The most important thing to remember when solving the dart puzzle is that even if it takes everything to solve it, it can never take the joy and whimsy you hold so tenderly in your heart.

Genuinely I think we as a society need to figure out why 90% of the population is unbelievably bad at math and hates it like why have we demonized truly one of the most important subjects in school
#obligatory “i don't hate people with discalcula and that's also not what I'm talking about”#and i am genuinely a bit upset about this because i truly don’t get it. like math is hard but not THAT much harder than english#or learning a language#and you can't ALL have had super shitty math teachers#so why are so many people incapable of doing like basic algebra#“oh math isn't applicable to real life” yeah man i bet you're forced to read various classics and talk about them later all the time huh#maybe not everything you learn in school DIRECTLY translates to real life hm? maybe you're developing your brain to be able to think?#and don't get me started on “gays can't do math” hey worstie why are you correlating being queer with anti intellectualism#math#education

Reviewing polar coordinates in a textbook with a student and this is a poem. to me
#really been a journey in the last few years to come back around to loving math#I got really downtrodden about it in high school. I was 2 years ahead and absolutely convinced I did not understand a thing#untrue! I simply didn't know how to cope with the occasional frustration and didn't know how to study effectively to UNDERSTAND vs. learn#my brain and self have now baked sufficiently and I can now say math is fun#and it's just this: Do you see the pattern?

another thing i constantly expect to be more helpful than at this point i have reason to believe it will ever be is telling kids to think about quarters when they multiply by 25. again to me this is a very intuitive leap and if you ask most kids older than like first grade (and even some first graders who've done a money unit) how much is like 7 quarters they can tell you. but they simply will not connect that to 7 x 25. they just won't.
#years ago i read a thing about someone in some like latin american village (sorry for the blur of memory)#discovering that kids were doing lots of complicated calculations while helping their parents with their jobs#and framed this as like an indictment of math pedagogy that they couldn't do the same kind of thing in school#and used it to argue that it's important to make math connect to the real world#but like... the process of mathematical development across millennia around the world... has been the development of abstraction#and getting comfortable with math is a lot about learning to go back and forth between the concrete and the abstract#which is HARD for most people i think. and it's good to be aware of that and think about how to support that#but if you take the abstract non-real-world aspect out of math it is simply no longer 'math' i think

I swear I’m not a mean mom, my kid really and truly asked me for a multiplication math workbook for Christmas because he’s bored doing adding and subtracting with his class. I got him cool gifts, too, I swear.

#like he already knows his 12 times so I don’t really know how much he’ll get from this#but I wasn’t ready to by my first grader a fucking algebra workbook#although he DID solve for x the other day#his dad and I just 😳#like bro….you’re the youngest kid in your grade…..#why you doing math that the oldest kids in your SCHOOL aren’t even doing???#I love him so much#you wanna learn math baby? here’s your handmade 12x table for your room. here’s a math workbook. let’s recite equations in the car together#he’s going to surpass my math knowledge by the time he’s 9#and not because I’m stupid or bad at math but just because he’s got this insane mind for numbers#sometimes he’ll work through problems out loud and it is fucking FASCINATING listening to his thought process#kids are so cool#asks them to talk their way through something#it’s a fascinating insight into how they see the world and will tell you so much about them#personal#bilbobawks#parenting#kids#math

hey guys so I just started reading Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott and OMG AHSBNSBSBSNSNBSHZHSHDBFHGGHFHGRJ2KSHSBSNSK AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I LOVE THINKING ABOUT THE RELATIVITY BETWEEN DIMENSIONS!!!!!!
#probably the nerdiest thing i will ever read in my entire life but I AM SO HAPPY#Its the unabridged and corrected 1992 republication btw. if you wanna get specific#the only book in which i have actually decided to read the introductory notes and i do NOT regret it because the editor's one IMMEDIATELY#brought up the “oh but surely the second dimension has thickness how else would flatlanders see anything” AND GAVE A REALLY GOOD ANSWER.#which i cannot tell you here. bc it is several paragraphs long and idk how i would shorten it. i would hit tag limit. if thats a thing.#anyways. I'm only a little bit into the first part which basically explains how Flatland works as a society so i haven't even gotten to the#sphere yet but OH MAN I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO EXCITED ABOUT A ROUND OBJECT IN MY LIFE#IM LOSING IT OVER THIS BOOK AAAA :D#me: im so glad i dont have a math class during my senior year! now i dont have to learn anything math-related!#also me: but what if i started studying a complex and almost entirely theoretical part of geometry#bc YEAH i didn't just buy this book bc of gravity falls. I BOUGHT IT BC IVE BEEN RESEARCHING THE 4TH DIMENSION WOOOOOOO!!!!!#one thing i will say i dont like. introductory note suggests the the 4th dimension might be time. this is ok tho bc its followed up with#also saying that time is not a spatial dimension and exist across the 0 1st 2nd and 3rd dimensions which. that epuld mean we live in 4d#already. so. i was worried for a second but THANK YOU THANK YOU OH MY GOD PEOPLE TRYING TO SAY “OH THE 4TH DIMENSION IS TIME” I HATE THAT SO#MUCH AAAAGGHHHH AT LEAST RECOGNIZE ITS NOT SPATIAL!!! TIME IS NOT A SPATIAL DIMENSION!!!!!!! IF IT WAS THEN 4D TRAVEL AND TIME TRAVEL WPULD#BE FHE SAME THING AND DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY MUCH COOLER POSSIBILITIES WPULD BE THROWN AWAY IF THAT WAS THAT CASE!!!!! AND. AND. IF THE 4TH#DIMENSION IS TIME. THEN WHATS THE 5TH?? 6TH?? YPU CANT KEEP GOINF ON FOREVER LIKE THAT. YPURE JUST MAKEING MORE 3D WORLSS WITH STUFF IN#ADDITION TO TIME. INTERESTING BUT THAY IS NOT ABOHT HIGHRER DIEMSBSJSNSBAKAJSHDHDHHDHDHDJ#sorry for the rant. jsut. agh i want a spatial 4th dimension. i dont think tesseracts exist through time that would just be an aged cube#anyways yeahhh i love the 4th dimension. new hyperfixation or new special interest? ill have to wait and see. anyways i have done it i have#an oc whos 4 dimensional now and she is the coolest ever i love her#but yeah this book is sosososo good i am literally gonna bring it to school to read instead of draw bc i would lose it if i didn't#10/10 would recommend to anyone who wants to Think

our accounting instructor is wonderful. we bombed both of our tests this week because of our dyscalculia (5.56/10 and 3.33/10), and she could tell we were upset after the test today. she came over to us, and when I explained that I'd done really badly and was frustrated because I know what I'm doing. I understand the material and the practical application perfectly, but the act of punching numbers into the calculator and transcribing on paper or electronically is incredibly difficult and 80% of the time, I have to run the calculations 3+ times to be sure the answer is correct.
my instructor told me that it's clear from my assignments and previous tests that I understood my stuff, and sat down with me with both tests. I still had my scrap paper from both, so I showed her and we compared my answers to the answer key, and long story short? she changed my marks on both tests to 100%! apparently what matters to her is that I understand it, she also has a hell of a time with numbers and gets it. we're going to sit down with my midterm exam and the rest of my tests, once they're written! I almost started crying out of relief. she's an incredible instructor, I really love her. I hope I have her for accounting software in the fall.
#I'm falling in love with accounting to my surprise#I'm actually having a great time with this class. it's not too hard to grasp (for me) and it's like a puzzle#if the admin thing doesn't work out for whatever reason... I might consider becoming a CPA (canada's certified accountant designation)#I never ever thought I would say that. I grew up loathing math and only associating it with humiliation and frustration.#sometimes I think about reaching out to a teacher I had at the adult ed center I graduated from. I wouldn't be here without him.#he taught the math prep course which went over math from elementary to college level#and that's where I learned everything we lost to amnesia in elementary school. I hated math before steve#and now I'm here. coming off of an A+ in office math and potentially looking at the same mark in financial accounting#because he took the time to work with me individually and never gave up on me.#thank you steve.

If I get one more invalidating comment on how learning niche history and science is unnecessary and not what education I should focus on I'm going to scream
#Not directed at anyone here BTW :)#'eugheugheugh you didn't graduate high school study math do your ged' hey how about I enjoy learning topics for fun#How about you be grateful I'm a person who actively seeks out knowledge first before telling me to pivot to do what I'm the worst at#BECAUSE I LITERALLY HAVE A DISABILITY THAT PREVENTS ME FROM LEARNING MATH LIKE A NORMAL PERSON#It's not that I don't want to do it but it's so mentally taxing because I Can't Learn It Like You Do I can't just casually study it#I'd love to but I can't

you ever see a post that's bitching about another post except the author clearly misinterpreted the original post, and like. you Could swan in there with a "wellll acshually" and it's just not worth your time but it's annoying
#for anyone who's nosy this is about the post that's bitching about the post about humans being able to memorize long poems/songs#the OP of the original post did Not mean 'humans lost the physical ability to memorize long-form narratives'#what they meant was 'with the ability to record those narratives in writing memorization is a less common skill for humans to have'#yes your pals in high school memorized the entirety of hamilton. they have the physical ability to do so. nobody's disputing that#the vast majority of skills that were 'lost' over time are actually just unpracticed#there are still people who do mental math. there are people memorizing the odyssey. i still write in cursive day to day#there are people spinning with drop spindles and messing around w phonographs etc etc etc#humans have an immense capacity for learning#that however does not change the fact that some skills are LESS COMMON NOW#which is what that post was about#as an aside. if you grew up with those uncommon skills - good for you. if you didn't but you'd like to have them - learn.#if your memory/ability to think is atrophying from AI or social media just fucking ditch that shit and start doing things yourself#read write watch films do art#it's gonna be slow at first and it's gonna suck ass but it's exercise. brain's a muscle. you're gonna get better at it

I check the OPs blogs when reblogs get shut off on a fairly new post and "math is a vital skillset" OP was really fighting for their life. "I hate to be that guy but this is ableist" I don't think you hate to be that guy at all. I think you can only get off if you're being that guy.
#.txt#'but my dyscalcula but my fourth grade teacher' I cannot stress this enough.#if you are over the age of 21 any schooling you have had to that point you might as well just wipe that space in your memory bank#use it to hold recipes and bloodborne combos because your fourth grade teacher does not and has never ever mattered.#you are an adult and you have to just let go of childish things like being so fucking obsessed with when you learned long division that#you harass a stranger online about it#I have dyscalcula it was never diagnosed I did not even know it was a thing people could have and it made math classes miserable right up#until my very last one. that does not DEVALUE THE DISCIPLINE OF MATHEMATICS.#it has NO BEARING ON IT ACTUALLY#you people are fucking UNREAL self-obsessed

bad habits are sustainable if you accept them and work with them instead of hoping you'll fix them the next time they're prompted (because you probably won't)
#this is about my procrastination obvi#learned to work with my need for a higher stress threshold instead of wasting days doing nothing and feeling guilty#biggest thing i learned about myself thru high school and college is i just gotta do it the shitty way because it works for me#when i commit to it. and i know my limits too. i can't do math related things in a bind but writing about neuroscience? piss easy#so yeah. dont let puritanical hustle culture(??what are these words coming out of my brain) keep you from living ur truth i guess#idle hands do the devils work or whatever. if by the devils work you mean drawing lil guys then yes absolutely thats what i do and im proud

Noooooooo, because why do I want to simultaneously watch Love Next Door, & Spy x Family, rewatch ToQger, rewatch Shinkenger, (required to) watch Mouse and My Lovely Liar, read The Blue Castle, finish Caraval and this other random book, AND read my fanfics I’ve been putting off??? Oh, and finally read my Webtoons and catch up with TBHK…
Is this truly the curse of procrastination, or have I gotten rid of my whatever block I had in the summer?
AND TO WRITE OMG TO WRITE…
#Biggest tragedy ever#Actually I need to learn how to enjoy myself and not take forever on school work#But stilllll ughhhhh#It’s all math’s fault otherwise I literally am set 😍#I am math’s number one hater#If I could talk about how much I hate math you would never hear the end of it#Btw algebra > precal/calculus anyday#I will sleep now smh I should have done more hw today this is disappointing

hello i just wrote a poem and for some reason it feels important
#important to me#idk#it's about things that i've been afraid of#i just have the first stanza so far#on my fear in grade school that i would get pregnant from having feelings for people#legitimately#it was a very deep shame that i felt on the daily and felt so strongly that i needed to hide#i would stand in front of the mirror and check my stomach#scared that any weight i was gaining would mean that i was pregnant#it did not btw#and you know sometimes i think about that#how that was such a big fear and shame for me#how i genuinely. genuinely thought. that i was at risk of getting pregnant#just because i wanted to like. hold hand with some guy at math team practice#i think a lot about how i never actually received a sex education- from school or from my parents#how i grew up hearing the virtues of the virgin mary- not connecting until my mid-teens what virgin really meant#i think about what i had to learn from the internet of all places#and what i still don't know#about how isolated i feel when it comes to romance and sexuality#because i never had an outlet to understand or express potential interests or desires#anyway putting some of that into text just feels like a moment for me i guess#boink#poetry

grown man coworker keeps talking about how homework shouldnt exist and "they have me for 8 hours, and they didnt manage to teach me? they failed" which like. first off you told me you failed math three times cause you couldnt understand negatives. second off, in highschool you have 7 classes. and a lunch. and passing periods. teachers have less than an hour with you. if youre resistant to learning from them in the first place, an hour isnt going to do shit for you. i dont like homework as a concept either but you are not in school anymore and your arguement for it is flawed anyway
#he also said that he thought school was a waste of time. that he could have spent the 13 years in base school learning something useful#sir you learned how to read and do math and history in school. you were not born with these skills.#this has turned into ranting about what this guy says he said that he didnt know what a younger customer got out of being a fan of the show#friends. cause it was made in a time before smartphones and some of the jokes had to go over her head and it was a different world#buddy. buddy. grabbing your shoulders. you can enjoy something without gettting all the jokes you can enjoy something that doesnt personall#relate to you you can enjoy something and Learn About The Things As You Watch#also seperately he dissed on the movie frozen cause he said that let it go had a horrible message telling kids to abandon their family or#whatever it was. he did Not watch the movie (clear from Just His Arguement).#hes generally nice but i never know how to talk to him#i dont talk to people to argue or talk about how stupid or dumb something is as the main topic.#i wasnt in speech and debate i dont have a deep knowlegde of these. dumb topics. i dont have an opinion and i cant contribute and dont want#to debate anyway! when i dont know what to say i dont say anything and that just makes it awkward#ugh. anyway. rant over i have to work with him again today i cant get mad at this before im even interacting with him

As the first math anon (the one with the failed exam), I really do appreciate you writing out a response for me. I will sincerely take your advice and tips to heart.
I hope it helps, anon!! If there's any specific parts giving you trouble (except geometry bestie sorry) I'm happy to try and help break it down!
#ask#anon#i will never forget being in middle school while my dad went back to college for some certificate thingy#and by chance we happened to be at the same level algebra for our math class#and on the same lesson#so i asked him for help with my homework one night and he was like 'yeah i got you we just learned that watch THIS' and showed me how#next day i got it back and i was like **so that was fucking wrong**#my dad says that was the day he knew he'd never be able to help me with my current schoolwork again it was too above his paygrade#did we all have that childhood experience of our dads angrily yelling/repeating a math question at us because we didn't know the answer#but also like 2 years ago my nephew asked me for help with his online math class and ofc it was geometry#i spent like 30 min working out one problem and i was like 'okay i am confident THIS is the answer (:'#and my answer wasn't even one of the 4 multiple choices lmao#listen boy you live in the golden age of the internet where you can just google the solution okay i had WORK for it at your age so#stop asking me about the angle of a cylinder or whatever
