Initial reaction to the end of 2x03:

BUT WAIT THERE'S ACTUALLY SO MUCH DETAIL HERE--

So like I can already hear the fandom howling and screeching in horror, but CAN WE SPARE A MOMENT FOR THE POETIC CINEMA OF IT

Wille's body language with Felice was almost an exact mirror to the bedroom scene with Simon back in S1. It clicked for me the moment the camera focused on him carding his fingers through Felice's hair. We know from S1 (and from the clip of her at the salon in 2x01) that Felice primarily wears her hair straight. I think her getting a curly style in S2 was to deliberately create a stylistic similarity to Simon (on the show's part, not her part). She's close with Wilhelm, she understands him and has sympathy for him in a way that nobody else does, and we know from S1 that she did at one point have feelings for him.

Prior to this episode, Wilhelm has made repeated attempts to initiate physical contact with Simon like they used to, and Simon has declined every time. This is important, as the narrative stresses repeatedly that Wilhelm communicates affection via physical touch. He refrains from touching his mother, is overly touchy with Erik, and then yearns for contact with Simon.

So now here we are in Wille's bedroom, fresh off the heartbreak of seeing Simon kiss Marcus, and Wilhelm feels the walls closing in. He feels trapped, stuck. Just like he did on the football field in S1. Last season, he had the privilege of Simon's attentions, and so it was Simon who "saved" him, held him close, and then ultimately received (and reciprocated) Wille's physical affections. But from Wille's POV, Simon is gone from him! The walls are closing in again, as represented by him standing behind metal bars and staring out at the water, and it isn't Simon who swoops in this time. It's Felice. Wilhelm clearly doesn't feel for her that way, but she is the one who came for him, and so he tries to assuage the pain using nearly identical body language and touching almost exactly how he touched Simon, hoping maybe it can fill the gap.

It very obviously wouldn't have worked, but the sheer attention to detail, right down to Felice getting curly hair to parallel Simon, is very smart cinematography. But also eW OH MY GOD NO

Felice: Please explain to me how a stab wound is ‘natural causes.’

Wille: It’s very natural to die if you’re stabbed.

Wille: It’d be unnatural if he survived.
