, the town jeweler, is especially proud of him and crafted his headpiece in the style of Gerudo voe of the past. Even though he has the right to rule as a voe, the Chief, his aunt, is convinced that his transition is a plot for his mother to become chief. As such, he was not crowned chief. This doesn’t phase Ganon too much, though, and he continues to work to better his community any way he can without the official role of chief. Overtime, the town comes around and the people of the village see him as the rightful ruler and follow him into battle without complaint. He is kind and devoted to them all, seeing no soldier better than him, and his calculating nature leads to effective expeditions with little loss of life.
Throughout Hyrule, the frequency of monster attacks had been increasing, coming to a climax in Gerudo valley one cold night. That night, in order to protect his mother and aunt, Ganon unlocked his sealing powers. Any doubt surrounding his right to rule was squashed when it’s revealed he has Hylia’s Wisdom. Both out of thanks and newfound trust, the Chief offered Ganondorf the thrown. He thanked her, but turned down the offer for the time being, claiming he felt a call north to the Lost Woods and felt he would find a way to bring peace to the land there.
Zelda (she/they): Zelda’s father, the King, has been on the defense for years, fighting the increasingly frequent monster attacks throughout his kingdom. The King becomes more agitated as time goes on, the pressure getting to him. This soon came to a climax when his family is attacked while he is out in the field. Zelda’s mother and only brother were both killed in the attack. The King blames the Sheikah for what he sees as their failure and betrayal to the royal family, since they were the only ones who knew of the castle’s weakened state. In truth, it is an unfortunate set of circumstances, but that does not stop the king from betraying the Sheikah and running them out of the castle.
Zelda had been on rocky terms with their father for years. He blamed Zelda for not unlocking her sealing powers, seeing them as the ultimate solution for the monster attacks. When Zelda hears about the rampage her father is causing within the castle, they convince Impa, their personal aid and a mother figure, to stay behind and try to talk to Zelda’s father. When they do all meet up, it’s no use. The King is passed convincing, and he sees Zelda as another traitor to the crown, ordering his guards to attack. Fearing what would happen to them, Zelda closes their wishes to be able to escape with Impa unscathed. When she opens her eyes, the guards and the King are all frozen solid, and the two are able to make their escape. To their horror, Zelda has unlocked magic powers associated with the Triforce of Power.
After the escape, Impa and Zelda meet up with the escaped Sheikah and defected Hylian soldiers. They created the Sheikah Resistance Forces, which aim to overthrow the corrupt King and put Zelda on the thrown. Zelda grows up to be cold and isolated, rarely smiling, but still showing kindness to those around her. The soldiers are convinced that Zelda has finally unlocked the powers of Wisdom, and Zelda is too scared to correct them. Still, Zelda is convinced that the Resistance needs two pieces of the Triforce to successfully overthrow her father. Impa eventually reveals to Zelda that she has Courage, despite never using any of its ability. Still, Impa has no reason to lie, so when Zelda is old enough to lead, they come out of hiding and start their attack.
Zelda will meet Link (see Link section) while presenting as Sheik, and is feircely protective of him. Demise, taking physical form, will try and convince Zelda to give in to their “true power,” claiming that with it, no one else would have to die and Link could have the quiet life he wants. Zelda is not convinced to give in until [REDACTED].
Link (he/him): When Link was young, his village was attacked by the King’s forces, looking to find any Resistance forces. In the attack, his parents are killed, and Link escaped into the forest with his baby sister in his arms. Even though they escaped the King’s forces, Link runs straight into a Lizalfos camp. He stood his ground as long as he could, but he was no match against all of them. His final wish is to find the strength to protect his sister, and he unlocks Courage. With his wish, he is able to beat the monsters and escape to his grandparent’s village, where he has lived since. Link tells no one of the emergence of his powers, afraid he’d be pulled into the war. Another thing he tells no one is the blessing of the local Great Fairy he received, allowing him to magically transition.
Link loves the people of his new village, but is devastated by the guilt of unlocking his powers too late to save his parents. Determined to never allow this to happen again, Link guards the entrance to the village every night. His sister worries for him, but can do nothing to convince him to leave his post. Link sleeps very little, resting when behind the counter at his grandparents’ store or when behind his pottery wheel (yes, he’s a potter). The nights get easier when a stranger by the name of Sheik (he/they) starts appearing besides him. They often bring his harp, playing for Link. The two become very close, and Link trusts Sheik enough to be able to sleep at night as Sheik guards the village. One night, the two are ambushed and Link is forced to use his powers to save Sheik. Sheik is amazed, confused, and fearful for Link, making him promise to never reveal his powers to anyone. When Link agrees, Sheik gifts Link Din’s Protection, then leaves. They have not seen each other since.
Link has been more on edge since the attack, and more people are on guard at night. One night, Hylia reaches out to him, calling him to go to the Lost Woods, where he will meet another part of his soul.
If you’ve got any questions, feel free to shoot them my way! I’d love to talk about them!
Note
I'm not sure if this question has been asked before, but what would be usually the reason why people would torture someone? Not to justify (torture is unjustifiable in any situation) but I really needed a driving force for a villain why they would w/o sounding ridiculous or implausible, and any reason I come up with falls kind of flat (... Which I suppose is expected, since that's how the reasonings behind tortures are in rl I guess)
I can help you out here. And I want you to know that from a writing stand point this does make perfect sense. Motivation, however shallow, is important for capturing a character.
 Yes a lot of the motivations in reality are flat, shallow and outright stupid. And it can be a careful balancing act, showing those motivations making them understandable without straying into justifying them. It can also be hard to make an interesting character with flat motivations.
 I think I’ll start off with talking about motivations/‘reasons’ in reality and then talk a little about when and whether we should break from reality when we write about torturers.
 Remember that there isn’t a lot of research on torturers. So I’m working from the little bit of research I can access, interviews with torturers and anecdotal reports. It isn’t perfect, but this is (so far as I can tell) the best information we have at the time of writing.
 Understanding why torture occurs means understanding that it is structural violence.
 I do take questions on abuse, I personally don’t see much point in sticking to the strict legal definition of torture when I’m trying to help authors do a decent job portraying trauma survivors. But sometimes the definition matters. And torture is essentially defined as abuse by government employees*, by public servants in positions of authority.
 Over and over again the reasons torturers give for their crimes come back to flaws in the organisations they were part of. Consistently, across cultures and time periods, they describe understaffed, high pressure environments with no training, little supervision and the instruction to produce results or else.
 This combines with cultural messages that violence ‘works’ and existing sub-cultures of torturers within organisations to perpetuate abuse.
 It’s also worth mentioning that for most torturers they’re coming into an organisation where there are already established sub-groups of torturers. The group dynamics do seem to play a role in all this. Though it’s difficult to say how much when we’re entirely going from what torturers say and they are… demonstrably inaccurate when it comes to talking about torture.
 Having said that; torturers do seem to encourage each other to more and more acts of violence. They treat it almost competitively. They will also, sometimes, approach new recruits and bring them into the torturer sub-group, pressuring them to participate.
 I’m unsure how much of a role the social factor plays in torturers starting to torture, but it definite seems to keep them torturing when they say they’d rather stop. There are a couple of reasons why.
 First of all there’s a sort of implicit threat; refusing to torture is seen as a threat to the torturer sub-culture. And these are people who have already shown a capacity for violence. There have been cases of torturers attacking other members of the same organisation for their opposition to, or refusal to, torture.
 There’s also a social aspect; once involved with the torturer sub-culture the individual tends to become more and more cut off from the rest of the organisation. The group of torturers becomes more or less their entire social circle.
 We’re social animals. So leaving, rejecting the entire social group, is a big deal. It’s hard for us to do.
 The toxic sub-culture torturers form encourages them to root part of their identity in their capacity for violence and how ‘good at it’ the other members of their group think they are. They tend to tie ideas of toughness, dependability, achievement and (often) masculinity to torture. They frame themselves as especially manly, strong and ‘willing to do the tough jobs no one else has the guts to’.
 It’s complete nonsense but it’s what they do.
 And it means that facing up to the fact torture is pointless feels like an attack on their self worth. A lot of them choose to double down rather then face that reality.
 This isn’t a definitive list of relevant factors. It’s my assessment of the ones that always seem to show up. There are usually other factors that feed into particular situations. Rejali’s Three Systems is a worth a read on that front.
 Ideas about social hierarchy and transgression are common features. So things like ‘anyone who does That Terrible Thing deserves to be tortured’ or ‘no one Like That would be in this part of town for an innocent reason’.
 All of this means that motivation can be tricky to write, because the real motivations are often not the sort of thing we’re taught are ‘interesting’.
 Real, honest motivations are often things like:
‘I think those people deserve it’
‘I was told to’
‘Everyone else was doing it’
‘I couldn’t think of anything else to do’
‘I got angry and took it out on someone else’
‘I thought it would work and no one ever taught me another way’
 That’s not a definitive list but you get the idea. And probably get the point about these sorts of shallow motivations being narratively unsatisfying.
 So let’s step back from the reality and tackle the writing problem at the heart of this: how do we make this interesting?
 There are a couple of different approaches.
 The first approach I see is to accept that the motivation and the villain are shallow and shift the interest away from the villain.
 Villains don’t need to be interesting. And they don’t need to be the focus.
 If your story is structured in a way which primarily makes the villain a looming threat and focuses on the heroes, their journey, their relationships then adding detail or depth to the villain is unnecessary.
 The Lord of the Rings trilogy does this with several of its major villains. The Shape of Water does it for the main villain. Zelda: Breath of the Wild (yes I bought a switch during lock down, and it’s my first Zelda game I am not sorry) does it with Ganon.
 Another approach is to accept the motivation is shallow and shift the focus away from the villain’s motivation.
 Villains do not need to have a grand philosophy or deep motivation or underlying pain in order to be a good read. They don’t need to be an intellectual threat to the heroes in order to be a legitimate threat.
 For instance Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, I’d argue one of the best takes on the character ever. But if you go back and watch the episodes he isn’t deep. His motivation almost always boils down to pettiness, greed and a vindictive streak a mile wide. It is incredibly shallow.
 But he’s fun to watch, because he’s unpredictable and funny. He’s also a legitimate threat to the heroes because he’s so incredibly destructive. More then any other villain his crimes are aimed at effecting large numbers of people. That sets the stakes high without any motivation or philosophy coming into it.
 The focus is on what he does each time he shows up, not why.
 Persona 5 pulls off a similar trick. Every single one of its villains has a shallow motivation. But each of them also has power over one of the heroes or another innocent person. They don’t need a deeper or more interesting motivation in order to make life miserable for the heroes. And every caper hinges on the heroes trying to stop that worst outcome.
 As much as Fullmetal Alchemist is a deep story which touches on many complex topics, neither version (the original manga or the 2003 anime with it’s very different plot) had a particularly complex villain at the end of the story. In both cases the ultimate leader of the ‘bad guys’ just wanted more power. And didn’t care how many lives they destroyed to get it.
 Not all stories need a Killmonger.
 It’s always worth taking the time to consider what your story needs, rather then what’s fashionable in fiction at the moment. On a personal note some of my favourite stories have been either entirely focused on the heroes or had explicitly shallow villains.
 The reality is that most of the time motivations for large scale atrocities are shallow and unsatisfying. Giving fictional villains deeper or more complex motives can work, but it can also mean twisting the narrative up to make it look like the villain (and hence their actions) are more reasonable then they are.
 Killmonger’s twisted vision of what would make Wakanda ‘better’ works in Black Panther, just as White Wolf’s similar motivation did in the comics a decade or so earlier. They work because they’re directly competing with the hero’s vision of what would make the world better. And because ultimately it’s about showing why T’Challa’s way is better then the villain he’s facing off against.
 But I can think of other stories where giving the villain a ‘deeper’ reasoning just served to make them look reasonable. While they were arguing for torture and genocide.
 And… I just think we’ve got enough of that in real life.
 At the end of the day your villain should be serving a role within the story you’re creating. Motivation is one of many ways that we try to make sure they serve that function effectively and entertainingly.
 But, despite what some people would have you believe, it ain’t the be all and end all of whether a villain or story is entertaining. Personality, plots, aesthetic and sometimes how satisfying it feels to see their day ruined, all feed in to how well a villain works.
 The threat they represent in the story isn’t dependant on whether their motivation is deep or nuanced or rational. It’s about their ability to follow through and sometimes the horrific nature of the desire itself.
 So I guess a lot of my advice here is to consider what your villain actually needs to do in the story. Then take a step back and consider whether deeper motivation adds anything to that.
 Be aware that the more complex motivations and drives you add the further you’re getting from a realistic torturer. Which is not inherently apologia, or inherently a bad writing idea, but consider what any deviation from reality implies.
 I hope that helps. :)
