i love arjuna and bebop but i strongly believe that the soundtrack for wolf's rain is Yoko Kanno's best work. rakuen/paradiso is really just one of the most gorgeous compositions i've ever heard in my life. gravity, too.
It's still so surreal to me that no one ever brings up The Vision of Escaflowne. I watched it as a kid and like, man, I'm not even a huge fan of it or anything and I never actually finished it (although I did see the movie at some point), but like????
Early example of fantasy isekai
Has a tsundere cat girl
Has mech fights
I remember hearing somewhere that this was the last anime produced by Studio Sunrise to be fully hand drawn before their switch to digital. I can't find a source anymore and I don't think that's actually true but nonetheless it has some really gorgeous animation
Yoko Kanno worked on the soundtrack and the main theme has Gregorian chant style
Opening theme is sung by Maaya Sakamoto and includes a bagpipes solo
Shounen anime with a female protagonist
In the current anime zeitgeist (90s anime are all the rage, isekai are everywhere, people keep joking about catgirls) it's absolutely bizarre to me that I seem to be the only person on the fucking planet who remembers Escaflowne. Hello?? Hello????? Were you guys not all watching this fucking video repeatedly in the 2000s where am I
This is our cover of Yakusoku Wa Iranai (Promises Not Needed), composed by the legendary Yoko Kanno and originally sung by the talented Maaya Sakamoto, from the anime The Vision of Escaflowne. Happy 28th birthday, Escaflowne! (April 2, 1996)
Eva did the vocals, while Wally did the guitar and keys.

Summary:
The original work is a gag manga serialized in Shueisha's ``Weekly Shonen Jump'' from 1990 to 1992. The third original video animation produced as part of the 20th anniversary project of author Man☆Gataro's debut as a manga artist, ``It's 20 years since I fell asleep! It's Man☆Gataro Festival, Bakayaro!!''.
The time is Mansei 2nd year. Genjo, a monk who was continuing his journey towards Tenjiku, is asked by chance to rehabilitate his delinquent son. However, that son is a monster who is causing trouble in the capital! Although Genjo has a hard time against Yamada Taro, a monster with strong magical powers, he succeeds in absorbing Taro's magical energy with his jewel and making him accompany Taro on his journey to Tenjiku, where he has become a monkey. During their journey, the two arrive at a certain town, but Taro, who was walking naked, is picked up by the town's evil gang, the Takeshi Corps. Taro steals Genjo's attention and tries to get revenge on the evil brat, but...?
No one send asks anymore, so here I am: what are your top 5 Escaflowne songs?
AND THEY SHOULD! Admin's top 5 Esca songs:
Gloria (OST I) - I just love me a song that gets your imagination running. This track has whole chapters and I always love that about a song! Various parts of it were used in several memorable scenes all over the series.
A Far Cry (OST I) - this one would I guess be less popular choice but it's a beautiful piece by Hajime Mizoguchi... the OST is mostly associated with Kanno but Escaflowne wouldn't be the same without his string pieces. It was a battle between this and Shadow of Doubt, another favorite of his. Shadow of Doubt is a great character piece, but this track I think really creates an atmosphere of a far away world that is filled with beauty... and sadness.
First Vision (Movie) - I don't think I need to explain this one, again, it's a story in a song form that sets the tone and sound for the whole movie. And the latter part is as much of a banger as an orchestral piece can be. Brava, Yoko!
Kaze ga Fuku Hi (Lovers Only)- well, I wanted to include one of Maaya Sakamoto's insert songs and I chose this one because it really grew on me a lot, music and lyrics. Teenage me would choose Hikari No Naka E instead though, it used to make me cry just hearing the first notes. It's such a 90s power ballad.
Flying Dragon (OST I) - for how short it is, it's pretty epic! It's a hard battle between this, Wings, and Angel, but I guess it's something that perfectly fits the anime. This track just makes you want to fly the dragon mode Escaflowne haha.
Since tagging is another thing that doesn't get done much anymore, I'm tagging the latest followers of this blog: @adragonstreasuretrove @mebemae @hehespider @acatkat @alberto-balsalm @undedkat @riafunnel @hellogreyeyedathena @sky-of-strobes @goodheartmischeivousmind ... and anyone who would like to do it!
Same question: List your top 5 Escaflowne songs!
You can make your own post or reblog with this one if you like.
Yomi no Tsugai is almost three years old, so it's time to at least dream of an anime adaptation. So, I tried to think of who I hear when I read the manga, and came up with this list. I tried to provide video examples, but, sadly, not every seiyuu has a "{name} roles compilation" video. Also, some videos are hyperlinked because of tumblr's 10-videos-per-post limit.
Under the cut is the part of the main cast I could come up with voices for. Warning: the fact that I have only seen like three anime (is it comical exaggeration? who knows) is even more glaringly obvious here.
aaaand i'll have to repeat because this is the piss on the poor website: there's no news about the anime yet! no one is talking about it officially at the moment! it's my dream cast! who i personally imagine when i read! you absolutely can and should disagree with me and maybe share who you would like to hear as who!
Yuru
IMHO, he should be voiced by male seiyuu. For example, Takeo Ootsuka (the closest to what I imagine is Oshi no Ko's Aqua).
youtube
Asa (real)
Her seiyuu should be able to switch between two modes: the "cold and ruthless" mode and the "sweet teenage girl" mode, and her voice should be relatively deep. I can hear someone like Mizuki Nana (FMAB's Lan Fan, Uramichi Oniisan's Utano Tadano). I mean, Lan Fan has both of these sides.
youtube
Asa (fake)
She is a sweet girl like 100% of the time, and Saori Hayami's voice (Spy x Family's Yor, Majo to Yajuu's Phanora) would fit her perfectly.
youtube
Danji (and Ken)
I hear each of these guys' lines in either Megumi Ogata's voice (Shinji from NGE, Hanako from Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun), or Maaya Sakamoto's (Ciel from Black Butler, Haruhi from OHSHC). I'd say, Danji's voice in my head is closer to Shinji's.

Gab
Her voice should be high-pitched. Rie Kugumiya (do I even need to) maybe? Definitely not her Al voice, but closer to her Kagura Gintama five years later voice. steal one of the brothers' look, steal the other's voice :D
youtube
Left
She probably should have the deepest voice compared to the rest of the female cast. I'd probably choose someone like Romi Paku (but not her Ed Elric voice; her Kill la Kill's Ragyou Kiryuuin or Black Butler's Madam Red voice. Or something in between; god, this woman's vocal range...).
youtube
I also thought about Shouko Tsuda (Izumi from FMA and FMAB; Martha from Spy x Family), but couldn't find a video.
Right
Someone like Rikiya Koyama (Lum's father from Urusei Yatsura 2022, Neptune Shoukaku from Gintama (beware of spoilers in this example). He should sound like one of these two characters, not like, for example, Fukuzawa BSD <- unbelievable that these three have the same seiyuu).
Dera
Sugita Tomokazu. Is it because he voiced Gintoki, another morally dubious badass fighter guy who sees a kid, asks "who's gonna adopt them" and doesn't wait for an answer, and then goes to spend all of his money on gambling? Maybe. Oh, he's also voiced Kyon from Haruhi Suzumiya and Joseph Joestar. (god, his voice is too recognizable)
youtube
Hana
Satsuki Yukino (FMAB!Rosé, Tae from Gintama, Kagome from InuYasha). Yes, it's because of Tae. Both Tae and Hana are 1) pretty (and) dangerous, and 2) the best girls of their respective manga. Also, her voice just fits.
Another option would be Marina Inoue (TTGL's Yoko Littner, Gintama's Ikeda Asaemon, SZS's Kitsu Chiri <- another best girl, what an unbelievable coincidence)
youtube
Jin
His voice should be deep, that's what I'm certain of. He also should sound like he's permanently very, very, very tired of everything. I think of someone like Hosoya Yoshimasa (Kunikida BSD, Reiner AOT). The videoo with examples does not provide any example of tiredness, but does provide an example of a deep voice.
