So here's the thing, you're free to dislike Yukio. He can just really rub you the wrong way and that's fine. You do not have to like a character to acknowledge they're well written, and sometimes being well written is exactly what's so off putting about them. They're too real or too close to someone or something you dislike.

The reason I'm doing this series is because I've noticed a concerning lack of two things with Yukio.

Basic understanding of the plot that is happening in the story. Some of this is on the anime adaptations because woof, the first two seasons made some major goofs that have stuck with us for better or worse, but mostly worse. It did something horrid to every character, and we are living in the ripple (but more like tsunami) of those missteps. The anime painted Yukio a very specific way and unfortunately a lot of people do not realize it was a biased and typically incorrect way. Those that have gone on to read the manga tend to skim or skip those early chapters as well, so they miss a lot of the things that were different and a lot of the smaller moments that were very important for character development.

A willingness to realize that Yukio is more often than not justified in his actions, even if they negatively impact Rin. Yukio is always expected to behave responsibly and always blamed for everything despite being in the younger half of the exwire group and despite being a fifteen year old teacher, full time student, exorcist, tutor, and on some kind of secret assignment from Mephisto and Shirou for half this manga. He has more responsibility than anyone else ans is expected to never misstep. Rin misunderstands him and belittles him almost constantly and yet even when Rin realizes he has made a mistake about Yukio and his own assumptions, readers do not realize they too have made a mistake. Yukio is far smarter than Rin, so unless we're paying close attention, it can be easy to misread his actions because the reasoning behind them flew over Rin's head.

I truly love this manga and the depths it has. How complicated the story is and how nuanced the characters are. How right and wrong get complicated and how connection and isolation play out. I love that these broken characters are messy and make mistakes and try their best and it's hard to say what was right and wrong in that moment. I love how much it feels like there have been generational curses, but that they can be broken and that the sins of the fathers don't have to carry on past the current generation. That we don't have to do this alone and that we can reach out.

I love how often Rin is wrong or misguided or purposefully not looking and doing something that would help him out because he's either avoiding a confrontation or simply too lazy or was quite frankly a bit stupid. I love that he's quick to throw himself in the way of danger and how that ultimately leads him to struggling to listen and that even in hell, he'll still pull himself back together for those that need him.

I love how Shiemi has so much social anxiety but is so earnest and brave and fights through that to be the person everyone knows they can trust and that she'll square up to any impossible odds to help.

I love that Konekomaru is so scared and has lost so damn much to Satan (not just his parents, his entire temple which would mean a fair amount of extended family and friends that were his birth right to have and known) but will strive to be brave for his friends and is so smart.

I love that Renzou is always a mystery except in the way he is there for his best friends when they really need him. That he always has more cards than he's revealing and the only thing you can trust in is that he'll show up in a way you did not anticipate.

I love that Izumo is such a bitch for so much of this manga, and it's with such a damn good reason. That she will push you away and out until you're in, and then she'll be the biggest ride or die friend you've ever had.

I love that Ryuuji is this big and gruff softie who cries more than most people in the manga and who has such a damn big bleeding heart that his response to having a gun pulled on him is being terrified that his friend is in a really bad place and needs help. (And that he might not have noticed and might have failed, and has to make that right.)

And yes, I love that Yukio is complicated and messy and so damn smart it's hard to keep up with. I love that he's such a contrast to Rin and that the snow boy has built himself such an icy wall around his heart because he was so soft and fragile for so much of his life and will not let himself go back there. How he knows Rin will save him and doesn't think he deserves to be saved and is so scared to let himself be weak.

I truly don't mind if people dislike Yukio. He's a character that contradicts Rin a lot and it's easy to dislike that when you really related to Rin. I really only ask that people dislike Yukio accurately. Blue Exorcist is an incredible story and Yukio Okumura is really well written, and they both deserve that closer look and that time be taken to really understand what it's telling and showing us. So much of the Yukio Hater rhetoric undermines that entirely by taking things out of their context, exaggerating, or misremembering things entirely. It harms Rin as well, and so many of the other characters.

So don't feel guilty if you find yourself enjoying my analysis, it's reasonable that you would if you enjoy Blue Exorcist. Most of what I'm doing is rehashing the story out for you. I'm just taking it slower and point out what is happening specifically with Yukio and some of the background stuff it's easy not to notice. I know this story very well (I have spent far too much time reading and rereading and theorizing) and have picked up on a lot of details that help expand on everything going on because Kato gave us so much detail and some of it you don't notice or pick up on until later. (A lot of Shirou and Yukio stuff makes more sense on a reread because we've gotten a lot more of their backstories now.)

Don't feel guilty if you still want to dislike Yukio, though I would ask that you do a bit of self reflection if your guilt is specifically over disliking Yukio. Why is there guilt there? If it's something with feeling that you'll find your dislike is unjustified, you don't have to justify disliking a character, but it might point out that you were disliking a more fandomized version of Yukio than the real one. It's something that happens to a lot of us.

Hey, what are your thoughts on the recent chapters of Ao No Exorcist?

Hey Anon ! Good ask, sorry I've been rather quiet about AnE lately !

To be quite honest, I never really care for the stereotypical Shonen battle type of arc, but more for its many outcomes. And since Kato-sensei is publishing slowly, I'm aware it could take some time to reach more interesting (to me) chapters.

But since you asked ;) I loved Lucy vs Iblis and it emphasized with yet another example that demons ought not to be considered too different from humans (in that example, because they share the concept of "dreams").

Afterwards, Egyn vs Beel taught us that the bonds between the Baals are more complex than the simple explanation provided by Mephisto a long time ago. It's not...

but rather

Or am I ? :) But actually, since AnE is extremely family-oriented in its themes, I really found it cool to finally see it also applied to the Baals.

I mean, Lucifer and Mephisto can claim grand things like, "it's about siding with or against humanity", but in reality, all Baals' ego awakening meant they all refused to abandon their corporeal reality centuries ago, making them all more human in their reactions, feelings and dynamics.

It's why Iblis treated Egyn like a child, or why Beel was angry that Egyn would choose to hurt her rather than hurt Iblis...

and why Egyn collaborated with the Illuminati, because he felt sorry to witness the other Baals' powers destroying their corporeal vessels:

Mostly, Egyn vs Beel showed that long sibling rivalry can be solved (*winkwink* Rin & Yukio, Shima and his siblings) and also that this whole conflict (like every conflict) comes from different truths..

...bringing us back to Rin's ambivalence towards Satan.

As for the latest chapter, well, it kind of convinces me that the reason I don't really care for this typical battle arc is because I think it's a red herring by Kato-sensei. Or, to be more accurate, that it's definitely not what's really at stake here.

I mean, let's get this straight, Shiemi sacrificing herself and dying ? When we don't even know what's up between her and that creep Jeremiah ? No way.

In fact, Shiemi is likely to be the character with the biggest plot armor after Rin and Yukio and "losing to Amaimon" is definitely making me believe that this battle is not what we should focus on. Rather...

...alternate realities make for a better subject to ponder on. :))

After all, isn't it how this one big battle arc started ? With Satan's unleashed literal hell destabilizing Mephisto's powers ?

Space and time becoming unstable triggered a future that we witnessed, "two years later", with most people being dead, Paku being forced to work as an exorcist and Rin being the Demon King of the faction opposed to the Order.

Supposedly Mephisto fixed it before the battle began, but...

I'd never trust Mephisto "having some fun", like, ever :

Especially not after Beel explaining that this conflict between the True Cross Order and the Illuminati goes both ways,

And specifically not when I still have my doubt about Mephy being the big bad (and not Satan), as far as the Okumura twins are concerned.

In other words, with Amaimon saying that Shiemi beat him in a different reality so "it doesn't count", or Shiemi saying "there is no freedom" in this world, it makes me suspect that we should see further beyond the plain "one side fights another". Especially when, at its core, AnE illustrates that the more power one (person / being / organization) has, the more corrupted everything around them becomes (see the Baals, Satan and their many deteriorating vessels).

So, rather than trusting in Mephisto's fun, I'd rather trust in Rin, who's trying to get a better understanding of what Satan meant :

Because look, I may despise Satan since he's an abusive asshole, self-obsessed being who declared himself a God and who treated Yuri wrongly, but he wasn't necessarily wrong when he called out Mephisto's bullshit.

Truthfully, I think AnE is an excellent and quite unique Shonen series and Kato-sensei generally tends to subvert writing tropes [X][X], which is why I'm waiting for the reveal that this one generic battle unfolding chapters after chapters is not what matters.

Rather this battle being metaphorically won in as many alternate realities as possible is what matters, but it won't happen until powerful entities (like Mephisto, the Uzai family, Satan, Lucifer, Illuminati, the Order, etc), stop treating demons and humans like they're nothing but their pawns. Otherwise it's nothing but doom ahead.

TL;DR let's try to see beyond this Shonen battle, this isn't what Sensei depicts that matters, but addressing the circumstances and the guilty party that led to it, still lurking in the shadows.

Specifically about ch156, I don't think we should care that Shiemi "lost" to Amaimon or fell somewhere, but rather we should think that she won't win anything until she's confronted Jeremiah and the Uzai family who have been upholding a system in which she has no choice to make or freedom to have about her own future.

Somehow I hope my rambling makes sense ? Haha, but as always don't forget I can be absolutely wrong !

Hi! You're the first person that I found that have Number24 as one of their fav anime, so excited! Yes, I love Natsusa, too. See, I never ship anyone poly before (like for me, each character have their own otp) but with Natsusa, I ship him with both Ibuki & Seeichirou (2 ships different flavour).

Also, yes LawLight (my all time fav ship ever). Can I ask, do you ship Mello/Near, too?

For Karma and Kagami, I ship them a bit differently (sorry), Karma/Nagisa and Kagami/Kuro are my otps.

Yes, Dazai/Akutagawa is not common but so interesting. Like, I also ship Dazai with Atsushi.

I ship soukoku & shin soukoku, but other ships are also interesting....

Hi! Thank you so much for your ask. First, please excuse any misspellings or anything, I'm writing this on my phone and, even if I wasn't I low-key suck at typing. Also ran out of tag space so there is that.

Also yes, I love Number24. I love the animation style, I love Natsusa, I love Ibuki and Seiichirou, honestly I love all the characters. But I will say, as much as I love Ibuki x Natsusa (one of my favourite ships) Ibuki and Ethan are basically canonically married in the English dub. Seiichirpu, on the other hand, seems to love Natsusa only. Love both ships. Honestly I probably should've had them both in the same spot on my ship list. But on the day Ibuki was more appealing. I ship both about equally.

I don't really ship Mello/Near but that's more because I don't know them. When u watched Death Note, it was when it was on Netfliz and they took it off before I could finish it, but I do have Crunchyroll now, so I will probably finish it and that answer may change. But, even if I don't like it, I doubt I'd be like 'ew, no.' There's very few ships I'm against. As long as its fiction, we're cool.

As for Karma and Kagami, absolutely. I do like those ships too, they're just not my favourite. But in the case of the Kagami bit I kinda see Kagami/Kuroko/Aomine/possibly Kise as a polycule. (Possibly Kise because I also ship him with Kasamatsu.) But yeah, totally get where you're coming from. I honestly think it depends if you prefer friends to lovers or rivals to lovers and for me I do lean more towards rivals to lovers. Also no need to apologise. Ship whatever you want. We don't have to agree. As long as you're having fun with it, that's what matters. Fandom is supposed to be fun and enjoyable.

Absolutely agree with Dazai being shippable with so many people. Chuuya, kunikida, Sigma, Fyodor I've seen, Atsushi, Aktugawa. I recently saw someone mention Oda/Dazai. He really is just the character you ship with everyone because he can barely go a scene without flirting with someone. I'm sorry, you're dying and are against the clock and you're going to take the time to dance with a stranger you just met? What a power move honestly. Good for him.

Regarding favourite ships, do you mean ones I didn't mention? Or for specific shows? Happy to answer, just without clarification I will probably just repeat what I said before in a slightly different way.

I am (slowly) getting to the arc I think is really important for analyzing Yukio and one I think is vastly under analyzed in general, mainly because the animes skipped it.

Yukio is a brilliantly complex character with so many facets to explore and poke at, and it breaks my heart how much of that is missed by a large portion of the fandom spaces. Fleshing him out more fully also allows you to see more layers in the other characters, and builds up a lot more of the lore of the world because of how deeply involved in it Yukio is, and because he's aware of his involvement in all the complex plots around him.

By flattening him out or discarding him as just a bully or a villain they're flattening so much of the story and twisting other characters as well to make that reading better fit. I don't know if I can do a lot to help steer away from that, but I'm going to try ᕙ( •̀ ᗜ •́ )ᕗ

Hihi!!! The inspiration behind thart sort of look is two fold-- a look reminiscent of guts and to tie it into the spider lily motifs in the outfit!

I tend to like a similar look in his clothes because of both of those things :3 You can see a similar feeling in other looks of his in varying degrees [like below]!

Hey Anon ! Yeah, sure, Kato-sensei writes crush and blossoming romance well !

Obviously, Rin x Shiemi is a given for me right now, but I strongly enjoy the fact that it wasn't always the case and that I used to like Yukio x Shiemi more at first (because that's how the narrative seemed written) ! For more details, please read this post. :)

Anyway, I love the back and forth between them, I love that she's the one who's hesitating because of her own circumstances rather than the more typical Shonen case of "he didn't notice her until the end". You know, because women can have romantic feelings for a guy but other pressing things to also deal with in life.

The fact Izumo-chan knows her secret and tries to encourage her is also a great part of it and I'm glad Shiemi has a girl friend who can help her with this (not just recently, but ever since Rin asked her to go out with him). :D

Meanwhile, Rin is being a pretty respectful guy about it and we stan him for that ! He wasn't pissed about being rejected nor did he insist, he's a good kid. Anyway, they're endgame for sure, I have 0 doubt !

Shiro x Yuri, who loved each other despite death parting them, is also beautiful writing, even more so considering Yuri is written as a survivor of domestic abuse. Maybe there's an alternate reality that Mephisto knows in which they managed to grow old together. :) One can hope.

If it weren't for the current age difference, I'd be a more avid supporter of Yukio x Shura, for reasons presented here. I think they're a pair who makes a lot of sense, narratively speaking, especially since the Aomori arc. But hey, since Shiemi somehow managed to grow 2 years in an alternate reality (see ch144) and with Satan warping time & space, who knows, it may still happen one day !

Otherwise, Yukio losing his composure and shooting the King of Lust creep in the face to help Shura, despite urging Rin to leave her fight alone the whole time, was simply hilarious.

Lastly, I have a big fondness for Juuzou x Mamushi ! Even though, it more or less came out of nowhere during the Impure King arc, it still made a lot of sense. x) Mostly, I love how we got to witness their wedding and how happy they currently are.

Toudou ruined a lot in the series, but I'm happy Mamushi survived his schemes and still had a place to call home. :)

Other than that, I sometimes wonder about Shima x Izumo and Suguro x Izumo, but without any certainty.

For the former, I don't know how serious Shima's crush on her is and Izumo simply isn't too trusting of him. And besides, I think Renzou has a lot of other personal realizations to reach first, about his family and about Myo Dha, so romance will simply have to wait.

For the latter, I enjoy their bickering and they have a few scenes here and there that I think give off shipping vibes, but they do not seem to be a primary romantic focus of Sensei either. So we'll see. :)
